Qwilfish (Japanese: ハリーセン Harysen) is a dual-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

In Hisui, Qwilfish has a dual-type regional form, Hisuian Qwilfish. Hisuian Qwilfish evolves into Overqwil after using Strong Style Barb Barrage 20 times. In the modern day, Hisuian Qwilfish can be found in Blueberry Academy's Terarium.

Johtonian Qwilfish is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

(Specifics may differ in past games. Refer to Game data→Evolution data for these details.)

Biology
Qwilfish is a List of Pokémon by habitat fish Pokémon with a spherical body and a flat, paddle-shaped tail. The upper half of its body is dark teal and the lower half is light greenish-yellow. Its tail is tall and thin with a dark teal outline, light greenish-yellow inside, and two dark teal dots in the center that resemble the katakana character ハ Ha. Its eyes are even with its body and are always seen slanted angrily. Below its eyes are its puffy pink lips. All around its body are sharp, conical spikes, which evolved from scales over time.

In order to attack, Qwilfish drinks over 2.6 gallons (10 litres) of water to inflate its body. It then uses the water pressure to shoot poisonous quills at its foe, which can cause fainting. Qwilfish is briefly left defenseless shortly after firing its quills; this is believed by some expert fishers to be the opportune moment to catch this Pokémon. Due to its round body, Qwilfish is not a great swimmer, and when filled with water it is even harder for it to swim. When Qwilfish faces a larger opponent, it will inflate its body to match its size as close as it can. If it is startled while inflated, it will spit out all its water, propelling itself away.

Qwilfish, Hisuian Qwilfish, and the latter's evolved form, Overqwil, are the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Barb Barrage.
left clear

Forms
Qwilfish has a regional form: Hisuian Qwilfish.

In Hisui, its upper half is black, while its lower half is pale yellow. Its body is covered in spikes; the spikes on its upper body have dark purple tips, except for the two spikes on its forehead, which are also smaller in size. Hisuian Qwilfish can spray poison from these spines. There are crescent purple lines underneath Hisuian Qwilfish's eyes, and its lips are also colored purple. Its flat tail has a black outline with a light yellow inside, and a black pattern that resembles the lowercase letter "q".

Hisuian Qwilfish is despised by the fishermen of the Hisui region, due to its poison wreaking havoc in the seas it lives in. Its poisonous spikes are thicker and shorter than Qwilfish from other regions. Getting jabbed by Hisuian Qwilfish's poison will make a person feel pain and misery for three days and three nights. This form of Qwilfish absorbs poison from the food it consumes such as toxic minerals. The purple coloration on its body serves as evidence of its potent poison. In the present day, Hisuian Qwilfish and its Evolution are known to be found offshore in cold parts of the world and in Blueberry Academy, located somewhere in Unova's ocean, specifically in the Terarium's Polar Biome. It has also been seen inside Hyperspace Lumiose.

Evolution
Hisuian Qwilfish evolves into Overqwil. Johtonian Qwilfish cannot evolve.

Trivia
* Qwilfish shares its category with Igglybuff, Jigglypuff, Wigglytuff, and Drifloon. They are all known as the Balloon Pokémon.
* Qwilfish can be seen as a parallel to Remoraid. Both of them are Water Generation II Pokémon. Qwilfish is exclusive to FireRed and LeafGreen, while Remoraid is exclusive to FireRed and LeafGreen, with both Pokémon found in the same locations in their respective versions, and both being swarm Pokémon in Generation II and HeartGold and SoulSilver.
* A of an unused Pokémon depicts a Pokémon with the same Pokédex number as Qwilfish.
* Qwilfish and Overqwil are the only Poison List of Pokémon by shape, and the only Poison-type Pokémon in the Water 2.
* According to several Team Plasma Grunts, Hugh's hairstyle resembles a Qwilfish.
* Hisuian Qwilfish and its evolved form were first hinted in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl before their official reveal in Legends: Arceus, where they were mentioned in a book in the Canalave Library where Overqwil is referred to as "a Qwilfish with huge spikes".
* Hisuian Qwilfish is the first Hisuian form that can be caught outside of Hisui (excluding Poké Portal News event Tera Raid Battles).
** Hisuian Qwilfish and Galarian Slowpoke are the only Regional forms that can be caught in all Generation IX games (excluding Poké Portal News event Mass outbreaks).
* Qwilfish is the only Pokémon with a name beginning with the letter "Q" that is not followed by a "U" like most words in the English language.
**It is also one of only two Pokémon to have a "Q" in its name that is not followed by a "U", the other being its Hisuian evolved form Overqwil.
* Hisuian Qwilfish and its evolved form are the only dual-type Pokémon to have Dark as their primary type instead of their secondary type.
* The Pokémon Gold and Silver Spaceworld '97 demo has an early design of Qwilfish named プクー Pukū, whose name may be a corruption of 河豚 fugu (pufferfish). It was a pure Water type and would evolve into シビレフグ Shibirefugu at level 18.
Spr 2d 171.png|Sprite of Shibirefugu from 1997 demo
</gallery>

Origin
Qwilfish seems to be based on Tetraodontidae or porcupinefish, which inflate their bodies when threatened and are covered in spines. Many species are incredibly toxic when ingested, which explains Qwilfish's Poison type. However, its ability to directly inject venom through its spines is similar to a lionfish. It is also reminiscent of a naval mine due to its round body and ability to explode.

Hisuian Qwilfish's Dark type and poisonous diet may be based on the illegalisation of the fugu dish due to its toxicity. The law was put in place a few times in Japanese history, including the 1800s (which Legends: Arceus appears to be based on), but the illegal fugu market continued and thrived for so long that the governing shogunate became incapable of enforcing the law. Hisuian Qwilfish and Overqwil appear to be rarer in recent times, which could be a reference to porcupinefish being threatened due to overfishing for the fugu dish.

Name origin
Qwilfish may be a combination of quill (the noun, meaning porcupine or hedgehog spikes, or the verb, meaning to pierce with quills) and fish.

Harysen may be derived from 針千本 harisenbon (porcupinefish). The Japanese name for porcupinefish, 針千本 (harisenbon), can be interpreted literally as "one thousand sewing needles".
Overqwil (Japanese: ハリーマン Haryman) is a dual-type Pokémon introduced during Generation VIII, in Legends: Arceus.

It evolves from Hisuian Qwilfish after using Strong Style Barb Barrage 20 times.

(Specifics may differ in past games. Refer to Game data→Evolution data for these details.)

Biology
Overqwil is a large, spherical fish Pokémon that resides in the sea. All over its body are overgrown conical spikes whose colors correspond to those on Overqwil's body. Its top half is black while its bottom half is light yellow; the two halves meet in the middle and form a wave pattern. The spikes on the top half of its body have parts of purple at their tips, and two very long spikes at the top and bottom of its body jut out in a straight direction. Above its eyes and around part of the top half of its body, Overqwil has circular purple dots. Its lips also have a purple coloration and appear puffy, and its small light-yellow eyes have purple pupils and are always fixated on an annoyed expression. In between its eyes are two pairs of spikes, the outer ones being longer and resembling eyebrows. Its large tail appears flat with a black outline and a purple inside, which also has a pattern that resembles the letter "Q."

Overqwil has a very aggressive personality to match its short temper, which has given it the nickname "sea fiend." Its diet consists of poison. Overqwil's poisonous spikes react automatically to targets, even while asleep. The barbed spikes will stab any moving thing that approaches Overqwil, and have been known to adhere tightly to their target. It has been recently seen along with its pre-Evolution offshore in cold parts of the world, specifically in the Terarium's Polar Biome. It has also been seen inside Hyperspace Lumiose.

Overqwil and its pre-evolved form, Hisuian Qwilfish, are the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Barb Barrage.

Evolution
Overqwil evolves from Hisuian Qwilfish.
In the TCG
Overqwil (TCG)

Trivia
* Overqwil was first hinted at in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl before its official reveal in Legends: Arceus, being alluded to in a book in the Canalave Library, where it is referred to as "a Qwilfish with huge spikes".
* Overqwil and Qwilfish are the only Poison List of Pokémon by shape and the only Poison-type Pokémon in the Water 2.
* In Generation IX, prior to the Version 2.0.1 update of Scarlet and Violet, Overqwil was unable to learn Water Pulse, Acid Spray, Hex, and Swift via TM, while its pre-evolved form could.
* Overqwil is one of only two Pokémon to have a "Q" in its name that is not followed by a "U" (unlike most words in the English language with a "Q" in it) with the other being its pre-Evolution Qwilfish.
* Overqwil and its pre-evolved form are the only dual-type Pokémon to have Dark as their primary type instead of their secondary type.

Origin
Overqwil appears to be based on Tetraodontidae or porcupinefish, which are covered in spines and are poisonous to eat. Its Dark typing and poisonous diet may be based on the illegalisation of the fugu dish due to its toxicity.

Its oversized spikes along with their ability to inject poison may also be inspired by other venomous marine animals such as lionfish or sea urchins. Overqwil and its pre-Evolution's notoriety amongst fishermen may be a reference to the significant threat that lionfish pose as an invasive species in the Atlantic Ocean, another potential inspiration for Overqwil's Dark type.

Overqwil's physical appearance and ability to learn Self-Destruct (and Qwilfish's ability to learn Explosion in many generations) are reminiscent of a naval mine. It also resembles a Morning star (weapon) or the spiked end of a Flail (weapon). Based on its Japanese category, it may also be partly inspired by the kenzan (剣山, lit. "sword mountain"), a device consisting of a plate with numerous needles or spikes on it, used to fix flowers in place for the art of ikebana (flower arranging).

Name origin
Overqwil may be a combination of overkill and Qwilfish.

Haryman may be derived from ハリーセン Harysen (Qwilfish) or 針千本 (porcupinefish), with the 千 sen (thousand) part replaced with 万 man (ten thousand or myriad). The Japanese name for porcupinefish, 針千本 (harisenbon), can be interpreted literally as "one thousand sewing needles". The last character in 針千本 harisenbon, 本, is a counter for slender objects. The Japanese name for Overwqil can be interpreted literally as "ten thousand sewing needles".
