They are different from the previous generation's competitions in that not only do they have more rounds, but rounds from the earlier games have been altered. They come in four rankings in the same five categories as the [[Contests]]: [[Cool Contest|Cool]], [[Beauty Contest|Beauty]], [[Cute Contest|Cute]], [[Smart Contest|Smart]] and [[Tough Contest|Tough]]. There are three rounds, each one uses different skill for the Pokémon and their partner. The first round is the Visual Competition, where Pokémon are dressed up and judged on their [[condition]] in the appropriate category. These stats can be raised using [[Poffin]]s, rather than the [[Pokéblock]]s of the previous generation. The second round is the Dance Competition, in which all four participating Pokémon must dance to earn points. The last and the most important round is the Acting Competition. The Hearthome Gym is a giant, five-story building constructed of gray stone blocks. It is illuminated by eerie gray-blue torches. On every floor, there is a mathematical puzzle and three doors corresponding with the answers. Picking the correct door leads to the next elevator up. Picking the wrong door leads to a dead end and a trainer to fight. The Gym Leader waits in the final room on the fifth floor, which has stain-glass windows and resembles a cathedral. In {{game|Platinum}}, Hearthome Gym has become much like [[Dewford Gym]], in [[Hoenn]]; it is dark and there is only limited light source.
