I had the same realization. I thought Carracosta's shell was so unusual that they had to be inspired by something. Malamar's Dark/Psychic typing and hypnotic powers remind me of the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illithid Illithids] or mindflayers from Dungeons & Dragons. They are squid-headed humanoids with often purple-blue skin; they have psionic powers and can control others to do their bidding. Illithids have a history of being adapted for Japanese video games; there is a [http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Mindflayer_(Final_Fantasy) Mindflayer enemy in Final Fantasy as well.] Of course, there's no telling what it's really based on besides just a squid. It'd be cool if we could get a designer interview discussing some of the origins of these designs like was done for some Pokémon in Generation V. Malamar is clearly based on the "Vampire Squid" [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire_squid] due to hynotic lights and its ability to turn itself inside out both key features to Malmar's design.(Malamar turning upside down instead of inside out) Also I want to note that Malamar's collar resembles an "Upturned Collar" similar to an actual vampire. :I'm not really seeing a very strong resemblance to the vampire squid (and that's the translation of its scientific name, not its nickname). Vampire squid are crimson in color; Malamar has no crimson on it at all. Vampire squid have distinctive blue eyes; Malamar's eyes are yellow. Vampire squid have rounded mantles, lack two longer tentacles, their tentacles are connected by membrane that forms a netlike area around the mouth, and they generally really don't look like squid at all (in fact, they're not actually true squid, nor octopi, but the only living member of their own order); Malamar is shaped very much like most true squid species. Also, Malamar turns itself upside-down, not inside-out (although "inside-out" is a misnomer--the vampire squid merely turns its arm cloak over the rest of its body). So I think it's safe to say Malamar is not based on a vampire squid, just (real) squid in general (in fact, I'd agree more with the idea that it could be inspired by Humboldt squid, which are notoriously vicious hunters and could explain the Dark typing). Clearly the MAL in Malamar can more easily be related to such words as Malignant, Maleficent, Malicious. So many words, it seems quite silly to just leave the bulbapedia entry at "a combination of mal and calamari". Pedestrian, no? At the very least specify that "mal" is indeed a prefix followed by something like "from the Latin Malus, meaning bad". I mean do we really need to link what Mal stands for when it can be easily described? Calamari, ok, not everyone may know what that is. This is informed speculation, at best, on my part, but it seems like the translation teams for the games (at least from Japanese into English) work closely with the Japanese team to ensure the international names of the Pokemon stay close to the creators' intentions. The fact that the Japanese, English, French, Spanish, and Italian names all reference the word "Tyrannosaurus" is pretty good evidence to me that that's the primary species Game Freak wanted to reference in Tyrunt's design. I think this should be completely removed. First of all, it adds no useful information to the Pokémon in question. Second of all, "probably" is a weasel word. Either cite a credible source to back it up, or please keep your opinion to yourself. As far as I can tell, the only reason for one to come to "a Mexican dancer" conclusion is that its head is kinda sorta shaped like a sombrero.

I'm not seeing a very physiologically correct analogue to any specific large theropod species, if you want to get that specific (the proportions are all wrong for a juvenile, the toes are splayed too far, the upper jaw has fang-like protrusions while the lower jaw only has two teeth, etc.). This is informed speculation, at best, on my part, but it seems like the translation teams for the games (at least from Japanese into English) work closely with the Japanese team to ensure the international names of the Pokemon stay close to the creators' intentions. The fact that the Japanese, English, French, Spanish, and Italian names all reference the word "Tyrannosaurus" is pretty good evidence to me that that's the primary species Game Freak wanted to reference in Tyrunt's design. Malamar's Dark/Psychic typing and hypnotic powers remind me of the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illithid Illithids] or mindflayers from Dungeons & Dragons. They are squid-headed humanoids with often purple-blue skin; they have psionic powers and can control others to do their bidding. Illithids have a history of being adapted for Japanese video games; there is a [http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Mindflayer_(Final_Fantasy) Mindflayer enemy in Final Fantasy as well.] Of course, there's no telling what it's really based on besides just a squid. Malamar is clearly based on the "Vampire Squid" [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire_squid] due to hynotic lights and its ability to turn itself inside out both key features to Malmar's design.(Malamar turning upside down instead of inside out) Also I want to note that Malamar's collar resembles an "Upturned Collar" similar to an actual vampire. I mean do we really need to link what Mal stands for when it can be easily described? Calamari, ok, not everyone may know what that is.
