==In the anime==
Lara and her family own the Laramie Ranch, an area just outside of the [[Kanto Safari Zone]]. Lara, with her {{p|Ponyta}} and {{p|Growlithe}}, helps guard the ranch from Pokémon poachers.

Lara was going to enter a race with her Ponyta when {{TRT}}, working for [[Dario]], caused an accident that led to her breaking her arm. Lara was saddened, but quickly realized that {{Ash}} could ride her Ponyta in the race.

Ash and Ponyta entered the race, and they were able to successfully defeat Dario, and all the other Trainers, and win the race. In the process, Lara's Ponyta evolved into a {{p|Rapidash}}.

It later appeared when a herd of Tauros got out of control. Lara tried to stop them but fell off Ponyta, breaking her arm. Back at the ranch, Lara could not enter the race because of her injury, so Ash decided he would step in for Lara. She agreed to let Ash use Ponyta.

During the race the following day, {{TRT}} tried to rig it so that [[Dario]] would win. However, with the help of {{an|Misty}} and her {{TP|Misty|Starmie}}, Team Rocket was distracted and Ash was able to catch up to Dario and his {{p|Dodrio}}.

Dario tried to slow Ponyta down with a {{m|Peck}}, but suddenly Ponyta [[Evolution|evolved]] into a {{p|Rapidash}} and won the race.

In the chapter ''[[ET05|The Human Race and the Pokémon Race]]'', she was injured by her Ponyta, which was spooked by [[Dario]]. Outraged at Dario's trickery, {{Ash}} offers to ride Ponyta in the [[Fuchsia Free-For-All Race]] in Lara's place.

During the race, Ponyta evolves into {{p|Rapidash}} under Ash's care.

In the episode, Anthony was {{pkmn|training}} his {{p|Hitmonchan}} to compete in the [[P1 Grand Prix]]. He was so determined to train and win, that he was neglecting his family. His daughter, {{OBP|Rebecca|EP029}}, convinced {{Ash}} and {{an|Brock}} to compete in the P1 Grand Prix to defeat him.

Ash entered using his {{AP|Primeape}}. Anthony noticed early on that the ape Pokémon was very strong. Anthony ended up losing in the semi-finals to {{TRT}} and the {{p|Hitmonlee}} they had stolen from [[Giant]], another competitor. Eventually, Ash defeated Hitmonlee in the finals and won the P1 Grand Prix. Anthony offered to train Primeape for Ash, and Ash agreed. Neither Anthony nor Primeape have been seen since that episode.

==In the anime==
Melanie was the [[character of the day]] in ''[[EP010|Bulbasaur and the Hidden Village]]''. In this episode, {{Ash}}, {{an|Misty}}, and {{an|Brock}} were on their way to [[Vermilion City]] when Misty saw an {{p|Oddish}}. Misty tried to catch it when a {{AP|Bulbasaur}} stopped her with a {{m|Vine Whip}}. Ash tried to catch the Bulbasaur, but the two {{2t|Grass|Poison}} Pokémon escaped.

Ash and {{ashfr}} tried to keep on traveling, but got caught in a series of traps, including a collapsing bridge, a pit, and a net. Brock fell into the river, but was saved by a beautiful girl named Melanie. She cared for Pokémon who have been abandoned in the forest. Melanie set the traps to try to deter people from catching the Pokémon she cared for.

Melanie allowed Ash and his friends to visit her Hidden Village of Pokémon if they promised not to catch any. Melanie explained that Bulbasaur had sworn to protect the other sick Pokémon. Bulbasaur continued to distrust Ash and Misty. {{TRT}} attacked the village and tried to steal all the Pokémon, but Bulbasaur and Ash were able to defeat them.

Melanie insisted that Ash take Bulbasaur with him, since Bulbasaur wasn't able to grow any in the forest. Melanie thought that the Pokémon were getting too lazy with Bulbasaur to take care of them and they needed to be reintroduced into the wild. According to her, Bulbasaur would agree if Ash battled him; after winning that battle, Ash caught Bulbasaur, and everyone parted ways.

Melanie also makes an appearance in [[The Electric Tale of Pikachu]] {{pkmn|manga}}. [[A.J.]] and [[Samurai]] wanted to take {{OBP|Ash Ketchum|EToP|Ash}} and {{an|Brock}} to find her Hidden Village. According to rumor, it was a garden protected by a goddess and funded by some rich philanthropists.

On the way, Ash accidentally left {{AP|Pikachu}} behind when the little mouse got distracted by an abandoned {{p|Squirtle}} and {{p|Charmander}}. Squirtle wanted to take the two other supposedly abandoned Pokémon to the Hidden Village, which was a paradise according to legends amongst Pokémon.

Pikachu, Charmander, and Squirtle arrived at the Hidden Village after a long journey. Along the way they had joined up with a {{p|Kangaskhan}} and {{OBP|Tommy|EP034}}. They also brought along [[Jessie]], [[James]], and {{MTR}} - who had convinced the group of Pokémon that they wanted to live in a quiet mountain village.

Melanie was viewed as a goddess to the Pokémon. She welcomed everyone to the Hidden Village, where Pokémon were allowed to heal physical and spiritual wounds in peace.

Team Rocket started to catch all the wild Pokémon, but Pikachu and Kangaskhan teamed up and blasted the thieves off with a {{m|Thunder Shock}} and {{m|Mega Kick}} combo.

In the end, Charmander was reunited with [[Damian]], and Squirtle stayed behind with Melanie.

Misty angrily challenged Giselle to a {{pkmn|battle}}, to which the latter agreed to. Giselle defeated [[Misty's Starmie]] with a {{p|Graveler}}, despite the type disadvantage. After taunting the young [[Gym Leader]], Giselle then started to lecture her fellow students.

Now {{Ash}} got angry and argued that [[Pokémon training]] was more than types and levels - one needs to be friends with them, too. Giselle laughed haughtily and called Ash a beginner. She teased him about having been on a journey for two months and only having two [[Badge]]s and three {{OBP|Pokémon|species}}. She then proceeded to note that Pikachu are an awful choice for a [[starter Pokémon]], and that they're more fitting as pets for little girls. Ash and {{AP|Pikachu}} were extremely insulted and angered, and challenged Giselle to a battle.

Giselle used a {{p|Cubone}}. Without being able to use {{type|Electric}} moves, Ash told Pikachu to fight back in any way it could. Pikachu then began to attack Cubone with a series of random physical attacks such as biting and scratching. Eventually, Pikachu covered Cubone's eyes with its own skull helmet and Cubone ended up knocking itself out with its own {{m|Bonemerang}} attack. Giselle was shocked by the defeat and admitted that people can't learn through books alone.

{{TRT}} then tried to raid the school, but Giselle led the charge against them and got all the students to assist in chasing the criminals away. Joe and Giselle reconciled, and Joe left the school to collect Badges for the [[Pokémon League]].

Ash thought he was being bullied, so he chased the older children away. Joe explained that he was a student at [[Pokémon Tech]], a school that teaches students how to [[Pokémon training|train]] {{OBP|Pokémon|species}}. He is on the bottom of the beginner class and the other kids were tutoring him before Ash showed up. Apparently, Joe actually knew everything about Pidgey and its evolutions, but he was pretending to be ignorant so he would not have to work harder. Ash demanded to know who was responsible for the "tutoring" program, and Joe showed him a picture of a pretty young girl named [[Giselle]]. It seemed that Joe had a crush on her, despite her harsh treatment.

Joe took Ash and his friends to the campus and showed them around. He explained that graduates of the school are allowed to compete in the [[Pokémon League]] without having to challenge [[Gym Leader]]s or collect [[Badge]]s. As a beginner, Joe had the skills of someone with about two Badges. He felt obligated to remain at Pokémon Tech because his parents paid so much to get him in. Joe then demonstrated some of the tools the school offered, such as a {{pkmn|battle}} simulator that appeared to resemble the {{pkmn|games}}. {{an|Misty}} was annoyed by this, thinking that the simulation could not make up for the real thing, and proved this by defeating Joe in a battle, with Joe using his Weepinbell and Misty using her {{TP|Misty|Starmie}}, despite the {{type|Water}} disadvantage on her part versus a {{type|Grass}}.

Ash, eager to challenge this Trainer, went to A.J.'s Gym and saw a sign above it announcing that A.J. had been undefeated through 98 matches. A.J. returned to the Gym after catching some wild Pokémon. Ash then challenged him to battle number 99.

Ash began to say how he thought low about a person with 98 victories but without a Gym Badge. A.J. responded with saying that he wasn't planning on challenging a Gym Leader until he had 100 wins in a row. Ash bragged about the two Badges he had at the time just with ten victories, and A.J. insulted him and said he must have gotten them from weak Gym Leaders, which angered both Brock and Misty. A.J. defeated Ash with his {{p|Sandshrew}} without much effort, causing Ash to complain and accuse A.J. of cheating.

As the group was about to leave, they looked inside the Gym, and they saw A.J. using a whip to send his Sandshrew diving into a pool. Ash attacked A.J., thinking that he was torturing his Pokémon. A.J. then explained that he was strengthening his Sandshrew's resistance against water. Sandshrew and all of A.J.'s other Pokémon were wearing {{DL|EV-enhancing item|Macho Brace}}s to intensify their strength. He also had all of his Pokémon exercise in rigorous routines. Ash complained about A.J. treating his Pokémon too harshly, and asked Brock and Misty to back him up. However, instead Brock complimented A.J. on the specialized {{Pkmn|food}} he prepares for his Pokémon.

[[Jessie]], [[James]], and {{MTR}} then tried to steal [[Ash's Pikachu]], but ended up accidentally taking Sandshrew instead. Not knowing what had happened, Ash guessed that Sandshrew had run away, and offered A.J.'s other Pokémon spots on his [[party|team]], but they ignored him. Sandshrew escaped from {{TRT}} by using {{m|Dig}}, accidentally bringing Meowth along with him. After A.J.'s Sandshrew came back, he challenged Team Rocket to a battle, and his Sandshrew defeated Team Rocket, winning A.J. the final victory needed to set off and collect Gym Badges.

After A.J. and Sandshrew had been happily reunited, Ash realized that A.J. cared deeply for his Pokémon, despite being tough on them during training.

A.J. made another appearance in a flashback sequence of the [[S02|Orange Islands]] opening song {{so|Pokémon World}}. He and his Sandshrew appear with a group of other {{pkmn|Trainer}}s Ash encountered during his [[S01|first trip]] through [[Kanto]].

Ellen is {{OBP|Mary|EP139}}'s mother. She lives with her on a {{p|Mareep}} ranch in a valley between [[Violet City]] and [[Azalea Town]]. When {{Ash}}, {{an|Misty}}, and {{an|Brock}} came to visit, they were preparing for the annual [[Mareep Festival]].

She originally seemed quite strict, scolding her daughter for letting the Mareep escape, and scaring [[Ash's Pikachu]]. She would not let Mary compete in the festival, saying she was too young to enter. However, after seeing Mary's battle abilities and strategies against {{TRT}}, she changed her mind. The next morning, she presented her daughter with her old [[Poké Ball]], and gave her permission to compete.
