Ash's main goal in life, as described in [[EP001|the first episode]], is to be the world's greatest [[Pokémon Master]]. Ash began his journey at the age of 10 as a warm-hearted and well-intentioned but stubborn and unskilled [[Pokémon Trainer]]. He was forced to accept the irreverent {{AP|Pikachu}} from [[Professor Oak]] as his [[starter Pokémon]] because he carelessly broke his alarm clock and woke up late on the day he was set to get his first Pokémon. He was determined to achieve his goal; however, and when he showed his willingness to give up his own safety to keep Pikachu safe, he formed a strong bond of friendship with his Pokémon. This would set his course for the future.

However, from that point, Ash still had a lot to learn about becoming a Trainer. He [[captured Pokémon|caught]] his [[Ash's Caterpie|first Pokémon]] by luck, knew nothing about [[Pokémon battle|battling]], and was reluctant to admit it whenever he was wrong. Many of his first [[Gym]] [[badge]]s were given to him merely out of gratitude for his assistance rather than claiming a victory in battle over the [[Gym Leader]]s; of his first five gym battles, only his victory over [[Lt. Surge]] was an actual victory. Every time he thought he was doing well, he would somehow cross paths with his childhood [[rival]], [[Gary Oak]]. He always reminded Ash that he was always a step or seven behind, with Gary catching around forty-five Pokémon by the time Ash had only caught his {{AP|seventh|Kingler}}. This hampered matters further when his {{AP|Charizard}}, his most powerful Pokémon, refused to listen to him due to his inexperience until [[EP105|he had proven himself]] to the powerful Fire-type.

Ash's dedication to his goal paid off over time, and after earning his first eight badges, he competed in the [[Indigo League]]. He advanced further in the rounds than Gary, making it to Round Five while Gary lost his fourth round. After recovering from his defeat, he continued on to improve his skill, take on new challenges, and compete in more [[Pokémon League]] competitions, triumphing in the [[Orange League]] and the {{ho|Battle Frontier}}.

Ash has changed a great deal over the course of the series, particularly in regards to his skill at [[Pokémon training]], but his earnestness and determination have remained. Never straying from his goal, he has remained loyal to [[Ash's friends|his friends]], his family, and his supporters, but most of all his Pokémon. Ash became a great Trainer by learning to find and use the inner strength of each of his Pokémon by bonding with them and learning where their hidden abilities lie, as well as resorting to unorthodox strategies when fighting particularly challenging opponents. For example, he uses his Pikachu's speed to outmaneuver larger foes and attack. In another instance, {{AP|his Charizard|Charizard}} defeated [[Gary's Blastoise]] by causing the field to overheat and have Charizard mount a close-range attack while Blastoise was blinded by the steam. He also prefers to train a Pokémon to be the best it can without making it evolve, as evidenced by his treatment of {{AP|Gligar}} in ''[[DP085|Fighting Fear With Fear!]]''. At first, he was hesitant to let his Pokémon evolve to get stronger, but, as shown in the {{series|Advanced Generation}} and {{series|Diamond & Pearl}}, he has no problem at all in allowing his team members to reach their evolved forms, except for Pikachu.

Early on, Ash originally trained not to further himself but instead to catch more Pokémon than Gary. He later slowed his pace which allowed him to focus on the individual traits of each Pokémon. At the [[Johto]] League [[Silver Conference]], with great humility and maturity, Ash finally won a battle against his old rival, signifying a great milestone in his history. His maturity has also increased in his dealings with Pokémon. This is shown when [[Ash's Primeape|a Mankey]] stole his {{AP|hat}} in ''[[EP025|Primeape Goes Bananas]]'', he screamed and yelled at it, even climbing trees just to get his hat back, but when [[Dawn's Ambipom|an Aipom]] did the same in ''[[AG179|Slaking Kong]]'', he stated merely that he would feel strange without a hat. This would later be contradicted in ''[[DP009|Setting the World on its Buneary]]''; however, when he starts chasing and shouting at Aipom for his hat being stolen in a manner similar to Mankey.

In most episodes of the anime, especially those during the Johto League saga, Ash befriends someone who will influence him and cause him to strive to become a better Trainer. Although he is not a dependent individual, he is still young and has learned to make his way relying on his {{AP|friends}}, particularly the maternal skills of [[Brock]]. The honor of "best friend" is usually reserved for Pikachu but Ash has come to see his closest human friends in the same light over time; using the term for [[Misty]] and [[Brock]] in ''[[EP273|Gotta Catch Ya Later]]'' as well as {{an|May}} and [[Max]] in ''[[AG178|Battling the Enemy Within]]''.

He has traversed much of the [[Pokémon world]] and has thus far participated in four [[Pokémon League#Championship competitions|Pokémon League regional competitions]], but he is still learning new things about Pokémon all the time.

Ash apparently has a close connection with [[Legendary Pokémon]], especially {{p|Ho-Oh}}, {{p|Lugia}}, {{an|Latias}}, {{an|Shaymin}} and {{an|Giratina}}. In the English dub of the [[The Power of One|second movie]], he was revealed to be "The Chosen One" - the one who would bring balance back to the world. Although viewed as a normal human, Ash does have some special abilities as he is said to have the same [[aura]] as [[Sir Aaron]], a legendary hero, and is theoretically able to manipulate it in much the same way. However, he has not received any training in this field, opting to continue his Pokémon journey instead. He has also been likened to an ancient [[aura]] guardian in ''[[DP056|The Keystone Pops!]]'', who also had a partner {{p|Pikachu}}. Later, in ''[[DP071|Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu! Parts 1]]'' and ''[[DP072|2]]'', Ash uses [[aura]] again to locate a lost {{p|Riolu}} and read Riolu's mind as well.

He has a [[Contest Pass]] for the [[Sinnoh]] region, though he has stated that the contest he got it for was the only one he intends on entering. He also has one for the Hoenn region as it was required to watch one of the contests held there. Ash also carries around a broken [[Poké Ball]], of which the other half belongs to Gary and is a symbol of their ongoing, but now friendly, rivalry, as well as [[Misty's special lure]], which she sent to him as a gift, and also half of a ribbon he received in a contest against May before she left the group to compete in Johto.

Ash lived with his mother, [[Delia Ketchum]], until he left for his Pokémon journey at the age of ten.

His father was never introduced. The anime suggests that his father was once a Pokémon Trainer that began his journey in Pallet Town, but it is unclear whether he is still living. There has been much discussion in the fandom as to the identity of Ash's father, though the writers have chosen to not focus on this aspect of Ash's life. Common characters put forward by fans for the role are [[Giovanni]], [[Professor Oak]] and {{an|Silver}}. 

An interview with the series' storyboarder confirmed Ash's father is a Trainer on his own journey. According the same storyboarder, Ash's father may or may not be introduced at the series, depending on its necessity to Ash's further maturity and development as a Trainer.

Ash is an only child, breaking from the tradition of several other main characters, with the exception of {{an|Dawn}} and possibly {{Tracey}}, whose siblings are often a foil or focal point in their lives.

As a Trainer, Ash has captured and befriended a sizable number of Pokémon over the course of the anime's run. His philosophy on {{pkmn|training}} is that Pokémon are individuals and that a combination of trust, friendship and hard work are needed to overcome the toughest of challenges. He seems to battle best with Pokémon that are similar to Pikachu: ones that are speedy and maneuverable, yet able to perform high-powered attacks, but he is willing to work with any Pokémon that comes into his care. Ash tends to battle in a fairly unorthodox manner as well, and his Pokémon often reflect this.

The [[Electric Tale of Pikachu|manga version]] of Ash Ketchum is based on the anime version, but there are many differences between the two. For example, while the anime version of Ash is indifferent to love, romance, or members of the opposite gender (or same gender, some may argue), the manga version of Ash has a huge crush on Gary's sister, [[May Oak]]. Ash's main goal in life, as described in [[EP001|the first episode]], is to be the world's greatest [[Pokémon Master]]. Ash began his journey at the age of 10 as a warm-hearted and well-intentioned but stubborn and unskilled [[Pokémon Trainer]]. He was forced to accept the irreverent {{AP|Pikachu}} from [[Professor Oak]] as his [[starter Pokémon]] because he carelessly broke his alarm clock and woke up late on the day he was set to get his first Pokémon. He was determined to achieve his goal; however, and when he showed his willingness to give up his own safety to keep Pikachu safe, he formed a strong bond of friendship with his Pokémon. This would set his course for the future.

However, from that point, Ash still had a lot to learn about becoming a Trainer. He [[captured Pokémon|caught]] his [[Ash's Caterpie|first Pokémon]] by luck, knew nothing about [[Pokémon battle|battling]], and was reluctant to admit it whenever he was wrong. Many of his first [[Gym]] [[badge]]s were given to him merely out of gratitude for his assistance rather than claiming a victory in battle over the [[Gym Leader]]s; of his first five gym battles, only his victory over [[Lt. Surge]] was an actual victory. Every time he thought he was doing well, he would somehow cross paths with his childhood [[rival]], [[Gary Oak]]. He always reminded Ash that he was always a step or seven behind, with Gary catching around forty-five Pokémon by the time Ash had only caught his {{AP|seventh|Kingler}}. This hampered matters further when his {{AP|Charizard}}, his most powerful Pokémon, refused to listen to him due to his inexperience until [[EP105|he had proven himself]] to the powerful Fire-type.

Ash's dedication to his goal paid off over time, and after earning his first eight badges, he competed in the [[Indigo League]]. He advanced further in the rounds than Gary, making it to Round Five while Gary lost his fourth round. After recovering from his defeat, he continued on to improve his skill, take on new challenges, and compete in more [[Pokémon League]] competitions, triumphing in the [[Orange League]] and the {{ho|Battle Frontier}}.

Ash has changed a great deal over the course of the series, particularly in regards to his skill at [[Pokémon training]], but his earnestness and determination have remained. Never straying from his goal, he has remained loyal to [[Ash's friends|his friends]], his family, and his supporters, but most of all his Pokémon. Ash became a great Trainer by learning to find and use the inner strength of each of his Pokémon by bonding with them and learning where their hidden abilities lie, as well as resorting to unorthodox strategies when fighting particularly challenging opponents. For example, he uses his Pikachu's speed to outmaneuver larger foes and attack. In another instance, {{AP|his Charizard|Charizard}} defeated [[Gary's Blastoise]] by causing the field to overheat and have Charizard mount a close-range attack while Blastoise was blinded by the steam. He also prefers to train a Pokémon to be the best it can without making it evolve, as evidenced by his treatment of {{AP|Gligar}} in ''[[DP085|Fighting Fear With Fear!]]''. At first, he was hesitant to let his Pokémon evolve to get stronger, but, as shown in the {{series|Advanced Generation}} and {{series|Diamond & Pearl}}, he has no problem at all in allowing his team members to reach their evolved forms, except for Pikachu.

Early on, Ash originally trained not to further himself but instead to catch more Pokémon than Gary. He later slowed his pace which allowed him to focus on the individual traits of each Pokémon. At the [[Johto]] League [[Silver Conference]], with great humility and maturity, Ash finally won a battle against his old rival, signifying a great milestone in his history. His maturity has also increased in his dealings with Pokémon. This is shown when [[Ash's Primeape|a Mankey]] stole his {{AP|hat}} in ''[[EP025|Primeape Goes Bananas]]'', he screamed and yelled at it, even climbing trees just to get his hat back, but when [[Dawn's Ambipom|an Aipom]] did the same in ''[[AG179|Slaking Kong]]'', he stated merely that he would feel strange without a hat. This would later be contradicted in ''[[DP009|Setting the World on its Buneary]]''; however, when he starts chasing and shouting at Aipom for his hat being stolen in a manner similar to Mankey.

In most episodes of the anime, especially those during the Johto League saga, Ash befriends someone who will influence him and cause him to strive to become a better Trainer. Although he is not a dependent individual, he is still young and has learned to make his way relying on his {{AP|friends}}, particularly the maternal skills of [[Brock]]. Ash apparently has a close connection with [[Legendary Pokémon]], especially {{p|Ho-Oh}}, {{p|Lugia}}, {{an|Latias}}, {{an|Shaymin}} and {{an|Giratina}}. In the English dub of the [[The Power of One|second movie]], he was revealed to be "The Chosen One" - the one who would bring balance back to the world. Although viewed as a normal human, Ash does have some special abilities as he is said to have the same [[aura]] as [[Sir Aaron]], a legendary hero, and is theoretically able to manipulate it in much the same way. However, he has not received any training in this field, opting to continue his Pokémon journey instead. Ash also carries around a broken [[Poké Ball]], of which the other half belongs to Gary and is a symbol of their ongoing, but now friendly, rivalry, as well as [[Misty's special lure]], which she sent to him as a gift, and also half of a ribbon he received in a contest against May before she left the group to compete in Johto.
 

===Family===
Ash lived with his mother, [[Delia Ketchum]], until he left for his Pokémon journey at the age of ten.

His father was never introduced. The anime suggests that his father was once a Pokémon Trainer that began his journey in Pallet Town, but it is unclear whether he is still living. There has been much discussion in the fandom as to the identity of Ash's father, though the writers have chosen to not focus on this aspect of Ash's life. Common characters put forward by fans for the role are [[Giovanni]], [[Professor Oak]] and {{an|Silver}}. 

An interview with the series' storyboarder confirmed Ash's father is a Trainer on his own journey. According the same storyboarder, Ash's father may or may not be introduced at the series, depending on its necessity to Ash's further maturity and development as a Trainer.

Ash is an only child, breaking from the tradition of several other main characters, with the exception of {{an|Dawn}} and possibly {{Tracey}}, whose siblings are often a foil or focal point in their lives.

As a Trainer, Ash has captured and befriended a sizable number of Pokémon over the course of the anime's run. His philosophy on {{pkmn|training}} is that Pokémon are individuals and that a combination of trust, friendship and hard work are needed to overcome the toughest of challenges. He seems to battle best with Pokémon that are similar to Pikachu: ones that are speedy and maneuverable, yet able to perform high-powered attacks, but he is willing to work with any Pokémon that comes into his care. Ash tends to battle in a fairly unorthodox manner as well, and his Pokémon often reflect this.

I was taken aback by your decision to freeze the site, but remained optimistic about the possibility that you could change your mind. I have even been keeping track of the site's recently modified files feed, and noticed that you have updated it at least once since the freeze took place. If it is not too much to ask, I would like to know why the site cannot remain in its present state, so that you can resume maintaining it if and when you change your mind.

PokeFor does indeed have its many uses, so the question should not be if Bulbapedia would be benefited from taking its content, but rather if it deserves to do so in the first place. Before PokeFor's content can be implemented, Bulbapedia has to undergo many changes, and Bulbagarden itself has to be less geared at the anime and the Pokemon fandom. The People category is a good example, merging the creators of the games with arguably influential figures in the Pokemon community (I consider it a problem that Archaic and Serebii's pages are more detailed than those of Satoshi Tajiri and Junichi Masuda). It will be very easy to simply implement PokeFor's content as it is, but it will not blend with Bulbapedia's less-than-satisfactory quality. If those in charge decide to take up Meowth346's offer, I hope that they will also be fair enough to follow suggestions to revert Bulbapedia to a true Pokémon encyclopedia. Even if he may not admit it, Meowth346 at the very least deserves to know that his hard work has been put to good use. --Unown Lord

He seldom expressed his wishes to turn PokeFor into a wiki, knowing that cooperation would further the already high-end standards of the site. He was enthusiastic towards Bulbapedia at first for this reason, but the project took a much different direction than he had expected. You should not regard Meowth346's kind offer as a token of his approval of Bulbapedia--I assure you this is not the case. I have no place to speak on his behalf, but I will say that this is his way to ensure that the community does not completely deteriorate after he leaves. Do not expect him to hand you all the information without any substantial work, as that will establish very little. By working on the Bulbapedia so that PokeFor's contents blend with the existing information, and to a lesser extent vice-versa, a window of opportunity will be opened. PokeFor's contents can be made even more elaborate, as Meowth346 once wished that a wiki would accomplish, and with some time and much cooperation we may be able to reach a sufficient level so as to be able to extract and analyze data from future games.

::: Myself, I was offended by the inclusion of a large part of the Bulbagarden staff in the People category. I have already described how inappropriate I find the lack of distinction between the game creators and the fans, not all of whom even deserve to be acknowledged as having contributed to the community. Some people are known, or used to be known around the community for various reasons. That is not to say that those people necessarily contributed more than others, but if their contribution can be put in words, it should mean that it is appropriate to list them. If the person is not widely known and is still listed, it creates the impression that Bulbapedia is not as community-driven as it is made out to be, and is simply dedicated to Bulbagarden's needs. In other words, if the inclusion of the person does not serve any purpose behind that of the Bulbagarden Staff profile or the user page, I tend to deem it inappropriate. I see no reason why the community-related pages in the People category cannot simply be moved to a new category: Community People. If a certain page does not even belong to this category (that is, it pertains to the person more than to his contribution to the community), it is a good sign that the content should stay on the user page or in the person's Bulbagarden profile.

::: The community-related pages should always be categorized separately from the canon-related ones. Other than the People category, the [[:Category:Pokémon meta|Pokémon meta]] category includes the pages for the Crossover Pokédex Project and the Deoxys Media Player Project, both of which have nothing to do with the franchise. The [[Fanon]] page uses examples of Shipping, which should stay in their respective category--a simple explanation of the terminology is more than enough. Community-related pages should preferably not be used to represent Bulbapedia by listing them on the Main Page (this is currently not a problem). There should also be no room for allusions to fanon theories on the canon-related pages, such as the one listed at the bottom of [[Eusine|Eusine's]] page. Finally, the priority of the top-level categories on the Main Page disturbs me greatly. It is not listed in alphabetical order, justifiably so, yet the order does appear to be random. First of all, the games should always be listed before the anime and manga. I would gladly open a debate on the subject, but I feel that you already realize that giving priority to the anime hinders Bulbapedia's status as a true Pokémon encyclopedia, and instead renders the entire project a mere part of Bulbagarden, which is undoubtedly anime-focused. The priority between the anime and manga is up to debate, but I tend to agree that the anime should be listed first for being endorsed by Nintendo. The TCG, though endorsed by Nintendo, should come after the manga for holding a separate share of the franchise. Pokémon, moves, characters, world and meta should follow in the end, as they deal with the ideas introduced in the former categories. This order should be followed in pages relating to the games, anime, manga and TCG (even organized pages, such as [[Lance|this one]], give priority to the anime-related contents by listing the Japanese voice actor in the character's introduction and listing the anime category first). --Unown Lord

OK, I know a lot of people are totally desperate to edit their user pages (myself included) and I also read thenotice about edits every five minutes annihilating the server then I had an idea that might make everyone happy. Would it be possible that the admnins dish out a certain date to a user starting from whenever, sort of like an appointment. Example:

*TTEchinda: 12th July
*Archaic: 13th July
*Wikid: 14th July

On this day that user could then be given the oppourtunity to edit their userpage by enabling the user to edit their page but only on that day. This way the server won't destroy itself and everyone can have their own personally edited pages. If they want to change it they could ask an admin for an "appointment" and so the admins don't get bombarded with requests about userpage edits you could have a one edit per month or whatever rule. I have noticed that over the course of the year, Bulbapedia has been slowing down exponentially, and have thought I might lend a thought. Bulbapedia has gotten very Server-Intensive, running many server-side scripts. Many of these processes could be converted from server-side PHP to client-side JavaScript. PHP slows down the serving time of web pages because it's an extra process the server has to run, but since JavaScript is a Client-Side script, the computer recieving the web page does the work for it. This eases the load on the Server, and doesn't take much time to do on the client computer. Please, consider this option and reply. I already contacted TTEchidna, and he pointed me to you. As the head of the Pokémon Preservation Council, he asked Ash to deliver an {{pkmn|egg}} that had been poached from Mt. Silver to him. This hatched into a {{AP|Larvitar}}, which Professor Elm then asked Ash to deliver to its home.

No, they're actually not taken to be the romanized forms of the actual katakana. Otherwise we'd have Pikachūu for
ピカチュウ or Mayurudo for マユルド. These aren't the official Japanese names, though; stuff like "Pikachu" and "Mayuld" appear on internal GameFreak stuff as well as on Japanese packaging that uses rōmaji.

We use the "regular" romanizations until we've gotten into the copyright databases to find the actual names they applied for. Dusknoir now has fully developed arms. Two yellow bands are near its black wrists and its grey hands are similar to Dusclops'. Dusknoir has a gray, cylinder-shaped head with another yellow band near the top and a single black glaring eye with a yellow iris and a red pupil. Dusknoir has a gray neck collar divided into six flaps; three growing out of each side of it's neck. The collar ends in a v-neck at the front. Dusknoir has a ghostly tail instead of feet like Dusclops, resembling the typical depiction of a genie. Dusknoir has a yellow antenna on top of its head in which allows this Pokémon to receive transmissions from the spirit world which tell it to bring people there. In addition, it may have ties to the Grim Reaper, as the player needs a [[Reaper Cloth]] in order for it to evolve.

A '''Pokémon Egg''' (Japanese: '''タマゴ''', ''tamago'', meaning "egg") is an object which every [[Pokémon]] hatches from. An Egg's shell usually has a pattern reflecting the appearance of the Pokémon inside. Pokémon Eggs are produced through [[Pokémon breeding|breeding]]. According to a girl in [[Solaceon Town]], no one has ever seen a Pokémon lay an Egg, and so it is not actually confirmed that they lay the Eggs. No alternate explanation for their creation is offered, however.

Some Pokémon, called [[baby Pokémon]], can only be obtained in most games by hatching them from an Egg. All [[legendary Pokémon]] except for {{p|Manaphy}} and {{p|Phione}} cannot breed in the [[Pokémon games]] and therefore their eggs are only seen in rare situations if at all; however, from [[Pokémon Snap]] and other situations, it is known that these Pokémon can somehow produce eggs and, subsequently, young offspring. Eggs will always hatch into a base [[Evolution|evolutionary]] stage, or in cases such as {{p|Marill}} and {{p|Wobbuffet}} without the proper [[Held_items#Breeding_items|incense]], the stage immediately following a baby stage. Most Generation IV Eggs appear as a cream-colored egg with green spots. This is a new sprite based off the same Egg design used in Generation III. It resembles a {{wp|Yoshi}} egg.

{{p|Manaphy}}, however, hatches from a unique clear blue Egg with a red center and a ring of yellow spots. This Egg can be obtained through a special mission in {{ga|Pokémon Ranger}} or its [[Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia|sequel]] and can be transferred using two DS systems to [[Pokémon Diamond and Pearl]] where it will hatch into the [[legendary Pokémon]].

The first egg ever seen was {{p|Togepi}}'s, which briefly predated [[Pokémon Snap]] and thus could be considered the first Pokémon egg ever seen in the main [[canon]]. This egg was kept safe and warm by [[Brock]]; in later episodes, eggs are carried in [[egg case|individual containers]] designed to protect and incubate. These containers also come with a Poké Ball to keep the Pokémon in once it hatches. People are also seen polishing the shells of eggs they take care of.

An egg that is going to hatch soon flashes until it hatches (with the exception of {{TP|Misty|Togepi}}'s egg). When it hatches, it glows bright white and seemingly transforms into the Pokémon that was inside of it. Because of the way they hatch in the anime, several fans say that eggs "evolve" into Pokémon, instead of actually hatching from them.

*No Pokémon that was hatched from an egg in the anime has evolved twice, either because their evolutionary line prohibits it ({{TP|Ash|Phanpy}} and {{TP|May|Eevee}}), their evolutionary line went no further than one evolution at the time of their release ({{TP|Misty|Togepi}}), or simply because, as of this point, the Pokémon who ''can'' go on to evolve twice have not even undergone one evolutionary event yet ({{TP|Ash|Larvitar}}, {{TP|Misty|Azurill}}, {{TP|Brock|Happiny}}).
