==Generation I==
The Generation I Cloning (discovered in 1999) is extremely hazardous, due to the risk of corruption of the data if done wrong. It must be done with an "incomplete trade" (this deletes a Pokémon). The steps are the following:

#Catch a Pokémon to sacrifice (in the game that doesn't have the Pokémon that you want to clone), preferably a weak and common one (a {{p|Pidgey}} or {{p|Rattata}} will do).
#Get in the Cable Club. Select the weak Pokémon to be traded with the Pokémon to clone. Begin the transfer like normally. Wait for the animations to finish.
#When the Message "WAIT..." disappears, and just before "TRANSFER COMPLETE!" appears, turn off the game that originally had the Pokémon you want to clone.
#The other game will be locked up and the weak Pokémon will be deleted.
#After turning the games on again, both players will have the same Pokémon in their respective parties.

==Generation II==
The most common way for it to be done in the [[Pokémon Gold and Silver]] versions is as follows:

#Save the game.
#Deposit the Pokémon that is going to be cloned.
#Switch boxes to any box.
#When it says "Do you want to overwrite saved data?" select yes. ''However'', while the capitalized word "SAVING" is on the screen, shut the game off. If the timing is off, saved data could be erased. However, as long as the game is turned off from around the time "SAVE" is on the screen to when the word "POWER" is shown, the game will be fine.
#Turn the game back on, and there should be the original Pokémon in the party, and a copy of it in the box. If the Pokémon was holding an [[item]], that item will also be cloned.

Shutting the game off while saving in the Box Change makes the game to save the changes inside the PC, but not outside. So, the player's party and items will be the way they were at the last place the player saved, but the PC will keep the changes the player had just made.

This lets the player do a variety of massive tricks like cloning five Pokémon at the same time; or get the three starter Pokémon (though it's dangerous to do) saving, starting a new game and avoiding saving until the player can deposit your Pokémon in the PC, then do the "save trick", and when turning on again, the player will have the Pokémon stored at PC (It's better to do this with a just started game due to the risk of deleting all the Pokémon in the box you use, or even in all the PC)

This method is only available for use in [[Pokémon Emerald]]. It can only be accessed after the player has beaten the [[Elite Four]], as it requires that they are able to visit the [[Battle Frontier]]. Once the player is at the Battle Frontier they must do as follows:

# Go to the [[Battle Frontier#Battle Tower|Battle Tower]].
# Deposit the Pokémon that will be cloned into a box, preferably an empty one.
# Save the game through the normal method.
# Withdraw the Pokémon from the box. Make sure that you don't deposit any Pokémon during this step because you will most definitely lose it!
# Talk to the nearest receptionist to the PC.
# Enter any competition, and when the lady asks you to save, select "Yes". There should be a short pause before the real save screen appears. Restart the game system '''after''' the pause. If one restarts during the pause, it may corrupt one's save data, and there is a slight chance of losing ones file. If a player allows the game to save, then the cloning will not work.

Once the game is powered on again, the player will appear in front of the receptionist. This is because the game has saved data during the short pause, and once game play has started again, the player can check their [[party]] and the PC box, and both will have the cloned Pokémon they chose. This method is 100% data corruption-free as long as the steps are followed correctly. Items may be duplicated in this method by having a Pokémon hold the item. Items may also be duplicated by having Pokémon in the PC hold the item before saving, taking the item from them, then performing the glitch. The result is having the item(s) in the inventory, but a copy of them still being on the Pokémon in the PC. This method is probably the most efficient of all the methods.

==Generation IV ==

There is a way to clone Pokémon in the English version of Diamond and Pearl.

# Login to Nintendo Wi-Fi connection.
# Select and deposit the Pokémon that is going to be cloned.
# Choose an impossible or unlikely Pokémon as the request, such as level 9 or under Dialga, etc.
# When the player check the GTS status pay close attention to the little clock on the screen, when it has gone around about eight and a half times turn the DS off. The time will vary depending on how far away the Nintendo DS is from the wireless router (or USB connector) and how fast the player's internet connection is.
# Turn the DS back on, a box should come up saying that the save file is corrupted. (This is normal.)
# Load the game and login to Wi-Fi again. If done correctly the Pokémon will be in the GTS and the game.
# Take the Pokémon off GTS.

The timing must be exact, so it's suggested that a timer be used to count down 12 seconds at first before turning off the game, and then add 1 second each time it doesn't work, until it eventually works. It can sometimes be just milliseconds off and still not work, not to mention the timing changes every once in a while, so it's very difficult to do.

However, there is a more reliable way of judging the timing needed for cloning. For people who can see their wireless routers, most wireless routers should have a light which says "WLAN", which blinks when there is online activity detected.

# Login to Nintendo Wi-Fi connection.
# Select and deposit the Pokémon that is going to be cloned.

# Load the game and login to Wi-Fi again. If done correctly the Pokémon will be in the GTS and the game.

Although the timings might vary slightly with connection strength and the brand of wireless routers, it serves as a rough guide of time. Even if the timing is off, as long as the DS is turned off somewhere around the time, the Pokémon will return to the PC with no damage to the save file.

The User Space was locked back in March, and though TTEchidna kept promising it would be "just another week" before they got everything figured out, it's been several months by now. I think most of us just aren't getting our hopes up. You're familiar with the problem, right? People were editing their userpages so much that 1) The server was bogged down with their edits, and 2) They were ignoring the main space. They locked down the userspace to stop this, and it's worked pretty well so far. The admins aren't cruel, though (certain April Fool's jokes aside), and they're trying to get them back by limiting the number of times we could edit them per day. The problem is, there's no way to prevent users from editing their userspaces too much short of manually policing their edits and stopping them when they go too far. So it'll probably be a while yet before they can figure something out. <strike>In the meantime, some people are putting content they would put on their user page on their user talk page to be moved later. While this seems OK to me, don't do it too much.</strike> If people start editing their talk pages as much as they used to edit their user pages, those'll get blocked as well, and that'd ''really'' cause trouble for us. That said, the image part of the box you created is twice as long as most others as a result of having two images, so maybe you should reduce their size so they mesh better with the other boxes. :Just open a new window or tab. You can find the userboxes with one, and edit them into your page with the other. Both [[wp:Safari (web browser)|Safari]] and {{wp|Mozilla Firefox}}, as well as countless other browsers, support multiple tabs, so if you don't have one of those, get whichever is more appropriate for your OS.
:Now. I 'm glad you're limiting yourself to five edits a day. If everyone had done that three months ago, we wouldn't have a userspace edit ban at all. BUT. Even that is going to get you in trouble, so here's what I suggest. You don't have to put anything on a page ''at all''. You can put the wikicode into a '''text file''' and save that to your computer. Then you can edit the text file all you want, without causing any trouble for the server. When you need to preview it, go to the {{bp|sandbox}}, copy the code from the text file into the sandbox, and just hit "show preview." If something needs changing, change it and preview it again until it's fixed. In the end, you don't even have to save the changes in the sandbox; just save everything in the text document once you're done. The server doesn't have to deal with the changes, and you won't have anyone yelling at you for making them. I've done this with my own user page, as well as a page full of [[Pokémon Gold and Silver remakes|GSDS]] predictions, so I can make a total of two edits after the ban is lifted and I'll be done for a long time.

I think most of us just aren't getting our hopes up. You're familiar with the problem, right? People were editing their userpages so much that 1) The server was bogged down with their edits, and 2) They were ignoring the main space. They locked down the userspace to stop this, and it's worked pretty well so far. The admins aren't cruel, though (certain April Fool's jokes aside), and they're trying to get them back by limiting the number of times we could edit them per day. The problem is, there's no way to prevent users from editing their userspaces too much short of manually policing their edits and stopping them when they go too far. So it'll probably be a while yet before they can figure something out. <strike>In the meantime, some people are putting content they would put on their user page on their user talk page to be moved later. While this seems OK to me, don't do it too much.</strike> If people start editing their talk pages as much as they used to edit their user pages, those'll get blocked as well, and that'd ''really'' cause trouble for us. That said, the image part of the box you created is twice as long as most others as a result of having two images, so maybe you should reduce their size so they mesh better with the other boxes. :Just open a new window or tab. You can find the userboxes with one, and edit them into your page with the other. Both [[wp:Safari (web browser)|Safari]] and {{wp|Mozilla Firefox}}, as well as countless other browsers, support multiple tabs, so if you don't have one of those, get whichever is more appropriate for your OS.
:Now. I 'm glad you're limiting yourself to five edits a day. If everyone had done that three months ago, we wouldn't have a userspace edit ban at all. BUT. Even that is going to get you in trouble, so here's what I suggest. You don't have to put anything on a page ''at all''. You can put the wikicode into a '''text file''' and save that to your computer. Then you can edit the text file all you want, without causing any trouble for the server. When you need to preview it, go to the {{bp|sandbox}}, copy the code from the text file into the sandbox, and just hit "show preview." If something needs changing, change it and preview it again until it's fixed. In the end, you don't even have to save the changes in the sandbox; just save everything in the text document once you're done. The server doesn't have to deal with the changes, and you won't have anyone yelling at you for making them. I've done this with my own user page, as well as a page full of [[Pokémon Gold and Silver remakes|GSDS]] predictions, so I can make a total of two edits after the ban is lifted and I'll be done for a long time.

People were editing their userpages so much that 1) The server was bogged down with their edits, and 2) They were ignoring the main space. They locked down the userspace to stop this, and it's worked pretty well so far. The admins aren't cruel, though (certain April Fool's jokes aside), and they're trying to get them back by limiting the number of times we could edit them per day. The problem is, there's no way to prevent users from editing their userspaces too much short of manually policing their edits and stopping them when they go too far. So it'll probably be a while yet before they can figure something out. <strike>In the meantime, some people are putting content they would put on their user page on their user talk page to be moved later. While this seems OK to me, don't do it too much.</strike> If people start editing their talk pages as much as they used to edit their user pages, those'll get blocked as well, and that'd ''really'' cause trouble for us. That said, the image part of the box you created is twice as long as most others as a result of having two images, so maybe you should reduce their size so they mesh better with the other boxes. :Just open a new window or tab. You can find the userboxes with one, and edit them into your page with the other. Both [[wp:Safari (web browser)|Safari]] and {{wp|Mozilla Firefox}}, as well as countless other browsers, support multiple tabs, so if you don't have one of those, get whichever is more appropriate for your OS.
:Now. I 'm glad you're limiting yourself to five edits a day. If everyone had done that three months ago, we wouldn't have a userspace edit ban at all. BUT. Even that is going to get you in trouble, so here's what I suggest. You don't have to put anything on a page ''at all''. You can put the wikicode into a '''text file''' and save that to your computer. Then you can edit the text file all you want, without causing any trouble for the server. When you need to preview it, go to the {{bp|sandbox}}, copy the code from the text file into the sandbox, and just hit "show preview." If something needs changing, change it and preview it again until it's fixed. In the end, you don't even have to save the changes in the sandbox; just save everything in the text document once you're done. The server doesn't have to deal with the changes, and you won't have anyone yelling at you for making them. I've done this with my own user page, as well as a page full of [[Pokémon Gold and Silver remakes|GSDS]] predictions, so I can make a total of two edits after the ban is lifted and I'll be done for a long time.

The User Space was locked back in March, and though TTEchidna kept promising it would be "just another week" before they got everything figured out, it's been several months by now. I think most of us just aren't getting our hopes up. You're familiar with the problem, right? People were editing their userpages so much that 1) The server was bogged down with their edits, and 2) They were ignoring the main space. They locked down the userspace to stop this, and it's worked pretty well so far. The admins aren't cruel, though (certain April Fool's jokes aside), and they're trying to get them back by limiting the number of times we could edit them per day. The problem is, there's no way to prevent users from editing their userspaces too much short of manually policing their edits and stopping them when they go too far. That said, the image part of the box you created is twice as long as most others as a result of having two images, so maybe you should reduce their size so they mesh better with the other boxes. :Just open a new window or tab. You can find the userboxes with one, and edit them into your page with the other. Both [[wp:Safari (web browser)|Safari]] and {{wp|Mozilla Firefox}}, as well as countless other browsers, support multiple tabs, so if you don't have one of those, get whichever is more appropriate for your OS.
:Now. I 'm glad you're limiting yourself to five edits a day. If everyone had done that three months ago, we wouldn't have a userspace edit ban at all. BUT. Even that is going to get you in trouble, so here's what I suggest. You don't have to put anything on a page ''at all''. You can put the wikicode into a '''text file''' and save that to your computer. Then you can edit the text file all you want, without causing any trouble for the server. When you need to preview it, go to the {{bp|sandbox}}, copy the code from the text file into the sandbox, and just hit "show preview." If something needs changing, change it and preview it again until it's fixed. In the end, you don't even have to save the changes in the sandbox; just save everything in the text document once you're done. The server doesn't have to deal with the changes, and you won't have anyone yelling at you for making them. I've done this with my own user page, as well as a page full of [[Pokémon Gold and Silver remakes|GSDS]] predictions, so I can make a total of two edits after the ban is lifted and I'll be done for a long time.

==Diamond & Pearl Cloning==
In diamond and pearl, there seems to be a cloning glitch via GTS. Here are the steps from what I've heard from on the serebii.net forums.

1: Log onto wi-fi via GTS
2: Offer pokemon on the GTS
3: While it gives the waiting message, look at the bottom right at the clock on the message. When it turns 7 and a half times, turn off the DS.
4: Go back to the GTS. There should be a clone on the GTS, waiting to be traded and one where it was originally.

I, myself, haven't done this, but people on the forums claim that it works.

Oh wow, I just found this site and I have something that I've been wanting to share about generation 2 cloning for a while now. Okay here's my story (I have a witness to it but frankly, believe it or not, I dont really care): One day I was cloning my suicune and wanted to see if I could clone more than one pokemon by just depositing another with it. Sure enough it worked. The other pokemon was a tyrogue. So here I was, with 2 tyrogues and 2 suicunes. I decided to go train one of them to evolve them into a Hitmontop (which I had really wanted). So I started leveling it up, and this is where the strange stuff begins. It began learning the moveset of my suicune! I don't know why but I specifically remember it only learning suicune moves. It was on pokemon crystal that I tried this. Since then my crystal version (along with my gold and 2 silvers) has stopped working for no apparent reason. I don't remember if I did some extra step or something as it was done 3 or so years back... Any info on what happened to me would be much appreciated. -PyroSprite-

== Generation II Cloning ==

I was once able to clone a Pokemon with a Generation II game using the Generation I cloning trick (the one with the link cable). It works if the Pokemon that is being cloned is being transferred from a Gen 2 to a Gen 1 game, not the other way around. The Gen 2 games were designed to combat the glitch so that if the other player shuts off the trade prematurely, it doesn't go though. But the Gen 1 maintains the glitch no matter what game you are using. It also worked once between two Gen 2 games because our link cable was faulty.
