Joey (Japanese: ゴロウ Gorō) is a Youngster and one of the few regular Trainers who appeared in other canons than the games themselves. In Chuang Yi's translations of the Pokémon Adventures manga, he is known as Grant; however, VIZ Media's translations, consistently with the games, refer to him as Joey.

In the games
In the Generation II games, other than the Silver, Joey is the first Trainer the player battles in the game.

He is first seen battling with another Youngster, Mikey, and blocking the route. After the player delivers the List of key items in Generation II to Professor Elm, Joey is done with battling after his apparent loss to Mikey. He is now ready to challenge the player with his Rattata. After the battle, he gives out his Pokégear number and hence can be rematched.

Joey makes great emphasis of the fact that he only raises one Pokémon, his Rattata (Raticate from the third rematch and onwards), claiming that it is in the "top percentage of Rattata".
In the Pokémon Adventures manga
Joey is Professor Elm's assistant and his errand boy. His partner Pokémon is Rattata.

He is first seen in Gold's garden, on the way to Elm's lab to deliver several Pokémon to the professor for examination. However, his backpack was stolen by a wild Murkrow along with Gold's radio antenna, causing Gold's radio to lose broadcast. After noticing that something is wrong with radio, Gold spots Joey in the garden and mistakes him for the thief. The Youngster explains that the real thief is Murkrow. Gold decides to retrieve stolen objects. He succeeds, catches the Murkrow and the boys become friends.

After the incident with Murkrow, Gold and Joey travel together for a while. After a trip in New Bark Town, Gold notices Pokémon from his backpack have been stolen and they go to the laboratory to tell Professor Elm about it. Unluckily, they come to the lab just after Silver stole the Totodile. After that, Joey uses his computer to montage a picture of Silver for the police. Then, they meet Professor Oak who is interested by the fact that Silver had a Pokédex. It turns out that the Oak was the one who ordered him to deliver the Pokémon to Elm. Gold wants to get a Pokédex from Oak, but the professor refuses.

After that, Gold decides to train when a thunderstorm started to rage. Joey's Rattata falls into the river, and Gold goes to rescue it. After Joey tells this to Professor Oak, the professor decides to give Gold the Pokédex. After that, Joey decides to return to New Bark Town to pay Professor Elm a visit, while Gold decides to search for Silver. The boys go separate ways.

Joey is later seen as a cameo helping Professor Elm.

In Chuang Yi's translations of the manga, he was known as Grant. However, VIZ Media's translations properly identify him as Joey.

In the Golden Boys manga
Joey is first seen in the very first chapter of the manga. He is battling Gold's Totodile with his Rattata. After the battle, Gold tells Joey how he got his Totodile in a flashback scene. Then, the boys spot an injuried Pidgey lying amidst the grass of 28. After Gold helps the Pidgey recover using a Berry, Joey starts to appreciate Gold's kind heart. After that, the boys go separate ways.

Joey is seen again on the Summit in Ecruteak City. His Rattata has apparently evolved into a Raticate.

|}

Trivia
* A Trainer that appears on the pathway to Bill's Cottage has the same English name. He also has a Rattata, as well as a Spearow. However, the Japanese name is different.
* On the Pokégear, even after his Rattata has evolved into Raticate, Joey brags about his Rattata, not Raticate.
** This is, however, a common trait that applies to all such Trainers (in games with Pokégear) that can be rematched and have Pokémon that evolve between rematches.
* The source code indicates that Joey's Rattata has maximum IVs, backing up his claim that it is in "the top percentage of Rattata."
When Pokémon Worlds Collide! (Japanese: ライバルバトル！三対三!! Rival Battle! Three vs. Three!!) is the third episode of Diamond & Pearl. It is scheduled to air Japan on September 28, 2006<!-- and in the USA on ??? -->.

Ash searches for Pikachu, whom he has been separated from. While searching for his Pikachu, he is challenged to a Pokémon battle by Paul.
spoilers
Synopsis
Ash and Brock run through the forest looking for Pikachu, following Ash's Starly. Dawn is also in another part of the forest following Piplup and Pikachu. Ash and Brock stop as they hear a noise up ahead. They are shocked when a Thunderbolt rips through the forest. Down in that area, a young boy trainer throws a Poké Ball and captures a Starly. Ash approaches him, hoping to see Pikachu but it is the kid's Elekid. Brock is impressed by Elekid's Thunderbolt and congratulates the kid, Paul, on his new Starly. But Paul tosses some Poké Balls and releases three Starly. After scanning them in his Pokédex, he tosses their Poké Balls into the sky, releasing two of them. He reveals he only keeps the strongest Pokémon for himself. Ash is angry at this, saying Pokémon require care to grow strong. Paul turns to walk away but stops when a Thunderbolt launches behind them.

Team Rocket have an huge, multi-armed Elekid-shaped machine. They advance on Dawn, demanding Pikachu. Piplup is no match for the machine and is knocked out. The robot's hands reach down and are about to grab Piplup when Ash's Aipom bursts through the trees and attacks with Swift. Pikachu and Dawn are shocked to see Ash. Ash realizes Team Rocket are in the machine. They step out onto a platform in front of it and say their motto. Ash climbs a tree and jumps onto the machine's arm, climbing up to Pikachu. Dawn is stunned at the lengths he will go to for Pikachu. Ash tries to force the hand open and the machine begins to malfunction. It explodes as Team Rocket go blasting off.

Emerging from the rubble, Ash, Pikachu, Aipom and Starly reconcile. Ash greets himself to Dawn and scans her Piplup with his Pokédex. Exhausted, Piplup collapses. Brock takes it in his arms, gives it some Potion and it feels better instantly. At the Pokémon Center, the gang make a call to Professor Rowan. He reveals that he has a parcel at the lab from Ash's mom. In the forest, Paul and his Elekid examine Team Rocket's broken robot. Ash is tougher than he thought...

Walking down a road together, Ash, Dawn and Brock are approached by Officer Jenny who is glad Ash found his Pikachu. At the lab, Ash opens his parcel, surprised to find new clothes, hat, trainers and backpack. After putting it on, he calls his mom, telling her he is OK. He also calls Professor Oak, who chats with Rowan. In the living room, Dawn asks Ash if she could come along with them. Ash agrees, they return their Pokémon and leave the lab. But waiting outside for them is Paul. He tells Ash that they will battle.

As the two face off, Brock referees, saying it will be a 3-on-3 Pokémon battle. Both trainers release their Starly. Paul's Starly uses Quick Attack. Ash tries to counter with a Wing Attack, but Paul's Starly uses Double Team and Aerial Ace combined and Ash's Starly is knocked out. Ash recalls Starly, as does Paul.

Ash throws a Poké Ball and his Aipom emerges. Paul throws out his Chimchar, which Ash scans with his Pokédex. Aipom launches a Swift attack, but Chimchar counter with Ember, and the two attacks explode on contact. Aipom prepares to use Focus Punch, but Chimchar uses Flame Wheel, stopping the attack, as Rowan explains. Aipom uses Double Team, but an Ember destroys all the clones, and the real Aipom is slashed by Chimchar's claws. Ash orders another Focus Punch, as Paul prepares to intercept it, but Aipom jumps into the air, dodging the Flame Wheel. Aipom smashes down into Chimchar, knocking the fire monkey out. The trainers recall their Pokémon.

The trainers send out the electric Pokémon, Pikachu and Elekid. Pikachu uses Thunderbolt, but the attack is merely absorbed by Elekid. Elekid revolves its arms and launches an electric attack at Pikachu, who also shakes it off without too much damage.

Trivia
*Meowth says that They have been chasing pokemon since Dawn's been alive. Since The show has been on for 10 years and Dawn is supposedly 10 years old, this is technically correct (although the flow of time in show is disputed).
* This originally aired as a two hour special on September 28, 2006, together with DP001 and DP002.
* Paul's Pokédex is dark blue.
* Music from Jirachi: Wish Maker and Lucario and the Mystery of Mew are used as background music.
* The half time shots featured Ash (in his Advanced Generation clothes), Dawn and Brock.
* The ending credits consisted of DP001, DP002 and DP003.
* There was no Professor Oak's lecture for this episode.
* Team Rocket Mecha: Super Sinnoh Slinger Mark 1A. It can withstand and deflect any attack, is solar powered and makes lunch.
Max (Japanese: マサト Masato) is a young boy from the anime, and one of the travelling companions of Ash. He is the only main character thus far who was not a Pokémon trainer and he did not own any Pokémon during the entire Advanced Generation series. He is the younger brother of May, and the son of Norman, the Petalburg Gym Leader, and Caroline. His Japanese voice actor is 山田ふしぎ Fushigi Yamada, his English voice actresses are Amy Birnbaum (AG003-AG145 ) and Jamie Peacock (AG146-present). His Brazilian voice actor is Thiago Keplemaier.

Max is somewhat of a know-it-all, relying mostly on book smarts than actual experience. He seems to have come under Brock's tutelage for real-world knowledge. Max also took Misty's bit for yanking Brock by the ear whenever Brock sees a pretty woman. Max also frequently shows tension between he and his older sister May, such as telling embarassing stories about her to others or arguing with her about the way she does certain things.

Max is unique of the main characters in that he actually knew of Ash before he met up with him. Max watched the Silver Conference live and then continually watched the videos he made of it. When he stopped to find out who was making noise, he was surprised to see one of the competitors standing in the Gym. However, the two did not get off to a good start as Max continued to put Ash down, assuming that he could have defeated Harrison. After seeing Ash battle Norman, however, Max became impressed with Ash and soon decided to travel with him and May. Max's admiration of Ash has been seen on numerous occasions since then, though he admires his father even more.

The question of Max's starter Pokémon was raised a number of times while he was travelling in Hoenn. Between the Hoenn starters, it appears that he would have chosen Treecko as that is what he told May she should have chosen. However, in Having a Wailord of a Time he speculates that he could receive anything. Not knowing who it will be leads to some of the conflict and resolution with his doppelganger in Maxxed Out. At the end of that episode he stated that Max is lucky as he already knows who the Pokémon he will start his training with will be. Max finally did meet his future partner in Do I Hear a Ralts? when he befriended a weakened Ralts. Wanting to show his responsibility he took care of it and brought it to a Pokémon Center with a little help from Ash's Snorunt. When the two parted ways at the end of the episode, they promised to meet up again when Max was eligible to be a trainer.

However, while Max does not own any Pokémon he has befriended a variety of different species during his travels: Poochyena, Jirachi, Deoxys, a Shuppet in the episode Take This House and Shuppet. He simply played with the Shuppet, after fleeing from the team when he became angered with May. Max has also occasionally borrowed May's Munchlax, such as in Off the Unbeaten Path! when he needed a Pokémon to take part in an Orienteering contest.

Despite this, Max has been in a couple of Pokémon battles. In Gonna Rule the School, Max spent a day at Roxanne's Trainers School where he battled with a Poliwag against a Magby. He used strategy in increasing Poliwag's defense as much as possible with Defense Curl but this backfired when Magby managed to get enough hits in during this time to knock Poliwag out. In the episode Candid Camerupt!, Max borrowed Ash's Corphish for a battle against Vivi Winstrate. He also briefly commanded Ralts to send Team Rocket blasting off in the episode mentioned above.

Max is similar to Ritchie in his lack of popularity in the fandom. This has been stated on many occasions to be to do his lack of Pokémon, giving him little purpose compared to other main characters. However, certain episodes such as Do I Hear a Ralts? and Home is Where the Start Is have redeemed him in some fans' eyes.

At the end of Advanced Generation, May announced that she wished to travel to Johto alone. This initially upset Max but Ash cheered him up with the promise of a battle between the two when Max becomes a trainer. He is currently staying at home in Petalburg City and has so far not been seen since Ash began his journey in Sinnoh.

Befriended Pokémon
* Deoxys (Pokémon Ranger - Deoxys Crisis)

Trivia
*His appearance is based upon the School Kid trainer class.
*His Japanese name, Masato can be taken to be 正人, which literally means correct/elegant man, possibly referring to the fact that he is usually always right.
*Max was the first of Ash's friends to have a lead role in a Pokémon movie, as all movies before Jirachi: Wish Maker had either Ash or a character of the day with the lead role.

A Pokémon storage system allows Pokémon to be stored and transmitted as computer data. The first such system was originally developed by Bill. There have been at least five versions of the storage system seen in various games:
*Bill's storage system (as seen in Generation I): a relatively crude, text-based interface that had twelve boxes which could store 20 Pokémon each, for a total of 240 Pokémon.
*Bill's storage system (upgraded) (as seen in Generation II): adds the ability to rename boxes, as well as two additional 20-Pokémon boxes, for a total of 280.
*Lanette's storage system (as seen in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire): an entirely new storage system, with a graphical user interface and the capacity to store up to 420 Pokémon.
*Bridgette's storage system (as seen in Pokémon Box): based on Lanette's storage system, but with greatly expanded capacity and an improved interface; it can hold up to 1500 Pokémon, and allows the user to move many Pokémon at once.
*Lanette's storage system (upgraded by Bill) (as seen in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen and Pokémon Emerald): adds the ability to manage held items directly from the PC and can move mass amounts of Pokémon at once like Bridgette's system.
*Sinnou Storage System (seen in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. The same as the Lanette's systemm, but the number of boxes has been increased from 14 to 18.

Legendary Pokémon are a group of extremely rare and powerful Pokémon. In the Japanese version, there are three distinct terms used to refer to those Pokémon which are collectively called legendary in English. One, 伝説のポケモン (densetsu no Pokémon, lit. Pokémon of legend), refers to those which are featured prominently in legends, such as Groudon and Kyogre. The second, 幻のポケモン (maboroshi no Pokémon, lit. Pokémon of illusions), refers to those so rarely seen that some question their very existence, such as Mew and Lugia; an alternative definition restricts it only to Pokémon not available in normal gameplay. The third is 神話のポケモン (shinwa no Pokémon, lit. Pokémon of myth), which is a term applied to some of the legendary Pokémon of Sinnoh.

In the games, the player typically has only one chance to capture a legendary Pokémon. They are genderless, with the exception of Latios, Latias, Heatran and Cresselia. With the exception of Phione and Manaphy, they cannot breed, and, for similar reasons, they are often banned from competitions. They are statistically some of the most powerful Pokémon in the game. They never evolve, and many are one third of a legendary trio.

In the anime, legendary Pokémon are held in generally higher regard than they are in the games. They appear only to special trainers (usually the case of Ash Ketchum), and their capture can lead to the destruction of the world. As seen with Lugia, some can breed; as seen with Celebi, they are neither immortal nor invincible; and they are often not unique.

Very few people have actually seen legendary Pokémon. Because of their rarity, they are sought after by trainers and collectors, especially Team Rocket.

List of legendary Pokémon
There are 35 Pokémon considered to be legendary Pokémon, and there are several more with certain characteristics of Legendary Pokémon.
Generation I
The legendary Pokémon of Generation I can be broken into two groups: the Legendary Birds and the Mew-based legendary Pokémon.
Legendary birds
There are three Legendary Birds, also referred to as winged mirages. As shown in the second movie, should the three birds come in contact with one another, they will fight over territory, and, left unabated, their battles will ultimately cause the end of the world. They represent nature's balance and are tied to Lugia. One of each was seen in the Orange Islands. In Pokémon Snap, it was shown that the Legendary Birds could breed, as the player could hatch them from eggs around Pokémon Island by introducing the eggs to their corresponding element.
* Articuno is the Legendary Bird of Ice. It can be found on Seafoam Island in the Generation I games and their Generation III remakes. In addition to the one in the Orange Islands, a second one was seen in the Johto region in the episode Freeze Frame. A third one was seen in the Kanto region, with Noland in Numero Uno Articuno and The Symbol Life.
* Zapdos is the Legendary Bird of Thunder. It can be found at the Power Plant in the Generation I games and their Generation III remakes. In addition to the one in the Orange Islands, a second one was seen in the Johto region in the episode As Clear As Crystal.
* Moltres is the Legendary Bird of Fire. It can be found on Victory Road in the Generation I games, and in the Sevii Islands in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. The spirit of Moltres represents the Indigo League and its flame came alive in the episode All Fired Up. It also appeared to Ritchie at Sevii Islands in anime.

Mew and Mewtwo
* Mew is the Psychic feline Pokémon of ancient legend. It is not obtainable by normal means in any game; however, a glitch allows the player to battle and capture Mew in Generation I. In Emerald Version, a Nintendo event gave out the Old Sea Map that would take the player to Faraway Island, where Mew could be caught. It is said to be able to live forever. The DNA of all Pokémon can be traced back to Mew, and thus it represents the origin of life. The bubbly Mew was first seen in the first movie, and later in the special Mewtwo Returns. Another is seen in the eighth movie.
* Mewtwo is a genetically altered clone of Mew. It can be found in the Cerulean Cave in the Generation I games and their remakes. It was statistically the most powerful Pokémon until Generation II. It is also one of the most intelligent, and can communicate freely with humans using telepathy. It is the main character of the first movie, and the Mewtwo Returns and The Birth of Mewtwo specials. After the events of Mewtwo Returns, it is portrayed as taking the cover of night and living amongst humans in big cities.

Generation II
Generation II featured the advent of three new groups of legendary Pokémon, consisting of a total of six.
Legendary beasts
The Legendary Beasts have variously been referred to as Legendary Dogs or Cats, but Beasts is the accepted neutral title. These speedy, powerful creatures were created by Ho-oh after the burning of Brass Tower. Because they are unable to restrain their extreme power, they race headlong around the land. They can be found racing around the Johto region in the Generation II games. One can also be found roaming Kanto, after the player gets the National Dex, in Pokémon FireRed and in Pokémon LeafGreen, depending on the Starter Pokémon the user chooses at the beginning of the game. In Pokémon Colosseum, it is possible to snag all three legendary beasts.
* Suicune is the embodiment of the North Wind. It is the Pokémon sought by Eusine in Pokémon Crystal, and is released upon the completion of the Burned Tower storyline in the Generation II games. It appears in Kanto in FireRed and LeafGreen if the player started off with Charmander. Ash encountered one at the beginning of the Johto story arc, in Don't Touch That 'Dile, again in For Ho-oh the Bells Toll, and made a brief appearance in the fourth movie. It is closely tied with Ho-oh, and also the Unown.
* Entei is the embodiment of volcanoes. According to legend, one is born every time a new volcano appears. It appears in Kanto in FireRed and LeafGreen if the player started off with Bulbasaur. An Entei was seen in the Johto region, in the episode Entei at Your Own Risk. A telepathic Entei was featured in the third movie, but it was only a manifestation of Molly Hale's imagination, created by the Unown. An Entei is formed from a statue in Fiore when you reach the Jungle Relic.
* Raikou is the embodiment of thunder. It appears in Kanto in FireRed and LeafGreen if the player started off with Squirtle. Raikou was twice seen in the Johto region. It was briefly seen in the episode Houndoom's Special Delivery, and also in the The Legend of Thunder! special.

Lugia and Ho-Oh
These two additional birds of legend are thought to be closely related, although they are also polar opposites. Ho-Oh is based on the Chinese phoenix, or Fènghuáng and Lugia on the Japanese sea-kami Ryūjin.
* Ho-Oh is the Guardian of the Skies. This Pokémon is represented by rainbows, the sun, and the color gold. It is said to glow in seven colors and see into the future. It resides at the top of the Tin Tower in the Generation II games. In Pokémon FireRed, LeafGreen, and Emerald, Ho-Oh is found atop Navel Rock. Ho-Oh is often seen at the beginning of a new journey, which happened to Ash twice. The spirit of Ho-Oh represents the Johto League. Ho-Oh is the guardian of the Legendary Beasts, and it is especially close to Suicune.
* Lugia is the Guardian of the Sea. It is represented by sleep, the moon, and the color silver. Lugia can be found in Whirl Islands in the Generation II games. In Pokémon FireRed, LeafGreen, and Emerald, Lugia is found beneath Navel Rock. A Shadow Lugia resides in the Orre region in Pokémon XD. Lugia protects the balance of nature, and is the only creature that can pacify the battling Legendary Birds. One was seen in the second movie. Two more, a mother and a child, were seen near Silver Rock Isle at the beginning of the Whirl Cup arc of the anime. Lugia is the guardian of the Legendary Birds.

Celebi
Although it has no relation to Mew, Celebi was dubbed the "New Mew" because of its similar size, shape, stats, and National Dex number. Because of this, it is commonly listed with Mew (and later Jirachi, Phione, and Manaphy) in lists of legendary Pokémon.
* Celebi is a Pokémon that can travel through time. It is the star of the fourth movie and was obtainable in the Japanese version of Pokémon Crystal via the now-discontinued Mobile System GB service. On the Japanese Bonus Disk for Pokémon Colosseum, Celebi was a direct download to Generation III cartriges. During Pokémon 10th Aniversary: Journey Across America, Celebi was downloadable on US Generation III cartridges. Celebi, when obtainable, is found at the Forest Shrine in Ilex Forest by bringing the GS Ball to the shrine.

Generation III
The Generation III games feature a total of 10 new Legendaries.
Legendary Regis
The legendary Golem-like Regis were featured in the eighth movie as the protectors of the Tree of World's Beginning, but the true story of their history remains a mystery. They have a strong connection to the fourth Regi and their keeper, Regigigas.
* Regirock is found in the Desert Ruins in the Generation III games when the required puzzle is solved.
* Regice is found in the Island Cave in the Generation III games after solving a puzzle.
* Registeel is found in the Ancient Tomb in the Generation III games, and, like the other two Regis, a puzzle must be solved before it can be reached.

Eon Pokémon
Latios and Latias (sometimes referred to, collectively, as Lati@s) are twin Dragons (one male, one female) featured in the fifth movie. Both can take the shape of humans. According to legend, they guard the water city of Alto Mare, and are revered as gods. They have a strong connection with the Soul Dew.
* Latias is found in the wild after defeating the Elite Four in Pokémon Sapphire. It changes routes whenever the player does, and is considered as rare as the Legendary Beasts in Generation II. It can also be obtained in Pokémon Ruby by using the Eon Ticket obtained from Nintendo Power. In Pokémon Emerald, when his/her mom asks about a TV program after the Elite Four, it appears as in Sapphire if the player chooses Red, and as in Ruby if the player chooses Blue.
* Latios is found in the wild after defeating the Elite Four in Pokémon Ruby. It is considered as rare as the Legendary Beasts in Generation II due to the similar route-changing activities that it shares with them and Latias. It can also be obtained in Pokémon Sapphire by using the Eon Ticket obtained from Nintendo Power. In Pokémon Emerald, when his/her mom asks about a TV program after the Elite Four, it appears as in Ruby if the player chooses Blue, and as in Sapphire if the player chooses Red.

Super-ancient Pokémon
The weather-related legendary Pokémon represent the balance of nature and play a major role in the storyline of the Hoenn-based Generation III games. It is said that, at the beginning of time, Groudon raised lands and expanded continents as Kyogre expanded the seas. These Pokémon took to sleep after a cataclysmic battle, soothed by Rayquaza.

They are based on the behemoth, leviathan, and ziz of Hebrew legend.
* Kyogre is the beast who has the power to expand the sea by bringing forth constant rain. It is found in the Cave of Origin in Pokémon Sapphire, and Marine Cave in Emerald. It is the object of Team Aqua's reverence.
* Groudon is the beast who has the power to expand the land by scattering rain clouds and making water evaporate with light and heat. Is found in the Cave of Origin in Pokémon Ruby, and Terra Cave in Emerald. It is the object of Team Magma's reverence.
* Rayquaza is the legendary dragon found in the Sky Pillar in the Generation III games. It is the protector of the skies. It was seen in the seventh movie.
Clear-left

Other legendary Pokémon
* Jirachi is the legendary wish-granting Pokémon who was available from Pokémon Colosseum's bonus disk in North America and available within Pokémon Channel in the UK, Europe and Australia (PAL Encoded Regions). It is likened to Mew and Celebi. Jirachi is the star of the sixth movie.
* Deoxys is a Pokémon with strange alien and virus-like characteristics. It changes its form depending on the game version in which it is found. The Auroraticket used to obtain Deoxys has been given out in North America at the New York Pokémon Center and 2004's Pokémon Rocks America events. Two different Deoxys were featured in the seventh movie, while a third was featured in AG171.

Generation IV
The Generation IV games feature a total of 14 Legendary Pokémon, the most of any generation.
Lake trio
Fairy-like creatures that each dwell in a trio of three lakes. Each represents a different aspect of the human mind.
* Uxie is related to knowledge.
* Mesprit is related to emotion.
* Azelf is related to the will.

Legendary dragons
These two Pokémon were the mascots for Diamond and Pearl, and have the ability to warp the fabric of reality.
* Dialga controls time.
* Palkia controls space.

Sea Pokémon
* Manaphy is refered to as the "Prince of the Sea". It must be hatched from an egg and has the power to swap the hearts of people and Pokémon, putting them into different bodies.
* Phione is the result of breeding Manaphy with a Ditto. It is a relative species of Manaphy that prefers warmer waters, and lacks Manaphy's ability to perform Heart Swap.

Other legendary Pokémon
* Giratina is a Ghost/Dragon-type Pokémon that is found in the maze called the Return Cave.
* Heatran is a Fire/Steel-type Pokémon that can be found in Hard Mountain.
* Regigigas is the Normal-type Regi that can be found only when the three other Regis are reunited.
* Cresselia is the Psychic-type Crescent Pokémon that resembles the crescent moon.
* Darkrai is a Pokémon that can induce sleep and control dreams, it is active during nights with no moon.
* Shaymin is a Gratitude Pokémon that curls up in flower-beds and often goes unnoticed.
* Arceus is a legendary Normal-type Pokémon that created outer space.

Pokémon with legendary characteristics
* Arcanines species classification is Legendary.
* In the world of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Ninetales is considered a Legendary Pokémon due to it being illusive, incredibly long-lived, and posessing the ability to cast powerful curses against anyone that touches its tails.
* Unown are a mysterious species of Pokémon based on the English alphabet. Professor Oak referred to them as Legendary, probably because they were featured heavily in ancient myths and legends and because they can display large amounts of otherworldly power in swarms. Also, like legendaries, they cannot breed.
* Lucario and its master Sir Aaron were forever revered because of their help pacifying an ancient battle, as seen in the eighth movie. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, a Lucario was regarded as a legendary Rescue Team Leader in the distant past, and "Lucario Rank" is the highest attainable team rank in the game.
* Ancient Pokémon, such as Aerodactyl, Kabuto and Omanyte are extinct and therefore are among myth. Although it is not extinct, Relicanth is sometimes considered an ancient Pokémon.
Towers in Ecruteak
There's a legend that has been passed down by Ecruteak City Gym Leaders for many years:

: Two towers... Two Pokémon... But when one burned down, both Pokémon flew away, never to return.

700 years ago, the people of Ecruteak built two nine-tier towers with the hopes of fostering friendship and hope between Pokémon and humans. They were the Brass Tower in the east, which was said to awaken Pokémon, and the Tin Tower in the west, where Pokémon were said to rest. Both towers became the roost of powerful flying Pokémon: Ho-oh and Lugia.

However, about 150 years before the games' events, a lightning bolt struck the Brass Tower. It was engulfed in flames that raged for three days. A sudden downpour finally put out the blaze, but it had already burnt to the ground. Three nameless Pokémon perished in the fire. But Ho-oh descended from the sky and resurrected them. The Pokémon are said to embody three powers: the lightning that struck the tower, the fire that burned the tower, and the rain that put out the fire. When the Pokémon appeared, they struck terror in those who saw their rise. The three Pokémon, knowing their own power, fled, running like the wind off into the grassland.

Ho-oh and Lugia haven't been seen since the fire. According to legend, when the souls of Pokémon and humans commune, upon the emergence of a trainer who has the ability to touch the souls of Pokémon, Ho-oh will return from the heavens.

A similar legend is addressed in the anime. In A Ghost of a Chance, Morty says the two towers are the original Tin Tower, which burned down, and a rebuilt one. He says that invaders came and tried to steal Ho-oh, who resisted and fled, and then they burned down the tower. When the legend is revisited in For Ho-oh the Bells Toll, however, the story more closely parallels the game version, but the war aspect remains. Ash Ketchum seems to fulfill the prophesy as a trainer who has the ability to touch the souls of Pokémon, as he has often encountered both Ho-oh and Suicune.

Ruins of Alph
Main article: Ruins of Alph

The Ruins of Alph provide a link to an ancient civilization. Although no one knows exactly who build them, research indicates that the ruins are from about 1500 years ago. Along the walls is an ancient language based on the shapes of the various Unown. In Pokémon Crystal, an ancient message can be found and decoded if the player can correctly perform certain tasks:

: OUR WORDS SHALL REMAIN HERE FOR THE AGES
: THUS WE SHALL ERECT A POKéMON STATUE OUTSIDE
: THEY POSSESS GREAT INSIGHT AND REFUSE THE OUTSIDE WORLD
: WE HUMANS MUST LEARN TO WALK IN HARMONY WITH THEM
: WE DEPART FOR THEIR SAKES

The message appears to be from the ancients in regards to the Unown.

Pokémopolis
A Gengar and Alakazam, both of gigantic proportions, fought and destroyed the ancient civilization of Pokémopolis, where humans built temples to honor Pokémon. In the episode The Ancient Puzzle of Pokémopolis, Ash and friends discovered the ancient city, and inadvertently awoke the dueling Pokémon. The giant Pokémon, which might have gone on to destroy the world, were put to sleep by a giant singing Jigglypuff.

The legend reads:
:Beware the two great Powers of Destruction. The Shadow of the Dark Device will grapple with the prisoner of the Unearthly Urn. The Sacred City will be no more as day is swallowed up by night. Darker still for you when they return to lay waste the world. But no human knows the secret to soothe the power and guide them back to the Shadow World.

Shamouti Island
An ancient prophecy circulates around the Orange Islands that says:

: Disturb not the harmony of Fire, Ice, or Lightning
: Lest these Titans wreak destruction
: Upon the world in which they clash

: Though the Water's Great Guardian shall arise to quell the fighting
: Alone its song will fail
: Thus the earth shall turn to Ash

: O Chosen One
Legend of the Regis
In addition to the Unown, Braille has also been used to tell legends. In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, the player can use the Braille to uncover Regirock, Regice, and Registeel.

The legend, found on various rocks in the Sealed Chamber, reads:

: IN THIS CAVE WE HAVE LIVED.
: WE OWE ALL TO THE POKéMON.
: BUT, WE SEALED THE POKéMON AWAY.
: WE FEARED IT.
: THOSE WITH COURAGE, THOSE WITH HOPE.
: OPEN A DOOR. AN ETERNAL POKéMON WAITS.
Ash Ketchum (Japanese: サトシ Satoshi, French: Sacha, German: Ash Ketchum, Korean: Jiu) is the main character of both the Pokémon anime and the manga The Electric Tale of Pikachu. His Japanese voice actress is 松本梨香 Rica Matsumoto, his English voice actresses are Veronica Taylor (EP001-AG145) and Sarah Natochenny (AG146-present) and his Brazilian voice actor is Fabio Lucindo.

Ash is apparently based on the main character of Pokémon Red and Blue, Red. He shares his name with the creator of the Pokémon franchise, Satoshi Tajiri. His Japanese name can be taken to mean "wisdom" or "reason" (智), and his English name has many meanings. His English last name is a pun on the original English Pokémon motto, "Gotta Catch 'em All!" As for his first name, some say that "Ash" has the same letters found in Satoshi.

In the anime
Character
Ash's goal, as described in the first episode, Pokémon! I Choose You!, is to be the world's greatest Pokémon Master. Ash began his journey at the age of 10 as a warm-hearted and well-intentioned but stubborn and unskilled Pokémon trainer. He was forced to accept the irreverent Pikachu from Professor Oak as his starter Pokémon because he carelessly broke his alarm clock and woke up late on the day he was set to get his first Pokémon. He was determined to achieve his goal, however, and when he showed his willingness to give up his own safety to keep Pikachu safe, he formed a strong bond of friendship with his Pokémon which would set his course for the future.

However, from that point, Ash still had a lot to learn about becoming a trainer. He caught his first Pokémon by luck, knew nothing about battling, and showed a reluctance to admit when he was wrong. Many of his first Gym badges were given to him out of pity or gratitude rather than claiming a victory in battle over the Gym Leaders. Every time he thought he was doing well, he would somehow cross paths with his childhood rival, Gary Oak, who always reminded Ash that he was always a step or seven behind.

Ash's dedication to his goal paid off over time, and after earning his first eight badges, he competed in the Indigo League, and advanced further in the rounds than Gary. After recovering from his defeat, he continued on to improve his skill, take on new challenges, and compete in more Pokémon League competitions.

Ash has changed a great deal over the course of the series, particularly in regards to his skill at Pokémon training, but his earnestness and determination have remained. Never straying from his goal, he has remained loyal to his friends, his family, and his supporters, but most of all his Pokémon. Ash became a great trainer by learning to find and use the inner strength of each of his Pokémon by bonding with them and learning where their hidden abilities lie. For example, he uses his Pikachu's speed to outmaneuver larger foes and attack. Additionally, during the first season of the series, while Ash trained not to further himself, but instead to catch more Pokémon than his rival, Gary, he later slowed his pace which allowed him (as well as the writers of the anime) to focus on the individual traits of each Pokémon. At the Johto League Silver Conference, with great humility and maturity, Ash finally won a battle against his old rival, signifying a great milestone in his history. His maturity has also increased in his dealings with Pokémon, as when a Mankey stole his hat in EP025, he screamed and yelled at it, but when an Aipom did the same in AG178, he stated merely that he would feel strange without a hat.

In nearly every episode of the anime, Ash befriends someone who will influence him and cause him to strive to become a better trainer. Although he is not a dependent individual, he is still young and has learned to make his way relying on his friends. His closest friends have joined him on his Pokémon journey through the years: Misty, Brock, Tracey, May, Max, and Dawn.

He has traversed much of the Pokémon world and has thus far participated in four Pokémon League regional competitions, but he is still learning new things about Pokémon all the time.

Ash apparently has a close connection with Legendary Pokémon, especially Ho-Oh and Lugia. In the English dub of the second movie, he was revealed to be "The Chosen One" - the one who would bring balance back to the world.

Family
Ash lived with his mother, Delia Ketchum, until he left for his Pokémon journey at the age of ten.

His father is never introduced. The anime suggests that his father was once a Pokémon trainer, but it is unclear whether he is still living. There is great controversy as to whom Ash's father really is, but the writers have chosen to not focus on this aspect of Ash's life. Common characters put forward by fans for the role are Giovanni, Professor Oak and Silver.

Ash is an only child, breaking from the tradition of several other main characters, with the exception of Dawn and possibly Tracey, whose siblings are often a foil or focal point in their lives.
Trivia
*Ash has caught 44 <!-- Count good as of DP013: the evolution of Mukkuru into Mukubird--> different kinds of Pokémon, including evolutions and counting Larvitar, Haunter, and Raticate, even though Larvitar and Haunter were not officially his. The original tagline for the dub was "Gotta Catch 'Em All!", but Ash has only caught 8.92% of the current number of Pokémon.
*So far, every time Ash becomes the champion of something, he then battles and gets defeated by Gary a few episodes later, before heading off to a new region.
*At one time, Ash was transformed into a Pikachu. This transformed state is sometimes referred to as Ashachu.
*Ash has captured each generation's Grass starter Pokémon (Bulbasaur, Chikorita, Treecko, Turtwig).
*Ash has captured a form of each Flying-type Pokémon that players can encounter early in different games: Pidgeot, Noctowl, Swellow, and Staravia.
*Ash always loses against one of the gym leaders.
*Ash always befriends someone shortly before the regional tournament. That person will beat Ash later on in the semifinals.

In the manga
The manga version of Ash Ketchum is based on the anime version, but there are many differences after both versions took different directions. For example, while anime Ash is indifferent to romance or members of the opposite (or same, some may argue) sex, manga Ash has a big crush on Gary's sister, May Oak.
