Blurb
<i>When researchers discover and exploit a fossil of the Mythical Pokémon Mew, they unleash a creation that goes against the very laws of nature: Mewtwo, a Legendary Pokémon intended for use as a tool of destruction. But as Mewtwo becomes aware of its own dubious origin, it begins to resent its human creators and seeks revenge—and Ash, Pikachu, and their friends find themselves at the center of its rampage! With the future of the Pokémon world at stake, will our heroes be able to overcome Mewtwo’s challenge…and will Mewtwo be able to find a new meaning for its life?</i>

Plot
Leading his expedition team of Scientists through a dense jungle, Dr. Fuji is looking for the thought to be extinct Mythical Pokémon Mew. The team locate an ancient ruin featuring carving of Mew. A sudden shadow passes, none other than Mew, but it quickly disappears as the Scientists turn around. Later, the group have managed to excavate a Fossil, which they believe belong to Mew. Dr. Fuji concludes the expedition, suggesting they return to the laboratory to conduct further analysis. Mew peeks into the tent out of curiosity before soaring off into the distance.

The newly created Mewtwo is still developing its consciousness. In its daze, it dreams of Mew guiding it through a crystal clear river and soaring off towards a mountain. Mewtwo finds itself in unfamiliar surrounds, but is certain that the scenery is important. It soon awakens to find itself trapped, and uses its Psychic powers to free itself of its glass capsule. Dr. Fuji and his team rush over to welcome their creation, dubbed "Mewtwo", to the world. The scientists are impressed by Mewtwo's already promising abilities including telepathy. Dr. Fuji explains to Mewtwo that is was created from the world's most rare Pokémon, Mew, but it is far stronger than its progenitor. Mewtwo is in disbelief that it was created by humans and grows angry at seeing their selfishness. Mewtwo reflects on its dream and wonders about its true identity. In retaliation Mewtwo overwhelms the scientists and their restrictive technology with its Psychic powers. Soon flames consume the New Island laboratory before Mewtwo finally unleashes a series of explosions to destroy it entirely.

Commissioner of the entire scientific operation, Team Rocket Boss Giovanni flies to New Island. After witnessing the carnage afar, he approaches and convinces Mewtwo to work with him to hone its powers. Giovanni places Mewtwo into a suit of armor, to help Mewtwo harness its power. In a series of tasks, Mewtwo's powers are put to the test. It assists Giovanni and Team Rocket in capturing rare Pokémon like Tauros, as well as being pitted against challengers at the Viridian Gym. Mewtwo continues to questions it purpose and reason for living. Finally Giovanni offers Mewtwo its long-awaited answers; it is a Pokémon which is supposed to serve him. After Mewtwo learns of its purpose to be a weapon for Giovanni's benefit, it destroys its suppressive armor. It escapes Team Rocket HQ and heads back to New Island where it plots its revenge against humanity.

After Mewtwo rebuilds the laboratory and establishes a base there, it invites several Trainers with hologram messages to battle the world's greatest Pokémon Trainer at New Island. Watching from his spy, a Fearow armed with a camera, Ash's battle performance against Raymond also intrigues Mewtwo. Bulbasaur defeats Raymond's Donphan with a Solar Beam, while Squirtle's Bubble Beam overwhelms a Machamp. Pikachu is then pitted against three opponents all at once, but emerges victorious with a devastating Thunderbolt. Also spying, TRT plot their next attempt to capture Pikachu. Following the match, Ash sits down with ashfr to each enjoy a lunch prepared by Brock. Following Mewtwo's orders, its Dragonite delivers a hologram message to Ash. Brock is instantly enchanted with the hologram woman, while Ash is more excited about a chance to face the world's greatest Pokémon Trainer. After checking the invite box, Dragonite prepares to fly. However, Team Rocket have other ideas, and stop it from leaving with their frying pan. An invite slips from Dragonite's satchel, intriguing the trio.

In preparation for the main event, Mewtwo creates a powerful thunderstorm and whips up the seas. The massive disturbance also captures Mew's attention, who soon leaves for New Island. Ash and his friends soon arrive at Old Shore Wharf, the departure point to reach new Island. Inside the departures lounge many other Trainers and their equally anxious Pokémon are waiting to leave. However the storm means no ships can disembark the port. Officer Jenny and harbor manager Miranda try to maintain the peace and remind the Trainers of the stormy conditions. Miranda reiterates that she has never seen such a storm. However Fergus steps up and decides he'll just use his Pokémon to reach New Island. Jenny and Miranda protest, revealing the onsite Pokémon Center is currently unattended, so no Pokémon can be treated for their injuries. Jenny reveals that the Nurse Joy has been missing for a week, and brings everyone's attention to the missing poster. Brock inspects the poster closely and is startled by the seemingly familiar Nurse Joy. Despite the warning, several Trainers leave for New Island using their Pokémon. Miranda admits that stopping any Pokémon Trainer is futile, as they are courageous adventurer by nature.

Ash is equally determined to reach New Island, though Misty reminds him that they're Pokémon aren't strong enough to make the crossing. Luckily, Team Rocket, disguised as sailors, offer the group a ride in their Lapras-shaped boat. After pedalling through the giant waves, Meowth activates the vessel's motor, which speeds up the voyage. However, the boat goes directly into a wave, dragging everyone underwater. Team Rocket's disguises are also washed off by the current, cuasing panic for the group. As another wave throws the boat high into the air, everyone is thrown out to sea. Misty calls out her Misty to help her and Brock through the waves, while Ash has Squirtle. The Water types cruise through the water with ease, dodging oncoming rocks before finally arriving at their destination, New Island.

At the pier, the female attendant greets the group. At her request, Ash shows the attendant his personal invite for verification. Brock instantly recognized the attendant as the missing Nurse Joy from Old Shore Wharf, Misty admits she can see the resemblance, while Ash cannot see it. The attendant replies that she has been at the castle for a long time, dismissing the comment. As the attendant leads the group to their venue, Team Rocket also arrive thanks to James's Weezing and Mew as well.

Arriving at a large entrance, the attendant leads Ash, Misty and Brock inside to meet the other Trainers. The group are surprised to see only three other Trainers, while the attendant explains that they were the only ones strong enough to make the crossing. Brock wonders if the storm was a test, however the attendant simply asks the group to call out their Pokémon before taking their seats. As the entrance doors seal shut, Team Rocket are forced to look for another way inside – via the sewer pipes. Meanwhile, Ash calls out his Squirtle and Bulbasaur, Brock sends out Brock while Misty's Togepi and Misty also join them. Corey is first to greet them, revealing he arrived with the help of his Pidgeot before showing off his other Pokémon. Fergus presents his collection of Water Pokémon. Brock instantly gravitates to Neesha, declaring that he will amaze her with his culinary skills, though Misty quickly pulls Brock away by the ear.

The lights suddenly dim and Mewtwo makes a grand entrance, floating down the castle's double-helix staircase to greet its guests. The attendant reveals that this is the world's greatest Trainer and Pokémon, Mewtwo. Fergus is outraged and declares that a Pokémon cannot be a Trainer. Using telepathy, Mewtwo has its attendant speak for it. Fergus protests, so Mewtwo uses its Psychic powers to toss him into the pool. Undeterred, Fergus orders his Gyarados attack with Hyper Beam. Mewtwo deflects the attack back at Gyarados, knocking it back into the pool. Mewtwo also releases his attendant from its Psychic manipulation, which also confirms Brock's suspicions that she is the missing Nurse Joy. Mewtwo explains that he required Nurse Joy for her specialized Pokémon knowledge, and she will have no memory of the events.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket have wandered into Mewtwo's hidden cloning laboratory. They spot clones of Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise, but are still unaware of their strange surrounds. Jessie accidentally leans on one of the control panels, which activates a video file that details the clone project that led to Mewtwo's creation. Some mechanical claws suddenly pick Meowth up, throwing him onto a conveyor belt. James rushes over and grabs Meowth while the machine plucks several tail hairs. While Meowth nurses his injured tail, a digital display appears as Meowth is cloned. The clone is beamed down the expandable tubing and left to mature. Team Rocket return their attention to the screen, learning that Mewtwo is the clone of Mew. The trio come to the conclusion that they have discovered a clone laboratory, but find it odd that it is unattended.

Back in the foyer, Mewtwo explains that the world and Pokémon are ruled by humans, which is problematic because people are inherently controlling. Pikachu leaps off Ash's shoulder to rebute such comments, and he explains that humans and Pokémon form friendships. Mewtwo is disgusted by such feelings and telepathically tosses Pikachu aside, only for Ash to break his fall. Corey steps up, calling for his Rhyhorn to attack. Mewtwo defends itself by sending Rhyhorn flying across the banquet table. Mewtwo claims to be the strongest Pokémon, and Ash suggests it prove itself. Mewtwo gladly accepts, activating its waiting clones, Blastoise, Venusaur and Charizard. In the laboratory, Team Rocket watch in shock and are even more surprised when Mew follows the clones out as well.

The lights dim yet again before revealing Mewtwo's personal battle stadium. Corey, Neesha and Ash take up Mewtwo's challenge, calling on their own Venusaur, Blastoise and Charizard to face the clones. Ash's Charizard yawns as it emerges from its Poké Ball, attacking Mewtwo with an impromptu Flamethrower. Mewtwo blocks the attack and informs Ash that Charizard is particularly ill-mannered. Everyone makes their way over to the stadium, though Mewtwo's clone trio emerge victorious over their respective opponents. Mewtwo proceeds to catch Bruteroot, Shellshocker and Ash's Charizard in its own special Mewtwo Balls. Misty wonders what Mewtwo's intentions of "stealing" other people's Pokémon could be, and Mewtwo insists it plans to create an army of superior copies. Ash orders Mewtwo to stop, though Mewtwo reiterates that it makes the rules and pushes Ash away with its Psychic powers. Mewtwo summons more Balls, sending everyone into a panic as they try to save their Pokémon from being caught. Fergus's Pokémon are all captured with ease, follows by most of Corey's and Neesha's teams. Corey's Pidgeot tries to out-speed the Balls, but is also caught. Ash recalls Bulbasaur and Squirtle to their Poké Balls, but this also proves useless as they are taken as well. Misty's Togepi goes undetected as it shelters in Misty's knit bag, while Psyduck is caught. Brock and Nurse Joy reach the doors, though Vulpix is soon taken. Pikachu remains the last standing, but he is also captured while trying to escape up the spiral staircase. Ash leaps for Pikachu, and grips onto the Ball, but it manages to get away. Ash, however, does slide down one of the hidden entrances as it carried off with the Mewtwo Balls into the cloning laboratory. There, Team Rocket watch as more Pokémon are cloned. Also on the conveyor belt, Ash, who explains that he has no time to deal with them rushes into the machine to save Pikachu, though he is still cloned like the other Pokémon. Ash wrestles with the machine's mechanical arms, causing it to spark as he manages to rescue Pikachu. Pikachu emerges from the Ball unscathed and happily leaps into Ash's embrace. Soon the newly cloned Pokémon emerge from their chambers and proceed towards the stadium. The cloning machine suddenly explodes, releasing all of the captured original Pokémon from the Mewtwo Balls. Ash is reunited with Squirtle, Bulbasaur and Charizard as well.

Mewtwo assures the humans it has no intention of harming them. It even offers them the chance to leave, however with the storm still raging, no one considers it an option. An explosion occurs, and the cloned Pokémon proceed to join Mewtwo's side. Ash, leading the originals, follows closely behind much to the relief of the others. Ash declares that he will protect his Pokémon and proceeds to charge ahead. Mewtwo protects itself from the blows before tossing Ash into the distance. However a pink bubble protects Ash from crashing into one of the spires, and Mew reveals itself to everyone. Mewtwo instantly recognizes Mew. However Mew is too busy playing around with Ash, though Mewtwo bursts its bubble to get its attention. Mewtwo declares that it is the mightiest Pokémon, in spite of being created from Mew. Mewtwo proceeds to attack, sending Mew to flee. After a pursuit and Mewtwo finally striking Mew, the Mythical Pokémon retaliates with an attack.

Mewtwo is determined to settle who is better, its superior copies or the originals. Meowth translates the interaction between Mew and Mewtwo for his teammates, with Mew siding with the originals. Mewtwo suggests they determine who is stronger with a battle of pure strengths, and promptly blocks both sides' attacks and abilities. While Mew and Mewtwo exchange blows, the Pokémon find their respective clone and a brutal battle unfolds leaving both sides battered and exhausted. Meowth's clone, meanwhile, is able to be convinced not to fight by Meowth himself. The two Meowth realize they have a lot more in common aside from their differences. Ash's Pikachu is determined not to fight his clone, but the other Pikachu is unconvinced despite the toll. Nurse Joy and the Trainers are all shocked by the unrelenting brutality, so Ash steps up to confront Mewtwo and put an end to it.

Mew and Mewtwo prepare to exchange devastating blows, Ash rushes between them to intervene. The attacks hit, and consequently turn Ash to stone. Mewtwo is taken aback that a human would try to stop the battle. As Ash lie motionless, Pikachu rushes over to check on his Trainer, but he is unresponsive. Pikachu tries one Thunderbolt after another, but his attempts are all in vain. Pikachu begins to tear up and cry aloud, fearing his Trainer is now gone. The other Pokémon are also drawn to tears by this, and the cumulative effect brings Ash back to life. Ash's kind heart helps all the Pokémon realize their wrongs.

Mewtwo also comes to a new conclusion, that it also has a place in the world, just like Mew. Mewtwo decides that it is best that no one know of the events that unfolded. Mewtwo, together with Mew, promptly carries off the clone Pokémon to a place where they can live in peace and belong. It also wipes everyone else's memories and returns them to Old Shore Wharf.

Officer Jenny and Miranda again tell the Trainers that all ships to New Island have been cancelled because of the storm. This time however, Nurse Joy assures the Trainers that the Center is open for business and can be used as a refuge in the meantime. Ash cannot understand where they are, and Misty replies that they are just there. The storm suddenly clears, so the Trainers all step out to look at the ocean. Miranda is surprised by the quick turnaround of events, adding it is like the storm never happened. Ash then spots something in the sky, none other than Mew, though Misty and Brock say that they can't see anything besides the clouds. Ash admits he saw a Ho-Oh the day he left on his journey to become a Pokémon Master. His friends add that maybe he will get to meet others in the future, and Ash agrees.

Meanwhile, still on New Island, which is now lush and green, the Team Rocket trio admit it is nice to have the island to themselves.

Later, Mewtwo and the clones approach the isolated Mount Quena in the Johto region.

Trivia
* This movie was released between SM129 and SM130 in Japan.
* This movie is co-directed by Kunihiko Yuyama and Motonori Sakakibara, with the former returning after the previous movie was directed by Tetsuo Yajima. This subsequently makes this the first movie to be directed by two people as opposed to one.
* Takeshi Shudō received a posthumous credit for this movie's screenplay.
* The first poster for the movie is similar to the original teaser poster for Mewtwo Strikes Back.
* This is one of two Pokémon-related movies to be released in 2019, with the other being the live-action Detective Pikachu movie. Coincidentally, both of them feature Mewtwo in a prominent role and heavily use CGI as opposed to 2D animation.
* Unshō Ishizuka's narration is posthumously featured in this movie. It was recorded in March 2018.
* This is the first Pokémon movie:
** To be animated completely in CGI.
** To be released in the Reiwa period.
** To be a remake of a prior movie.
** To feature Misty and Brock in main roles since Pokémon Heroes: Latios & Latias and Zoroark: Master of Illusions, seventeen and nine years earlier, respectively.
** To not be broadcast on television in the United States in the same year as in Japan since Zoroark: Master of Illusions.
** To not feature any Pokémon from the concurrent generation.
** To not debut any new Pokémon in the anime since Genesect and the Legend Awakened, nearly six years earlier. Coincidentally, both movies feature a Mewtwo.
** To not have an introductory title in its Japanese name, like 劇場版ポケットモンスター (Pokémon The Movie) or Pokémon The Movie.
** To internationally premiere on a streaming platform rather than premiere in theaters or on TV.
** To have an the Arab world dub. It is also the first form of animated Pokémon media to be dubbed into Arabic since the cancellation of the main series' Arabic dub after AG092.
* This is the last Pokémon movie to be dubbed by Media Services.

Differences from the original movie
section
* The laboratory where Mewtwo is born has a completely different design, with predominantly white colors.
* The entrance hall to Mewtwo's palace is slightly redesigned. Instead of the spiral staircase being positioned at the far end of the hall in front of the entrance to the arena, it is now in front of the front door. It also has two staircases forming a Nucleic acid double helix instead of a single staircase like in the original.
* Mewtwo's armor has a different design. It frequently moves along with Mewtwo in combat and can also act as a restraint should it rebel. Giovanni activates this feature before Mewtwo escapes the Team Rocket HQ, but it fails to stop Mewtwo.
* Several characters have their designs altered from the original movie.
** Giovanni wears a darker suit in this movie, instead of the bright orange suit that he wore prior to Pokémon the Series: Black & White.
** Raymond's skin color is darkened and his hairstyle is changed to give him dreadlocks, while his coat, pants, and bandanna are altered to give him a more traditional pirate-like look. He is also given gloves, which he did not have in the original movie.
** Corey's jacket is changed to feature two emblems on its chest instead of one. The left emblem features a sword and the right a shield, likely a reference to Pokémon Sword and Shield.
* A new scene is added in which Giovanni presents Mewtwo to an army of Team Rocket members in a vast hall after its armor is equipped.
* Giovanni is not on the ground with the Team Rocket Grunts as they capture the herd of Tauros. Instead, he is observing overhead from his helicopter.
* Mewtwo isn't shown battling an Alakazam or a Magneton as part of Giovanni's duties in the Viridian Gym.
* Raymond's Golem is replaced by a Drowzee, in the process eliminating the error present in Mewtwo Strikes Back, where Pikachu manages to knock out the part Ground with a Thunderbolt.
* Ash's Charizard, Misty's Psyduck, and Brock's Vulpix all appear earlier in the movie, during the lunch scene.
* Charizard is added into most of the scenes alongside Squirtle and Bulbasaur and responds positively to Ash in all of them. The original movie took place in conjunction with the anime's continuity, and therefore, Charizard would still be disobedient at the time. Those behaviors have been mostly erased in this movie, presumably to avoid confusion to newer viewers, with the closest thing to a hint at its original disobedient nature being Charizard preemptively trying to attack Dragonite and Mewtwo without Ash's permission.
* Ash's Charizard attacks using Flamethrower on Dragonite when it lands.
* In addition to the unknown Trainer attempting to reach New Island on a Fearow, two more Trainers attempt the journey surfing on a Kingler and flying on a Scyther.
* Misty reacts with excitement to Fergus' Vaporeon and other Water Pokémon, and she rushes to greet them until Gyarados emerges. An exchange between Ash and Fergus about Gyarados is also added.
* Both Bruteroot and Shellshocker last longer in battle against the clone Venusaur and Blastoise. Bruteroot survives the initial Vine Whip attack and is knocked out by Leaf Storm, whereas Shellshocker is knocked out by the same Rapid Spin but after exchanging a head-on Skull Bash.
* Nurse Joy gives information about Ash, Misty, and Brock before she asks if they need to be invited. Mewtwo is also clearly depicted in this scene, whereas in the original he is obscured.
* TRT attempts to take Ash and his friends to New Island in a Lapras-shaped sailboat, with the Viking motif being eliminated entirely. Team Rocket also sing a song during this scene.
* Brock tries to flirt with Neesha and also notes his attraction to Miranda.
* A number of moves that were introduced in later generations, such as Energy Ball and Leaf Storm, are used in this movie.
* When Ash is petrified during the movie's climax, he turns to black stone instead of gray rock.
* The ending credits now feature paintings of Ash and his friends in different areas.
* A Generation III Pokémon, Wingull, appears in the movie's ending credits.
** Miranda also mentions Wingull earlier in the movie. This is an alteration of an existing line in the Japanese version of Mewtwo Strikes Back, where she refers to regular seagulls instead.
* The post-credits scene, which was previously a shot of Mew flying off into the mountains, now shows Mewtwo and the clones flying toward Mount Quena, foreshadowing Mewtwo Returns.
* Some of the music featured in the movie is remixed from preceding movies, including Black—Victini and Reshiram, Genesect and the Legend Awakened (which also starred a Mewtwo), Hoopa and the Clash of Ages, and Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel.
* While the dialogue is largely unchanged between the Japanese versions of both movies, the dialogue in this movie's English dub is mostly not based on the original movie's dub script, save for a few select lines, and is instead re-translated to be closer to the Japanese versions' scripts.
* Most of the 1990s era songs that play during the English dub of the movie, such as Brother, My Brother (which played as Ash first saw the clones and originals fighting en masse), are omitted and replaced with the movie's score. The exception to this is the cover of the Pokémon Theme that plays during the battle with Raymond, which is a fresh cover.
* The scene where Misty hides Togepi in her bag while Mewtwo is capturing the other Pokémon is made more obvious to the audience, as she tells it to "be very quiet in there". She also tells it to hide in her bag during the boat ride.
* Psyduck is captured while hiding behind a pillar instead of when it is running away with Misty and Brock.
* Nurse Joy and Brock try to open the door to escape, just before Vulpix is captured by Mewtwo.
* When Jessie accidentally activates the Pokémon replication system, Dr. Fuji's voice is heard explaining how the machine works. However, in the original movie's English dub, a feminine robotic voice is heard, with Dr. Fuji's voice speaking about Mewtwo's creation after Meowth's DNA had been extracted.
* Mew and Mewtwo don't use sphere barriers while they are attacking each other.

Errors
Dub edits
* Although Mewtwo's conversation towards Dr. Fuji regarding the nature of Mewtwo's existence is translated faithfully from the Japanese version, the English dub replaces the reference to God with "nature" to omit any religious references.
* Keep Evolving replaces Together With the Wind as the ending theme.
* In the original Japanese version, when Brock tries to show love to Neesha, he mentions making Onigiri. In the English dub, he calls them jelly doughnuts. This is likely a reference to the infamous dub edit from Primeape Goes Bananas.
* The sequence of Pikachu transitioning from a 2D image in a game window to jumping out and becoming 3D was removed in the English dub.
* In the original Japanese version, a researcher asks if Mew is a devil or an angel. In the English dub, he wonders if it is good or evil.
* In the original Japanese version, Raymond mentions that Ash got eight Badges. This isn't mentioned in the English dub.
* In the English dub, Nurse Joy implies that Ash, his friends, Neesha, Fergus, and Corey were invited. She doesn't make this implication in the original Japanese version.
* In the original Japanese version, as the Pokémon cry, only Pikachu's voice is heard. In the English dub, all of the other Pokémon's voices are heard.
<i>Just as Ash, Misty, and Tracey set foot on Mandarin Island, Pikachu and Togepi turn against them and join a group of other angry Pokémon. When the misbehaving Pokémon disappear, Officer Jenny arrives and informs them that dozens of Pokémon have been reported missing, including Meowth! Everyone fears a Psychic attack is behind this mystery. Will Jessie and James actually join forces with our heroes? Could they possibly win a battle for the first time?</i>

Plot
Continuing their adventures in the Orange Islands, Ash and ashfr have stopped off at Mandarin Island. After recalling Lapras, the trio hear a commotion, and notice a Grimer, Voltorb and four Magnemite attacking their Trainers. Eager to investigate, Ash and the others run to help. However, as Pikachu approaches, he stops. When Ash inquires as to what is wrong, Pikachu just glares at his master. Out of nowhere, Misty jumps out of Misty's arms and glares at its Trainer as well. Pikachu and Togepi then join the other Pokémon, while Voltorb Explosion, distracting Ash from rescuing his Pokémon. When the dust clears, Officer Jenny has arrived, but the Pokémon are gone.

At police headquarters, Jenny explains that for some time, Pokémon have all been disobeying their masters. The only Pokémon that doesn't appear to be affected by it is a Gastly. Jenny explains that she is hoping by using Gastly, they will be able to figure out what is going on. Ash and the others vow to help as well.

Meanwhile, TRT has arrived on the island. While Jessie and James want to go exploring, MTR becomes angry with them, saying they have important business to do. Suddenly, Meowth pauses. When Jessie and James ask him what is wrong, he takes off. Team Rocket follows Meowth, and end up in a large room. As they get up, they notice Butch and Cassidy looking at them. After both sides say their motto, Butch and Cassidy explain that they are stealing all the Pokémon on Mandarin Island for Giovanni. They present proof by showing all the Pokémon they have stolen so far, which includes Pikachu, Togepi and Meowth. Impressed, Jessie and James decide to steal the Pokémon Butch and Cassidy have taken.

Jessie sends out Jessie and Jessie, while James sends out James and James. While Victreebel bites on his head, Butch snaps his fingers. A Drowzee hooked up to a machine appears. As Jessie and James question about it, the Psychic begins using Hypnosis, causing all four of the Rocket's Pokémon to turn against them. Butch and Cassidy explain that they have Drowzee hooked up to an antenna which strengthens and broadcasts it's hypnotic power all across Mandarin Island, which has allowed them to take control of all the Pokémon on the island. Having revealed their plan, they decide to get rid of Jessie and James and set their own Pokémon (including Meowth) onto them.

Jessie and James are later found unconscious and taken to the Pokémon Center. When they awaken, they are with Officer Jenny, Ash and the others. After explaining that they witnessed Butch and Cassidy with all the stolen Pokémon, Ash tries to convince them to infiltrate their base again. The duo refuses, until Jenny convinces them that if they do this, they will be thought of as heroes. Liking this idea, Jessie and James agree to help out.

Looking through a surveillance camera, Butch and Cassidy see Jessie and James roll a large cart up to the entrance of their headquarters. It is filled with Poké Balls. Jessie and James tell the other Rockets that they would like to make peace, and have brought hundreds of Pokémon for them. Butch and Cassidy are skeptical, but let the duo in anyway. As they enter, Ash, Misty and Tracey jump out and demand Butch and Cassidy return the Pokémon. They refuse, saying that with the help of Drowzee, the Pokémon on Mandarin Island will do whatever they want them to do. Using Drowzee, they have all the Pokémon attack the Trainers. All the electric, fire and water types combine their attacks into a super-powered blast however Gastly protects them from it.

Suddenly, Ash gets an idea. After Pikachu ThunderShock him, he gets up, taunting Pikachu into launching another attack. This angers Pikachu, who tries again. Ash keeps dodging the attacks, all while taunting Pikachu. Everybody is confused as to what Ash is doing. As Gastly starts to weaken, Ash gets in front of the machine controlling Drowzee and taunts Pikachu into giving him everything he's got. Pikachu launches a massive ThunderShock, which strikes not only Ash, but the machine as well. As a result, it overloads and explodes, causing Drowzee to lose control of all the Pokémon.

Misty happily runs up to Togepi, who, upon seeing her, jumps into her arms. Ash, injured and tired, looks up to see Pikachu jump into his arms. The other Pokémon are released back onto the island, and run off to find their Trainers. However, Butch and Cassidy refuse to let Ash and the others leave. They challenge them to a battle, and Ash accepts. Using Drowzee, Butch and Cassidy are able to confuse Pikachu. Then, they have the Psychic-type use Metronome. Tracey comments this is trouble, as they don't know what move it will use. At the same time, nobody notices Togepi using Metronome as well. When it completes the move, an explosion sends Butch, Cassidy and Drowzee flying, and their headquarters destroyed.

After the duo is arrested, everyone wonders where the explosion came from. Many attribute it to Drowzee's Metronome having backfired on itself. Ash and friends then bid Mandarin Island farewell and head off on their next adventure.
** Pokémon senryū summary: Send them flying, with one punch, Hitmonchan.
* This is the first time the running gag of getting Butch's name wrong is used. In this case, James called him "Botch", a more-or-less accurate translation of コサンジ Kosanji.
* Tracey exclaims Who's That Pokémon? when he sees Drowzee.
* This is the first time Jessie's Lickitung was used since the episode in which it was caught over 30 episodes earlier.
* Both of Butch, Cassidy's, Jessie, and James's mottos are said at the exact same time in this episode.
** Although Cassidy claims that Jessie and James' version of the motto is incorrect, in The Breeding Center Secret Meowth claims that Butch and Cassidy stole the motto from them.
* Ash's Pikachu is referred to as a male in the dub. Shortly after Officer Jenny first arrives, just after the explosion, Ash says "You just gotta find him Officer Jenny!"
* This episode marks the first time Pikachu has been controlled by an evil organization.
* Jessie, James and Meowth do not blast off in this episode.

Errors
* At the beginning of the episode, four Magnemite are hypnotized by Drowzee. Later in the episode, only three Magnemite are hypnotized.
* At one point, James commands James, James and Jessie to use Tackle. However, Victreebel and Lickitung cannot legally learn the move in the games.
** Similarly, Ponyta used Flamethrower, despite that it was impossible to teach a Ponyta this move until Pokémon Crystal.
* In the dub, the Pokédex classifies Drowzee as the "Hypnotic Pokémon" whereas its actual classification in the games is the Hypnosis Pokémon.
Blurb
<!--http://www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-episodes/02_28-a-scare-in-the-air/-->
<i>Ash, Brock and Misty prepare for their long journey to Valencia Island to bring back a mysterious Poké Ball for Professor Oak. After discovering that the trip will take a month to get there, Ash manages to win a free blimp ride so it will take only a day! Once on board, they realize the blimp is being powered by Team Rocket! And things only get worse from there!</i>

Plot
As they prepare to depart for Valencia Island, Ash and ashfr pick up supplies at a grocery store. Ash suggests walking to the island, but Brock's guidebook says that it will only take less than a day traveling by blimp. While the blimp arrives, two men sponsor a contest where the winner gets a prize just by showing their store receipt to them. Ash shows his receipt, and wins a trip on the blimp. Unbeknownst to the kids, Jessie and James have received an assignment from Giovanni to operate the blimp.

Ash and the others reach the blimp yard and see a broken-down blimp. Two men approach them and ask if they are riding the blimp. They then say that the blimp is haunted and full of ghosts. At this point, Jessie and James enter the blimp.

Once on board, the group notices how deteriorated the blimp truly is. Meanwhile, MTR fixes dinner as Jessie and James act as waiters. During some turbulence, Ash complains about the ride, so Jessie and James ask Meowth who's flying the blimp. To their shock, no one is, so the pair desperately commandeer the blimp, but instead fly it into a big storm.

Suddenly, Misty notices that Misty is missing. They set out to find it, while TRT starts looking for the twerps. When Ash and the others reach the inflated portion of the blimp, they encounter what they believe to be a ghost, but it is actually revealed to be Jigglypuff.

Eventually, Ash and friends meet up with Team Rocket and begin a Pokémon battle. At one point, Brock's Geodude throws James's Weezing through the blimp, causing it to start ripping apart. Misty finally spots Togepi on a high ledge, so Ash has Bulbasaur try to grab Togepi from the ledge. Team Rocket take this opportunity and attempt to steal Pikachu, but their plan is thwarted when the blimp hits a pocket of turbulence, forcing them to fall out of the aircraft. Meowth makes a parachute from some of the blimp's fabric, but Jigglypuff lands on top of it and starts to sing. They fall asleep, and Meowth lets go of the fabric, causing the trio to fall into the ocean and drift away.

Ash and the others rush to control the blimp and try to land it. Using their Pokémon, they are able to steer the blimp and crash-land it on Valencia Island. Now safely on land, they continue to Professor Ivy's lab to obtain the GS Ball.
* The blimp in this episode has a rigid metal framework, which would make it a Zeppelin, not a blimp.
* When the blimp crashes at the end, it turns to more of a yellow color.
* In the first scene, when Brock and Misty are at a convenience store, the sign outside says "convinience".
It was first broadcast in Japan on January 7, 1999 and in the United States on November 20, 1999.
Blurb
<!--http://www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-episodes/02_24-a-friend-in-deed/-->
<i>Ash's Mom and Professor Oak make a surprise visit to watch Ash battle in the Pokémon League Tournament. Professor Oak informs Ash that if he wins his next battle he'll be able to use six Pokémon in battle instead of three. He also tells Ash to remember that if he does his best but loses his matches, he's still a winner! On their way back from dinner, Ash meets another trainer who's also competing in the tournament and also has a Pikachu. Ash and Richie become fast friends especially when they have to fight the unrelenting Team Rocket that steals all of their Pokéballs, along with both of their Pikachu.</i>

Plot
The episode starts with Ash and ashfr going to get something to eat after Ash's victory in the fourth round of the Indigo Plateau Conference. When they arrive at the restaurant they find Ash's mom and Professor Oak standing outside. Ash's mom then heads into the restaurant and begins to cook at the stove, while the cooks look on in confusion. After the food is done the group goes and sits down to eat and talk.

They all head into the elevator and as the doors begin to close a boy runs up, asking them to hold the elevator. He sees Pikachu and pets him on the head. Ash warns him that Pikachu might shock him, but to his surprise Pikachu is enjoying the experience. Suddenly, the power goes out and the elevator stops! The boy tells them that he can get it running again and asks Ash if he can use Pikachu for his ThunderShock attack. Ash agrees, and the boy opens the device and lets Pikachu use ThunderShock on it. The lights in the elevator turn back on and the elevator begins to run again. Professor Oak remarks he's glad they opened the door for him.

Later on, TRT decides to pull off another elaborate scheme: a "physical examination" of sorts. If Trainers do not comply, they will be disqualified. Unfortunately, when Jessie attempts to stuff Pikachu into a sack (getting shocked in the process), James lets slip Jessie's name, causing Ash and Ritchie to realize who they were. Team Rocket performs their usual motto, and, behind the cover of James's Smog, escape with the Poké Balls and Pikachu. Ash and Ritchie chase after them, cutting through the mountains to reach the escaping van. Suddenly, the come onto the road where the Rockets are traversing upon. When seeing the "twerps", James swerves off the road and down a hill and into a river.

It's nighttime, and Ash and Ritchie still haven't confronted Team Rocket. They camp out, vowing to find their Pokémon at sun-up the following day. Meanwhile, the scene cuts to Team Rocket feasting by moonlight. After doing a "Poké-dance", the scene switches back to Ash and Ritchie, staring up at the stars.

Morning arrives. The search continues, and the pair come across tire tracks. Ash and Ritchie follow the tracks, and discover the van along with the sleeping trio of Rockets. They creep through the camp towards the van, and find a muffled voice. It's Pikachu! They are reunited, and the Poké Balls are there too! However, Team Rocket has woken up and finds them trespassing. The quickly rush out of the van, lock the doors, and drive. Still in the van, the twin twerps must think of a way out...

Finally, they remember that they were in a van with 100+ Poké Balls at their disposal. Ritchie identifies his Pokémon due to star-shaped stickers, but Ash sends out a Drowzee, Slowbro, and even a Magikarp before Pikachu sniffs out Bulbasaur's Poké Ball. Bulbasaur uses Tackle and Razor Leaf on the van wall, but to no avail. Ritchie sends out his Charmander Zippo and orders it to Slash open the van wall. The tactic is successful, and the wall breaks to reveal Team Rocket. Jessie sends out Jessie, which is matched by Pikachu. But before Pikachu lets loose a Thunderbolt, James uses 'turn attack,' which causes Pikachu to lose balance. Arbok hits Pikachu back. Ritchie then sends out Sparky, his own Pikachu! Jessie orders an attack, while Sparky and Pikachu both counter with Agility. Arbok is overwhelmed, and both Electric Mice Thunderbolt the van. The front portion explodes, leaving the heroes safe and sound. However, even in Anime Physics, inertia still applies, which means the back of the van is still driving along a mountain road- and off a cliff. Pidgeotto and Ritchie (Ritchie's Butterfree) act as parachutes, catching their respective Trainers (Poké Balls and Pikachu included). After using Whirlwind to land safely, a group of SUVs (which turns out to be the Trainers, plus Brock and Misty) pull up to claim their Pokémon.

After they return, we leave off with Ash and Ritchie finding out that their next opponents are... each other!
Trivia
* Professor Oak's Pokémon Lecture: <!--Description here.-->
** Pokémon senryū summary: Various limited edition goods, souvenir salesman.
* This episode, as well as the next two episodes, each have the word "friend" in the title, referencing Ash's ongoing friendship with Ritchie.
* Ritchie mentions being able to identify his Poké Balls from the rest of the stolen ones because he placed Star Stickers on them. This can be considered an early precursor of the Seal concept before its introduction in Generation IV.
* Ritchie's Charmander is called Zippo, which may be a reference to the American refillable cigarette lighter brand, Zippo.
* An instrumental of Together Forever can be heard, as well as Tears, After the Cloudy Weather.

Errors
* When it turns dark in the lift, Professor Oak's eyebrows turn gray. The same error happens again when they're outside the elevator.
* Though the power goes out while the characters are in the elevator, when they emerge into the lobby, all the lights are on. Although, everyone in the elevator assumes that the power went out, when it could have just been the elevator that had broken down. Either way, elevators are never set on the same power groups in buildings as the main rooms.
* When James commands Weezing to use Smog for the first time, his glove is missing.
* Through most of the Team Rocket motto and a little bit after, Jessie's eyes are different colors. This is most noticeable when she says "blast off at the speed of light."
* When Ash is chasing Team Rocket, he turns around after Ritchie calls after him and Ash's eyes are a lighter color than normal.
* After Jessie is shown dizzy, Ritchie's eyes are blue.
* When Team Rocket gets blasted off, Arbok disappears.
* Ash initially cannot find his Poké Balls, save for Bulbasaur. However, after Pikachu and Sparky defeat Team Rocket, he immediately calls on Pidgeotto.

After they return, we leave off with Ash and Ritchie finding out that their next opponents are... each other!
* When Team Rocket got blasted off, Arbok disappeared.
* Ash initially cannot find his Poké Balls, save for Bulbasaur. However, after Pikachu and Sparky defeat Team Rocket, he immediately calls on Pidgeotto.
Blurb
<!--http://www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-episodes/02_23-the-fourth-round-rumble/-->
<i>Ash's fourth battle on the Grass Field is against his toughest opponent yet! He battles Jeanette Fisher from Crimson City who brings a whole cheering section with her. Jeanette uses a powerful Scyther, which Ash has never battled before. Will his Bulbasaur be able whip Scyther's double team attack by using his reliable vine whip? To finish off the match, Jeanette brings out her Bellsprout which Ash feel is far inferior to his Pokémon. Once again, Ash lets his over-confidence take over.</i>

Plot
Ash, Pikachu, Misty, and Brock are watching Gary Oak's Round 4 match in the Rock Field. Gary's Nidoking is pitted against Melissa's Golem. Nidoking charges with a Horn Attack, but Golem counters by grabbing on Nidoking's horn, then uses Seismic Toss. Nidoking is defeated and Gary is out of the competition. Frustrated by the defeat, Gary heads home. Ash thinks that he's going to lose his Round 4 match on the Grass Field as well, and becomes nervous, but Brock and Misty cheer him on. He then later learns, thanks to Professor Oak, that all of Pallet Town is cheering him on, which only makes him more nervous.

Meanwhile, Jessie, James and MTR have opened up a souvenir stand so they can make money, selling souvenirs and, when the souvenirs are sold out, fake Gym Badges which Meowth made from bottlecaps; but like always, their true intention is to steal the Trainers' Pokémon.

At the Grass Field, Ash is getting ready for his next match with Jeanette Fisher. As always, Brock becomes lovestruck and starts to root for Jeanette. Misty admonishes Brock for that. Ash starts off with Bulbasaur, and Jeanette uses Beedrill. The Bug Pokémon is about to hit Bulbasaur with Poison Sting, but Bulbasaur dodges it. Bulbasaur uses Razor Leaf, but Beedrill counters with Twineedle. Bulbasaur dodges the attack again. Misty is hoping Jeanette may not have more Pokémon like her Beedrill, and Brock is hoping Jeanette doesn't have a boyfriend. Misty tells him, "There's no way that boyfriend is going to be you, mister, if that girl beats Ash!". Ash has Bulbasaur use Leech Seed, draining away Beedrill's energy. Brock becomes depressed that Beedrill is losing, but Misty angrily reminds him of who he should be rooting for. Ash then tells Bulbasaur to finish it off using Tackle. Jeanette's Beedrill faints and Bulbasaur wins.

Jeanette sends her next Pokémon, Scyther. Bulbasaur launches a Razor Leaf at it, but Scyther uses Double Team to evade. Scyther gets in a few hits before Ash gets the idea to use Vine Whip on all the targets, so Bulbasaur will eventually hit the real one. The plan works, and Scyther is knocked out.

Unwavering, Jeanette sends out her last Pokémon - Bellsprout. Ash laughs at first, saying she must be desperate to use something so obviously weak. Bulbasaur uses a Tackle attack, but Bellsprout bends away in a wobble-like manner with ease, picks up Bulbasaur, repeatedly slams him into the ground, and knocks Bulbasaur out.

Ash is shocked at this loss. Brock realizes that Jeanette's Bellsprout must be exceptionally trained, or else it would not be used in a League battle.

Ash sends out Pikachu to try to fight. Pikachu uses ThunderShock, but Bellsprout dodges the attack, and uses Razor Leaf. Pikachu was able to dodge and tries to use Thunderbolt, but Bellsprout's roots keep him ingrained and immune to electric attacks. Pikachu now tries to do some punching and kick-boxing but Bellsprout slams Pikachu & defeats him.

Down to his last Pokémon, Ash pauses for a second and sends out... Muk. Both Misty and Brock are shocked that Ash recalled Muk from Oak's lab as a backup Pokémon. Muk is able to absorb Bellsprout's Slam and Razor Leaf attacks with ease, then uses a Body Slam (essentially smothering Bellsprout) to finish it off.

Ash wins the battle, and has now cleared all four preliminary fields.

Major events
* Gary loses his fourth round battle, placing him in the Top 32 in the Indigo Plateau Conference.
* Gary heads back to Pallet Town.
* Ash uses his Muk in battle for the first time.
* Ash's Muk is revealed to know Body Slam.
* Ash wins his fourth and final preliminary round match in the Pokémon League and advances to the fifth round, securing him a place in the Indigo Stadium.
* This episode marks the third appearance of James's Victreebel. In The Breeding Center Secret, Victreebel's voice is low, but like in All Fired Up!, its voice is extremely screechy and high-pitched in this episode.
* In this episode, TRT uses a Team Rocket mottos.
* Team Rocket does not blast off in this episode.
* This episode was banned in South Korea due to Jeanette's Japanese clothing.
* On its original airing in Japan, it was followed by a two-hour clip show, It's the New Year! Pocket Monsters Special!.
Errors
* When Officer Jenny commands her Growlithe to use Flamethrower, she incorrectly refers to it as Arcanine in the dub, and its cry is also identical to the Arcanine in the previous episode.
**However, this error is corrected in Castilian Spanish dub
* In one shot, Professor Oak's eyebrows change to large and gray.
* For a split second during the cut between the commercial break and the first half of the "Who's That Pokémon" segment, the first quarter second of the Japanese "Who's That Pokémon" segment can be seen. Though mostly obscured by the dubs whiteout transition effect, one can clearly make out the Japanese "Pocket Monster" logo in the lower right-hand corner.
* When Jeanette commands her Scyther to use Slash, the next command was a dubbing error. In the dub, Scyther uses Quick Attack. In the original Japanese version, it was Swift.
* Jeanette's Beedrill used Tackle, which Beedrill cannot legally learn in the games.
* When the screen pans horizontally across the central flame, the stadium shifts repeatedly.
* Just after Pikachu uses Thunderbolt on Bellsprout, the zig-zag mark is missing from under one of Ash's eyes.
* Double Team and Vine Whip in the blurb are both lowercase.
Ancient Pokémon) is the 72nd episode of the Pokémon anime. It first aired in Japan on November 26, 1998 and in the United States on October 14, 1999.
Blurb
<!--http://www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-episodes/02_18-the-ancient-puzzle-of-pokemopolis/-->
<i>While Ash and Brock are busy training for the Pokémon League, they inadvertently uncover a hidden temple containing Pokémon fossils. Misty recalls reading about a hidden city where people used to build temples to honor Pokémon. Could they have stumbled upon the ancient city of Pokémopolis?</i>

Plot
Ash is finally training for the Pokémon League, and is battling Brock. Ash's Ash is battling Brock's Brock. Pikachu is about to use Thunderbolt, and Vulpix is about to use Flamethrower, when Jigglypuff appears in-between them. At Ash and Brock's command, Pikachu and Vulpix fire their attacks in a different direction, destroying a rock wall. As Ash and his friends walk closer, they see that they have uncovered the entrance to a temple, as well as a gigantic bell. They find an ancient artifact in the rubble, and an archaeologist named Eve takes it.

Eve and the other archaeologists are digging up artifacts related to the ancient city of Pokémopolis, and a professor finds a spoon similar to the first artifact. Pokémopolis was destroyed in a storm a long time ago, and an ancient tablet reads that two great powers of destruction will fight and destroy the world, and no human knows the secret to stop them.

That night, TRT attempts to steal the rare and valuable artifacts from the temple. Jessie has her Jessie enter the temple and bring back the most valuable thing it can find. It brings back a dark object that appears to be three dark orbs together. It absorbs Arbok, and chases after Team Rocket. It makes footprints in the ground as it chases them, as though it is invisible. It absorbs them as well, offscreen.

Next day, the professor finds the dark device, and is absorbed by it. It then absorbs all the archaeologists except Eve, and turns into a giant Gengar with strange markings on it. Gengar heads to the nearest town to destroy it. As the nearest town is Pallet Town, Ash tries to stop it. Ash, Misty, and Brock chase after it while Eve heads back to the van, where the artifacts are floating around. He sends Ash after it, but the Gust Attack doesn't do much, and Pidgeotto is absorbed by Gengar. Brock sends Brock after it and has Onix use Bind, wrapping around Gengar's leg, but Gengar absorbs it too.

Gengar chases Ash, Misty, and Brock back to the van, where Eve is possessed by the two strange artifacts (the one that looks like a spoon and the other one with the same design), and the spoon sticks in the other one like a key, and the spell on Eve and the other artifacts is broken. The two artifacts then transform into a giant Alakazam, also with strange markings on it. Gengar and Alakazam battle. Alakazam shoots energy waves that, when they hit the ground or a wall, transform into strangely-shaped stones. What those are is unknown. Gengar and Alakazam enter a beam struggle with Night Shade and Psybeam respectively, and where the beams collide, they shoot into the sky, threatening to destroy the entire planet.

Ash has his Pikachu use Thunderbolt on them when they step into the water, but although they are affected, no significant damage is caused to them. Then, Jigglypuff appears and Sing its song. Everyone inside the giant Gengar falls asleep, but Gengar and Alakazam do not, as Jigglypuff is too small to put them to sleep. Gengar knocks Alakazam backward, and it crashes into Jigglypuff, sending it flying into the distance, Team Rocket style.

However, Jigglypuff's song makes the giant bell glow, and it summons forth a giant Jigglypuff. The giant Jigglypuff's Sing is loud and powerful enough to put the giant Gengar and Alakazam to sleep, as well as Ash, Misty, Brock, Eve, Pikachu, and Misty. Just like the regular Jigglypuff, the giant Jigglypuff gets angry when it sees that Gengar and Alakazam fell asleep, and pulls off the head of the bell, revealing it to be a paintbrush, and scribbles on Gengar and Alakazam's faces.

When Ash and the others wake up, the dark clouds have vanished, as have the three giant Pokémon. The artifacts and all the giant Gengar's victims have all reappeared. Ash walks up to Team Rocket, and they decide not to battle Ash this time, and run off.

So the mystery of Pokémopolis has been solved, but the biggest mystery has yet to be solved - will Ash ever get to training for the Pokémon League?
* Professor Oak's Pokémon Lecture: Rapidash
** Pokémon senryū summary: Cold winter; if Rapidash was here, it would be warm.
* A stone tablet very similar to the one that Eve deciphers appears almost exactly four years later in the episode A Ruin with a View. It shows up in the possession of Professor Alden, who learns from it the way to get into the stone chamber of the Oldale Ruins.
* James refers to a location in the real world, Miami Beach.
* This is the second time someone, namely the giant Gengar and Alakazam, doesn't fall asleep to Jigglypuff's song, this time because Jigglypuff was too small to affect them.
* The giant Gengar's ability to trap other people and Pokémon inside its body is somewhat similar to the Groudon from Jirachi: Wish Maker. Team Rocket were also trapped inside both.
* Alakazam uses a move similar to Psycho Cut, although the move was revealed three generations after.
* This episode is one of the very few where Team Rocket doesn't blast off (Jigglypuff blasted off instead).
* This episode is featured on Volume 2: Jigglypuff from Viz Media's Pokémon All-Stars series.

Errors
* In the beginning of this episode Ash commands Pikachu to use "Electric Attack" on Brock's Vulpix. This is most likely a translation error, as ThunderShock's Japanese name でんきショック means Electric Shock.
* Although Arbok was the first Pokémon to go into the Dark Device it is never seen for the rest of the episode.
* The title card for this episode misspells Pokémopolis as Pokemopolis without the e acute (é).
* Brock's Vulpix used Agility in this episode, a move it is normally incapable of learning. In the original Japanese version, Brock tells Vulpix to use Quick Attack.
* Muk appears much smaller when seen next to Professor Oak.
* Togepi does not retract its spikes when it falls asleep due to the giant Jigglypuff's song.

Dub edits
* Ash commanded Pikachu to use ThunderShock on Gengar and Alakazam to free himself, Misty, Brock, and Eve from being frozen by Gengar. In the original Japanese version, Ash commanded Pikachu to use Thunderbolt on Gengar and Alakazam.
Unfortunately, this trainer has had all of his Pokémon Badges stolen from him and unless he gets eight more badges he won't be able to complete in the Tournament. Ash is unfairly challenged to a battle where the winner gets to keep all eight of Ash's Badges!</i>

Plot
The episode begins with Ash, Misty, and Brock visiting Professor Oak's Lab for some advice on training for the Pokémon League. Oak suggests that if Ash wants to compete that he get on his way immediately. Ash heads back to his house to get his bag and Professor Oak and Ash's mom give him a heartfelt good luck as he sets on his way for the Pokémon League. Brock leads Ash and Misty through a grass field suggesting that it is a short cut to Indigo Plateau, when a shadow suddenly flies by and jumps into the air. The shadow lands in front of them and is revealed to be a Pokémon Trainer named Otoshi, who challenges Ash to a Pokémon battle, after he realizes that they are heading to the Pokémon League. However, he tells Ash that the loser must give up all eight of their Badges to the winner. Ash turns down the offer and starts heading back on his way when Otoshi suggests that Ash is afraid of losing to him. This tempts Ash into agreeing to the battle, despite Brock and Misty's warnings.

The battle begins with Otoshi's Marowak against Ash's Bulbasaur. Ash looks up Marowak on his Pokédex, which suggests that despite Marowak's small size, Marowak's strength is quite impressive. Brock warns Ash not to get caught off guard by Marowak's strength. Ash commands Bulbasaur to use Tackle against Marowak, which misses as Marowak dodges. Ash instructs Bulbasaur to use Vine Whip as Otoshi tells Marowak to use Focus Energy and then Bone Club to deflect the attack. Then Marowak rushes over and attacks Bulbasaur, causing critical damage. Ash substitutes Pikachu for Bulbasaur. Pikachu rushes to Marowak, but then Marowak starts continuously using Bone Club on Pikachu, causing Pikachu to have to dodge the attacks. Then Pikachu jumps out and uses Thunder Shock against Marowak, causing it to faint.

Otoshi then begins to throw a fit over losing, and admits that he has no Badges to give. Otoshi admits that his Badges were stolen from him as he was walking to the Pokémon League. Otoshi and Marowak noticed some fruit on the ground. Being very hungry after much training, the pair rush over to eat, only to fall into a pit fall trap. It is revealed that TRT took his Badges as he lay dazed in the pit.

Ash decides to help Otoshi get his Badges back, despite Misty and Brock warning him that they'll be late for the competition. Ash explains that he worked hard for his Badges and how terrible it would have been if he had lost his Badges, that stealing from one person is like stealing from everyone. So, they all agree to work together in search of Team Rocket to retrieve the Badges.

Meanwhile, James and MTR are bragging to each other about how easy it was to steal Otoshi's Badges. James suggests to Meowth they take one more look at the Badges when Meowth realizes that they're gone, along with Jessie. That's when James says that he remembers Jessie going off to shop with a big square package in a big green handkerchief. Meowth then figures out that Jessie must have stolen the stolen Badges from them.

Jessie is revealed to be heading toward the Pokémon League with the Badges. She decides to win the competition by herself, believing that she can be a solo superstar without sharing the glory with James and Meowth.

Meanwhile, Ash's Pidgeotto flies about searching for Team Rocket, and appears to have noticed Team Rocket's balloon flying upward with James and Meowth inside. Ash then instructs Pidgeotto to pop their balloon so that they can't get away. When they land, Otoshi commands Team Rocket to give up the Badges, when Meowth admits that they have been robbed as well.

Misty demands that they show them all that they own, just in case if they were lying. After they give a good search, Brock pronounces that it's all just junk. Meowth tells Ash and the gang that Jessie had stolen them. Marowak starts throwing a tantrum, and Meowth translates to Otoshi that Marowak doesn't want to be his Pokémon anymore, because of all of its hard work going to waste. When Otoshi asks Marowak to stay, the Bone Keeper Pokémon pushes Otoshi away and leaves him.

Ash, Misty, and Brock agree that they all have to find Jessie and the Badges or else Marowak may never come back. However, James and Meowth begin to give chase as well to find Jessie first. then Jessie is then revealed to have donned a disguise in order to fool Ash, Misty, and Brock, Otoshi, James and Meowth.

Jessie spots a Trainer admiring his Badges, and after seeing how pretty the Badges look, she begins thinking about taking them. Above Jessie and the Trainer are James and Meowth in the Team Rocket Balloon. James guesses that the woman beside the Trainer is Jessie by the style of clothing she is wearing. Meowth agrees and decides to land, right as Jessie attempts to steal the Badges of the other Trainer. James and Meowth then throw a smoke bomb at them. James begins to recite their motto, then Jessie joins in and the Trainer runs away after realizing that the woman is a member of Team Rocket. James declares from then on that Team Rocket shall steal as a team and not as individuals.

That's when Ash and the gang arrive and demand that Team Rocket give the Badges back to Otoshi. Jessie tells Otoshi that she won't give the Badges back unless he can beat her in a Pokémon battle. The battle begins as Jessie sends out her Arbok and as Otoshi sends out his Doduo.

Meanwhile, Marowak is walking through the woods and notices some Trainers and their Pokémon training for the Pokémon League, which reminds it of the intense training it went through with Otoshi. Marowak then decides to go back to Otoshi's side as his Pokémon.

The battle between Jessie and Otoshi begins as Doduo runs over to Arbok and gets slammed by Arbok's tail, and then by its head. Then Doduo's heads begin to argue with each other leaving it wide open. Arbok then wraps itself around Doduo and squeezes it. Jessie attempts to catch Otoshi's Doduo when a bone comes flying and stops Jessie's Poké mid-air. The bone is revealed to have come from Marowak, who has returned to Otoshi. Jessie's Arbok then comes over to attack. Otoshi commands Marowak to use Focus Energy as Arbok begins to use Double-Edge. Then, Marowak uses Bone Club and stops Arbok in its tracks. Marowak then uses Bonemerang, sending Arbok flying towards Team Rocket. James sends out his Weezing in order to stop Arbok from colliding with them. However, Ash commands Pikachu to attack, so Pikachu jumps into the air and uses an electric attack on Weezing and Arbok sending them flying to Team Rocket's Balloon as Team Rocket tries to retreat. Otoshi then commands his Marowak to use Bonemerang at the balloon sending Team Rocket blasting off. The Badge case then falls from the balloon and Misty catches it.

Otoshi walks over to Marowak asking it if it will battle in the Pokémon League by Otoshi's side. Marowak accepts as Misty returns the Badges to Otoshi safe and sound. Brock congratulates Ash for doing the right thing by stopping and helping someone who really needed it, despite almost being late for the Pokémon League.

Later, Ash and his friends notice Indigo Plateau up ahead and they all begin to run as their journey continues...
* Brock says the episode's title during Ash and Otoshi's battle.
* This episode was banned in South Korea.
* This episode marks the first appearance of James's bottle cap collection.
* James is shown to own Pogs, which were popular among children in the 90's.
* In Otoshi's memories, it is shown he fought a Scyther when he won the Soul. Also, it is shown he fought a Hitmonlee when he won the Marsh.

Errors
* When Otoshi tells Ash he will either "lose his Badges now, or lose them later", he implies that the Trainers who do not win at the Pokémon League will have their Badges taken.
* Pikachu knocks out Otoshi's Marowak with an Electric move, but Ground Pokémon should be immune to such attacks.
* Flashbacks show Otoshi earning a Volcano Badge, a Marsh Badge, a Soul Badge, and a Thunder Badge. However, when Team Rocket takes the Badges from Otoshi, the Thunder Badge cannot be seen. The Badges visible are a Boulder Badge, a Cascade Badge, a Marsh Badge, a Soul Badge, a Volcano Badge, and three unknown Badges, two of them square and one of them green and triangle-shaped. Later, when Jessie shows the other Trainer Otoshi's Badges, the Thunder Badge is there but the Marsh Badge isn't. Also all the Badges except for the Boulder Badge and the Thunder Badge are slightly distorted in this scene.
* When Ash remembers his battles with the Gym Leaders, the scene in which Bulbasaur defeats Venonat is shown. The Venonat was Aya's Venonat, and Ash won his Soul Badge by defeating Koga, the Gym Leader, when his Charmander beat Koga's Golbat.

* The scene exactly before Otoshi and Ash choose Pokémon to battle with, Ash's gloves appear over the upper tips of his fingers instead of the lower part of his fingers.

Dub edits
* When Brock looks at all of James's items, instead of a Pokémon card collection which appeared in the original, photos of James are shown. The card on top is Team Rocket from the Team Rocket expansion.
