Usage on Pokémon in the midst of a move with a semi-invulnerable turn
My tests indicate that Transform cannot be used on a Pokémon who is in the midst of a move with a semi-invulnerable turn like Dig, Fly, and Bounce, at least in Generation IV. However, the pages for Dig and Fly both indicate that Transform will not miss on a Pokémon using these moves. But both of those pages list this under Generation I, so the behavior may have changed in Generation IV. :It's both, I think. Maybe the person who tested it originally didn't get that Ditto's HP down as far as he thought? I no longer have a GBC Link Cable to test it with, but if either the hold item or the catch rate is changing, then they both are - since they are the same data bit. Still, from my testing in Gen I, it looks like a Ditto is much easier to catch as something with low catch rate than as something with a high catch rate. As such, I bet it does transform its hold item as well. But again, I have no way to know for sure, as I lack the ability to trade to my Gen II games. --GoldenSandslash15 (talk) 23:52, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
::I just tested it on my Red: I encountered a L26 Ditto and had it transform into a Spearow, then got it to about 30% health and threw a Great Ball at it. The ball shook once before the Ditto broke out, whereas if it had Spearow's catch rate it would have been caught with certainty. Therefore, catch rate is definitely not copied. I can't see how you would test the Gen II item theory, though, since in a trade the Ditto appears as itself and IIRC you can't have a link battle between Gen I and Gen II games. :::"if either the hold item or the catch rate is changing, then they both are - since they are the same data bit" - that's not entirely true. The held item in Gen II is saved in the Pokémon's personal data structure, and in Gen I this is set to the Pokémon's catch rate upon capture; the catch rate is stored in the species data structure. As for testing it, the point I'm trying to make is that if you catch a Ditto after it transforms into a Spearow (it would need to be a Spearow caught in Gen I and has never been in Gen II), it would be holding a Berry when traded to Gen II rather than Metal Powder; or at least, that is what I'm proposing might happen. == A normal Ditto can double-transform into a shiny Ditto in Gen II as well ==

I did the regular method by trading the shiny Gyarados to blue version and encountering a wild Ditto which I then captured after it had transformed a second time. I traded both back to crystal and, as expected, both were shiny. While running around near the Goldenrod City daycare, I encountered a wild ditto while I had another Pokemon leading my party. Out of curiosity I decided to switch with my shiny Ditto to see what would happen. Since trainer actions take precedence over attacks in most cases, the wild Ditto automatically got the first chance to attack. Attempting to have my own Ditto use transform failed, and the opponent transformed again. Assuming the trick would not work since the wild Ditto remained pink, I decided to switch again and just fight it. However when the game returned to the battle screen from the party menu, and my Ditto was being recalled, I saw that the wild Ditto was now blue like a shiny one. To be sure it had really worked, I captured it, and when I went to look in my PC it was still shiny.

Now, this was done on cartriges. I'm not currently able to duplicate this on an emulator due to the trade requirement. I've tried using vbalink, but it seems to only work with the advance games. Are there any other programs that enable trade emulation, or are the only other options save state hacking and using a cheat code to make Gyarados know transform? I'd like to provide proof of this, but considering I've never encountered a wild shiny pokemon over the course of 10 years, I'm going to say the chances of me specifically encountering a legitimate shiny Ditto are next to nil. --GARY-DOS (talk) 22:26, 8 January 2014 (UTC)
Bizarre paralysis thing
In GenI, transform copied stat changes induced by status, such as para/burn, because these were just applied when the status was given like a typical volatile stat boost. For the same reason, GenI Rest did not heal the speed drop from paralysis or the attack drop from burn. In GenII, the stat changes from para/burn are no longer applied in this way, yet I can confirm that Transform copies the paralysis speed drop, even when Ditto is not itself paralyzed! This holds even if the paralyzed opponent is forced to switch out and then back in via Whirlwind, and then Ditto comes in to transform! I find this incredibly bizarre, but there it is -- it is easy to forget just how strangely these games were coded.Ljubljana (talk) 08:02, 4 April 2016 (UTC)
Transforming after Roost/Burn Up/Double Shock
I've recently concluded testing of Roost/Burn Up/Double Shock + Transform from Gen 4 through Gen 9. It appears there has been an incorrect conflation between these type-removing moves.

Burn Up and Double Shock have identical interactions with Transform. If a dual-type target loses a type to either of these moves, Transform will copy the remaining type only. If a mono-type target loses its type to either of these moves (and thus becomes typeless), Tranform will copy Normal type.

Roost works differently. If a dual-type target loses Flying type to Roost, the target will be monotyped for the remainder of the turn but Transform will copy both of the target's original types. If a mono-type Flying target loses its type to Roost, the target will be Normal type for the remainder of the turn. However, Transform will still copy the original type. In both scenarios, Transform..."pretends" Roost wasn't used on that turn, I suppose. For example, if Moltres uses Burn Up, it will be mono-Flying. If it then uses Roost followed by Transform, Ditto will copy the mono-Flying from the beginning of that turn.

These rules are consistent whether the target's types are "natural" or gained from Protean, and regardless of which order the types are listed in. Types gained from Forest's Curse or Trick-or-Treat have no bearing as they are applied to a Pokemon differently, as can most easily be seen on the Status screen in SV battles. For example, if a Jolteon + Forest's Curse (effectively Electric/Grass) uses Double Shock, Jolteon becomes Typeless + Forest's Curse (effectively Grass) and Transform will copy Normal + Forest's Curse (effectively Normal/Grass).

I also want to clarify specifically regarding the Research banner in the "Effect" section that there have been no changes to these mechanics since Roost was introduced in Gen 4, nor since Burn Up's addition in Gen 7. Given my findings, in retrospect I don't actually understand what question is being asked about Gen 9. Um, I can think of three reasons for possible confusion. Imo the phrasing "primary type" is ambiguous, or maybe there's been a long-lasting assumption that Roost and Burn Up behaved in the same way, or even some confusion about how Ditto/Mew will show their original type in Summary but their transformed type in Status (since Gen 7, when Status was added to the battle screen). Charatara (talk) 19:32, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
:That matches our prior findings (see here). Roost just works differently, as you point out, such that Transform ignores it altogether (which might be related to the fact that it is a temporary effect that last only one turn). == Usage on Pokémon in the midst of a move with a semi-invulnerable turn ==

The research note in the Generation IV section seems to have already been answered in the Oddities section, under Origin Forme Giratina. However, the Oddities explanation was already in place when the research note was added.
Jrose11 recently posted a vidoe where he beat Pokémon Emerald with only a Ditto. In it, he described a glitch he found with transform. When he leveled up while transformed, the stats of his Ditto were replaced with his Ditto's stats (instead of the stats of the Pokémon it transformed into).

We should probably see if this happens in other generations.
To whom it may concern, I have removed the line:

A protected Pokémon is unaffected by moves of a certain class during that turn. Many protection moves protect against all damaging moves.
Mechanics
Protection fundamentally grants a turn of invulnerability from moves used directly by other Pokémon. It does not affect damage done at the end of a turn, such as poison, burn, Nightmare, Curse, seeding, binding, sandstorm, hail, Future Sight, or Doom Desire; or the countdown of Perish Song or Perish Body.

Moves that do damage through protection deal damage to Pokémon through protection. Hyper Drill, Mighty Cleave, G-Max One Blow, and G-Max Rapid Flow deal full damage through protection. All other damaging Z-Moves, Max Moves, and G-Max Moves are partially protected and deal 1/4 of their original damage. Moves that break protection, like Feint, will deal full damage and remove the effects of protection.

The Ability Unseen Fist allows all contact moves to bypass protection moves.

The Max Move Max Guard behaves differently than other protection moves. Only Feint, G-Max One Blow, and G-Max Rapid Flow will deal damage through Max Guard, but no move will remove its protection effect. Max Guard also protects the user from some other moves that regular protection does not.

In Diamond and Pearl only, due to a bug, if an attack is given perfect accuracy through the effect of a move (such as Lock-On), the weather (such as Blizzard under hail), or an Ability (like No Guard), it ignores protection with inverted accuracy. One-hit knockout moves are unaffected by this bug and will not hit through protection. This bug was fixed in Platinum.

In Generation VI, protection would not activate for moves that the user was immune to. Primarily, this meant that King's Shield and Spiky Shield's negative effects would not activate.

Unprotectable moves
The moves marked with a ✔ below are not affected by most protection moves.

Mat Block and Crafty Shield are not affected by this list. Mat Block has no exceptions aside from moves that do damage through protection, and Crafty Shield protects against all status moves except those the user uses on itself, Moves that target the user and all allies, moves that target all Pokémon, and entry hazards.

Max Guard also protects against a few moves below that other protection moves do not: Block, Flower Shield, Gear Up, Magnetic Flux, Phantom Force, Psych Up, Shadow Force, Teatime, and Transform.
|}

From Generation II to Generation V, the success rate halves each time. Since Generation VI, the success rate is modified by thirds each time (so after two successful uses, the success rate is 1/9).

In Generation IV only, the success rate will never drop below 12.5%; Generation III was intended to behave the same, but a bug causes the rate to follow an erratic sequence after the fourth successful use.

If a protection move is broken or bypassed, or an item is used on the turn after a protection move, the success rate will not be reset.

Generation II
In Generation II, the failure check is implemented by comparing a threshold value to a random number (0 to 254), and if the random number is greater than or equal to the threshold, the move fails.

The threshold starts at 255 and is halved (with the remainder discarded) once for each time a protection move has been used consecutively (so halved once if they've been used twice). As such, the chances of the move succeeding (assuming the user went first and doesn't have a substitute) are T/255, where T is the threshold.

If the threshold reaches 0, then the move will automatically fail, and no random number will be generated. This means that the first use will always succeed (the random number is capped at 254, which is less than 255), while the ninth usage will never succeed, as all eight bits of the threshold will have been shifted out from the earlier halving.

Generation III–IV
In Generations III and IV, the failure check is implemented by comparing a threshold value to a random number (0 to 65535), and if the random number is greater than the threshold, the move fails. The threshold value is taken from an explicitly defined table which starts with 65535, and subsequent values are equal to the previous value halved (with the remainder ignored). The table only has four values, meaning the success rate is meant to have a lower bound.

Two bugs affect the failure check prior to Generation IV. In Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire only, the wrong comparison is made, so protection moves also fail if the threshold value equals the random value, meaning a protection move has a 1/65536 chance (0.001%) of failing on the first use (and the chance of failing in subsequent turns is also greater); this was fixed in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. In all Generation III games, the number of protection uses is incremented with no regard for the limits of the table, resulting in erratic values being retrieved after four successful turns; in Generation IV, this was fixed to prevent the counter from incrementing beyond the table's size.

Generation V
In Generation V, the failure check is implemented by rolling a 32 bit value, and if the result is less than or equal to the threshold, it would pass. If the move is used in succession, (or with other protective moves), the success rate is halved until the 8th success. At 9+ successive turns, rather than the chance of success being halved, it only succeeds if the value rolled is <code>0x00000000</code>, making all attempts above turn 9 effectively a <math>1 / 2^{32}</math> (1/4294967295) chance of success.

Generation VI
In Generation VI, the failure check is implemented by picking a random number with a range of <code>X</code> (so that there are <code>X</code> values: 0 to <code>X-1</code>) and if the random number is 0, the move succeeds. <code>X</code> is taken from an explicitly defined table which starts with 1, and subsequent values are equal to the previous value multiplied by 3. The table only has seven values, giving the success rate a lower bound of approximately 0.1%. In general, the success rate is <math>1/3^T</math>, where <code>T</code> is the number of successful turns a protection move has been used.
