Biology
Physiology
Sawsbuck is a deer-like Pokémon that is mainly brown and cream in coloration. In its Spring Form, blossoms with pink petals and yellow insides adorn its horns, with some of the prongs being tipped with cream coloration. Its ears are rhombus-shaped with darker, also rhombus-shaped ear insides. Its eyes have light-orange markings that curve down to sides of its face. Its nose is dark-brown, and its chin, as well as the sides of its face, are cream in coloration. A large scruff of cream fur is present on the base of its neck, with its underbelly, as well as its lower legs, being cream-colored as well. Light-orange stripes rim its underbelly, and its back is decorated with sparse pink speckles. The limbs of Sawsbuck are slender, tipped with hooves and a dewclaw-like pointed feature on the underside of the lower legs, and its tail is low and pointed.
Trivia
* No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Sawsbuck and its pre-evolution, Deerling.
* Sawsbuck represents January in the Unova horoscope.

Origin
Sawsbuck may be based on a Père David's Deer, which is a species of deer that decorates its antlers with foliage during the breeding season. Its antlers may also be based on a deciduous tree.

Sawsbuck may also be based on one of the stories of Baron Münchhausen in which he tries to shoot a stag using cherry pits in his musket. The stag survives and escapes, and the next year he discovers a stag with a cherry tree growing out of its head.

Name origin
Sawsbuck is derived from sawbuck (a device for holding rough wood so that it may be sawn) and may be a combination of sawbuck and buck (male deer). Saws may also be an acronym for the names of the seasons (summer, autumn, winter, and spring).

Mebukijika may be a combination of 芽吹き mebuki (to bud) and 鹿 shika (deer).
For the record, is it "Boulderbadge" or "Boulder Badge"? Also, I figure listing what Badges do both here and in the Gym Leader page is redundant. Is it REALLY necessary to imply that the Japanese word for "badge" is different from the English word? --Ketsuban
To Ket, I think someone may have gone a bit overboard on our translation thing. ^^; And with respect to the #___Badge, yeah, I'll edit that so it's possible. And I believe the name is Boulderbadge, with no space, although this in turn is probably due to the game's character limit. evkl 00:33, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Does anyone know where the Kanto and Johto badges' images came from, or who made them? I think it would look a lot better if we had something like that for the other two regions... I mean, if anyone has some drawing skill and can draw out the Hoenn badges, then digitally color them like the other ones, that'd be a good substitute for that anime screenshot... Same for the Shin'ō ones, if we get their colors ahead of time... Depends on how fast we get through Shin'ō in the anime, though, I'd suppose. == Multiple Gyms ==

I've been watching Pokémon Chronicles lately, and something in the episode where Misty takes over as Gym Leader (Cerulean Blues, I think) seems kinda relevant. The Inspectors that are busy closing down various Gyms across Kanto are reported on the news to have closed down several already. If eight badges are a requirement for entering the Indigo League, there must be at least eight still open after those closures, right? That would seem to imply that there were (prior to that episode) several extra Gyms.

Also, in the games the "Fighting Dojo" is supposed to have had Gym status, and recently lost it. Bearing in mind that Sabrina's Gym has a pretty formidable reputation, I doubt its "brand new", in which case I'd espect the Fighting Dojo and Sabrina's Gym to have run simultaneously, at least for a bit. I know the Dojo was never mentioned in the Anime, but maybe one of Gary's badges (or the other trainers') could be from there, or other similar Gyms that were closed down?
I see someone reccently changed the badge names to give them consistant spacing. But a pretty quick video search on YouTube shows me that Boulderbadge and so on was correct, and is still kept in FR/LG.--Porygon 09:38, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
:Yes, but it's HEAT BADGE and so on in Emerald, so I think that it was always their intention to have spaces, they just didn't have room in RBYGSC and wanted to keep with tradition in RSFRLG. :Weighing in, I think other forms of canon have always put a space between the words, which gives some weight to standardizing them as always spaced. I mean, granted, we usually set game canon as the one true canon, but... also, btw, RSE and FRLG weren't necessarily translated by the same people in the company, which could account for the difference. I wouldn't be surprised if the people translating FRLG were looking back at the generation I data for reference far more than the data for the other generation III games, except maybe to make sure the new items shared the same names. ==Computers versus badges==
Does anyone else find it odd that badges/ribbons themselves serve as authentication rather than a computerized system (then again, if badges were simply for decoration and kept track of by computer, we couldn't have "badge theft" episodes)? It seems strange that there's a computerized system for transferring Pokémon over large distances but not a system for keeping track of trainer acheivements. I seem to recall at least one instance in the Special manga where Pikachu or another Pokemon was at least subtly influenced by the badges. Redstar 03:04, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
: The way I recall it (Though mind you it's been a while isnce I've read the RBG arc), the badges alone don't control Pokémon in Special. But when put in the Badge Energy Amplifier, that's when it is able to control Pokémon within a specific radius.
:: Yes, that makes more sense. I vaguely recall an instance of Pikachu being manipulated by Red or another person, but it may not have been badge-related or even in the manga. :For future reference, in case anyone brings this point up again, this suggestion doesn't work on one major principle: the obedience of the traded pokémon is directly controlled by the badged a player has. Meaning, if I skipped Sabrina (whose badge grants obedience to pokémon up to level 70) leaving me with only obedience at level 50 (Rainbow Badge), then if I went to fight Blaine (whose order is after Sabrina), my traded pokémon would still stop obeying me once it reached level 51 despite having a superior badge from a trainer stronger than Sabrina. Without the Marsh badge, they will still disobey. These are the abilities granted by a gym badge itself, not simply something that happens with a certain amount of gyms defeated. == Gary and other ideas ==

Part of the article I have ideas about improving:
Gary Oak acquired more than the standard eight Kanto League badges, thus leading to confusion as to whether or not there is an infinite number of badges that can be given out in a given region. By The Battle of the Badge, he is shown to have at least ten badges, only 3 of which correspond to known Kanto league badges, suggesting there are at least fifteen gyms in Kanto. This would, therefore, provide one gym for each of the (at the time) fifteen types. Among these may include the Fighting Dojo, a gym shown to be defunct by Pokémon Red and Blue.

When I first saw the anime episode which is described in this section of the article ( I saw the episode long before I ever read this article) I immediatly thought that Gary recived the badges from other regions (possibly regions that are still unknown as of today) and that the Pokemon League (at least in Kanto) did not care which badges you have as long as you have 8. Also on the subject of more than 8 gym badges in Kanto, there were examples of cites in anime (in Kanto) which were not in the games (such as the city in which Ash got his Muk, if I not mistaken)leading a viewer to believe that there could be many more cities (and gym badges) in the region. I would be glad to hear input from others on these ideas (and people to confirm I am making correct episode references)and if anybody thinks any of these ideas deserve to go in the article.Tough_guy22 19:25, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
:::Nevermind, I misread your post. It has been implied in the anime that the badges only work in one region (as Ash must collect 8 new badges in each region, although this didn't happen until a bit after that episode), and so others must have come from gyms and cities not in the games. Maybe it should be summarised in a paragraph in the section before it turns into a big list with no introduction? <span style="color:#2D4B98;">Werdnae</span> <small><span style="color:#009000;">(talk)</span></small> 01:13, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
::::I think the reason I thought that Gary's badges were from a different region was largly because of the fact that the episode took place in Viridan city, which as we know is connected to the walking route that goes to and from Johto. Would you agree with me that the fact that there are "anime only" cities should be mentioned in the article as a possible reason for there being more that 8 Kanto badges?? (Tough guy22 02:34, 27 May 2010 (UTC))
:::::Yes, it probably should. What should also be mentioned it that there are badges in the anime that aren't in the games (and I mean it should be mentioned outside the character subsections), and that there is thought to be a gym for each type in every region, due to the number of different badges. At the moment it just talks about the badges and then launches into sections for each character. I feel that it looks a little out of place, and the character sections need an introduction of sorts to explain them. That introduction would be the perfect place for this stuff. <span style="color:#2D4B98;">Werdnae</span> <small><span style="color:#009000;">(talk)</span></small> 02:48, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
:The character Gary is protrayed to be likely would have fought the harder gyms if there were in fact 15 gyms in Kanto. Whereas Ash simiply fought the gyms in the cities he went to. It is possible that with Gary being related to Professor Oak he knew more about where stuff is and more cities (as Professor Oak supposedly traveled all over when he was young). Are you good enough that you could change the article, or do you know somebody who is kinda "in charge" of this article??? I've got something I need to do just now, so it'll be a bit more than an hour until I can get to it. You can try editing it if you like. I'm sure once an edit is made to the article everyone watching the recent changes will come along and help. Or you could post it here and get opinions. <span style="color:#2D4B98;">Werdnae</span> <small><span style="color:#009000;">(talk)</span></small> 04:30, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
:::Okay, i've rearranged the section and extended a paragraph to include some of that stuff. I haven't included that Gary may have deliberately chosen harder gyms, or known where the harder gyms were from Professor Oak, as that falls under the speculation category and speculation is (generally) not allowed. I've put in what I think works without becoming speculation and left the rest out. Modify it if you don't like it. <span style="color:#2D4B98;">Werdnae</span> <small><span style="color:#009000;">(talk)</span></small> 06:07, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

28 different gyms
How did you count 28? Ash's 8 + Gary's(10-3) + Otoshi's(8-4) + unknown trainer's 8 is 27 ,guys. Domenc

Icicle Badge problem
The new Icicle Badge in Isshu displays the image for the Sinnoh badge called Icicle Badge in English. The Isshu one should probably say "Icicle Badge (Isshu)" or something like that until the English name is revealed. == Ignoring secondary effects? ==

So I'm a bit confused by what this exactly means... My first impression was that moves like Fire fang which have secondary effects for opponents get a boost, and have the burn chance removed. But then I'm considering a move like Hammer Arm or Superpower. Would those moves also get a power boost and have their NEGATIVE secondary effects removed?

And on the same train of thought would this also affect Flare Blitz's recoil effect? That probably isn't a "secondary effect" (but Flare Blitz's burn effect is) but just want to clarify that, too. Route 228 is a route in Sinnoh that links Route 226 with Route 229. On this route, some of the highest-leveled wild Pokémon in Sinnoh can be found. Like Route 111 in Hoenn, there is a raging sandstorm here that will affect all battles. Route 228 is also home to the move tutor's house, who can teach any starter Pokémon Hydro Cannon, Blast Burn or Frenzy Plant. The route is the only location other than Kanto's Diglett's Cave where wild Diglett or Dugtrio can be found.

Route 222 is a route in Sinnoh. It connects Sunyshore City with Valor Lakefront, and cannot be accessed until the player has defeated Team Galactic at Mt. Coronet.

Route description
Just at the beginning of the route, there is a large patch of grass to the north. The top left of it splits into three branches, each containing an item. <!--I don't really remember, correct it if possible-->Heading east, there is a fork in the road with upper and lower paths.

The upper path has few trainers, a loamy soil patch, and a thin branch next to a ledge with an item at the end. There is a short path leading behind the gate. To the left is a grass patch, and to the right is a Cut tree that leads to an item.

The lower path is on sand. There are six trainers here, five that will only battle if talked to. There are a few large boulders scattered around, along with two rocks that can be Rock Smash. To the northeast of the path, there are two buildings: the Pikachu Fan Club; which contains a trainer disguised as a Pikachu, and a house hosting the Pokémon Size Contest, in which a fisherman will give a prize if the player shows him a large Pokémon of his request. Southeast is a short way to two grassy patches which both contain an item.

At the intersection of both paths, there is a honey tree and a trainer.

Pikachu Fan Club
On the beach, there is a house called the "Pikachu Fan Club", that contains a man with six Pikachu. He claims to challenge the Pokémon Championship using only Pikachu. One of the Pikachu in his house is actually a Trainer dressed up as one, and battles the player, using two Pikachu of her own.

Pokémon Size Contest
This is another house on the beach just right of it. There is a fisherman, who has a dream that a trainer would bring him a giant Pokémon. He will give a prize if the player shows him a large Pokémon of his request.

There is no room in the party template for the names in other languages. Names of similar characters aren't shown in other languages on other pages. Should the other names be deleted or commented out when a party template is added? Otherwise the party template needs modifying. Werdnae 05:19, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
:The trainers have been formatted into a party template. The names in other languages have been removed but I noticed that the Azalea Gym page has the names added under the template. If anyone wants to add the names again, that's probably the pest way to go about doing it. Pyitoechito 18:28, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

The Goldenrod Gym (Japanese: コガネジム Kogane Gym) is the official gym of Goldenrod City. It is based on Normal Pokémon. The Gym Leader is Whitney. Trainers who defeat her receive the Plain.

In the anime
Goldenrod Gym appeared in A Goldenrod Opportunity.

Ash challenged Whitney to a battle for the Plain Badge. She accepted his challenge. Initially, it appeared that Ash was going to win the battle easily. After quickly defeating her Clefairy and Nidorina, he only had one more to go. That all changed when Whitney released her Whitney. She defeated all three of Ash's Pokémon consecutively.

Ash had an informal rematch with Whitney in the following episode, A Dairy Tale Ending. Although the battle took place on Whitney's Uncle Milton's farm and not at the gym, Whitney gave Ash the Plain Badge for defeating her.
