[[Cerulean City]] is a peaceful seaside city located in the north-central part of [[Kanto]]. Places of interest include the [[Miracle Cycle|Bike Shop]], [[Cerulean Gym]], and [[Cerulean Cave|a mysterious cave]] on the edge of town.

In the house next to the Pokémon Center is a girl who cares for injured Pokémon. She has nursed a {{p|Bulbasaur}} back to health, but now it needs a good Trainer to raise it properly. To get Bulbasaur your Pikachu's happiness level needs to be high enough or in your party but fainted.

===Gym Badge Man===
In the northwest house is a man who will explain the effects of the eight [[Badge|Gym Badges]]. The first five Badges enable the use of [[HM]] moves in the field. Four Badges increase a certain stat during battle, raising each respective skill to 112.5% of the normal value. The four other Badges ensure a Pokémon's obedience during battle. There is also a hidden [[Rare Candy]] in his back yard.

The house behind the Gym is blocked off by a police officer. It seems that [[Team Rocket]] has stolen [[TM28|a valuable item]] from the people living here. Nothing can be done about this now, so set your sights on the Gym.

The [[Cerulean Gym]] specializes in {{type|Water}} Pokémon, so {{t|Grass}}- and {{type|Electric}} attacks will work wonders. This will likely be one of the easiest Gyms to defeat, as you have both {{p|Pikachu}} and {{p|Bulbasaur}} on your team. With moves like {{m|ThunderShock}} and {{m|Vine Whip}} at your disposal, you should have little trouble winning your second Badge.

Cerulean Gym is also one of the few buildings where wild Pokémon can be found and caught.

After he runs off, there are sixteen Trainers between [[Cerulean City]] and the [[Sea Cottage]]; luckily you can backtrack to the Pokémon Center to heal up as necessary. When you beat the five Trainers on the bridge, a disguised [[Team Rocket]] Grunt tries to get you to join the organization. He attacks when you decline his offer, but gives up a valuable {{DL|Valuable item|Nugget}} when you defeat him.

There is [[Damian|a guy]] on the hill who thinks that he should release his {{p|Charmander}} because he is no good at raising Pokémon. Agree to take good care of it and it's yours! Pick up {{TM|45|Thunder Wave}} before leaving; this non-damaging move causes {{status|paralysis}}, which can be useful when catching new Pokémon.

==Route 25==

There are nine more Trainers to fight on your way to the cape. One of them is standing in a line of trees, and you'll need to lure him out with a battle to reach the {{TM|19|Seismic Toss}} lying behind him. {{m|Seismic Toss}} can be helpful against durable Pokémon because it inflicts damage equal to the user's level, regardless of the combatants' {{stat|Attack}} or {{stat|Defense}}.

===Sea Cottage===
The Sea Cottage on [[Kanto Route 25]] belongs to [[Bill]], a famous Pokémon researcher. His latest experiment has gone wrong, and his DNA was combined with that of a Pokémon! He asks for your help, so when he steps into the machine, activate the program on his PC to return him to normal. As thanks, he gives you an {{key|I|S.S. Ticket}}. This ticket lets you board the [[S.S. Anne|luxury cruiseliner]] that is docked in [[Vermilion City]], which also happens to be the location of the third Gym. Before leaving the cape, re-enter the cottage and check out Bill's PC to view his favorite Pokémon, the [[Eeveelution|Eevee family]]. This adds {{p|Vaporeon|three}} {{p|Jolteon|new}} {{p|Flareon|pages}} to your Pokédex.

==Cerulean City==
Back in {{ci|Cerulean}}, you'll see that the officer blocking the burgled house has moved out of the way. Inside lie obvious signs of a break-in, including muddy footprints, overturned plants, and a gaping hole in the wall that was used as an escape route. Step through the hole to find the thief.

When he loses, the {{tc|Team Rocket Grunt|Rocket}} hands over the stolen [[TM28]] before running off. {{m|Dig}} is useful when in a cave, as it instantly returns you to the entrance.

==Route 5==

The tall grass here is home to a few new Pokémon. An {{p|Abra}} is always quick to {{m|teleport}} away, meaning that you'll need to be even faster to prevent that. It's a good idea to have a {{p|Jigglypuff}} {{m|sing}} it to {{status|sleep}}, or have Pikachu {{status|paralyze}} it with {{m|Thunder Wave}}, before throwing a Poké Ball.

You can't get through the [[gate]] to [[Saffron City]] yet, so take the [[Underground Path (Kanto Routes 5-6)|Underground Path]] to {{rt|6|Kanto}}. At the north end is a woman who offers to trade her {{p|Machoke}} for your {{p|Cubone}}.

The house on the hill is the [[Pokémon Day Care]]. The old man inside will raise one Pokémon at a time for you while you are away. A Pokémon left here will gain one [[Experience|experience point]] for every step you take. If you bought the {{p|Magikarp}} near [[Mt. Moon]], this is a good way to raise it. The downside is that he will make every decision for you; he may delete a move you like, or ignore a new move. He charges {{PDollar}}100, plus another {{PDollar}}100 for every new level, to return a Pokémon.

When you beat the five Trainers on the bridge, a disguised [[Team Rocket]] Grunt tries to get you to join the organization. The Sea Cottage on [[Kanto Route 25]] belongs to [[Bill]], a famous Pokémon researcher. His latest experiment has gone wrong, and his DNA was combined with that of a Pokémon! He asks for your help, so when he steps into the machine, activate the program on his PC to return him to normal. As thanks, he gives you an {{key|I|S.S. Ticket}}. This ticket lets you board the [[S.S. Anne|luxury cruiseliner]] that is docked in [[Vermilion City]], which also happens to be the location of the third Gym. Before leaving the cape, re-enter the cottage and check out Bill's PC to view his favorite Pokémon, the [[Eeveelution|Eevee family]]. This adds {{p|Vaporeon|three}} {{p|Jolteon|new}} {{p|Flareon|pages}} to your Pokédex.

==Cerulean City==
Back in {{ci|Cerulean}}, you'll see that the officer blocking the burgled house has move out of the way. Inside lie obvious signs of a break-in, including muddy footprints, overturned plants, and a gaping hole in the wall that was used as an escape route. Step through the hole to find the thief.

==Route 5==

The tall grass here is home to a few new Pokémon. An {{p|Abra}} is always quick to {{m|teleport}} away, meaning that you'll need to be even faster to prevent that. It's a good idea to have a {{p|Jigglypuff}} {{m|sing}} it to {{status|sleep}}, or have Pikachu {{status|paralyze}} it with {{m|Thunder Wave}}, before throwing a Poké Ball.

You can't get through the [[gate]] to [[Saffron City]] yet, so take the [[Underground Path (Kanto Routes 5-6)|Underground Path]] to {{rt|6|Kanto}}. At the north end is a woman who offers to trade her {{p|Machoke}} for your {{p|Cubone}}.

For your {{p|Pikachu}}, the first Gym may be one of the toughest. The [[Pewter Gym]] officially specializes in the {{t|Rock}} type, though [[Brock]]'s Pokémon also belong to the {{t|Ground}} type. Pikachu's {{t|electric}}al attacks are useless here, but it can still attack with physical moves like {{m|Quick Attack}}. Use a combo of {{m|Tail Whip}} and Quick Attack if you want to use Pikachu. Using {{m|Double Team}}, which it learns at level 15, will be especially helpful. {{t|Grass}}- and {{type|Water}} attacks would inflict massive damage, but {{t|Fighting}} moves are also effective. If you happened to catch a {{p|Mankey}} on {{rt|22|Kanto}}, its {{m|Low Kick}} move can be a big help against Brock's Pokémon. If you prefer to use either {{p|Nidoran♀}} or {{p|Nidoran♂}} for this fight, level it up to level 12 when it learns {{m|Double Kick}} which should take Brock out.

===The Magikarp Salesman===
A Poké Center stands near the entrance to [[Mt. Moon]]. Inside is a shady man that will offer to sell you a {{p|Magikarp}} for {{PDollar}}500. The fish can do nothing but {{m|Splash}} until level 15, but evolves into the powerful {{p|Gyarados}} at level 20. If you have the money to spare, you can have a strong {{type|Water}} Pokémon that much sooner, but you can soon hook one for free with the right [[Fishing|fishing rod]].

To the south are two more Trainers. There are also three items lying around, including a [[Potion]], {{DL|Vitamin|Rare Candy}}, and an [[Escape Rope]]. A Rare Candy raises a Pokémon's level by one, and an Escape Rope warps you to the cave entrance if you need to heal up. Go north and climb down the next ladder.

Beat up the second Rocket grunt, then pick up {{TM|01|Mega Punch}} on the platform. Check the boulder for a hidden [[Ether]] and return to the main floor.

Continue along the tunnel to the northwest corner of the cave. Grab the {{evostone|Moon Stone}} in the corner and take the ladder to the basement.

Follow the winding tunnel to the northwest, where a {{tc|Super Nerd}} claims both [[fossil]]s lying here as his own. Defeat him, and he lets you take your pick of the two. Like the [[Old Amber]], the scientists on [[Cinnabar Island]] can resurrect a prehistoric Pokémon from each fossil. The [[Dome and Helix Fossils|Helix Fossil]] will become an {{p|Omanyte}}, while the [[Dome and Helix Fossils|Dome Fossil]] will become a {{p|Kabuto}}. Both are {{2t|Rock|Water}} Pokémon. Head for the final ladder with your new fossil in tow, and [[Team Rocket trio|a pair]] of Rocket grunts appear and attacks.

The first building you'll reach is the [[Pokémon Center]]. This Pokémon hospital will heal your team to full health and normal status, and Trainers are free to use the PC in the corner. ==Viridian City==
The old man that had blocked your way northward has had his coffee now. When you pass him, he tries to show you how to catch a Pokémon. It doesn't work though, and he runs off to buy more Poké Balls. Before heading north, detour to {{rt|22|Kanto}} in order to battle {{ga|Blue|your rival}} and catch some new Pokémon.

The game begins in the [[player's house]], with him/her standing in front of a [[Super Nintendo Entertainment System|NES]]. Boot up the PC on the desk and access the Item Storage function. Shut down the machine and head downstairs. {{ka|Mom}} says that {{prof|Oak}} has been looking for him/her, so head outside. Welcome to Pallet Town!

Oak is nowhere to be found, so head north into the tall grass on the edge of town. From out of nowhere, Oak appears! He yells at the player for trying to leave on its own, without a Pokémon for defense against the wild Pokémon roaming around. He leads the player back to the lab.

* {{p|Bulbasaur}} is perfect for beginners. It can easily mop up Pokémon in the {{gy|Pewter}}, {{gy|Cerulean}}, and {{gy|Viridian}} Gyms, and resists the Pokémon in the {{gy|Vermilion}} and {{gy|Celadon}} Gyms. It is also unaffected by the {{status|Poison}} status ailment. It may have trouble with the {{gy|Saffron}} and {{gy|Cinnabar}} Gyms, but at that point in the game you should have some great Pokémon to back it up. Bulbasaur's final form, {{p|Venusaur}}, is capable of learning {{m|Earthquake}}, a useful move when facing {{type|Fire}} Pokémon.
* {{p|Charmander}} is the most difficult Pokémon for beginners to use, since it will be at a disadvantage early on. However, it learns {{m|Metal Claw}} on level 13, which gives it a fighting chance at the [[Pewter Gym]]. Adding to this, its disadvantages are done with after the Cerulean Gym. While Charmander's only real advantage is at the [[Celadon Gym]], you will still be able to deal with the remaining Gyms fairly well. Its final evolution, {{p|Charizard}}, is noted for being quite powerful, and is capable of learning {{m|Earthquake}} to deal with its {{t|Rock}} and {{t|Electric}} weaknesses.
* {{p|Squirtle}} is the second-easiest for beginners. It can defeat the Pewter, Cinnabar, and Viridian Gyms without much effort, but can do little against the {{gy|Vermilion}} and {{gy|Celadon}} Gyms. Its movepool is relatively limited, and it may have trouble against the other {{type|Water}} Pokémon in the [[Cerulean Gym]]. Squirtle's final evolution, {{p|Blastoise}}, is capable of learning {{t|Ice}} and {{t|Ground}} moves like {{m|Ice Beam}} and {{m|Earthquake}} to cover its weaknesses.

After selecting a Pokémon, {{ga|Blue}} chooses the Pokémon with an advantage type. Head for the door to be drawn into battle!

During the battle, Oak will explain a few basics. If the player's Pokémon is running low on {{stat|HP|health}}, use the {{DL|Potion|Potion}} from the PC. Regardless of which two Pokémon face off, their chances of winning are about the same; none of them know any moves of their own type, so Blue has no advantage just yet. When the battle ends, he leaves the Lab.

Exit the building and head north to reach {{rt|1|Kanto}}.

== Route 1 ==

{{rt|1|Kanto}} is a short path that connects [[Pallet Town]] to [[Viridian City]] in the north. Without {{ball|Poké}}s, it is impossible to catch any of the wild {{p|Pidgey}} or {{p|Rattata}} yet, but battling a few will earn the player's young Pokémon some [[experience]].

The man at the south end of the route works at the Poké Mart in Viridian, and gives away a free {{DL|Potion|Potion}} as a sample. It is also possible to rest up at home by talking to {{ka|Mom}}.

=== Pokémon Center ===
The southernmost building is the local [[Pokémon Center]]. This Pokémon hospital will heal a Trainer's team to full health and normal status, and the PC in the corner is free to use. In addition to accessing the Item Storage system, these PCs can also access the Pokémon Storage system. As Trainers may only travel with up to six Pokémon at once, any others are immediately transferred to storage upon capture.

=== Poké Mart ===
Behind the Pokémon Center is the local [[Poké Mart]]. These stores offer a variety of {{ball|Poké}}s, {{DL|Potion|Potion}}s, and other items. Upon entering the building, the cashier asks the player to deliver {{key|III|Oak's Parcel|a package}} to [[Professor Oak]]. The cashier will not sell anything until the delivery is made.

{{ga|Blue}} reappears halfway along the route, and challenges the player to another battle. He has added a {{p|Pidgey}} since the previous battle, but this should still be an easy fight.

Check the tree near the entrance for a hidden {{DL|Status condition healing item|Antidote}}, then follow the trail to the northwest to reach a {{ball|Poké}} in the tall grass. Turn around and head for the southeast corner to get a {{DL|Potion|Potion}}. Head north for another {{DL|Status condition healing item|Antidote}}, then turn west. Zigzag through the trees, then collect another {{DL|Potion|Potion}} from the clearing. Trek through the tall grass to fight Bug Catcher Sammy and find another {{DL|Potion|Potion}}, then exit through the gate to re-emerge on {{rt|2|Kanto}}, and continue north to [[Pewter City]].
