The large black thundercloud is back, as {{p|Zekrom}}'s shadow looms over the lab, and sends a thunderbolt down. As soon as it finishes, {{p|Zekrom}}'s shadow disappears. {{AP|Pikachu}} and {{Ash}} have discovered that Pikachu can use electricity again. Later that night, as Ash, Pikachu, his [[Delia Ketchum|mother]] and [[Professor Oak]] are eating, he states that he wants to begin a new adventure in Isshu, aiming to challenge the Isshu League. [[Professor Araragi]] gives him five [[Poké Ball]]s and the new [[Pokédex]]. The next morning, Ash and Pikachu finally depart to the forest, with the {{p|Mijumaru}} from Araragi's lab following them at their backs.

As Ash wonders what he will capture first (either a [[Bug (type)|Bug]], [[Grass (type)|Grass]] or [[Water (type)|Water]] type), spots [[Iris]]'s hair, confusing it for a [[Iris's Kibago|Kibago]], he then throws a Poké Ball to her head, hitting her. Iris starts yelling at Ash but then forgives him as he apologizes. Iris sees Pikachu and starts hugging him, something that Pikachu dislikes, using [[Thunderbolt]]. Once Iris apologizes to Pikachu for her action, they start talking about the incident of last day, Iris shows interest about the Pokémon behind all this, Zekrom, asking for more information about it; but then, Ash and Pikachu spot a {{p|Shikijika}} and they start chasing it.

In a cave, [[Team Rocket]] are shown talking to [[Giovanni]], stating their infiltration was successful, and vowing they'll soon capture Pikachu and a [[Zekrom (Pokémon)|Legendary Pokémon]]. They request permission to retrieve their Pokémon they have left in the Rocket Headquarters, to which [[Giovanni's secretary]] denies, as using Pokémon that are not native to the Isshu region would raise suspicions, so they will have to catch Pokémon found in this region. The trio accept, before [[Meowth (Team Rocket)|Meowth]] wonders if he will be alright (considering he's not native to Isshu). Giovanni leaves them in charge, which makes the trio happy and pumped up. Back in the HQ, Giovanni's secretary questions his trust in the trio, to which Giovanni answers that he has confidence in them to, if nothing else, cause Isshu's secret criminal organization to reveal themselves. The trio then survey the equipment they have been sent (such as Poké Balls, and more objects), as a flock of {{p|Koromori}} flies at them.

Back in the forest, Ash sees a group of Shikijika wandering around, and tries to capture one in the same way as [[EP001|some time ago]], Shikijika effortlessly headed the ball away, to which Iris replies that he must weaken it first. Ash then sends Pikachu, and the group of Shikijika disbands, and afterwards, a group of {{p|Minezumi}} run past Ash and Pikachu, getting them dizzy.

It is getting dark, and Ash and Iris are still in the forest, Ash is picking apples as he wonders if they can be eaten, then Iris jumps from the tree with dozens of apples, which bury Ash.

As night falls, Iris and Kibago are shown sitting in the tree, while Ash and Pikachu are sitting in the ground, eating apples and talking about Pikachu's trouble without powers, Ash tells Iris that Pikachu couldn't use electric attacks due to Zekrom's action, Iris then starts excitedly talking about meeting Zekrom, as Ash talks about mysterious Pokémon everywhere, Iris and Kibago fall asleep. Ash and Pikachu look at the brilliant, star-filled sky, admiring it and saying that from now on they will be walking underneath that sky, and they see a shooting star, sign of good luck, pumping them up, as they keep on chatting, a sound can be heard on a bush near them, and Mijumaru's head pops up...

The next day, Ash wonders where Iris is, and sees a {{p|Mamepato}}, they start chasing it, finding a group of Mamepato, and Ash tells Pikachu to attack one near them with Thunderbolt, Mamepato faints. As Ash is going to throw the ball, the group angrily attacks Ash and Pikachu, using {{m|Air Cutter}} and {{m|Quick Attack}}, leaving time for the fainted Mamepato to recover so the group can flee, which they do successfully... but one. Pikachu uses Quick Attack and {{m|Iron Tail}}, Mamepato falls to the ground, and Ash quickly throws the Poké Ball, but he's unsuccessful. Mamepato uses {{m|Gust}}, Quick Attack and Air Cutter, Mamepato tries Quick Attack again, but Pikachu dodges it, resulting in the Mamepato hitting a nearby tree, Pikachu uses Thunderbolt as Mamepato gets up, trying to avoid the attack, but it hits, knocking it unconscious, Ash throws the Ball again, this time being successful, and Ash catches his first Isshu Pokémon.

As they celebrate, Iris shows up eating an apple, saying that he's celebrating too much for catching a Mamepato, calling him a kid, but Ash replies he's made a new friend for the Isshu League. As Pikachu and Kibago eat, they are captured by a pair of mechanical hands, as Team Rocket reveal themselves, reciting a new [[Team Rocket motto|motto]]. Iris asks Ash what Team Rocket is, and Ash and Jessie tell her. Iris angrily tells the Team Rocket to give her Kibago back, and then notices a talking Meowth, amazed. Meowth says he's a genius after all, and then they put Pikachu and Kibago in a cage. Ash sends out Mamepato to fight with Meowth, the latter uses {{m|Fury Swipes}}, as Mamepato uses {{m|Gust}}, sending Meowth soaring back. Jessie then sends out her newly-captured [[Jessie's Koromori|Koromori]], who then uses {{m|Air Slash}}, but Mamepato dodges it, and uses Quick Attack; Koromori evades the attack and uses Gust, knocking Mamepato down. Team Rocket attempts to flee in an {{wp|Air Balloon}} as Ash and Iris climb a tree, Ash jumps off the tree but he misses the Air Balloon. When all seems lost, Mijumaru appears out of nowhere and throws the shell into the Air Balloon, tossing Team Rocket down; the box breaks and the captured Pokémon are set free, both Ash and Iris catch their Pokémon as Mijumaru catches the shell, jumping happily afterwards.

Team Rocket isn't going to retreat because of this, Pikachu uses Thunderbolt, but Jessie sends out Koromori first, and uses Air Slash towards Pikachu and Kibago, almost knocking them down, and as Koromori was about to attack again, Mijumaru appears again and uses [[Water Gun]]; Pikachu then gets up and uses [[Volt Tackle]], but Team Rocket disappears behind a smoke curtain, and Pikachu and Kibago faint, as Ash and Iris rush to the [[Pokémon Center]], leaving Mijumaru behind.

Later, at the Pokémon Center, [[Nurse Joy]] tells Ash and Iris that their Pokémon are fit and well, Nurse Joy says that it's the first time she heals a Pikachu, resulting in Ash saying he's from [[Pallet Town]], in [[Kanto]], and that it's the first time he visits a Pokémon Center in Isshu. Iris thanks Ash for helping her, but he says Mijumaru is the one who should be thanked, and then Ash wonders why it helped them anyways, as Mijumaru looks at Ash from outside the Pokémon Center...

Its body is a primarily a brownish-red color, with sections of white fur on its chest, head and legs, and a large flame burning on its head that never goes out. The tail flame it had as a {{P|Monferno}} has disappeared. Infernape wears two gold chest rings in place of a chest plate. It also has swirl-patterned, gold shoulder pads, knee pads, and wrist bands. The blue and red markings it had on its forehead as a Monferno have now changed to a deep blood-red color. Infernape’s scleras are yellow, and its irises are blue. Its hands, toes, and inner ears are also blue. Unlike Chimchar and Monferno, Infernape's head flame never goes out.

===Origin===
Infernape is based on a {{wp|monkey}}. The gold elements in his design as well as his Japanese name are most likely linked to Son Goku, the Japanese interpretation of the character {{wp|Sun Wukong}}. Sun Wukong is the main character in the Chinese epic {{wp|Journey to the West}} and is a monkey with powerful abilities. It is also similar to the {{wp|Vanara}}, a race of ape-like humanoids in the Hindu epic {{wp|Ramayana}}. It is most likely based off the martial art {{wp|Muay Thai}} which uses all the limbs and possibly {{wp|Monkey Kung Fu}}, another type of martial arts. It may have also be loosely based on {{wp|Crazy Monkey Defense}}, a boxing style that incorporated elements from other martial arts such as Muay Thai.

==Synopsis==

{{Ash}} and {{Ashfr|friends}} return to [[New Bark Town]], but before Ash is able to register for the Johto League Championship, [[Professor Elm]] sends him on an errand to retrieve a Pokémon egg from a nearby marine Pokémon laboratory. At the laboratory, Ash and his friends meet up a young researcher who is in a hurry and uses {{m|Supersonic|supersonic waves}} from a {{p|Lanturn}} and detects the singing voices of traveling {{p|Lapras}}. As Ash watches a herd of Lapras from shore, two adults separate from it, one of which approaches Ash. Ash realizes it's his old buddy, his {{AP|Lapras}} that he caught at the Orange Islands, and its mother. It's then revealed that the young researcher's name is [[Naomi]] and that she is studying Lapras Migration routes and is the director of the Pokémon Marine Laboratory. Naomi also mention that Professor Elm told her that Ash will be coming and will retrieve the Pokémon Egg and that's why she know Ash's name. Ash asks Naomi if she spends all her time studying Lapras Migration, Naomi answers yes and that she has been studying the Pokémon Marine Biology, a study of the living patterns of marine Pokémon, she also said that this knowledge improves human life too. Naomi discusses about Lapras migration and why they can navigate so quickly. Naomi says that they can somehow be able to know from a great distance away when the water temperature and season is perfect for them to return. They then share this information with the other Lapras but with an outstanding speed. And she figured out that the key of solving it is in Lapras' voice, then Naomi plays the traveling song that Lapras sing when they travel and they figure out that supersonic attacks can actually pinpoint their location. But [[Team Rocket]] plans to capture the whole herd of Lapras so they can rent them out with {{AP|Pikachu}}. Naomi shows and explains the egg's history and how she got it. Meanwhile, {{AP|Lapras}}, knowing it has been a long time since they saw each other, invites {{Ash}} to play with it..

Ash and Pikachu are then shown riding Lapras, and the three of them are enjoying being with each other again. Off to the side, Lapras' mother watches as they play, looking pleased.

But they suddenly hear the cry of a Lapras, and it is revealed that the whole herd of Lapras was caught in a net, set by Team Rocket. When Ash and Lapras arrived as well as Misty, Brock and Naomi, James sends out {{TP|James|Weezing}}, and Ash tells Lapras to use {{m|Ice Beam}} but James told his Weezing to use {{m|SmokeScreen}} first. Team Rocket then manages to escape with the herd, Luckily, because of {{AP|Lapras}}'s ability to locate the other {{p|Lapras}}, they can follow Team Rocket, Misty and the others follow by using a submarine. Team Rocket uses their secret weapon to boost their speed, leaving Ash and the others behind. Misty calls Ash to transport to their submarine and follow Lapras underwater.

Team Rocket is relieved that they have escaped Ash and the others, but suddenly something strikes their Gyarados submarine and see the Lapras herd working together to escape from the net. A Lapras manages to break the net and release them one by one. Shocked, Team Rocket strives to get to the surface before the other Lapras can escape. Before doing so, Team Rocket notices that there is a bunch of cyclones ahead and with only two Lapras are remaining in the net, they're caught up in the cyclone along with the submarine.

Ash's Lapras locates the herd and they follow Lapras. As Ash's Lapras shouts underwater to signal the others that help is coming, the herd manages to reply back, and Lapras is relieved. Suddenly Ash and company along with Naomi notices that a couple of Lapras was missing, Brock worries that the two missing Lapras might be caught in the cyclone. Ash's Lapras tells the herd to follow, showing it has heard something, but Naomi doesn't detect anything within the radar's range. The herd communicates with each other to guide their movement and fight the strong current, while signaling for the missing two. Naomi suddenly gets something on her radar: the two missing Lapras singing the herd's travel song. Naomi is amazed, realizing that they can distinguish the wordings of their song even when there is so much background noise, and they can hear the songs of their friends from miles away, farther then radar can detect. Naomi notices that they are headed for a nearby island.

On the island, Team Rocket is exhausted but still have the two Lapras in the net. The herd suddenly appears out of the water and Naomi's submarine also appears. But before they can retrieve the two missing Lapras, Jessie and James sends out {{TP|Jessie|Arbok}} and {{TP|James|Weezing}} and Brock chooses to send out {{TP|Brock|Crobat}} to battle against Team Rocket. Brock orders Crobat to use {{m|SonicBoom}} which hits Weezing and Arbok. As Naomi and Misty strive to release the two, before doing so, {{MTR}} stops them but Ash tells {{AP|Pikachu}} to use {{m|Quick Attack}} at Meowth. Ash, Misty and Naomi release the two and Lapras and its mom are happy to be reunited again. Arbok and Weezing was ready to attack but stopped by the herd of Lapras, and they, along with their leader, use {{m|Ice Beam}} in order to freeze Team Rocket's Pokémon. Ash commands Pikachu to use {{m|Thunder}} to blast Team Rocket off. The herd of Lapras are now safe.

At the end of the episode, Ash and his friends are proud of {{AP|Lapras}}. The leader of the herd ask Lapras to take over the lead and Naomi explains that the leader was so impressed by how Ash's Lapras and decide to "hand over" its leadership duty. Ash and his Lapras say goodbye to each other then the herd now set off to travel. Naomi gives Ash the egg, [[Professor Elm]] ask to bring the egg at his lab as soon as he possibly can, Ash and his friends now say goodbye to [[Naomi]] and her {{p|Lanturn}}. And so with the Pokémon egg safely at hand and his memories of Lapras on their mind, our heroes continue their journey to Professor Elm's lab in [[New Bark Town]] and the Johto League.

Mamoswine's debut was in ''[[DP084|Hungry for the Good Life!]]'' as a Swinub. It appeared at [[Mr. Backlot]]'s mansion from a nearby forest. It caused trouble by devouring all of Dawn's [[Poffin]]s, much to the displeasure of Dawn's other {{DL|Dawn (anime)|Pokémon}}. This revealed its gluttonous [[nature]]. However, after helping take down [[Team Rocket]] and rescue the other Pokémon, Dawn decided she wanted Swinub to go with her.

In ''[[DP095|Battling The Generation Gap!]]'', Swinub watched its first {{pkmn|Contest}} when it saw Dawn, {{TP|Dawn|Buneary}} and {{TP|Dawn|Ambipom}} work together to win the [[Celestic Town]] {{pkmn|Contest}}.

While still a Swinub, it was not used very much due to its relative lack of battling experience. It had a very cheerful personality and would often jump up and down in excitement.
Swinub evolved into Piloswine in ''[[DP104|Sleepless In Pre-Battle!]]'' in a {{pkmn|battle}} against Team Rocket. After evolving, though, Piloswine was still very affectionate towards Dawn, as seen in ''[[DP105|Get Your Rotom Running!]]'' where it tackled her to the ground out of affection.

However, its personality drastically changed. In ''[[DP106|A Breed Stampede!]]'', just two episodes after evolving, Piloswine started to disobey Dawn. Knowing numerous powerful attacks, Piloswine felt much stronger and more confident than it did as a Swinub. It then attacked {{TP|Dawn|Piplup}} for touching its fur presumptuously. It started to develop an indifference towards Dawn and rushed towards her only after she threw its favorite food, [[Poffin]]s, around, forcing it to run around to eat the Poffins. It even tried to attack Dawn with {{m|Ice Shard}} , instead freezing half the body of {{AP|Grotle}}, who tried to stop it from rampaging. Immediately after that, it rushed all the way towards Dawn and the others, nearly crushing everyone, only to be stopped by {{an|Brock}}'s muscular {{TP|Brock|Happiny}}. Dawn agreed to have a battle with her Piloswine and [[Ash's Grotle]]. However, it ignored Dawn's commands and used {{m|AncientPower}} instead.

It later evolved again into {{p|Mamoswine}} after being attacked by Team Rocket. Unfortunately, it has kept its bad behavior from when it was a Piloswine, and even charged at the gang in a rage, only to be stopped by Brock, who told Dawn to return it to its [[Poké Ball]]. Despite this, Dawn is still eager to train Mamoswine well.

In battle, {{P|Mamoswine}} has shown to be incredibly powerful thanks to its large and powerful physique. It was shown to take {{TP|Dawn|Piplup}}'s {{m|BubbleBeam}}, {{m|Whirlpool}} ''and'' {{m|Peck}} in quick succession with no resistance at all as well as knocking it out for the third time in ''[[DP106|A Breed Stampede!]]''.

In ''[[DP109|Leading a Stray!]]'', Dawn tried to call for its help removing a broken manhole cover, but it turned its back to Dawn and refused. Dawn then bribed it with [[Poffin]]s in order to follow. Although it did help, it then happily threw Dawn and Piplup into the air, eating the Poffins while it was left to {{TP|Brock|Happiny}} to catch them.

In ''[[DP114|Another One Gabites the Dust!]]'', Mamoswine wasn't really excited to watch Dawn in the contest. Instead, it just slept with a pompom on its head. Later on, during Dawn's battle with [[Ursula]], Mamoswine seemed to watch with interest, seeing Dawn and {{TP|Dawn|Pachirisu}} use Pachirisu's {{m|Super Fang|new move}} to the fullest.

In ''[[DP119|Trials and Adulations!]]'', Mamoswine was injured during a battle against a {{pkmn2|wild}} {{p|Aggron}}. Dawn and her Pokémon used the first aid skills taught to her by Brock in ''[[DP094|Doc Brock!]]'' to help Mamoswine recover, and later attempted to protect Mamoswine against Team Rocket. As a result, Mamoswine started obeying Dawn and under her instructions, it was able to defeat Aggron.

In ''[[DP123|Old Rivals, New Tricks]]'', although it pretended not to be interested, Mamoswine helped {{TP|Dawn|Ambipom}} train for the upcoming [[Pokémon Ping Pong Tournament]]. Later during the contest it tried to sleep instead of cheerleading, however when Ambipom started battling [[Kenny's Prinplup]] it started to watch and eventually got completely drawn into the excitement, watching the match wide-eyed.

In ''[[DP134|Promoting Healthy Tangrowth!]]'', Dawn decided to train the Twin Tusk Pokémon for her upcoming Contest, all going well until Mamoswine gets embarrassed and angry over an accident and runs off into a jungle causing Dawn to go after it. Soon, a wild {{p|Tangrowth}} appears and attacks Mamoswine, defeating it with Tangrowth's {{m|Absorb}} sapping it of its energy. After learning the real reason why Tangrowth attacked, Team Rocket appears to cause havoc, it learns {{m|Hidden Power}} in the process of attacking Team Rocket's machine. Also during this episode, Mamoswine shows that it still has a tiny bit of a rebellious attitude, but when Dawn is in danger it does not hesitate to help her.

After its evolution, Mamoswine is usually seen sleeping when outside its [[Poké Ball]]. During Dawn's Contests or practices, it pretends to be asleep as it watches Dawn and her Pokémon perform.

In ''[[DP146|Dressed for Jess Success!]]'', Dawn used Mamoswine in the battle round of the {{to|Lilypad}} Contest, making it its first contest. Earlier in the episode, Dawn taught it a trick that utilizes swallowing {{m|Ice Shard}} to create ice spikes on its back, inspired by {{AP|Grotle|Torterra}} swallowing its own {{m|Energy Ball}}. Despite this, during the Contest battle against {{TP|James|Carnivine}}, it lost its temper and began rampaging out of control, resulting in a loss. However, Mamoswine was sadden by the loss and was eager to begin training again.

In ''[[DP155|Double-Time Battle Training!]]'', Mamoswine trained with Piplup as a partner but it did not go well. The same went for Pachirisu. [[Dawn's Cyndaquil]] was the one to work well the best with Mamoswine. During their practice battle against [[Zoey]], Zoey's {{p|Kirlia}} used {{m|Psychic}} to control her {{p|Leafeon}}'s {{m|Magical Leaf}}, defeating both Mamoswine and {{p|Cyndaquil}}.

In [[DP162|Playing the Performance Encore!]], Mamoswine, along with Cyndaquil, was used for the [[battle round]] of the {{town|Daybreak}} {{pkmn|Contest}}. The Flame-Ice combination was used by Dawn in the battle against her first foe's {{p|Houndoom}} and {{p|Mightyena}}, but it failed due to the ice melting. In the battle with [[Ursula]], Dawn started with using both of Mamoswine and Cyndaquil's capabilities. Mamoswine swallowed Ice Shard which made the fur on Mamoswine's back and head freeze into large spears of ice which cause extra damage when {{m|Take Down}} is used. It was also used with the double contest battle against Ursula's Minun and Plusle when Cyndaquil used {{m|Swift}} to surround Mamoswine. Cyndaquil then turned the flame on its back on as the two charged for Ursula's {{p|Plusle}} and {{p|Minun}}. Despite Ursula losing some points, the move failed to hit the two Pokémon. After managing to work together to both attack and defend against Ursula's Pokémon's attacks, as well as mastering the Flame-Ice combo, Dawn managed to win the battle, earning her fifth ribbon.

In [[DP175]], Mamoswine was used alongside {{TP|Dawn|Pachirisu}} in the first battle round of the Grand Festival against Ursula's {{p|Gabite}} and {{p|Flareon}}. Despite a good start, Mamoswine and Pachirisu soon found themselves struggling and Mamoswine found itself overpowered by {{p|Flareon}}'s {{type2|Fire}} moves as well as a powerful {{m|Scary Face}} and {{m|Shadow Ball}}. However Pachirisu and Mamoswine were able to pull off Dawn's newest improvised move, ''Ice Chandelier'', despite Pachirisu having originally practiced with {{TP|Dawn|Buneary}}. As a result, both Gabite and Flareon were defeated.

It was seen again in [[DP186]] without its Trainer, where it helped [[Ash's Gliscor]] training with its {{m|Giga Impact}}.

Bulbasaur acted as the village's bodyguard, but after Ash helped defend the Hidden Village from an attack by [[Team Rocket]], Melanie encouraged it to join Ash, explaining that its growth was being stunted by staying too long in the village. Although Bulbasaur initially appeared to distrust Ash, it agreed to join him. In ''[[EP017|Island of Giant Pokémon]]'', it alone assumed that Ash had abandoned it and the others. Its views on Trainers were presumably colored by all the abandoned Pokémon in the Hidden Village. Over time Bulbasaur grew to trust its new Trainer.

Bulbasaur is extremely stubborn, surly, and eager to battle. It had the opportunity to [[Evolution|evolve]] after battling a powerful {{p|Rhyhorn}} with a very strong {{m|Take Down}} attack in ''[[EP051|Bulbasaur's Mysterious Garden]]'', but refused to do so despite facing a mass of {{p|Ivysaur}} as well as a {{p|Venusaur}} who were angry at it for ruining the Bulbasaur evolutionary festival. This allowed it to learn the powerful {{m|SolarBeam}} technique earlier than if it had evolved. It has the heart of a fighter and it never gives up in a battle. It has the determination to keep fighting even if the odds are against it, defeating such varied opponents as an {{p|Exeggutor}}, a {{p|Venonat}}, a {{p|Beedrill}} and a {{p|Scyther}} despite the type disadvantages. On one occasion Bulbasaur, along with {{AP|Pikachu}}, was briefly lent to {{an|Misty}} to allow her to compete in the [[Princess Day]] Festival with a more balanced team, Bulbasaur single-handedly winning her first match by defeating a {{p|Kingler}}, {{p|Pinsir}}, {{p|Cubone}} and {{p|Raticate}} on its own. Bulbasaur is frequently viewed as the responsible leader of Ash's Pokémon, especially due to its actions at Professor Oak's lab. It is also a Pokémon Ash values more than most of his other Pokémon, possibly because he always wanted to catch one, as explained in ''[[EP010|Bulbasaur and the Hidden Village]].'' It also formed a bond with {{AP|Pikachu}} and {{AP|Squirtle}} while they fought together while part of Ash's team.

Trainer Tokens are received when the player first reaches 1,000 points and every time they reach 120,000 points after that.

==Synopsis==
The episode begins the same way as [[Pokémon Red and Blue Versions|Pokémon Red]], down to the style of the images and the sound. A {{p|Nidorino}} and a {{p|Gengar}} are exchanging attacks in a {{pkmn|battle}}. After Nidorino dodges Gengar's attack, it leaps at it. At the same time, the [[Pokémon games|game]] starts to come to life, with the small frame enlarging into the entire screen, and the monochrome [[Pokémon]] fading into color.

The two are battling in a stadium at the [[Pokémon League]], watched by crowds of fans. Gengar dodges Nidorino's {{m|Horn Attack}}, and then jumps on its head to make an opening to put it to sleep with {{m|Hypnosis}}. As Nidorino falls {{status|Sleep|asleep}}, its {{pkmn|Trainer}} recalls it into its [[Poké Ball]], and then throws out another to take its place. The Gengar jumps back as an {{p|Onix}} comes out. It tries to {{m|Tackle}} into Gengar face-first, but misses and hits the battlefield instead. It pulls back up, unfazed.

This battle is being watched on television by a boy from [[Pallet Town]] named [[Ash Ketchum]]. He is now ten years old, which means he can become a [[Pokémon Trainer]]. Tomorrow, he will receive a [[starter Pokémon]] from [[Professor Oak]] and start his Pokémon journey, the first step on the long quest of his dream of becoming a [[Pokémon master]].

His mother enters the room and reminds him that it is 11 o'clock at night, and that he should be asleep. He complains that he is too excited to fall asleep. As a compromise, his mother changes his television's channel to [[Professor Oak's lecture]], and tells him to go to bed when the program is finished.

That night, he dreams about the starter Pokémon as he tries to decide which one he wants. First, he dreams of choosing and sending out {{p|Bulbasaur}}, and then {{p|Squirtle}}. The night turns to morning, and Ash, still in bed, dreams about if he chose {{p|Charmander}}. Suddenly, he bolts awake to find that he threw his {{p|Voltorb}}-shaped alarm clock in his sleep, and it had smashed against the wall. Afraid that he might have overslept, Ash bolted out of his house in his pajamas and runs as fast as he can to [[Professor Oak's Laboratory]].

Outside the laboratory, a crowd of people had gathered, including a group of {{TP|Gary|cheerleaders}}. Ash pushes through and bumps into his [[rival]], which is the grandson of the professor, [[Gary Oak]]. Gary taunts him for being late. He tells Ash that he has already received his starter Pokémon from his grandfather. He boasts to the crowd that he will make Pallet Town famous by becoming a Pokémon master. Ash, however, is more interested in finding out what starter Gary chose. Gary tells him that it was the best one, and then leaves in a red sports car, followed by the crowd.

Before Ash can say anything about how upset he was by his rival, Professor Oak approaches him. Ash drops his anger and asks about getting a Pokémon. Professor Oak seems doubtful that he's ready, since he showed up in his pajamas, but Ash insists that he's ready.

Inside Oak's laboratory, three Poké Balls were set up on a storage device, with a place for a fourth in the center. Ash decides that he would like to start with Squirtle, but when he opens the Poké Ball, he found that it was empty. Professor Oak tells him it was taken by a [[Gary Oak|Trainer who wasn't late]]. After this, he decides he'd like Bulbasaur, but this Poké Ball is also empty. He has no choice but to go for the last choice, Charmander, but the final Poké Ball is also empty. The three were all taken by Trainers who arrived on time, and it seems that there is no Pokémon left for Ash.

Professor Oak mentions that he has another Pokémon, but that there was a problem with it. Ash wants it anyway. In the fourth spot in the middle, a Poké Ball appears that has a lightning bolt mark on it. He picks it up and hands it to Ash. The ball opens, and in a burst of lighting, {{p|Pikachu}} comes out of the ball. Ash loves the cute Pokémon, and picks it up and hugs it. Pikachu doesn't like this, and shocks him with an {{t|Electric}} attack. Oak hands him a [[Pokédex]] and six Poké Balls, but gets shocked as well when he touches Ash.

When Ash steps outside the laboratory, he finds a small crowd had gathered as well, including his mother, who is sad to see him leaving. She gives him his [[bag]] full of supplies, and starts explaining everything she packed for him. He gets embarrassed and pulls it away. She sees Pikachu, and wonders why it isn't in its Poké Ball. He tries to get it in, but it hits the ball back every time. Ash says that they are friends, despite Pikachu's behavior. His mother calls it weird, and in anger, it shocks the entire crowd (excluding Professor Oak) with its electricity.

Soon, Ash sets off, trying to get a handle on the rebellious Pokémon by wearing rubber gloves and dragging it with a clothesline leash. After getting tired of dragging it along, he tries to talk to it and find out what is wrong, only to find out that Pikachu can't say anything but its name. He tries to convince it to get back in its Poké Ball, and pulls out his new Pokédex for information on it. His Pokédex explains that Pokémon must be kept in the Poké Ball. Then Pikachu clicks it and it explains that not all Pokémon like to be kept in Poké Balls. Ash decides to earn Pikachu's trust by treating it nicely, and he unties the clothesline and takes off his rubber gloves. Pikachu turns away.

Then, a {{p|Pidgey}} walks out near them, and Ash scans it with his Pokédex for more information. He is eager to catch it, however, Pikachu doesn't want to help him and instead, runs up a tree. Frustrated, Ash decides to try and catch the Pidgey without Pikachu's help. He throws a Poké Ball at it, but the Pidgey breaks out easily. The Pokédex explains that a Pokémon should be weakened before it can be caught. Pikachu laughs at Ash. He tries again. This time, he attempts to throw his pajama shirt on top of the Pidgey, but the bird blows him off with a {{m|Gust}} and then hits him with a {{m|Sand-Attack}} before it flies away. Pikachu laughs at Ash more. Ash turns and sees that a {{p|Rattata}} is digging through his bag. He scans it with his Pokédex, which mentions that Rattata is a forest Pokémon. Just as Ash questions why it came out into the field, the Pokédex explains that it sometimes leaves its habitat to steal from ''stupid'' travelers. Pikachu laughs at Ash even more.

Ash turns and notices a group of Pidgey in the field. He throws a rock at them, which only scares them away. However, he sees another bird Pokémon in the field and throws another rock at it, which hits it in the back of its head. When it turns to look at him, however, he realized that he didn't hit a Pidgey; he scans it with his Pokédex and learns that it is a {{p|Spearow}}, which is considerably less friendly than a Pidgey. The Spearow swoops several times to attack him, and then spots and targets Pikachu instead. The Pokédex explains that wild Pokémon are sometimes jealous of trained Pokémon. Just as the Spearow is about to knock Pikachu out of the tree, Pikachu shocks it with an Electric attack, knocking it out of the sky.

The Spearow, however, cries for help, and Ash and Pikachu start running away from a flock of angry Spearow. Pikachu ran ahead of Ash, and the Spearow fly after it, attacking it until it fell to the ground. The Spearow start swarming around it, but Ash grabs his injured Pikachu and runs straight to a waterfall. He jumps into the river below to escape the Spearow, and is being dragged into a large pond, narrowly swimming out of the path of a {{p|Gyarados}}.

On the shore of this pond, a {{an|Misty|girl}} is [[fishing]], and is excited to find that she had a bite. However, instead of a {{type2|Water}} Pokémon, she pulls out Ash and Pikachu. She doesn't care about Ash, but is very concerned about the injured Pokémon in his arms. She tells him that he needs to take it to the [[Pokémon Center]] in [[Viridian City]], and points out the way to go. However, he hears the distant cries of Spearow, and turns to see the flock in the sky, flying toward him. He steals the girl's [[bicycle|bike]], putting the Pikachu in its basket, and rides away, promising that he would bring it back someday. The girl screams at him as he rides away, but he ignores her.

He quickly starts to ride to Viridian City, with storm clouds above him and the tens of Spearow in close pursuit. Soon, it starts to rain. He rides the bike over a ledge, and it falls on its side, which knocks Ash and Pikachu off. Ash finds himself looking at his injured Pikachu lying on the ground, with the Spearow approaching and the storm growing worse. Desperate to save his Pokémon, he leaves Pikachu's Poké Ball next to it, and then stands before the Spearow, telling them to attack him in order to give Pikachu time to get inside its ball where it would be safe. However, just as the Spearow are about to dive on Ash, Pikachu leaps up and over Ash's shoulder. It jumps at the flock of Spearow. The lightning from the storm is drawn to Pikachu, highly raising its potential and strength by vast amounts, and it uses a massive electrical attack to take out the entire flock, as well as the girl's bike. Pikachu is drained of stamina from the effort.

Once the storm has cleared, Ash and Pikachu both rise from where they were knocked back on the ground, exhausted but victorious. Ash looks up and sees {{an|Ho-Oh|an unknown Pokémon}} majestically flying through the sky, over the rainbow that had been left after the storm, but his Pokédex could not identify the species.

He continues on, carrying his new friend Pikachu, who licks him while in his arms as he walks the rest of the way to Viridian City, knowing that something big is ahead of him; something to fight for.

* When Ash is carrying Pikachu to the nearest Pokémon Center, [[Ash's hat|his hat]] is initially forwards. In the next two scenes, it is backwards. In the last scene, Ash's hat is facing forwards again.

This was cut from the [[dub]] (the screen freezes just as Ash answers Misty) due to direct violence controversy.
