Really? He looked a couple years older than Ash in the anime, by two or three. But age is so hard to measure in Pokemon anyways. The kids look older than they should, and the adults tend to look younger than they should. It's just an opinion, though. *shrugs* He does look around 15 in the manga, though.
I just watched the episode again, in the French dub and when A.J. explains the way he trains his pokémon, in it he mentions that he catches wild pokemon and trains them...
Makes one wonder how else one catches pokemon then, heh. Also to be noted in the early episodes, Ash catches very few pokemon by actual combat...

Red!: /* How to Breed */ Add a third pair and still count only 2?

How to Breed
Pokémon can be breed by leaving two compatible Pokémon at the Pokémon Daycare in Generation II and Generation III. Two Pokémon are compatible if they are of opposite gender, share one Egg Group (see below), or one of them is Ditto. Legendary and baby Pokémon cannot breed. Pokémon with gender unknown can only breed with Ditto. After returning to the Daycare, the old man will be outside (Generation II) or out of line with the fence (Generation III). The man will hand you an egg. After walking around for a while, the egg should hatch into a level 5 version of the bottom of the female's evolutionary chain.

Examples:

+  =

♀ + ♂ =

However, there are three pairs of Pokémon species where the male and female are treated as different Pokémon. In these cases, the egg may hatch into either the male or female species:

#Nidoran♀ and Nidoran♂
#Illumise and Volbeat
#Miltank and Tauros

Passing Moves Down
The moves obtained by a Pokémon when hatching are as follows:
#The Pokémon will start with any moves that it would learn at a level of 5 or lower.
#The Pokémon will start with any moves that it would learn by leveling up only if both parents know the move.
#The Pokémon will start with any TM or HM moves that the father knows and the baby can also learn by machine.
#The Pokémon will start with any Egg Moves that the baby can learn and the father knows.
The moves will take precedence in the order listed, and if there are more then four moves to learn, the moves will start being knocked off much like at the Pokémon Daycare.

Inheriting Stats
A Pokémon's Individual Values are also passed down. This is determined differently between Generation II and III games.

Generation II
In Generation II games, the baby inherited its stats from the parent of the opposite gender, unless one parent was Ditto, and in that case it would inherited from Ditto. The Defense Individual Value is passed, and also either the Special Individual Value, or the Special plus or minus 8, depending on whither it was origianally greater or less than 8. Whether Special changed or not is determined at random. Attack and Speed are determined at random.

When determining if two Pokémon are compatable, if the Defense Individual Values are the same, and the Special is the same, or 8 off, they are incompatable. This means they are related, and no egg will be produced.

Generation III
In these games, three of the baby's Individual Values are inherited from either parent, the other three are determined at random.

In Pokémon Emerald, if the mother (or Ditto) is holding an Everstone the baby will inherit that Pokémon's Nature.
** MAX STATS **

To convert the base stats listed in this document to the maximum, use these
formulae and round down to the nearest whole number:

Max HP = (Level x (Base + 15 + (65535 / 2048) + 50) / 50) + 10
Others = (Level x (Base + 15 + (65535 / 2048)) / 50) + 5

At level 100, one base point is equivalent to two max points. HP starts from
203, while the other stats start from 98. This means that a base of 100 will
give a maximum of 403 HP (100 x 2 + 203) and 298 Attack/Defense/Speed/Specials
(100 x 2 + 98).  All of Mew's and Celebi's stats are at this level.
** MAX STATS **

To convert the base stats listed in this document to the maximum, use these
formulae, rounding down to the nearest whole number after each step:

Max HP = ((Level x ((Base x 2) + 31 + (255 / 4))) / 100) + 10 + Level
Others = (((Level x ((Base x 2) + 31 + (255 / 4))) / 100) + 5) * Personality

At level 100, one base point is equivalent to two max points. HP starts from
204, while the other stats start from 99. This means that a base of 100 will
give a maximum of 404 HP (100 x 2 + 204) and 299 Attack/Defense/Speed/Specials
(100 x 2 + 99).  All of Mew's, Celebi's, and Jirachi's stats are at this level.

Personality modifiers may increase or decrease the non-HP stats by 10% each.

Game-specific notes
Generation I
<!--in rby they don't do a damn thing besides determining stats-->

Generation II
<!-- Note: for the DC determining mentioned below, also mention that the Pokémon has to be at level 100 and have maximum EVs-->

Gold, Silver, and Crystal introduced the first major use of DVs beyond stats; they determine Hidden Power type, whether or not the Pokémon has alternate coloring, gender, among other things. In GSC, a DV is a number between 0 and 15, inclusive, that is randomly picked the first time you see a Pokémon. You can figure out DVs by figuring out the maximum and minimum possible stats, and figuring out how far off your stat is. For every 2 points off the max stat, subtract 1 DV point. The highest DV is 15, so a perfect Pokémon would have all DV's of 15. Note that the Box trick may be useful in figuring out your actual DVs. There are DVs for 5 stats: Attack, Defense, Speed, Special, and HP. The Special DV works for both Special Attack and Special Defense, in GSC.

For instance, a Dragonite, whose max attack is 366, has an attack of 360. That’s 6 off the max stat, so you’d subtract 3 from 15, which is a 12. Therefore, your Dragonite’s attack DV is 12.

This can be repeated for all stats except HP. The HP DV is determined by the DVs of the other stats, as follows:
* If a Pokémon’s attack DV is odd, add 8 to the HP DV.
* If a Pokémon’s defense DV is odd, add 4 to the HP DV.
* If a Pokémon’s speed DV is odd, add 2 to the HP DV.
* If a Pokémon’s special DV is odd, add 1 to the HP DV.

A Shiny Pokémon’s DV’s are as follows:
* Attack: 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14 or 15
* Defense: 10
* Speed: 10
* Special: 10
* HP: 0 or 8

If the attack DV is 2, 6, 10, or 14, the HP DV will be 0. If the attack DV is 3, 7, 11, or 15, the HP DV will be 8. All of the other DVs are always the same - A shiny will never have a DV other than 10 in Defense, Speed, or Special categories.

Also, all Shiny Pokémon will have either a Grass or a Dragon Hidden Power when taught TM 10, Hidden Power.

DVs determine gender as well; whatever the gender percentage is corresponds to an attack DV. Males have DVs higher than that percent, and females lower. i.e., with 50% chance of being male in a species, a DV of 8 or above in attack will yield a male; 7 or below yields a female. When a species is 87.5% male, only a 0, 1, or 2 Attack DV yields a female.

Generation III
DVs here range from 0 to 31 per stat. For each Pokémon, they are stored as a packed bitfield and take up a doubleword and are thus harder to change individually.

<pre>
(MSB) Blank SP.DF SP.AK SPEED DEF ATK HP (LSB)

00    11111 11111 11111 11111 11111 11111
</pre>

HP now has it's own value while alternate coloration and gender are now determined by the personality value instead of a calculation made on the other values. The only remaining thing dependant on them is the actual move of the Hidden Power.

Usually, a Pokémon gains stat points when they level up, based on the amount of effort points that the Pokémon has acquired through battle, and based on it's own base stats. But by depositing a Pokémon into your PC and withdrawing it, the game will, in the process of depositing\withdrawing, recalculate the stats of your Pokémon based on the amount of effort points etc. it possesses.
Ivysaur evolves from Bulbasaur starting at Level 16, and evolves into Venusaur starting at Level 32.
Name origin
Ivysaur's name is a combination of the words ivy and saur, which is Greek for lizard. Its Japanese name can be taken to mean it seems strange, or 不思議 草 fushigi sou strange grass. The French name is a combination of herb or more probably grass, and bizzare sharing likeness with lizard.

Dinosaur names often have saur suffixed, and Ivysaur appears dinosaur-like.
Blissey (Japanese: ハピナス Happinas; German: Heiteira; French: Leuphorie) is a Normal-type Pokémon. It evolves from Chansey.
: If it senses sadness with its fluffy fur, a Blissey will rush over to the sad person, however far away, to share an egg of happiness that brings a smile to any face.

Name origin
Blissey's name is a combination of bliss, as in happiness, and chancey, referring to luck. Its Japanese name may be a combination of happiness and nurse. The French name is seemingly a corruption of euphoria.

It may be based on a nurse. Design-wise, it appears to have some physical similarities to Nurse Joy from the anime in both color and hair.
Methods of Evolution

Red!: /* By trading with an item */ typos, wiki'd

There are a number of methods of evolution, which defines how and when a Pokémon evolves. These can make it slightly harder for some Pokémon to evolve in comparison to others.

By level
Most evolution happens by a Pokémon achieving a certain level. A Pokémon earns levels by gaining experience points from a battle. A detailed explanation on how experience points work is listed under the "Experience" page.

A Rare Candy can make a Pokémon instantly gain a level, potentially getting the Pokémon one step closer to evolving. If a Rare Candy is used to move a Pokémon to the level at which it would evolve through Experience alone, the Pokémon will evolve; level-based evolution is not discriminatory with respect to how a Pokémon attains its level.

A few exceptions to this method include the Pokémon Daycare and using an Everstone. Pokémon will not evolve regardless of level in the daycare or by using an Everstone. Therefore, it is safe to say that, for the game's purposes, only Pokémon in a trainer's Active party will evolve, if they are not holding an Everstone.

Level evolution is not limited to the normal level at which Pokémon evolve. A Pokémon will try to evolve if it is allowed to at higher levels.

Example: Ekans evolves into Arbok at <b>level 22</b>.

By evolutionary stone
Some Pokémon will only evolve after being exposed to an evolutionary stone.

If a Pokémon's next stage requires the use of a stone, then it can be applied at any time, this causing instant evolution.

However, once exposed to an element stone, most Pokémon can no longer learn any more moves by leveling up. There are exceptions to this rule, however, and certain moves are exclusive to the stone-evolved Pokémon.

Example: Nidorino evolves into Nidoking by being exposed to a Moon Stone.

By trading
Some species can only be gotten by being traded to another trainer, as soon as a Pokémon is transferred the evolution process immediately begins. The trade may be facilitated by either a link cable or wireless adapter, or an in-game trade between the player and a non-player character.

A famous glitch in the Generation I games suggested that after trading a woman a Raichu, she said that it had evolved. This fueled speculation as to whether or not there would be a third stage to the Pikachu line in Generation II; the third stage was realized in the form of a Baby Pokémon, Pichu.

Example: Graveler evolves into Golem by being traded.

By trading with an item
In the case of some species, it is not enough just to trade them. They must also be given a particular item to hold.

This was introduced in Generation II when some already existing Pokémon were given new evolutionary forms.

Example: Onix evolves into Steelix by being traded when it is holding a Metal Coat.

By happiness
There comes a time when the only way for a Pokémon to evolve is through making it especially happy. This is usually true for baby Pokémon such as Cleffa, but also holds true for some other Pokémon, including Chansey (evolves to Blissey).

Once a Pokémon's hidden happiness stat hits 220, it will evolve on the next level-up.

Example: Golbat evolves into Crobat through being happy.

Others
By Beauty
A single Pokémon makes use of a condition stat, the beauty stat. That Pokémon is Feebas. After its beauty stat reaches 170 and the Pokémon gains an additional level, it will evolve into a Milotic.

By Attack & Defense
Tyrogue has an odd three-way branched evolution depending on its stats when it reaches level 20.

*Evolves into Hitmonchan if defence is higher than attack.
*Evolves into Hitmonlee if attack is higher than defence.
*Evolves into Hitmontop if defence is equal to attack.

By Personality Value
Wurmple's evolution into either Cascoon or Silcoon is based on its personality value, which is dictated when the Wurmple is caught.

By Empty Slot & Poké Ball
The method of receiving a Shedinja is perhaps the oddest form of evolution, to the point that it can scarely be called an evolution. Once a Nincada reaches level 20 it will evolve into a Ninjask, however, if the player has a free party slot and an extra Poké Ball in his/her bag at the time, a Shedinja will fill that slot upon Nincada's evolution.

By Time & Tameness
Also, Espeon and Umbreon will evolve depending on the in-game clock. The Eevee it evolves from evolves by happiness.
; Pokémon Emerald
Name origin
Spinarak's name is a combination of spinneret, which is where a spider excretes silk, and arachnid. Itomaru could be a combination of 糸 ito, thread, and 丸 maru, circle. The French corruption seems to mean half-tarantula.

In particular, Spinarak shares coloring and appearance with the "Happy Face Spider," an arachnid from Hawaii that seems to have a face on its abdomen.

; Pokémon Emerald
: Its fluffy wool rubs together and builds a static charge. The more energy is charged, the more brightly the lightbulb at the tip of its tail glows.

Name origin
Mareep's name appears to be a combination of the word Mary &mdash; as in the girl who owned a little lamb in the nursery rhyme &mdash; and sheep. The French meaning is corruption of Cotton Watt. It's also a fun play on words since Watt and ouat are pronounced exactly the same way.

It appears to be simply based on a sheep, although it might borrow its electric aspect from the way wool builds up static charges.

Pokédex entries
; Pokémon Gold / Pokémon LeafGreen
: If static electricity builds in its body, its fleece doubles in volume. Touching it will shock you.

; Pokémon Crystal
: It stores lots of air in its soft fur, allowing it to stay cool in summer and warm in winter.

; Pokémon Emerald
: Its fluffy wool rubs together and builds a static charge. The more energy is charged, the more brightly the lightbulb at the tip of its tail glows.

Name origin
Mareep's name appears to be a combination of the word Mary &mdash; as in the girl who owned a little lamb in the nursery rhyme &mdash; and sheep.
It appears to be simply based on a sheep, although it might borrow its electric aspect from the way wool builds up static charges.

The French meaning is corruption of Cotton Watt. It's also a fun play on words since Watt and ouat are pronounced exactly the same way.
Bellossom's name is a combination of bell, referring to the fact that the petals of its skirt make ringing noises, and blossom. Its Japanese name is a combination of 奇麗 kirei, pretty, and 花 hana, flower. Bellossom's German name looks like a corruption of blue bell, which is ironic due to the fact that Bellossom is normally green. The French name seems to be a corruption of nice flower.

Bellossom may be based on a hula dancer.
Yes, you can see what it looks like in Fr/Lg (and probably emerald too). Also, is it ok to add items one by one, or should they be added section by section?
I think this list should stay, but I don’t see the harm in each item having its own page, too, with pictures and in-depth info. The whole point of the Bulbapedia is to fully explain every aspect of Pokémon. I mean, moves get their own pages. -- WikidSmaht
>Most definately. The Amulet Coin reappears in Gen III. In Hoenn you can get it from your mom. I think you may be able to get it in other versions two, but I'm not sure of the exact location. Speaking of which, shouldn't we list the locations of these items somewhere?
Effort yield
empty SDF SAK SPD DEF ATK HP
</pre>

Items
Items in the first &quot;slot&quot; have a 50% probability of being on the Pokémon, while 5% in the second &quot;slot&quot;. If it'ts the same item in both then it's up to 100%.

Egg Groups
This determines with which type of Pokémon the Pokémon can breed to get eggs. See Egg groups. These are the direct values of the groups:

{| style="border: 1px solid #88a; padding: 0.5em;" cellspacing="3"
|15. Dragon
|16. No Egg

Colors
Colors don't really affect any part of the game mechanics; though the MSB bit is set on some pokémon.
Here is the list of the values and their relating colors:
