Much like {{game|FireRed and LeafGreen|s}} revisited the [[Generation I]] story of [[Kanto]], HeartGold and SoulSilver retell the story of [[Johto]], with the player's starting area being [[New Bark Town]]. While the games feature several expansions in key areas, the overall plot follows the same direction as the original {{2v2|Gold|Silver}}. Some aspects exclusive to {{v2|Crystal}} are also included. Like FireRed and LeafGreen could link up with {{3v2|Ruby|Sapphire|Emerald}} to complete the Pokédex by trading regionally exclusive Pokémon, HeartGold and SoulSilver can link up with {{3v2|Diamond|Pearl|Platinum}} to obtain Pokémon unavailable in Johto and Kanto, such as {{p|Turtwig}}.

{{ga|Kris}}, despite being the female counterpart of Crystal's player character {{ga|Gold}}, is not included as the female player character, with a {{ga|Kotone|new character}} instead taking her place. Whether she is chosen to be the [[player character]] or not, she will still appear in the game, taking a pseudo-[[rival]] role similar to the unselected characters of [[Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire Versions|Ruby, Sapphire]], {{v2|Emerald}}, {{3v2|Diamond|Pearl|Platinum}}.

The games were released on September 12, 2009 in Japan, and are scheduled to be released in spring of 2010 in North America and Europe. The Japanese release date is the same day that {{game|Yellow}} was released in 1998.

==Changes from Pokémon Gold and Silver==
===Aesthetic changes===
* {{ga|Gold}} receives a redesign while {{ga|Kotone}} replaces {{ga|Kris}}.
* All the game's music is rearranged to better utilize the DS's sound capabilities. A key item allows the player to switch back and forth freely between the arranged soundtrack and original chiptune soundtrack.
* The [[PokéGear]] has been redesigned. There are a range of skins that can be used and changed at the player's will.
* Much like Kanto's was for its remakes, Johto's Pokédex has been redesigned. Unlike Kanto's remakes, which contained the same [[List of Pokémon by Kanto Pokédex number|regional Pokédex]] as the originals, [[List of Pokémon by New Pokédex number|the original regional Pokédex]] for Johto has been [[List of Pokémon by Johto Pokédex number|slightly altered]], including several [[Generation IV]] evolutions for Pokémon found in Johto.
* An image of certain locations, similar to that of {{v2|FireRed and LeafGreen|s}}, appears when entering the location. Some of these images change depending on the time of day while others change the image of the Pokémon obtainable at the location on the image at random.
* [[Team Rocket Grunt]]s are redesigned once again.
* [[Rocket Executive]]s are also redesigned from Generation II, with four new ones appearing: [[Apollo]], [[Athena]], [[Lambda]], and {{OBP|Lance|Team Rocket}}. Like [[Team Galactic]]'s [[Commander]]s followed a planetary naming scheme, the Rocket Executives are all named for real-world spacecraft.
* {{p|Ho-Oh}} and {{p|Lugia}} each have their own unique battle music, while the [[legendary beasts]] each use differently remixed versions of their battle theme from {{game|Crystal}}.

* {{m|Rock Smash}}, previously a TM usable on the field in the originals, is now a full-fledged HM as it has been since Generation III. {{m|Defog}} loses its HM status to the returning {{m|Whirlpool}}.
* Ambient sound effects are used with greater frequency than in previous games; for example, running water and the player walking through grass will produce audible noises.
* The [[Magnet Train]]'s tracks can be seen overground in locations such as [[Route 32]].
* [[Pal Park]] is located where the closed [[Kanto Safari Zone]] once stood in [[Fuchsia City]].
* The [[Rage Candy Bar]] is now a [[key item]]. This is likely to prevent the player from trading it to {{game2|Diamond|Pearl|Platinum}}, which does not have any item data for the Rage Candy Bar.

===Location changes===
* Elm's Lab has an upstairs level, where [[Professor Elm|the professor]] and his family live, his old house being occupied by Kotone/Hibiki and her/his family.
* Maps have been remade to match the design style used in {{3v2|Diamond|Pearl|Platinum}}.
* The {{jo|Battle Tower}} west of [[Olivine City]], introduced in {{game|Crystal}}, returns, bringing with it the {{OBP|Battle Frontier|Generation IV}} introduced in Platinum.
* Two new routes, [[Route 47]] and [[Route 48]], are introduced near [[Cianwood City]]. They lead to a new [[Johto Safari Zone|Safari Zone]], as well as the [[Hidden Tower]].
* [[Mt. Silver]] is much bigger and [[Viridian Forest]] is not cut down.
* [[Cerulean Cave]] and the [[Seafoam Islands]] remain as they were in Generation III (though [[Blaine]] still takes part of the Seafoam Islands), allowing the [[legendary Pokémon]] that live inside them to be battled. {{p|Moltres}}, formerly found in {{ka|Victory Road}} and [[Mt. Ember]], can be found in Mt. Silver.
* The [[Fighting Dojo]] in [[Saffron City]] takes a role similar to Sinnoh's [[Battleground]].

===Gameplay changes===
* All 493 Pokémon are capable of [[walking Pokémon|following players]] similar to [[Red's Pikachu (game)|Pikachu]] in {{v2|Yellow}}. [[Shiny Pokémon|Shininess]] is also retained. The player can interact with their Pokémon by pressing 'A', and can see how their Pokémon is feeling at the moment. In battle, like Yellow's Pikachu, they are sent out from the side of the screen, rather than from a Poké Ball, unless in certain situations, such as while riding the [[bicycle]] or going into a small space with a big Pokémon.
* Similarly to the event {{p|Shaymin}} and {{p|Regigigas}}'s effect on Platinum, the [[Pikachu-colored Pichu]] will unlock an event near the [[Ilex Forest]] [[Ilex Forest Shrine|Shrine]], where the [[Spiky-eared Pichu]] can be obtained.
* The [[Pokémon storage system]], [[bag]], [[party]] interface, and the screen that pops up when pressing the ''Start'' or ''X'' buttons in the previous games all use the Nintendo DS's touch screen.
* [[Legendary Pokémon]] from other regions can be caught in the games. {{p|Groudon}} and {{p|Kyogre}} appear in SoulSilver and HeartGold, respectively, after the Elite Four, and {{p|Rayquaza}} can be caught in both games once the other members of [[weather trio|its trio]] are brought into the game. {{p|Latias}} (in HeartGold) or {{p|Latios}} (in SoulSilver) can be found roaming in [[Kanto]] later in the game.
* {{m|Headbutt}}ing trees to locate certain Pokémon makes its return. However, this time it can also be used to collect Pokémon from [[Hoenn]] and [[Sinnoh]] after the [[National Pokédex|National Dex]] is acquired.

This event allows players to obtain either {{p|Dialga}}, {{p|Palkia}}, or {{p|Giratina}} at level 1. The only way to obtain the Griseous Orb in this game is to choose Giratina during this event.
* The {{OBP|Gracidea|flower}} can be obtained in the flower shop in [[Goldenrod City]] by bringing any [[Nintendo event|event]] {{p|Shaymin}}.
* [[Eusine]], a major character from {{game|Crystal}} who was not in the original Gold and Silver, appears, as do other aspects originally featured in Crystal.
* A new sidequest, the [[Pokéthlon]], features ten mini-games that pit Pokémon in athletic competitions. Its system appears to be analogous to that of {{pkmn|Contests}} from previous games.
* Using the [[Apricorn Shaker]], Apricorns can now also be mixed into drinks that increase Pokémon's Pokéthlon stats.
* [[Berries]] can be grown portably using the [[Berry Planter]], where the [[Squirtbottle]] is controlled via the touch screen to water four Berries at a time. It is currently unknown where Berries can be obtained in the first place, but it appears that they do not grow on the trees where their Generation II counterparts were found, as those are used for growing Apricorns.
* The [[Running Shoes]] are obtained in [[Cherrygrove City]] and can be permanently selected using the touchscreen [[menu]]. The selected item (from pressing Y or SELECT in previous games) is also on the touchscreen. Two items can be selected as opposed to just one.
* The [[Radio Card]] for the Poké Gear is required to continue in the game - Whitney will not appear in her Gym until the player has the Radio Card.
* [[Starter Pokémon]] from [[Kanto]] and [[Hoenn]] can be collected from [[Professor Oak]] and [[Steven Stone]] once certain conditions are met.
* [[Photography|Commemorative photos]] can now be taken around Johto and Kanto with the player's partner Pokémon, team, [[Gym Leader]]s, and certain notable citizens.
* An {{pkmn2|event}}-exclusive {{p|Celebi}} unlocks an encounter with former [[Team Rocket]] boss and Viridian Gym Leader [[Giovanni]]. Giovanni was mentioned repeatedly in the original Gold and Silver, but did not appear.
* Many Pokémon have acquired the ability to learn new moves and expand and improve their movesets, for example {{p|Togepi}} can now learn {{m|Extrasensory}} through breeding.
*Like the [[GBA Wireless Adapter]] that came with FireRed and LeafGreen, a bonus is included with the purchase of HeartGold and SoulSilver: a [[Poké Ball]]-shaped {{wp|pedometer}} called the [[PokéWalker]] that has the capacity to link to the two games and hold a Pokémon. Storing a Pokémon in this manner increases its [[experience]] and [[happiness]] as the wearer walks. Other Pokémon can be captured in exclusive Pokéwalker-only areas and then transferred to the main game.

==Pokémon==
As in {{game|Gold and Silver|s}}, the primary Pokémon of the remakes are native to the Johto and Kanto regions. Due to advances in gameplay since the second generation, the regional Pokédex used in Gold and Silver (the [[List of Pokémon by New Pokédex number|New Pokédex]]) has been updated to include those Pokémon which [[evolution|evolve]] upon learning a new [[move]]. Rather than simply excluding these evolutions (as {{game|FireRed and LeafGreen|s}} did with [[happiness]]-based evolutions), an improved [[List of Pokémon by Johto Pokédex number|Johto Dex]] was established with 256 Pokémon: five more than the New Pokédex.

Similarly to other recently released Pokémon games, Pokémon from outside the regional Pokédex can be captured after defeating the [[Elite Four]] and earning the [[List of Pokémon by National Pokédex number|National Dex]]. Pokémon native to Sinnoh and Hoenn can be found in various methods. [[Mass Outbreak|Swarms]] of Pokémon sometimes break out across the Johto and Kanto regions; oftentimes these are not native to either of the regions. Pokémon from other regions can be located by playing one of two special stations on the [[PokéGear]]'s radio function. There is a channel for Sinnoh Pokémon which plays only on Thursdays; the Hoenn channel only plays on Wednesdays. By having either of these programs turned on when in [[tall grass]] the chance of finding a foreign Pokémon increases. The [[Bug Catching Contest]] also hosts, from time to time, Hoenn and Sinnoh Pokémon. They will only appear on Thursdays and Saturdays. The [[Johto Safari Zone]]'s customization option also allows for the finding of Pokémon from other regions.

In an apparent attempt to remove reliance on [[Generation III]] cartridges, [[starter Pokémon]] of Kanto and Hoenn can be obtained late in the game from [[Professor Oak]] and [[Steven Stone]] respectively. Some [[legendary Pokémon]] which were not included in the [[Generation II]] games, such as {{p|Mewtwo}}, and the more recently released {{p|Latias}} and {{p|Latios}} can also be captured in HeartGold and SoulSilver, respectively.

As in all [[version|main series]] Pokémon game, there are a number of Pokémon which can be found in [[Version-exclusive Pokémon|one of the paired games, but not the other]]. A list of these Pokémon follows below.

==Pokémon==
As in {{game|Gold and Silver|s}}, the primary Pokémon of the remakes are native to the Johto and Kanto regions. Due to advances in gameplay since the second generation, the regional Pokédex used in Gold and Silver (the [[List of Pokémon by New Pokédex number|New Pokédex]]) has been updated to include those Pokémon which [[evolution|evolve]] upon learning a new [[move]]. Rather than simply excluding these evolutions (as {{game|FireRed and LeafGreen|s}} did with [[happiness]]-based evolutions), an improved [[List of Pokémon by Johto Pokédex number|Johto Dex]] was established with 256 Pokémon: five more than the New Pokédex.

Similarly to other recently released Pokémon games, Pokémon from outside the regional Pokédex can be captured after defeating the [[Elite Four]] and earning the [[List of Pokémon by National Pokédex number|National Dex]]. Pokémon native to Sinnoh and Hoenn can be found in various methods. [[Mass Outbreak|Swarms]] of Pokémon sometimes break out across the Johto and Kanto regions; oftentimes these are not native to either of the regions. Pokémon from other regions can be located by playing one of two special stations on the [[PokéGear]]'s radio function. There is a channel for Sinnoh Pokémon which plays only on Thursdays; the Hoenn channel only plays on Wednesdays. By having either of these programs turned on when in [[tall grass]] the chance of finding a foreign Pokémon increases. The [[Bug Catching Contest]] also hosts, from time to time, Hoenn and Sinnoh Pokémon. They will only appear on Thursdays and Saturdays. The [[Johto Safari Zone]]'s customization option also allows for the finding of Pokémon from other regions.

In an apparent attempt to remove reliance on [[Generation III]] cartridges, [[starter Pokémon]] of Kanto and Hoenn can be obtained late in the game from [[Professor Oak]] and [[Steven Stone]] respectively. Some [[legendary Pokémon]] which were not included in the [[Generation II]] games, such as {{p|Mewtwo}}, and the more recently released {{p|Latias}} and {{p|Latios}} can also be captured in HeartGold and SoulSilver, respectively.

As in all [[version|main series]] Pokémon game, there are a number of Pokémon which can be found in [[Version-exclusive Pokémon|one of the paired games, but not the other]]. A list of these Pokémon follows below.

===Safari Zone===

The Safari Zone is a special [[Pokémon]] preserve where {{pkmn|Trainer}}s can enter to capture certain types of Pokémon. It is owned by the [[Safari Zone Warden|Warden]].

For {{PDollar}}500, the player will receive 30 Safari Balls. With a large area to cover, Trainers must plan out their destination so as to arrive in time to capture all the Pokémon they want.

When a [[wild Pokémon]] appears, no Pokémon may be sent out to battle it: catching Pokémon here, as in all Safari Zones, requires sheer luck. There are four options in the battle screen: Throw a [[Poké Ball|Safari Ball]], throw bait, throw a rock, and run away. Throwing bait makes a Pokémon less likely to run, but makes it harder to catch; while throwing a rock does the reverse, making it easier to catch but more likely to run.

During [[Generation I]] and [[Generation III]], however, a sweepstakes is taking place to find a hidden house deep in the Safari Zone, called the Secret House. The winner of the sweepstakes receives {{HM|03|Surf}}. During [[Generation II]] and [[Generation IV]] the Safari Zone is not open. In its place (in {{game|HeartGold and SoulSilver|s}} only) is the Kanto [[Pal Park]].

===Safari Zone Warden===

Safari Zone Warden is the man in charge of the [[Kanto Safari Zone]]. His house is located on the south-eastern side of the city. He lives in a cottage next to the [[Pokémon Center]]. The locals of Fuchsia nicknamed the Warden "Slowpoke" because he has a vacant look similar to that seen on a {{p|Slowpoke}}. He's actually very knowledgeable about Pokémon, which should only be natural as taking care of the Safari Zone [[Pokémon]] is part of his job. He has a collection of rare Pokémon [[fossil]]s. He has recently lost his false teeth in the Safari Zone and became unable to speak clearly. If the protagonist of the Kanto [[Generation I]] or [[Generation III]] games returns his teeth to him, he'll give them {{HM|04|Strength}}. [[Wild Pokémon]] appear in the city in a pond behind [[Safari Zone Warden]]'s house.

He also runs a promotion in the Safari Zone. Pokémon Trainers who find the Secret House on the grounds are given {{HM|03|Surf}}. It's probable that he's friends with [[Koga]], as the [[Gym Leader]] patrols the grounds of the Safari Zone to keep things safe. Koga's daughter, [[Janine]], also trains just outside of the Safari Zone.

In [[Generation II]], Warden has left on a trip, so the Safari Zone has been shut down and most of the exclusive Pokémon have been moved to adjacent Routes.

A [[Move Deleter]] resides in Fuchsia City in [[Generation III]]. He is a very forgetful man that lives alone in a house next to the [[Pokémon Center]] in the city. For no charge he will make a [[Pokémon]] forget a [[move]] it knows, provided that the move is not the only move which that Pokémon knows. He is the only way for a Pokémon to forget [[HM]] moves such as {{m|Cut}} or {{m|Fly}}.

===Pokémon Zoo===
A Pokémon zoo is located in Fuchsia City, just outside the Safari Zone. However, it is closed, like the Safari Zone, in Generation II. There are [[Pokémon]] on display, including {{p|Chansey}}, {{p|Lapras}}, {{p|Voltorb}}, {{p|Kangaskhan}}, and {{p|Slowpoke}}. In addition, the [[Fossil]] that the player "shares" with the [[Super Nerd]] in [[Mt. Moon]] appears here as well. It will be a {{p|Kabuto}} if the player chose the [[Dome Fossil]], and an {{p|Omanyte}} if the player chose the [[Helix Fossil]].

==Fuchsia Gym==

The Fuchsia Gym is the official [[gym]] of Fuchsia City. It is based on {{type2|Poison}} [[Pokémon]]. In Generations {{Gen|I}} and {{Gen|III}}, the [[Gym Leader]] is [[Koga]]. However, by [[Generation II]], the Gym Leader's duties had been taken up by Koga's daughter, [[Janine]]. Trainers who are victorious at this gym may receive the {{Badge|Soul}}. The Fuchsia Gym can be difficult to navigate, as both Koga and Janine have installed invisible walls. Janine has added a further step to the puzzle, as the other trainers in the gym all look like her. A field based on the gym also appears in {{Eng|Pokémon Stadium}}'s [[Gym Leader Castle]]. ==Differences among generations==
Three years from [[Generation I]] and {{gen|III}} to [[Generation II]], the city has changed quite dramatically. The Pokémon Zoo has closed down, transforming the northern half of the city, to a grassy plain, making the northern half only accessible by the use of {{m|Cut}}. There is also an area just discovered in the north-western side of the city, that contains a [[Burnt Berry]].
In [[Generation II]], Warden has left on a trip, so the Safari Zone has been shut down and most of the exclusive Pokémon have been moved to adjacent Routes.

Something came to my mind a few days ago, how do we classify the Pokémon games? RPG, or JRPG? I mean, technically, they'd be JRPG's right, seeing as they're made in Japan, and not only that but are similar in many ways too other JRPG's. Like the battle systems, the only difference is in most JRPG's you play humans, but in Pokémon you play a human, and through them you command the Pokémon. What do you guys think? Something came to my mind a few days ago, how do we classify the Pokémon games? RPG, or JRPG? I mean, technically, they'd be JRPG's right, seeing as they're made in Japan, and not only that but are similar in many ways too other JRPG's. :If someone wants to contribute, then one account surely is enough. If multiple accounts are made and left, then in an instance when the first account is blocked, the second account can be used to get around that block. ==In the games==
Silver's first (and currently only) appearance in the Pokémon video games took place during [[Generation II]]. Although he is expected to appear in the [[Pok%C3%A9mon_HeartGold_and_SoulSilver_Versions|remake of Gold and Silver version]]. He was first seen lurking near a window to the Elm Pokémon Laboratory; he later broke in, stealing a Pokémon (the Pokémon that is strongest against the {{player}}'s chosen starter). He later used this Pokémon to battle Gold/Kris, doing this many times as they journeyed through Johto. This is not the only Pokémon he has stolen, as he also stole a {{p|Sneasel}} from a man in [[Cianwood City]], and uses it in battle for the rest of the game.

Throughout his travels, Silver showed a strong hate for [[Team Rocket]]. He strongly interfered with the revived Team Rocket's plans at least twice, including their experiments with radio signals at the [[Lake of Rage]]. His stated reason for this dislike was that they are "weak" when cornered, and that he only cares about strong opponents. During one of his missions against Team Rocket, Silver apparently fought against Lance, who utterly decimated him. Silver is soon frustrated, as he claims that Lance told him he doesn't love his Pokémon enough. Lance's words are Silver's catalyst, as he begins to metamorphisize into a more kind hearted person. Before a battle at [[Indigo Plateau]], Silver claims that he has reached his peak, finally understanding what Lance told him in [[Mahogany Town]]. During this battle, he uses a {{p|Crobat}}, which is only obtained when it loves its trainer, displaying that he now truly does care for his Pokémon.

Shortly after Gold/Kris defeated the Pokémon League, Silver took up training in the [[Dragon's Den]]. His personality has been likened by the Dragon Master to be similar to [[Clair]]'s. He can be seen there on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and can be challenged at the [[Pokémon League]] on Mondays and Wednesdays. His activities on the weekend are unknown, but now that he is a kinder person, it can be assumed that he does not train on these days.

* Some fans call him "Kamon" to discern him from {{Special|Silver|his Pokémon Special counterpart}} and {{an|Silver|an anime character}}. The name is taken from the optional names for the {{ga|Gold|player}} in Silver, much as some call {{ga|Blue}} "Gary", as the name is found as one of the options for the player in Blue, and the rival in Red.
* As a possible reference to Silver's training schedule, {{ga|Pearl}} also can be battled again (on Saturdays and Sundays) after the player becomes champion. He can also be found training at [[Stark Mountain]] during the week in {{game|Diamond and Pearl|s}}.
*If Silver's stolen starter is {{p|Totodile}}, he uses {{p|Croconaw}} at level 16 in his second battle, despite Totodile only being able to evolve from level 18 onwards. However, if Silver's stolen starter is {{p|Cyndaquil}}, he uses {{p|Quilava}} at level 32 in his fourth battle, while the other two are their final forms (which is normal).
*In his anime cameo, his only known Pokémon is a {{p|Nidoking}}. All other game rivals that have made anime appearances have been seen with the {{type2|Water}} starter from their home region, indicating another possible Pokémon for Silver to have (which would also fit in weakening [[Jimmy's Typhlosion]]).
*Two of Silver's Pokémon in his final team received evolutions in [[Generation IV]]. The same two Pokémon are also the only members of his team that did not evolve twice.
**Furthermore, {{p|Sneasel}} is the only member of his final team that is not part of a {{cat|Pokémon that are part of a three-stage evolutionary line|three-stage evolutionary line}} as of [[Generation IV]].
