Ash's Pignite (Japanese: サトシのチャオブー Satoshi's Chaoboo) is the third Pokémon that Ash caught in the Unova region.

History
With Shamus
Pignite once belonged to a Trainer named Shamus as a Tepig, who abandoned him after he lost to a Deerling in battle. Shamus was disappointed in Tepig and so, Tepig was tied to a post. When Don George tried to untie him, Tepig broke free of his bonds and began searching for his Trainer, but to no avail.

When Ash visited the Accumula Town Pokémon Battle Club in The Battle Club and Tepig's Choice!, Ash mistook Tepig for an Umbreon when watching a security tape of him stealing food from the nearby warehouse. In an attempt to capture the 'Umbreon', Ash then met Tepig for the first time when he was trying to eat some bait. He realized that Tepig was covered in soot and was unable to eat as there was a rope tied around his mouth, making him extremely hungry and very skinny. Initially, Tepig tried to run away, but after being cornered by Ash and having his rope removed and fed, he was carried back to the Battle Club by Ash. Later on, Tepig volunteered to help Ash retrieve his Pikachu from TRT. Later, when Iris wanted to capture Tepig, he refused and decided he wanted to join Ash's team and Ash caught him in a Poké Ball.

With Ash
Tepig fought for Ash during his Striaton Gym battle in Triple Leaders, Team Threats!, against Chili and his Chili. Tepig's attacks didn't do much damage to Pansear, but Pansear managed to hit Tepig with powerful Fire Punch, Flamethrower and Dig attacks. One of Pansear's Dig attacks sent Tepig into the air. Ash then commanded him to dive into the hole that Pansear was in and he managed to bite Pansear's tail. Although Pansear threw Tepig onto the ground, he managed to get up and spin Pansear around, throwing him to the ground. He used Ember successfully and then knocked Pansear out with a powerful Tackle.

Tepig was revealed to be male in Snivy Plays Hard to Catch! when he battled a wild Snivy that would eventually be caught by Ash. Although he managed to use an Ember attack, he was hit by the Snivy's Attract and became infatuated with her, causing him to be recalled.

In A Rival Battle for Club Champ!, he was used to fight against Trip's Tranquill. Like Oshawott before him, he was defeated by two consecutive Aerial Aces due to Tranquill's Super Luck Ability, which increased Tranquill's chance of inflicting critical hits.

In The Battle According to Lenora!, he battled Lenora's Lillipup, which promptly used Roar to force Tepig back into his Poké Ball. After Lenora's Watchog defeated Oshawott, he fought Lillipup again and was defeated. In Rematch at the Nacrene Gym!, he trained alongside Ash at Don George's Battle Club. He ran on a treadmill and dodged black balls that symbolized Shadow Ball attacks. By training, Tepig became faster and stronger, and learned Flame Charge. Later on, he battled against Lenora's Herdier, which soon used Roar to force Tepig back into his Poké Ball again. After Watchog and Oshawott knocked each other out, Tepig battled Herdier again and won because of his faster, stronger attacks and his newly learned Flame Charge move.

He had his third Gym battle against the Bug Gym Leader Burgh in Battling For The Love of Bug-Types! and despite Ash planning to win with a type advantage, Burgh sent out a Dwebble which had its own type advantage. Even though Tepig tried his best, Dwebble's superior speed and powerful Rock moves got the better of Tepig which lead to his eventual defeat.

Tepig was later used in Ash and Trip's Third Battle! to battle Trip's Vanillite. Tepig defended himself from Vanillite's Ice attacks with Flame Charge but could not keep up with some of its faster moves and despite the type advantage, the match ended in a tie.

Tepig was used in Gotta Catch A Roggenrola! to battle Roggenrola after Oshawott was defeated, only to be defeated himself. He later helped Ash rescue all of the Roggenrola from the Team Rocket trio. He later had a rematch with Roggenrola and after a fierce battle, he weakened it enough for Ash to catch it.

In Battle For The Underground!, Tepig was used to propel the train cart Ash and friends were riding on to get away from Team Rocket; along with Roggenrola using Flash Cannon and Iris using Dragon Rage. In the process, his Ember attack became Flamethrower.

In Lost at the Stamp Rally!, Tepig teamed up with Cilan's Pansage when his Trainer Ash and Cilan battled against Subway Bosses Subway Boss and Subway Boss. Battling their Eelektross and Chandelure, Tepig and Pansage battled well but were eventually defeated.

In Evolution by Fire!, while eating with the other Pokémon in the Battle Club, Tepig recognized his previous Trainer, Shamus. Upon seeing him, Tepig happily ran over to Shamus, believing that he would be happy to see him. However, when Shamus threw Tepig at Ash and called him a useless Pokémon, he was very disheartened. Being angered by Shamus's actions, Ash accepted Shamus's challenge of a Double Battle, pitting Tepig against his former Trainer's Emboar and Heatmor the next day. That night Tepig sat alone outside the Battle Club and got very upset while recounting his abandonment. Snivy slapped him with Vine Whip and talked sense into him, as they were preparing for the battle in the morning. Despite Snivy's encouragement, when faced with battling his estranged Trainer, he froze up and was unable to launch any attacks. Though Tepig had thought that abandoning him was a very hard thing for Shamus to do, he was crushed when Shamus revealed he was relieved to get rid of him. However, after watching his friend Snivy take two powerful hits when she was distracted with encouraging him further, Tepig finally hit both of his opponents with a powerful Flame Charge. However, Emboar and Heatmor were able to take the attack and on Shamus's command launched a Flare Blitz/Fire Spin combination move. Making no attempt to dodge, Tepig was pushed out of the way of the attack by his partner Snivy, who took major damage and was knocked out. Tepig became as motivated as his Trainer and Snivy continued to show faith in him, as he evolved into Pignite. With his new power, Pignite used Fire Pledge, impressing both his former and current Trainer and dealing major damage to Emboar and Heatmor. With a final Flame Charge attack, Pignite was able to knock out both of his opponents. After the battle, Shamus talked to Pignite, saying he was impressed with his new power, and asked him to rejoin the team, but Pignite refused, scorching his previous Trainer's face with a Flamethrower and sending him running away in anger.

In Caution: Icy Battle Conditions!, Pignite battled Brycen's Cryogonal. The match started with Pignite's Flame Charge being blocked by Reflect and him being hit by fast Rapid Spin, unable to hit the speedy Cryogonal. After enduring Cryogonal's Frost Breath, Pignite was able to land a direct hit with Fire Pledge, stopping Cryogonal's Rapid Spin and knocking it out. Pignite next went up against Brycen's Beartic where his Flame Charge was stopped by Beartic's Brine. Pignite was soon knocked out after a powerful Icicle Crash and unavoidable Aerial Ace.

In Rocking the Virbank Gym! (Part 2), Ash sent out his Pignite as his fourth Pokémon during his Gym battle with Roxie, facing her Scolipede. Despite her part Bug Pokémon being at a type disadvantage against Fires, Roxie stood calm. Pignite started by trying a Flame Charge, which was blocked by Scolipede's Screech. The Megapede Pokémon next attacked with Sludge Bomb, which was also blocked by Pignite's Flamethrower, causing a big explosion and a cloud of smoke. Using the smoke to his advantage, Ash had Pignite use another Flame Charge, hitting Scolipede and dealing a lot of damage. As Pignite tried to finish the match with another Flamethrower, Scolipede dodged and used Toxic on Pignite, poison him. However, Pignite was able to go on and unleash a Fire Pledge on Scolipede, defeating it. Roxie then gave Pignite a Pecha Berry, curing him of the poison before sending out her strongest Pokémon, Garbodor. The Trash Heap Pokémon was able to use its extendable arms to dodge Pignite's Flame Charge before hitting the Fire Pig Pokémon with DoubleSlap and doing the same again to dodge a Flamethrower. Pignite then used Tackle on Garbodor's arm, causing it to fall over. Pignite was about to use Fire Pledge, but Garbodor extended its arm under his hand, preventing him from using the move, grabbing him, and tossing him to the floor. After getting hit by a few DoubleSlap attacks, Pignite was finally able to unleash his Fire Pledge attack, but Garbodor countered with a Hyper Beam, which went right through Fire Pledge and hit Pignite, knocking him out.

In Ash, Iris and Trip: Then There Were Three!, Pignite battled Trip's Serperior in the Pokémon World Tournament Junior Cup finals. Even though Pignite battled hard; had the type-advantage and managed to dodge many most of his opponent's attacks, Serperior was too fast and dodged every single one of Pignite's attacks, as well as landing a direct hit with SolarBeam. In the end, he became tired and was finished off with a powerful Frenzy Plant.

In BW107, Ash used Pignite in his Higaki Conference battle against Cameron, sending it against his Hydreigon. Pignite started the battle with his new Brick Break attack, which was super effective against the Dragon/Dark Pokémon. Hydreigon counters by attacking with Dragon Pulse, which scores a direct hit. After narrowly dodging Pignite's Flamethrower, the Brutal Pokémon scores a pair of powerful hits with a Tri Attack and a Dragon Rush. Despite of this, Pignite is still able to fight back, and serves his own pair of powerful strikes with Brick Break and Flame Charge, before dodging Hydreigon's Double Hit-counterattack. Next Pignite used Fire Pledge, forcing Hydreigon to take flight in order to avoid it, allowing him to land a direct hit on it with a Flamethrower. Ash then commanded Pignite to serve the finishing blow on his weakened opponent with Brick Break. Although Hydreigon tried to counter with a Double Hit, Pignite easily avoided it and served the super effective strike on the Brutal Pokémon, finishing it off. Cameron's next Pokémon was Ferrothorn. After avoiding Ferrothorn's Metal Claw, Pignite was hit by a Pin Missile. Despite the fact that Pignite was starting to get weak, it was still able to fire a super effective Flamethrower on the Grass/Steel Pokémon. Although Ferrothorn tried to attack back with Mirror Shot, Pignite was easily able to dodge it and strike with Flame Charge, finishing the Thorn Pod Pokémon. Cameron then sent out his third Pokémon, Samurott. Pignite stood no chance against the Formidable Pokémon, which first countered the Fire Pig Pokémon's Flamethrower with a super effective Hydro Cannon, and then knocked him out with an equally powerful Aqua Jet.

Personality and characteristics
Pignite, as a Tepig, has been shown to not take losing very well, often getting sad when he loses, such as in A Rival Battle for Club Champ! where he fought and lost to Trip's Tranquill. This was shown again during Ash's battle against Lenora, the Gym Leader of the Nacrene Gym. He fought against her Lillipup and lost; he got depressed again, and did not even cheer up when Ash told him he did a good job. He also felt upset when he drew to Trip's Vanillite in Ash and Trip's Third Battle!, reacting the same way he does when he loses. However, in some cases, Tepig is happy to lose, but only in unofficial training battles, as seen in A Dragon Master's Path!. Otherwise, Tepig is a rather sweet Pokémon, always looking to please Ash in battle.

Tepig has shown multiple times that he is always trying to please Ash. Lenora confirms this in Rematch at the Nacrene Gym!, where she says that Tepig is trying very hard for Ash. This could be because Tepig's former Trainer abandoned him and out of fear that Ash will do the same, tries his best to prove he is worthy. Even though abandoned by his former Trainer, he was still happy to see him again in Evolution by Fire! and also didn't feel right battling against him. After his evolution, he lost all respect for Shamus as shown when Pignite used Flamethrower on his former Trainer and stayed loyal to Ash.
Trivia
* As a Tepig, his capture was first revealed in a short preview aired after <!--Do not add the dub title here-->DP190, featuring all the Starter Pokémon. However, it was not revealed who would be catching him.
* Pignite is the fourth Fire starter Pokémon to be caught by Ash and the third to have been abandoned by his previous Trainer. The other two are Charmander and Chimchar.
* Like all of Ash's Fire-type Pokémon (minus Quilava), Tepig was caught without battling.
* Pignite is Ash's only Fire-type Pokémon to have his gender confirmed in the original Japanese version.
* Tepig's evolution into Pignite was first revealed in the Japanese ending Seven-colored Arch.
* Pignite is the first Fire-type Ash owned that didn't know Flamethrower when caught.
* Pignite is currently the only Pokémon Ash has caught in Unova that is not known to have been left at Professor Juniper's lab.
* Pignite has battled all the fully evolved Starter Pokémon of the Unova region.
* Pignite didn't learn a Fighting move until 30 episodes after his evolution into a Fighting-type Pokémon.

History
With Paul
Infernape was once a Chimchar owned by Paul. Prior to events of the Diamond and Pearl series, Paul saw Chimchar being chased by a group of Zangoose. The situation looked bad for Chimchar, but in its stress it pulled off an extremely powerful Flame Wheel. This impressed Paul enough to add Chimchar to his regular team. However, this first impression did not match up to Chimchar's normal abilities, resulting in Paul criticizing it for being weak. Traumatized, Chimchar gained a morbid fear of all Zangoose.

Chimchar's first episode was When Pokémon Worlds Collide! where Paul used it to battle Ash's Aipom. It fought well, but lost in the end. Chimchar reappeared in Different Strokes for Different Blokes where it won against Ash's Turtwig and Shapes of Things to Come! where it beat Roark's Onix but lost to Roark's Cranidos.

After losing to Cynthia's Garchomp in Top-Down Training, Paul realized that Chimchar was not fulfilling his expectations. This culminated in the Hearthome City Tag Battle Competition, where he was forced to battle alongside Ash. That night, Ash discovered Paul's training regime, which involved his Pokémon attacking Chimchar in the hopes of recreating the power he had seen before. Ash intervened and took Chimchar to the Pokémon Center where Nurse Joy told Paul it would be unable to battle. Paul ignored this warning.

During the next battle against a Zangoose and a Metagross, Chimchar was too scared to make any attack when caught in Zangoose's claws, and had to be saved by Turtwig, who was seriously injured as a result. Chimchar made up for this by protecting Turtwig from a Fire Blast attack. Furious at Chimchar, Paul refused to give any orders. Consequently, Ash gave Chimchar commands for the remainder of the battle. After the battle, Paul released Chimchar in front of Ash, who then invited it to join him.

With Ash
In the final round of the competition, Paul and Ash selected Paul and Chimchar for their last battle in Smells Like Team Spirit! against Conway's Heracross and Dawn's Buizel. During the battle, Elekid evolved into Electabuzz, and they both combined Thunder and Flamethrower on Buizel and Heracross to knock them out. This victory meant that Ash and Paul won the Hearthome City Tag Battle Tournament.

In Tears For Fears!, Ash and his friends had a picnic party. Chimchar watched the Pokémon having fun and it kept having flashbacks of when it was still in Paul's possession reflecting on how its former Trainer treated it as opposed to how Ash does, after which it cried tears of joy as it was finally treated with patience and kindness by Ash and ashfr, something Paul failed to do as its Trainer. In the same episode, Chimchar overcame its morbid fear of Zangoose stated above.

In A Triple Fighting Chance! Ash used Chimchar in his Gym Battle against the Veilstone City Gym Leader, Maylene. Chimchar battled Meditite, but was recalled after Meditite confused it. It was then sent out against Maylene where it was ultimately defeated, despite a valiant effort.

In Chim - Charred!, Ash and co. came across Paul. Ash and Paul had an enormous argument at which point an enraged Ash challenged Paul to a battle. Chimchar volunteered to go up against Paul and faced Paul's Ursaring. Ursaring and Paul used brutal tactics, and Chimchar was pushed to the point of using Blaze. Chimchar easily defeated Ursaring, but went on an uncontrollable rampage. Ash ran up to Chimchar and grabbed it, begging it to stop. Chimchar continued to struggle, biting Ash at one point. Eventually, it was embraced by Ash and Chimchar calmed down.

Later in Double Team Turnover!, when battling Team Galactic, Chimchar protected Pikachu from a Poison Jab launched by Saturn's Toxicroak. Chimchar was incapacitated for the rest of the fight, and was later thanked by Ash (after receiving medical treatment). Cynthia then comforted Chimchar about its past with Paul.

Ash later used Chimchar to battle against Barry in Barry's Busting Out All Over!. Chimchar easily defeated Barry's Staraptor, using its superior agility. However, despite the type advantage, Chimchar lost to Barry's Roserade.

In Shield with a Twist!, using Ash's counter-shield strategy, Chimchar defeated Fantina's Mismagius and Fantina, earning Ash his Relic.

In Dealing With Defensive Types!, it was used in the battle against Byron's Bastiodon, Bronzor and Steelix. It defeated Bronzor and Steelix, but eventually fell to Bastiodon. This mirrors Staravia's previous participation in the third Gym, with it defeating the Gym Leader's first two Pokémon and losing to their third.

In Sliding Into Seventh!, it was used in the Snowpoint Gym battle. Chimchar battled Candice's Snover and Abomasnow, and despite a harsh battle with Abomasnow, it defeated both of them, earning Ash his Icicle.

In Evolving Strategies!, Chimchar was used in the full battle Ash had against Paul. It defeated Paul's Ursaring, which had previously taken down three of Ash's Pokémon, and evolved soon after into a Monferno, immediately learning Mach Punch. During the following battle against Paul's Electabuzz, it put up a very close fight, but was defeated in a clash of Mach Punch and ThunderPunch, and badly injured, resulting in a loss for Ash.

In Uncrushing Defeat!, Monferno, along with the rest of Ash's Pokémon, was badly injured. It needed a Cheri Berry to help treat it, but the Pokémon Center didn't have one. After Brock got one by Lake Acuity, it became recovered slightly. It eventually attacked TRT in combination with Ash's other Pokémon.

In Bagged Then Tagged!, it was used in a Tag Battle with Dawn against Lyra and Khoury. Monferno used Flamethrower on Dawn's Cyndaquil's Flame Wheel to defeat Lyra's Chikorita, and defeated Khoury's newly evolved Khoury with a Mach Punch.

In Fighting Ire with Fire!, Monferno battled Barry's Empoleon. After being struck by a Hydro Cannon and sent crashing into the forest nearby, Monferno entered once again into an uncontrollable rampage with Blaze, but managed to control it in the last second in order to save Ash's Pikachu, Dawn's Piplup, Paul's Electabuzz and Barry's Empoleon from TRT's falling mecha, evolving into an Infernape in the process.

In Flint Sparks the Fire!, Ash used Infernape in a battle against Flint's Infernape. However, despite its power and speed, it was unable to keep up with Flint's Infernape and was quickly knocked out with a Mach Punch.

In The Eighth Wonder of the Sinnoh World!, Infernape participated in Ash's rematch against Volkner. It defeated Volkner's Jolteon with a Mach Punch. When it battled Volkner's Luxray, it took severe damage, pushing it to activate Blaze. This time, however, Infernape was able to control itself and defeat Luxray with a powerful Flame Wheel, giving Ash the victory and the Beacon.

Before the Lily of the Valley Conference, Ash decided he would need help from his previously caught Pokémon. Due to this, Infernape, along with Ash's Sinnoh party (save for Pikachu) were all sent to Professor Oak's Laboratory. Later during the tournament Ash recalled Infernape to his team and trained against Brock's Sudowoodo to improve Flame Wheel when Infernape suddenly learned Flare Blitz.

Infernape was later used in the full battle against Paul's Aggron, where it managed to burn Aggron with Flare Blitz before finally defeating it with Mach Punch. Ash decided to recall it when Paul sent out his Gastrodon. Later on it was sent out again to battle Paul's Ninjask. Ninjask's Agility was getting the better of it so Ash told it to use Dig then Flare Blitz which heated up the field, causing fire to erupt out of the ground, which made a mist cover the whole field that damaged Ninjask and also canceled Drapion's Toxic Spikes attack. After putting up a good fight, Infernape was able to defeat Ninjask with a powerful Mach Punch, knocking it out in a single hit. Infernape battled Paul's Electivire in a heated battle to in Battling a Thaw in Relations! where it did severe damage to it, but after a long fight, it was caught by Electivire, and took so much damage from the Electivire's Thunder attack that the referee had almost declared it unable to battle, but Blaze was once again activated, giving Infernape the strength to defeat the Thunderbolt Pokémon with a devastating Flare Blitz attack.

Ash left Infernape at Professor Oak's Laboratory when he decided to go to Unova.

Personality and characteristics
Infernape, as a Chimchar, was usually a very sweet and kind Pokémon, until Blaze was activated and it went on a rampage until it could be stopped by Ash. Every time Chimchar saw Paul, it would get really fired up and determined to defeat him in battle. Chimchar never gives up in battle, which is a trait that it carried with it as it evolved into Monferno, and then into Infernape.

Infernape is quite the feisty Pokémon and, in its current stage, is always looking for someone to battle and some new way to boost its skills. Its personality almost completely matches Ash, which is why these two are a perfect match for one another.
* Flamethrower Wheel used in the Tag Battle against Khoury and Lyra, it starts off with Cyndaquil running ahead and using Flame Wheel and while Cyndaquil somersaults into the Flame Wheel, Monferno uses Flamethrower towards Cyndaquil causing more flames to gather and a speed boost towards the target.
* Flamethrower Skating used in Ash's Battle with Candice. It consists of Chimchar using a piece of ice as a skateboard to gain speed and use Flamethrower to avoid being counterattacked by Abomasnow's other attacks.
* Underground Flare Blitz was used in a battle against Paul at the Lily of the Valley Conference in A Real Rival Rouser!. Infernape used Dig, and then while underground used Flare Blitz, causing the entire field to heat up and fire to burst from the ground. This canceled the effects of Drapion's Toxic Spikes and also damaged Ninjask.

* Infernape is the only Pokémon belongs to Ash which previously belongs to a rival.
** Infernape is also the main plot to link both Ash and Paul.
* For Crossing the Battle Line!, Professor Oak's lecture is about Ash's Chimchar.
* Infernape as a Monferno was first revealed in a Japanese movie poster for Arceus and the Jewel of Life and Monferno's evolution into Infernape was revealed in the Japanese opening The Greatest - Everyday!
* When Infernape evolved from a Chimchar to a Monferno, it became the first time Ash had two evolved forms of starter Pokémon from the same region on hand.
* Infernape, as a Monferno, is Ash's third Pokémon to evolve while battling against Paul.
** Paul also witnessed Monferno evolves into Infernape, but not while in battle.
* Infernape is Ash's third starter Pokémon to use its Ability in a Gym battle.
** Out of all the Pokémon on-screen in the anime, Ash's Infernape has activated its Ability the most: a total of five times.
*When a still Chimchar, it was the second Pokémon Ash got from another trainer, after having been mistreated by another trainer in the past.
**In addition, they were both the starter fire-types of their regions.
Synopsis
Ash and Brock, along with May and Max are walking when Ash and Brock spot a familiar figure. The figure turns out to be none other than Misty, their old traveling buddy! The old friends exchange greetings, and Misty proceeds to tell May and Max that she already knows their names. Misty shows off her invitation to a convention for Togepi Trainers and approaches the hotel behind them. Then, two mysterious people dressed in outfits with Togepi markings come up to Misty and take her into the building. Inside, the two people, who are actually TRT, tell MTR to take off. The building then collapses and a blimp starts floating away. Ash and his friends realize that Misty is in trouble and rush toward the rope hanging from the blimp. All of them manage to grab the rope and make their way into it.

The blimp goes through a sandstorm in a desert and reaches its destination, the Mirage Kingdom. Meowth lands the blimp in a landing area, and Jessie and James disguise themselves again. As Misty leaves the blimp, Ash and the others come out, as well as Jessie and James. When asked for their identity, Team Rocket gladly recite their motto. Misty becomes furious at them, thinking that they were trying to steal Pikachu. However, Team Rocket tells them that they were actually after Misty. As the battle commences, a man steps in with his Ninjask and Shedinja.

He demands Togepi, but Misty refuses to hand it over to him. He says that his name is Colonel Hansen. Hansen then orders Shedinja to use SolarBeam to demonstrate its power. Ash and Brock face Hansen with Pikachu and Brock, while Misty, Max, and May run. When Hansen notices that the Togepi is getting away, he commands Shedinja to go after them. Misty, Max, and May keep running until they reach a maze. Shedinja appears, freaking Misty out, but she is determined to protect Togepi. She sends out Misty and orders it to use Spike Cannon. Unfortunately, the attack did not harm the bug Pokémon a bit. Shedinja attacks with another SolarBeam, hitting Misty so hard that she loses Togepi.

A girl in a blue dress discovers Togepi and notices how hurt it is. She informs the caretaker about her find and brings Togepi to a room for treatment. This girl turns out to be Sara, the princess of the Mirage Kingdom. When Sara brings Togepi to her parents, both are thrilled by it. At this point, Misty barges in and sees Togepi. The queen thinks that Misty is trying to steal Togepi, but Sara quickly realizes that Togepi belonged to her. Misty thanks the princess for taking care of Togepi and proceeds to tell them that Hansen tried to steal it from her.

Meanwhile, Hansen states that he has a plan to steal Togepi and tells Team Rocket that they will be rewarded if they help him.

As Misty and company go outside of the temple, Ash and Brock meet up with them. Brock, as usual, goes gaga for the princess and starts flirting with her. Misty, also as usual, pulls him away from her by the ear, but she also throws him back. Max and May are quite shocked by this but they are impressed nevertheless.

The princess explains the importance of Togepi to the kingdom. However, knowing that Hansen is set on trying to take Togepi, she asks Ash and his friends to leave the Mirage Kingdom immediately for their safety. However, as they are about to leave, they notice a temple in the sky. Togepi seems to be reaching for it and then it suddenly floats away. Hansen and Team Rocket appear. Shedinja fires a SolarBeam at them and Pikachu counters it with its Thunderbolt.
* This was the first episode featuring Misty's Advanced Generation outfit.
* This episode aired in the United States exactly one year after its Japanese air date.
* The dub title is based on the Danish fairy tale The Princess and the Pea.
* The Japanese voice artists for Ash's first three female traveling companions are featured in this episode and the next one; Mayumi Iizuka and KAORI voice Misty and May respectively and Megumi Toyoguchi, who voices Princess Sara in this episode, went on to play Dawn during the Diamond & Pearl.
* This episode has the distinction of being one of three featuring the most leads in a single episode. It features May, Max, Misty, Misty, Brock, Jessie, James, MTR, and, of course, Ash and Pikachu.
* During the shot when Shedinja is floating towards Misty, May, and Max, the silver halo over Shedinja's head is missing.
** Close to the end, the same mistake happens again. When Colonel Hansen and TRT attack and Misty refuses to hand Togepi over, Shedinja can be seen without its halo.

Charizard's voice?
I was watching the raw version of the episode, and I noticed that the voice Charizard uses when it is sent out is considerably different from the one used in the English dub in the same shot. As far as I'm aware Charizard's voice has been the same between the two versions throughout the series, with this one shot being the sole exception. Is there any information out there on who substituted Charizard's voice for this one shot, and why that change was made? Matkin22 20:23, 9 September 2010 (UTC)
Counter
The trivia says that counter shouldn't have been able to reflect hyper beam, but this episode was aired before hyper beam was changed to a physical attack, so shouldn't that be a legal mechanic anyways? DimensionBreak Gzig 22:45, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
I don't really think this is an error...
When Pikachu is hit by Kecleon's Lick, he is shown with spiral eyes (which is normally used as an indication that a Pokémon has been knocked out) and yet is still able to battle. To make matters more confusing, when Pikachu is knocked out a couple of minutes later he is shown with the standard spiral eyes.

When Pikachu gets licked, it's still standing up. In this case, it wasn't knocked out; it was actually confused. This isn't really an error, is it? --Emdude 18:44, 5 August 2011 (UTC)
Ash's Pokedex has a normal entry for Blaziken in this episode, but in EP268 (Pop Goes the Sneasel), it had no data. Its been a while since I seen these episodes, so I don't know if he got it updated between these episodes.
