Ash and his friends reach the Kanto Safari zone, inhabited by a group of wild Kangashkan. A wild young boy named Tomo lives with them after he lost contact with his parents; he aids Ash, Misty, Brock and the local Officer Jenny to defend the Kangashkans from the attacks of Team Rocket. Later, Tommy's real parents (whom he doesn't remember, even when they've been searching for him for years) show up, and after a small crisis they're happily reunited.
Trivia
*In both English and Japanese, Dawn shares her name with an evolutionary stone. However, it is not the same stone: her Japanese name is the same as the name of the Shiny Stone, not the Dawn Stone.
*Dawn is 4'6" (140 cm) tall and weighs 75 lbs (34 kg).
*Dawn and Lucas are asked if they are a couple by Mars during the Lake Verity battle: "So what is it? Are you some lovey-dovey couple to the rescue?"
* This episode is followed by Holiday Hi-Jynx and Snow Way Out in the dub.

Errors
* Although the episode's title card read It's Mr. Mimie Time, Ash read it out loud as It's Mr. Mime Time. The title card is obviously a typo on 4Kids' part.
Errors
* Although the episode's title card read It's Mr. Mimie Time, Ash read it out loud as It's Mr. Mime Time. The title card is obviously a typo on 4Kids' part.
May (Japanese: ハルカ Haruka) is a ten-year-old Pokémon Coordinator from the anime and a traveling companion of Ash. Her goal is to compete in Pokémon Contests and win ribbons, win the Grand Festival, and become a top Coordinator. She traveled through Hoenn with Ash, Brock, and her little brother Max. She is the daughter of Norman and Caroline, and her starter Pokémon was a Torchic given to her by Professor Birch. She is voiced by KAORI in the original, by Veronica Taylor (4Kids dub) and Michelle Knotz (PUSA/TAJ dub) in the English-language dub, by Leyla Rangel in the Latin American Spanish dub, and by Tatiane Keplemaier in the Brazilian dub.

In the anime
Character
May is a materialistic young girl who loves shopping and eating treats. She is generally very sweet and optimistic, though she shows a tougher side sometimes, such as when she argues with her little brother, Max. She loves cute Pokémon and flashy techniques, and sometimes takes an interest in helping other people with romantic problems. She makes Pokéblocks, including ones called "May's Purple Surprise" and "May's Pink Surprise" (Japanese: Haruka's Delicious and Haruka's Delicious 2).

When May debuted in the anime, she did not like Pokémon at all and was only interested in becoming a Pokémon Trainer so she could travel. She did not know much about battling and gave wrong attack names, and did not like the idea of taking on Trainers as skilled as Gym Leaders. However, she found a niche for herself in the Pokémon world when she learned about Pokémon Contests, and began focusing on Pokémon coordinating. She has three main rivals in contests: Drew, Jessie and Harley. At the end of the Advanced Generation series, she leaves to compete with Drew and Harley in Johto.

May will reappear in DP076 in a guest role, much like how Misty reappeared during the Advance Generation series.

May has Contest Passes to compete in Hoenn, Kanto, and Johto. She may also have one for Sinnoh.

May has a personal ending theme song, I won't lose! ~May's theme~, performed by KAORI. It was first used as the background music in the episode Curbing the Crimson Tide and again in next episode, What I Did for Love.

Trivia
* May was the first female video game protagonist to travel with Ash.
* May is the only main character who has two of the same Pokémon as Ash.
* She is the only one of Ash's friends to catch more than one starter Pokémon.
* She is the only one of Ash's friends who started off not liking Pokémon.
* She is the only beginner trainer that was not given an introduction by the Narrator in their first episode. Instead, she gave her own Grammatical person introduction.
* May was the second of Ash's friends to have a lead role in a Pokémon movie. Her brother Max was the first.
* May and Max are the only friends of Ash not to meet Ash's rival, Gary Oak, at one time or another.
* May and Max are two of three of Ash's friends who has had their father make an appearance in the anime. The other is Brock.
* All of Ash's female friends have a native Korean word as their name in Korean version (dew, spring and Dawn respectively). Such names were trendy in late 70s, now they are rare.

Dawn (Japanese: ヒカリ Hikari) is a ten-year-old girl traveling through Sinnoh with Ash and Brock. Her goal is to become a great coordinator like her mother, Johanna. Her first Pokémon is a Dawn that she received from Professor Rowan in the first Diamond & Pearl episode. She is voiced by 豊口めぐみ Megumi Toyoguchi in the Japanese version, Emily Jenness in the English dub, by Fernanda Bulara in the Brazilian dub, and by Gaby Ugarte in the Latin American Spanish dub.

In the anime
Character
Dawn is notable for her confidence, since she is always looking towards the future rather than dwelling on her mistakes. In the Japanese version, she often says, "Daijōbu!" Although not consistently translated in the English dub at first, she began to regularly use "No need to worry!".

Like Ash, she is lucky enough to have seen a legendary Pokémon, the projected soul of Mesprit in Following a Maiden's Voyage!.

She had a bicycle, but like Misty's and May's bikes, Ash's Pikachu destroyed it with its Thunderbolt. However, she did not mention this to Ash until over 30 episodes after it happened. Johanna gave Dawn one of her old ribbons from her days as a coordinator as a gift for luck. She also had a large suitcase full of dresses, but her mother made her leave it at home due to its impracticality.

Out of all of Ash's friends, Dawn is the only one so far to have her debut episode dedicated completely to herself. Unlike other debut episodes, Ash didn't even appear until the last 30 seconds. Additionally, she is the one of Ash's friends to get the most development.

She has a Contest Pass for the Sinnoh region. In Dawn's Early Night, when she competed in the Hearthome City Contest, she lost in the Appeal Round, making her the first of the main characters to drop out of a contest by losing the appeal round. In DP061, she lost the Appeal Round for second time in a row.

She has two childhood friends that appeared in the anime, Kenny and Yumomi, both of which call her sometimes Dee Dee (Japanese: ピカリ Pikari). Dawn has prevented them from telling Ash and Brock about the reason why she has this nickname. She seems to be closer to Yumomi than to Kenny.

Like May, she has her own ending theme song, titled 君のそばで 〜ヒカリのテーマ〜 By Your Side ~Hikari's Theme~. It is the first ending of the Diamond & Pearl anime. The song is performed by グリン Grin.

Trivia
*May and Misty were girls who traveled with Ash Ketchum. Both of them have Japanese names including the katakana カ ka and dub names starting with M, and ending with Y, so some fans believed Dawn would as well have a dub name starting and ending with M and Y, because she had カ in her name. However, this was revealed to be false when her English name was revealed to be Dawn, which appears to reference Pokémon Diamond as Paul references Pokémon Pearl. "Dawn" may also be a reference to "Hikari," which means "light"--dawn is essentially the day's first light.
*Just like Ash's Pikachu, her Piplup wasn't ready to obey her when they first met. Eventually, they became fast friends.
*She is the only female main character that doesn't have a sibling.

*Unlike Ash's other friends, Dawn has already crossed a lot of boundaries that have previously only been held by Ash.
**She saw a legendary Pokémon prior to meeting Ash.
**She's the first main character to capture an Electric Pokémon besides Ash.
**Having already captured Dawn, Dawn, and Buizel, Dawn has captured more Pokémon in her first 35 episodes that any of the other main characters aside from Ash. This isn't including the Pokémon they all started with.
***Misty captured Misty and Misty before EP035.
***Brock captured Brock and Brock before The Battling Eevee Brothers.
***Tracey captured Tracey before A Sappy Ending (by which point he wasn't even traveling with Ash any longer) and hasn't captured anything since.
***May captured May before Win, Lose or Drew.
***Comparatively, Ash captured Caterpie, Pidgeotto, Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Krabby, Primeape, Muk, and all 30 of his Tauros before the end of EP035.
**She was the first main character other than Ash to battle a member of the Elite Four.
*Dawn is the second Coordinator that is voiced by Megumi Toyoguchi in Japanese, the first being Janet.
*Every Pokémon Dawn has captured or received has been in the Ground egg group.
*When Dawn had Buizel, she had two Waters, while afterwards, with Aipom, then Ambipom, she has two Normals. These relate to Ash's previous two female traveling partners, as Misty is a Gym Leader who specializes in Water-types, while May's father Norman is a Gym Leader that specializes in Normal-types.
*A recent trailer of Giratina and the Sky's Bouquet: Shaymin implies that Dawn may catch a Swinub, as one is standing next to her Pokémon.
*All of Ash's female friends have a native Korean word as their name in Korean version (dew, May and shine respectively). Such names were trendy in late 70s, now they are rare.

Pokémon
Trivia
*May and Misty were girls who traveled with Ash Ketchum. Both of them have Japanese names including the katakana カ ka and dub names starting with M, and ending with "Y", so some fans believed Dawn would as well have a dub name starting and ending with M and "Y", because she had カ in her name.
