Do we need...?
First, do we really need the Pokémon list for each member? And the Japanese name? (Except for the Isshu ones for now, of course.) It's information that's better suited for each character's individual page (and of course it's already there), and it just seems to serve as a way to make the tables bigger so they don't look too thin on the page. I suggest we just drop both of those and leave only sprite,( English) name, and specialty type, and make the tables horizontal (sort of like the templates we already use, but with the type).
Less trivially, should we include the Champions here? ::I agree with both Memo and Ataro, I think that we should drop the Pokemon Lists (sprites) for each member, as they are just taking up space. However, I think that we should leave the Japanese names there. The games originate in Japan, so having their Japanese (original) names there is important. Also I think that we should include the Champions here, as they need to be battled to defeat the game, and are therefore, honorary members of the Elite Four (and sometimes former members of the Elite Four). So in closing, I think that we should include their Sprite, Japanese Name, English Name, and Specialty Type. --<span style="color:blue">JediKnight</span><span style="color:green">DTV</span> 00:12, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
Dark- Karen (fourth) and Sidney (first) 4+1=5
Psychic- Will (first) and Lucian (fourth) 1+4=5
Fighting- Bruno (second) and Bruno again (third) 2+3=5
All of them sum up to 5. Fifth generation.
Ditto isn't the only Pokemon that only learns one move, the same is true of Unown. DrStubbsberg
Until Platinum, it was also true of Beldum. Smeargle also only learns one move, though it learns it up to 10 times. Wikifixer 04:00, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

Ditto can (or at least could) permanently learn other moves
I had to create an account just to point this out as I was very surprised not to already see it in the article. I remember doing this with my friends back with gold/silver (don't know if it works in further generations). Ditto can permanently learn ANY move. When I used my ditto on pokemon stadium, it listed his moves as red, indicating that ditto shouldn't have those moves and that it's an exploit, but I wouldn't think that would stop it from being noted. Here's how, in case you pokenuts don't already know (which you probably do):

Take a smeargle. Put it up against a pokemon with the move you want ditto to learn. Use sketch on the move so smeargle permanently learns it. Level smeargle enough so he learns sketch again. Make sure sketch is not in the first slot, because otherwise ditto will lose the ability to transform. (doens't stop the trick from working, just stops you from doing it again). Link up your cartidge with the smeargle on it (and in your party) to the cart with the ditto on it. This "records" the trainer's smeargle on the "ditto cart", so that the ditto can battle the smeargle. Make them battle. Have ditto use transform. When smeargle uses the move you want ditto to learn, use the copied sketch. Poof. Ditto permanently retains whatever move you want.

I had a ditto with horn drill, fissure, guillotine, and lock-on, which always came as a shock to opponents. (though not much of a challenge as he's so weak). The Transform Paradox: I changed the title because this example is not actually a paradox. A paradox is an extended contradiction, this is not. Manowargodsofwar
:True, yes, however, a paradox is also an infinite time loop that self-contradicts. The contradiction here comes in the never-lowering PP of Transform for both Pokémon, remaining locked at 5. <span style="color:#FF0000">TTE</span>chidna 19:29, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
There is no contradiction in this at all. Both using Transform is nothing more than a deadlock. An infinite time loop the self-contradicts would be going back in time to kill your grandfather and succeeding. Manowargodsofwar
:I have a question, does this only apply with two ditto, because mew can transform and can learn other moves. Because it seems to me that only Transform the move is copied, but I thought transform copies all the other Pokemon's moves, so wouldn't a match up between a mew and a ditto (as long as Mew has other moves) be an exception? --Dman dustin 09:46, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
::It works if Mew Transforms into something with only Transform. Say you have a Mew with Transform and Psychic. Psychic has 10 PP. You're facing the exact same Mew. You use Transform. What the F...lareon happened to the glitch to get a shiny ditto in G/S using R/B, if no one knows what I'm talking about here's how (altough it's old and I think you all know):

1 Capture the shiny Gyarados in G/S and ransfer it to R/B
2 Teach Gyarados Mimic and erase all his other moves
3 Battle a wild Ditto with the Gyarados, mimic him and transform a few turns while it transforms
4 Capture the Ditto and transfer it to G/S it will be shiny
Ditto isn't the only Pokemon that only learns one move, the same is true of Unown. DrStubbsberg

Does this exploit belong in the article? Probably never going to post again, Farsight001 13:38, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

About
In the anime, Brock is a Pokémon Breeder who is a close friend and traveling companion of Ash's. Some notes on official sketches of his character set his age at 15 at the start of the series.

He originally trained Rock Pokémon, but has, since the second episode he appeared in, diversified. As he has stated in Battling A Cute Drama!, his philosophy is that the important thing about being a Pokémon Trainer is the bond between Trainer and Pokémon. He is an experienced cook and caretaker by nature, so he always makes scrumptious food both for Pokémon and for humans.

One of his best known character traits is that he falls in love with every pretty woman he meets, particularly Officer Jenny and Nurse Joy. He can tell whether they are real (women) or impostors as well. This "ability" has been used multiple times in the series. He has always held a supporting role in the series, usually contributing more in terms of wisdom and comedic antics than the action and battles of the series.

Early on, he showed that he carries around a Boulder for identification. He also has a Contest Pass for the Kanto region, though he only used it once, as well as one for Hoenn which was required to watch a contest there.

Brock has had two notable musical appearances. One is the Japanese ending theme タケシのパラダイス Takeshi's Paradise, which is about his love for women and his determination to find love despite often appearing foolish and getting heartbroken. There is a running joke about him singing this song often in the anime, since it's the only song he knows. The other is the Pokémon Karaokémon song Two Perfect Girls, which is about his love of both Officer Jenny and Nurse Joy.

Appearance
Brock's most notable feature about his appearance is that his eyes naturally appear closed. The rare times people see them open are when they are forced open unnaturally: from a hit with Charmander's Flamethrower in The Ninja Poké-Showdown, when being hit in the back of the head by Jessie's tail in Who Gets to Keep Togepi?, and when he makes a face for Larvitar in A Crowning Achievement. This has been the center of fan attention for a long time.

He also has tan skin, notably darker than the skin of any other major character in the series.

Brock is the tallest of main characters, and the closest to looking like an adult. Next to actual adult characters, however, it is clear that he is still a teenager.

Not counting temporary outfits, he has worn List of clothing in the anime over the span of the anime, all of which have had the colors orange, green, and brown, with blue shoes. His outfits in the games are also made up of the colors orange, green, and brown.

Character
Brock is considered the most mature, wise and level-headed of the main characters, and he is arguably the most intelligent character as well. He often acts as an older brother and caretaker to the other characters and a voice of reason in disputes. He will usually place others before him and will help and support his friends even against his better judgment or at his own expense. While he is not shown to battle often, he can understand the situations and strategies in any Pokémon battle, and often explains them to the other characters, probably due to the fact that he was once a Gym Leader. His wisdom is possibly derived from how observant he is; he can tell just by sight how a Pokémon is feeling and spot the differences between the various Officer Jenny and Nurse Joy.

Brock always carries books and maps with him, and thus is usually the character who knows where the group is headed and what they can do when they get there, though in Advanced Generation this role was mostly taken over by the PokéNav. He also carries a lot of other supplies, such as potions, Pokémon food, and a set of cookware, as well as practical tools like a brush and pocket knife; in The School of Hard Knocks, the extent of his preparedness and comically large capacity of his bag was demonstrated, as he pulled out a table and full tea set out of his backpack. He is a domestic, and grooms not only his Pokémon but also those of his friends with whom he travels. He handles all the cooking and cleaning for his friends.

Despite this, all his maturity and rationality leaves him completely at the sight of a beautiful woman, as he falls in love with every pretty girl he meets. Brock has a desperate need for female companionship which grows worse as he fails to gain it. He will do anything and everything he thinks will impress women, which inevitably ends with his heart being broken every time. A few women have shown interest in him as well, such as Wilhelmina, Temacu, Pike Queen and Holly, but most do not notice him or are not interested. No matter how many times he is disappointed, though, Brock remains determined to find a girl to start a relationship with, and has indicated several times he would stop traveling with Ash and stay with the girl if this happened. This behavior tends to wear on the nerves of other characters, and Misty and Max have both commonly dragged Brock away from women by his ear. Some of Brock's own Pokémon, most notably Brock, have attacked him for getting too flirtatious with women.

His goals have played a passive role in his character's activity and development. Unlike other characters, who aspire to achieve and excel in competitive fields like Pokémon training and Pokémon Contests, his aim to become a great Pokémon Breeder is a quiet one and thus does not get showcased frequently. His other goal, to find a girlfriend, is similar to Team Rocket's quest to capture Pikachu in that both are for comedy and thus doomed to fail. His role has always been purely one as support for other main characters.

History
Not much is known about his early childhood, except that his first Pokémon was his Brock, which he received as a gift at the age of 10. Sometime after, his father, Flint, left home to become a great Trainer. When he never returned, his mother, Lola, left them as well, leaving Brock to take care of his siblings, as well as their house and Pewter Gym, by himself (though the English version of Showdown in Pewter City has Flint claim she died, and some speculate he was lying). However, Flint eventually returned home considering himself a failure, and instead of returning to his family he donned a disguise and sold rocks as souvenirs at the edge of town. After Brock awarded Ash the Boulder Badge, Flint came forward and confessed who he was. Flint took on the responsibilities of the Pewter Gym and his family, leaving Brock free to journey with Ash and Misty.

Brock only became the Gym Leader because he felt it was his responsibility, and he admitted to Ash that he would rather care for Pokémon than battle them. It is his dream to become a great breeder, and when Flint took back control of the Gym, Brock was allowed to start following this dream. Most notably, he took care of a Brock that belonged to a breeder named Suzy. Shortly before Vulpix was returned, Brock used it in a Pokémon Beauty Contest.

Brock was also able to meet and make advances towards the many beautiful women he met. At first, he was more casual about approaching women, such as the Officer Jenny in Cerulean City, and more modest as well, such as when he met Melanie. However, he became more open and passionate towards almost all single young women as time progressed.

Brock briefly left the show during the Orange Islands saga to work for Professor Ivy on Valencia Island and so is only seen in a couple of cameos in the second movie. While there, something happened that will probably remain secret as Brock will only huddle and say "that name" whenever he is asked about it. (Brock does mention his work for her in Destiny Deoxys, though this line was added in the dub.) After this incident, Brock returned to Kanto where he was found by Delia Ketchum, who helped him to regain his strength. Brock then became a rival to Mimey until he rejoined Ash and Misty as the three traveled to Johto. They stayed together for the entire region, but at the end of this journey, the three went their separate ways, with Brock's help requested at home by his father.

Upon his return home, Brock was dismayed to find that his mother had returned and commandeered the gym, turning the Rock-type haven into a brightly decorated Water den. Brock battled her for the honor of Rock-types and won, promising his brother Forrest that he would become Gym Leader someday.

After that, Brock returned to follow Ash through Hoenn, along with their new friends May and Max, and then through Kanto again as Ash took on the Kanto Battle Frontier. He left briefly when the Advanced Generation series ended in order to visit his home, but quickly returned and is now traveling with Ash and Dawn in Sinnoh.

Brock is among the longest-lived main characters in the anime, only being absent from the Orange Islands season and thus ranked under only the permanent characters of Ash, Pikachu, Jessie, James, and MTR.

Pokémon
As gym tradition dictated, Brock's first Pokémon were Rock-types. However, once he was able to leave his gym to travel, he has dedicated himself to learn about how to care for a variety of Pokémon. Thus, his Pokémon tend to be an eclectic mix of types and dispositions. However, all of his Pokémon tend to have strong bonds with Brock and are on par with Ash's Pokémon in terms of battling strength, despite the fact that Brock does not go out of his way to train his Pokémon.

This listing is of Brock's Pokémon as of the most recent Japanese episode.
Trivia
* Most official sources do not give Brock a last name. However, several sources suggest that in the anime, his last name is Harrison. In the July 2006 issue of K-Zone Magazine, Eric Stuart was interviewed and stated that Brock's last name is Harrison.
* Brock's house is located directly behind the Pewter Gym. His room is only seen briefly in Having a Wailord of a Time, but what is seen of it shows that it is decorated in a traditional Japanese style, including fusuma, a tansu chest, and a futon for a bed.
* Brock owns two Poison Pokémon, Brock and Brock, whose names both start with Cro-.
* Brock is currently the only main character of the anime with Steel Pokémon, owning two, Brock and Brock.
* Brock is the fourth main character to own a Pokémon hatched from an egg. The first was Misty with Misty and later Misty, the second was Ash with Ash, and the third was May with May.
* Brock is one of three of Ash's friends who has had their father make an appearance in the anime. The others are May and Max, who are brother and sister. Coincidentally, both fathers are Gym Leaders.
* Brock captured a new Pokémon sooner after his debut than any other main character, even Ash, by capturing Zubat in EP006.
* Brock's Advanced Generation and Diamond & Pearl stock art use the same pose, changing only his outfit.
* Brock has been shown to be able to identify when women are really cross dressing men in disguise by having a peculiar lack of attraction to them. He's also able to do the opposite. A significant exception to this is Ash, who in the guise of Ashley was able to slip through Brock's radar, though this may be attributed to the fact Ash is younger than most of the girls Brock generally seeks out so he might have not paid much attention.
* Brock has owned four Pokémon whose evolutions debuted in a different generation than that Pokémon. (Brock, Brock, Brock, and Brock). Of the four, three of them have evolved so far.
*When the Advanced Generation started, Brock brought only his Brock with him. Forretress is not in the Hoenn Pokédex.
* Despite starting out as a Rock-type Gym Leader, of all the Pokémon Brock currently owns, only one is pure Rock-type, Brock. Currently, it is with him.
* Brock is the only one out of all of Ash's friends to have owned at least one Pokémon from each of the four generations.
* Brock is the only one of Ash's friends to appear in every movie. His appearance in The Power of One was merely a cameo though.

Interview with Hidaka about Brock's short absence from the anime
There had been some debate between members of the fanbase in regards to why Brock was removed from the main cast during the Orange Islands arc, why Tracey Sketchit was created, and why Brock returned later. In a interview with former Pokémon anime director and storyboard artist Masamitsu Hidaka, he stated his own reason why Brock was removed from the cast and why he eventually returned. He (or, rather his translator) revealed that the true reason they replaced Brock is because, once they realized Pokémon was going global, there was a chance that Americans, if not anyone else outside of Japan, would view Brock as a racist stereotype because of his eyes (even though there wasn't an actual complaint yet). So they created a "tall, anglo-saxon looking person to be on the safe side". They later replaced Tracey with Brock again once they realized that no one really cared as to what Brock looks like, and actually enjoyed his character.

However, this was only stated by Hidaka and not by any other staff member.

Levels are a measurement of how strong a Pokémon currently is. They are portrayed differently in the anime, games, and manga.

In the games
Levels are featured predominantly in the Pokémon games. They are determined by how much experience that Pokémon has. A Pokémon's level will range from 1 to 100. When a Pokémon gains a level, its stats increase by a small amount. It may also learn a new move or evolve. Opponent's levels may be viewed in-battle, and players may see their own Pokémon's levels in-battle, in the PC or by using the menu.

A Pokémon's level will also affect its happiness, raising it slightly when the Pokémon levels up. This means that a Cleffa trained in battle will eventually evolve into a Clefairy, with its happiness going up slightly each level. Using Rare Candies will also raise happiness, though for a long time people thought it did not, due to a Pokémon's happiness also being raised by the large amount of walking that a player must do in long grass to encounter wild Pokémon or recharge such items as the Vs. Seeker.

In Generations III and IV, when a Pokémon has reached level 100, and has not gained maximum EV's, it cannot continue gaining Effort Points through battle. Vitamins can still be used to raise EV's. In Generations I and II, the player can use the box trick.

By exploiting the Missingno. glitch in Generation I or using other cheats, a Pokémon can temporarily acquire a level higher than 100. However, whenever this Pokémon gains any amount of experience, its level will revert to 100.

In Generations I and II, Pokémon assigned to the "Medium Slow" experience formula (1,059,860 Exp. at level 100) were unavailable at a level below 2 due to the "Medium Slow" formula generating a negative Exp. value at level 1; this resulted in such a level 1 Pokémon jumping straight to level 100. Pokémon eggs, therefore, hatched at a standard level of 5. The Generation III overhaul addressed this error; however, eggs still hatched at level 5, likely to maintain continuity. Generation IV finally set all hatched eggs to level 1.

Underleveled Pokémon
Through some unique circumstances, it is possible to have Pokémon at a lower level than they are usually available. Underleveled Pokémon appeared as early as Red and Green, with level 4-6 Kakuna and Metapod available in Viridian Forest. Kakuna and Metapod cannot be obtained by evolution until level 7.

In Red and Blue, it is possible to obtain an Electrode as low as level 2. To do this, one must catch a Pikachu in Viridian Forest at level 2, evolve it with the Thunderstone, and trade it on Cinnabar Island. Underleveled Pokémon also appeared in Yellow, with level 9 Pidgeotto available in Viridian Forest. Pidgeotto cannot be obtained by evolution until level 18; this event is meant to syndicate with the anime.

The following generations have all contained areas where some Pokémon may be found underleveled:
* In Generation II, by using the Super Rod in the lake at the south end of 45, Dragonair can be encountered at level 10.
* In Generation III, Cascoon and Silcoon appear at level 5 in Petalburg Woods. Also, in FireRed/LeafGreen, level 20 Poliwhirl can be captured, and traded for an underleved Jynx, allowing it to learn Lovely Kiss without a Exchangable item.
* Diamond's Poké Radar and dual-slot mode let players find rare Pokémon from outside of the Sinnoh Pokédex, some of which are underleveled alongside their pre-evolutionary forms. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, a level 6 Furret can be found on Route 1, and the Pokémon Music Channel can produce level 4 Linoone.

Some non-player character Trainers use underleveled Pokémon in battle. Lance has three underleveled Dragonite in the Generation II games; Mars has a Purugly at level 16 in Diamond and Pearl. Many other in-game Trainers also possess underleveled Pokémon; this is primarily done to fill the player's Pokédex at a faster rate.

In Emerald, the Pomeg glitch allowed players to obtain any stage of a Pokémon capable of being hatched from an egg at level 5, such as a Tyranitar.

Disobedience
When a Pokémon is obtained in a trade, it oftentimes will not obey the player's commands if it is at too high a level. The Pokémon will either ignore orders and use a different move, do nothing at all and loaf around, or go to sleep. This can be corrected if the player has the proper badges. Having less than two badges means that no traded Pokémon whose level is above 10 will obey the player, while having all eight makes all Pokémon obey the player. The specific badges that cause a rise in the level of obeying Pokémon can be found on their page, though they are typically the second, fourth, sixth, and eighth badges obtained.

In the anime
The concept of levels of Pokémon is not as detailed, nor as frequently mentioned, in the anime. The first time levels were referred to was by students at the Academy in The School of Hard Knocks. Joe was able to quote the levels at which Pidgey and the rest of its family evolve and learn certain moves. The main characters and their Pokémon, however, remain seemingly oblivious to the idea.

Misty mentions them in Bulbasaur's Mysterious Garden where she says "That Rhyhorn must be at a high level!" referring to a trainer's Rhyhorn's formidable strength as it uses Take Down on Ash's Bulbasaur, severely injuring it. This confirms that she is aware of levels and that the ability to inflict damage on certain Pokémon becomes easier when a Pokémon grows a level.

Drake comments that Ash's Charizard is on a higher level than he thought.

Brock mentions them once, in Doing What Comes Natu-rally!. He states that moves become more powerful as a Pokémon's level is raised; and Ash adds that the best way to raise levels is by battling. Despite this, Ash's most used Pokémon, Pikachu, doesn't show signs of being at a higher level than any other Pokémon. After appearing in more than 600 episodes, and battling in most of them, its level would be expected to be very high: but it is still defeated easily by some other Trainers' Pokémon, even those with only average strength.

Dawn's Piplup also shows that the anime doesn't strictly follow the games' system. In its debut episode, it used Bide, a move Piplup normally doesn't learn until level 18, by which point it would be showing signs of evolution. This did not happen until Stopped in the Name of Love!. Therefore, level up moves can generally be learned at any time in the anime.

In the two Mystery Dungeon specials, levels are mentioned, but not explained. This may mean that Pokémon themselves understand the concept of levels in the anime but humans do not.
Trivia
*Before Generation IV, it was impossible to get a Pokémon at level 1 without the aid of a glitch or cheating device. The lowest level Pokémon would be at level 2 in the wild, and eggs would hatch at Lv. 5. In Generation IV however, eggs are hatched at level 1, Regigigas and Magikarp can be caught at level 1 in Platinum, and Dialga, Palkia, or Giratina can be obtained at level 1 in HeartGold and SoulSilver.
*In Generation I, it was possible to encounter and capture Pokémon at levels over 100 through means of a glitch.
