While it's completely fine to disagree with an edit and question its validity, you undid ii kanji's edit despite her leaving a solid amount of evidence on the talk page and without addressing anything of her points. There's nothing wrong with having your doubts about the evidence of course, but undoing an edit with "I'd beg to disagree" without addressing any of ii kanji's points and not stating ''why'' you disagree and/or offering any counterpoints to her evidence is a bit strange. Especially since you were the one requesting evidence from ii kanji in the first place. :The big difference is that you're talking about the airing order for the latter example. That doesn't have any impact on how this wiki presents the anime chronology. If the plot of an individual episode like [[JN001]] is clearly set before the main plot of the overall anime (Ash's journey), then I'd say it's a flashback. == Correction to the timeline ==

It seems I found a continuity error in the timeline. I wanted to fix it myself, but I didn't want to mess it up like I do almost everything.

The error is: the placement of the events of Mewtwo Strikes Back. The trivia section of Make Room for Gloom says the movie takes place before this episode, but the official timeline says that the events of the movie take place before The Evolution Solution.

Think you can clarify which of these is true?

Mahri asks asks Misty's name and then she hugs Misty and decides to take her to the Trovita Gym to thank her properly, calling her "Big Sister Misty". Ash runs and catches up to Mahri and Misty, when Rudy, Mahri's older brother, introduces himself as the Trovita Gym Leader. Rudy asks Misty if they could be married. Misty blushes, then Ash says "I challenge you! You creep! If you want Misty, you have to go through me first!" Misty then thinks Ash is in love with her, but then Ash reveals that he is only looking for his next Gym Badge.

Rudy then had Ash prove himself by shooting down targets with his Pokémon. Ash is angry as Rudy seems to be paying more attention to Misty and not evaluating his Pokémon's performances. After he shoots down all of his targets, Mahri, Rudy and Misty are gone. Ash eventually finds them in another room as Rudy is telling Misty "The days of simply teaching our Pokémon methods of attacks are long gone. By training them in the arts, like modern dance, we improve their ability to learn". Ash responds by coming in and dancing with all of his Pokémon, by the end of the night, both Ash and Rudy are exhausted from all the dancing.

The next day, Ash and Rudy battle for the Gym Badge. {{OBP|Ash's Pikachu|EToP}} loses to Rudy's {{p|Electabuzz}}, [[Ash's Bulbasaur]] wins against Rudy's {{p|Exeggutor}}, and then [[Ash's Squirtle]] wins against Rudy's {{p|Starmie}}. ==Plot==
A young girl named {{OBP|Mimi|EToP}} spots a UFO when she is outdoors with her {{p|Jigglypuff}}. They run over to investigate and they see a whole herd of Clefairy exiting the spaceship. Mimi is reminded of a film she saw recently, ''Clefairy in Space'', which is about a group of Clefairy that visit the Earth from their home planet, Clef.

{{OBP|Ash Ketchum|EToP|Ash}}, {{an|Misty}} and {{an|Brock}} have seen the film as well, which Ash considers degrading to the Clefairy, saying that the movie depicts them like {{wp|E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial}}. When he adds that nobody knows what the Clefairy are really like, Misty and Brock give him a hard time, reminding him that he has [[ET03|witnessed a Clefairy evolution ceremony]]. Ash wonders aloud how {{an|Professor Oak}} is doing, when Oak appears behind him.

Prof. Oak explains that he has been asked to appear on TV along with another professor, [[Oswald|Professor Orville]]. Professor Orville is interviewed for TV, asserting that the recent UFO sightings in Apple City support his theory that Clefairy are from outer space. He goes into further detail, noting that there have been many strange occurrences in the city, such as electronic devices behaving strangely and objects floating in midair. Professor Oak objects to this, stating that Clefairy are very rare and unlikely to appear in a city, and that their {{t|Psychic}} powers aren't necessarily strong enough to cause such odd disturbances. Meanwhile, Mimi is back in her home, wondering where the Clefairy she saw the night before were.

When out to dinner at a restaurant with Professor Oak, Ash and friends notice the table beginning to shake and tip over. In the commotion, a shadowy figure runs off with a dinner plate. Professor Oak sends out a {{p|Sandshrew}} and has it use {{m|Fissure}} on the shadowy figure, which turns out to indeed be a Clefairy. {{AP|Pikachu|Pikachu (EToP)}} runs after it and attaches a tracking device.

Several Clefairy head for Mimi's house, intending to steal more food. She introduces herself and Jigglypuff and befriends them, offering them food voluntarily.

Prof. Oak deduces that the Clefairy distract people with their Psi powers, then steal food in the commotion. He and Ash head for the sewers, where they discover a colony Clefairy living deep underground.

The UFO turns out to belong to [[Jessie]] and [[James]], who were using it to try to steal a Clefairy to sell on the black market. However, the Clefairy used their Psi powers to crash the ship. They emerge from underground near Mimi's house, where she is asking the Clefairy to take her to the stars so that she can visit her dead mother, who she was told is now a star in Heaven. Professor Orville, Oak, and Ash race towards the house, with Orville excited to see real aliens. Jessie and James corner Mimi, capturing all the Clefairy in {{i|Poké Ball}}s. Mimi takes all the Poké Balls from them and runs to her room, but James takes them back, dropping one. The dropped Poké Ball opens, releasing one of the Clefairy, who attacks Team Rocket with {{m|Metronome}}. At this point, Ash arrives, battling James and Jessie. To stop the battle, Jigglypuff uses {{m|Sing}}, putting everyone to sleep.

When everyone awakened, the Clefairy had all left the house, and had deserted their underground nest as well. Ash reassures Mimi that the Clefairy will return to visit her again one day.

==Plot==
The chapter begins with a view of a small town developed under and around a large tree. As the human characters work some jobs to make money, {{AP|Pikachu|Pikachu (EToP)}} and {{AP|Bulbasaur}} are going for a walk when they happen upon an {{p|Ivysaur}}. Pikachu comments on the amount of seed Pokémon, Bulbasaur and its evolutions, there are in the town. Ivysaur tells them a story about how the Venusaur Tree, the large tree in the middle of the town, was spawned by a {{p|Venusaur}} who defended the townspeople in battle, spurring the people to take good care of seed Pokémon. Bulbasaur claims that the story isn't true, and is only a tale that the people made up, while Ivysaur insists that it is true, and the Venusaur has become a Guardian Spirit and lives in the top of the tree. To prove it, Ivysaur talks to three Venusaur, all with contradicting stories, causing Bulbasaur to doubt the story further.

Meanwhile, Jessie and James, up to no good as usual, are seen flying a small VTOL ("Vertical Take-off and Landing" aircraft) up to the top of the tree to steal the rumored 300 year-old Venusaur at the top. While attempting to land their aircraft on the branch, the branch brakes, causing the VTOL to fall to the ground and explode, leaving the reader unsure if Jessie or James survived.

Later, Ash's Bulbasaur and the local Ivysaur it met earlier are still debating about whether the Venusaur at the crown of the tree truly exists. Pikachu, irritated by their constant arguing, suggests that if Ivysaur's so sure the mythical Venusaur exists, why doesn't it climb the tree itself to find out. Inspired by the suggestion, Bulbasaur and Venusaur begin climbing the tree using their vines as grapples. They make quick progress, followed by Pikachu riding on Pidgeotto's back.

Upon reaching the top level of the tree, Bulbasaur and Ivysaur look around, but see no sign of any Ivysaur. Disappointed, Ivysaur is about to admit Bulbasaur was right, when he notices something. He rushes towards it, the other Pokémon following him, and they emerge into a small clearing at the very tip of the tree to find what appears to be a huge Venusaur, composed of interwoven branches. Pikachu remarks that it resembles a huge topiary, suggesting that humans wove the branches to create the image of Venusaur. Amused by the irony of the truth, Bulbasaur and Ivysaur roll on the branches laughing, until from the bushes emerges Jessie, James and Meowth!

Narrowly escaping the aircraft when it fell, they had been trapped on the tree for "25 years" as they described it, but the narrator comments that it was really only 2 or 3 days. Having lost their radio, they were unable to contact Team Rocket HQ for rescue, and so were trapped until the arrival of the Pokémon. Determined to steal Pidgeotto in order to fly down from the tree, they send out Arbok and Weezing to battle. In the midst of the battle, Pikachu leaps into Weezing's mouth, and despite Bulbasaur's warnings that he'll ignite Weezing's gas, Pikachu lets out a ThunderShock. The resulting explosion blasts apart the nearby branches, causing everyone in the vicinity to fall. Pikachu is caught by Pidgeotto, but Pidgeotto is unable to carry more than one Pokémon. Bulbasaur uses one vine to grab hold of Ivysaur, and the other to attempt to grab a branch, but misses. Falling to a rapidly approaching demise on the unforgiving ground below, Bulbasaur in a final effort prays to the tree's guardian spirit to save them.

As the sun rises, flowers all over the tree begin blooming, and petals fall to the earth below. A particularly large bloom is swept by the wind underneath Bulbasaur and Ivysaur, on which they float slowly to the ground. People in the town look up to see showers of petals falling on the breeze, and Misty admires their beauty.

On the ground, Ivysaur ponders whether it was the Guardian Spirit that saved them, or pure coincidence, to which Bulbasaur responds he is sure it was the spirit. Ivysaur asks if Bulbasaur is going to make a wish, to which Bulbasaur replies that he believes he's already used his up. The chapter ends with Bulbasaur, Ivysaur and an exhausted Pikachu admiring the tree and the sunrise.

[[Nurse Joy]] tells Ash that Pikachu is too stressed and prescribes rest and relaxation in the country. The group decide to camp in a field near a large forest. A herd of wild {{p|Pikachu}} watch them from afar. Ash's Pikachu wants to make friends with the wild Pikachu, but they don't like it because Pikachu's human-trained.

Suddenly, a wild {{p|Pinsir}} attacks the herd of wild Pikachu. Ash's Pikachu chooses to defeat the Pinsir, even though the group snubbed it before. In the commotion, a Pikachu with a flower on its head falls into the river. Ash's Pikachu goes in after it and rescues it. The wild Pikachu choose to accept Ash's Pikachu into their group after all, and it runs off with them to celebrate. Off in the distance, [[Jessie]] and [[James]] plot to capture the entire group.

It is sunset and Pikachu still hasn't returned, causing Ash to worry. [[Misty]] reassures Ash, reminding him that Pikachu is being treated as a hero. However, another full day passes, and Pikachu still hasn't returned. Ash is feeling lonely and calls out to Pikachu, but it doesn't return. Ash calls his other Pokémon out to spend time with them instead, but {{p|Oddish}} uses {{m|Stun Spore}} on him, followed by {{AP|Charmander}}'s unidentified {{type|Fire}} attack. Ash gives up and recalls all of the Pokémon to their Poké Balls.

Pikachu finally returns, but Ash gives it the cold shoulder, since it took so long to come back. It asks for food and Ash reluctantly hands over a box of [[Pokémon food]]. Pikachu runs over to the flower-head Pikachu and they run off together with the food. Ash freaks out and gets even more upset with Pikachu.

That night, Team Rocket steals all of the Pikachu while they are asleep, except for Ash's, which ran away. Pikachu is seen trying to open the Poké Balls that Team Rocket put all of its friends in. Ash helps it open one ball, which turns out to be the flower-head Pikachu. Ash then commands Pikachu to defeat Jessie and James' {{TP|Jessie|Arbok}} and {{TP|James|Weezing}}. Pikachu wins the fight, but then runs off with the flower-head Pikachu once again.

The next morning, Ash and {{ashfr}} decide to leave the forest without Pikachu. Just as they are about to leave, though, Pikachu runs to catch up with the group. Ash asks Pikachu if it's sure it wants to leave the forest, and it agrees. The wild Pikachu wave goodbye as the group leave the forest.

==Plot==
The story starts with Ash and Brock traveling together. We are told that Brock is taking a break from leading the [[Pewter City]] [[Gym]] to travel, though he returns to it between training journeys.

The duo head north by train to [[Fuchsia City]] to watch the famous [[Fuchsia Free-For-All Race]], part of the [[Nomads Independence Day]] celebrations. A herd of {{p|Tauros}} stampedes past the train window. On arriving in Fuchsia City, Brock suggests that they should immediately register for the race; however, Pikachu leaps off Ash's shoulder and darts away into the crowd, having spied Misty. Ash and Brock become re-acquainted with the four sisters of the [[Cerulean City]] Gym. As Brock works his charm on the three older sisters, Ash and Misty each decide to test the other's skill as a Trainer. The competition is to capture a wild Tauros, but as they argue the Tauros charges towards them. They retreat and fortunately are rescued by Lara's Ponyta. Later that day Ash and Misty have a meal at Lara's homestead. She is a hardy breeder, but her right arm is in a sling. After eating, she takes the pair out to properly meet Ponyta. She explains that her Ponyta is a thoroughbred, which is why its coat is pure white; it also means Ponyta is very fast.

Ash inquires if Lara is ready for the Free-For-All Race (not quite remembering about her injury). Misty nudges him and reassures Lara that she can "knock them dead next year." With a sad smile Lara informs them that this is the final year of the race due to the danger involved.

As Ash and Misty wander through town that evening, an interview is broadcast on a big screen. The 'favorite to win' the Free-For-All Race (Dario) is being asked about Lara's injury. He jokes that Lara had some bad luck before the race and adds that her Ponyta threw her off. Unrest develops amongst the crowd watching, which accuses Dario of causing Lara's accident- It seems that year after year, Dario uses dirty tactics in his attempts to win. A hot-headed Ash decides to race with Ponyta in Lara's place to save her reputation. Ponyta shows his agreement by flipping Ash onto his back, and Ash demonstrates his riding ability (or lack thereof) by falling right off again.

Over the next few days, Lara puts Ash through his paces with a rigorous training regime. She teaches him the correct way to sit, hold the reins and to command Ponyta confidently.

On the day of the race, all the riders line up at the start. Dario is riding a Dodrio. The race starts, and the riders disappear into the dust cloud. As the dust lifts, we see Dario taking a huge lead. Most of the riders are still bunched together in the middle, but lagging furthest behind is Ash. Soon, fights begin to break out between the other competitors' Pokémon, and a few riders are thrown from their mounts. Dario is still in the lead, but Ash has managed to gain some ground as they reach the foothills of [[Mt. Spirit]].

As Ash and Ponyta climb the steep ledges, a boulder narrowly misses them, and over the ridge Dario is talking to some other men riding {{p|Doduo}}. They inform him that the other competitors have been eliminated and that he shouldn't have any competition. Ash overhears this and becomes even more determined to win.

He springs over Dario and gallops into the lead. Dario's henchmen are unable to stop Ponyta, but Dario releases some {{p|Blastoise}}, {{p|Wartortle}} and a {{p|Squirtle}} to douse Ponyta's flames. Pikachu uses a {{m|Swift|Speed Star}} attack to stop them; however, one remaining Blastoise hits Ponyta with {{m|Hydro Pump}}.

Back at the stands the onlookers see a shape coming out of the fog- it's Dario. With no other competitor in sight, it looks as though he's set to win the race. Suddenly, out of nowhere, another shape begins to close in on him at high speed. It's Ash, clinging desperately to a speeding Rapidash- Lara's Ponyta evolved. As the two remaining riders approach the finish, they draw neck and neck. A final burst of speed from Rapidash puts the flag in Ash's hands.

Dario makes one final attempt to snatch the flag from Ash, but Rapidash sends Dodrio flying into the distance with a kick. The Chapter ends with a photo of Rapidash, Pikachu, Ash, Misty and Lara.

==Plot==
A weary {{OBP|Ash Ketchum|EToP|Ash}} finally arrives in front of the [[Saffron Gym]] and challenges [[Sabrina]], but faints soon afterwards. Later, a fully restored Ash, alongside {{AP|Pikachu|Pikachu (EToP)}}, eat and talk to Sabrina. She tells him that she had dreamed he was coming and Ash compliments her premonition skills. Soon afterwards, [[Brock]] arrives and joins in the conversation. He teases Ash about him not really coming to [[Saffron City]] only to challenge Sabrina. Ash, flustered, replies that it is indeed the only reason, much to Sabrina's cluelessness. Sabrina accepts Ash’s challenge and fights using an {{TP|Sabrina|Abra}} which was sleeping when the battle started. Sabrina tells Ash to go on with the battle since Abra can fight even while sleeping. Ash commands Pikachu to use {{m|Thunder Shock}}, but Abra {{m|teleport}}s away, dodging the attack. Pikachu tries using the same attack repeatedly, yet Abra kept teleporting and dodging each one. Eventually, one of the Thunder Shock attacks gets reflected and hits Pikachu, knocking him out, and making Ash lose the match.

Later at the [[Pokémon Center]], Ash expresses his amazement of {{t|Psychic}} Pokémon, and Sabrina warmly welcomes him to stay at the Gym for as long as he wants, since he could watch and learn how other [[Pokémon Trainer]]s battle. [[Nurse Joy]] appears and announces to Sabrina that she has a phone call to attend. Sabrina excused herself leaving the two boys, and then Brock tells Ash that he thinks that Ash has a weakness for cute girls. Ash confirms it, and they both shake hands in understanding. Ash then asks Brock what he is doing in Saffron City in the first place. Brock replies that he and Sabrina are old friends and he happened to be around. Ash prods further about being no further than old friends, but Brock asks to not rub it in, since he gets depressed easily. Sabrina picks up the phone, and she is told that something is back.

A week later, Sabrina lies unconscious in a hospital bed. The phone call she had received was about the [[Black Fog]], a high level {{p|Haunter}} who has been preying on people and {{OBP|Pokémon|species}}'s souls for years. A group of Trainers explained what had happened. Sabrina had fallen prey to a Haunter’s {{m|Dream Eater}} attack and her soul had been sucked out. While most people had given up the fight, the group of Trainers vowed to get rid of the wretched Pokémon. Sabrina made the same vow since she wishes to exact revenge for her Pokémon who got wiped out by that Haunter back when she was eleven years old. But when she was helping her friends last time, she herself had her soul sucked out by the Haunter’s Dream Eater attack and ended up in a coma.

As they were talking, Abra suddenly moves and writes "[[Lavender Town]]" on a clipboard telepathically. The group then realized that it is Sabrina. Even if she had her soul sucked out, she can still tell them where she is through telepathy. Ash then assumes that she may still be alive, and Brock adds that there has been a person who came back to life after the Haunter was defeated and agrees that they could bring Sabrina back. Whipping out a {{i|Poké Ball}}, Ash suddenly exclaims that he will be catching a Haunter. Brock scolds the young Trainer but Ash says that it is a Pokémon after all. Gleefully, he deduces that if it is big, they could always make a giant [[Poké Ball]] for it. The leader of the troupe laughs at Ash's idea yet quickly agreed. It is a Pokémon after all, and as such it is catchable.

The group quickly develops a giant Poké Ball and stationed themselves outside the [[Pokémon Tower]] in Lavender Town. The giant Poké Ball or Enormo Poké Ball XI has a capture net that is a hundred times more powerful than an ordinary Poké Ball, so normal Pokémon have no chance against it. Then they get a report of the Haunter sleeping in the Tower, and the leader quickly orders to move out. The first group enters the tower and lures out the {{p|Gastly}}, followers of the Haunter. After that, Ash enters and wakes the sleeping Haunter by throwing rocks at it. Brock is surprised that the gas Pokémon could take a solid shape. After throwing another rock, the Haunter charged at the Trainers. Ash and Brock quickly got their whole party to attack. Although the Haunter was too strong and presses everyone to the wall using a strong psychic attack.

Before any of the Pokémon could get crushed, Sabrina combines her powers with her Abra and neutralizes the Haunter's attack. The Haunter then uses {{m|Night Shade}}, to which Ash responds by commanding {{AP|Fearow}} to use {{m|Mirror Move}}. It reflected its attack but Haunter quickly uses Dream Eater, eating up the attack and defeating all the Pokémon with no effort. Having no more opponents, the Haunter goes for Abra. But Pikachu quickly got up, and saved Abra using {{m|Agility}}. The Haunter chased the two Pokémon out, luring it to the giant Poké Ball where it got caught. When everything seemed to be over, the Haunter uses {{m|Explosion}}. It destroyed the giant Poké Ball and escaped. The wounded leader said that even if it escaped, its health must be very low and now it can be caught with just an ordinary Poké Ball.

Following Sabrina's lead through Abra, Ash finds the Haunter hiding underground. Pikachu and Abra work together and manage to land a devastating {{m|Thunder}} attack on the Pokémon. Ash sees his chance and throws an [[Ultra Ball]]. Unfortunately, before it could reach the Pokémon, Haunter uses {{m|Self-Destruct}}, killing itself and causing the underground cavern to collapse. The moment Haunter dies, Sabrina wakes up and teleports Ash to safety, who was about to be crushed by falling debris.

They teleported back up to the surface and see the partly destroyed statue of a Haunter. Brock says that people used to worship Pokémon like gods in the past, and that maybe the Haunter was used to being worshipped, it would rather kill itself than get caught, fitting for a god. Sabrina started sobbing, saying that it can no longer hate the Pokémon, despite doing so for ten years. She threw herself to Brock and starts to cry it all out. Ash starts crying too as Brock tries to comfort Sabrina. Brock wonders if he's crying out of sympathy, but the boy replies that the Ball he threw and got destroyed was an Ultra Ball that he had bought with the last of his allowance.

Fearow plummets through the trees, stopping the Mankey, and Ash orders Pikachu to use {{m|Thunder Shock}}. However, in a panic, one of the Mankey slams against a {{p|Beedrill}} nest, prompting a swarm of the {{type|Bug}} Pokémon to arise and slice at Ash, Pikachu, and the Mankey troop.

Later, at a nearby town's [[Pokémon Center]], Ash is informed by the attendant that his skill level hasn't risen even though he recently captured more Pokémon.

The attendant informs Ash that his captures for the day, a Mankey and a Beedrill, are both Rank D. Rank D Pokémon are common and anyone can catch them anywhere.

Ash pouts and comes to the conclusion that catching more Pokémon will cause him to raise to the rank equivalent to someone who has a {{Badge|Thunder}}.

Ash and Pikachu sit down to eat, and Ash laments that he might not be able to become a member of the Pokémon League before his leave of absence from school is up.

Ash overhears [[Giselle]] brag about catching a "Rank A" Pokémon, and Ash sighs, thinking that Pokémon Training is more like school and less fun than he thought it would be. However, memories of {{Gary}} and [[Daisy Oak|May Oak]] renew his enthusiasm and he insists that he won't fail.

Ash travels downtown in search of secret insider Pokémon information. A tiny Pokémon courier shop advertises maps to the location of rare Pokémon, and even though Ash thinks it sounds fishy, he enters the shop.

Inside he meets a suspicious-looking man, and Ash turns to leave when the merchant hits a sore spot by suggesting that Ash was wondering how to catch up to a rival. The merchant then offers to show him a map to a nest of {{p|Clefairy}}, which are a "Rank A" rarity Pokémon.

Ash thinks that catching a Clefairy will be such a feat the Pokémon League will admit him right away. After some haggling, Ash trades the Mankey he recently caught for the map to the Clefairy nest.

Ash ends up wandering through the forest with a crudely drawn map showing that in some vaguely defined area southwest of Mt. Moon, "HERE THERE BE CLEFAIRY".

Although he's discouraged, Pikachu pumps Ash up by telling him that Clefairy are definitely somewhere in the [[Mt. Moon|Moon Mountain Range]], and that Ash should never give up. Ash and Pikachu soon despair when they realize how big the Moon Mountain Range is.

After three agonizing weeks in the wilderness, Pikachu and Ash finally spot a Clefairy wearing a necklace. The duo scrambles after the Fairy Pokémon, only to have it hop away into a cave.

Ash and Pikachu suddenly realize they're in peril, when they find that they're inside an {{p|Onix}} nest. Ash and Pikachu are driven further into the maze of tunnels the Onix has created. Ash checks his [[Pokédex]] and discovers that [[Brock's Onix]] was at a lower level than this wild Onix, which is why they were able to defeat it.

Ash laments Misty's absence, as he could use a {{type|Water}} to easily defeat Onix. Without a Water-type, Ash has to review his Pokémon and figure out what might be a decent strategy. After rejecting using Fearow, Beedrill, or Pikachu, Ash decides to use his {{AP|Butterfree}}.

Butterfree uses {{m|Psychic}}, which weakens Onix, but also confuses it — causing it to thrash around and cause a cave-in that buries Pikachu and Ash under a pile of rocks.

Ash passes out and has a dream about May pinching his cheek, only to awaken and find out that the Clefairy with a necklace is yanking on his face.

[[Professor Oak]], dressed in a giant Clefairy outfit, leaps up while stuffing ramen into his face and asks if Ash is alright. Ash panics, thinking that he's found a man-eating Clefairy before he recognizes Professor Oak from his picture in the Pokédex.

Ash is star-struck and thanks Professor Oak for rescuing him, but the researcher explains that a Clefairy dug Ash out of the rubble by using a {{m|Metronome}} attack. Ash hugs the Clefairy with a necklace and thanks it for saving him.

That night, at the Clefairy's nest in a giant tree, Professor Oak explains that he's been living with the Clefairy for the past three months, and explains Clefairy only trust those who love and protect them.

Ash explains that he knows Gary, and that he desires to become a [[Pokémon Master]]. Professor Oak reminisces about how his father was a [[Pokémon Professor]] who took him on research expeditions, which prompted him to begin his journey at just six years of age with his {{p|Charmander}}. Oak then explains that something incredible will be happening the next night.

Before he can explain any further, a teenage boy shows up and apologizes for being late, having brought Professor Oak the DVD recorder and noodles he had wanted.

Professor Oak introduces the teenager as Bill, a young genius who works for the Pokémon Cutting-Edge Technology Research Center and the mastermind behind the Poké Ball Storage and Retrieval System - which greatly impresses Ash.

Bill greets the Clefairy, who happily jump for joy and cuddle him. Professor Oak explains that Bill was the one who discovered the Clefairy colony and managed to befriend them.

At sunset, Ash, Bill, Professor Oak, and the Clefairy adorn themselves with feathers and walk up to a great water-filled crater. Professor Oak records the proceedings on his camera and explains that the Clefairy have invited them to be guests of honor at a special ceremony.

Bill and Oak explain that even though it's known that Clefairy evolve into Clefable, no one's ever actually witnessed a Clefairy evolution firsthand.

A full moon rises, and six Clefairy begin to dance around an adorned rock while the others in the colony beat drums.

Meanwhile, Bill and Ash get to know each other better. Bill tells Ash that he couldn't even spell "Pokémon" when he first started out, but the year he started on his Pokémon Trainer's Journey was the first year they let students take a leave from school. Bill hated school back then, so he was willing to do anything to get out of it. However, as he shared adventures with his Pokémon, he grew closer to then. He finally decided to study Pokémon when he witnessed his {{p|Ivysaur}} evolve into {{p|Venusaur}}.

The ceremony begins, and Professor Oak explains that once they reach the right age or level, all unpaired Clefairy in the tribe become the center of an evolution ceremony held near a lake on the night of a full moon. Three Clefairy are going to evolve in this ceremony, including the one that saved Ash's life.

Another Clefairy hands the three humans [[Moon Stone]]s, and Ash is curious about the rocks. Professor Oak explains that it's a meteorite that has a mysterious effect on Pokémon genes.

Bill touches his Moon Stone to one of the Clefairy. It shimmers and in a burst of light and wind, evolves into a Clefable and begins to fly away.

Bill explains that only the bravest Clefairy choose to evolve, since leaving their home to see the world makes them vulnerable to predators who don't exist in the mountains.

Ash finally understands. He looks on in surprise at the Clefairy who rescued him. Ash touches the Moon Stone to the Clefairy and it evolves, flying up to meet the two other Clefable. All three of the humans, teary-eyed, enthusiastically cheer on the Clefable as they fly away into the night sky.

The next day, Professor Oak and Bill drop Ash off from their hover-truck, and give him an upgrade to the Pokédex as a gift.

Ash runs off as Bill comments that Ash looks different. Professor Oak reminds Bill that nobody can resist the call of adventure.

The first chapter of Pokémon Adventures, much like the first games, chronicles the journeys of {{adv|Red}} and {{adv|Blue}} across the [[Kanto]] region, conquering its eight [[Gym]]s and the [[Indigo Plateau|Pokémon League]]. Later, a third Trainer, {{adv|Green}}, is added into the plot. Together, the three defeat [[Team Rocket]], an evil organization that uses Pokémon for illegal acts. Red also helps [[Blaine]] to capture {{Adv|Mewtwo}} and saves {{adv|Yellow|a young girl}} from [[wild Pokémon]] in [[Viridian Forest]] called Yellow, who appears in volumes 4-7. In the end, as in the games, Red defeats Blue in the Pokémon League.

The Yellow chapter starts two years after {{adv|Red}} obtains his title of the Champion in the [[Indigo League|Pokémon League]]. {{adv|Red}} disappears for one month after he leaves to answer a challenge from someone named [[Bruno]]. One day, {{adv|Professor Oak}} discovers Red's {{p|Pikachu}}, [[Pika]], injured at his doorstep. Soon after the arrival of Pika, a young Trainer comes into the Professor's lab. The Trainer, {{adv|Yellow}}, claims that "he" is a friend of {{adv|Red}} and wishes to look for him with Pika. While {{adv|Professor Oak}} is still skeptical about Yellow, especially about "his" ability of healing and sensing Pokémon's emotions, he eventually entrusts this mission and Red's upgraded [[Pokédex]] to the young Trainer. However, this event only triggers the revelation of a larger secret as Yellow is repeatedly attacked by members of the [[Elite Four]]. When Yellow discovers that the Elite Four base is situated at Cerise island, Yellow heads there and meets up with Blaine, Blue, Green and the Team Rocket Commanders: Sabrina, Lt. Surge, and Koga. They decide to team up to take down the Elite Four, where {{Adv|Red}} also joins them.

As peace is returning to [[Kanto]], new journeys and happenings are beginning in another region, [[Johto]]. {{adv|Gold}} was enjoying his normal life with his family Pokémon, who have been with him since birth, until he ran into a Pokémon thief at [[Professor Elm]]'s lab. As he goes on a journey of chasing the thief, {{adv|Silver}}, with a {{p|Cyndaquil}} from Professor Elm and [[Pokédex]] from {{adv|Professor Oak}}, he stumbles upon the secret plots of the [[Masked Man]]. At the same time, {{adv|Professor Oak}} sends out a "Pokémon Capture Professional," {{adv|Crystal}}, on a journey of completing the Pokédex. She gets involved in [[Eusine]]'s plans to capture {{p|Suicune}} and tries to do so herself. Soon after, she also gets involved with the plots of Masked Man, who is apparently after the two Legendary Pokémon, {{p|Lugia}} and {{p|Ho-Oh}}. The more shocking revelation follows: this Masked Man is actually one of the eight [[Gym Leader]]s of the Johto area.

Things have just settled down in [[Kanto]] and [[Johto]], but another new region comes on screen. This chapter is about the "rivalry" of {{adv|Ruby}} and {{adv|Sapphire}}, who are trying to conquer all the [[Pokémon Contest]]s and [[Gym]]s in [[Hoenn]] respectively within the span of 80 days. Just like their counterparts in Kanto and Johto, they encounter two evil organizations, the land-favoring [[Team Magma]] and sea-favoring [[Team Aqua]]. Team Aqua steals the heart component from Mr. Stone, President of [[Devon Corporation]], while Team Magma steals the [[Submarine Explorer 1]]. Team Aqua destroys the volcano using the Grand Meteor, disrupting the balance of nature. Sapphire picks up a piece of the Grand Meteor and keeps it, but not for long, as soon she and Ruby clash with the leaders [[Maxie]] and [[Archie]] as the two new [[Pokédex holder]]s attempt to quell the two titans {{p|Groudon}} and {{p|Kyogre}}.

The FRLG series continues the series featuring the characters {{adv|Red}} and {{adv|Blue}} as they are forced to explore the [[Sevii Islands]] to look for {{adv|Professor Oak}} who has been kidnapped by [[Team Rocket]]. Meanwhile, {{adv|Green}} has finally located her parents, but as she is about to meet them, they get swallowed up by a mysterious black hole after a {{adv|Deoxys}} attacks them. Red, Green, and Blue must locate the missing relatives with the help of former foe [[Lorelei]], the psychic mutant {{Adv|Mewtwo}} and a mysterious old lady, [[Ultima]], while defeating Team Rocket again at the same time. Back in [[Kanto]], {{adv|Silver}} is seeking his parents as well, with the help of {{adv|Yellow}}. He is soon shocked by the revelation of who his father really is. In the end, {{adv|Red}}, {{adv|Blue}}, {{adv|Green}}, {{adv|Yellow}}, and {{adv|Silver}} are all petrified.

However, even with a seemingly unmatched ability in battling and access to every Pokémon {{adv|Crystal}} has ever caught, [[Guile Hideout]], the mysterious stranger that attacks [[Noland]] and is seeking {{adv|Jirachi}}, may be more of a worry than they first thought, especially if he catches Jirachi first.

An important family from the region of [[Sinnoh]] sends their latest descendant {{adv|Platinum}} on a special mission with two [[Paka and Uji|bodyguards]]. Platinum instead meets with {{adv|Diamond}} and {{adv|Pearl}}, who coincidentally match the description given to her (two boys in scarves, one in red, the other in green). They join her, believing she is the tour guide of a trip to [[Mt. Coronet]] they won as a prize in a comedy contest. But these misunderstandings mark the start of their Pokémon journeys.

Meanwhile, {{adv|Diamond}} and {{adv|Pearl}} set off with Sinnoh Pokémon Association Chairman and [[Dr. Footstep]] to find the Legendary and Rare Pokémon of Sinnoh using Charon's stolen notebook on Legendary Pokémon.

{{adv|Blake}} is a seemingly normal boy enrolled in the [[Aspertia City]] Trainer's School. However, he is actually a member of the [[International Police]] who aims to find the remaining members of Team Plasma that was defeated two years ago. Unbeknownst to him, the new student, {{adv|Whitley}}, happens to be a former member of Team Plasma.

{{adv|X}}, a boy who won a Pokémon Tournament as a child, has become depressed due to bad experiences with the paparazzi and the public speaking bad about him. Although his friends {{adv|Y}}, {{adv|Shauna}}, {{adv|Tierno}}, and {{adv|Trevor}} try to get him back to normal, he refuses to listen to them. Meanwhile, [[Team Flare]] is aiming to capture both {{adv|X}}'s [[Key Stone|Mega Ring]] and the Legendary Pokémon [[Xerxer|Xerneas]] and {{p|Yveltal}} to power their [[ultimate weapon]].

She meets {{adv|Sun}}, a dedicated delivery boy who aims to collect 100 million yen for a classified purpose. Meanwhile, the [[Island Kahuna]]s realize that the [[guardian deities|Tapu]] have been agitated by something and decide to revive the old custom of [[island challenge]] in order to appease them. In the midst of all these events are also the mysterious girl named [[Lillie]], accompanied by the [[Legendary Pokémon]] {{p|Cosmog}}, and the equally mysterious young man [[Gladion]], who is seeking to get stronger in order to defeat the strange beings known as [[Ultra Beast]]s.

Pokémon Adventures has been licensed for English translation by three different companies: [[VIZ Media]], located in {{pmin|the United States}}, [[Chuang Yi]], located in {{pmin|Singapore}}, and [[Shogakukan Asia]], also located in Singapore.

===VIZ Media===
Beginning in September 1999, Pokémon Adventures was translated into English and published in the United States by [[VIZ Media]]. Originally, the series was available as a series of [[List of Pokémon Adventures monthly issues|monthly single issues]], a popular format at the time, and the rounds were later released in the more traditional graphic novel format, beginning from {{PAV|1}} in April 2000. Publication ceased in 2003 after the {{chap|Yellow}} concluded with {{PAV|7}}. These translations read from left-to-right with the artwork in reverse from the original version, to conform with the style of North American comics and other Japanese manga published at the time. Other content, such as the route maps at the end of every volume, was omitted as well. Samples from this translation of Pokémon Adventures can be found in the [[The Best of Pokémon Adventures]] volumes, which were both published in 2006.

In June 2009, VIZ Media began re-releasing the series beginning from {{PAV|1}}. Rather than just reissue the previous translations, VIZ Media opted for a "second edition" - these volumes feature a new translation, with the right-to-left artwork and all of the content omitted from the previous translation restored. However, the new translation still follows closely to the original translation, containing some of the same dialogue and all the same titles for the rounds, as well as a lack of nicknames for {{Adv|Red}}'s or {{Adv|Green}}'s Pokémon (although Red's Pokémon receive nicknames in later volumes). In addition, these second editions contain edits not found in the first edition, such as the editing of {{adv|Green}}'s battle with [[Sabrina]] in ''[[PS032|A Little Kadabra'll Do It]]'' to remove the scene of Green hiding {{i|Poké Ball}}s in her top and the [[Pokémon controversy#Racism|recoloring of Jynx]] to match its current color of purple.

Following the second edition of {{PAV|7}}, VIZ Media has begun to release volumes which are new to North America, beginning with {{PAV|8}} in August 2010. While continuing the format of the second editions, there are some edits in the new-to-American audience volumes, like editing a scene of {{Adv|Crystal}}'s mother slapping her in {{PAV|11}} into a glare and editing the scene of [[Norman]] punching {{Adv|Ruby}} into him dropping Ruby due to lightning in {{PAV|17}}. VIZ Media took a break in publication following the release of {{PAV|14}} in August 2011, which concluded the {{chap|Gold, Silver & Crystal}} (''[[PS180|The Last Battle XIV]]'' was moved to the end of Volume 14). They resumed production of the series with {{PAV|15}} in March 2013.

In July 2010, it was announced that the {{chap|Diamond & Pearl}} would be published concurrently with the {{chap|Gold, Silver & Crystal}} as a "second series" called '''Pokémon Adventures: Diamond and Pearl/Platinum''', with {{PAV|30}} published as the first volume of the second series. This second series releases one new volume triannually and began publication in February 2011. Continuing this trend, in August 2013 VIZ Media began to release the {{chap|HeartGold & SoulSilver}} as a separately numbered series, '''Pokémon Adventures: HeartGold & SoulSilver''', consisting of {{PAV|41}} and {{PAV|42}} as volumes one and two. Since the {{chap|HeartGold & SoulSilver}} is numbered separately from the {{chap|Black & White}}, the first four rounds of {{PAV|43}} ([[PS457]]-[[PS460]]) were moved to the end of {{PAV|42}} to keep the rounds organised by chapter.

Beginning in July 2011, VIZ Media began publishing the magazine version of the {{chap|Black & White}}. Since the rounds were not collected in volume format in Japan at the time of publication, they were released as [[List of Pokémon Black and White volumes|a series of mini-volumes]], titled '''Pokémon Black and White''' and billed as a "Pokémon Adventures special edition". Starting from July 2013, VIZ Media started releasing the regular volume versions as a series called '''Pokémon Adventures: Black & White''', allowing readers the choice between the magazine version and the volume version.

In March 2013, VIZ launched the {{tt|Perfect Square|Sticky Dot until July 2013}} app for the iPad. It allowed users to buy digital copies of children's manga and American comics. Pokémon Adventures is among those included on the app. So far, only Volumes 1-14 and Diamond and Pearl/Platinum Volumes 1-4 have been made available. These same volumes have also been released on the Kindle and Nook eBook stores as well.

In July 2018, Viz announced their plans to release the regular volumes for the entire series digitally on both their website's regular digital platform as well as Kindle, ComiXology, iBooks, Nook and GooglePlay with volumes 1-7 initially available, while the rest of storyline were released between August to December 2018 with both October and December having multiple saga releases<ref>[https://www.viz.com/blog/posts/pokemon-digital-manga-release-guide Pokémon Digital Manga Release Guide!]</ref> which was completed on December 25, 2018.

VIZ Media's translations of Pokémon Adventures are available in {{pmin|the United States}}, {{pmin|Canada}}, {{pmin|the United Kingdom}}, {{pmin|Ireland}}, {{pmin|Australia}}, and South Africa. They are also imported into other countries.

===Chuang Yi===
[[Chuang Yi]], a manga company based in {{pmin|Singapore}}, translated Pokémon Adventures into English since {{PAV|1}} in May 2000. The first seven volumes used [[VIZ Media]]'s translation, though after VIZ Media stopped their first edition in 2003 at {{PAV|7}}, Chuang Yi continued to translate the series on their own. As the first seven volumes were based on the flipped edition by VIZ Media, Chuang Yi continued to publish the series in a flipped format, lasting from {{PAV|8}} to {{PAV|40}}. Their final volume, {{PAV|41}}, was published in the original right-to-left reading format. Their translation of the manga stopped when Chuang Yi went under {{wp|liquidation|voluntary liquidation}}.

Pokémon Adventures has been translated into various versions in Chinese. The Traditional Chinese (Taiwan) version is translated by Ching Win Publishing Co., Ltd. (青文出版社有限公司) under the title {{tt|神奇寶貝特別篇|Pokémon Special}}, while the Traditional Chinese (Hong Kong) version is translated by its subsidiary, Hong Kong Ching Win Publishing Co., Ltd. (香港青文出版社有限公司) under the title {{tt|寵物小精靈特別篇|Pokémon Special}}.

The Simplified Chinese (Mainland China) version is translated by Jilin Publishing Group (吉林出版集团) under the title {{tt|精灵宝可梦特别篇|Pokémon Special}}. The series was formerly named {{tt|神奇宝贝特别篇|Pokémon Special}} prior to Volume 29, but was renamed due to trademark issues. Volume 1 - 29 was then republished under the new name afterwards. Initially, the series was translated by China Light Industry Press (轻工业出版社) and known as {{tt|宠物小精灵特别篇|Pokémon Special}} for seven volumes, before Jilin Publishing took over in 2005.

On July 25, 2014, {{pmin|Finland|Finnish}} publisher Pauna Media started publishing the {{chap|Red, Green & Blue}} and the {{chap|Yellow}} under the combined title ''Pokémon Adventures: Red, Blue & Green''. The seven volumes of these story arcs were initially scheduled to be released monthly. The Finnish version is based on and translated from the Japanese version. The names of moves, most characters, and Pokémon, however, will be in English by request of English licensors.

This means that {{adv|Blue}} and {{adv|Green}} follow the English naming as well instead of the original Japanese. Even though the translation is based on the Japanese version, the graphics are based on VIZ Media's second English version, with certain Finnish sound effects added. The edits made to the graphics remain in this version, despite the company's earlier statement on not censoring the series. Pauna Media has plans to release the entire series, although no new volumes have been released in years as of now.

This release, while continuing to use the "Pokémon: La Grande Aventure!" name, features an entirely new translation more faithful to the original Japanese version and consistent with Kurokawa's release of the {{chap|Black & White}}. In this edition, Red, Blue and Green are named Rouge, Bleu and Verte, which translate to the same colours in French. Blue and Green's names are switched, as in the English version (Bleu is the male character and Verte is the female character), likely due to the fact that there was no Green version released in France.

In 2015, upon completion of the {{chap|Black & White}}, Kurokawa has begun a French translation of the {{chap|X & Y}} in the same format. Due to the length of the series (52 volumes at the time of announcing the license) and due to different story arcs often starting and ending partway through volumes, Norma Editorial has opted for an omnibus format which groups rounds by chapter, including two simultaneous numbering systems (each volume is numbered based on its position in the entire series as well as numbered based on which chapter the book collects).

Norma Editorial's translation of Pokémon Adventures retains the original right-to-left reading format. New volumes are expected to be released monthly, beginning with Volume 1 on October 29, 2015. For their first releases, Norma Editorial will be alternating between the {{chap|Red, Green & Blue}} and the {{chap|Black & White}}.

Since most manga is serialized in magazines before being collected into books, I think it would be useful to have this information in the infobox (along with release date, when available).

For example, the [[ET03|third chapter]] of [[Dengeki Pikachu]] was originally published in the August 1997 issue of Bessatsu CoroCoro Comic Special, which was released on 30 June 1997.

While this information can be presented in the opening blurb, I think it's the kind of "at a glance"/"fast facts" information that would be better suited here.

==Plot==
The story begins in [[Pallet Town]]. [[Delia Ketchum|Ash's mother]] notices that the power in their house has gone out. {{OBP|Ash Ketchum|EToP|Ash}} hears some strange noises coming from inside the walls of the house. Ash investigates and finds a {{p|Pikachu}} gnawing on the wiring inside the house. Ash tries to remove the pest using a net, but Pikachu shocks him and starts running around the house. Finally, Ash uses a pair of rubber gloves to restrain the {{type|Electric}} {{OBP|Pokémon|species}}.

While an electrician arrives to fix the house, Ash escorts Pikachu back to the woods so that it won't get run over in town. On the way, {{Gary}} shows up and boasts to Ash, showing off his new [[Pokédex]] and gloating that he got his [[Pokémon Trainer's License]]. Ash freaks out, and Gary explains that he's leaving on a Pokémon journey the very next week. Ash doubts that Gary can make it as a professional Trainer while Gary angrily insists that he can, and then he gloats that Trainers on their quest are exempt from [[Pokémon academy|school]]. Gary teases Ash by reminding him that at last year's ''Pokémon Super Ball Tournament'', Ash bragged about how he would become a [[Pokémon Master]]. Ash downplays this, saying that he just got carried away, but Gary chides Ash for not wanting to be like the other kids who get their license and start training Pokémon as soon as they can.

Furious, Ash leaves Pikachu tied by its collar to his mailbox and runs into town to get his Pokémon license. He's stopped by Gary's sister, May. May warns Ash that the life of a Trainer is really hard and perilous, but a blushing Ash insists that it will be easy for him. Ash runs off to get his license as May giggles at his enthusiasm.

After taking a class and passing an exam, Ash gets his license. One week later, Ash is on his journey, leading Pikachu on a leash through the outdoors.

Ash sees a wild {{p|Pidgey}} and orders Pikachu to attack, only to find out that Pikachu has left. Ash gets blasted by a {{m|Sand Attack}} while Pikachu scurried away into [[Viridian City]]. Ash tracks down his wayward Pokémon, but the little yellow mouse eludes Ash in front of a crowd of people and knocks him into the sewer. Ash babbles that since he heard Pikachu are one of the hardest Pokémon to tame, he exclaims that he already has Gary beat. Ash finally catches Pikachu by luring it closer with some food, only to get blasted by a {{m|Thunder Shock}}.

Finally, two policewomen come to verify that Ash has a license, thinking that Ash was showing off his Pokémon. One of the policewomen notes that since Ash chose a Pikachu over the standard beginning Pokémon, {{p|Charmander}}, he must be some sort of prodigy.

Gary comes over and taunts Ash. He claims that Pikachu may be rare in Viridian, but they're all around Pallet Town and Ash just threw a rope over one and dragged it along with him. Ash boasts that none of Gary's Pokémon could hold a candle to his Pikachu and Pikachu shocks Ash yet again. Gary claims that Trainers are judged by the number of Pokémon they catch and taunts Ash again for still only having one while he has six. Gary then rides away on a hovering motorcycle while cackling.

Later that night, Ash tries to put Pikachu into a Poké Ball. His Pokédex informs him that several Pokémon types dislike Poké Balls, and Ash relents, but gets shocked again anyways. A girl on a bike notices the light show and comes over to hug the cute Pikachu. The girl is disappointed that she couldn't have Pikachu for herself as her {{type|Water}} Pokémon wouldn't get along with it.

The girl introduces herself as [[Misty]], and Ash asks if she's a professional Trainer. Misty giggles and says that every year, 1000 people attempt to become professional Pokémon Trainers, but only 20% pass the test to become professionals. And after that, only 5% stay active in the League for more than six years. Misty then says that Ash doesn't look like he'll be able to make it and leaves behind a snarling Ash - who notices that Pikachu has run away yet again.

Out in the grass, Pikachu is happily running along by itself with it gets startled by a {{p|Spearow}} and knocks it out. Pikachu is relieved until a whole flock of Spearow erupt from the bushes and begin to pursue it. Ash finds Pikachu and checks its health with his Pokédex after chasing away the Spearow with a stick. Noting that Pikachu is in critical condition, he begins to rush it to a [[Pokémon Center]] emergency room.

Just then, the looming shadow of a Fearow swoops down and tries to attack Ash. Ash flees until he notices Misty and her bike near a river. Ash hops on the bike and speeds away as rain begins to fall. Fearow dives into a {{m|Drill Peck}} attack that only Pikachu notices. The little mouse leaps up behind Ash and attacks with a huge bolt of electricity, paralyzing it and frying the bike. A stunned Ash throws out a Poké Ball and makes his first capture. He is excited until he notices Pikachu has passed out.

At the Pokémon Center, a healthy Pikachu embraces Ash, and Ash removes the leash. He pets the happy Pikachu and notes that he needs to give it a name. Just then, a furious Misty bursts in holding the charred remains of her bike. Ash and Pikachu happily scramble out of the Pokémon Center and away from the enraged girl.

When this chapter was [[Electric Tale of Pikachu issue 1|originally published]] as part of a [[List of Electric Tale of Pikachu monthly issues|monthly comic series]] by [[VIZ Media]], few changes were made to the original artwork. [[Daisy Oak|May Oak]] was still depicted with large breasts, and {{an|Misty}}'s top revealed some cleavage. When the chapter was published in [[Electric Tale of Pikachu volume 1|a collected volume]], however, May's breasts were redrawn to be much smaller and Misty's top was recolored to a black one which does not reveal any cleavage. Misty's introductory panel in the collected volume misses this change, however, and still shows her original white top.

These edits are also present in [[Chuang Yi]]'s English publication, the {{pmin|Brazil}}ian translation, and the {{pmin|Canada|Canadian French}} translation, as these were based on VIZ Media's version.

'''CoroCoro Comics''' (Japanese: '''コロコロコミック''' ''CoroCoro Comics'') is a Japanese magazine published by [[Shogakukan]]. The name comes from the {{wp|Japanese sound symbolism|Japanese phenomime}} ''korokoro'', meaning a small, fat, spherical thing, because kids supposedly like them.

CoroCoro regularly promotes toys and video games related to manga franchises, releasing stories and articles featuring them. Pokémon owes its big success in Japan to this in a way; [[Pokémon Blue Version (Japanese)|Pocket Monsters Blue]] was sold exclusively through the magazine at first. This in turn helped CoroCoro's sales as well. Throughout its history, CoroCoro has held many [[illustration contests]] for the Pokémon Trading Card Game.

The magazine has two bi-monthly sisters: ''Bessatsu CoroCoro'' and ''CoroCoro Ichiban!''.

==History==
The magazine was launched in 1977, aiming at young elementary-school age boys, younger than the age for {{wp|shōnen}} readers, which is about teenager age, but then became one of the most popular magazines in Japan. CoroCoro is now currently a monthly manga magazine, along with its three sister publications, ''Bessatsu CoroCoro'' and ''CoroCoro Ichiban!'', which are only released every two months; and ''CoroCoro G'', which is released twice a year. It is known as a source for Pokémon news, as many announcements pertaining to both the {{pkmn|anime}} and {{pkmn|games}} come to fans by way of the magazine. '''The Electric Tale of Pikachu''' (Japanese: '''ポケットモンスター・電撃ピカチュウ''' ''Pocket Monsters: Dengeki Pikachu'') is a four-volume [[Pokémon manga]] series made by [[Toshihiro Ono]], originally serialized in [[CoroCoro|Bessatsu CoroCoro Comic Special]]. It is loosely based on the [[Pokémon anime]].

The manga follows the overall plot of the [[S01|Pokémon: Indigo League]] and [[S02|Pokémon: Adventures in the Orange Islands]] seasons of the anime. However, the story is not very sequential, as only a few select anime episodes were picked to be adapted into manga form. The manga concludes with Ash's victory in the [[Orange League]].

The Pokémon illustrations in this manga are not based on the official artwork by [[Ken Sugimori]], and so many appear to be more/less stylized in comparison.

==Differences between the anime and the manga==
*The characters are the same as in the anime, although characters differ between versions in significant ways. {{OBP|Ash Ketchum|EToP|Ash}} does a significant amount of traveling on his own, although {{an|Misty}} and {{an|Brock}} appear frequently as traveling companions.
*Many main and recurring characters own Pokémon that they do not own in the anime, such as [[Ash's Fearow]].
*Occasionally, a story from the anime will be adapted to the manga but will be altered slightly. For example, in ''[[ET02|Play Misty For Me]]'', Ash battles Misty for the {{badge|Cascade}} just like in the anime; however, she challenges him to retrieve his {{AP|hat}} from her rather than a traditional battle.
*[[Sabrina]] is shown as a kind, caring person, unlike in other depictions where she is shown as cold and indifferent to others.
*Unlike in the anime, [[Gary Oak]] is shown to have a sister named [[Daisy Oak|May Oak]].
*[[Jessie]] and [[James]] are canonically confirmed as [[RocketShipping|a couple]] in this manga: they are shown to be married at the end of volume four.

The Electric Tale of Pikachu has been released in English by both [[VIZ Media]] and [[Chuang Yi]].

===VIZ Media===
The Electric Tale of Pikachu was the first Pokémon manga to be translated officially into English, making its debut in {{DL|Pokémon manga samplers|VIZ Video samplers|sampler editions}} included with [[List of English language Indigo League home video releases (Region 1)|home video releases]] of the Pokémon anime and subsequently released in full as sixteen [[List of Electric Tale of Pikachu monthly issues|monthly issues]]. These sixteen monthly issues were treated as four separate series, each consisting of four issues, and ran from November 1998 through February 2000. When the issues were collected for their graphic novels, each volume was named for their four-issue arc: ''The Electric Tale of Pikachu'', ''Pikachu Shocks Back'', ''Electric Pikachu Boogaloo'' and ''Surf's Up, Pikachu''. The VIZ graphic novels do not mention any volume numbers or relation to each other, as each volume is titled as though it is a separate series.

The manga was heavily promoted by VIZ Media and was featured in several commercial advertisements. Aside from the promotional home video samplers, a collection was also released featuring the first two chapters entitled [[The Electric Tale of Pikachu Special Signature Edition Red Version|the Special Signature Edition Red Version]]. This special edition was included with a [[Pokémon Video Suitcase]] promotional set. A second edition, the Special Signature Edition Blue Version, which contains the second two chapters of the same series, was included with a second Pokémon Video Suitcase set.

===Chuang Yi===
The Electric Tale of Pikachu was also released by [[Chuang Yi]] in their publishing region. Since the translations were licensed from VIZ Media's version, they contain all of the same edits. Chuang Yi's volumes do not have individual titles, though they also use the same English title ''The Electric Tale of Pikachu''.

Chuang Yi's version of {{Vol|Electric Tale of Pikachu|2}}, while based on VIZ Media's translation, restored the final two pages of ''[[ET06|To Evolve or Not to Evolve, That Is the Question!]]'' which were omitted from VIZ Media's version. As VIZ Media chose to omit the pages originally, these pages are the only two of the manga which Chuang Yi translated themselves.

==International versions==
In {{pmin|Brazil}}, the first volume of this series was released by Conrad Editora in four monthly issues. These are direct translations of VIZ Media's monthly issues and therefore contain all of VIZ Media's edits.

In {{pmin|Canada}}, a French edition titled ''{{tt|L'aventure électrique de Pikachu|The electric adventure of Pikachu}}'' was published by '''Imavision Distribution''', the same company that released the Pokémon anime on VHS and DVD in French-speaking regions of Canada. The French version includes the first four monthly issues and are directly based on [[VIZ Media]]'s English version, including edits. The order of the issues for [[ET02]] and [[ET03]] is reversed in the French publication as well, just like the English.

In the {{pmin|Greater China}} region, the manga has been translated to Mandarin by Da Ran as {{tt|電擊皮卡丘|Electric Shock Pikachu}} in Taiwan and to Cantonese as {{tt|電擊比卡超|Electric Shock Pikachu}}.

There was also a translation in {{pmin|Indonesia}}n, renamed as ''{{tt|Kisah Pikachu yang Menggetarkan|Shocking Tale of Pikachu}}''.

In {{pmin|South Korea}}, all four volumes were released titled {{tt|포켓몬스터 전격피카츄|Pokémon Electric Pikachu}}, published by 대원씨아이 ''{{wp|Daewon C.I.}}''. The Korean versions are translations based off the original Japanese version published by [[Shogakukan]].

==Controversy and censorship==

This manga is perhaps the most controversial Pokémon manga ever published, due almost entirely to the fact that the original Japanese version of the manga series had a lot of sexual content, including women such as {{an|Misty}}, [[Jessie]] and [[the Sensational Sisters]] given oversized busts, often accompanied by skimpy clothing or swimwear. In order to make the series marketable to younger English-speaking readers, much of this was censored during [[VIZ Media]]'s translations and all of the sexual content was taken out, leading to a "cleaner" version of the manga for international readers. The Japanese volumes of the manga were also slightly censored from the original versions published in CoroCoro. According to Toshihiro Ono, these edits were done by himself.

One scene in particular that was heavily edited was when {{OBP|Ash Ketchum|EToP|Ash}} battles Misty for the {{badge|Cascade}} in ''[[ET02|Play Misty For Me]]''. In the original, Misty wears a very revealing swimsuit, which is completely redrawn as a wetsuit in the English version.

There was one scene that was removed altogether from the English version. It is the original ending of ''[[ET06|To Evolve or Not to Evolve, That Is the Question!]]''. This scene was set in a hot spring, and it pictured a naked {{an|Misty}} (with {{AP|Pikachu}}) relaxing and washing herself, making a comment about how her chest should evolve, too. All of a sudden, {{OBP|Ash Ketchum|EToP|Ash}}, [[Mikey]] and {{an|Brock}} are seen sitting in another hot spring, and they see Misty washing herself. Misty, noticing their presence, is extremely embarrassed and feels very violated; and she runs away in anger. This scene was likely deleted due to excessive nudity and the adult nature of the scene. This scene, however, is not removed from Chuang Yi's version.
