Vermilion City
The path to the Gym is blocked off by an overgrown tree, meaning that it is currently off-limits to Trainers who do not have HM01. Talk to the girl in the Poké Center to obtain the List of key items in Generation III, a device that indicates any nearby Trainers that want a rematch. After checking out the local attractions, go south to the harbor to board the luxury cruise-liner, S.S. Anne.

Fishing Guru #1
Visit the house to the left of the Poké Center and talk to the fishing enthusiast inside. Convince him that you love fishing as much as he does, and he'll give you the Fishing. The only fish weak enough to be caught with this is Magikarp, but at least you can find them for free now. The Good Rod and Super Rod are better, but Trainers won't find those until later.

Pokémon Fan Club
The building just north of the Gym is the Pokémon Fan Club. Listen to the Chairman's rambling thoughts, and he'll give you a List of key items in Generation III for your time. Show this ticket at the Bike Shop in Cerulean City to finally get a free bike!

Another Trade
If you've got a Spearow you're willing to part with, bring it to the house next to the Fan Club. A little girl inside will offer to trade her Farfetch'd for it. Not bad, since this is the only Farfetch'd in the game.
Once you're done here, head back to the entrance (and heal up by talking to the woman in Room 6 if necessary). Walk to the left (ignore the first set of stairs), and then down to reach the cafeteria. Check the three trash cans along the east wall to find Pecha, Cheri, and Chesto berries. Grab the Great Ball in the southwest corner, as well. Leave the cafeteria, and walk straight up to the next set of stairs. Head down (you can take the closest stairs to the shipdeck for two Trainer battles for extra EXP) and then right to find the last few rooms of Trainers on the ship, with the Captain's room at the end.
After the battle, he taunts you again and runs off. Now you're free to visit the Captain. When you enter his room, you find him hunched over a trash can - it looks like the Captain got seasick. Not to worry, all it takes is a quick backrub to quell his stomach, and the Captain rewards you with 01. With this, you'll finally be able to cut down those overgrown trees to reach new areas. After helping the Captain, there's nothing left to do on the ship, so it's time to head back to the city. As you disembark, the ferry glides out of port, so don't miss any items.
It's finally time for the next Gym battle. Use HM01 to teach one of your Pokémon how to cut the tree out of the way in order to enter the Gym. The Vermilion Gym focuses on Electrics, so Grounds like Geodude and Sandshrew are best here, since they're immune to electrical attacks. Trainers lacking a Ground-type should head east from Vermilion and step inside Diglett's Cave just outside the city; many Diglett and even a few Dugtrio are easily found here. Your own Electric- and Grass-types are also somewhat immune, but avoid bringing any Flying- and Water-types. <br><br>
Lt. Surge has set a trap in his Gym - Trainers must flip two switches that are hidden randomly inside the trash cans to open the doors to the Gym Leader. After finding the first switch, the second will be directly next to it. If you don't flip them both in a row, the trap will reset, and you'll have to hunt them down again.
First, make sure to visit the Poké Center to heal up from the trek through the forest. The two houses here don't hold anything important, but the Poké Mart does! This is the first city to sell Potions, so make sure to buy a few for the upcoming Gym battle. Trainers won't be able to head east yet, since the kid at the edge of the city will drag them to the Gym if they try to leave. There isn't much else to do right now, so get ready for your first upcoming gym battle!

Pewter Museum of Science
The Pewter Museum of Science is located on the north side of the city. It hosts a wide range of artifacts and exhibits, with a focus on fossil excavation and space exploration. Admission to the main building is pdollar50 for a child's ticket. The second smaller building is closed to the public, but if Trainers return later and cut past the tree, the lead scientist there will give you the Old Amber; take it to Cinnabar Island, and the scientists there can resurrect an ancient Aerodactyl.

The Pewter Gym focuses on the Rock, so Trainers that chose Bulbasaur or Squirtle will be in good shape. Teams with Charmander may have some trouble here, since Fires can't do much damage against Rock-types. Trainers with Charmander would be well-advised to bring a Mankey from 22, since Fighting moves are super-effective against the Rock-type. Teaching Metal Claw to Charmander can help, but try not to be too dependent on it, especially since the Sandshrew that the gym trainer has is a Ground type, which is not weak to Fighting or Steel, and Ground is super effective against Fire. Bring a few Potions, and enter the first Gym.
The next point of interest is the Poké Center. There's a bald guy in front of the stairs that will offer Trainers a Magikarp for pdollar500. The fish itself isn't a great Water choice, since it can only splash around until level 15, but with enough training it will evolve into Gyarados at level 20 (with much better stats and moves) which can help with the upcoming Gym match in Cerulean City. It's a Trainer's choice whether to fork over the money for the fish or not, since they are found almost everywhere with the Old Rod later on. Heal up and head into Mt. Moon.

Mt. Moon
Mt. Moon isn't a very tough cave to get through, especially if a Trainer's team is around level 15 by now. There is also a handful of new cave-dwelling Pokémon for novice Trainers to find.
This is a good training ground for Pokémon who have a move Paras is weak against, but be aware of it's Effect Spore ability has a chance of causing a status condition from a physical contact move.

Beyond him is a Super Nerd that claims both the nearby fossils as his own. After beating him, he compromises, offering Trainers a choice between the two ancient relics. Like the Old Amber in Pewter City, there is enough preserved genetic material for the scientists on Cinnabar Island to revive a prehistoric Pokémon. The Dome Fossil becomes a Kabuto, while the Helix Fossil turns into an Omanyte; both become -types. Since it's only possible to obtain one, players will need to trade to receive the other. After the trek through Mt. Moon, 4 will seem like a walk in the park. There are no Trainers here, and only a small patch of grass to the south. There is a pair of move tutors on the northwest hill; the left tutor will offer to teach a Pokémon the move Mega Punch, while the tutor on the right would be happy to teach Mega Kick to a Pokémon. Continue east to pick up 05, then head south and jump the ledge into the tall grass (after doing so, Trainers won't be able to backtrack through Mt. Moon). This is a handy location to train before battling Misty. Once the player's team is around level 20-25, the Cerulean Gym shouldn't be much of a problem.
Pick up the TM from the second room, then follow the hallway to the right. Head south and take the stairs to the basement floor. Fight a few Sailors, then head back to the entrance (and heal up at the Poké Center if necessary). Walk to the left (ignore the first set of stairs), and then south to reach the cafeteria. Check the bottom trash can on the right side to find a Poké Ball, a stronger version of the regular Poké Ball. Head out of the cafeteria, and climb the northwest stairs. Head down (you can take the closest stairs to the outside of the ship for two Trainer battles for extra EXP) and then right, and you'll see the last few rooms of Trainers on the ship, with the Captain's room at the end.

Now that you've battled all the Trainers and picked up all the items, you can head to the Captain's room. <br>
Be careful though, since your rival will be leaving the Captain's room just as you're headed there!
After the battle, he taunts you again and runs off. Now you're free to visit the Captain. When you enter his room, you find him hunched over a trash can - it looks like the Captain got seasick. Not to worry, all it takes is a quick backrub to quell his stomach, and the he rewards you with 01. With this, you'll finally be able to cut down those overgrown trees to reach new areas! Once you've helped the Captain, there's nothing left to do on the ship, so it's time to head back to the city. It's finally time for the next Gym battle! Use your new HM01 to teach a Pokémon how to cut the tree out of the way so you can enter the Gym. The Vermilion Gym focuses on Electrics, so Grounds like Geodude and Sandshrew are your best bet, since they're immune to electrical attacks. If you're after another Ground-type, head east from Vermilion City and wander around in Diglett's Cave - you'll find plenty of Diglett, and even a few Dugtrio. Your Electric- and Grasss are also somewhat immune, but avoid using your Flying- and Waters.

Lt. Surge has set up a trap in his Gym - challengers have to flip two switches hidden randomly in the trash cans to open the doors to the Gym Leader. Once you find the first switch, the second will be right next to it. If you don't flip one right after the other, the trap will reset, and you'll have to hunt them down again.

As you disembark, the ferry glides out of port, so don't miss any items!

He also rewards you with 24, the second-strongest Electric-type attack.
Here Comes the Squirtle Squad!
Speak to the police officer near the Gym. She has just caught a Squirtle that has always been getting into trouble. Having won the Thunder Badge shows her that you're a decent Trainer, so she'll ask take it with you.
