Three years later, during [[Generation II]] and {{game|HeartGold and SoulSilver|s}}, the [[Generation IV]] remakes, he is the [[Gym Leader]] of [[Viridian City]], having taken that position after [[Giovanni]] disbanded [[Team Rocket]] and went into solo training.

==In the games==
He is a very cocky and somewhat unfriendly young man, typically bidding {{ga|Red}}/{{ga|Leaf}} farewell with "Smell ya later!", and his primary motivation throughout the game is to become the greatest Trainer. He eventually accomplishes this, defeating the [[Kanto]] [[Elite Four]] and becoming the [[Pokémon Champion]], but is quickly defeated by the player, losing the position.

In {{game2|Red|Green|Blue}}, {{game|Yellow}}, and {{game|FireRed and LeafGreen|s}}, Blue is the player's rival: he will meet up with the player as he or she journeys across the [[Kanto]] region, challenging him or her every once in a while to test their skills. Like the player, he receives a starter Pokémon from Professor Oak, his grandfather: the one he chooses will be of the type which weakens the type of the player's choice. In Yellow, he will take the {{p|Eevee}} Oak intended for the player.

Eventually, Blue becomes the Champion at [[Indigo Plateau]], though he is defeated by the player before Professor Oak arrives to congratulate him. Frustrated, he journeys to the [[Sevii Islands]] at Professor Oak's request, obtaining new Pokémon to use in his matches against the player at the Indigo Plateau (as all in-game Champions return to their position on the player's return to their hometown).

[[Professor Oak]], his grandfather, deems Blue to have not realized how to care for Pokémon, which he commends the player for on becoming Champion. This is evident in the state Blue leaves [[Silph Co.]] in, which is still under [[Team Rocket]] control, leaving the player to take out Giovanni.

In {{game2|Gold|Silver|Crystal}} and {{game|HeartGold and SoulSilver|s}}, however, it is revealed that, after he was defeated at the Indigo Plateau by {{ga|Red}} ({{ga|Leaf}} does not appear and is not mentioned in the remake games, and did not exist at the time of Generation II), Blue returned to [[Pallet Town]]. As [[Viridian Gym]]'s [[Gym Leader|Leader]], [[Giovanni]], had abandoned it on his defeat at the hands of Red, Blue took the position, now handing out the [[Earth Badge]] to Trainers who bested him. In Generation IV, he also distributes {{TM|92|Trick Room}} to those who win the Earth Badge, but does not give a TM out in Generation II.

In {{game|HeartGold and SoulSilver|s}} only, the player can face Blue in a rematch at the [[Fighting Dojo]]. The method of obtaining his number is slightly different from the other Gym Leaders. The player must have his or her Pokémon at max happiness and have it massaged by [[Daisy Oak]] five times. After the fifth time, she will give the player Blue's phone number when spoken to. He can be called for a rematch on Sunday night.

He has not lost his nature as a traveling Trainer, however, and frequently leaves his Gym, creating problems for Trainers who wish to challenge him.

Blue himself does not make an appearance in the anime; however, he receives an [[cross-canon counterparts|anime counterpart]] in Gary Oak, [[Ash Ketchum]]'s rival. Much like Blue, Gary was initially very arrogant, but mellowed out after he was defeated by his rival. Unlike Blue, however, Gary has not been shown to have taken over Viridian Gym, instead he has decided to become a Pokémon researcher like his grandfather, and is currently working with [[Professor Rowan]] in Sinnoh.

Like his game counterpart (and the illustrations of the Japanese game guides depicting Red, himself, and a third trainer character), he starts out with a [[starter Pokémon]] that disadvantages the main character's, and has [[Professor Oak]] and [[Daisy Oak|Daisy]] as family members, also losing to Red in the [[Indigo League]] in the end, and becoming the successor to the position of [[Viridian City|Viridian]] Gym Leader three years later.

Unlike the Blue of the games, however, Blue is a calm, reserved individual who well knows his limits, as displayed when he withdraws from fighting {{p|Mew}} knowing his [[Blue's Charizard|Charmander]] would eventually lose, and though he initially would do anything to capture and train Pokémon to bend to his own will, he eventually learns from his mistakes from {{adv|Red}} and learns to care for his Pokémon to the point of calling his Machamp back when he knows it was too tired to battle. Red is introduced as a curious 11-year-old boy from [[Pallet Town]] in the instruction manuals of Red, Green, and Blue, having gained an interest in Pokémon after his best friend, {{ga|Blue}}, stopped playing with him and became a bully. His adventure begins one day when [[Professor Oak]] calls the two to his lab for a choice of a [[starter Pokémon]], the last three Pokémon Oak owns. Blue challenges Red to a battle immediately, to test out his new Pokémon, thinking he will easily beat Red.

After Red has journeyed to [[Viridian City]] to the north and taken [[Oak's Parcel|a package]] back to Oak in Pallet, Oak gives Red and Blue each a [[Pokédex]] with which to record data on all known Pokémon in the Kanto region. From here, Red and Blue journey across Kanto, collecting Pokémon to build up their teams, and defeating each of the [[Gym Leader]]s in turn, with Blue always one step ahead, showing up from time to time to impede Red's progress.

Red also comes across a gang of Pokémon thieves, [[Team Rocket]], several times through his journey, defeating a group of [[Team Rocket grunts|Rocket Grunts]] who are trying to steal [[fossil]]s from [[Mt. Moon]], a member who is running the [[Nugget Bridge]] challenge to recruit for the organization on {{rt|24|Kanto}}, and another lone member who has stolen a [[TM]] from a family in [[Cerulean City]]. Eventually, Red uncovers a plot by Team Rocket, infiltrating their [[Rocket Hideout|hideout]] beneath the [[Celadon Game Corner]] and encountering their boss, [[Giovanni]]. Defeating him and ousting Team Rocket from Celadon, Red uses the [[Silph Scope]] that Giovanni hands over to battle {{type2|Ghost}} Pokémon and save [[Mr. Fuji]] in the [[Pokémon Tower]] in [[Lavender Town]], who is being held hostage by a trio of Grunts. Red soon journeys into Saffron City in the heart of Kanto to find it overrun by Team Rocket, who is attempting to take the recently-invented [[Master Ball]] from the [[Silph Co.]] President, and defeats Giovanni again, ending the group's plots for the time being.

With seven badges in hand, Red encounters Giovanni for the final time—this time as the [[Gym Leader|Leader]] of the [[Viridian Gym]], his final obstacle before the [[Elite Four]] of the [[Indigo Plateau]]. Red defeats him in battle, earning the [[Earth Badge]] and causing Giovanni to realize that he has no chance at reviving Team Rocket if he cannot defeat Red. He disbands the organization, promising to go into solo training to better himself.

Making it through {{ka|Victory Road}} and finally to the Indigo Plateau, Red defeats the Elite Four and discovers, to his surprise, that Blue has defeated them before him and is the {{pkmn|Champion}}. Red defeats Blue in the final battle, becoming the Champion himself, but then continues his training, rather than staying at the Indigo Plateau. Encountering an offshoot of Team Rocket in the southern [[Sevii Islands]], Red reveals with his Earth Badge that Giovanni has disbanded the organization, and though defeated the group there intends to revive Team Rocket and bring Giovanni back, having already made plans to force Pokémon to evolve with radio waves. Red continues as a wandering Trainer, eventually making his way to the caves of [[Mt. Silver]], where he trains his Pokémon alone.

Eventually, {{ga|Gold}}, {{ga|Kris}} or {{ga|Lyra}} arrives at Mt. Silver and challenges Red, identified only as a [[Pokémon Trainer]]. Red vanishes from Mt. Silver, and returns every time the Elite Four is defeated again by the player of Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, or SoulSilver.

Pokémon Trainer's mission is to capture Charizard and Ivysaur while Lucas's is to save {{wb|Ness}}. While he does not appear in the games' Story Mode, he is playable in the Battle Mode when a FireRed or LeafGreen cartridge is used, with a male player character chosen. He can take on the Mt. Battle's 100-battle challenge, as well as compete in Colosseum battles. While Red himself does not appear in the anime, his counterpart, introduced in the [[EP001|first episode]], is the anime's main character, Ash Ketchum. Like Red, Ash is from Pallet Town, on a journey to become a Pokémon Master. Unlike Red, Ash's journey did not end with Kanto, and Ash has continued through every other region introduced in the [[main series]] games, as well as the [[Orange Archipelago]] south of Kanto, taking the place of the player characters of Generation II during Johto, and being joined by the anime counterparts of {{ga|May}} and {{ga|Dawn}} during the Hoenn and Sinnoh sagas. Instead of starting with one of the standard three Kanto starters, however, Ash began his journey with a {{AP|Pikachu}}, inspiring {{game|Yellow}}'s creation, as well as causing some to consider Red and Ash to be the same person, most especially due to Red owning {{ga|Red's Pikachu|one}} as well.

* When Red is encountered in [[Mt. Silver]] during [[Generation II]], he has no speech, merely repeating an ellipsis before beginning the battle. This is a reference to the fact that during [[Generation I]] he is a silent protagonist, answering only "yes" or "no" questions. He also remains silent when confronted in [[Generation IV]].

Red is introduced as a curious 11-year-old boy from [[Pallet Town]] in the instruction manuals of Red, Green, and Blue, having gained an interest in Pokémon after his best friend, {{ga|Blue}}, stopped playing with him and became a bully. His adventure begins one day when [[Professor Oak]] calls the two to his lab for a choice of a [[starter Pokémon]], the last three Pokémon Oak owns. Blue challenges Red to a battle immediately, to test out his new Pokémon, thinking he will easily beat Red.

After Red has journeyed to [[Viridian City]] to the north and taken [[Oak's Parcel|a package]] back to Oak in Pallet, Oak gives Red and Blue each a [[Pokédex]] with which to record data on all known Pokémon in the Kanto region. From here, Red and Blue journey across Kanto, collecting Pokémon to build up their teams, and defeating each of the [[Gym Leader]]s in turn, with Blue always one step ahead, showing up from time to time to impede Red's progress.

Red also comes across a gang of Pokémon thieves, [[Team Rocket]], several times through his journey, defeating a group of [[Team Rocket grunts|Rocket Grunts]] who are trying to steal [[fossil]]s from [[Mt. Moon]], a member who is running the [[Nugget Bridge]] challenge to recruit for the organization on {{rt|24|Kanto}}, and another lone member who has stolen a [[TM]] from a family in [[Cerulean City]]. Eventually, Red uncovers a plot by Team Rocket, infiltrating their [[Rocket Hideout|hideout]] beneath the [[Celadon Game Corner]] and encountering their boss, [[Giovanni]]. Defeating him and ousting Team Rocket from Celadon, Red uses the [[Silph Scope]] that Giovanni hands over to battle {{type2|Ghost}} Pokémon and save [[Mr. Fuji]] in the [[Pokémon Tower]] in [[Lavender Town]], who is being held hostage by a trio of Grunts. Red soon journeys into Saffron City in the heart of Kanto to find it overrun by Team Rocket, who is attempting to take the recently-invented [[Master Ball]] from the [[Silph Co.]] President, and defeats Giovanni again, ending the group's plots for the time being.

With seven badges in hand, Red encounters Giovanni for the final time—this time as the [[Gym Leader|Leader]] of the [[Viridian Gym]], his final obstacle before the [[Elite Four]] of the [[Indigo Plateau]]. Red defeats him in battle, earning the [[Earth Badge]] and causing Giovanni to realize that he has no chance at reviving Team Rocket if he cannot defeat Red. He disbands the organization, promising to go into solo training to better himself.

Making it through {{ka|Victory Road}} and finally to the Indigo Plateau, Red defeats the Elite Four and discovers, to his surprise, that Blue has defeated them before him and is the {{pkmn|Champion}}. Red defeats Blue in the final battle, becoming the Champion himself, but then continues his training, rather than staying at the Indigo Plateau. Encountering an offshoot of Team Rocket in the southern [[Sevii Islands]], Red reveals with his Earth Badge that Giovanni has disbanded the organization, and though defeated the group there intends to revive Team Rocket and bring Giovanni back, having already made plans to force Pokémon to evolve with radio waves. Red continues as a wandering Trainer, eventually making his way to the caves of [[Mt. Silver]], where he trains his Pokémon alone.

Eventually, {{ga|Gold}}, {{ga|Kris}} or {{ga|Lyra}} arrives at Mt. Silver and challenges Red, identified only as a [[Pokémon Trainer]]. Red vanishes from Mt. Silver, and returns every time the Elite Four is defeated again by the player of Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, or SoulSilver.

===Pokémon===
As the player character, Red can have on his team any of the 151 Pokémon available during [[Generation I]]. In [[Generation III]], he can have any of the 386 Pokémon available at that time, though only after the player has obtained the [[National Pokédex]].

When he is encountered as an opponent in [[Generation II]] and [[Generation IV]], Red has a set team, based on Generation I in-game event Pokémon, and has the highest leveled Pokémon yet encountered in the series, with his {{p|Pikachu}} at level 81 in Generation II and at level 88 in Generation IV.

Rather than fighting himself, like the other human characters, Red sends his three Pokémon into battle, switching between them in order. His home stages, like the other Pokémon characters in the game, are {{OBP|Pokémon Stadium|stage}}, {{OBP|Pokémon Stadium 2|stage}}, and {{OBP|Spear Pillar|stage}}. He is voiced by [[Michele Knotz]] in the English version and 半場友恵 ''[[Tomoe Hanba]]'' in the Japanese version.

In terms of gameplay, {{sbw|Squirtle}} is an agile and quick attacker, but it is somewhat weaker than the other two and is much more easily knocked back. {{sbw|Ivysaur}} is a good all-around fighter, but its attacks lack range and it has poor aerial ability. {{sbw|Charizard}} is the most difficult to knock away, and has excellent recovery, but its attacks are slow, albeit powerful.

The Pokémon Trainer is first encountered by {{wb|Lucas}} in the Ruined Zoo. For most of the game, the two are paired together. Pokémon Trainer's mission is to capture Charizard and Ivysaur while Lucas's is to save {{wb|Ness}}. On their way to {{sbw|the Ruins}}, the two are ambushed by {{smw|Wario}}, who is eventually defeated by the two. Later in {{sbw|The Ruined Hall}}, they are attacked by {{sbw|Galleom}}. Once defeated, it sets off a time bomb. Lucas saves Pokémon Trainer and they are then both saved by {{wk|Meta Knight}} who carries them away from the explosion, which sucks up Wario's trophy into Subspace. From then on the two join Meta Knight, {{sbw|Marth}}, and {{sbw|Ike}} on their quest to take down the {{sbw|Subspace Army}}.

Red makes an appearance in both [[Pokémon Colosseum]] and [[Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness]]. While he does not appear in the games' Story Mode, he is playable in the Battle Mode when a FireRed or LeafGreen cartridge is used, with a male player character chosen. He can take on the Mt. Battle's 100-battle challenge, as well as compete in Colosseum battles. Red also made a brief appearence in the debut trailer of [[Pokémon Battle Revolution]], having a [[double battle]] against [[Leaf]], using a {{p|Deoxys}} on its Attack Forme and a {{p|Wailord}}. Despite this, he didn't appear in the final cut of the game.

While Red himself does not appear in the anime, his counterpart, introduced in the [[EP001|first episode]], is the anime's main character, Ash Ketchum. Like Red, Ash is from Pallet Town, on a journey to become a Pokémon Master. Unlike Red, Ash's journey did not end with Kanto, and Ash has continued through every other region introduced in the [[main series]] games, as well as the [[Orange Archipelago]] south of Kanto, taking the place of the player characters of Generation II during Johto, and being joined by the anime counterparts of {{ga|May}} and {{ga|Dawn}} during the Hoenn and Sinnoh sagas. Instead of starting with one of the standard three Kanto starters, however, Ash began his journey with a {{AP|Pikachu}}, inspiring {{game|Yellow}}'s creation, as well as causing some to consider Red and Ash to be the same person, most especially due to Red owning {{ga|Red's Pikachu|one}} as well.

Red, like most player characters, also has counterparts in the various Pokémon manga, with {{adv|Red}} from the [[Pokémon Adventures]] manga, {{Zensho|Satoshi}} from [[Pokémon Zensho]] manga, [[Isamu Akai]] from [[Pokémon Pocket Monsters]] manga, and [[Shū]] from [[Pokémon Get da ze!]] manga being among them.

* When Red is encountered in [[Mt. Silver]] during [[Generation II]], he has no speech, merely repeating an ellipsis before beginning the battle. This is a reference to the fact that during [[Generation I]] he is a silent protagonist, answering only "yes" or "no" questions. He also remains silent when confronted in [[Generation IV]].
**Ironically, in {{2v2|FireRed|LeafGreen}}, {{ga|Blue}} calls him a ''chatty gossip''. However, this is probably sarcasm.
