Missingno. (Japanese: けつばん Ketsuban) is a dual-type glitch Pokémon in Red and Blue, and a dual-type glitch Pokémon in Yellow. Due to the ease of which it can be found, it is one of the best-known glitch Pokémon.

In later generations, other glitch Pokémon are referred to as "a Missingno.", despite there being little relation to the one found in Red and Blue or Yellow.

Missingno.'s cry is the game's equivalent of a "blank" cry: a Nidoran♂'s voice with a pitch of 0 and no echo. However, a few Missingno. have different cries.

If Missingno.'s Pokédex data is viewed, it will consist of a very long string of glitchy sounds, much like .4 or h POKé's entries. However, unlike their entries, Missingno.'s does not lock up the game.

Forms
Normal form
Missingno. normal form has a sprite that is a strange block of glitched pixels in a backward-L shape. Due to the larger number of characters that can be used to make it appear, it is the most common form. Normal form is exclusive to .
* This form appears through the old man glitch if the character in the third, fifth, or seventh slot of the player's name is the end-name marker, G, H, J, M, S, T, :, ], a, b, c, m, o, p, or v.
* This form appears through the Mew glitch with a special stat of 31, 32, 50, 52, 56, 61, 62, 63, 67, 68, 69, 79, 80, 81, 86, 87, 94, 95, 115, 121, 122, 127, 134, 135, 137, 140, 146, 156, 159, 160, 161, 162, 172, 174, 175 or 181.

Kabutops fossil form
Missingno. Kabutops fossil form uses the sprite of the Kabutops fossil found in the Pewter Museum of Science.
* This form appears through the old man glitch if w is the character in the third, fifth, or seventh slot of the player's chosen name.
* This form appears through the Mew glitch with a special stat of 182.

Aerodactyl fossil form
Missingno. Aerodactyl fossil form uses the sprite of the Aerodactyl fossil found in the Pewter Museum of Science.
* This form appears through the old man glitch if x is the character in the third, fifth, or seventh slot of the player's chosen name.
* This form appears through the Mew glitch with a special stat of 183.

Ghost form
Missingno. Ghost form uses the sprite of the Ghost found in Pokémon Tower if the player does not have the Silph Scope.
* This form appears through the old man glitch if y is the character in the third, fifth, or seventh slot of the player's chosen name.
* This form appears through the Mew glitch with a special stat of 184.

Yellow form
Missingno. Yellow form is , whereas Missingno. forms in are . It uses the palette of Pikachu, and so appears as a yellow and red glitched box. It also causes glitches that Missingno. in did not. If caught, it will cause graphical glitches, possibly rendering the player invisible and making duplicates of the player and all other on-screen characters walk in random locations on the screen. Yellow form is exclusive to Yellow.
* This form does not appear through the old man glitch, as the old man glitch was removed in Yellow.
* This form appears through the Mew glitch with a special stat of 31, 32, 61, 62, 63, 67, 68, 69 or 86.

Glitches caused
Missingno.'s appearance in-battle allows the item duplication glitch, which increases the number of items in the 6th bag slot by 255 if caught, or 128 if not caught.

Encountering Missingno. has been known to interfere with the save game data in various ways, such as adversely affecting the Hall of Fame saved data and (if its stats are viewed) messing with some graphics until the stats of a normal Pokémon are viewed. When a Trainer battles with Missingno. in their party, both the Trainer sprite and their Pokémon's sprites will be scrambled, and all other sprites will be reversed. Viewing the stats screen of a non-glitch Pokémon will remove the effects.

Trading Missingno.
Missingno. can be traded from Red and Blue into Yellow, but cannot be traded forward through the Time Capsule into Gold. In Yellow, Missingno. levels down to level 1 if it gains any experience, and cannot grow any higher. The only way to use a Missingno. at a different level in battle is to use a link cable to battle between two games.

In the trade center, Missingno., due to its index number, appears as many different Generation II Pokémon from the perspective of Gold, most commonly Tyrogue (due to the common name of ASH in Generation I). For a full list of the Generation II Pokémon Missingno. can appear as, see List of Pokémon by index number (Generation I). If the player tries to trade Missingno., a message will appear stating "Your <name> appears abnormal." and the trade will automatically be cancelled. Rarely, if a Missingno. is successfully traded, it will become the Pokémon it was said to be, and act normally (though it will retain any and all moves it had as a Missingno.). At this point, it only may be traded back into the Generation I game while the player is still in the Time Capsule (where it will again become a Missingno.), as if the player leaves, the Generation II game will detect it as a Generation II Pokémon and not allow the player to enter the Time Capsule.

In Pokémon Stadium
When viewed in Pokémon Stadium, Missingno. will appear as a substitute doll, while in Pokémon Stadium 2, Missingno. will show up as a Ditto, and if the game is saved via Stadium 2, will then become a Ditto permanently. Capturing Missingno. in the Game Boy Tower in Pokémon Stadium may cause the cartridge to become unable to be played with Pokémon Stadium.

Nintendo on Missingno.
Nintendo has an official description of Missingno. listed in their Customer Service troubleshooting section:

<blockquote>"MissingNO is a programming quirk, and not a real part of the game. When you get this, your game can perform strangely, and the graphics will often become scrambled. The MissingNO Pokémon is most often found after you perform the Fight Safari Zone Pokémon trick.

To fix the scrambled graphics, try releasing the MissingNo Pokémon. If the problem persists, the only solution is to re-start your game. This means erasing your current game and starting a brand new one." </blockquote>

Nintendo was incorrect on the method for fixing graphical issues; releasing Missingno. does not fix the graphics. The actual way to fix these issues is to view the Pokédex data or stat page of a Hybrid glitch Pokémon or official Pokémon.
Trivia
* If counted among normal Pokémon, the typical 'normal form' Missingno. have the highest Attack base stat of all valid Pokémon in Red and Blue. This is the ninth highest of all Pokémon, not including other glitch Pokémon as of Generation IV.
** Likewise, the 'normal form' Missingno. have the lowest Defense base stat of any Pokémon, again not including other glitch Pokémon and the third lowest Speed base stat in Red and Blue.
*** The Yellow normal form Missingno. have 0 base speed. This ties with various Generation I glitch Pokémon for the lowest base Speed stat.
* Missingno. is much heavier than any regular Pokémon. Missingno. is about four times heavier than 'M. Missingno. is about half the weight of h POKé, the heaviest known Pokémon of any kind.
* Missingno.'s height is 10'0". 'M is more than twice as tall as Missingno. This makes Missingno. the 19th tallest Pokémon when compared to non-glitch Pokémon.
* In its normal form, it has the same learnset as 'M, except that 'M cannot learn Substitute via TM50.
* In 2010, Missingno. was entered into GameFAQs' 8th annual Character Battle. It advanced to the third round by defeating Crono and Yoshi, but later lost to Sephiroth (Final Fantasy).
* Normal form Missingno.'s stats in Red and Blue are actually determined by the parties of several Bikers, read as base stats.
*Missingno.'s fame has extended to a common fan meme where it is describe as a sort of pokemon-like eldrich horror able to distort reality or induce madness in others.

Name origin
Missingno.'s English and Japanese names are both derived from "missing number".

James (Japanese: コジロウ Kojirō) is one half of of the Team Rocket duo that follows around Ash Ketchum and friends in the anime, usually trying to steal Ash's Pikachu, but always failing. His voice actors are 三木眞一郎 Shin'ichirō Miki in Japanese and Ted Lewis ( dub, EP002-EP009), Eric Stuart ( dub, EP010-AG145) and Billy Beach (PUSA dub, AG146-present) in English. Internationally, he is played by Márcio Araújo in Brazilian Portuguese, Peter Michael (Kanto and Orange Islands, Movies 1, 2, 3 and 4) and Rui Quintas(from Johto to Present) in European Portuguese, and José Antionio Macías in Latin-American Spanish.

James is mostly a comedic parody of bishounen characters; the english dub in particular tends to give him a melodramatic and even campy tone. He is somewhat famous for carrying a rose, though in more recent episodes he does not display it often. Mostly, his rose is displayed in the Team Rocket motto.

In the anime
Character
The only child of millionaires, James was forced to endure formal society. At a young age, he was forcefully engaged to a girl of whom he was terrified, Jessiebelle, all because his parents wanted to have a wealthy daughter-in-law. Thus, he ran away from home, leaving behind his beloved pet Growlie. He attempted to enroll in Pokémon Tech, a trainer's school, but, along with his new friend Jessie, flunked out. Then, with Jessie, he joined the Sunny Town bicycle gang, where he was popular for being the only gang member to have to use training wheels (nicknamed "Trainer Jim"). Eventually James, Jessie, and the bike gang went their separate ways.

Due to conflicts in canon between Kanto and Johto episodes and the special episode Training Daze, what happened between James and Jessie after the bike gang is unknown. What is known, as shown in the special episode, is that they joined Team Rocket separately and were on initially unfriendly terms after being grouped with MTR. However, they quickly made up and the rest is history.

Since he is proficient in several activities, including Pokémon haiku and PokéRinger, it is possible that he developed his skills during his temporary separation from Jessie, but this is not known for sure.

In the episode Holy Matrimony!, James returned to his home as a result of a trap by his parents, who pretended to be dead. He was reunited with his old pet Growlie and managed to avoid marrying Jessiebelle. Growlie stayed behind when James returned to Jessie and Meowth.

James has a tendency to be swindled by a Magikarp Salesman, who has on many occasions tricked him into buying a Magikarp or other useless Pokémon for large sums of money.

James also has a tendency to cross-dress, but has not done it since Pros and Con Artists. He does, however, dress up like famous celebrities as well, such as Professor Oak, Juan, and Norman.

James seems to have a fondness for carnivorous Grass Pokémon, owning both a Weepinbell and a Carnivine. It is not shown how he captures either of these Pokémon, since he has owned them for a long period of time before their first appearances. He did, however, capture a Cacnea early in Hoenn, furthering his seeming preference for Grass-types.

James loves, and has an impressive collection of, rare bottle caps. In the episode All That Glitters! it is revealed that he has "drunk enough soda pop to float an aircraft carrier".

For unknown reasons, he, Jessie and Meowth mostly use hot air balloons instead of faster ways of transportation. However in newer episodes the balloon is shown with 'jets' attached to explain how they get from one place to another faster than walking

Pokémon
James was a character in Toshihiro Ono's manga, The Electric Tale of Pikachu, which was based loosely on the anime.
Both Jessie and James appear in Yellow as in-game bosses. They first attack the main character in Mt. Moon, while trying to take one of the rare fossils uncovered there.

Later, in Celadon City's Rocket Game Corner, Jessie and James guard Giovanni's room in the Team Rocket base. During that time, as the player runs into them, they are eager for revenge after the main character busted up their plans at Mt. Moon.

They hold Mr. Fuji hostage at Pokémon Tower. They attack the main character on the seventh floor.

Finally, at Silph Co. in Saffron City, Jessie and James make their final appearance, once again trying to stall the main character from reaching their Boss.

Unlike in the anime, Jessie and James do not follow the main character around and come up with their usual evil plans to capture Pikachu.

* Level 31 Meowth

Pokémon Puzzle League
Along with many other anime characters, both Jessie and James appeared in Pokémon Puzzle League.

In the TCG
Jessie and James appear on both versions of the card Team Rocket, which originally released in the Team Rocket set; it was re-released with different artwork in EX Team Rocket Returns. In that expansion, there was also a preconstructed Theme Deck based on James.

It is rumored that James may also be on the Gym Challenge set card Rocket's Secret Experiment, as there is a Rocket in the background, seen only from the back, who has his hairstyle, but what he may be doing in the lab is left to the imagination.

Trivia
*Both Jessie and James have used a Charizard at separate times (Jessie having used two). None of the three remained in their care, however.
*James at times uses the name Jameson.
*James hasn't evolved any of his Pokémon since Here's Lookin' at You, Elekid!.
*He is the only main character to, after being given his first Pokémon, at one point not have any Pokémon on hand. This was in A Poached Ego! during the brief moment after he released James and before he caught James.
*James is the only main character to have one Pokémon and release/give it away, then get another Pokémon of the same species.
*James and MTR are the only main characters to have their voice actors replaced during the run of the show, then again when Pokémon USA took over.
*James is, as of the most recent Japanese episode, the only Trainer on the main cast who has not yet owned a Generation II Pokémon during the Diamond & Pearl series.
** In fact, the only Generation II Pokémon James ever had was a Hoppip, though it flew away before he could put it in a Poké Ball.
*In the dub, both of James's Generation III Pokémon were given away in the second episode of a season which was recorded at a new studio from the prior. James was left in the care of James's relatives in the second episode of Battle Frontier (Dubbed at TAJ), while James was given to Gardenia in the the second episode of season 11 (Dubbed at DuArt).
*It is interesting to note that James is the only main character who never battled any of his Pokémon before capturing them.

Name origin
James's English name is taken from Jesse James, an American outlaw. His Japanese name, Kojiro, is taken from 佐々木小次郎 Sasaki Kojirō, a prominent Japanese swordsman most famous for being killed by his rival, 宮本武蔵 Miyamoto Musashi, the namesake of Jessie. Also, 二郎 Jirō is a name meaning "second son," while 三郎 Saburō means "third son." Kojiro takes advantage of Jirō, while the Japanese name of Butch, Kosaburo, takes advantage of Saburō.

He is based on a combination of the character of Leonardo Medici Bundle from the anime Sengoku Majin GoShogun and 弁天小僧菊之介 Sarasvati boy Kikunosuke from the kabuki 『白波五人男』 The Five Scoundrels of White Waves.

A novelty Pokémon, also referred to as an gimmick Pokémon, is a term for a Pokémon species with either no or few evolutions, little use in battle, and/or a limited movepool. Such Pokémon usually posses some novel quality about them that makes them unique or interesting but lack the ability to be readily shaped up for battle, causing them to be underused or overlooked. Although nearly all Pokémon can be used in a battle effectively, Novelty Pokémon appear to be more added to flesh out the Pokémon world than to be actually used or as fodder for potential evolutions later.

Many of these Pokémon became viable participants in Pokémon Contests after they were introduced in Generation III.

List of novelty Pokémon
* With many other Pokémon sharing its type and most of its abilities, Farfetch'd was a novelty Pokémon in the first generation due to the fact it was rare and could only be acquired by trading.
* Ditto only has one move&mdash; Transform which lets it copy the appearance, types, and moves of its opponents. It is not very useful in battle, but invaluable in breeding.
* Capable of learning only one move, Unown's main purpose in the games is that it has 28 forms, causing collecting them all to be its own sidequest.
* Delibird is capable of only naturally learning a single move. However, unlike Unown, it can learn more via TMs and being bred. It is largely still considered a novelty Pokémon, though.
* Smeargle learns only one move repeatedly, but this move has the ability to permanently duplicate the moves of other Pokémon. Its stats and rarity mean it is not used as frequently as it could be though but this capability makes it very useful in breeding as well.
* Plusle and Minun were created to showcase the double battle addition to the series in Generation III. As such, they are difficult to use separately.
* Spinda's main gimmick is the variable designs on its body, in a bit of an expansion of the Unown concept.
* Kecleon has a unique ability unto itself, however this ability makes it notoriously difficult to use in battles.
* Luvdisc are weak, but can be caught holding Heart Scales which can be used to teach old moves.
* Chatot is comparatively weak to others of its type, and it also has a high catch rate, but it can use Chatter to repeat back messages recorded on the DS microphone.
Trivia
*Chatot's US name was revealed on December 17, 2006.
*Prior to the release of Diamond and Pearl, Chatot was believed to be the first naturally pure Flying-type Pokémon.
*Chatot is one of two Pokémon that says its Japanese name in its cry. The other is Clefairy.
*Although Chatot's tail very closely resembles a metronome, it cannot learn Metronome.
*Its official artwork gives the sense that Chatot have an evil nature, but in anime appearances, it seems very cheerful and peppy. In its Diamond and Pearl sprite, the latter was the case. However, its Platinum sprite now corresponds with the official artwork.
*Chatot is the only Pokémon whose cry is not altered when it faints or is sent out with a status condition.
*Chatot is considered by many fans to be a novelty Pokémon, due to it being comparatively weak compared to other Flying-types and whose inclusion in the game simply seems to make use of the Nintendo DS microphone for its Chatter attack.
Origin
Chatot closely resembles a Masked Lovebird, a kind of small parrot. Its head looks like an eighth note, and its tail resembles a metronome. Additionally, its white neck feathers resemble a collar.
Name origin
Chatot's name comes from chat and parrot. Chatot's Japanese name comes from the words parrot and rap. The name could also come from the Japanese word ぺらぺら perapera, which can mean "fluent in languages" but also "blah blah blah", referring to how incessantly some parrots will talk and chatter.
If the Pikachu and its mating partner are put into the daycare and they meet the conditions to produce an egg, the hatched Pichu will have Volt Tackle.
"Pikachu, transformed into a ball of light that can slam into foes. It can also fly to chase down those who try to jump out of range.
It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Biology
Physiology
Zangoose are fairly large mammalian Pokémon that have the characteristics of mongooses and cats. They are mostly white in color, but possess deep red markings on its face, chest and paws. These markings make it appear that it has been involved in a vicious fight and is covered in "blood". They have long sharp claws that are their main weapons. In earlier sprites, these claws were purple in color.
Gender differences
None.

Special abilities
Zangoose's Immunity ability makes it immune to Poison. This is possibly an adaptation that was developed over time to deal with the fangs and tail of its nemesis, Seviper. It is also capable of any elemental attack that isn't Water.

Behavior
Zangoose are bitter enemies with Seviper, the two will battle each other to the bitter end. It is suggested this rivalry has lasted for ages.
In Smells Like Team Spirit, it is discovered that Paul found Chimchar being attacked by a group of Zangoose. Because of the amazing power it used fighting the Zangoose, Paul decided to capture it. Later, Chimchar was to fight another Zangoose and nearly lost to it.
In Tears For Fears! another group of Zangoose appeared before Team Rocket and fought with Jessie's Jessie. Later, Chimchar found the courage to defeat them.
Trivia
* As its name suggests, actual Mongooses to bear some resemblance to cats and ferrets but are otherwise not closely related.
* Although it is stated that Seviper and Zangoose are bitter enemies, they are both in the Ground egg group, meaning that they can breed in the games.
* Despite its sharp claws, as well as the basis of its name (see below), Zangoose is unable to learn Cut.
* The rivalry between Seviper and Zangoose is based on the relationship between the mongoose and the king cobra - the cobra is the largest venomous snake in the world, and the mongoose is one of its few predators.
** The markings on Zangoose's chest and the area of Seviper's body directly under its head resemble and M and an S, relating to the fact that the two were modeled after the mongoose and snake.
* From Generation III to Generation IV, Zangoose's claws have changed from purple to black.
* Before Generation IV, Zangoose was the only Pokémon to learn Crush Claw by leveling up.
* Zangoose is compatible with the RSE move tutor that teaches Thunder Wave, but not the TM that teaches the move that was introduced this generation.

Origin
Zangoose is, as its name implies, based on a mongoose.

Name origin
Zangoose's name is a portmanteau of mongoose, a small, cat-like carnivore that is well known for its ability to hunt and kill venomous snakes, and 刪 san, cut down.
