Gary has been a neighbor of [[Ash Ketchum]] since they were both young. At one time they seemed to be friends and went to see movies together as seen in ''[[AG086|Lights, Camerupt, Action!]]'' Before either of their journeys began, both Gary and Ash found an old [[Poké Ball]] while fishing. The two boys began fighting over who would get to keep the Poké Ball but ended up breaking it in half. Since then, they decided to keep the two separate pieces for themselves. It was revealed in ''[[EP269|The Ties That Bind]]'' that they still carried the pieces with them.

The day he started out on his Pokémon journey, he came off as an arrogant trainer, much like his {{pkmn|game}} counterpart, {{ga|Blue}}. His chosen [[starter Pokémon]] was {{TP|Gary|Squirtle|Blastoise}}, which was actually the same Pokémon that Ash originally wanted to start with. He even had a group of [[Gary's cheerleaders|cheerleaders]] who cheered him on in all his battles and would go so far as crying whenever he lost. He didn't walk on his journeys like most trainers did; instead he had his own sporty red convertible with a chauffeur. Gary loved when he got a chance to make fun of Ash by bragging about how far behind Ash was compared to him. He also gave Ash the pet-name of "Ashy-boy" (Japanese: {{tt|"Satoshi''-kun''"|Satoshi is Ash's Japanese name and ''-kun'' is a Japanese honorific, kun can be considered insulting when not used among friends}}), which occasionally seems to annoy him. His style of training at this point was to capture many Pokémon and to use the strongest, as a stark contrast to Ash who focused on developing a bond with his Pokémon.

Soon he would eat his words when he would challenge the [[Viridian City]] [[Gym Leader]], [[Giovanni]] to a Pokémon battle for his final, but not necessary, badge in ''[[EP063|The Battle of the Badge]]''. At first he seemed to be winning against Giovanni, knocking out most of his Pokémon. But then Giovanni sent out {{an|Mewtwo}} against the trainer and even let Gary use both his {{TP|Gary|Arcanine}} and {{p|Nidoking}} against it. Mewtwo made quick work of the two Pokémon and Gary experienced his first (known) loss. However this still didn't change his arrogance. It would take a loss at the [[Pokémon League]] way later on to finally realize that he needed to change himself.

Gary eventually returned in ''[[EP115|A Tent Situation]]''. Much unlike his former self, he congratulated Ash on his victory in the [[Orange Crew|Orange League]]. Soon Ash challenged him to a battle with his {{AP|Pikachu}} as his choice. Gary in turn used his {{TP|Gary|Eevee|Umbreon}}. Gary managed to defeat Ash and then left on his journey through [[Johto]].

In his few appearances during the Johto season, he seemed to have become the complete opposite of who he was. He became polite, intelligent, and respectful to others, including Ash. In ''[[EP270|Can't Beat the Heat!]]'' he battled Ash at the [[Silver Conference]]. Ash ended up winning the battle when his {{AP|Charizard}} defeated Gary's Blastoise.

In ''[[EP273|Gotta Catch Ya Later!]]'', Gary decided that he didn't want to be a Pokémon Trainer anymore, but instead wanted to be a [[Pokémon researcher]] like his grandfather.

===In the ''Advanced Generation'' series===
In ''[[SS015|Putting the Air Back in Aerodactyl]]'', Gary works on [[Sayda Island]] with {{an|Crystal}}. There, he revived an {{p|Aerodactyl}} from an [[Old Amber]]. At first the Aerodactyl was afraid of him and every other person on the island, but Gary soon gained its trust after he fed it some fruit that Aerodactyl used to eat.

Eventually, he moves to the [[Sinnoh]] region where he is currently conducting his research.

In ''[[AG192|Home Is Where The Start Is]]'', Gary reunited with Ash and battled him with his new {{TP|Gary|Electivire}} and defeated Ash's Pikachu once more.

In ''[[DP045|Ill-Will Hunting!]]'' he was taking care of a group of {{p|Shieldon}} and protected them from the evil [[Pokémon Hunter]] [[J]] and [[J's henchmen|her minions]]. He appeared again in ''[[DP085|Fighting Fear With Fear!]]'' where he helped Ash and {{AP|Gligar|Gliscor}} by giving a {{DL|Evolution-inducing held item|Razor Fang}} to Ash which caused {{AP|Gligar}} to evolve later. He was in the area after hearing rumors of {{p|Azelf}}. Upon meeting him, {{an|Dawn}} thought that he was a poet like his [[Professor Oak|grandfather]].

Gary later appeared in ''[[DP151|The Needs of the Three!]]'' and ''[[DP152|The Battle Finale of Legend!]]'', working alongside Professor Rowan at [[Valor Lakefront]] where he attempted to protect Azelf from [[J|Pokémon Hunter J]] and [[Team Galactic]], however he was unable to defeat [[Saturn]] in battle. He later monitored the changes around [[Mt. Coronet]] caused by [[Cyrus]]' attempts to summon {{p|Dialga}} and {{p|Palkia}}.

Since the very start of his own journey, Gary has shown exceptional skill as a Pokémon Trainer, catching and training an astonishing number and variety of strong Pokémon in a short period of time. However, since retiring as a Pokémon Trainer to become a researcher, it isn't known if he continues to catch new Pokémon.

During his journey, Gary collected badges to compete in the [[Indigo Plateau Conference]] and [[Silver Conference]]. He won ten badges in [[Kanto]], of which he already had five by the [[EP025|twenty-fifth episode]], and showed off the whole set in ''[[EP063|The Battle of the Badge]]'' (though he failed to gain an eleventh badge in that episode when faced against {{an|Mewtwo}}). Of the eight badges that Ash won, Gary only has three: A Boulder Badge, a Cascade Badge, and a Rainbow Badge. The other seven are unknown, but aside from the Earth Badge, he didn't get a Thunder Badge, Marsh Badge, Soul Badge, or Volcano Badge.

Gary's achievements in [[Johto]] were not stated, other than that he had the minimum of eight badges to compete in the tournament.

Gary is one of the recurring characters in the [[Electric Tale of Pikachu]] {{pkmn|manga}}. In the manga, Gary is a childhood friend and rival of Ash and frequently appears when Ash does something wrong. He has a sister named [[Daisy Oak|May]], who has no equivalent in the anime.

At the Pokémon League, he is defeated by [[Ritchie]], but confronts Ash at the end of the series. In [[ET20|the epilogue]], he and Ash are shown traveling together on their journey.

* His English name could have been derived from his Japanese name. It may also be referencing the [[wp:Quercus garryana|Garry oak]], a type of oak tree.
* Gary is one of the few characters to have his English dub voice remain unchanged throughout the series. From ''[[EP001|Pokémon - I Choose You!]]'' to this day, he has been voiced by [[Jimmy Zoppi]]. Zoppi is currently credited as '''Billy Beach''' under his Pokémon USA work.
* The only known losses Gary has had during the entire series were against Mewtwo (while under Giovanni's control), against {{Ka|Melissa}} at Indigo Plateau, and against Ash during the Silver Conference and finally against [[Saturn]] in the last battle against Team Galactic. Two different evolutions, but the same Pokémon! That's what I'm trying to say here! Ash's Infernape is not a different entity from the Monferno that lost against Paul's Electabuzz. Each of Ash's Pokémon that evolved under his ownership in Sinnoh had learned a new move immediately following evolution (except for Gliscor). Not after EACH evolution, just after evolution. It could also be argued that Grotle and Staravia didn't learn new moves after evolution, but they did upon becoming Torterra and Staraptor. Evolution does not make a Pokémon into a completely different being. Ash's Butterfree is still the same Caterpie that was his first capture. Charizard is still the same Charmander Ash saved from an abusive trainer. Bayleef is still the same Chikorita that is in love with Ash, Ambipom is still the same contest-loving Aipom, and Infernape is still the same Monferno that learned Mach Punch immediately after it evolved from Chimchar. The two boys began fighting over who would get to keep the Poké Ball but ended up breaking it in half. Since then, they decided to keep the two separate pieces for themselves. The day he started out on his Pokémon journey, he came off as an arrogant trainer, much like his {{pkmn|game}} counterpart, {{ga|Blue}}. His chosen [[starter Pokémon]] was {{TP|Gary|Squirtle|Blastoise}}, which was actually the same Pokémon that Ash originally wanted to start with. He even had a group of [[Gary's cheerleaders|cheerleaders]] who cheered him on in all his battles and would go so far as crying whenever he lost. And he didn't walk on his journeys like most trainers did. Instead he had his own sporty red convertible with his own chauffeur. Gary loved when he got a chance to make fun of Ash by bragging about how far behind Ash was compared to him. He also gave Ash the pet-name of "Ashy-boy" (Japanese: {{tt|"Satoshi''-kun''"|Satoshi is Ash's Japanese name and ''-kun'' is a Japanese honorific, kun can be considered insulting when not used among friends}}), which occasionally seems to annoy him. His style of training at this point was to capture many Pokémon and to use the strongest, as a stark contrast to Ash who focused on developing a bond with his Pokémon.

Soon he would eat his words when he would challenge the [[Viridian City]] [[Gym Leader]], [[Giovanni]] to a Pokémon battle for his final, but not necessary, badge in ''[[EP063|The Battle of the Badge]]''. At first he seemed to be winning against Giovanni, knocking out most of his Pokémon. But then Giovanni sent out {{an|Mewtwo}} against the trainer and even let Gary use both his {{TP|Gary|Arcanine}} and {{p|Nidoking}} against it. Mewtwo made quick work of the two Pokémon and Gary experienced his first (known) loss. However this still didn't change his arrogance. It would take a loss at the [[Pokémon League]] way later on to finally realize that he needed to change himself.

During his journey, Gary collected badges to compete in the [[Indigo Plateau Conference]] and [[Silver Conference]]. He won ten badges in [[Kanto]], of which he already had five by the [[EP025|twenty-fifth episode]], and showed off the whole set in ''[[EP063|The Battle of the Badge]]'' (though he failed to gain an eleventh badge in that episode when faced against {{an|Mewtwo}}). Of the eight badges that Ash won, Gary only has three: A Boulder Badge, a Cascade Badge, and a Rainbow Badge. Gary is one recurring characters in the [[Electric Tale of Pikachu]] manga. In the manga, Gary is a childhood friend and rival of Ash and frequently appears when Ash does something wrong. Gary has been a neighbor of [[Ash Ketchum]] since they were both young. At one time they seemed to be friends and went to see movies together as seen in ''[[AG086|Lights, Camerupt, Action!]]'' Before either of their journeys began, both Gary and Ash found an old [[Poké Ball]] while fishing. The two boys began fighting over who would get to keep the Poké Ball but ended up breaking it in half. Since then, they decided to keep the two separate pieces for themselves. It was revealed in ''[[EP269|The Ties That Bind]]'' that they still carried the pieces with them.

The day he started out on his Pokémon journey, he came off as an arrogant trainer, much like his {{pkmn|game}} counterpart, {{ga|Blue}}. His chosen [[starter Pokémon]] was {{TP|Gary|Squirtle|Blastoise}}, which was actually the same Pokémon that Ash originally wanted to start with. He even had a group of [[Gary's cheerleaders|cheerleaders]] who cheered him on in all his battles and would go so far as crying whenever he lost. And he didn't walk on his journeys like most trainers did. Instead he had his own sporty red convertible with his own chauffeur. Gary loved when he got a chance to make fun of Ash by bragging about how far behind Ash was compared to him. He also gave Ash the pet-name of "Ashy-boy" (Japanese: {{tt|"Satoshi''-kun''"|Satoshi is Ash's Japanese name and ''-kun'' is a Japanese honorific, kun can be considered insulting when not used among friends}}), which occasionally seems to annoy him. His style of training at this point was to capture many Pokémon and to use the strongest, as a stark contrast to Ash who focused on developing a bond with his Pokémon.

Soon he would eat his words when he would challenge the [[Viridian City]] [[Gym Leader]], [[Giovanni]] to a Pokémon battle for his final, but not necessary, badge in ''[[EP063|The Battle of the Badge]]''. At first he seemed to be winning against Giovanni, knocking out most of his Pokémon. But then Giovanni sent out {{an|Mewtwo}} against the trainer and even let Gary use both his {{TP|Gary|Arcanine}} and {{p|Nidoking}} against it. Mewtwo made quick work of the two Pokémon and Gary experienced his first (known) loss. However this still didn't change his arrogance. It would take a loss at the [[Pokémon League]] way later on to finally realize that he needed to change himself.

Gary eventually returned in ''[[EP115|A Tent Situation]]''. Much unlike his former self, he congratulated Ash on his victory in the [[Orange Crew|Orange League]]. Soon Ash challenged him to a battle with his {{AP|Pikachu}} as his choice. Gary in turn used his {{TP|Gary|Eevee|Umbreon}}. Gary managed to defeat Ash and then left on his journey through [[Johto]].

In his few appearances during the Johto season, he seemed to have become the complete opposite of who he was. He became polite, intelligent, and respectful to others, including Ash. In ''[[EP270|Can't Beat the Heat!]]'' he battled Ash at the [[Silver Conference]]. Ash ended up winning the battle when his {{AP|Charizard}} defeated Gary's Blastoise.

In ''[[EP273|Gotta Catch Ya Later!]]'', Gary decided that he didn't want to be a Pokémon Trainer anymore, but instead wanted to be a [[Pokémon researcher]] like his grandfather.

In ''[[SS015|Putting the Air Back in Aerodactyl]]'', Gary works on [[Sayda Island]] with {{an|Crystal}}. There, he revived an {{p|Aerodactyl}} from an [[Old Amber]]. At first the Aerodactyl was afraid of him and every other person on the island, but Gary soon gained its trust after he fed it some fruit that Aerodactyl used to eat.

Eventually, he moves to the [[Sinnoh]] region where he is currently conducting his research.

In ''[[AG192|Home Is Where The Start Is]]'', Gary reunited with Ash and battled him with his new {{TP|Gary|Electivire}} and defeated Ash's Pikachu once more.

==Synopsis==
Directly from the last episode, [[Ash's Pikachu]] and [[Dawn's Piplup]] use their attacks to breach the tanks holding the {{an|Lake guardians|Lake trio}}. As {{Ash}} and {{ashfr|his friends}} rush to rescue them, [[Mars]]'s {{p|Purugly}} and [[Jupiter]]'s {{p|Skuntank}} push them back with {{m|Iron Tail}} attacks. Pikachu, Piplup and {{TP|Brock|Croagunk}} are distracted, exposing them to Toxicroak's {{m|Sludge Bomb}} attack, putting them down. They then notice the [[Red Chain]] fragments on the Lake trio's foreheads, which [[Cyrus]] and [[Charon]] fill them in, the Pokémon now under the control of the powers of {{p|Arceus|the original one}}. Intending to fill his quest of creating a new world, he walks out with the lake trio, leaving Ash and his friends trapped by [[Team Galactic]].

[[Looker]] and [[Team Rocket]], now disguised as [[Galactic Grunt|Team Galactic grunts]], proceed to take over the entrance to [[Spear Pillar]]. Team Galactic leaves their headquarters via helicopter, keeping Ash and his friends imprisoned. [[Cynthia]] spots the chopper from the ground and follows in her jeep. Looker and Team Rocket neutralize the Galactic grunts and take the entrance just as Team Galactic's chopper sets down. However, Cyrus and his commanders easily see through the disguise, Jupiter's Skuntank attacking them with {{m|Flamethrower}}, putting them in the cell with Ash and his friends.

Outside the gate, [[Saturn]] uses the Spear Key to unlock the gate to [[Spear Pillar]], the key being absorbed into the gate and changing form. Cyrus opens the gate with the Red Chain fragment in his hand, opening the pathway. The path lights up, leading down to Spear Pillar as Cyrus and his men, except for Jupiter, head inside. Moments later, as Jupiter grows bored of having to wait, Skuntank gets hit by a {{m|Dragon Rush}} from [[Cynthia's Garchomp]]. Cynthia confronts her as Garchomp restrains Jupter. Cynthia frees Ash and his friends, locking down Jupiter and the Galactic grunts. Though Jupter insists it is too late, Ash and his friends proceed into Spear Pillar to stop Cyrus.

Inside Spear Pillar, Cyrus and his men reach their destination, placing the {{DL|Type-enhancing item|Adamant Orb|Adamant}} and {{DL|Type-enhancing item|Lustrous Orb}}s, as well as the Lake trio, in position around the ancient ruins. Cyrus uses the power of the Red Chain to force the lake trio to use their energies to power the orbs and begin to summon {{p|Dialga}} and {{p|Palkia}}. Charon fires two Red Chains around the formation as two mystical energy portals take shape, their powers quickly causing disturbances around [[Mt. Coronet]], which [[Professor Rowan]] and {{Gary}} pick up from their lab. Dialga and Palkia start to appear at Spear Pillar, the Red Chains quickly taking control of both. Pikachu, Piplup, and Croagunk fly in on {{AP|Staraptor}}, Garchomp and {{AP|Gliscor}}, destroying the cannon. Saturn sends out Toxicroak, but Croagunk quickly knocks it down with a {{m|Brick Break}} to the head, settling its rivalry.

Though Cynthia is awed to meet the lake trio, she never wanted to see it this way. Mars sends out Purugly and the Grunts send out {{p|Golbat}}, but Pikachu and Piplup easily put them down, allowing Ash and his friends to proceed. Pikachu, Piplup and Croagunk free the Lake trio, destroying the Red Chain fragments on their foreheads. Ash, {{an|Dawn}} and {{an|Brock}} retrieve the lake trio as Dialga and Palkia start to disappear. It appeasrs Cyrus has lost, but he uses more of the Red Chain power to fully summon Dialga and Palika. The {{OBP|Pokémon|species}} strain under the power of the Red Chain as it takes control of them.

The lake trio Pokémon draw into their powers as they telepatchially ask Ash and his friends to free Dialga and Palkia. Cyrus orders the [[legendary Pokémon]] to use their powers, creating a portal into another dimension, the effects causing massive disturbances around Mt. Coronet. Ash and his friends try to attack the Red Chains holding Dialga and Palika, but Cyrus has the legendary Pokémon use their [[signature move]]s to stop Pikachu, Piplup, Croagunk and Garchomp's attacks. Dialga's {{m|Roar of Time}} also proceeds to strike Ash and his friends, but the lake trio blocks the attack.

Saturn and Mars want to go into the new world with Cyrus, but he turns on them, revealing his true intention of having the new world to himself. Ash and his friends attack again, this time destroying the Red Chains and freeing Dialga and Palika. The portal begins to disappear, but Cyrus walks up and gets drawn into it before it fades. Mars freaks out and wants to go too, but Saturn holds her back as the portal disappears.

However, Dialga and Palkia continue to rampage, creating massive energy that threatens to envelop the [[Sinnoh]] [[region]]. Cynthia warns them of the impending danger as the lake trio pleads with Ash and his friends to do what they can. One by one, the lake trio Pokémon use their energies to calm Dialga and Palkia before creating a portal that sends them back to their isolated dimensions, reversing the energy levels and clearing the area around Mt. Coronet.

The lake trio celebrates with Ash and his friends before disappearing. Back at the surface, Professor Rowan and Gary arrive. The Adamant and Lustrous orbs are secured as Gary decides to take them back to [[Professor Carolina]]. While Team Rocket makes their getaway, the police take away Saturn, Jupiter and Mars. Cynthia thanks Ash and his friends for saving Sinnoh as they continue on their journey.

Gary has been a neighbor of [[Ash Ketchum]] since they were both young. At one time they seemed to be friends and went to see movies together as seen in ''[[AG086|Lights, Camerupt, Action!]]'' Before either of their journeys began, both Gary and Ash found an old [[Poké Ball]] while fishing. The two boys began fighting over who would get to keep the Poké Ball but ended up breaking it in half. Since then, they decided to keep the two separate pieces for themselves. It was revealed in ''[[EP269|The Ties That Bind]]'' that they still carried the pieces with them.

The day he started out on his Pokémon journey, he came off as an arrogant trainer, much like his {{pkmn|game}} counterpart, {{ga|Blue}}. His chosen [[starter Pokémon]] was {{TP|Gary|Squirtle|Blastoise}}, which was actually the same Pokémon that Ash originally wanted to start with. He even had a group of [[Gary's cheerleaders|cheerleaders]] who cheered him on in all his battles and would go so far as crying whenever he lost. And he didn't walk on his journeys like most trainers did. Instead he had his own sporty red convertible with his own chauffeur. Gary loved when he got a chance to make fun of Ash by bragging about how far behind Ash was compared to him. He also gave Ash the pet-name of "Ashy-boy" (Japanese: {{tt|"Satoshi''-kun''"|Satoshi is Ash's Japanese name and ''-kun'' is a Japanese honorific, kun can be considered insulting when not used among friends}}), which occasionally seems to annoy him. His style of training at this point was to capture many Pokémon and to use the strongest, as a stark contrast to Ash who focused on developing a bond with his Pokémon.

Soon he would eat his words when he would challenge the [[Viridian City]] [[Gym Leader]], [[Giovanni]] to a Pokémon battle for his final, but not necessary, badge in ''[[EP063|The Battle of the Badge]]''. At first he seemed to be winning against Giovanni, knocking out most of his Pokémon. But then Giovanni sent out {{an|Mewtwo}} against the trainer and even let Gary use both his {{TP|Gary|Arcanine}} and {{p|Nidoking}} against it. Mewtwo made quick work of the two Pokémon and Gary experienced his first (known) loss. However this still didn't change his arrogance. It would take a loss at the [[Pokémon League]] way later on to finally realize that he needed to change himself.

Gary eventually returned in ''[[EP115|A Tent Situation]]''. Much unlike his former self, he congratulated Ash on his victory in the [[Orange Crew|Orange League]]. Soon Ash challenged him to a battle with his {{AP|Pikachu}} as his choice. Gary in turn used his {{TP|Gary|Eevee|Umbreon}}. Gary managed to defeat Ash and then left on his journey through [[Johto]].

During his journey, Gary collected badges to compete in the [[Indigo Plateau Conference]] and [[Silver Conference]]. He won ten badges in [[Kanto]], of which he already had five by the [[EP025|twenty-fifth episode]], and showed off the whole set in ''[[EP063|The Battle of the Badge]]'' (though he failed to gain an eleventh badge in that episode when faced against {{an|Mewtwo}}). Of the eight badges that Ash won, Gary only has three: A Boulder Badge, a Cascade Badge, and a Rainbow Badge. Gary has been a neighbor of [[Ash Ketchum]] since they were both young. At one time they seemed to be friends and went to see movies together as seen in ''[[AG086|Lights, Camerupt, Action!]]'' Before either of their journeys began, both Gary and Ash found an old [[Poké Ball]] while fishing. The two boys began fighting over who would get to keep the Poké Ball but ended up breaking it in half. Since then, they decided to keep the two separate pieces for themselves. It was revealed in ''[[EP269|The Ties That Bind]]'' that they still carried the pieces with them.

The day he started out on his Pokémon journey, he came off as an arrogant trainer, much like his {{pkmn|game}} counterpart, {{ga|Blue}}. His chosen [[starter Pokémon]] was {{TP|Gary|Squirtle|Blastoise}}, which was actually the same Pokémon that Ash originally wanted to start with. He even had a group of [[Gary's cheerleaders|cheerleaders]] who cheered him on in all his battles and would go so far as crying whenever he lost. And he didn't walk on his journeys like most trainers did. Instead he had his own sporty red convertible with his own chauffeur. Gary loved when he got a chance to make fun of Ash by bragging about how far behind Ash was compared to him. He also gave Ash the pet-name of "Ashy-boy" (Japanese: {{tt|"Satoshi''-kun''"|Satoshi is Ash's Japanese name and ''-kun'' is a Japanese honorific, kun can be considered insulting when not used among friends}}), which occasionally seems to annoy him. His style of training at this point was to capture many Pokémon and to use the strongest, as a stark contrast to Ash who focused on developing a bond with his Pokémon.

Soon he would eat his words when he would challenge the [[Viridian City]] [[Gym Leader]], [[Giovanni]] to a Pokémon battle for his final, but not necessary, badge in ''[[EP063|The Battle of the Badge]]''. At first he seemed to be winning against Giovanni, knocking out most of his Pokémon. But then Giovanni sent out {{an|Mewtwo}} against the trainer and even let Gary use both his {{TP|Gary|Arcanine}} and {{p|Nidoking}} against it. Mewtwo made quick work of the two Pokémon and Gary experienced his first (known) loss. However this still didn't change his arrogance. It would take a loss at the [[Pokémon League]] way later on to finally realize that he needed to change himself.

Gary eventually returned in ''[[EP115|A Tent Situation]]''. Much unlike his former self, he congratulated Ash on his victory in the [[Orange Crew|Orange League]]. Soon Ash challenged him to a battle with his {{AP|Pikachu}} as his choice. Gary in turn used his {{TP|Gary|Eevee|Umbreon}}. Gary managed to defeat Ash and then left on his journey through [[Johto]].

In his few appearances during the Johto season, he seemed to have become the complete opposite of who he was. He became polite, intelligent, and respectful to others, including Ash. In ''[[EP270|Can't Beat the Heat!]]'' he battled Ash at the [[Silver Conference]]. Ash ended up winning the battle when his {{AP|Charizard}} defeated Gary's Blastoise.

In ''[[EP273|Gotta Catch Ya Later!]]'', Gary decided that he didn't want to be a Pokémon Trainer anymore, but instead wanted to be a [[Pokémon researcher]] like his grandfather.

At first the Aerodactyl was afraid of him and every other person on the island, but Gary soon gained its trust after he fed it some fruit that Aerodactyl used to eat.

Eventually, he moves to the [[Sinnoh]] region where he is currently conducting his research.

In ''[[AG192|Home Is Where The Start Is]]'', Gary reunited with Ash and battled him with his new {{TP|Gary|Electivire}} and defeated Ash's Pikachu once more.

During his journey, Gary collected badges to compete in the [[Indigo Plateau Conference]] and [[Silver Conference]]. He won ten badges in [[Kanto]], of which he already had five by the [[EP025|twenty-fifth episode]], and showed off the whole set in ''[[EP063|The Battle of the Badge]]'' (though he failed to gain an eleventh badge in that episode when faced against {{an|Mewtwo}}). Of the eight badges that Ash won, Gary only has three: A Boulder Badge, a Cascade Badge, and a Rainbow Badge. The other seven are unknown, but aside from the Earth Badge, he didn't get a Thunder Badge, Marsh Badge, Soul Badge, or Volcano Badge.

Gary's achievements in [[Johto]] were not stated, other than that he had the minimum of eight badges to compete in the tournament.

At one time they seemed to be friends and went to see movies together as seen in ''[[AG086|Lights, Camerupt, Action!]]'' Before either of their journeys began, both Gary and Ash found an old [[Poké Ball]] while fishing. The two boys began fighting over who would get to keep the Poké Ball but ended up breaking it in half. Since then, they decided to keep the two separate pieces for themselves. It was revealed in ''[[EP269|The Ties That Bind]]'' that they still carried the pieces with them.

The day he started out on his Pokémon journey, he came off as an arrogant trainer, much like his {{pkmn|game}} counterpart, {{ga|Blue}}. His chosen [[starter Pokémon]] was {{TP|Gary|Squirtle|Blastoise}}, which was actually the same Pokémon that Ash originally wanted to start with. He even had a group of [[Gary's cheerleaders|cheerleaders]] who cheered him on in all his battles and would go so far as crying whenever he lost. And he didn't walk on his journeys like most trainers did. Instead he had his own sporty red convertible with his own chauffeur. Gary loved when he got a chance to make fun of Ash by bragging about how far behind Ash was compared to him. He also gave Ash the pet-name of "Ashy-boy" (Japanese: {{tt|"Satoshi''-kun''"|Satoshi is Ash's Japanese name and ''-kun'' is a Japanese honorific, kun can be considered insulting when not used among friends}}), which occasionally seems to annoy him. His style of training at this point was to capture many Pokémon and to use the strongest, as a stark contrast to Ash who focused on developing a bond with his Pokémon.

Soon he would eat his words when he would challenge the [[Viridian City]] [[Gym Leader]], [[Giovanni]] to a Pokémon battle for his final, but not necessary, badge in ''[[EP063|The Battle of the Badge]]''. At first he seemed to be winning against Giovanni, knocking out most of his Pokémon. But then Giovanni sent out {{an|Mewtwo}} against the trainer and even let Gary use both his {{TP|Gary|Arcanine}} and {{p|Nidoking}} against it. Mewtwo made quick work of the two Pokémon and Gary experienced his first (known) loss. However this still didn't change his arrogance. It would take a loss at the [[Pokémon League]] way later on to finally realize that he needed to change himself.

Gary eventually returned in ''[[EP115|A Tent Situation]]''. Much unlike his former self, he congratulated Ash on his victory in the [[Orange Crew|Orange League]]. At first the Aerodactyl was afraid of him and every other person on the island, but Gary soon gained its trust after he fed it some fruit that Aerodactyl used to eat.

He won ten badges in [[Kanto]], of which he already had five by the [[EP025|twenty-fifth episode]], and showed off the whole set in ''[[EP063|The Battle of the Badge]]'' (though he failed to gain an eleventh badge in that episode when faced against {{an|Mewtwo}}). Gary has been a neighbor of [[Ash Ketchum]] since they were both young. At one time they seemed to be friends and went to see movies together as seen in ''[[AG086|Lights, Camerupt, Action!]]'' Before either of their journeys began, both Gary and Ash found an old [[Poké Ball]] while fishing. The two boys began fighting over who would get to keep the Poké Ball but ended up breaking it in half. Since then, they decided to keep the two separate pieces for themselves. It was revealed in ''[[EP269|The Ties That Bind]]'' that they still carried the pieces with them.

The day he started out on his Pokémon journey, he came off as an arrogant trainer, much like his {{pkmn|game}} counterpart, {{ga|Blue}}. His chosen [[starter Pokémon]] was {{TP|Gary|Squirtle|Blastoise}}, which was actually the same Pokémon that Ash originally wanted to start with. He even had a group of [[Gary's cheerleaders|cheerleaders]] who cheered him on in all his battles and would go so far as crying whenever he lost. And he didn't walk on his journeys like most trainers did. Instead he had his own sporty red convertible with his own chauffeur. Gary loved when he got a chance to make fun of Ash by bragging about how far behind Ash was compared to him. He also gave Ash the pet-name of "Ashy-boy" (Japanese: {{tt|"Satoshi''-kun''"|Satoshi is Ash's Japanese name and ''-kun'' is a Japanese honorific, kun can be considered insulting when not used among friends}}), which occasionally seems to annoy him. His style of training at this point was to capture many Pokémon and to use the strongest, as a stark contrast to Ash who focused on developing a bond with his Pokémon.

Soon he would eat his words when he would challenge the [[Viridian City]] [[Gym Leader]], [[Giovanni]] to a Pokémon battle for his final, but not necessary, badge in ''[[EP063|The Battle of the Badge]]''. At first he seemed to be winning against Giovanni, knocking out most of his Pokémon. But then Giovanni sent out {{an|Mewtwo}} against the trainer and even let Gary use both his {{TP|Gary|Arcanine}} and {{p|Nidoking}} against it. Mewtwo made quick work of the two Pokémon and Gary experienced his first (known) loss. However this still didn't change his arrogance. It would take a loss at the [[Pokémon League]] way later on to finally realize that he needed to change himself.

Gary eventually returned in ''[[EP115|A Tent Situation]]''. Much unlike his former self, he congratulated Ash on his victory in the [[Orange Crew|Orange League]]. Soon Ash challenged him to a battle with his {{AP|Pikachu}} as his choice. Gary in turn used his {{TP|Gary|Eevee|Umbreon}}. Gary managed to defeat Ash and then left on his journey through [[Johto]].

In his few appearances during the Johto season, he seemed to have become the complete opposite of who he was. He became polite, intelligent, and respectful to others, including Ash. In ''[[EP270|Can't Beat the Heat!]]'' he battled Ash at the [[Silver Conference]]. Ash ended up winning the battle when his {{AP|Charizard}} defeated Gary's Blastoise.

At first the Aerodactyl was afraid of him and every other person on the island, but Gary soon gained its trust after he fed it some fruit that Aerodactyl used to eat.

Eventually, he moves to the [[Sinnoh]] region where he is currently conducting his research.

In ''[[AG192|Home Is Where The Start Is]]'', Gary reunited with Ash and battled him with his new {{TP|Gary|Electivire}} and defeated Ash's Pikachu once more.

During his journey, Gary collected badges to compete in the [[Indigo Plateau Conference]] and [[Silver Conference]]. He won ten badges in [[Kanto]], of which he already had five by the [[EP025|twenty-fifth episode]], and showed off the whole set in ''[[EP063|The Battle of the Badge]]'' (though he failed to gain an eleventh badge in that episode when faced against {{an|Mewtwo}}). Of the eight badges that Ash won, Gary only has three: A Boulder Badge, a Cascade Badge, and a Rainbow Badge. The other seven are unknown, but aside from the Earth Badge, he didn't get a Thunder Badge, Marsh Badge, Soul Badge, or Volcano Badge.

Gary's achievements in [[Johto]] were not stated, other than that he had the minimum of eight badges to compete in the tournament.

Gary is one recurring characters in [[Electric Tale of Pikachu]] manga. In the manga, Gary is childhood friend and rival of Ash and frequently appears when Ash does something wrong. At the Pokémon League he is defeated by [[Ritchie]], but confronts Ash at the end of the series. His sister, [[Daisy Oak|May]], who is not present in the anime, also appears.
