Poliwag resembles a blue, spherical tadpole. It has large eyes, a pink mouth, and a long, mostly transparent tail. It has newly developed legs that still are not used to walking. Poliwag's most famous feature is the black and white swirl on its abdomen, which is actually its innards showing through its semitransparent skin. This skin is also very elastic so that it won't break if the Pokémon is bitten.

====Special abilities====
Along with the standard {{t|Water}}-related abilities, it is capable of making its opponent drowsy with {{m|Hypnosis}}. It is also much more at home in the water, as it can be healed by water using {{a|Water Absorb}}. Its skin is also very {{a|damp}}, making it very slippery and therefore difficult to get hold of. Their Speed stat is above average, allowing them to evade shots of [[Electric (type)|electricity]] quickly.

They are more likely found swimming than on dry land. If they are startled, they immediately run away.

Poliwag can be found in small freshwater ponds and lakes that have an abundance of lily pads, as well as along the banks of tropical rivers.

* Curiously, the swirl on Poliwag's stomach is in the opposite direction to Poliwhirl's and Poliwrath's, but in the same direction of the light green swirl on the stomach of Politoed.
* In its {{v2|FireRed}} Pokédex entry, it is stated Poliwag has black skin. The {{v2|Ruby and Sapphire|s}} Pokédex entry for Poliwhirl states that Poliwhirl's skin is covered in oily fluid - if the same applies to Poliwag, it might be a case similar to the common {{wp|bilberry}}: the berry itself is black but covered in a wax-like coating that makes it look blue.

Poliwag has the appearance of a tadpole. The spiral pattern on its belly is supposed to represent how the intestines of tadpoles are sometimes seen through their transparent skin.

Poliwag appears to be a misspelling of ''{{wp|polliwog}}'', outdated English for tadpole. The ''wag'' may refer to its tail, although it is worth noting that ''polliwog'' literally means head-wiggle. Its Japanese name may come in part from ニョロニョロ ''nyoronyoro'', the sound of slithering, and 子供 ''kodomo'', child.

Gardenia likes to explore [[Eterna Forest]]. Unlike most Gym Leaders, challengers are required to beat all of her students to challenge her.

She appears in front of the [[Old Chateau]], to warn the player of the mysterious stories of hauntings surrounding it. She hints at herself being afraid of ghosts. In this episode, she had a short {{pkmn|battle}} with {{Ash}}, revealing to him that the Eterna City Gym Leader specialized in Grass Pokémon but not that it is her yet. She sent out {{p|Cherubi}} first, though she soon recalled it. She then sent out her own {{TP|Gardenia|Turtwig}}, which defeated both [[Ash's Turtwig]] and {{AP|Staravia|Staraptor}}.

Gardenia has an obsession with Grass Pokémon to the extent that she did not appear to be taking Team Rocket seriously due to her fascination with [[James's Carnivine]] and {{TP|James|Cacnea}}. But she seems to get over this problem in ''[[DP036|A Secret Sphere of Influence!]]'', when she battled the Team Rocket without any hesitation by sending her {{TP|Gardenia|Turtwig}} out. She also reveals her rank as a Gym Leader in this episode.

Gardenia had a Gym Battle with Ash in ''[[DP037|The Grass Menagerie!]]''. She sent out her {{p|Cherubi}}, {{TP|Gardenia|Turtwig}}, and {{p|Roserade}}. [[Ash's Turtwig]] went up against {{p|Cherubi}} first, but it was returned. {{AP|Ash's Staravia|Staraptor}} defeated {{p|Cherubi}}. After {{AP|Staravia|Staraptor}} was defeated by [[Gardenia's Turtwig]], Ash sent his out. It resulted in [[Ash's Turtwig]]'s victory. {{p|Roserade}} beat Ash's Turtwig with its {{m|Weather Ball}}, but later was defeated by [[Dawn's Ambipom|Ash's Aipom]]'s {{m|Swift}} and {{m|Focus Punch}}. The character {{Special|Pearl}} from the [[Pokémon Special]] manga is based on this Pearl. A version of the character also appears in the {{OBP|Pokémon DP|Shigekatsu Ihara}} manga.

This particular rival also appears on the {{TCG ID|Diamond & Pearl|Rival|113}} card in the {{TCG|Diamond & Pearl}} and {{TCG|Secret Wonders}} expansions of the [[Pokémon Trading Card Game]].

Pearl is always in a hurry and extremely impatient, and because of this, often crashes into other people or misses important details. He is incredibly determined and it is very difficult to discourage him; the only thing that has done this so far was his crushing loss to the [[Team Galactic]] [[Commander]], [[Jupiter]] at [[Lake Acuity]], although this defeat lead to a major positive change in Pearl's character, becoming slightly more serious, realistic, and mature. He is also quite the braggart, often boasting about his battling prowess or how cool his Pokémon are. Pearl ''does'' have a soft side however, as seen after the wild Starly attack.

Pearl is also one to take risks and quickly jump into action; it was this behavior that caused the player and himself to be attacked by [[wild]] {{P|Starly}}, setting off the chain reaction that would result in the player receiving his/her first Pokémon.

After becoming the [[Sinnoh]] [[League Champion]], the player can find him training at [[Stark Mountain]] during the week, and at the [[Fight Area]] on weekends in {{v2|Diamond and Pearl|s}}, ready to battle. He can be found at the [[Survival Area]] everyday in {{v2|Platinum}} but he can only be battled on weekends. He desires to get into the [[Battleground]], even asking [[Crasher Wake]]'s help. Unlike the player and {{ga|Lucas}}/{{ga|Dawn}}, Pearl did not receive a Pokédex, due to him rushing out of [[Professor Rowan]]'s lab before Rowan could give him one.

His father is {{FB|Tower Tycoon|Palmer}}, one of the Sinnoh {{si|Battle Frontier}}'s five [[Frontier Brain]]s. Pearl wants to be like him, so he trains hard.

In the Japanese versions, if the {{player}} doesn't give a name for the rival, he will be automatically named パール ''Pearl'' in Diamond. In Pearl, the name ダイヤ ''Dia'' is automatically given. In Platinum, either Dia or Pearl will be randomly selected. The same is the case for other versions of the games, choosing either "Diamond" or "Pearl" based on the game being played. The only reason the Japanese games use ダイヤ rather than the full ダイヤモンド for "Diamond" is because a Trainer's name is restricted to five characters, while elsewhere the restriction is seven.

Mewtwo is one of the first Pokémon created by science. The scientists who created it dreamed of making the strongest Pokémon ever.

Mewtwo is a creature with a humanoid posture, but has many feline features. Mewtwo's body is grayish-purple with a purple underside and a long, purple tail. Mewtwo has three digits on each appendage. It has purple eyes and two short ears.

One of Mewtwo's most notable features is the tube extending from the back of its skull to its spine. It is most likely a secondary spinal cord, or a system of nerves, allowing for an increased amount of blood and sensory transmission to the brain, heightening its psychic powers.

In the [[Pokémon Special]] {{pkmn|manga}}, Mewtwo fights with a highly skilled combination of {{m|Psywave}}s and a giant spoon for long range and close range battles, respectively.

It eventually broke free of the Mansion (destroying it in the process) and fled to [[Cerulean Cave|the Unknown Dungeon]]. There, the {{player}} may capture it after beating the [[Elite Four]]. Cerulean Cave collapses [[Generation II|three years later]], and it leaves the mysterious [[In-battle effect item#Berserk Gene|Berserk Gene]] in a lake near the collapsed Cerulean Cave (implying that the encounter did happen).

Mewtwo has a similar origin and personality to the Mewtwo that appeared in the anime. It is a genetically engineered Pokémon created by [[Blaine]] for [[Team Rocket]] by splicing Mew's DNA with his own. Blaine later defected from Team Rocket and hid himself away, as both he and Mewtwo were suffering from an illness caused by a shared psychic link due to their mutual DNA. Mewtwo went on a rampage and hid itself in the Cerulean Cave, but {{Special|Red}} was able to capture him with a Master Ball and return him to Blaine so he could attempt to find a cure for their illness. Blaine and Mewtwo fought against [[Lance]] but were defeated when their condition weakened them. The pair were later cured by the flames of {{p|Entei}} whom Blaine had earlier befriended. Later, Blaine left Mewtwo on his own, and the legendary Pokémon only returned when he learned of Giovanni's plans to use {{p|Deoxys}} for nefarious purposes. Mewtwo joined up with Red to attempt to defeat Deoxys and Giovanni.

Mewtwo is a playable character and is unlocked after a lot of playing in VS. Mode; either after 700 matches or 20 hours of combined play. The time taken is reduced by the number of human players, so Mewtwo can be unlocked after just five hours if four players are playing for the whole time.

Ironically for its legendary status, Mewtwo is considered to be the poorest character when played at the highest metagame. It is easy to knock off the stage due to its large body and light weight. In addition, Mewtwo is slow, does not have any fast defensive options and also has general problems with some of its other moves. This all leads to Mewtwo's position in the bottom tier.

Mewtwo was cut from the sequel's roster. Internal data features data for seven characters not in the roster; Mewtwo included. It is currently unknown if it will be possible to utilize this data in any way but this does show that Mewtwo was seriously considered for the game as there is the picture for ending classic mode of Mewtwo, and Mewtwo's voice was also found on the disc, but there is a chance that the data for Mewtwo is merely recycled from Melee. Mewtwo does appear as a collectible trophy after clearing All-Star mode on Intense difficulty, however.

* Mewtwo has the second highest {{stat|Special Attack}} in the game, surpassed only by the Attack Forme of {{p|Deoxys}}. This makes it the Pokémon with the highest Special Attack if event Pokémon are not counted.

==Characteristics of legendary Pokémon==
In the {{pkmn|games}}, the {{player}} typically has only one chance to capture a legendary Pokémon, but the same species have appeared in more than one game. Their [[gender]]s are usually unknown, with the exception of {{p|Latios}}, {{p|Latias}}, {{p|Heatran}} and {{p|Cresselia}}. With the exception of {{p|Phione}} and {{p|Manaphy}}, they will refuse to be [[Pokémon breeding|bred]] by {{pkmn|Trainer}}s, and, for similar reasons, they are often banned from competitions. They are [[stats|statistically]] some of the most powerful Pokémon in the game. They never [[Evolution|evolve]], and many are one-third of a [[legendary trio]].

In the {{pkmn|anime}}, legendary Pokémon are generally held in higher regard than they are in the games, nearing a god-like reverence. They appear only to special {{pkmn|Trainer}}s (usually the case of [[Ash Ketchum]]). Very few people have actually seen legendary Pokémon. Because of their rarity, they are sought after by trainers and collectors, especially by [[villainous team]]s like [[Team Rocket]].

It has been predicted (and demonstrated) that the capture of certain legendary Pokémon can lead to great catastrophe, as they often hold a pivotal role in nature. But some speculate that if a trainer were to "play by the rules," the results would not be as chaotic. {{FB|Factory Head|Noland}}, for example, befriended and fought official {{pkmn|battle}}s with an {{p|Articuno}} and its power never exceeded him. It should be noted, however, that Noland is a very skilled trainer.

As seen with {{p|Lugia}}, some breed in the wild; as seen with {{p|Celebi}}, they are neither immortal nor invincible; and only very few (notably {{p|Mewtwo}}) are unique.

There are 35 Pokémon considered to be legendary Pokémon, and there are several more with certain characteristics of legendary Pokémon.

The legendary Pokémon of Generation I can be broken into two groups: the legendary birds and the Mew-based legendary Pokémon.

There are three [[legendary birds]], also referred to as winged mirages. The legendary birds are each based off a mythical bird.

As shown in the [[The Power of One|second movie]], should the three birds be disturbed and turned against each other, they will fight over territory, and, left unabated, their battles will ultimately cause the end of the world. They represent nature's balance and are tied to {{p|Lugia}}. They are strongly linked to the elements {{t|fire}}, {{t|ice}}, and {{t|electric|lightning}}— forces that when combined are believed to yield both the origin of life and the cause of apocalyptic weather disasters. Some fans believe that this scenario applies only to the three birds found near [[Shamouti Island]] in the [[Orange Archipelago]], and that this characteristic does not extend to their species.

In [[Pokémon Snap]], it was shown that the legendary birds could breed, as the player could hatch them from eggs around [[Pokémon Island]] by introducing the eggs to their corresponding element. :I don't imagine so. Remember, Gen I's TM list sucked compared to the rest, and TMs are only passed down to compatible Pokémon when they're a TM in the generation being bred in. Meaning that you can't get a Smoochum with DynamicPunch in Gen III without tutoring it, but you can in Gen II by breeding with a Pokémon that's already learned it.

***The [[STAB]] boosts the Base Power from 250 to 375, Silk Scarf further boosts it to 412.5, and i don't know how that translates into actual battle damage, but 412.5 BP sounds brill to me.
