In ancient times, Necrozma's light shone through the Ultra Wormholes connecting to various worlds such as the Ultra Beasts' homeworlds, [[Ultra Megalopolis]] and the [[Pokémon world]], primarily over the [[Alola]] [[region]]. However, following an incident with the residents of Ultra Megalopolis in ancient years, Necrozma's body was damaged and it lost the ability to produce light, the agony caused by its injuries sending it into a berserk state where it constantly hungered for light. As a result, it was imprisoned in [[Megalo Tower]]. [[Professor Kukui]] theorizes that the [[Sparkling Stone]]s found across Alola and fashioned into [[Z-Ring]]s and [[Z-Power Ring]]s are the lost pieces of Necrozma's body.

At one point in the past, a Solgaleo{{sup/7|SUS}}/Lunala{{sup/7|MUM}} arrived in Alola from Ultra Space and won a fight against the [[guardian deities]]. Solgaleo/Lunala bestowed the [[Tapunium Z]] to the guardian deities, and in conjunction with a Lunala{{sup/7|S}}{{sup/7|US}}/Solgaleo{{sup/7|M}}{{sup/7|UM}} produced several {{p|Cosmog}} that were revered by the region's monarchies and protected by the four tapu, before the [[Legendary Pokémon]] departed back to Ultra Space.

At another point in the past, Necrozma appeared in Alola and stole its light, covering the region in darkness. Necrozma clashed against the [[guardian deities]], who fought to defend Alola. During that time, Necrozma also absorbed Solgaleo{{sup/7|US}}/Lunala{{sup/7|UM}} to become its Dusk Mane{{sup/7|US}}/Dawn Wings{{sup/7|UM}} form. With the assistance of a youth, [[Z-Crystal]]s and [[Sparkling Stone]]s, the deities banished Necrozma, freed Solgaleo{{sup/7|US}}/Lunala{{sup/7|UM}} and reclaimed Alola's light.

Prior to the events of {{pkmn|Sun and Moon|Sun, Moon,}} {{pkmn|Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon|Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon}}, Professor Mohn and the Aether Foundation had done research on Ultra Space, giving the location its name, and discovering what lies beyond Ultra Wormholes. He had discovered that Cosmog may be an Ultra Beast, due to its origins of Ultra Space.

As [[Hau]] and the {{player}} visited [[Aether Paradise]], an Ultra Wormhole opens in the facility and releases a Nihilego, that after its defeat, returns to Ultra Space. After the player reaches [[Lusamine]] in Aether Paradise with Hau, [[Lillie]], [[Gladion]], and [[Guzma]], she uses [[Nebby]]'s power to open countless Ultra Wormholes all over [[Alola]] to spread [[Ultra Beast]]s around the region. After she's defeated, she retreats into another Ultra Wormhole alongside Guzma as the wormholes started closing again. The player and Lillie, in order to save Guzma and Lusamine, formed another Ultra Wormhole with Nebby's help at the [[Altar of the Sunne]]{{sup/7|S}}/[[Altar of the Moone]]{{sup/7|M}} after it evolved into a {{p|Solgaleo}}{{sup/7|S}}/{{p|Lunala}}{{sup/7|M}}. They found themselves in the Nihilego's homeworld, [[Ultra Deep Sea]] (referred to as Ultra Space) and after defeating Lusamine, who had [[Pokémon fusion|fused]] with a Nihilego, they all returned to Alola.

In the post-game, an Ultra Wormhole can still be found at the Altar of the Sunne{{sup/7|S}}/Altar of the Moone{{sup/7|M}} and can be passed through to enter an alternate version of the [[Pokémon world]], specifically Alola, where it'll be nighttime{{sup/7|S}}/daytime{{sup/7|M}} instead, there the player can travel to the [[Lake of the Moone]]{{sup/7|S}}/[[Lake of the Sunne]]{{sup/7|M}} to obtain a {{p|Cosmog}} through Nebby and a {{p|Lunala}}{{sup/7|S}}/{{p|Solgaleo}}{{sup/7|M}} from there. This world is known as the reverse world.

Similarly to the previous games, [[Lusamine]] used [[Nebby]] to open an [[Ultra Wormhole]], but only one so she could reach Ultra Space and defeat {{ga|Necrozma}} alongside [[Guzma]] to protect their world. The {{player}} and [[Lillie]] also evolved Nebby into {{p|Solgaleo}}{{sup/7|US}}/{{p|Lunala}}{{sup/7|UM}} so they could rescue Lusamine and Guzma, however, before it could create an Ultra Wormhole, a new one appeared at the altar created by Necrozma, that threw Lusamine and Guzma out of it. After battling Nebby, Necrozma [[Pokémon fusion|absorbed]] Nebby and became Dusk Mane{{sup/7|US}}/Dawn Wings{{sup/7|UM}} Necrozma, creating countless Ultra Wormholes all over Alola, before being defeated and retreating to Ultra Space. The {{player}} uses the [[Ultra Recon Squad]]'s {{p|Lunala}}{{sup/7|US}}/{{p|Solgaleo}}{{sup/7|UM}} to go after Necrozma in the squad's homeworld, [[Ultra Megalopolis]], where the player defeats it, freeing Nebby and forcing it to retreat back to Alola.

Sometime after the main game, [[Team Rainbow Rocket]] uses the [[Ultra Wormhole]] technology to travel to [[Alola]] from Ultra Space, this team is formed by previous [[villainous team]] leaders from worlds where they were victorious in their plans. They built their [[Team Rocket's Castle]] in [[Aether Paradise]]. After each of them were defeated, [[Colress]] uses the same technology to send them back to their worlds, excluding [[Giovanni]], who leaves for another world on his own later.

An animated series-exclusive world in Ultra Space known only as [[Poipole's world]] debuted in a dream ''[[SM084|The Shape of Love to Come!]]''. It is the home world of [[Ash's Poipole]]. In ''[[SM089|The Prism Between Light and Darkness!]]'', the [[Ultra Guardians]] arrived in this world with {{an|Lunala}} in pursuit of {{an|Necrozma}}, where it was revealed that Necrozma used to grant light to this alternate world before it lost its power protecting its residents. With the combined Ultra Aura of the people and Pokémon of Alola, Necrozma was able to return to its {{DL|List of Pokémon with form differences|Necrozma|Ultra form}}, bringing life back to the world. Its mission complete, Poipole decided to stay with its kind, bidding Ash and {{AP|Pikachu}} farewell.

In ''[[SM100|Battling the Beast Within!]]'', Ash and Pikachu were transported through a [[dimension]]al rift to the [[Ultra Ruin]], an alternate version of [[Alola]] that was devastated by the arrival of a {{DL|Ultra Beasts (anime)|Guzzlord}}. The pair came face to face with Guzzlord, but were rescued by {{al|Dia}} and his friend {{p|Zeraora}}. Ash and Pikachu later assisted Dia and Zeraora in pushing Guzzlord into an Ultra Wormhole before returning to their own world in ''[[SM101|Parallel Friendships!]]''.

In the [[SM146|final episode]] of {{aniseries|SM}}, Ash recounted a story of an off-screen adventure he had with Solgaleo in an unnamed Ultra Space world, where he helped an Ultra Beast he had "never seen before", despite all known Ultra Beasts having debuted in the series by this point. It was later shown in a flashback in footage recorded by {{Rotom}}, who showed it to the Aether Foundation. Lusamine was so impressed by Rotom's findings that she offered Rotom a position helping the Foundation, which Rotom accepted with Ash's blessing.

After being found by the [[Ultra Recon Squad]], they traveled to Ultra Megalopolis, with [[Lusamine]] also arriving there soon after to catch Necrozma. Eventually, Sun, Moon, and Lusamine were sent back to Alola through an [[Ultra Wormhole]].
