==Biology==

Gyarados is a {{wp|fish|piscine}}, draconic {{OBP|Pokémon|species}} with a long serpentine body covered in slightly overlapping scales. It is mostly blue with a yellow underbelly, and it has a row of yellow spots down each side. Its mouth is very large and gaping, bearing four pointed teeth and yellow lips. It has one pair of {{wp|barbels (anatomy)|barbel}} and a small white fin on each side of its face. The barbels are white on a female and blue on a male. It has small, red eyes, a three-pointed, dark blue crest on its head, and four white, spiky {{wp|dorsal fin}}s. Gyarados's tail fin is similar in structure to the crest on its head, except with a thin, white fin spread between the points.

The process of evolution causes a change in its brain structure that is believed to cause its violent nature. Gyarados's fangs can crush stones and its scales are harder than steel. Gyarados is feared for its fierce temper and wanton destructive tendencies since ancient times. In some regions, Gyarados is called the "deity of destruction" because of this. It appears in times of conflict and destroys the surrounding area. Its rampages have been known to last a month at a time. These rampages can occur even during a harsh storm. A Gyarados's rage won't stop completely until everything is destroyed. Some believed any human settlement is fated to be destroyed should a Gyarados appear. Gyarados lives in both {{DL|List of Pokémon by habitat|Water's-edge Pokémon|fresh and salty waters}}. Both Gyarados and its Mega form have demonstrated in the anime that it can leap huge distances both [[HS02|from the water]] and [[XY133|from the ground]], usually several times its own body length. However, Gyarados is rarely seen in the wild. The move {{m|Hyper Beam}} is often associated with Gyarados due to it being being powerful enough to instantly destroy everything it hits.

===Forms===
Gyarados can [[Mega Evolution|Mega Evolve]] into Mega Gyarados.

When it Mega Evolves, Gyarados becomes bulkier. The fins on its cheeks become longer and gain a yellow tint. Its crest is larger and black, and its barbels also gain considerable length. A large spike extends downward underneath its chin, and it now has a black underside with a red stripe around the edges. The yellow spots along its body are replaced by raised red scales, which propel Mega Gyarados through the water. Two large yellow fins with blue spines appear on its back. Most of the other fins along its back disappear, replaced by two rows of blue spikes. There are now four yellowish, spiky fins near its tail: two on its back and two on its underside.

Due the stress Mega Evolution puts on a Gyarados's body, it becomes even more ferocious than before. All other brain functions cease when Mega Evolution occurs, except for the destructive drive to burn down anything into cinders. Despite its brain having a powerful destructive instinct, it will obey a {{pkmn|Trainer}} it truly trusts. Mega Gyarados can launch at Mach Speed by using its orifices to release water from both sides. With this speed, it has enough power to split large ships in two. Mega Gyarados is tied with {{p|Hoopa}} [[List of Pokémon with form differences|Unbound]] as the [[List of Pokémon by height|tallest]] {{type|Dark}}.

Gyarados appears to be based on a sea dragon or {{wp|sea serpent}} and a {{wp|Chinese dragon}}. It is also partially based on a legend about how carp that leaped over the {{wp|Longmen (mythology)|Dragon Gate}} would become {{wp|dragon}}s. Several waterfalls and cataracts in China are believed to be the location of the Dragon Gate. This is referenced by [[Pokémon Snap]], as the player needs to get a Magikarp into a waterfall to evolve it into Gyarados. This legend is an allegory of the drive and efforts needed to overcome obstacles, which can be tied to the fact that Gyarados' pre-evolved form, Magikarp, could possibly take a lot of drive and effort to legitimately evolve into Gyarados.

It may be partially based on the ''{{wp|kraken}}'', as both are destructive sea monsters that are infamous for terrorizing humans. To add to this, Gyarados's original name was supposed to be "Skullkraken". Gyarados's {{t|Flying}} type may be a reference to ''{{wp|koinobori}}'', a carp-shaped {{wp|windsock}} traditionally flown to celebrate {{wp|Children's Day (Japan)|Children's Day}} in Japan, formerly called ''Tango no Sekku'' (端午の節句). It could also be inspired by the South African cryptid {{wp|Inkanyamba}}, a giant, winged eel that causes storms when angry, a trait Gyarados is famous for.

Mega Gyarados' appearance bears similarities to the aforementioned ''koinobori''. Furthermore, its design, specifically its large dorsal fins, strongly resembles that of the unnamed "legendary water Pokémon" seen in the [[Pokémon anime]] episode ''[[EP244|Enlighten Up!]]'', first aired on April 18, 2002. This creature may have inspired the design of Mega Gyarados when it was eventually created 10 years later.

On December 2018, the Beta Sprite for Gyarados was showcased on the NHK Broadcast in Japan bearing the resemblance of a worm-like body with a mouthful of sharp teeth, barbels on the top of its head, and multiple fins on the side of its body. The inspiration for this original design may be related to the myth of 鯰 ''{{wp|Namazu}}'' or 大鯰 Ōnamazu from 16th century Japan. Namazu was known as a catfish that was said to destroy cities with earthquakes and show up during times of human conflict - much like Gyarados’ Pokedex entries in the original first 2 generations of games. Namazu’s history as a mythos is also directly tied to ''{{wp|Lake Biwa}}'' - the real life version of the Lake of Rage - where said earthquakes were said to occur. This idea was later replaced with the Dragon Gate myth and rehashed in Gen 3 as the inspiration for {{p|Whiscash}} appropriately named ナマズン "Namazun".

Gyarados is a {{wp|fish|piscine}}, draconic {{OBP|Pokémon|species}} with a long serpentine body covered in slightly overlapping scales. It is mostly blue with a yellow underbelly, and it has a row of yellow spots down each side. Its mouth is very large and gaping, bearing four pointed teeth and yellow lips. It has one pair of {{wp|barbels (anatomy)|barbel}} and a small white fin on each side of its face. The barbels are white on a female and blue on a male. It has small, red eyes, a three-pointed, dark blue crest on its head, and four white, spiky {{wp|dorsal fin}}s. Gyarados's tail fin is similar in structure to the crest on its head, except with a thin, white fin spread between the points.

The process of evolution causes a change in its brain structure that is believed to cause its violent nature. Gyarados's fangs can crush stones and its scales are harder than steel. Gyarados is feared for its fierce temper and wanton destructive tendencies since ancient times. In some regions, Gyarados is called the "deity of destruction" because of this. It appears in times of conflict and destroys the surrounding area. Its rampages have been known to last a month at a time. These rampages can occur even during a harsh storm. A Gyarados's rage won't stop completely until everything is destroyed. Some believed any human settlement is fated to be destroyed should a Gyarados appear. Gyarados lives in both {{DL|List of Pokémon by habitat|Water's-edge Pokémon|fresh and salty waters}}. Both Gyarados and its Mega form have demonstrated in the anime that it can leap huge distances both [[HS02|from the water]] and [[XY133|from the ground]], usually several times its own body length. However, Gyarados is rarely seen in the wild. The move {{m|Hyper Beam}} is often associated with Gyarados due to it being being powerful enough to instantly destroy everything it hits.

Gyarados can [[Mega Evolution|Mega Evolve]] into Mega Gyarados.

When it Mega Evolves, Gyarados becomes bulkier. The fins on its cheeks become longer and gain a yellow tint. Its crest is larger and black, and its barbels also gain considerable length. A large spike extends downward underneath its chin, and it now has a black underside with a red stripe around the edges. The yellow spots along its body are replaced by raised red scales, which propel Mega Gyarados through the water. Two large yellow fins with blue spines appear on its back. Most of the other fins along its back disappear, replaced by two rows of blue spikes. There are now four yellowish, spiky fins near its tail: two on its back and two on its underside.

Due the stress Mega Evolution puts on a Gyarados's body, it becomes even more ferocious than before. All other brain functions cease when Mega Evolution occurs, except for the destructive drive to burn down anything into cinders. Despite its brain having a powerful destructive instinct, it will obey a {{pkmn|Trainer}} it truly trusts. Mega Gyarados can launch at Mach Speed by using its orifices to release water from both sides. With this speed, it has enough power to split large ships in two. Gyarados appears to be based on a sea dragon or {{wp|sea serpent}} and a {{wp|Chinese dragon}}. It is also partially based on a legend about how carp that leaped over the {{wp|Longmen (mythology)|Dragon Gate}} would become {{wp|dragon}}s. Several waterfalls and cataracts in China are believed to be the location of the Dragon Gate. This is referenced by [[Pokémon Snap]], as the player needs to get a Magikarp into a waterfall to evolve it into Gyarados. This legend is an allegory of the drive and efforts needed to overcome obstacles, which can be tied to the fact that Gyarados' pre-evolved form, Magikarp, could possibly take a lot of drive and effort to legitimately evolve into Gyarados.

It may be partially based on the ''{{wp|kraken}}'', as both are destructive sea monsters that are infamous for terrorizing humans. To add to this, Gyarados's original name was supposed to be "Skullkraken". Gyarados's {{t|Flying}} type may be a reference to ''{{wp|koinobori}}'', a carp-shaped {{wp|windsock}} traditionally flown to celebrate {{wp|Children's Day (Japan)|Children's Day}} in Japan, formerly called ''Tango no Sekku'' (端午の節句). It could also be inspired by the South African cryptid {{wp|Inkanyamba}}, a giant, winged eel that causes storms when angry, a trait Gyarados is famous for.

Mega Gyarados' appearance bears similarities to the aforementioned ''koinobori''. Furthermore, its design, specifically its large dorsal fins, strongly resembles that of the unnamed "legendary water Pokémon" seen in the [[Pokémon anime]] episode ''[[EP244|Enlighten Up!]]'', first aired on April 18, 2002. This creature may have inspired the design of Mega Gyarados when it was eventually created 10 years later.

On December 2018, the Beta Sprite for Gyarados was showcased on the NHK Broadcast in Japan bearing the resemblance of a worm-like body with a mouthful of sharp teeth, barbels on the top of its head, and multiple fins on the side of its body. The inspiration for this original design may be related to the myth of 鯰 ''{{wp|Namazu}}'' or 大鯰 Ōnamazu from 16th century Japan. Namazu was known as a catfish that was said to destroy cities with earthquakes and show up during times of human conflict - much like Gyarados’ Pokedex entries in the original first 2 generations of games. Namazu’s history as a mythos is also directly tied to ''{{wp|Lake Biwa}}'' - the real life version of the Lake of Rage - where said earthquakes were said to occur. This idea was later replaced with the Dragon Gate myth and rehashed in Gen 3 as the inspiration for {{p|Whiscash}} appropriately named ナマズン "Namazun".

"'''Two Perfect Girls'''" is a song from the English dub of the Pokémon anime. It is one of the five songs featured in [[Pokémon Karaokémon]] in [[S03|The Johto Journeys]]. It is sung by {{an|Brock}}'s voice actor, [[Eric Stuart]], and it is a love song about [[Officer Jenny]] and [[Nurse Joy]]. {{game|Gold and Silver|s}}, released in 1999 in Japan and 2000 elsewhere, were in development for a long time beforehand. Several aspects from their prototype versions were released to the public during their development, many including aspects that did not make it to the final games.

==First mention of Pocket Monsters 2==

In 1997, Nintendo announced the first details of the next generation of Pocket Monsters games, to be titled '''Pocket Monsters 2: Gold and Silver'''. The games were intended to be released at the end of the year for both Game Boy and Super Game Boy.

One of the many additions promised, notably, was a skateboard that could be used in addition to the [[Bicycle]] of the previous games and would allow users to travel to "unusual places". Though this never made the final cut, other things announced, such as the [[time|real-time clock]], {{cat|Generation II Pokémon|100 new Pokémon}}, including [[List of Pokémon with cross-generational evolutions|new evolutions of old Pokémon]], new [[TM]]s and [[HM]]s containing new [[move]]s were included. The trading and communication abilities of the games were also to be improved, and [[Time Capsule|backward compatibility]] with the Generation I games was also announced.

===New Pokémon in the anime===
The {{pkmn|anime}} also provided early looks at the new Pokémon. {{p|Ho-Oh}}, the eventual [[version mascot]] of Pokémon Gold, had already appeared in the [[EP001|first episode]] as an unidentified creature. Later, {{TP|Misty|Togepi}} hatched from an egg {{Ash}} himself found, and Misty became the first main character to own a Generation II Pokémon. {{p|Snubbull}} and {{p|Marill}} made their first appearances in ''[[PK01|Pikachu's Vacation]]'', and {{p|Donphan}} appeared at the start of ''[[Mewtwo Strikes Back]]''. During [[Pokémon: The Adventures in the Orange Islands|the second season]], Ash and Misty also encountered {{Tracey}}, who owned a {{TP|Tracey|Marill}}, and the focus of [[The Power of One|the second movie]] was {{OBP|Lugia|movie 2}}, the version mascot of Pokémon Silver. {{p|Bellossom}}, {{p|Ledyba}}, {{p|Hoothoot}}, and {{p|Elekid}} also made an appearance in ''[[PK04|Pikachu's Rescue Adventure]]''.

The color scheme in these screenshots was not as varied as the one provided by the Game Boy Color; this town was also ultimately either changed into [[Violet City]] (perhaps with [[Sprout Tower]] at right) or removed altogether.

This screenshot displays an area which made it into the game's final cut with little alteration. It depicts a simplified version of [[Route 35]] and the [[National Park]]'s southern entrance, except with water instead of trees and fences and no open path to the right.

At this time, the early game screenshots released generally didn't look all that much different from Generation I. The pictures clearly show the games' engine being in a more developed but still early stage. The lack of battle images would seem to indicate that a redone battle system had not been implemented yet.

==Pokémon Gold and Silver Versions announced==

The end of 1997 passed without a release for Pocket Monsters 2. The potential release date was removed, and things generally stayed quiet until early 1998.

It was at this time that Pocket Monsters 2 was re-announced as Pokémon Gold and Silver. Though the "2" was dropped, the games remained essentially a sequel to Generation I. Much of the year was quiet with regard to information about the games, as {{game|Yellow}} was on its way out in Japan, and {{game|Red and Blue|s}} and the [[Pokémon anime]] were on their way to the United States.

==New information emerges==

Following nearly a year without press releases, the Nintendo site was finally updated with new information on Pokémon Gold and Silver. A revised release date of June, 1999 was given and it was announced the games would be compatible with the then soon-to-be-released [[Game Boy Color]].

[[Ken Sugimori]]'s artwork for {{p|Slowking}}, {{p|Marill}}, {{p|Bellossom}}, and {{p|Hoothoot}} was also released, as were several screens of the new battle system featuring full-color sprites.

The battle screens are very similar to the final ones; however, the absence of [[gender]] notation is apparent. Pokémon gender was a previously announced feature, and the display of gender during battle was likely added later as a convenience to players.

The attack stats window, which in the final version tells players the remaining and total PP of each move, as well as its type, was apparently not fully completed at this point in development.

The battle system, nearly complete, was demonstrated, including wild Pokémon encounters. The new [[Pokédex]], while close to completion, was still missing several features, such as the [[footprint]] and [[National Pokédex]] number of the Pokémon. The "location", "[[cry]]", and "print" functions were also missing.

On-field images of game looking closer to the final. The locations don't seem to be that of the final map, though are close. The colors seem more washed out than they do in the final version, though this may be due to the fact that they are pictures ''of'' a Game Boy Color screen.

==After the release==

Since Pokémon Gold and Silver were released, other things have been uncovered that reveal interesting details about the games' development. The final games have a large number of incomplete maps that detail what most Johto towns looked like during development. One of the most complete prototype maps found in the ROM is a rough version of the [[Kanto Safari Zone|Safari Zone]]. [[Image:Betarage.png|thumb|left|A prototype [[Lake of Rage]]?]] Although no wild Pokémon appear inside, it has several of its attributes defined, such as music, and connections to Fuchsia City, which other prototype maps do not have. The Safari Zone also appears in the internal list of PokéGear map locations, along with [[Viridian Forest]], [[Cerulean Cave]], and {{ka|Pokémon Mansion}}. Another complete map is a house in Olivine City, where a woman refers to a pharmacy in [[Ecruteak City]] instead of [[Cianwood City]]. It is unknown if this is a typo made by the game designers or if this means the Cianwood Pharmacy was originally meant to appear in Ecruteak.

Full maps (minus events) exist for the [[Cinnabar Island]] Lab, indicating [[Cinnabar Island]] was originally to make an appearance without the erupted volcano, or at least that the lab was going to remain.
Apart from maps, other prototype discoveries include a mine cart image in the cave tileset, and a second card-flipping Game Corner game. There is also an unused event script, complete with text, which would allow a different event for a level 40 {{p|Entei}}, analogous to the birds in [[Generation I]].

[[Unreleased Pokémon|Images]] have also since been found of various early ideas for the new Pokémon, including early prototypes of {{p|Qwilfish}}, {{p|Chikorita}}, and {{p|Marill}}.

In addition, the games include large amounts of unreferenced text. For example, one block of text references the fact that [[Honey|Sweet Honey]], which made its debut in [[Generation IV]], was planned as early as [[Generation II]].

Code and text remain for yet another forgotten feature, the ability to name the player's mother. Space is reserved in RAM for two other names as well, which default to RED and GREEN — the player character and rival from Red and Blue.

The {{type2|Bird}} from [[Generation I]] remains in [[Generation II]]. This is presumed to be a carry-over from the Generation I game engine, as Gold and Silver are based on it. Also returning from leftover [[Generation I]] code are [[Town Map]] and [[Poké Flute]] items. Both are named "Teru-Sama" and are unusable, but if hacked to have a use option, the Poké Flute will still function, and the Town Map will attempt to, but fail, as the data it would access is now in a different location.

There is unused battle data for {{ga|Cal}}, the default opponent in the [[Trainer House]]. There are two parties - one with the basic forms of the Johto starters and one with the middle forms of the Johto starters. As [[Viridian City]] and therefore Trainer House cannot be legally accessed until late in the game, it is unknown what purpose these parties would have served.

Another beta remnant is an unused sprite. This sprite is that of the player, only not carrying his pack. This sprite may have been originally intended to be used by the {{ga|Cal}} event, but was later left in favor of the player's own sprite. This sprite is fully inserted in the game, containing all data of a normal overworld sprite, except it is not used by any known event in the game.

On their quest to capture {{p|Articuno}} on film, [[Todd]] and our heroes run into a frozen {{p|Jigglypuff}}! Ash uses his {{AP|Cyndaquil}} to defrost the melodious Pokémon. When Todd asks Jigglypuff if it has seen Articuno, Jigglypuff nods towards Snow Top Mountain. Undeterred by the incredible height and icy conditions, the gang heads up the mountain where they run into a PokéCenter. Both [[Officer Jenny]] and [[Nurse Joy]] explain the legend of Articuno; Centuries ago, a group of travelers were lost on the mountain. Certain they would perish, they almost gave up hope but an Articuno appeared and guided the group to safety. As a tribute, they created a statue of Articuno that still stands today. Some say that anyone traversing Snow Top Mountain is protected by Articuno.

After hearing the story, Todd is convinced there are Articuno on the mountain and continues his vertical journey. With Ash and Co. in tow, a blizzard kicks up and temporarily blinds the group. Brock and Misty want to stay put and let the blizzard pass, but Todd and Ash are determined to continue. Little do they know, directly ahead of them is a cliff edge and a deadly drop.
