Beauty and the Beach (Japanese: アオプルコのきゅうじつ Holiday at Aopulco) is the 18th episode of the Pokémon anime. It was first broadcast in Japan on July 29, 1997 and in the United States as a "lost episode" special on June 24, 2000.
spoilers
Synopsis
Ash and company have finally arrived in Porta Vista, a beachside tourist town. Wasting no time, Ash, Brock and Pikachu change into swimsuits and jump into the ocean. Misty arrives a few minutes later, also in a swimsuit, and Ash stares at her. She asks why he's looking at her, and he cracks that "It's unusual to see you looking like a girl!" This earns him a beach ball to the face by an angry Misty.

Team Rocket, still using their Gyarados submarine spy on beachgoers from their vantage point underwater. They decide to steal the money of the wealthy tourists. Suddenly, Jessie notices a speeding boat heading in their direction. The boat is piloted by Brock, who thought Ash borrowed it because Pikachu was on the boat. The boat collides with the sub and eventually crashes into a dock. Moe, the owner of the boat, comes out to survey the damage. Ash, Brock and Misty volunteer to work to help pay the cost of repairing the boat and the dock. Moe agrees to this.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket's sub has washed up onto a private beach and they're greeted by a woman named Brutella. James asks if they can work for her restaurant to help pay for repairs to their sub, and she agrees. Later, it's revealed that both Moe and Brutella are restaurateurs and rivals. For a while, Brutella's restaurant has more customers and Team Rocket taunts Ash and his friends over this. Ash decides to have his Pokémon help out as well. Squirtle and Pikachu are told to hand out fliers advertising Moe's; Pidgeotto and Charmander are to help keep the grill going in the kitchen, and Bulbasaur is assigned to help Misty do her waitress duties. This works well until MTR sabotages everything (sending fliers flying, spraying oil on the stove, and throwing banana peels on the floor to trip up Misty and Bulbasaur), causing the crowd to leave Moe's restaurant for Brutella's. Ash apologizes for messing everything up.

Brutella arrives with Team Rocket a few minutes later and tells Moe that he needs to pay her the money he owes her. If he's unable to pay by the next day, she'll take his boat as payment. Moe is despondent, as he doesn't think he'll have the money by then. He explains that he'd planned to take a world cruise in his boat. Ash encourages him not to give up on his dream.

Then, two familiar faces appear: Professor Oak and Ash's mother, Delia Ketchum. Ash is surprised to see both of them. Professor Oak explains that the Beach Beauty and Pokémon Costume Contest is set to start shortly, and he suggests handing out fliers to the audience. He also suggests that Misty enter and (hopefully) win some prize money to help out Moe. Ash sends out Pidgeotto, who blankets the beach and town with fliers. Soon, Moe's restaurant is full again, much to Brutella's dismay.

As the contest begins, Moe sits with Delia and Professor Oak. He explains how Ash encouraged him not to give up on his dream. Delia says that she and the professor are in town with the Pallet Town Volunteer Patrol. The contest begins, with Brock as emcee. Misty is the first contestant, and she uses her Starmie and Ash's Squirtle to form a UFO. Team Rocket's Ekans and Koffing are next, and they're costumed as an Omastar. They're kicked off the stage by Gary Oak and his cheerleaders, who are apparently the next contestants. Gary grabs the microphone from Brock and insults Ash, who jumps out of his seat and heads for the stage.

Meanwhile, Brutella tells Jessie and James that she knows they're Team Rocket members and that she's fixed their submarine. She blackmails them into stopping the contest and destroying Moe's restaurant so that the audience will come to her restaurant instead. Jessie tells Brutella that they can destroy things without even trying.

Back onstage, Ash challenges the always-cocky Gary to a battle, but Gary refuses, stating that he doesn't want to battle an amateur trainer. Brock steps between the two rivals before Ash's anger gets the best of him. Just then, the Gyarados submarine explodes from the water, causing panic. People run away, thinking that it's a real Gyarados on a rampage. Ash grabs the microphone and tells the remaining frightened audience members that it's a mecha, not a Pokémon. Team Rocket then fires a heat-seeking missile from the sub. Under Gary's skeptical eye, Ash sends out Pidgeotto and Charmander. Charmander's Flamethrower attack hits the missile, which turns and changes course: straight for the submarine! Team Rocket pedal furiously to get away, but they crash into Brutella's restaurant, which is then destroyed by the missile.

Ash and his friends say farewell to Moe, who is heading off on his long-awaited cruise. Ash also says goodbye to Professor Oak and his mother, who is holding a trophy inscribed with the words: "First Place in Our Hearts: Ash Ketchum."
* Of the 4 banned episodes that have aired on Japanese television, this is the first one that was banned in all countries outside of Japan. The reason why it was banned was because there is a scene halfway into the episode where James crossdresses and wears inflatable breasts for a beauty contest. Although intended for comic effect, the intense sexual nature of the scene caused so much controversy that the whole episode was banned for almost 3 years, until it was aired as an edited version titled "The Lost Episode" in 2000. The ending of this episode was shown as a flashback in Hypno's Naptime, but this was not edited out of the dub, even during which time this episode was (and still is) banned. Another reason why it was banned was because there were many sexual references throughout the episode.
* This episode marks the first chronological appearance of Team Rocket's Gyarados submarine.
* This episode, along with The Psychic Sidekicks and The Fortune Hunters, has never been released on VHS and DVD.
* Even though it was premiered on June 24, 2000, this episode was rerun only once on August 18, 2000 and then never shown again in the United States.<!-- I doubt it was shown anywhere else. The US is the only one who saw it twice. -->
* This episode was not dubbed when Nathan Price was voicing Meowth, so it is (chronologically) the first episode in which Maddie Blaustein provides his voice.
* This episode's dub title is a reference to the fairytale, Beauty and the Beast. It shares this trait with the episode Beauty and the Breeder.
* Misty's beach ball appears similar to a Master Ball.
* Contrary to popular belief, Delia Ketchum does not win the Beauty contest in either version, as she never entered. The winner of the contest is actually unknown and unspecified.
* Of all banned episodes, this is the only one that was intended to be skipped completely by 4Kids, and ironically, was the only one that eventually made it to the air.
** It is also the episode which has the dubious honor of having the longest time between its original Japanese airing and its first dub airing, at nearly three years.

Errors
* In the English dub, Brock mistakenly calls Misty's Starmie a Staryu.
* Meowth's paw is seen with pads when talking to Jessie about fixing the Gyarados Submarine. Meowth in general are not usually seen as having this body feature.

Dub edits
* In the English version, Moe tells Misty that she reminds him of his granddaughter, while as in the Japanese version, he thinks about "having fun" with her when she's eight years older.
* Ash and Brock were inviting everyone to have peculiar dishes such as French-fried flounder, seven-layered crab cakes, squid on a stick, and clam-juice snow-cones in the dubbed version. In the original, they only invited everyone to have ramen and shaved-ice and to take a break from the sun.
* The term "Oil" on the oil barrel that Meowth is pumping into the restaurant is edited out.
* Brock's mention of the "$1,000 prize for the winner of each category" is dub added.
* James was wearing an inflatable bikini. This scene, which caused the episode to be banned for almost three years for being unable to get past the censors, was cut completely from the dub.
**In one of the cut-out scenes, James says to Misty, "When you're older, you'll have a chest like this".
**After Misty finishes her turn at the contest, the next footage shows James showing off his inflatable bikini. Then, their Pokémon posing as an Omastar comes on stage. Only the Pokémon were seen in the dub.
**After Brock comments about Gary's cheerleaders, Jessie and James (with the bikini still on) are seen fuming before being pulled aside by Brutella. In the dub, this scene skips and goes straight to their conversation with Brutella.
* Originally, the "Who's That Pokémon?" in the Japanese version was Brutella. It showed her dodging a bunch of random objects. Afterward, she sticks out her tongue and is answered by having a sink drop on her head. In the English dub, it was Pidgeotto. The last object thrown at her had the OLM logo on it.
* Even though it was a first season episode, when premiered in the US, the Orange Islands theme song was played instead. Also, during the part where fliers for the contest was shown, the theme was played in the background. This may suggest that this episode was a special for the Orange Islands dub rather than an actual episode itself.
* This is one of the few occasions where the Japanese writing on signs and fliers is not painted out in the American version.
* Gary refers to his cheerleaders as his "girlfriends" in the original version, and his "fan club" in the dub.
* James's response to Brutella's command to destroy Moe's restaurant is different between the two versions. Originally, James says "We'll go through the fire and through the water!" (which is also the first line in Aim to Be a Pokémon Master). In the dub, he says "You can count on us! Destroying things is our specialty!"
*In the original scene where Jessie retakes command of the Gyarados Sub, she uses the "-baba" suffix, a normal trademark of the hag, by accident. Because Brutella doesn't use that term in the dub, the scene is rewritten to simply have Brutella's raspy voice rubbing off on Jessie instead.
* In the Japanese version, no winner is specified, and it's implied that Delia was only holding on to it for the winner. In the dub, Ash is the winner, being awarded for saving the contest from Team Rocket and Brutella.

I've been reading the Pokemon's physiology but I found it somewhat odd, I'm a medical student and I suggest that the Physiology term should be change in Anatomy because of the fact that when we define physiology, it means more on the function of the body while in anatomy, more on defining or explaining each part of the body...well try to define those.. just a suggestion but more on facts.ahmm another if we will use physiology it should be partnered with anatomy, meaning... we should put Anatomy and Physiology but if we will put that we need to add more data for all Pokemon, .thanks..--<span style="color:#D5AA00">GASPER</span><span style="color:#C0C0C0"><small>shut...</small></span> 13:25, 27 June 2010 (UTC)
When i posted in the talk page for 44hy regarding trivia, and checked back weeks later, it was gone! When i looked in the history awhile later thinking someone had removed it, it wasn't there!
Characteristics
The Dragon-type is statistically the best of all types overall. Because of the minimal amount of weaknesses that they have, they often find a way onto trainers' teams. The downside to the supposed power that they have is that they are slightly harder to raise, with many of them not evolving from their first stage to their second until a level at which many Pokémon are near their final evolutions, and their final evolution near level 50, such as a Dragonite or a Garchomp. Most Dragon-type Pokémon have high Attack and Special Attack, and paired with their incredibly diverse movepools, they are one of the best in the games.

The Dragon-type is good offensively. Even though only Dragons themselves are Dragon-weak, the only type that resists Dragon is Steel, giving them good use of their STAB. Dragon/Fire, a common attacking combination among Dragons, is resisted together only by Heatran. Dragon Dance is also a very common move for physical sweepers.

Defensively, they have key resistances to Electric, Grass, Water and Fire, enabling them to block certain Pokémon. However, every fully-evolved, non-legendary Dragon-type except Kingdra has a double weakness to Ice moves, due to their secondary types.

As of Generation IV, all fully-evolved Dragon-types also have a secondary type.

When used in contests, Dragon-type moves typically become Cool moves, but some may be Smart or Tough moves.

In total, there are nineteen Pokémon with the Dragon-type, one more than the Ghost, thus making it the Pokémon type with the second fewest number of Pokémon.
Trivia
* In Generation I, there was only one Dragon-type attack, Dragon Rage; but because it always deals 40 HP of damage, there was no way to do variable Dragon-type damage. There is speculation that this is the reason that Gyarados is not part Dragon-type.
** Also, Dratini's family were the only Dragon Pokémon of Generation I
* It has been speculated that if Eevee receives another evolution in a future game, it would be Dragon, being the only formerly all-special type left that Eevee has yet to evolve into.
** If it followed the pure-type pattern of the other Eeveelutions, this would make it the only pure fully-evolved Dragon-type Pokémon so far.
* There are only eleven Dragon-type moves, the fewest of any type.
** Eight of those eleven moves are Cool moves in Contests. The only three that aren't are new in Generation IV, meaning that in Hoenn Contests, all Dragon-type moves were Cool moves.
** The Dragon-type also has the fewest number of non-damaging moves out of all of the types, with only one, Dragon Dance.
* Even though the Dragon-type has always been considered nearly legendary, no actual Dragon-type legendaries were introduced until Generation III's Latios, Latias, and Rayquaza.
* The Dragon-type resists moves of the primary types of all main series starter Pokémon available for players, including Pikachu.
* The Dragon-type is one of the two types that are weak to their own moves, together with the Ghost.
* The Dragon-type has the dubious honor of being one of three types that will never be doubly super effective against any Pokémon, as it is only super effective against one type. It shares this trait with the Poison which is only super effective against Grasss, and the Normal, which isn't super effective against anything.
** By the same manner, the Dragon-type is also the only type that will never be doubly resisted by anything, as only Steel resists it.
* Charizard, Gyarados, Aerodactyl and Sceptile are often considered to be dragons due to their appearance, egg group, movepool and use by in-game trainers as dragons. However, they are not Dragon-types.
* The final evolutions of all pure Dragon-type Pokémon are pseudo-legendaries.
* The Dragon-type is statistically the best type, as its average fully evolved stat never goes below base 95.
* All pure Dragon-type Pokémon have a different ability from their final evolution; Dratini and Dragonair have Shed Skin, whereas Dragonite has Inner Focus, and Bagon and Shelgon have Rock Head, whereas Salamence has Intimidate.
* Only four Dragon-type Pokémon are neither legendary nor part of a pseudo-legendary's family; all of them evolve from non-Dragon-type Pokémon.
* Not counting numerous legendary Pokémon, the only dual-type Dragon Pokémon that does not sport a double weakness to the Ice is Kingdra.
** Most of these legendary Dragons don't have any weakness to the Ice-type at all. In fact, only three dual-type Dragon Pokémon have a normal weakness to the Ice-type: Latias, Latios, and Giratina.
*** Interestingly, they are all weak to Dark and Ghost because of their other type.
* Dragon-type is also unique in the fact that they can all learn Draco Meteor by move tutor, and are the only type that can learn it at all (excluding Jirachi and Smeargle).

The Mew glitch is a software bug in all three of the Generation I Game Boy Games, discovered in 2003. This glitch is famous for allowing players to catch any non-glitched Pokémon in the game, most notably Mew, without the use of GameShark or other hacking device. Method #3 of the Mew glitch allows one to catch many glitch Pokémon as well as regular Pokémon.

Methods
Below are the methods on acquiring Mew in the Generation I Game Boy Games.

Method #1
To acquire Mew at the earliest point possible in the game, the player must not have defeated the Swimmer in Cerulean Gym and the Junior Trainer (the one who says "I saw your feat<!--Yes, the word IS spelled this way in the games, and no, it is NOT a misspelling.--> from the grass" when the battle with him begins) on Route 24 (West of Nugget Bridge) in the grass. It is prudent to save before doing this. The player must defeat Nugget Bridge as usual without engaging a battle with the Junior Trainer.

Before attempting this glitch, it is ideal to have several Poké Balls stocked up. Note that the player must have an Abra that can teleport, and therefore cannot be playing Yellow version unless he or she has reached Route 5 or traded for one prior to attempting the glitch.

The player first heals at the Cerulean City Pokémon Center, so they may Teleport there later.

The player then needs to return to Route 24 and catch (or trade over) an Abra, or withdraw the Abra if it is in the PC, then return to Route 24 if not already there. The player then needs to stand above the Junior Trainer so that he is just offscreen. Then the player needs to move down until seen and immediately press START. The player then needs to use Teleport with Abra. If done correctly, the Trainer should get the indicative exclamation mark while the player teleports. At this point, the Start menu will not work until the player battles someone though it is imperative to not battle anything or anyone else or talk to anyone (including the Youngster with the level 17 Slowpoke on Route 25 if the player wishes to use the alternate method, see below).

The player then needs to head east from the Pokémon Center into the Cerulean City Gym and battle the Swimmer. After defeating the Swimmer (the Start menu should be available upon defeating him), the player then must head to Nugget Bridge and after several steps the Start Menu appears. Upon closing of the menu, it should begin a battle with a Lv. 7 Mew.

Note: This method, if executed correctly, will always result in a wild Mew regardless of the last seen Pokémon's Special stat.

Method #1 (Alternate method)
The player must follow the steps for Method #1 exactly until they teleport from the Junior Trainer using Abra.
Again, the Start menu will not work after teleporting. The player then needs to head north towards Route 25 and battle the Youngster. As in Method #1, it is imperative to not battle anything or anyone else or talk to anyone before then. The player must engage in battle by him seeing them (and must walk against the wall to be seen, not towards him or the game will freeze).

After defeating the Youngster, the player then needs to walk towards Cerulean City. After a small amount of steps, the Start menu appears. Closing it should begin a battle against a Lv. 7 Mew.

If used on other trainers other than the Youngster, it will often be a different Pokémon (depending on the trainer's Pokémon's Special stat); for instance, doing so with the Lass below the Youngster will result in finding a Lapras, which is normally only available at Silph Co.

Method #2
For this method, the player needs to go to the Gambler in front of the Underground Tunnel entrance east of Saffron City, and stand above him so that he is just off screen. The player then needs to take one step down closer to him, but make sure that he does not see the player, and then immediately press START. If the player is spotted, the glitch would fail. If it is successful, the menu will appear and the player will be able to Fly, Dig, or Teleport. The player needs to use Fly to reach Cerulean City. While flying, the exclamation point that usually appears above a Trainer's head when they wish to battle the player will appear. The player then needs to go to Route 24 and, just like in method #1, defeat the Youngster that owns a Slowpoke (with him walking towards the player to start the battle, or the game will freeze). After defeating him, the player needs to Fly to Lavender Town and head west to Route 8. The START menu will appear. Pressing B will make Mew appear at Level 7.

(Note: The player must battle the Slowpoke trainer on Route 24, but the player does not have to battle the Gambler in front of the Underground Path. Any trainer will do. One option is to battle one of the two bikers who are next to each other on Route 14, then battle the Slowpoke trainer, then return to Route 14. Because Route 14 is isolated, players should use Repel to prevent running into wild Pokémon in the grass and messing up the trick.)

Method #3
This method is also known as the "extended Mew glitch" and the "Ditto glitch" due to the involvement of Ditto.

For this method, the player first needs a Pokémon with a Special Stat of 21. It doesn't matter if the stat was naturally leveled or boosted with calcium as long as it's not due to an in-battle special boosting skill. Once the player has this Pokémon, the player needs to find ANY trainer in the game that will engage in battle the moment the trainer is on screen and the player is in the trainer's line of sight. The most common examples are the Gambler east of Saffron City and the Junior Trainer in the high grass west of Nugget Bridge. Often people have already fought these trainers, so other later-game trainers include a couple Bikers on Route 17 (Cycling Road) or the four trainers on the west side of Route 14 (three Bikers and one Bird Keeper). The player then needs to get the trainer off screen. Next, take a single step towards him, enough for him to start the battle, and immediately press START before he spots the player and the exclamation point appears. Once the player has pressed start and the start menu appears, the trainer needs to Fly, Dig, or Teleport elsewhere. The location being traveled to must have a path via which the player can walk both to a place where there is wild Ditto (Route 15 east of Fuchsia City in Red and Blue and Pokémon Mansion in Yellow) and after to a place with a trainer to fight. This is because the start button will no longer work until after a battle with a trainer (to be mentioned) because the game has been tricked into thinking it's in battle mode. Once the battle with the trainer the player picked was evaded successfully, the player then needs to battle ANY trainer in the game, as long as there is one space between the player and the trainer when the battle is initiated so that the trainer has to walk up to the player and the player doesn't approach the trainer directly. After defeating the trainer, the player needs to find a wild Ditto, and battle it until it uses Transform on the player's Pokémon with the Special Stat of 21. After defeating the Ditto (with any of the player's six Pokémon), the player needs to avoid running into any other wild Pokémon and/or battling any other trainers, and go back to the Route where the trainer the player first evaded is located (for the Gambler, east of Saffron City, for the Bikers, Route 14; etc.). Once the Route is approached, the start menu will automatically appear. The player needs to press the B Button. A battle will begin immediately and a lvl 7 Mew will appear.

This method can be used to catch any Pokémon in the game, even some glitch Pokémon. While a Pokémon with a special stat of 21 will give one Mew, using a Pokémon with a different special stat will give the player a different Pokémon. For example, in the Red/Blue versions, if a Pokémon with a Special stat of 198 is used, a glitch called "LM4" will appear instead of Mew. (See ). There are, however, some glitch Pokémon such as 8 and n which cannot be caught using this method. Some Special stats will cause glitch Trainers to appear. They may be glitched versions of regular in-game trainers, such as Bruno with Blaine's party.

Why level 7?
In Method #3, A Pokémon encountered using the Mew glitch is most commonly level 7 because as one Pokémon's Special Stat corresponds to the index number of the Pokémon, the Pokémon's level also corresponds to the attack stage of the last encountered Pokémon. This is usually 7, presuming the opponent's attack stage is neutral, but will range from 1 to 13 depending on how many attack boosts or drops the opponent received. For example, if the player used Growl on the Pokémon six times, he or she could encounter a level 1 Pokémon. However, Pokémon ranging from levels 14 to 256 (0) cannot be found this way, because a Pokémon cannot have more than six attack boosts or drops.

If Method #3 is used and a Glitch Trainer is encountered, they will have a different team corresponding to the "level" number. Usually the game will attempt to load their 7th team in memory. Most Trainers only have one set team, causing glitchy teams if Growl is not used to lower the "level" to 1 (since they do not have a 2nd, 3rd, etc. team). The only exception is Prof. Oak and the Rival, who have three different teams based on the player's starter. This is the only way to face Prof. Oak with his original team.

Glitch Pokémon
Many of the Glitch Pokémon encountered are unobtainable, as they correspond to Glitch Trainers or are unstable when encountered. As a result if other methods such as evolution do not work the glitch Pokémon may be unobtainable without an external device. Some of these glitches also correspond with glitchy trainers such as 'Chief', 'ZZAZZ', and 'Jacred' with the ZZAZZ Glitch having dangerous side-effects.

Overview
The glitch in fact works as follows: Any Trainer can be used for the first section (Junior Trainer), as long as the Trainer notices the player as soon as he/she enters the game screen, and that the player is walking towards them from either the top, left or right (walking from below will not work). Any movement move (Teleport, Dig, Fly) can be used to trigger the glitch, or Escape Rope if in a dungeon. For the Youngster, any Pokémon will do as long as it can be fought without walking up to a Trainer. To finish off the glitch, the player must return to the route of the Trainer he/she "evaded." The Pokémon that the player will find wild is dependent on the Special stat of the Pokémon the player last faced (wild or from the Trainer), and so using a Pokémon with the Special the player needs and finding a Ditto that transforms will produce an identical effect. For the record, the required Special stat for Mew is 21 (This is based on hexadecimal numbers, so one can get the appropriate number for a different Pokémon from a hacking device code list, then translate it to decimal).
Advancing/dropping levels
Completing a level is not the only way to advance. Sometimes, quitting a level several times in a row will also cause an advance, often jumping several levels higher. At the same time, quitting several times in a row may also cause a drop in level, but often not as severe as a drop via Voltorb.

I haven't figured out the exact mechanics to this. I suspect it has something to do with the total amount of coins you're earning per level, but in no way am I sure. Should this information be added as is or should I wait for someone with more information to add it, so that it sounds better once it's in?
