Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver
Pokémon HeartGold Version (Japanese: ポケットモンスター ハートゴールド Pocket Monsters HeartGold) and Pokémon SoulSilver Version (Japanese: ポケットモンスター ソウルシルバー Pocket Monsters SoulSilver) are paired Generation IV video game remakes of the Generation II games Gold and Silver.

Much like FireRed and LeafGreen revisited the Generation I story of Kanto, HeartGold and SoulSilver retell the story of Johto, with the player's starting area being New Bark Town. While the games feature several expansions in key areas, the overall plot follows the same direction as the original . Some aspects exclusive to Crystal are also included. Like FireRed and LeafGreen could link up with to complete the Pokédex by trading regionally exclusive Pokémon, HeartGold and SoulSilver can link up with to obtain Pokémon unavailable in Johto and Kanto, such as the Sinnoh starters.

Kris, despite being the female counterpart of Ethan, is not included as the female player character, with a Lyra instead taking her place. Whether she is chosen to be the player character or not, this new character will still appear in the game. The unselected protagonist will take a pseudo-rival role similar to the unselected characters of Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, .

The games were released on September 12, 2009 in Japan, February 4, 2010 in Korea, March 14, 2010 in North America, March 25, 2010 in Australia and March 26, 2010 in Europe (this excludes the Netherlands, Luxembourg and parts of Belgium due to an in-game save error, with the patched copies later released on April 2, 2010).

Changes from Pokémon Gold and Silver
Aesthetic changes
* The male player character receives a redesign and is now called Ethan, while Kris is replaced by a new female player character called Lyra.
* All the game's music is rearranged to better utilize the DS's sound capabilities. A key item allows the player to switch back and forth freely between the arranged soundtrack and original chiptune soundtrack.
* Ambient sound effects are used with greater frequency than in previous games; for example, running water, blowing wind and the player walking through grass will produce audible noises.
* The Pokégear has been redesigned. There are a range of skins that can be used and changed at the player's will.
* Much like Kanto's was for its remakes, Johto's Pokédex has been redesigned. Unlike Kanto's remakes, which contained the same regional Pokédex as the originals, the original regional Pokédex for Johto has been slightly altered, including several Generation IV evolutions for Pokémon found in Johto.
* An image of certain locations, like in FireRed and LeafGreen, appears when entering the location. Some of these images change depending on the time of day while others change the image of the Pokémon obtainable at the location on the image at random.
* Team Rocket grunts are redesigned once again. Team Rocket's Executives are also redesigned from Generation II, with four new ones appearing: Archer, Arianna, Petrel, and Proton. Like Team Galactic's Commanders followed a planetary naming scheme, the Executives are all named for various real-world rockets.
* Lugia and Ho-Oh each have their own unique battle music, while the legendary beasts each use differently remixed versions of their battle theme from Crystal.
* All former Berries (Generation II) trees have become Apricorn trees.
* Gym Leaders, Elite Four members, Silver, and Red have animated battle sprites and battle intros, as in Platinum. Many Gyms have been redesigned as well, some with new puzzles.
* Rock Smash, previously a TM usable on the field in the originals, is now a full-fledged HM as it has been since Generation III. Defog loses its HM status to the returning Whirlpool.
* Rock Climb, despite it not being available prior to Generation IV, continues to be 08 and requires the Viridian Gym badge. As a result, several caves and cliffs have markings which allow them to be scaled like in .
* The Magnet Train's tracks can be seen overhead on 32, as well as in Goldenrod City where the tracks were previously on street-level.
* Pal Park is located where the closed Kanto Safari Zone once stood in Fuchsia City.
* The player can now see how many Kanto badges they have. In the original games, the player could only see how many Johto badges they had.
* Ecruteak City and Cianwood City, while sharing a theme in Generation II, now feature separate remixed variations of the same theme.
* Some music in Kanto is changed, with Mt. Moon and the Seafoam Islands changing their music to that which is used by of Johto's Union Cave and Ice Path, respectively. Music in Cerulean City and Fuchsia City, as well as on Routes 24 and 25, rather than taking the theme used in Pewter City, Celadon City, and on 3 as they did in the original Generation II games, keep the theme used in Generation I and Generation III. The music used on 2, however, is different from any previous generation; the Generation II theme, a remix of the Viridian Forest theme in Generation I, is used solely in Viridian Forest, while the theme used in Generation I and Generation III is, like in Generation II, only used on 1. Route 2 instead uses the theme that first appears on 3. Cinnabar Island also gets its own music, a remix of its original theme, instead of using the Saffron City theme.
* The Goldenrod City Radio Tower has an observation deck accessible via elevator. This replaces the second recording room.
* There are wind turbines standing in New Bark Town and on Route 14.
* When viewing the stats of a Pokémon outside of battle, one of the stat names will be light blue, indicating which stat is decreased by the Pokémon's nature, and one will be red, indicating which stat is increased. If the Pokémon has a neutral nature, none of the stats will be colored.

Location changes
* Elm's Lab has an upstairs level, where the professor and his family live, his old house being occupied by Lyra/Ethan and her/his family.
* The Battle Tower west of Olivine City, introduced in Crystal, returns, bringing with it the exact same Battle Frontier seen in Platinum.
* Two new routes, 47 and 48, are introduced near Cianwood City. They lead to a new Safari Zone, as well as the Embedded Tower and the Cliff Cave.
* Mt. Silver is much bigger and Viridian Forest is not cut down.
* Cerulean Cave and the Seafoam Islands remain as they were in Generation III (though Blaine still takes part of the Seafoam Islands), allowing the legendary Pokémon that live inside them to be battled. Moltres, formerly found in Victory Road and Mt. Ember, can be found in Mt. Silver.
* The Fighting Dojo in Saffron City takes a role similar to Sinnoh's Battleground, where the rematches between the player and Gym Leaders take place.

Gameplay changes
* All 493 Pokémon are capable of following players similar to Pikachu in Yellow. Shininess is also retained. The player can interact with their Pokémon by pressing 'A', and can see how their Pokémon is feeling at the moment. In battle, like Yellow's Pikachu, they are sent out from the side of the screen, rather than from a Poké Ball, unless in certain situations, such as while riding the bicycle, surfing, or going indoors with a large Pokémon.
* A new series of events precede encountering the version mascots in both versions, and thus it is mandatory for the player to engage in battle with the version mascot in order to continue with the game and proceed to the Pokémon League, similar to the plots of Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, . In the originals, it was completely optional to encounter Ho-Oh and Lugia.
* The five Kimono Girls from the dance theatre in Ecruteak City now have a significant role in the game. During the player's adventure, he/she can meet each Kimono Girl at different points of the game where they will ask the player to do them a small favor. After receiving the Master Ball from Professor Elm and before meeting the version mascot, each Kimono Girl tests the player with a battle. Once all five are defeated, they proceed to the Bell Tower (in HeartGold) and Whirl Islands (in SoulSilver) where they will perform a dance to summon Ho-Oh and Lugia, respectively.
** As these events were not part of the plot of the originals, the Kimono Girls were to be battled earlier on in the game at the Ecruteak Dance Theatre in order to earn 03 from a man once all five were defeated. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, a mischievous Team Rocket grunt inside the theatre needs to be battled instead.
* Kurt and Apricorns make a return to the series along with their respective Poké Balls. Apricorns can now be carried by the player in their own bag with a new item, the Apricorn Case. The possibility of requesting Kurt for creating multiple Balls simultaneously like in Crystal was not carried over to the remakes.
* While the List of key items in Generation IV and List of key items in Generation IV only allow permission to climb the Bell Tower and enter Lugia's cave in the Whirl Islands, respectively, the player cannot encounter their version's respective mascot until they obtain the List of key items in Generation IV in HeartGold and the List of key items in Generation IV in SoulSilver. Since the Tidal Bell cannot be obtained in HeartGold and the Clear Bell cannot be obtained in SoulSilver, those items are not required in those versions to encounter the opposite mascot.
* Unlike Generation II, new tasks are put in to complete that are now required to progress the story forward, such as obtaining the Radio Card for the Pokégear to be able to challenge Whitney, and the Kimono Girls and version mascot event must be completed to challenge the Elite Four.
* The RageCandyBar is now a key item. This is likely to prevent the player from trading it to Diamond, which does not have any item data for it.
* Similarly to the event Shaymin and Regigigas's effect on Platinum, the Pikachu-colored Pichu unlocks an event near the Ilex Forest Shrine, where the Spiky-eared Pichu can be obtained.
* The Pokémon storage system, bag, party interface, and the screen that pops up when pressing the Start or X buttons in the previous games all use the Nintendo DS's touch screen.
* Legendary Pokémon from other regions can be caught in the games. Hoenn's legendaries, Kyogre and Groudon, return in HeartGold and SoulSilver, respectively, after Red has been defeated, and Rayquaza can be caught in both games if a Groudon from SoulSilver and a Kyogre from HeartGold are shown to Professor Oak. Latias (in HeartGold) or Latios (in SoulSilver) can be found roaming in Kanto later in the game after speaking to Steven Stone. The legendary birds can also be found in certain locations in Kanto while Mewtwo can be found at Cerulean Cave.
* Cynthia makes an appearance in an event involving Arceus. This takes place in an area accessed from the Ruins of Alph that is far to the north, named the Sinjoh Ruins. This event allows players to obtain either Dialga, Palkia, or Giratina at level 1. The only way to obtain the Griseous Orb and Origin Forme Giratina in this game is to choose Giratina during this event.
* The Enigma Stone is an event key item that features a use similar to that of the Eon Ticket. It can allow other Eon Pokémon to be encountered (i.e. Latios in HeartGold and Latias in SoulSilver, respectively).
* Headbutting trees to locate certain Pokémon makes its return. However, this time it can also be used to collect Pokémon from Hoenn and Sinnoh after the National Pokédex is acquired.
* The Gracidea can be obtained in the flower shop in Goldenrod City by bringing any fateful encounter Shaymin to show them.
* Eusine, a major character from Crystal who was not in the original Gold and Silver, appears, as do other aspects originally featured in Crystal.
* A new sidequest, the Pokéathlon, features ten mini-games that pit Pokémon in athletic competitions. Its system appears to be analogous to that of Contests from previous games.
* Like the GBA Wireless Adapter that came with FireRed and LeafGreen, a bonus is included with the purchase of HeartGold and SoulSilver: a Poké Ball-shaped pedometer called the Pokéwalker that has the capacity to link to the two games and hold a Pokémon. Storing a Pokémon in this manner increases its experience and happiness as the wearer walks. Other Pokémon can be captured in exclusive Pokéwalker-only areas and then transferred to the main game.
* Apricorns are now the only items collected from plants on the field. Berries are instead collected from Jugglers in Violet City and Fuchsia City in exchange for shards, through the Pokéwalker's Dowsing function, hidden on the ground, or from the deliveryman in Poké Marts sent by the player's mom (if the player allows their mom to save money). Because only a few berries cannot be collected in these games, they must by traded over from other versions, similar to that of FireRed and LeafGreen. Though they cannot be grown on the ground like in Hoenn or Sinnoh, they can be grown portably using the Berry Pots, where the Squirtbottle is controlled via the touch screen to water four berries at a time.
* Using the Apriblender, Apricorns can now also be mixed into drinks that increase Pokémon's Pokéathlon stats.
* The Running Shoes are obtained in Cherrygrove City and can be permanently selected using the touchscreen menu. The selected item (from pressing Y or SELECT in previous games) is also on the touchscreen. Two items can be selected as opposed to just one.
* Due to the absence of the Vs. Seeker, the Pokégear reintroduces an improved cell phone feature with a limitless call list. However, re-battling Trainers is now dependent on the day and time.
* Starter Pokémon from Kanto and Hoenn can be collected from Professor Oak and Steven Stone, respectively, as appreciation for defeating Red.
* Commemorative photos can now be taken around Johto and Kanto with the player's partner Pokémon, team, Gym Leaders, and certain notable citizens.
* An event-exclusive Celebi unlocks an encounter with former Team Rocket boss and Viridian Gym Leader Giovanni. Giovanni was mentioned repeatedly in the original Gold and Silver, but did not appear.
* Many Pokémon have acquired the ability to learn new moves and expand and improve their movesets; for example, Togepi can now learn Extrasensory through breeding.
* The GB Sounds, a key item obtained after all 16 badges have been obtained, allows players to swap the background music for the soundtrack from the original Gold and Silver, redone. New music tracks, such as the music that plays on Routes 47 and 48, also receive an 8-bit remix. However, not every track got an 8-bit remix and some can only be listened through the Pokémon Past Archive radio station in the Pokégear.
* When using the move Whirlpool outside of battle, instead of the whirlpool disappearing like in Generation II, the player will simply surf over the whirlpools.
* Specific individual values may be passed down through breeding depending on the EV-enhancing item that is held.
* The Trainers that appear in Viridian City's Trainer House are now influenced by communication through two Pokéwalkers as opposed to the previous method of Mystery Gifting with the Game Boy Color's infrared port due to it being available from the start.
* During the player's initial battle with the rival, he is known as Passerby Boy, unlike in Gold and Silver, where he was identified as ???. Players are still required to name him later.
* The man in Ilex Forest, who previously gave out the TM for Headbutt in Generation II has become a move tutor for that move. This is due to the fact that Headbutt is no longer a TM. Unlike other move tutors, he does not require anything from the player to tutor the move, and will do it as many times as the player would like.
* Similar to Pokémon Crystal, the legendary beasts can be caught from the moment the player sees them fleeing in the Burned Tower, with the exception of Suicune who can only be encountered in battle at 25, instead of at the Bell Tower. Suicune can be seen running around in certain locations across Johto, as well as and Kanto.
*The map in the Pokégear has the same function as the Pokétch for the Pokétch in to track roaming Pokémon. Additionally the player does not need to face Raikou or Entei (as well as Latios and Latias) in battle first to be able to track them.
*Trainers in Kanto will now give out their Pokégear numbers, whereas only Trainers on Routes 26 and 27 would do so in the original games.
*In the original Gold and Silver, the real Janine was in the lower left corner of the Gym, while one of her Gym trainers was in the middle, where the Leader should be. This isn't the case in HeartGold and SoulSilver, where Janine was moved to the middle.
* It is now possible to Fly to the Pokémon League Reception Gate. It is also now possible to Fly between Indigo Plateau or the Reception Gate and any location in either Kanto or Johto. Curiously, however, it's not possible to Fly to the Pokémon Centers in Routes 4 and 10, whereas it was possible in FireRed and LeafGreen, but not in the original Gold and Silver.

Pokémon
As in Gold and Silver, the primary Pokémon of the remakes are native to the Johto and Kanto regions. Due to advances in gameplay since the second generation, the regional Pokédex used in Gold and Silver (the New Pokédex) has been updated to include those Pokémon which evolve upon learning a new move. Rather than simply excluding these evolutions (as FireRed and LeafGreen did with happiness-based evolutions), an improved Johto Pokédex was established with 256 Pokémon: five more than the New Pokédex.

Similarly to other recently released Pokémon games, Pokémon from outside the regional Pokédex can be captured after defeating the Elite Four and earning the National Pokédex. Pokémon native to Sinnoh and Hoenn can be found in various methods. Swarms of Pokémon sometimes break out across the Johto and Kanto regions; oftentimes these are not native to either of the regions. Pokémon from other regions can be located by playing one of two special stations on the Pokégear's radio function. There is a channel for Sinnoh Pokémon which plays only on Thursdays; the Hoenn channel only plays on Wednesdays. By having either of these programs turned on when in tall grass the chance of finding a foreign Pokémon increases. The Bug Catching Contest also hosts, from time to time, Hoenn and Sinnoh Pokémon. They will only appear on Thursdays and Saturdays. The Johto Safari Zone's customization option also allows for the finding of Pokémon from other regions.

In an apparent attempt to remove reliance on Generation III cartridges, starter Pokémon of Kanto and Hoenn can be obtained late in the game from Professor Oak and Steven Stone respectively. Some legendary Pokémon which were not included in the Generation II games, such as Kanto's legendary birds and Mewtwo, are also available.

Despite being remakes of Pokémon Gold and Silver, most of the wild Pokémon encounter data is identical to Pokémon Crystal, with the exception of version-exclusive Pokémon and a select few routes.

As in all main series Pokémon games, there are a number of Pokémon which can be found in one of the paired games, but not the other. A list of these Pokémon follows below.

Trivia
* Several figures were given away with pre-orders. People could receive a Ho-Oh figure by pre-ordering HeartGold, a Lugia figure by pre-ordering SoulSilver, and an Arceus figure by pre-ordering the Japanese versions of both HeartGold and SoulSilver.
* These games mark the tenth anniversary since the release of the original .
** The games were also released in Japan almost exactly one year after the Japanese release of Platinum, and exactly eleven years after Yellow, the first game to feature walking Pokémon.
* Unlike how FireRed and LeafGreen used completely different Trainer sprites from Ruby and Sapphire, many Trainer classes shared between regions, like Hikers and Psychics, keep their sprites in battle.
* The font used for the English titles of these games are different than the font that has been used since Ruby and Sapphire, while the Japanese logos are still in the same style used since those games. FireRed and LeafGreen also used a different font than the Hoenn games, however, it was still the same color.
** Additionally, the Ho-Oh crest shaped like a heart and Lugia soul are used in the English logos, while the fire and leaf that appear on FireRed and LeafGreen's Japanese logos were not used in the English release.
* These games mark the first time that the English versions were announced before the games themselves came out in Japan.
* Because of HM05's conversion from Defog to Whirlpool, these games are the only games in which all available HMs teach damaging moves (both Defog and Flash, contained in HM05, prevented this in previous games).
* These are the first games in which major characters offer their Pokémon for a trade with the player, with Gym Leaders Brock, Lt. Surge, Jasmine, and Hoenn's former champion Steven Stone offering Pokémon of their specialty type in exchange for another.
** These are the first games in which an in-game trade accepts any Pokémon of any gender, with Jasmine accepting such in exchange for her Steelix.
* Unlike how 's intro was an updated version of the opening from , HeartGold and SoulSilver have an entirely new intro, using none of the footage from the intro of . The intro however, uses some music that was in the original and the title screen displays 3D renders of Ho-Oh and Lugia in movement similar to the original title screens.
* HeartGold and SoulSilver include the champions from each of the paired versions: Blue from , Lance from , Steven Stone from , and Cynthia from .
* The credits of HeartGold and SoulSilver are the first to feature Gym Leaders, Elite Four members and villainous team members.
* There's a minor quirk involving the Poké Mart signs, in which they are sometimes shown to be placed on the roots of trees, making it appear as if it was built there.
* The Pokédex entries for the Pokémon that existed in Gold and Silver are carried on over to HeartGold and SoulSilver, respectively, much as how FireRed used the entries from the Japanese Red and Green while LeafGreen used the entries from Blue.
* These titles are the first Pokémon games to be available domestically in Canada in French, other than just in English.
* Postcards from the Wedge of The Simpsons that aired for the first time on March 14, 2010, the release date of the games in North America, shows Bart Simpson watching the Pokémon anime. He questions how the show has managed to stay so "fresh" over the years.
* In the Japanese versions of Gold and Silver, Phanpy and Donphan were exclusive to Gold, and Teddiursa and Ursaring were exclusive to Silver. In international versions of Gold and Silver, this was switched for unknown reasons: Teddiursa and Ursaring could be found in Gold, and Phanpy and Donphan could be found in Silver instead. However, all versions of HeartGold and SoulSilver have Phanpy/Donphan in HeartGold and Teddiursa/Ursaring in SoulSilver, making this inconsistent with international versions of Gold and Silver.
* HeartGold and SoulSilver, as well as , have Gym Leader or Elite Four specialists for every type except the Ground type.

Errors
*A typo exists in the script of the English versions. Upon evaluating the National Pokédex with at least 484 of the 493 Pokémon caught when talking to Professor Oak, he, like in all the other Pokémon games he is in, will congratulate the player. However, in the sentence "Meeting you is something l will cherish all my life long!" of his speech, the lowercase L should be an I instead.
Her male counterpart is Lucas. If the player chooses Lucas, she will become Rowan's assistant for the game. Dawn lives in Sandgem Town with her little sister, grandfather, and father - who works as an assistant of Professor Rowan. She is already the Professor's assistant at the beginning of the game. She also demonstrates to the player how to capture Pokémon by capturing a wild Bidoof. In Platinum, she will also demonstrate how to use the Poké Radar.

Dawn is also a character from the anime who travels with Ash and Brock in Sinnoh. She is modeled after the game character.

Platinum Berlitz from Pokémon Adventures and Mitsumi from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure! are based off Dawn's design.

Story
Dawn lives in Twinleaf Town with her mother and dreams big, so she and her best friend (and soon-to-be rival) have high hopes of catching the Mesprit of their nearby Lake. After meeting Professor Rowan and his assistant Lucas, they are attacked by wild Pokémon and as a last resort, use the Pokémon in the briefcase the Professor has forgotten. After bringing the Pokémon back Dawn receives the Pokémon she used as well as a Pokédex and goes on to gather the eight badges of Sinnoh, defeat Team Galactic and conquer the Pokémon League all before taking on the Battle Frontier.

In the events of Platinum, Dawn and Barry instead go to visit Professor Rowan at his lab rather than go to the lake in search of a Pokémon of the same rarity as a Red Gyarados, and receive their Pokémon on Route 201 when Professor Rowan realizes that they are so dedicated to Pokémon as to attempt to travel from Twinleaf Town to Sandgem Town through the tall grass without any Pokémon of their own.

Dawn is given the biggest task yet, much larger than previous heroes. She has to stop Team Galactic from trying to use either Dialga or Palkia to destroy the entire universe in order to create a new one. In the events of Platinum, they attempt to use both plus Giratina.
Counterparts
Like most of the other player characters, Dawn has an anime counterpart who Dawn.

Dawn also has two manga counterparts: Platinum from the Pokémon Adventures manga series and Mitsumi from the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure! manga.

Trivia
*In both English and Japanese, Dawn shares her name with an evolutionary stone. However, it is not the same stone: her Japanese name is the same as the name of the Shiny Stone, not the Dawn Stone.
*After the player defeats the Elite Four and becomes the Champion, Dawn will stay at the front side of Professor Rowan's laboratory in Sandgem Town (if the player chose Lucas). If the player has set the birth date on the DS Settings, she'll say the following in conversation when talked to on that day:

"Is today maybe... Your birthday, (player's name)?"

If "Yes":

"Giggle... Congratulations, (player's name)! And many more happy returns!"

If "No":

"Oh, it isn't? I wonder what made me think that today was your birthday?".
*Upon reaching the Route 207 entrance to Mt. Coronet when playing as Lucas, Dawn will appear and ask the player to choose her right or left hand. However, no matter which hand the player chooses, the outcome will be the same: the player will receive the Vs. Seeker and Dowsing Machine.
*Dawn is 4'6" (1.40 m) tall and weighs 75 lbs (34 kg).
*Dawn and Lucas are asked if they are a couple by Mars during the Lake Verity battle: "So what is it? Are you some lovey-dovey couple to the rescue?"
*Both Lucas's and Dawn's Platinum artwork feature them holding a Poké Ball. This may be a subtle pun that Platinum "repeats" the adventure in Sinnoh.
** This also happened with May and Brendan, where they were shown holding a Poké Ball in their Emerald artwork.
*Like how one of Lucas's default names is Satoshi, one of Dawn's in the Japanese version is Satoko. This is the pseudonym Ash uses in the episode Pokémon Scent-sation! to get into the Celadon Gym.
* The majority of her Japanese default names are shared with Leaf and Lyra. She also shares all of Kris's alternate Japanese names.
* She shares her Chinese name with Wally.

Wild Pokémon (Japanese: 野生ポケモン wild Pokémon) are any Pokémon that are not currently owned by a Pokémon Trainer. They are encountered in most parts of the Pokémon world, most commonly outside of cities and towns, often in tall grass, in caves, or on water. Typically, a Trainer will attempt to capture a wild Pokémon with a Poké Ball but it is also common for a trainer to run from a Pokémon they are not interested in. There are many instances of wild Pokémon being used for assistance without being caught, such as Pokémon Rangers using them to perform a task by directing them with a Capture Styler.

In the games
In the games, wild Pokémon will appear to the player in a variety of locations, most often by walking through tall grass, but also within caves, abandoned buildings, surfing on water, fishing, Rock Smash, headbutting small trees, using Sweet Scent, or by slathering honey on certain trees. Depending on the location, the Pokémon may be different species, and are typically at higher levels in areas only accessible later in the game.

When encountered, a wild Pokémon's moveset will consist of the most recent four moves its species learns by level-up: that is to say, a level 8 Yanma will know Tackle, Foresight, and Quick Attack when encountered in the wild in Platinum, while one encountered at level 19 will have Quick Attack, Double Team, SonicBoom, and Detect. This is true for even evolved species, such as Raichu, which, if it were able to be encountered in the wild, would always know ThunderShock, Tail Whip, Quick Attack, and Thunderbolt.

There are several ways to alter the wild Pokémon encounter rate. One of these, introduced in Generation I, is the use of Repel, which will avoid encounters with any Pokémon of a lower level than the party's lead Pokémon. In Generation II, Pokémon March and Pokémon Lullaby, played on the Pokégear, will raise or lower the encounter rate respectively, while certain abilities and the White and Black Flutes do the same in Generation III and Generation IV.

In Generation IV, if the player is traveling with a partner, wild Pokémon will show up in pairs as well, however, to catch them, the player will need to knock out one of them first.

In the anime
Typically, wild Pokémon do not appear in the anime, which focuses mostly on the Pokémon belonging to Ash and his friends. Most of the Pokémon belonging to the group were shown in the wild at some point, but are usually captured at a later point in the episode, most often at the end. Despite this, there have been several recurring wild Pokémon who appear over a length of time and are not captured. Of all of these Pokémon, only an Aipom that stole Ash's hat went on to be captured several episodes after it appeared.

In the first anime episode, Ash's Pokédex states that wild Pokémon tend to be jealous of human-trained Pokémon, this being one of the reasons that the Spearow Ash hit with a rock attacked Pikachu instead.
Pikachu (Japanese: ピカチュウ Pikachu) is an Electric Pokémon.

It evolves from Pichu by happiness, and evolves into Raichu when exposed to a Thunderstone.

Pikachu is popularly known as the mascot of the Pokémon franchise and a major representative of Nintendo's collective mascots.

It is the version mascot of Yellow, where it is the only starter Pokémon in that game, and has made numerous appearances on the boxes of spin-off titles.

Biology
Physiology
A Pikachu is a short, chubby, ground-dwelling rodent notable for its Electric abilities. Pikachu have short, yellow fur with brown stripes on the back, black-tipped ears, along with an unusually shaped tail, resembling a lightning bolt. Besides its evolution and pre-evolution, it may be related to Plusle, Minun, and Pachirisu, due to notable physical similarities.

Pikachu are known to have acute senses of hearing, thanks to their large ears. Most domestic Pikachu are able to understand and interpret human speech at levels far surpassing those of any pet dog.

In Pika and Goliath!, when Ash's Pikachu was injured, it was shown to have a heart rate of 156.
Gender differences
A female Pikachu has a small "dent" at the end of its tail that resembles a heart.

Special abilities
Exclusive to Pikachu is the ability to release electric discharges of varying intensity, at will, through electric sacs in its cheeks. This electric energy can be manipulated into a variety of techniques which are mostly used in battle, but which can be used to roast berries as well.

As Pikachu build up energy in their electricity glands, it often needs to discharge, as to not result in a short, or worse, which can lead to physical Paralysis, or in severe cases, death. Pikachu release the built-up energy through their tail, which acts as a grounding rod, to safely remove unneeded energy. A sure sign to tell if a location is inhabited by Pikachu is to look for patches of burnt grass, which is the result of the discharge. Through an inability to release a buildup of electricity, a Pikachu may develop a rare condition similar to the human flu. This illness is most often caused by strong nearby electro-magnetic forces, which severely impact the electric glands. If a Pikachu is introduced to a magnet, it will be attracted towards its cheeks, and display other common attributes of magnetism.

Pikachu and its evolution family, Pichu and Raichu, are the only known Pokémon that can learn Volt Tackle. In a few rare cases, Pikachu can learn to Rain Dance Water and, with the help of a surfboard, perform the move Surf. Other rare cases show that Pikachu can also learn, with the use of balloons, to perform the move Fly.

Behavior
In the wild, Pikachu often travel in packs, and are rarely territorial. However, when threatened, a group can generate an intense electrical offensive, and the electro-magnetic forces exerted by the resulting field can even produce a short lived, localized thunderstorm. Pikachu can be harmful pests, eating and sometimes destroying telephone poles, wires, and other electronic equipment.

Despite this, it is a popular pet, and relatively easy to maintain, with little exercise necessary for its well being. However, it is important to discharge the electricity in its cheeks periodically.

As many know, pulling on a Pikachu's tail will result in a severe shock to the offender. Another defense of Pikachu's is the use of its nasty Bite which has been known to leave quite a mark.

Habitat
They are found mostly in forests, but possibly because of their attraction to their electricity or simply because they are not afraid of people, Pikachu commonly show up in civilized areas. They may even enter houses, presumably attracted by the electrical output generated by the dwellers' appliances. Pikachu are native only to the Kanto region, although they have been introduced to many other regions.

Diet
Pokémon food
Living in wooded areas, Pikachu often are found foraging for berries. Instead of climbing trees, they use small electrical shocks to release the berries from the tree, roasting them at the same time.

As pets, they can be fed a variety of processed food. Alternatively, like most Pokémon, Pikachu are tolerant to most "human" foods, and sometimes enjoy them more than the more nutritional food designed for their biology. An example of this is the fact that Ash's Pikachu has been known to have a fondness of ketchup, probably due to to the fact that Ash's last name, Ketchum, sounds like a mix of catch 'em of "gotta catch 'em all" and ketchup.

In the anime
Major appearances
Ash's Pikachu
Ash's Pikachu
Ash Ketchum has a Pikachu that he obtained from Professor Oak in Pokémon - I Choose You!, the first episode of the Pokémon anime series. It has appeared in every non-special episode and every Pokémon movie since.

Ash was given the opportunity to release Pikachu in Pikachu's Goodbye, though Pikachu chose to stay with him. This episode also featured many other wild Pikachu.

A Pikachu named Sugar belonging to the owners of a restaurant went missing prior to Cooking up a Sweet Story!, and Ash's Pikachu had to fill in for it so that its owner would have the confidence to win a cooking competition. At the end of the episode, the Pikachu returns, however, it has evolved into a Raichu.

Sparky, Ritchie's Pikachu
Sparky
Ritchie also has a Pikachu nicknamed Sparky, who debuted in A Friend In Deed. Sparky, unlike most Pikachu, has a tuft of fur on the top of its head.

Ashachu
Ash gets turned into a Pikachu in Hocus Pokémon by a Pokémon magician named Lily. He reverts to his human form at the beginning of the next episode.

Other
At least 20 other Pikachu appeared in Pokémon Emergency! to help Ash's Pikachu defeat Team Rocket's Jessie, James, and MTR to send them blasting off for the first time.

Another Pikachu nicknamed Puka was owned by a man named Victor on Seafoam Island in The Pi-Kahuna. This blue-eyed Pikachu had the ability to sense tidal waves approaching.

A Pikachu has also been owned by Luana's son, Travis. Luana mistook Ash for Travis when she saw Pikachu on Ash's shoulder.

In Lights, Camerupt, Action, Elijah used a Pikachu in one of his movies. This Pikachu helped Plusle and Minun on their mission to rescue Princess Kirlia from the evil Exploud.

In Mewtwo Strikes Back, Mewtwo clones Ash's Pikachu. This Pikachu can be told apart from Ash's due to spikes on the black marks at the tips of its ears. It is also comparatively more aggressive than Ash's Pikachu and slurs its speech, defects possibly caused by Ash tampering with Mewtwo's cloning machine during the cloning process.

A Pikachu also had a part in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Team Go-Getters out of the Gate!. He was kidnapped by a Skarmory and Team Go-Getters set out to rescue him as their first mission. Pikachu provided them with some items in the battle.

Minor appearances
Aside from Ash's Pikachu, Pokémon of this species, wild and Trainers' alike, are rarely seen in the anime. This is most likely due to the fact that Ash's Pikachu is seen in every episode.

James used a Pikachu in the Pokémon League Entrance Exam in The Ultimate Test, but it was defeated by the instructor's Graveler. James, after interfering with a battle Ash was having with the instructor, later tried to steal this Pikachu, only for that Pikachu to zap James instead, as instructed by its instructor.

A Pikachu belonging to an unnamed Aura Guardian appeared in a flashback in The Keystone Pops!.
When Pika is left behind by Red on his trip to Mt. Silver, Pika joins Yellow and Chuchu on their trip to Johto.

Pika and Chuchu share a loving relationship, one that is so strong that even Jasmine noticed, prompting her to hand Yellow a slip with the Pokémon Daycare's address on it. In Volume 13, after Yellow and Wilton are brought to the Daycare after being shipwrecked, Yellow finds that Pika and Chuchu now have an egg shortly after they were "put together." The egg eventually hatches into Gold's Pichu.
Pikachu somehow manages to find its way into many of the expansions, causing there to be known non-reprint Pokémon cards featuring Pikachu. There are also various Trainer cards with Pikachu in the card's artwork too, including the very sought-after tournament promos such as No.1 Trainer.

The first Pikachu that appeared in the TCG was Base Set in the Base Set (which was reprinted in Base Set 2 and in POP Series 2 with different artwork). It was followed in Jungle by another Jungle (which was also reprinted in the Legendary Collection). The third Pikachu card released was the first-ever English Wizards Black Star Promos, Wizards Promo. The original Base Set Pikachu was also released as a special promotional card at E3.

In the early days of the TCG, several notable errors were made regarding the Pikachu cards. The Base Set Pikachu was released with altered artwork at first, depicting it with red cheeks, instead of the original yellow. While this matched Ken Sugimori's artwork, the yellow color on its cheeks was intentional by the artist, who depicted Pikachu using ThunderShock. This error appeared in both the E3 promotional version and the normal Base Set release. A second error was made in the production of Jungle set booster packs, which, instead of the Jungle set's Pikachu, contained, at times, first edition versions of the Pikachu that was released as a promo card.
Adventure Mode
When used in midair, Pikachu will instead make a white ball that will travel in a downward diagonal line until it reaches a platform. In Brawl, there is a blue sphere around the white ball.
Trivia
* The "secret" move for Pikachu's evolution line, Volt Tackle, is actually based on (and in the Japanese version, named after) Pulseman's signature move, Voltteccer. To get this move, a Pichu must be bred from a parent Pikachu or Raichu holding a Light Ball, though this can only happen in Emerald and on.
** A level 10 Pikachu knowing Surf and Volt Tackle can be obtained from Pokémon Battle Revolution by defeating Stargazer Colosseum for the first time.
** Another way to obtain a Pikachu with Volt Tackle is in the Pokéwalker course Yellow Forest.
* Pikachu is the smallest, lightest, and the weakest version mascot, likely owing to the fact that it is neither fully evolved nor legendary, unlike the rest.
*
*There have been two Pikachu balloons in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The first, known as the "Flying Pikachu" was flown from 2001 through 2005, was used in a morning rush hour test of wind conditions in Times Square after an accident in 2005's parade, and made its' farewell appearance at the Party of the Decade in August of 2006 in New York City's Bryant Park. The second version features glowing cheeks and chases a Poké ball balloon, and debuted in the 2006 parade.
* In the games, Pikachu is the first Pokémon to have its cry changed to that of its anime counterpart. This only happened in Yellow. Junichi Masuda details the modification of Ikue Ohtani's voice to a sound capable of being made by the low-tech Game Boy in his Director's Column. In some parts of the game, though, Pikachu's original cry was used.
* Pikachu is in all six regional Pokédexes, though it is only known to be native to Kanto. It is imported from Kanto to Hoenn's Safari Zone and Mr. Backlot's house in Sinnoh. However, it may also be native to Fiore and/or Almia, as their presence there is unexplained.
* Pikachu is the first Electric Pokémon in National Pokédex order.
* Pikachu is one of fourteen Pokémon that one can collect foreign Pokédex entries for in Diamond and Pearl.
* Pikachu and Raichu share the same species name with Rattata, Raticate, Sandshrew, and Sandslash. They are all known as Mouse Pokémon, although Rattata and Raticate have also been called the Rat Pokémon.
* On Red's final team in Mt. Silver at the end of the Johto games, Pikachu was the highest leveled Pokémon to be faced in any Pokémon game, excluding the Stadium/Colosseum/Battle Revolution series and the Battle Tower/Battle Frontier, at level 81. This places it one level higher than the wild Arceus that appears at the Hall of Origin. In Platinum, Barry's final party includes several members that are higher leveled than Red's Pikachu, and higher-level Magikarp can be found in the Resort Area's pond. However, with the advent of , Red's Pikachu is once more the highest leveled trained Pokémon, at level 88, and highest leveled Pokémon after the Magikarp from the Resort Area and discounting Battle Frontier-esque facilities and games as noted above.
* Pikachu is the first Pokémon in the National Pokédex listing to have a baby relative.
** This also makes it the first Pokémon in National Pokédex order to be related to a Pokémon of another generation.
* Pikachu is also the first Pokémon in National Pokédex order that evolves by way of an evolutionary stone.
* Pikachu is the only Pokémon included in the original Pokémon Stadium that was Raichu when the game was released. Strangely, Raichu was excluded from the said game.
* Pikachu is the only starter Pokémon which cannot be evolved in the game that it is the starter for.
** Pikachu is also the only main series starter Pokémon that does not have a 7:1 male to female gender ratio.
*In 2008, Japanese researchers discovered a new protein which helps carry electrical impulses from the eyes to the brain and named it Pikachurin. According to the researchers, the decision was based on both Pokémon and protein possessing "lightning-fast moves and shocking electric effects".
* Pikachu has appeared in every non-special episode, as well as in every Pokémon movie.
* In Red and Blue, Pikachu's sprite shows it having a yellow stomach pouch. This is never shown again in later games.
* Pikachu is the only starter Pokémon to have, at the time, only had one evolution in its evolutionary family. It is also the only starter Pokémon that is not a Fire, Water or Grass type.
* Wild Pikachu are available in every region except Johto. A player would have to travel back to Kanto in order to find wild Pikachu in Generation II.
* On page 81 of Neil Gaiman's novella Coraline, there is a Pikachu doll among the other toys in the illustration.
*Pikachu is the first Electric-type in National Pokédex order. It is also the first unevolved Pokémon in National Pokédex order not to have its name changed in the United States release of Pokémon.
Origin
Pikachu has physical aspects resembling several species of rodents, such as mice. Its ears make it somewhat resemble a rabbit.
Name origin
Pikachu is a combination of ピカピカ pikapika which is Japanese onomatopoeia for sparkle and チューチュー chūchū which is the sound of squeaking. It may be named after the pika, a lagomorph, but this is less likely. "Pika" also means "quick" in Finnish.
Poképédia is a french online encyclopedia for information on Pokémon—including information on the games, anime, TCG, as well as fandom and meta. It is the French language member of Encyclopaediae Pokémonis. The name Poképédia is a portmanteau of Pokémon and Encyclopedia, being a pun on the name of Wikipedia. Poképédia's mascot and logo is Uxie.

History
Poképédia was conceived by username Misdre on the 2nd of August 2007 and publicly opened on 24 September 2007 with just over 80 articles and only a few members. It became a member of Encyclopaediae Pokémonis on September 28, 2007.

On 27 March 2008, Poképédia reached their 1000th article. Poképédia introduced many projects including Project Pokédex, Anime Project and Project BerryDex.

As of mid-December, 2008, Poképédia contained over 1,500 articles and had 341 registered users as of Poképédia's Statistiques. While many of its articles are still stubs, its Pokémon pages have thorough illustrations of generational artwork and sprites (including shiny2 Pokémon), and characters' Pokémon in the games and anime. Its main page has a slightly different format than its English language counterpart, as Poképédia has a column of subjects with illustrated links to portals on the right. Subjects on the left-hand side include editorials, recent discoveries, and works in progress (éditorial, découvertes, et travail en cours).

As of November 2009, Poképédia has over 3,000 articles.

Logo
Poképédia's logo and mascot is an Uxie wearing a puzzle piece around its neck. Uxie was chosen for being the Knowledge Pokémon, as Poképédia intends to be the largest French knowledge base on Pokémon. Strangely, however, Uxie has its eyes open in the logo, where the Pokédex states that anyone who sees its eyes open will lose their memory. Like the other members of its trio, it is pictured with golden eyes, though this is not known to be official.

The puzzle piece around the Uxie's neck may symbolize either the missing pieces of information that are needed to complete Poképédia, or be a reference to Wikipedia's logo, which is a sphere comprised of puzzle pieces.
Route 13 is an east-west route located in southeast Kanto. The eastern terminus is at the Silence Bridge portion of 12. The western terminus is at 14.

Route description
The eastern terminus of Route 13 is actually located on part of the Silence Bridge. The structure heads south, then west along a treeline before reaching solid ground near the southeast corner of a large maze of fences that occupies the entire length of the route. From this point westward, trainers can no longer access the large water body that runs along the southern edge of the route due to a series of shrubs and fences that line the route.

Due west of the maze's east entrance is a hidden PP Up, the location of which is pointed out by a nearby sign. In the northeast corner of the maze is the lone patch of grass along Route 13, accessible only by using Cut to remove a small tree in the way.

On the other side of the maze, the route turns to the south as it becomes Route 14.
Also, due to the closing of the Safari Zone in Generation II, Chansey were added to the route as well.
Differences among generations
Generations I and III
Between Generation I and Generation III, there are no major changes to the route at all. However, the hidden item in the fence was originally Calcium in Generation I but was replaced with PP Up in Generation III.

Generation II
Among the most notable changes in Generation II was the reduction in the length of the route by roughly 60%. Equally notable was the reduction in the number of trainers from thirteen to five.

Generation IV
The route is nearly identical to Generation III. Like Generation II though, the entire maze area is Route 13 instead of being split between Routes 13 and 14. Also, the number of trainers on this route is now 10.

A Bicycle (Japanese: じてんしゃ bicycle) is a key item obtained in the games to facilitate faster movement. Cycling Roads can only be navigated on while cycling.

In Kanto and Johto
In Generation I and Generation II, as well as their FireRed and LeafGreen and HeartGold and SoulSilver remakes, there is only one type of bicycle. It is sold by the Bike Shop (Miracle Cycle in the original Japanese versions) located in Cerulean City (in Kanto), and in Goldenrod City (in Johto). In Cerulean City a List of key items in Generation I is needed, while in Goldenrod City, the owner will give away the bike for free for advertisement purposes. It is the most basic type of bicycle in all of the games, as it only provides faster transportation. There are no obstacles that can be passed only with the bicycle, except Cycling Road in Kanto, which cannot be entered without a bike to ride on.

In Hoenn
In Hoenn, the setting of the Generation III games Ruby, there are actually two types of bicycles: the Mach Bike and the Acro Bike. They are both obtained for free in Rydel's Cycles in Mauville City, and one can be changed for the other at any time after one bike is originally obtained. However, the player may only take one bicycle with them at a time.

This is the first generation to introduce bike obstacles.

Mach Bike
The Mach Bike (Japanese: マッハじてんしゃ Mach Bike) allows players to move a lot faster than the previous models of bicycles. It can move fast enough to ride straight up a muddy slope, or over weak ground without falling through (Sky Pillar). If the player collides with something, all momentum gained is lost and the speed resets. This is the faster of the two bikes found in Hoenn. On Seaside Cycling Road, a player's time and number of collisions while riding this bike from the northern entrance to the southern exit is timed and recorded. This is part of the data sent over to other players when records are swapped.

Acro Bike
An Acro Bike (Japanese: ダートじてんしゃ Dart Bike) travels at the same speed as the original models of bicycles, but it also allows players to perform tricks, such as a wheelie or bunny hop, that let players reach special areas, like climbing up rocks on Jagged Pass. It can also be used for traveling on white rails found on Route 119 and in the Hoenn Safari Zone. The following is a list of tricks that are able to be performed using this bike:
* Hold B button (less than 2 sec.): standing wheelie
* Hold B button (more than 2 sec.): bunny hop
* Hold B, then D-pad: wheelie or bunny hop
* Press B+D-pad direction (perpendicular to direction of travel) simultaneously: sideways hop

A common trick in the Hoenn Safari Zone is to bunny hop up and down on an Acro Bike. This does not count as steps in the Safari Game; however, wild Pokémon can be encountered.

Unlike the Mach Bike, if the player rides on Seaside Cycling Road their time won't be recorded, due to the bike being "easy to turn" in comparison.

In Sinnoh
In Diamond, there is again a single model of bicycle, but it is different from the regular one in that it has two gears—third and fourth. The differences between the two gears, which can be changed by pressing the B button, are similar to the differences between both types of Hoenn-exclusive bikes, as there is a fast gear (fourth) that allows players to travel up muddy slopes, and a slower gear (third) for easier turning. The only difference is that third gear isn't made for performing tricks (though it is capable of crossing narrow rails). It is obtained after the player saves Rad Rickshaw, owner of Rad Rickshaw's Cycle Shop, from Team Galactic in Eterna City. Diamond and Pearl also introduce bike ramps. In the basements of both Oreburgh Gate and Wayward Cave, as well as on Route 227, Trainers can jump over a bike ramp to reach a certain area that would otherwise be blocked. The distance that the bike can jump depends on what gear it is in. There are three terrains that can only be crossed by a bicycle:

* Sandy Slopes - If trying to travel up a sandy slope, a Trainer's feet will sink into the sand and drag them back down, making these hills impossible to climb on foot. However, a Trainer can clear them by setting the bike into fourth gear and gaining a running start.
* Jump Stands - If a Trainer encounters a boulder sticking out the ground in a strange direction in cave, they can switch the bike to fourth gear and gain a running start to clear over two tiles of terrain.
* Narrow Bridges - Narrow bridges that connect two areas of land are just wide enough to allow passage by bike, using either gear setting.

Trivia
* A running gag in the anime seems to be that every time Ash meets up with a new female traveling partner, his Pikachu ends up destroying her bike.
**Following the actual time when Misty's bike is destroyed, it is never acknowledged by anyone that Pikachu destroyed the bike; instead, it is always said that Ash destroyed it. However, Ash took the bike to escape the Spearow, and had he not taken it, it wouldn't have been destroyed with the Spearow when Pikachu used its ThunderShock.
* A reference to Generation III occurs in Rad Rickshaw's Cycle Shop, with the shelves advertising the Mach and the Acro Bikes.
* In the beta version of , a skateboard was planned to complement the bike.
* In Generation II and Generation IV the music for the Bug Catching Contest remixes parts of the original Bicycle theme music from Generation I.
Serebii.net's name is taken from the Japanese name for Celebi. The Pokémon also serves as the site's mascot.

Controversy
Serebii.net has occasionally been the center of controversy, as its webmaster has faced accusations of theft in the past. Serebii, the owner, claims that he has not personally stolen anything since mid-2002. Since mid-2002, however, there has been at least one instance of material appearing on Serebii's site that had been created and/or originally reported by another fansite without credit; Serebii has stated that one incident resulted from the work of unscrupulous fans stealing the material from the original site and passing them along to him, without informing him of the source. Although he has shown reluctance to remove or give credit for such material at times, Serebii eventually accepts to do so in the vast majority of cases. Serebii.net is very protective over its content. The site has functions that disable right-clicking, and highlighting and copying text in most browsers.

Server issues
Serebii.net has suffered from a number of server problems since it burst into the ranks of the major Pokémon sites in 2002. Up until March 2003, its uptime could be called sporadic at best, with large downtimes of up to 6 months, due primarily to Serebii.net outgrowing a sequence of servers that it was being hosted on for no charge.

Due to Serebii's dire situation, Ledian_X introduced Craig Maloof to Serebii, who made an offer to pay for Serebii's server costs. (Craig had previously made this offer towards Archaic for Bulbagarden, though this offer was rejected.) Since that time, Serebii.net has been hosted on Craig's own private servers, with the hosting bills apparently being paid for via the single Google AdWords banner on every page of the site and forums.

In Early 2006, after the site had made enough excess to pay Craig back for the time he personally funded the servers, it was decided to move the servers onto servers under the sole control of Serebii, with assistance from ricocheting, a person who had helped Craig run his servers in the past.

Since then, the site's reach expanded causing many more server issues noted by many users in commencing at the release of Diamond & Pearl in Japan and many users trading in the sites forums. These issues are still plaguing the site at time of writing and are in the process of being resolved. The trading problem, however, has been resolved by different methods, such as sorting Pokémon and not allowing personal trade topics.

Ledges are a common feature of the geography of the Pokémon world. They can be found on most routes, and have been featured in every main series Pokémon game.

Ledges are not just for decoration purposes; they also serve as one-way obstacles. Players are able to jump over ledges and land on the other side, but may never climb back up. A ledge may be strategically placed on a route for one of two reasons. Firstly, the ledge provides a quick return from a new area once it has been reached. Often this removes the need to walk through tall grass (in one direction only). Ledges may also be used in this manner to provide a quick return back to the start of a cave.

The second main use of a ledge is to prevent a player from entering a new area too early. For example, Ethan, Lyra and Kris are able to enter the southern end of Route 46 at the beginning of their Pokémon journey, but cannot reach the northern end (Blackthorn City) on account of the ledges blocking the path. This area is full of high-level Pokémon and being able to travel there at the start of the game would disrupt the storyline of .

In Hoenn, Trainers with an Acro Bike can use it to travel up the ledged paths in Jagged Pass or the Safari Zone by holding the B button and jumping up an adjacent path of stones. This cannot be done in any other routes.

During the planning and development stages of HeartGold and SoulSilver, CoroCoro magazine released some information about the upcoming game including game sprites and locations. Everything in the article was found in the real game with a few modifications and clean ups.

Prototype sprites
Before the game was released, there were pictures from CoroCoro Magazine that showed Silver's, Chikorita's, Pikachu's and Pikachu-colored Pichu's beta sprites. These were changed later on. There is also a beta back sprite of Ethan. His hair is slightly different and there is a symbol on his hat.

Beta screenshots also exist, one of the Slowpoke Well that instead shows a Team Rocket grunt standing where Proton is in the final version, as was the case in the original games, and another of the Mystri Stage in Sinjoh Ruins that shows the three circles being identical instead of three different colors in the final version.

Also, Cyndaquil's sprite in the intro is different from its front sprite in the main game. This may be something in the beta version that was forgotten to be edited in the intro.

Prototype items
*The Photo Album was going to be a key item, but the feature was included in the PC instead.
*Data, including a sprite, exists for the Slowpoketail. It can be obtained through hacking but has no function.
