Ash's main goal in life, as described in the first episode, ''[[EP001|Pokémon! I Choose You!]]'', is to be the world's greatest [[Pokémon Master]]. Ash began his journey at the age of 10 as a warm-hearted and well-intentioned but stubborn and unskilled [[Pokémon Trainer]]. He was forced to accept the irreverent {{AP|Pikachu}} from [[Professor Oak]] as his [[starter Pokémon]] because he carelessly broke his alarm clock and woke up late on the day he was set to get his first Pokémon. He was determined to achieve his goal, however, and when he showed his willingness to give up his own safety to keep Pikachu safe, he formed a strong bond of friendship with his Pokémon which would set his course for the future.

However, from that point, Ash still had a lot to learn about becoming a Trainer. He [[captured Pokémon|caught]] his [[Ash's Butterfree|first Pokémon]] by luck, knew nothing about [[Pokémon battle|battling]], and showed a reluctance to admit when he was wrong. Many of his first [[Gym]] [[badge]]s were given to him out of pity or gratitude for his assistance rather than claiming a victory in battle over the [[Gym Leader]]s. Every time he thought he was doing well, he would somehow cross paths with his childhood [[rival]], [[Gary Oak]], who always reminded Ash that he was always a step or seven behind.

Ash's dedication to his goal paid off over time, and after earning his first eight badges, he competed in the [[Indigo League]], and advanced further in the rounds than Gary. After recovering from his defeat, he continued on to improve his skill, take on new challenges, and compete in more [[Pokémon League]] competitions.

Ash has changed a great deal over the course of the series, particularly in regards to his skill at [[Pokémon training]], but his earnestness and determination have remained. Never straying from his goal, he has remained loyal to his friends, his family, and his supporters, but most of all his Pokémon. Ash became a great Trainer by learning to find and use the inner strength of each of his Pokémon by bonding with them and learning where their hidden abilities lie, as well as resorting to unorthodox strategies when fighting particularly challenging opponents. For example, he uses his Pikachu's speed to outmaneuver larger foes and attack, and defeated [[Gary's Blastoise]] with his {{AP|Charizard}} by causing the field to overheat and have Charizard mount a close-range attack while Blastoise was blinded by the steam.

Additionally, during the first season of the series, while Ash originally trained not to further himself but instead to catch more Pokémon than his rival, Gary, he later slowed his pace which allowed him to focus on the individual traits of each Pokémon. At the [[Silver Conference|Johto League Silver Conference]], with great humility and maturity, Ash finally won a battle against his old rival, signifying a great milestone in his history. His maturity has also increased in his dealings with Pokémon, as when [[Ash's Primeape|a Mankey]] stole [[Ash's hat|his hat]] in ''[[EP025|Primeape Goes Bananas!]]'', he screamed and yelled at it, even climbing trees just to get his hat back, but when [[Dawn's Ambipom|an Aipom]] did the same in ''[[AG178|Slaking Kong]]'', he stated merely that he would feel strange without a hat.

In nearly every episode of the anime, Ash befriends someone who will influence him and cause him to strive to become a better Trainer. Although he is not a dependent individual, he is still young and has learned to make his way relying on his {{AP|friends}}, particularly the maternal skills of [[Brock]]. The honor of "best friend" is usually reserved for Pikachu but Ash has come to see his closest human friends in the same light over time; using the term for [[Misty]] in ''[[EP273|Gotta Catch Ya Later]]'' as well as Brock, {{an|May}} and [[Max]] in ''[[AG177|Battling the Enemy Within]]''.

He has traversed much of the [[Pokémon world]] and has thus far participated in four [[Pokémon League#Championship competitions|Pokémon League regional competitions]], but he is still learning new things about Pokémon all the time.

Ash apparently has a close connection with [[Legendary Pokémon]], especially {{p|Ho-Oh}} and {{p|Lugia}}. In the English dub of the [[The Power of One|second movie]], he was revealed to be "The Chosen One" - the one who would bring balance back to the world. Although viewed as a normal human, Ash does have some special abilities as he is said to have the same [[aura]] as [[Sir Aaron]], a legendary hero, and is theoretically able to manipulate it in much the same way. However, he has not received any training in this field, opting to continue his Pokémon journey instead. He has also been likened to an ancient [[aura]] guardian in ''[[DP056|The Keystone Pops!]]'', who also had a partner {{p|Pikachu}}. Later, in [[DP071]] and [[DP072]], Ash uses [[aura]] again to locate a lost Riolu and read Riolu's mind as well. However, these were one time deals, as Riolu had an unnaturally powerful aura.

He has a [[Contest Pass]] for the [[Sinnoh]] region, though he has stated that the contest he got it for was the only one he intends on entering. He also has one for the Hoenn region as it was required to watch one of the contests held there. Ash also carries around a broken [[Poké Ball]], of which the other half belongs to Gary and is a symbol of their ongoing, but now friendly, rivalry, as well as [[Misty's special lure]], which she sent to him as a gift, and also half of a ribbon he received in a contest against May before she left the group to compete in Johto.

Ash lived with his mother, [[Delia Ketchum]], until he left for his Pokémon journey at the age of ten.

His father is never introduced. The anime suggests that his father was once a Pokémon Trainer, but it is unclear whether he is still living. There has been much discussion in the fandom as to the identity of Ash's father, though the writers have chosen to not focus on this aspect of Ash's life. Common characters put forward by fans for the role are [[Giovanni]], [[Professor Oak]] and {{an|Silver}}. In [[Pokémon Live!]], Delia told Ash that Giovanni had once been her boyfriend, and that he was Ash's father. However, this has never been officially acknowledged.

Ash is an only child, breaking from the tradition of several other main characters, with the exception of {{an|Dawn}} and possibly [[Tracey]], whose siblings are often a foil or focal point in their lives.

The manga version of Ash Ketchum is based on the anime version, but there are many differences after both versions took different directions. For example, while anime Ash is indifferent to romance or members of the opposite gender (or same gender, some may argue), manga Ash has a big crush on Gary's sister, [[May Oak]]. He's also prone to quickly falling in love like Brock, but to a much less extreme degree.

*In [[EP009|the ninth episode]] Ash mentioned that he had been a Pokémon trainer for 2 months. This time frame is further reinforced when Ash learns that the Pokémon League will begin in two months when he [[EP065|returns to Pallet Town]] after earning his eighth badge - he arrives at Indigo Stadium [[EP074|nine episodes later]]. If time continued at this rate, he would be at least 20 years old in the latest Japanese episode, something that's implied strongly by {{MTR}} in ''[[DP002|Two Degrees of Separation!]]''. However, given that some episodes take place directly after each other, this time frame is clearly not consistent.
* Ash has been mistaken to be the son of two women from [[Kanto]] and the [[Orange Islands]]. The first time was in ''[[EP027|Hypno's Naptime]]'' where he was mistaken for a boy named Arnold, while the second was in ''[[EP108|Pokémon Double Trouble]]'' when [[Luana]] mistook him for her son [[Travis]].

Ash tries to catch it, but Charmander batted away Ash's [[Poké Ball]]s. Charmander explained to [[Ash's Pikachu|Pikachu]] that it already had a [[Pokémon trainer|trainer]] who it was waiting for. The trio left and went to the local [[Pokémon Center]] after it started to rain.

There, they overheard Damian bragging about how many Pokémon he caught. He then said that he left a Charmander in the forest because it was too weak. Brock yelled at Damian and ordered him to reclaim his Charmander because it might die in the rain. Damian laughed it off and Ash was about to challenge him to a battle when [[Nurse Joy]] prevents a confrontation - saying that using Pokémon to settle arguments is wrong.

Brock and the others recovered Charmander and had it taken care of at the Pokémon Center. After he was feeling better, Charmander left again to wait for Damian.

Team Rocket later tried to steal Pikachu, but Charmander chased them away with a {{m|Flamethrower}} attack. Ash asked Charmander to join them, but Damian showed up, having seen the fight, and said that he had purposely left Charmander alone to toughen it up. Damian was glad he didn't have to go through the trouble of raising Charmander himself. Damian ordered Charmander to return, but Charmander wanted to stay with Ash. Enraged, Damian tried to attack the group with his other Pokémon, but another Flamethrower from Charmander scared Damian away for good.

Damian also makes an appearance in the [[Electric Tale of Pikachu]] manga, but with a much different (read: nicer) personality. His Charmander had been waiting for him for ten days, so {{p|Squirtle}} convinced it and Ash's Pikachu to join him in a trip to the [[Hidden Village]].

There, Charmander was reunited with Damian. Damian had gone shopping when an accident put him in a coma. He thought Charmander would end up at the Hidden Village and came looking for him. The tearful reunion inspired Squirtle to seek out his trainer

Max is somewhat of a know-it-all, relying mostly on book smarts than actual experience. He seems to have come under [[Brock]]'s tutelage for real-world knowledge. Max also took [[Misty]]'s bit for yanking Brock by the ear whenever Brock sees a pretty woman. Max also frequently shows tension between he and his older sister May, such as telling embarrassing stories about her to others or arguing with her about the way she does certain things. For example in the movie [[Jirachi: Wish Maker]] he asks Jirachi to "get rid of the problem", and Jirachi, supposedly reading Max's thoughts, teleported May to the top of the candy mountain upside down.

Max is unique of the main characters in that he actually knew of Ash before he met up with him. Max watched the [[Silver Conference]] live and then continually watched the videos he made of it. When he stopped to find out who was making noise in the gym, he was surprised to see one of the competitors standing in the Gym. However, the two did not get off to a good start as Max continued to put Ash down, assuming that he could have defeated [[Harrison (Johto League)|Harrison]]. After seeing Ash battle Norman, however, Max became impressed with Ash and soon decided to travel with him and May. Max's admiration of Ash has been seen on numerous occasions since then, though he admires his father even more.

Not knowing who it will be leads to some of the conflict and resolution with [[Max (Hoenn)|his doppelganger]] in ''[[AG049|Maxxed Out]]''. At the end of that episode he stated that {{Ho|Max}} is lucky as he already knows who the Pokémon he will start his {{pkmn|training}} with will be. Max finally did meet his future partner in ''[[AG109|Do I Hear a Ralts?]]'' when he befriended a weakened {{p|Ralts}}. Wanting to show his responsibility he took care of it and brought it to a [[Pokémon Center]] with a little help from [[Ash's Glalie|Ash's Snorunt]]. When the two parted ways at the end of the episode, they promised to meet up again when Max was eligible to be a trainer.

However, while Max does not own any Pokémon he has befriended a variety of different species during his travels: {{p|Poochyena}}, {{p|Jirachi}}, {{p|Deoxys}}, a {{p|Shuppet}} in the episode ''[[AG081|Take This House and Shuppet]]''. He simply played with the Shuppet, after fleeing from the team when he became angered with May. Max has also occasionally borrowed [[May's Munchlax]], such as in ''[[AG159|Off the Unbeaten Path!]]'' when he needed a Pokémon to take part in an [[Pokémon Orienteering|Orienteering contest]].

In ''[[AG015|Gonna Rule the School]]'', Max spent a day at [[Roxanne]]'s Trainers School where he battled with a {{p|Poliwag}} against a {{p|Magby}}. He used strategy in increasing Poliwag's defense as much as possible with {{m|Defense Curl}} but this backfired when Magby managed to get enough hits in during this time to knock Poliwag out. In the episode ''[[AG046|Candid Camerupt!]]'', Max borrowed [[Ash's Corphish]] for a battle against [[Winstrate Family|Vivi Winstrate]].

Max is similar to [[Ritchie]] in his lack of popularity in the fandom. This has been stated on many occasions to be due to his lack of Pokémon, giving him little purpose compared to other main characters. However, certain episodes such as ''[[AG109|Do I Hear a Ralts?]]'' and ''[[AG191|Home is Where the Start Is]]'' have redeemed him in some fans' eyes.

At the end of Advanced Generation, May announced that she wished to travel to Johto alone. This initially upset Max but Ash cheered him up with the promise of a battle between the two when Max becomes a trainer. He is currently staying at home in Petalburg City where he is taking lessons from his father and is helping to look after the Gym Pokémon. Max has received just two cameos since his departure, triggered by May's brief return for the [[Wallace Cup]] arc.

Before either of their journeys began, both Gary and Ash found an old [[Poké Ball]] while fishing. The two boys began fighting over who would get to keep the Poké Ball but ended up breaking it in half. Since then, they decided to keep the two separate pieces for themselves. It was revealed in ''[[EP269|The Ties That Bind]]'' that they still carried the pieces with them.

The day he started out on his Pokémon journey, he came off as an arrogant trainer, much like his {{pkmn|game}} counterpart, {{ga|Blue}}. His chosen [[starter Pokémon]] was [[Gary's Blastoise|Squirtle]] which was actually the same Pokémon that Ash originally wanted to start with. He even had a group of [[Gary's cheerleaders|cheerleaders]] who cheered him on in all his battles and would go so far as crying when ever he lost. And he didn't walk on his journeys like most trainers did. Instead he had his own sporty red convertible with his own chauffeur. Gary loved when he got a chance to make fun of Ash by bragging about how far behind Ash was compared to him. He also gave Ash the pet-name of ''Ashy-boy''.

Soon he would eat his words when he would challenge the [[Viridian City]] [[Gym Leader]], [[Giovanni]] to a Pokémon Battle for his final, but not necessary, badge in ''[[EP063|Battle For The Badge]]''. At first he seem to be winning against the Giovanni, knocking out most of his Pokémon. But then Giovanni sent out {{an|Mewtwo}} against the trainer and even let Gary use both his {{TP|Gary|Arcanine}} and {{p|Nidoking}} against it. Mewtwo made quick work of the two Pokémon and Gary experienced his first (known) loss. However this still didn't change his arrogance. It would take a loss at the [[Pokémon League]] in ''[[EP077|The Fourth Round Rumble]]'' during his fourth battle to finally realize that he needed to change himself.

Gary eventually returned in ''[[EP115|A Tents Situation]]''. Much unlike his former self, he congratulated Ash on his victory in the [[Orange Crew|Orange League]]. Soon Ash challenged him to a battle with his {{AP|Pikachu}} as his choice. Gary in turn used his [[Gary's Umbreon|Eevee]]. Gary managed to defeat Ash and then left on his journey through [[Johto]].

In his few appearances during the Johto season, he seemed to have become the complete opposite of who he was. He became polite, intelligent, and respectful to others, including Ash. In ''[[EP270|Can't Beat The Heat!]]'' he battled Ash at the [[Silver Conference]]. Ash ended up winning the battle when his {{AP|Charizard}} defeated Gary's Blastoise.

In ''[[EP273|Gotta Catch Ya Later!]]'' Gary decided that he didn't want to be a Pokémon trainer anymore but instead wanted to be a [[Pokémon researcher]] like his grandfather.

In ''[[H015|Putting the Air Back in Aerodactyl]]'', Gary works on [[Sayda Island]] with {{an|Crystal}}. There, he revived an {{p|Aerodactyl}} from an [[Old Amber]]. At first the Aerodactyl was afraid of him and every other person on the island. But it soon gained his trust after he fed it some fruit that Aerodactyl used to eat.

Eventually, he moves to the [[Sinnoh]] region where he is currently conducting his research.

Ash's main goal in life, as described in the first episode, ''[[EP001|Pokémon! I Choose You!]]'', is to be the world's greatest [[Pokémon Master]]. Ash began his journey at the age of 10 as a warm-hearted and well-intentioned but stubborn and unskilled [[Pokémon Trainer]]. He was forced to accept the irreverent {{AP|Pikachu}} from [[Professor Oak]] as his [[starter Pokémon]] because he carelessly broke his alarm clock and woke up late on the day he was set to get his first Pokémon. He was determined to achieve his goal, however, and when he showed his willingness to give up his own safety to keep Pikachu safe, he formed a strong bond of friendship with his Pokémon which would set his course for the future.

However, from that point, Ash still had a lot to learn about becoming a Trainer. He [[captured Pokémon|caught]] his [[Ash's Butterfree|first Pokémon]] by luck, knew nothing about [[Pokémon battle|battling]], and showed a reluctance to admit when he was wrong. Many of his first [[Gym]] [[badge]]s were given to him out of pity or gratitude for his assistance rather than claiming a victory in battle over the [[Gym Leader]]s. Ash became a great Trainer by learning to find and use the inner strength of each of his Pokémon by bonding with them and learning where their hidden abilities lie, as well as resorting to unorthodox strategies when fighting particularly challenging opponents. Additionally, during the first season of the series, while Ash originally trained not to further himself but instead to catch more Pokémon than his rival, Gary, he later slowed his pace which allowed him to focus on the individual traits of each Pokémon. At the [[Silver Conference|Johto League Silver Conference]], with great humility and maturity, Ash finally won a battle against his old rival, signifying a great milestone in his history. His maturity has also increased in his dealings with Pokémon, as when [[Ash's Primeape|a Mankey]] stole [[Ash's hat|his hat]] in ''[[EP025|Primeape Goes Bananas!]]'', he screamed and yelled at it, even climbing trees just to get his hat back, but when [[Dawn's Ambipom|an Aipom]] did the same in ''[[AG178|Slaking Kong]]'', he stated merely that he would feel strange without a hat.

In nearly every episode of the anime, Ash befriends someone who will influence him and cause him to strive to become a better Trainer. Although he is not a dependent individual, he is still young and has learned to make his way relying on his {{AP|friends}}, particularly the maternal skills of [[Brock]]. The honor of "best friend" is usually reserved for Pikachu but Ash has come to see his closest human friends in the same light over time; using the term for [[Misty]] in ''[[EP273|Gotta Catch Ya Later]]'' as well as Brock, {{an|May}} and [[Max]] in ''[[AG177|Battling the Enemy Within]]''.

Ash apparently has a close connection with [[Legendary Pokémon]], especially {{p|Ho-Oh}} and {{p|Lugia}}. In the English dub of the [[The Power of One|second movie]], he was revealed to be "The Chosen One" - the one who would bring balance back to the world. Although viewed as a normal human, Ash does have some special abilities as he is said to have the same [[aura]] as [[Sir Aaron]], a legendary hero, and is theoretically able to manipulate it in much the same way. However, he has not received any training in this field, opting to continue his Pokémon journey instead. He has also been likened to an ancient [[aura]] guardian in ''[[DP056|The Keystone Pops!]]'', who also had a partner {{p|Pikachu}}. Later, in [[DP071]] and [[DP072]], Ash uses [[aura]] again to locate a lost Riolu and read Riolu's mind as well. However, these were one time deals, as Riolu had an unnaturally powerful aura.

He also has one for the Hoenn region as it was required to watch one of the contests held there. Ash lived with his mother, [[Delia Ketchum]], until he left for his Pokémon journey at the age of ten.

His father is never introduced. The anime suggests that his father was once a Pokémon Trainer, but it is unclear whether he is still living. There has been much discussion in the fandom as to the identity of Ash's father, though the writers have chosen to not focus on this aspect of Ash's life. Common characters put forward by fans for the role are [[Giovanni]], [[Professor Oak]] and {{an|Silver}}. In [[Pokémon Live!]], Delia told Ash that Giovanni had once been her boyfriend, and that he was Ash's father. However, this has never been officially acknowledged.

Ash is an only child, breaking from the tradition of several other main characters, with the exception of {{an|Dawn}} and possibly [[Tracey]], whose siblings are often a foil or focal point in their lives.

Dawn is notable for her confidence, since she is always looking towards the future rather than dwelling on her mistakes. In the Japanese version, she often says, "{{tt|Daijōbu!|'It's fine!' or 'It'll be alright!'}}" Although not consistently translated in the English dub at first, she began to regularly use "No need to worry!".

Like Ash, she is lucky enough to have seen a [[legendary Pokémon]], the projected soul of {{p|Mesprit}} in ''[[DP001|Following a Maiden's Voyage!]]''.

She had a [[bicycle]], but like [[Misty]]'s and {{an|May}}'s bikes, Ash's {{AP|Pikachu}} destroyed it with its {{m|Thunderbolt}}. However, she did not mention this to Ash until over 30 episodes after it happened. Johanna gave Dawn one of her old [[ribbon]]s from her days as a coordinator as a gift for luck. She also had a large suitcase full of dresses, but her mother made her leave it at home due to its impracticality.

Out of all of Ash's friends, Dawn is the only one so far to have her debut episode dedicated completely to herself. Unlike other debut episodes, Ash didn't even appear until the last 30 seconds. Additionally, she is the one of Ash's friends to get the most development.

In ''[[DP061|Team Shocker!]]'', she lost the Appeal Round for second time in a row.

She has two childhood friends that appeared in the anime, [[Kenny (Sinnoh)|Kenny]] and [[Yumomi]], both of which call her sometimes '''Dee Dee''' (Japanese: '''ピカリ''' ''Pikari''). Dawn has prevented them from telling Ash and Brock about the reason why she has this nickname. She seems to be closer to Yumomi than to Kenny.
