Beat Up is a Pokémon Trading Card Game deck archetype based around Neo Genesis. It was popular due to its potential to inflict massive damage for little energy, but was shunned by some players because it relied on successful coin flips.

History
The Beat Up archetype has been around since soon after the Neo Genesis set was released. Many players recognized Neo Genesis as a game-changing Pokémon almost instantly after its release. However, some did not believe it would succeed because it was only useful as a beatstick, and even then it relied too much on coin flips to be consistantly useful. The former would prove to prevail, as Beat Up dominated the Pokémon Organized Play scene for quite some time. Just as it seemed as though all other archetypes had become obsolete, Wizards of the Coast did something unimaginable at the time; they banned Neo Genesis from use. This crippled the deck, as Neo Genesis was the key card. Many players were outraged, some were relieved. The deck faded instantaniously. However, a somewhat less dominating version of the archetype arose in 2003 with the release of EX Ruby & Sapphire in EX Ruby & Sapphire. For that archetype, see Beat Up (R & S).

Strategy
The main strategy of the deck is to get Neo Genesis onto the field as the active Pokémon as soon as possible with two Darkness Energies attached to it. A Neo Genesis on the bench is ideal, because it prevents the player's opponent from playing Trainer Cards to switch out or heal their active Pokémon. That way, Neo Genesis can just attack until the opposing Pokémon is K.O.ed. Neo Genesis is used for hand refreshing and drawing support to meet the deck's other requirements as soon as possible (i.e. Neo Genesis and Neo Genesis). Once the player has their Neo Genesis powered up, they should pile as many Pokémon onto the bench as possible, so as to have Beat Up doing maximum damage. Any trainer cards used should be aimed towards this objective.

Cards
Key Cards
*Neo Genesis is the deck's main attacker, with Beat Up doing an average of 10 damage for each Pokémon in play, plus an additional 10 damage for each Darkness Energy and/or Base Set.
*Neo Genesis prevents the opponent from playing Trainer Cards like Base Set to get their Pokémon safe from Neo Genesis. It also slows down an opponent's drawing speed and reduces their chances to win as a whole.
*Neo Genesis backs up Neo Genesis with drawing support and hand refreshing. It maximizes a player's chance of drawing a Neo Genesis and as many Darkness Energies as possible.

Other Pokémon
*Neo Revelation is useful to the deck in that its Call For Family attack allows the user to search their deck for another Murkrow and put it onto their bench, thus increasing the damage of the eventual Beat Up.
*Neo Genesis is pathetic by itself and is only useful to evolve into Neo Genesis.

Other Trainers
*Base Set is to provide extra card drawing.
*Base Set refreshes a player's hand.
*Base Set searches the player's deck for any card and adds it to their hand. Quite useful, for obvious reasons.
*Base Set roots out any Trainer Card from the discard pile and adds it to the player's hand. This speeds up the deck and makes the card useful in many situations because of its versatility.
*Base Set gets Neo Genesis or another Pokémon to the safety of the bench if it is close to being knocked out.
*Neo Genesis can give Neo Genesis the extra turn it needs to score a knockout.
*Neo Genesis recycles used Darkness Energies back into the deck, because Beat Up can't be used if all the Darkness Energies are in the discard pile, and there are only four in the deck.
*Base Set allows a player to control their opponent's field to some extent, giving them the power to choose their opponent's active Pokémon.
*Neo Genesis is like Neo Genesis, but with only one-time useage and less consistancy.
*Base Set can be used in a pinch in place of Neo Genesis to shut down the opponent's options.

Energy Cards
*Darkness Energy is needed for Neo Genesis's attack, and as an added bonus, it adds 10 damage per card onto Beat Up.
*Psychic Energy can be attached to Neo Genesis if absolutely necessary.
*Full Heal Energy removes status conditions from Neo Genesis to ensure it has a successful attack and does not faint from poison or burn.
:Theoretically, we could, but when it comes to main expansions we tend to wait until the English release. There are a lot of other things to do in the meantime, too. <font style="color:#1874CD;">Cipher</font> (Talk) 10:44, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

::Granted, if the Pokémon-SP don't get English translations, then we'd probably have to create a bunch of card articles based on the Japanese set. (I'd say there's a pretty good chance that Pokémon-SP will remain Japan only, since Pokémon-SP is basically a reincarnation of the VS style, and that style saw only two cards in total released in English, both of them promos on each side of the Pacific, and even then only one of those two wouldn't be a Basic Pokémon in traditional style. Given how the English sets are released with competitive play in mind and Pokémon-SP depict fully evolved Pokémon as basic cards with high HP and quite broken attacks for basic cards, just like most VS-style cards, I personally think we're not going to see Pokémon-SP stateside since they'd give an unfair advantage in battles.)

::Odds are that, if Pokémon-SP does not make it to English release, English DP8 might end up being a combination of Galactic's Conquest, this set, and the Entry Pack DPt with all Pokémon-SP and related cards removed, with possibly a few promos thrown in; Japanese DP9 would then likely subsequently drop the Pokémon-SP mechanic due to its treatment stateside, and coincidentially realign the DP set numbering. Now, I'm not saying anything's 100% confirmed, but I'm playing the odds here with what I said. --Shiningpikablu252 16:37, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

:::SP Pokémon take up too important a role in both DPt sets thus far. If they weren't released in English, there'd be uproar, especially with the Japanese sets getting so much attention in the US and here in the UK thanks to the likes of PokéBeach. I can guarantee you that all SP Pokémon in both Galactic's Conquest and Bonds to the End of Time will be released in English.

:::My theory is much simpler than yours. Our DP8 will be Galactic's Conquest, our DP9 will be this set, and the Entry Pack DPt cards will be thrown into one or the other (most likely GC). Japanese DPt3 will have been in the works for a very long time, so I see no reason why PCL would decide to drop SP Pokémon after just two sets. In my opinion, as a player for around eight years now, it's a good mechanic, and will stir up the metagame very nicely. So, no, SP Pokémon aren't gonna be dropped any time soon - in Japanese or' in English. :::Also, having gone up against monsters like Magkiss and G&G far too many a time, believe me, SP Pokémon are not broken. If anything, they fit right in.
