Wailord (Japanese: ホエルオー Whaloh) is a Water Pokémon.

It evolves from Wailmer starting at level 40.

Biology
Physiology
Wailord are mammalian Pokémon that are well known as the largest Pokémon discovered so far. They have small beady eyes, a huge mouth, a throat that is lined with grooves and four white spots aligned on its back. It has two pairs of fins along its side and a horizontal tail at the back. It's vaguely shaped like a torpedo or a blimp.

Despite its enormous size, it is able to breed with many land-based Pokémon that are much smaller. This is due to it being in the Ground, a reference to how whales are classified as mammals.

Gender differences
None.

Special abilities
Wailord are able to take in large amounts of air and dive to incredible depths with just one massive breath. Since it is based on a whale and has a blowhole, it is one of the few Pokémon that are able to use Water Spout. With their large mouths, they are able to eat extreme quantities of food.

Behavior
Wailord are known to live in large packs, called pods, for traveling as well as finding prey. When chasing prey, Wailord herds them by leaping out of the water and making a humongous splash.

Habitat
The only habitat that's expansive enough for these gigantic Pokémon is the open ocean.

Diet
Pokémon food
Despite being so large, they probably feed on some of the smallest creatures in the ocean, swallowing entire schools in a single gulp.

In the anime
Wailord first appeared in Having a Wailord of a Time. The Float Whale Pokémon was stuck on a beach near a Pokémon Center. Team Rocket tried to haul it away, but a Combusken foiled their plans.

A Wailmer that befriended a man named Robin evolved into a Wailord in Island Time. This Wailord transported Ash and friends across the ocean until they came across a ship heading for Ever Grande City.

Along with their pre-evolved form, Wailord appeared in Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea.

In Leading a Stray!, a family of Wailord appeared. One Wailmer was separated from its family, and Ash helped it get back. By the end of the episode, this Wailmer evolved into a Wailord.

Trivia
* Wailord is the tallest Pokémon in existence, but only the tenth heaviest.
** Wailord is the only Pokémon which was the tallest in the generation of its debut that was not outdone in the following generation (as happened to Onix and Steelix).
** Despite the fact that real-life fully grown blue whales weigh nearly 180 tonne, Wailord does not even weigh more than a half tonne, less than one sixth the weight of a real blue whale's tongue.
* A Wailord, along with a Relicanth, is necessary in the party in order to unleash the three legendary golems from their sleeping places within the Sealed Chamber in the Generation III games.
**This should mean that Wailord have existed for a long time, since the legendary golems have been sealed away a long time ago, and Relicanth lived a long time ago.
* Wailord is well-known for the HSOWA joke.
* Wailord has the fourth highest base HP stat of all Pokémon, after Blissey, Chansey, and Wobbuffet, in that order.
** It does have the highest HP of all water types. With that, Wailord has the second highest single base stat out of all the water-types, after Cloyster's Defense.
* In the games Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness and Pokémon Colosseum, Wailord was resized to fit in the battlefield. In Pokémon Battle Revolution however, its size matches its Pokédex entry.
* Wailord is the only Pokémon in Ranger: Shadows of Almia that doesn't need to be captured to be added to the Browser.
** Additionally, its Browser entry states that it is too big to capture.
Origin
This Pokémon is based on the blue whale, the largest known animal to ever exist. It also resembles a submarine, a blimp, and a torpedo.
Name origin
Wailord's name is a combination of whale and lord. Wail may also refer to the sounds or songs that whales and this Pokémon might make.

Whaloh is probably a combination of whale, 吠える hoeru, to cry or bellow, and 王 ō, king.
Sure, Heatran created Stark Mountain... but if it's more Heatrans in the anime, anyone of them can do so. Unlike Arceus, which it only can be one of - after all, he was the ORIGINAL One and created the friggin universe. == Based on "Amphicoelias" fragillimus? ==
I have no idea how people deduce that. To most people, "Amphicoelias" would appear as Diplodocus did in Walking With Dinosaurs, not like a brachiosaurid or something. Granted that a 45* neck angle now seems probable in most if not all sauropods, but why single out "A". fragillimus and not something more well known, such as good old Brachiosaurus (which i must say resembles Diagla far more). I mean, theres debate as to weather "A". fragillimus is even valid, so if you must use a diplodocid, why not Diplodocus itself, or perhaps even Apatosaurus (ignore the ridiculous notion that "Amphicoelias brontodiplodocus" represents all diplodocids from the morrison formation). Rayquaza (Japanese: レックウザ Rayquaza) is a dual-type legendary Pokémon.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

In Emerald, it served to end the conflict between Kyogre and Groudon when Team Magma's leader Maxie and Team Aqua's leader Archie awakened them.

Rayquaza is the version mascot of Emerald, appearing on the boxart.

Biology
Physiology
Rayquaza is a large, green, flying serpentine-like creature with red-tipped, rudder-like wings on its shoulders and down its body, and similarly-patterned fins on the tip of its tail. Yellow rings run across the length of Rayquaza's body and it has an additional yellow ring on top of its head. Rayquaza has two limbs with three-clawed carpals, and two long, flat, horn-like structures on its head, with two smaller horns below them. Rayquaza appears to have a prominent gumline, with only two discernible fangs on the tip of its upper snout, the other protrusions in its mouth apparently from pointed gums. It has small, yellow eyes with black pupils. Its eyes and markings resemble those of both Kyogre and Groudon.

Gender differences
Rayquaza is a genderless species.

Special abilities
It is notable for its ability to soothe the other members of the Weather trio, when angered. Rayquaza is capable of using various powerful elemental attacks that it shoots from its mouth. Rayquaza can negate the effects of the weather. Since Rayquaza is a Dragon Pokémon, it can learn Draco Meteor.

Behavior
Rayquaza constantly flies around the globe in the ozone layer, stopping and descending only to land on the peak of the Sky Pillar to rest. It is extremely territorial and will attack any intruders of its home. Due to the fact that can calm the other members of its trio, it can be seen to be considered a leader and calm.

Habitat
Rayquaza lives high in the ozone layer, but may rest on Sky Pillar, Sky Tower Summit, or in the Embedded Tower. It also, on occasion, flies the world's skies when disturbed.

Diet
Pokémon food
Rayquaza consumes water particles in the atmosphere.

In the anime
Rayquaza appears in Destiny Deoxys. This Pokémon, like most other featured legendary Pokémon, proved to be extremely powerful. It fights against Deoxys because it is seen as invading its territory. After a destructive battle over a glacier witnessed by Professor Lund, Yuko, and Lund's son Tory, and although it takes a few Psycho Boosts and is critically hit and falls into the freezing ocean, Rayquaza comes back and defeats Deoxys with a Hyper Beam attack. Four years later, Deoxys manages to regenerate, and it goes to find its friend, another Deoxys. Rayquaza senses its presence and goes to LaRousse City to battle Deoxys again. After City has been evacuated, Rayquaza manages to break through Deoxys's city-wide barrier after many failed attempts. Then, Rayquaza and Deoxys have a second spectacular battle that destroys some of the city. After Deoxys finds its friend and helps fight off the malfunctioning security bots, Rayquaza realizes that Deoxys is good and stops attacking. It (or possibly another of its species) also has a cameo in the opening to the ninth Pokémon movie and is captured by Team Rocket. Its current status is unknown, possibly flying around in the atmosphere (assuming it managed to escape from Team Rocket).

In Malice in Wonderland, a Rayquaza appeared in ownership of Cynthia, but as an illusion created by Mismagius. When Mismagius fuses with Rayquaza, it becomes the same color as the Mismagius.

A real Rayquaza appeared in its anime episode debut in outer space in Where No Togepi Has Gone Before!.

In the manga
In Pokémon Adventures
To stop the battle between Kyogre and Groudon, Wally and Norman trained at the Sky Tower and woke up Rayquaza. Five years earlier, Ruby's victory over a Salamence was the reason Norman was banned from the Gym Leader test as the wounded Salamence accidentally let Rayquaza, who was in captivity at that time, free.

In the TCG
Rayquaza (TCG)

Other appearances
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Rayquaza appears in the Subspace Emissary mode of Super Smash Bros. Brawl as a boss. After Diddy Kong lands into a mysterious island, Rayquaza lunges out of the water and snatches him, furious from being distrupted. A ship suddenly crash-lands and smashes onto the beach, and out jumps Fox McCloud, who deflects Rayquaza's Dragon Pulse back at it. Rayquaza collapses into the water, but not for long until it launches back out, engaging in battle between Fox and Diddy. Later, it is fought in the Great Maze level again and can be fought in the Boss Battles after the storyline is beaten.

Trophy Information
A Sky High Pokémon. It normally resides high up in the ozone layer where it flies endlessly, so it is rarely seen. However, when Groudon and Kyogre began to fight, it appeared to calm them down. It has the ability Air Lock, which blocks all weather-condition effects. It has exceedingly strong abilities, and its attack power is especially remarkable.
NPC appearances
* Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire: Rayquaza is the focus of the third and final Bonus Field. It can only be challenged after capturing Groudon or Kyogre and will then join the circuit of bonus fields. Rayquaza will bounce along from left to right, allowing the ball to roll under it if it is up. It will sometimes use Thunder to paralyze the ball if it is not moving fast enough, though it does stay still while it is unleashing the attack. Rayquaza will also sometimes use ExtremeSpeed to create two tornadoes that cause the ball to fly up into the air for several seconds if contact is made. Rayquaza must be hit 15 times in three minutes to win. After beating the round twice, Rayquaza will be captured.
* Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rayquaza acts as the final boss, living on the Sky Tower. Rayquaza helps save the world from a meteor. After the credits roll, the player can re-battle Rayquaza to recruit it.
* Pokémon Ranger: Rayquaza can be captured in a bonus mission after the credits.
* Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness: Rayquaza is the guardian of the Sky Melodica.
Trivia
*Rayquaza has the highest Attack stat of all Dragon and Flying Pokémon.
** Rayquaza is tied with Palkia and Dialga for highest Special Attack of all Dragon Pokémon.
**Rayquaza has the highest Special Attack of all Flying-type Pokémon
*Rayquaza is the tallest legendary Pokémon.
*Rayquaza is the only legendary Pokémon to learn an HM move by level-up in the same generation that it's an HM.
*Rayquaza is the only legendary Pokémon that can be captured at a higher level than the Elite Four's Pokémon before becoming the champion. This only happens in Emerald.
*Not counting Hidden Power and Natural Gift, Rayquaza can learn damaging attacks of fifteen of the seventeen types, tying with Togekiss and Lucario for the most, not counting Mew, Smeargle or Arceus.
**It cannot learn any damaging Psychic- or Poison moves, but can learn Rest and Toxic, while Togekiss cannot learn any damaging Ice- or Poison moves, but can learn Toxic as well.
*It is said that Rayquaza will come if Groudon and Kyogre are battling, but it didn't appear in the episodes Gaining Groudon and The Scuffle of Legends.
*Rayquaza is the only trio master that is actually a member of its own trio.
*Out of the weather trio, it is the only one with a secondary type.
*Though Rayquaza can be fought by a Pokémon character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl's Subspace Emissary, it is not fought by any Pokémon characters when it first appears.
*Rayquaza is currently the only Pokémon with its base stat total that does not share the specific stat numbers with another Pokémon: Mewtwo, Lugia, and Ho-Oh all have a 90-90-106-110-130-154 distribution in different orders, while the dragon trio all have 90-100-100-120-120-150.
*Rayquaza's Generation III sprites show the interior of its mouth as a blue colour. However, its Generation IV sprites have a red mouth interior.
Origin
Rayquaza is most likely based on the Hebrew legends of Ziz, the unconquerable primal master of the sky. Its counterparts were Behemoth and Leviathan. Rayquaza's appearance also draws inspiration from a Chinese dragon.
Name origin
Rayquaza's name is likely a combination of ray (geometry) and quasar. Although Rayquaza's Romanized name suggests its Japanese name is meant to be the same as its English name, it could be a combination of 烈 retsu, violent or furious, 空 kū, sky, and 座 za, from universe.
