Events That Will No Longer Happen
I am 99.9% sure the events for Generations II and III will no longer happen at this point in time. The only way that you could ever trigger those events again is through a cheating device (like GameShark). For Pokémon Emerald Version (US version) specifically I found codes that can warp a player to Navel Rock, Birth Island, and Faraway Island that would normally require the ticket needed to get there which is only handed out at these events. Also the Pokémon appear as normal as if the event was legitimately triggered. So does this article really need the part about cheating to obtain the GS Ball and Old Sea Map? I say remove those parts and insert a part below the words Generation II and Generation III where the only way to trigger these events at this point in time is through a cheating device (except for the Eon Ticket because eBay may occasionally show a listing for that card is up for sale). The question is should this change be done? Discuss if needed. --Wildgoosespeeder 08:37, 16 October 2011 (UTC)
Eon Ticket/Southern Island in FRLG?
Since the Eon Ticket seems to have a description in FRLG, I assume it exists in the game code, but can only be obtained via hacking. If this is the case, I think this is worth a trivia note, otherwise information is missing on how to obtain it legitimately.
What is unclear to me after reading this and the Southern Island page is whether or not the Southern Island is present in the game code of FRLG and if it is accessible through a hacked-in Eon Ticket and/or position hacking. If it can be accessed through the Eon Ticket, this should be added to the Southern Island page, in all other cases (not present in the game code, accessible only through hacking) I think this is worth a trivia note too. — Molt (talk) 17:24, 19 February 2014 (UTC)
:I think cheating is wrong, unless you are unable to obtain the pokemon any other way. for example, I live in Canada, and there is some sort of law preventing them from hosting events here. I am getting an action replay, but only to get event-only pokemon that it is physically impossible to get any other way. I even shelled out 30 bucks on a pokemon colosseum bonus disk because its less cheating than an action replay to get a Jirachi. I think there should be lists of gameshark codes on Bulbapedia... I know a lot of people are 'against' codes, but I think a Wiki should strive to include all the information about the pokemon games possible, especially considering that gameshark codes are so well-known in the history of pokemon games ^^
Some people (like myself) simply can't get to those events at all, and once the event's over we have absolutely NO chance of getting that Pokémon; it's even worse when the event only takes place in ONE COUNTRY, meaning that other players have to either: Cheat, shell out ridiculous amounts of money and hope we can get there in time (if we're even lucky enough to hear about it at all...), or try to get over the fact that we'll never have it.
RNG Abuse as Cheating?
I find it difficult to believe that Bulbapedia has no mention of anything short of an external device as "cheating" here. At nationals just this year, I came across a guy with a team of six "legal" shinies with amazing stats that he got using an RNG abuse tactic as employed by the program "RNG Reporter" by Smogon's mingot (http://www.eggmove.com/rngreporter/)

If this merits an entirely different article, feel free to move both this discussion and my edit, but I firmly believe that this sort of tactic is just as broken as action replay or other devices, and so belongs here. Let's get some discussion on this; I talked to the guy who wrote that program himself, and Marriland apparently spot-checked these pokémon and they came out clean, but then so did a team full of from-scratch competitors from at least two of the competitors I know of, one of whom is going on to Worlds last I heard. NonaSuomi 17:27, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
:By that logic using an IV calculator to find your IVs, using a guide to EV train and using Bulbapedia to find out what moves your Pokémon can learn is also cheating, pretty much. If you've never been in the fandom or read a guide and battle someone that has meticulously picked an amazing moveset with really good Pokémon, bred for IVs and ability and EV trained, you could also call that cheating when your opponent was actually just using resources to help him battle. Your opponent still had to EV train, level up etc. (and had to tap the friendship and coin toss apps a bunch too). Technically it could happen to anyone by randomly tapping their apps and doing the right steps, but he was just using a "guide". You could have too. Perhaps there could be a controversy section on the Platinum RNG page or something, but I really don't think that that qualifies as cheating.--<font color="#E7CE6B">Rex</font><font color="#42528C ">Racer</font> 17:41, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
Include CPU "cheating"?
Would it be worth pointing out here some of the times that the CPU has seemed to be capable of 'cheating' in the Pokéverse? Notable examples include: The fight with the rival in RBYFRLG in Cerulean Town, where he is carrying a Lv16 Pidgeotto, despite the fact Pidgey does not evolve until Lv18; Lance's Dragonite with Barrier, a move it is incable of learning; Cynthia's Pokémon having 31IVs in every stat, despite (iirc) the PRNG making it impossible for a Pokémon to legitimately have such stats. And how about more blatent uses of CPU cheating? In Colosseum, for example, the Cipher Admins will use Thunder Wave to paralyse one of your Pokémon, and then continue to target the same Pokémon with Thunder Wave on all subsequent turns if you use a status-healing item, despite the fact that they should not be able to tell you have done such until after they've selected their attacks. If not here, then perhaps an article on the occasional Fake Difficulty in the Pokémon games? --Raylax 15:40, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
Glitches and Random Number Generator
I think we need some information on glitches here other than the word "Glitches". I added a link to the main glitch page. I'm not sure what else should go here... maybe we could list some common glitches used to "cheat" such as the Old Man glitch? But I'm not really sure where to draw the line.

Also someone mentioned this before but it never seemed to be resolved... how about some mention of messing with the random number generator to obtain Pokémon with perfect stats / Shiny Pokémon, etc.? That is definitely cheating... as in, someone who did so would definitely have an unfair advantage over someone who did not. Which is different from catching tons of Pokémon to find ones with good stats, because that is done in a way that the game was made to be played, where messing with the random number generator wasn't. As far as I know it's no different from using a cheating device to alter a Pokémon's stats except for the fact that it can be done with just the game and no third-party device. Dannyjenn 15:36, 21 March 2012 (UTC)]

Edit: Also, why is the neutrality disputed? This article is factual, not biased... the only reason a "Criticism" section is included is because it's important to the subject. Nothing in the article (besides the Criticism section) says anything one way or the other regarding cheating -- not that cheating is good or bad. Dannyjenn 15:42, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
:I'm assuming that the RNG isn't considered cheating because, technically, all you need to do RNG abuse is your game and the system you're playing it on. No Flash cards, no external devices to connect the game to a PC, no garish plastic add-ons that change the game's code as it's run (fox only final destination). It's not cheating because it's not breaking the rules. It's merely... "high performance" playing. The game generates the Pokémon entirely on it's own with no intervention. Whether this breaks the spirit of the game is a completely seperate argument.--Purimpopoie 16:07, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

I used Pokégen to obtain one in my Japanese rom of Pokemon B2 and it worked to change and change back the trio, but in the english rom, it doesn't seem to work. Maybe of this already happened before, with the illegal captured Mew and Deoxys, who wouldn't obey if weren't caught in their origin places. I believe the Item has some kind of mechanic that prevent it from work if the mirror is not obtained legally (I'm not sure as I didn't arrived in the city who you get one). ::Yes, the very same Kami Trio. I got them already in their new forms but the reveal glass didn't work, even after I got an English Landrous. I attemped to use the save of another person to show Landorus in that place where you get the glass, but nothing happened. I think it is the same case from Mew and Deoxys: if some kind of device is not activated after a succesful transference from Pokémon Dream Radar, then the Game becomes aware that you are cheating and completely blocks the Glass even if you attemp to obtain it "legally" in the Shrine. That's my theory. Now that I got my real game and traded all of the Pokémon I'm gonna really test now, but it may take a long time.
::PS.: Sorry for my bad english.
::PS. 2: I moved all of the Pokémon to my R4 rom of Pokémon Black 1 so I could obtain them all in the new game, and somehow the Kami trio reained those new forms there after the trade with the real game. == RNG should not belong on this page ==

Since RNG was put up on the page when it was a fairly new topic, there's been a few talk discussions about why it isn't. Since none of them are recent enough to qualify removal; having it in the article without substantiation and outright calling it 'cheating' is not the proper thing to do. I know it's pretty controversial - but it's manipulation, not cheating. Like analyzing ocean currents to determine the quickest route of travel, RNG abuse does not actively tamper with the game; only normal user input advances the RNG along to a desirable state. No need to have anything interface with the game either. Nintendo/GF has no problem with it (at competitions), they didn't make it impossible (they actually made each successive game has become easier to RNG on), and any RNG'd pokemon is 100% valid data generated by the game like any other random thing you encounter.

Lots of people say "RNG is cheating" only because "bulbapedia says so!!"; similar to how we had to prove Serebii's 'confirmed' Shiny Zekrom/Reshiram false, having unsubstantiated text isn't the way to go. Do a Google search to see the various arguments around the net... the consensus is pretty clear. Uninformed plebs say RNG is cheating; those who actually know what RNG abuse is and how it works say it isn't. It's just manipulation. Kaphotics (talk) 11:43, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
:"The primary complaint against cheating methods is that it takes no particular ability to exploit a glitch or enter a cheat code, and thus detracts from the point and spirit of the game, making it less enjoyable". Taken from the Criticism section of the article itself. While some may argue that RNG abuse isn't within the spirit of the game it, if anything, takes MORE skill and ability than standard play, and certainly more than using cheating devices such as Action Replays and Gamesharks. I decided to alter the description of RNG abuse in the main article as a result. I've not removed it completely, as people may still view it as cheating, but I tried my best to make it clear that views are mixed and that they should make their own opinion about it. Kyogreblast (talk) 00:49, 13 September 2013 (UTC)
::IMO glitches don't belong here either. Cheating should be using any external device or software that is not intended to be used with the game. So using an alternate GTS is cheating (as you're using a server you're not supposed to be), but RNG manipulation is not. Understanding how the game works and using it to your advantage is not cheating. Would intentionally having a Pokémon with a high base speed stat use moves with a high critical hit rate in Generation I be considered cheating because you are using knowledge of game mechanics to your advantage? --<span style="color:#A70000">Snorlax</span><span style="color:#0000A7">Monster</span> 08:07, 14 September 2013 (UTC)
Speed stat = [((IV + 2 * Base + (EV/4)) * Level/100) + 5] * Nature, where IV is the IV in that specific stat, Base is the base stat, and nature is either 0.9 (for one that lowers) or 1.1 (for one that raises). With a neutral nature and absolute crap for IVs (a 0 in Speed, lowest you can get), your Magikarp's Speed at level 50, without any training would be 85. However, I assume it's not yet level 50, at least slightly trained, and doesn't have a 0 in its IVs for Speed. The base stats give you an idea of where the stats will fall (such as, your Magikarp's not gonna likely have 100+ Attack until sometime around level 70) but do not state the exact stats. <span style="color:#FF0000">TTE</span>chidna 18:41, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
Turning Magikarp to Mew
The text says "A glitch in the early Japanese games, Red, Green, and Blue, allowed players to transform their Magikarp into a Mew. However, this Mew was not registered in the Pokédex, did not have the same stats nor moves, and caused some major glitches to the player's items pack." Is this actually true? If so, what is the glitch out of interest? Bardock 23:07, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
:I was about to ask the same thing. Seriously, a claim such as this should be backed-up thoroughly. Redstar 17:05, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

::I know that I'm posting this three years later, but I just tried the glitch and it is real. It's a Select button glitch like the Dokokashira door glitch. What you do is put a Magikarp into the 1st slot in your party, then go into Items and press Select on the 13th item, then press B twice. Then get into a battle and go to switch Pokémon, and press A next to Magikarp. It will become Mew. However, I would highly advise against doing this (especially now that the Mew glitch allows you to get a Mew), as this causes major glitches and messes up the Pokédex, items, and possibly other things. Mew's name becomes a string of seemingly random characters, and (on my game at least), her ID No. and Original Trainer change as well so you can't rename her. She does not have Mew's attacks (I don't know what determines her attacks... in my game she got Fire Punch). I'm not sure if her stats are correct or not, but her HP is glitched, and she has a ton of experience (sending her into battle will level her up to level 101).
::Glitches to the Pokédex include the following:
::- Some Pokémon that you've never seen become registered as seen, and some become registered as owned
::- Some Pokémon that you have owned become registered as not being owned, or not being seen
::- Some Pokémon that you've seen become registered as owned, or not being seen
::- Some empty spaces become registered as owned (you can't view the Pokédex entries for them though)
::- Mew does not show up in the Pokédex... instead slot No. 151 becomes registered as owned, but remains an empty space
::- A slot No. 152 appears as seen with the name ketsuban (MissingNo.) next to it. When viewed, it displays as No. 000
::As for items... the item in the first slot becomes glitched. Also, you can go below the Cancel button. There, the screen starts to get glitchy. You can view items you don't have (some can even be used), and you can see some of the beta items (Coin and ?????) and items that don't exist (they're just made up of random characters and glitched symbols) Dannyjenn 18:12, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
::Edit - I was just playing around with this glitch some more... it turns out that you can turn any Pokémon in your party into Mew as long as Magikarp is the first Pokémon on the list. Also, supposedly it doesn't even need to be Magikarp, just any Pokémon with either Water as its only type or Water as its second type (although I haven't tried it with anyone other than Magikarp). Dannyjenn 19:07, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
:::Yes, it's a select button glitch documented from old Japanese select button glitch websites. Meowth346 made a brief reference to it on the Azure Heights forums back in 2001. Since the glitch was mentioned on GameFAQs by a "gunbladelad77", Paco81 and I tried to get the glitch to work last April, but we weren't able to get it to work (since we don't have a real cartridge or a Japanese Blue cartridge). The game would freeze on the part when swapping the thirteenth item. Relatively recently "ginothepro" made that video on Youtube and posted a thread about it on the GCL forums. As the glitch seems to manipulate large portions of the Pokédex data, you likely won't be able to get Mew registered in the Pokédex, so you're much better off with something like the fossil conversion glitch.

:::The Pokémon actually depends on the index number of the second type; meaning that you can use it to obtain other Pokémon such as Kangaskhan by using the Flying type (both Kangaskhan and the Flying type share an index number of 0x02). Unfortunately, while "ginothepro" and yourself got it to work on a real game, I still haven't been able to emulate it. However, I got the glitch to work using a slightly different method. I'll expand the section you added to list of glitches in Generation I and emphasize that it can be used with different types. == Mistake in the trivia ==
"The Pokédex entries for Magikarp in Gold version and Platinum version contradict each other; Gold version says that Magikarp never jumps more than seven feet, whereas Platinum version states that it may jump over a mountain."

Gold version is saying it cannot jump more than seven feet HIGH, where as Platinum version explains that it jumps over a mountain over the course of multiple years, as in, while never jumping more than seven feet high at a time, it makes its way over the mountain in multiple jumps. And by multiple, I mean thousands. So anyways, they're not contradicting each other, they're stating two different points.
I think the name origin for Magikarp's English name is wrong. While Magikarp does have a corrupted spelling of the word 'magic' in it, I am pretty sure the name is actually a combination of 'majestic' and 'carp'. Magikarp's Japanese name is a combination of 'carp' (Koi 鯉) and 'king' which plays on both the irony of Magikarp's usefulness and the Chinese legend that surround Magikarp and Gyarados (recently recapped in this Bulbapedia article). I believe that there is enough evidence to assume that the name Magikarp is a similar play on words. Also, the reasoning in the name origin now doesn't really make sense. == Sketch ==
Question: What moves can Sketch not copy? Asking because it says almost any move. surskitty 03:19, 20 Mar 2005 (UTC)
:I don't believe Sketch can copy Selfdestruct or Explosion since a Pokémon using one of those moves would faint afterwards, either ending the battle or bringing in another opponent. Plus, Smeargle would likely need to be at a MUCH higher level in order of survive such an attack. Quagbert
*Sketch can copy any move, as it works on moves disabled by things such as paralysis or sleep. --Jshadias 03:47, 20 Mar 2005 (UTC)
But does it copy Struggle, Metronome, etc? surskitty 03:48, 20 Mar 2005 (UTC)
*Everything but Struggle. --Jshadias 03:51, 20 Mar 2005 (UTC)
*Say you in a Double Battle. Your Pokemon are a Smeargle that wants to Sketch move X, and Pokemon Y that knows move X. Pokemon Y is faster than Smeargle. Pokemon Y is asleep. For Pokemon Y, you select move X. For Smeargle, you select Sketch and target Pokemon Y. Pokemon Y's turn executes: nothing happens, as it is asleep. Smeargle's turn executes: Smeargle Sketches move X as if Pokemon Y had used it. End of battle, Smeargle now knows move X. So basically, for Sketch to work, the target need only have *selected* the move-to-be-sketched, not necessarily have used it. This method works for every move except Struggle, which of course cannot be selected. This only works in Gen3, not in Gen2. --MasamuneXGP 04:02, 20 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Sketch can copy Selfdestruct and Explosion. Just be in a double battle. You must have Smeargle and something with Selfdestruct/Explosion. One opponent must have Damp. Use SD/EX. It will fail due to damp. Sketch it.

I have successfully sketched Transform in a double battle. the Smeargle must know Dig, Dive, Fly, Bounce, or Shadow Force. Have Ditto transform into Smeargle and Smeargle use 2-turn move (Ditto must be slower (Lagging tail, anyone?). Transform will fail due to lack of target. next turn, have Smeargle use Sketch on Ditto, do whatever with Ditto (except switch out). Sketch will successfully copy Transform.
Lunar Dance; Smeargle and Cresselia must be your ONLY party members. Go into 2v2 battle and use Lunar Dance. It will fail. Sketch it. I'd assume Healing Wish works similarly.
Also, it is incorrect to say they are 'identical' since when you look at them side by side there's a big difference (in terms of pixels, etc.) <span style="color:red">—<small>♥</small></span> <b><span style="color:orange">Jel</span><span style="color:#90a8e0;">lo</span></b> 01:13, 10 March 2010 (UTC)
I was able to tutor Sketch to Smeargle.
Then I took Smeargle to fight ditto. With the ditto going first, it used transform and then the smeargle used sketch.
The Smeargle learned transform from the ditto->smeargle.
Possibly unrelated, before I tutored, eh smeargle knew false swipe.
Transform
I Have A problem: I just recently taught my Smeargle transform through sketch. Besides that, It had the moves disable and Thundershock. Later on that day, I fought a wild Tauros and used transform. During the battle, it said that an ability called anger point activated, and then after I completed the battle, My Smeargle had lost all of its previous moves, and kept the Wild Tauros'. Can anyone explain how this could have happened? Proctor
:New comments to the bottom please. What game is this in? I know that in some games there is a glitch that causes a Pokémon which has transformed to keep the transformed moveset after the battle ends. You probably activated that glitch. <span style="color:#2D4B98;">Werdnae</span> <small><span style="color:#009000;">(talk)</span></small> 01:46, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Red Gyarados (Japanese: あかいギャラドス Red Gyarados) is a term used to refer to a Gyarados that is Shiny, which is red rather than its usual blue. According to the anime, this is due to the forced evolution; the Magikarp it evolves from retains its red color, having no time to change its scale color to blue. Unlike other Shiny Pokémon, the red Gyarados's existence is canon in that it is encountered as part of an event in the Generation II games and their remakes.

In the games
In Gold and Silver, Crystal, , the red Gyarados is found in the Lake of Rage. The player has one chance to catch it and the incident triggers the battle against Team Rocket in the Team Rocket HQ in Mahogany Town. When captured or defeated, the red Gyarados drops a IV. While this is the only chance to catch the Red Gyarados in the original games, it will respawn in the remakes after the player defeats Lance and the Elite Four, should the player fail to capture it.

In FireRed and LeafGreen, in the Rocket Warehouse located on Chrono Island, one of the computers displays information about induced evolution using electromagnetic waves, hinting at what occurs to other Gyarados in Generation II's Lake of Rage.

Sightings of a red Gyarados were national news. Diamond and Pearl begins with a news report broadcast in Twinleaf Town of Sinnoh, according to which the Red Gyarados had eluded detection by a research crew; it is unknown to which point in time this corresponds in the Johto-based games, although they happened the same time. Also, in Platinum, a cameraman in the Battle Zone comments he filmed it, and claims it was 'award winning'. The player accompanies Barry to Lake Verity in hopes of seeing a similar Pokémon.

While the easiest and most common way to obtain a red Gyarados is at the Lake of Rage in Generations II or IV, any Shiny Gyarados will be red, no matter how it is encountered, through evolution of a gold Magikarp or by encountering it with the normal 1/8192 odds. This is the only possible way to get a red Gyarados outside of the Johto-based games without trading.
History
Original series
The red Gyarados's first appearance was in Talkin' 'Bout an Evolution where it leaped out of the Lake of Rage and fired a Hydro Pump at Ash and ashfr. However, the attack did not hit them. Later, during a Team Rocket plot, Tyson assigned Jessie, James and MTR to capture the red Gyarados. They successfully found the Gyarados and lured it to the surface where the other Team Rocket members caught it in a net. Ash and the group came by and unsuccessfully stopped Team Rocket from getting away with Gyarados, and they too got captured by Team Rocket. Professor Sebastian explained to them that the red Gyarados was forcibly evolved from a normal-colored Magikarp. Since it didn't have time to officially complete the evolution, the coloration of the Pokémon ended up staying red instead of turning blue.

During Rage of Innocence, after Team Rocket's success in catching the red Gyarados, they decided to do some research on it. Meanwhile, Lance found out that the Evolution Inducement Ray was the cause of all the unevolved Pokémon growing tired. He then destroyed its source with the help of his Lance's Hyper Beam. After the machine was destroyed, all of the side effects it caused disappeared. No longer affected by the ray, the red Gyarados began to go on a rampage. It then escaped from the helicopters Team Rocket was carrying it in and dove into the water below. The red Gyarados continued its rampage, destroying everything in sight with Hyper Beam. Ash tried to stop it from going berserk, but it had no effect, making Gyarados retaliate with Hydro Pump. The Team Rocket grunts tried catching it with another net. This time, Ash sent out Bayleef to cut the net with Razor Leaf. Just when the grunts were defeated, the Team Rocket trio arrived and shot a different net at the red Gyarados. Gyarados broke free from the net and went on another rampage, moving towards the river in Mahogany Town. Pryce stopped the Atrocious Pokémon from going any further by having his Dewgong use Ice Beam on the river. Lance, after defeating Tyson, battled the red Gyarados with his Dragonite in order for it to calm down. Lance successfully did so and caught the red Gyarados.

The Red Gyarados reappeared in a flashback in Beauty is Skin Deep when Ash and his friends told Clair about what happened in Mahogany Town.

Advanced Generation series
The red Gyarados did not appear again until the Advanced Generation in The Scuffle of Legends where May, Max and Brock rode on it when Ash was captured by Team Magma. During Gaining Groudon, it ended up helping them out during the fight between Kyogre and Groudon.

Lance's Gyarados appeared in Marina's scrapbook and fantasy, along with its Trainer and his Lance. However, instead of red, the color of the Pokémon in The Legend of Thunder! was the regular blue. This may have been because the original airing of Talkin' 'Bout an Evolution in Japan was after The Legend of Thunder! already had aired. This may also mean that Lance also possesses another, normally-colored Gyarados.
This red Gyarados was shown to be the leader of a group of Gyarados. When Team Rocket used the Goldenrod City Radio Tower to disturb Pokémon with their evolution-inducing waves, these Gyarados went crazy. At the end he was caught by Silver with Gold's aid. After a battle with the Masked Man where even his Hyper Beam attack was futile, this Gyarados was frozen and remained at the bottom of Lake of Rage until Lt. Surge discovered him. Gyarados was able to free himself and Lt. Surge acquired and returned him to Silver following a brief battle between the former Team Rocket triad and itself.

The same Gyarados was then seen participating in Silver's brief search for Entei with Gyara, then traded to Blue, and again in the FireRed & LeafGreen, where he fought a losing battle against Sird's Banette.
