Route 38 is an east-west route located in west Johto. The western terminus is at Route 39 near Farm and the eastern end is located at a guard house on the western edge of Ecruteak City. Like Route 39, which becomes Route 38 southeast of MooMoo Farm, this route was only featured in Generation II and has not been seen since.

Route description
Even though Route 38 maintains a pure east-west alignment as a whole, there are no less than four separate paths that trainers can take between Ecruteak and Route 39. The northern-most path leads trainers into the path of three other trainers, two of which offer to give out their phone number for rematches at a later date. In Pokémon Crystal, one of these trainers, Lass Dana, will also give trainers who register her number an occasional Thunderstone. Over half of this path is made up of grass patches.

The upper middle path is a branch of the northern path, separating near Dana and merging with the northern path near Route 39. There are no trainers along this short stretch; there is, however, a patch of grass that is home to several species of wild Pokémon.

Unlike the two upper paths, which allow for two-way traffic, the lower paths are configured to allow only one direction of passage. The lower middle path is designed for travelers heading west to Olivine City and is a viable alternative to the grass-lined northern path. The path heads due west from the guard house and travels down a fence-lined walkway that is home to one trainer. Past this trainer, there is a Berry bush just before a ledge that overlooks a grass-lined pathway. After hopping this ledge, trainers are forced to head north along this passageway, encountering another trainer before merging into the upper middle path.

The southern-most path is an "express route" from Olivine to Ecruteak and is designed so that only eastward movements are permitted. After breaking from the northern path near Route 39, the path heads south, passing a signpost before traversing a ledge that borders a T-intersection. At this junction, trainers can either head north into the field of grass along the lower middle path or continue east along the southern edge of the ledge of the lower middle path and, eventually, along the fenced area to Ecruteak.
Route 36 is a north-south, as well as an east-west route located in central Johto. Its northern terminus is at Route 37 south of Ecruteak City, its southern and western termini are at Route 35 and the National Park, respectively, and its eastern terminus is at Violet City.

It is the only route in the Pokémon world to have five different junctions (the fifth being the Ruins of Alph's north entrance).

Route description
Ecruteak-Violet
Heading south from Ecruteak, Route 36 is split in half by a series of trees. The western half proceeds south, passing a trainer duo before merging with the eastern half southwest of a grass patch that blankets the southern portion of the eastern half. Now one route, Route 36 continues south, turning to the east and becoming extremely narrow as it meets the Route 35 connector path. At this junction, trainers have encountered Sudowoodo several times, using a Squirtbottle to move the Pokémon.

East of the junction, a man will give TM08, Rock Smash (contained in HM06 in Generation III), to any trainer who is able to move Sudowoodo. To his northeast on Thursdays, Arthur of the Weekday Siblings will give trainers a Hard Stone, which increases the power of Rock-type moves by 10%. South of this point is the north entrance to the Ruins of Alph, which also has an entrance on Route 32.

The route continues due east before turning south as it arrives in the west side of Violet.

Route 35 Connector
This path is an extension of Route 36 that links Route 36 to Route 35 and the National Park. Heading south from its northern terminus at the "Sudowoodo Junction", the route curves west, passing Schoolboy Alan and a grass patch before arriving at a T-intersection. To the north is another trainer, an Ice Berry tree, and the east entrance to the National Park. To the south is Route 35 (however, without Cut, this path is a dead end).
Route 34 is a final trek after the long way through Ilex Forest. Unlike the route before, this route has a lot of long grass and many Trainers. Route 34 is also where the first ever breeding center is located.

Route Description
The route is essentially straightforward after exiting Ilex Forest. There is a path where no long grass grows, however, it is filled with many trainers. This road can be difficult if a trainer doesn't go back to Azalea Town to heal their Pokémon after facing his/her rival in the forest.

The breeding center, run by an old couple, is one of the most prominent things located here. Located merely steps away from the famous Goldenrod City, this center allows for compatible male and female Pokémon to breed and produce an egg. It also allows trainers to leave up to two of their Pokémon to level up, costing, like the Pokémon Daycare on Route 5, 100 Pokémon Dollars plus an additional 100 per level up for each Pokémon. Quite ironically, this route is also the fifth route in Johto.

Route 32, unlike the route before it, is a long, trainer-heavy route leading directly south from Violet City and ending at the mouth of Union Cave. Much like Route 3 in Kanto, Route 32 ends with a Pokémon Center near the cave.

Route description
The fourth route that trainers from New Bark encounter, Route 32 is the first in Johto to see the player's destination to the south– and a far-off one at that. After exiting Violet City through a small path with a Przcureberry in a clearing, the player comes to a three-way intersection. Either they can head back up north, to Violet City, if they have some business to finish there, west, into the Ruins of Alph, to discover the secrets there, or continue south along the route. After moving south around the large rock, players will find a Cutable tree on its western side, the path behind which leads them to a man who will give them TM05, Roar.

From there, the player should head south, going east or west around the next rock (leading them through long grass or near a Trainer, respectively). A small bit further south, the route opens up, and players can go along the western side of a small inlet of ocean, facing wild Pokémon and trainers, or cross this on the pier, and come upon three Fishermen.

At this point, players should reach the Pokémon Center, where they can heal their Pokémon from the long journey just in time to enter Union Cave. Just to the north of the Center, on Fridays, Frieda will appear to give the player a Poison Barb, which enhances the power of Poison-type moves.

Walking straight south from the Center's entrance, another trainer will be encountered– the last on the route. Directly west of him is the entrance to Union Cave, the first mandatory dungeon-like area of Johto.
Route 22 is a short east-west road located in western Kanto. In every Generation, the eastern terminus is at Viridian City. The western terminus, however, varies by Generation, making Route 22 one of only two routes (the other being Route 23) whose termini change over time. In Generation I and Generation III, the western terminus is at the Pokémon League building separating Route 22 from Route 23. In Generation II, the terminus is at the Pokémon League Reception Gate, which connects Route 22 to Route 26, Route 28 and Victory Road.

Route description
After departing Viridian, Route 22 turns south at a line of trees before circling around the bottom of the treeline and passing north through a grassy patch of wild Pokémon. North of the patch, the route turns west, passing over a small hill as well as a small pond. Route 22 then turns south, hopping over a ledge into another patch of grass. Six paces to the south, Route 22 returns west, then north, passing through a hole in the fence outside the checkpoint building. To the northeast, the road goes through a break in a ledge before entering the building, emerging as Route 23 on the north side.

The ledge over the western grass patch causes the route path from Viridian to the Pokémon League building to become a westbound-only path. To return east, a ledge lines the bottom of the route, providing a pathway for trainers to return to Viridian. The pathway, two paces wide, rejoins the route southwest of Viridian.

The Rival makes two appearances on Route 22 near the first grass patch in Generation I and Generation III. The first battle is optional and affects what Pokémon become part of his team in Pokémon Yellow. The second battle is mandatory.
Route 21 is a long north-south water route located in southwest Kanto. Its northern terminus is at Pallet Town. The southern terminus is at the north shore of Cinnabar Island, where the water around the area becomes part of Route 20.

Route description
From Pallet, the route begins as a small channel of water. South of the town, an outcrop of land on the route's east side holds the only grassy area on any water route in Pokémon history. Past the grassy area, the mainland terminates and the route widens significantly in size.

South of this point, the look of the route varies greatly by Generation. In Generation I, there are two small bridges containing two trainers each spread out along the route. Five other trainers are also found along the route. In Generation II, the bridges remain but only one trainer is found on one of the bridges. Two more trainers are located in the water. Generation III replaced the bridges with sandy islands and added five additional islands as well. Trainers can be found on four of the islands, as well as in five locations in the water, making a total of nine trainers.

In every Generation, the route runs directly north-south in the water, reaching its southern terminus at Cinnabar near the southernmost trainer.
Route 20 is an east-west water route located in southern Kanto. Of the three water routes in Kanto, Route 20 is the shortest in length. The eastern terminus is located at the southeastern portal of the Seafoam Islands while the western end is on the north shore of Cinnabar Island, where it becomes Route 21.

Route description
From the southern entrance to the caves underneath Seafoam (guarded by a trainer in Generation III), Route 20 curves west, passing south of Route 19's western terminus through a narrow channel before expanding to the width of Route 19 west of Seafoam Island. In every Generation, there is a small rest platform just west of Seafoam Island (though this has become an island in Generation III). This rest area is occupied by a trainer in Generation I and Generation III.

Depending on the Generation, the layout of Route 20 between this point and Cinnabar varies. In every Generation, however, the essence is constant, as the route continues directly west to Cinnabar, where it encircles the island and meets Route 21 on Cinnabar's north side.

Generation I
From the rest station, there are three more trainers, two of which are located very close to each other, before arriving at Cinnabar. There are also two more trainers along Route 20, one near the western shore of Seafoam Island and another just south of the Seafoam entrance on Route 20 in the water.

Generation II
The only item of interest between the rest station and Cinnabar is a lone trainer southwest of the platform.

Generation III
Unlike previous Generations, Generation III featured no less than four rest islands, two of which contain trainers. From the rest island present in all Generations west, the route passes north of a small island (with trainers directly to the north and west of it) before heading south of the largest rest island on the route, north of another small island with a trainer and north of another trainer before coming to Cinnabar.
Differences Among Generations
In addition to the changes noted in the Route description, Route 20 saw other changes in Generation II.

Generation II
The length of Route 20 was cut by half in the second Generation, which likely resulted in the number of trainers being cut to one. Also, the labyrinth of rocks that were present around Seafoam, prohibiting direct access to Route 19 from Route 20 and vice versa, were removed. Lastly, the southern entrance to Seafoam Islands became a Pokémon Gym to compensate for the loss of the Gym on Cinnabar, which was destroyed in a volcano eruption.
Route 19 is a predominantly east-west water route in southern central Kanto. Its eastern terminus is at Fuchsia City. Its western end is at the Seafoam Islands, where it becomes Route 20.

Route description
Heading south from Fuchsia, Route 19 becomes a dual carriageway, also known as a divided highway, as a series of ledges and a rock wall separate the route into a southbound-only west half and a dual-direction east half. After three ledges, the rock wall ends and the route is reunited on an unnamed beach. In Generation I and Generation III, two Swimmers patrol the beach for trainers to battle. Just south of the trainers is the Route 19 signpost, located on the shore of the ocean. At the signpost, the land ends but Route 19 continues south as the lowest-numbered water route in the Pokémon world.

The route continues to run north-south over the southern Kanto seas for roughly 40 paces before turning to the west for approximately another 60 paces. Over these two stretches, the route encompasses 11 (Generation I), six (Generation II), or 13 (Generation III) trainers.

Route 19 makes landfall on the northeast corner of an island that plays home to the entrance and exit of the Seafoam Islands (though the two portals are located on the same island, the separate mounds that they make result in the "s" being added to "Island" in its name). The actual route itself continues southwest across the island, passing the northwest entrance to the subterranean caves of the island before occupying a small water channel holding a trainer, where it terminates. The eastern terminus of Route 20 is located just southeast of this point, separated from Route 19 by a line of immobile rocks.
Differences Among Generations
Each Generation has added their own signature touch to Route 19, each time maintaining the essence of the route.

Generation I
In Pokémon Yellow, a house was placed on the beach below Fuchsia. Inside, a surfer named "Dude" allows trainers to partake in a mini-game entitled Pikachu's Beach if the trainer has a Surfing Pikachu. The surfer, as well as the Surfing Pikachu premise, mirrors that of The Pi-Kahuna.

The east side of Seafoam Island, located on Route 19, is one of the two sites where Missingno. can be encountered and the Rare Candy Cheat can be activated. The other site is on the east shore of Cinnabar Island.

Generation II
When trainers first approach Route 19 from the eastern terminus, the land portion of the route is under construction for renovations. After entering Route 19 from the west, the construction will be completed.

The rock formations that force trainers to land on Seafoam Island when approaching from Fuchsia have been removed in Generation II, making a seamless transition from Route 19 to Route 20 possible. Also, the northwest portal of the Seafoam Islands has been sealed off while the southeast portal has been transformed by Blaine into a Pokémon Gym to compensate for the loss of his Gym on Cinnabar, which was destroyed in a volcano eruption.

Lastly, a guard house was added between Fuchsia and the beach.

Generation III
All aspects of the route were restyled in Generation III, as the rock columns that bordered the route in the first two Generations were replaced by a series of prototypical rock formations. Also, the beaches were given a rounded look to enhance their appearance.
Route 18 is a short east-west path in central Kanto that serves as the southern end of Cycling Road. The eastern terminus is at the west border of Fuchsia City while the western terminus is at the southern end of Route 17.

Route description
The path of Route 18 runs directly east-west for its entire length.

Just outside Fuchsia is a small area south of the route's main path. Inside of this area is a large patch of grass occupied chiefly by wild Flying-type Pokémon and trainers that specialize in them. West of the secluded area is a lookout station that serves as the divider between Cycling Road and the non-bike path portion of Route 18. On the second floor of the station, trainers can participate in a trade. The details of the trade differ by version, however.

West of the lookout station, Route 18 continues along a narrow strip of land bordered on both sides by water. After a short distance, the route turns north, becoming Route 17 at a gap in a ledge along the route.
Differences Among Generations
Generation I
Generation I was the only Generation that allowed fishing on Route 18. In Generation II, Route 18 was truncated to the lookout station while Generation III prohibited fishing along the entire length of Cycling Road.

The trade of choice in the lookout station varied by version in Generation I. In Pokémon Red and Blue, Lickitung is offered for a Slowbro. In Pokémon Yellow, Parasect is offered for a Tangela.

Generation II
As previously mentioned, the western terminus of the route was moved to the lookout station in Generation II. Also, the lookout station was moved farther west onto the narrow strip of land and the remaining portion of Route 18 exposed to water was blocked off by stones. The number of trainers in the grassy area was reduced to one and a trainer was placed onto Route 18 itself to compensate.

Generation III
In this Generation, the Pokémon that is offered is always Lickitung. However, the Pokémon necessary to complete the trade varies by version. In Pokémon FireRed, that Pokémon is Golduck. In Pokémon LeafGreen, it is Slowbro.
Route 17, also known as Cycling Road, is a north-south route in central Kanto. Only people with Bicycles or Motorcycles are permitted to travel on the road, making the route a favorite hangout for motorcyclists and bicyclists alike. The northern terminus of Route 17 is at Route 16 on top of the steep hill that makes up the entire length of Route 17. The southern terminus is at the base of the hill, where it becomes Route 18.

The hill makes traveling towards Fuchsia City a breeze. The slog uphill towards Celadon City is considerably slower and more difficult.

Route description
From Route 16 south, two stone paths in the grass provide bikers with a guide on where to travel. Just south of the northern terminus is a grassy area containing wild Pokémon east of the eastern path. South of the grass, a third stone path begins, paralleling a narrow channel of water along its entire length.

Several paces south of the north bank of the channel, the middle stone path ends, becoming a dirt path as it runs between the aforementioned water body and a second channel that begins at this point. The west stone path runs along the west bank of the new channel, meeting the dirt path at the southern end of the channel.

About 20 paces south of the junction between the western and central paths, a small strip of land connects the western and eastern paths and separates a small body of water from the long channel to the north. The two paths merge into a single Route 17 just south of this point.

Two more stone paths form at this point, lining the western and eastern edges of the route. They come to an end at a ledge that also marks the end of Route 17.

Though the water is not blocked off from the route, fishing along Route 17 is prohibited.
In Generation II, the southern portion of Route 17 was substantially reduced in length. Also, the number of trainers along the route was reduced from 10 in other Generations to four in Generation II. The design of the route was tweaked slightly as well.
Route 16 is an east-west route located in central Kanto. The eastern end of the route is at Celadon City. Its western terminus is at the northern tip of Route 17 on Cycling Road.

Route description
Main path
Like Route 18 at the southern end of Cycling Road, Route 16 runs directly east-west for its entire length.

Five paces outside Celadon, a Cut-able tree blocks a passage leading to the north half of Route 16. Several paces west of this spot, Route 16 narrows before widening just east of a lookout station. In this station, trainers are forced to board their Bicycle or, in the event that they do not own a Bicycle, are forced to return east to Celadon. In Generation III only, one of Professor Oak's aides is present at this station, giving trainers who have collected data on at least 40 Pokémon an Amulet Coin. West of the station, Route 16 becomes part of Cycling Road.

Now on the bike path, the remainder of the route is filled with Bikers possessing mostly Poison-type Pokémon. Near the middle of the group, Route 16 turns south for a short distance before becoming Route 17 north of Route 17's grassy area.

A sleeping Snorlax is often found at the point where Route 16 becomes narrow in Generation I and Generation III. To move him, trainers must play a Poké Flute to awaken the Pokémon.

Northern half
The northern half of the route proceeds directly north of the Cut-able tree before turning west at the lone patch of grass on Route 16. In Generation III only, just west of this patch are a pair of trainers. Five paces west of the grass is the north half of the lookout station.

On the other side of the station, which does not require trainers to ride a bike in this area, the only item of interest is a house owned by a reclusive trainer. In exchange for keeping her whereabouts a secret, she will give trainers HM02, Fly.

The route terminates in a dead end just west of the house.

Items
Generation I
Differences Among Generations
Generation II
The route was shortened by nearly half in Generation II. Also, every trainer was removed from the route and the lookout station on the northern path was eliminated. Finally, the recluse trainer is no longer present and may have moved to Route 28.

The amount of grass was also reduced.
Route 14 is an extremely short north-south path that connects Route 13 in the north to Route 15 in the south. The southeastern corner of Route 14 is the southeastern-most point in the region of Kanto.

Many of the trainers on this route specialize in Flying-type and Poison-type Pokémon, being primarily Bird Keepers and Bikers.

Water lines the eastern edge of Route 14; however, a fence on the shoreline prevents access.

Route description
From its north end at the maze of Route 13, the path heads south along the east edge of a long treeline. After a distance of roughly 20 paces, there is a gap in the treeline, allowing trainers who can use Cut to remove a small tree and to pass through. Just past this point is the first trainer on the route.

The line of trees continues for another 15 paces before terminating near another trainer, uniting the paths west and east of the trees into one. Directly south of the treeline at this point are a pair of trainers.

Route 14 turns west here as the two paths become separated once again. The path west of the trees, now the upper path of the route, climbs onto a hill that overlooks the entire length of Route 15. This path, however, is only accessible by using Cut to remove a tree blocking the entrance. The eastern path, now the lower path, becomes the main path of Route 15.

Western tree path
Heading north from the point where the two paths merge, the western path encounters four Bikers near the gap in the treeline. North of the Bikers is a grassy area containing wild Pokémon. Access is gained only by removing a Cut-able tree at its entrance.
Differences Among Generations
Route 14 was one of the few, if not only, routes that remained the same as far as layout is concerned in every Generation. In Generation II, the Bikers were removed from the route and, additionally, the number of trainers was reduced to three, with a trainer now located at every extent of the route save the northern side.

A Pokémon collector can also be found wandering the grass in Generation II, looking for a Chansey. However, if you present her a Chansey, she will exchange her Aerodactyl for it. This trade came to be in this Generation due to the loss of the Pokémon Lab, as well as everything else except the Pokémon Center, on Cinnabar Island.
Route 13 is an east-west route located in southeast Kanto. The eastern terminus is at the Silence Bridge portion of Route 12. The western terminus is at Route 14.

Route description
The eastern terminus of Route 13 is actually located on part of the Silence Bridge. The structure heads south, then west along a treeline before reaching solid ground near the southwest corner of a large maze of fences that occupies the entire length of the route. From this point westward, trainers can no longer access the large water body that runs along the southern edge of the route due to a series of shrubs and fences that line the route.

Due west of the maze's east entrance is a hidden PP Up, the location of which is pointed out by a nearby sign. In the northeast corner of the maze is the lone patch of grass along Route 13, accessible only by using Cut to remove a small tree in the way.

On the other side of the maze, the route turns to the south as it becomes Route 14.
In Pokémon Yellow, due to the inability to trade a Spearow for a Farfetch'd in Vermilion City, Farfetch'd were scattered across Routes 12 and 13, allowing trainers to collect Farfetch'd in the wild for the first time (and to this point, the only time). Also, due to the closing of the Safari Zone in Generation II, Chansey were added to the route as well.
Differences Among Generations
Generations I and III
The hidden item in the fence was originally Calcium in Generation I but was replaced with PP Up in Generation III.

Generation II
Among the most notable change in Generation II was the reduction in the length of the route by roughly 60%. Equally notable was the reduction in the number of trainers from 13 to five.
Route 12 is a lengthy north-south route in east Kanto. This route is also known as the Silence Bridge between its southern terminus at Route 13 and the lookout station just south of Lavender Town, its northern terminus. As a whole, the route is a large bridge built over water, making it a popular gathering spot for fishermen. The middle point of the Silence Bridge connects to a lookout station on Route 11.

Route description
Lavender to the lookout station
The bridge that holds the entire length of Route 12 begins just south of Lavender Town. Shortly after its starting point, the bridge comes to a three-way intersection, with the left fork leading to a dead end. The right fork turns south east of the intersection and comes to another intersection, leading to another dead end path holding a sign informing trainers of Lavender Town to the north.

South of this intersection is a lookout station separating the north portion of Route 12 from the Silence Bridge.

Silence Bridge
The first intersection on the Silence Bridge portion of Route 12 is yet another of the three-way variety. The left path leads to a dead end while the right path continues southward. After a brief southward stretch, the bridge turns southwest to avoid an island in the water, eventually intersecting a north-south bridge segment on the western edge of Route 12. The main path of the route uses a portion of this segment before turning east onto an east-west segment. Route 12 then makes a sharp south turn onto another continuous bridge piece. Route 12 gradually makes its way south, passing a fishing pier before arriving at an island, the first piece of solid land along the route's main path since Lavender.

On the west shore of the island, the Silence Bridge resumes, making an upside-down "U" as it proceeds south. After a short time, the bridge makes a turn to the east. This segment of the bridge comes to an end roughly 15 paces east of this point, but Route 12 has already turned off onto another bridge segment, a north-south stretch, by this point. About eight paces south of the intersection between the two segments is the designated "Sport Fishing Area" at the intersection of Routes 11 and 12.

Continuing south, the bridge turns to the southeast just ahead of another island. On this island in every Generation is the home of the Fishing Guru's younger brother, who will give a Super Rod to anyone who expresses a passion for fishing. West of his house, the bridge resumes, traveling to the south and east before coming to an end just after an intersection with another segment. This segment carries the route south to a series of intersections. The two westward routes in this area lead to a peninsula containing a forested area accessible only by using Cut. The lone eastward path leads to another fishing pier. Just south of the southern peninsula path, the route briefly turns to the east before returning south.

At the next intersection, the main path of the route continues south while a westward path leads to the only grassy patch on Route 12. Cut is required for access, however.

The main path of Route 12 continues south along a tree-lined shoreline before becoming Route 13 two paces south of the grassy patch.
Differences Among Generations
Generations I and III
A sleeping Snorlax is often found blocking the intersection between Routes 11 and 12. To move it, a Poké Flute is required. Also, in Generation III, TM16 was replaced with TM48.

Generation II
Route 12, like most routes in Kanto, was shortened considerably in Generation II. Other notable changes included the removal of all grassy areas along the route, the removal of the lookout station between the Silence Bridge and Lavender Town, and the isolation of the former location of the grassy area, now accessible only by Surfing. The number of trainers was also reduced to three, down from eight in previous and future Generations.

The signpost at the north end of Route 12 now reads "Fishing spot". To compensate, the Route 12 notice present on this sign before was moved to the former "Sport fishing area" sign at Route 11. The signpost on Route 13 just southwest of Route 12's end, however, still reads "Route 13: North to Silence Bridge".
Route 11 is an east-west route located in southeastern Kanto. Its western terminus is at Vermilion City and its eastern terminus is at the Silence Bridge, better known as Route 12. Just east of Vermilion, Route 11 meets the southern portal of Diglett's Cave, a major cave route connecting southeast Kanto with Pewter City and the remainder of western Kanto.

Route description
From its junction with Route 12, Route 11 passes over a short bridge before heading west through a clearing in the forest that lines the west side of Route 12. The route becomes more built-up as it approaches a lookout station, becoming fenced on each side. This station is seen by some as the eastern terminus of Route 11.

Inside of the station in Generation I and Generation III, trainers who have collected data on 30 or more Pokémon species in their Pokédex will be able to obtain the Itemfinder from one of Professor Oak's aides. Also, in Generation III, a trainer will trade a Nidorina or a Nidorino for the Pokémon of the opposite gender. The Pokémon requested varies by version. In Generation II, the lookout station has been torn down.

West of the station, the route is completely surrounded by grass patches. To avoid encounters with wild Pokémon, trainers can follow beaten dirt paths through the field. The first such path begins just west of the lookout station. The path turns south before resuming a westward alignment and turning north to intersect a short path that travels to the west. The main path continues north, then west to come to a near four-way intersection. The north and south paths ultimately lead to a dead end surrounded by grass while the west path continues toward Vermilion.

Several paces west of the four-way intersection is another three-way junction. The two routes, which isolate a small patch of grass from the rest of the route, rejoin east of Diglett's Cave. In Generation I and Generation III, the route runs along the north bank of a narrow channel as it meets the southern portal of Diglett's Cave and enters Vermilion. In Generation II, however, the junction that rejoins the two routes is located just east of the Vermilion City limits. The river is also non-existent and Diglett's Cave actually emerges in east Vermilion.
Differences Among Generations
Generations I and III
At the east end of Route 11 is a sleeping Snorlax, blocking not only Route 11 but also Route 12. To move it, a trainer must play the Poké Flute to awaken the Pokémon.

Generation II
In the most noticeable change, the number of trainers on the route had been slashed from ten to four. Just as noticeable is the removal of the lookout station on the east end of Route 11 and the moving of Diglett's Cave from Route 11 to Vermilion. Snorlax was also relocated from Route 12 to the entrance to Diglett's Cave. To move him, trainers had to use a PokéGear tuned to the Pokémon March to move the Pokémon, as the Poké Flute did not exist in Generation II.
Route 7 is an extremely short road that connects Saffron City in the east to Celadon City in the west. In Generation I and Generation III, the thirsty guard at the station on the west side of Saffron will not let anyone pass through to Saffron until some gets them a drink (Tea in Generation III or Lemonade, Water, or Soda Pop in Generation I) from Celadon.

Route description
From the guard house separating Saffron from Route 8, the route heads west, passing a field of grass and the building housing the Underground Path before turning north, then west into Celadon.

The Underground Path on Route 7 travels under Saffron and comes out on Route 8 in the east, just east of the East Saffron guard house.

Route 7 is the shortest route of all to this point in Pokémon history.
Route 9 is an east-west route located east of Cerulean City in northeast Kanto. It is one of the few routes in the Pokémon world that is not easily accessible at one of its termini. To reach Route 9 from Cerulean, trainers must either use Cut to remove a tree at the southern extent of the city to reach a pathway that links Route 5 to Route 9 or travel through a burglarized house to reach the same pathway. Either way, Route 9 is separated from Cerulean by a Cut-able tree at its western terminus. Its eastern terminus is at Route 10 north of the Power Plant.

Route description
Heading east from Cerulean, the route quickly utilizes the rocky terrain of the area, hopping down a ledge and passing a trainer, making this portion of the route a one way, eastbound only passage. Turning east, the route passes an opening to the south that leads to another trainer and TM30, holding Teleport, in Generation I or TM40, containing Aerial Ace, in Generation III. Moving away from the passage, Route 9 comes to a four-way intersection. To the north is the one way, westbound only passage that returns to Cerulean and is occupied by two trainers and a grassy area containing wild Pokémon. To the south is a long passage that ultimately results in a dead end, containing one trainer and a Burn Heal in Generation III. The main path of Route 9 takes the east fork.

To the east of two hills connected by ledges, the route turns north into the path of another trainer. The route also comes to a three-way intersection here, with a fork to the west leading to yet another trainer and a small patch of grass. Route 9 continues northward, turning east, passing another trainer and turning south to the northeast of another small hill. After hopping another ledge that makes the passage east of the four-way intersection a one way, eastbound only path (and which utilizes the dead end passage, which is bordered to its north by a ledge for most of its length, as the westbound only path), the path crosses ways with another trainer as it turns east.

Just east of the trainer is a pair of ledges that allow trainers heading west from the Rock Tunnel to reach the four-way intersection that ultimately leads to Cerulean. Farther east, the route comes to an end at the western extent of a large grassy area, at which the path becomes Route 10.

In Generation I, to get to Lavender Town and Celadon City, the main character would have to travel the length of the route to reach the Rock Tunnel on Route 10.
Route 8 is a road in central Kanto that links Saffron City in the west to Lavender Town in the east. In Generation I and Generation III, the thirsty guard at the station separating Saffron from Route 8 will not let anyone pass through to Saffron until some gets them a drink (Tea in Generation III; Lemonade, Water, or Soda Pop in Generation I) from Celadon City.

Route description
After emerging from the guard house, the route curves to the south near the entrance to the Underground Path, though the degree by which it turns varies by Generation. The route follows a stone formation to the south, turning at its southern tip towards the east. Route 8 turns again ahead of a large area of grass that requires Cut to access, forming an upside-down "U" as it bypasses the patch.

On the other side of the patch, the route turns to the east, then north for a short distance before returning east as it enters Lavender.

The Underground Path on Route 8 allows trainers to bypass Saffron on their way to Celadon. The tunnel comes out on Route 7 in the west, close to Celadon.
Differences Among Generations
Generations I and III
Between Generations I and III, Route 8 is almost identical. In both sets of games, there is a trainer located to the left of the Underground Path building, a string of four trainers near the northwest corner of the grass patch, a trainer near the northeast corner of the patch and two trainers near the eastern terminus at Lavender.

In Generation I, there is a trainer directly south of the Underground Path entrance. In Generation III, however, he was found east of the Path.

Generation III also added a pair of Bikers that patrol the path between the Saffron guard house and the west side of the grass patch. Also, there are Berries hidden amongst the grass in Generation III.

Generation II
As with most Routes in Kanto in Generation II, Route 8 was considerably shortened, particularly in the area of the grass patch (where the route length was reduced by half). The route also saw many other changes. Instead of the large number of trainers featured in Generations I and III, Generation II featured only three Bikers (the self-titled Kanto Pokémon Association) south of the Underground Path, a trainer near the northwest corner of the grass patch, and another along the east side of the patch. By using Cut to pass through the patch, the latter two trainers can be avoided.

A Przcureberry tree also sprouted just northwest of Lavender in Generation II.
}}
Route 10 is a north-south route located in northeast Kanto. The route, separated into northern and southern segments by the Rock Tunnel, runs between Route 9 to the north and Lavender Town to the south. A river along the northern and eastern extents of the route allows for access to the Power Plant via Surfing.

There is also a Pokémon Center east of the north entrance to the Rock Tunnel. In Generation III only, trainers can Fly back to the building.

Route description
Power Plant access
At the point where Route 9 becomes Route 10, a northerly path heads toward the river, as well as a narrow strip of land along the northern tip of Route 10 but fenced off from the rest of the route. From this strip, trainers who possess the ability to use Surf out of battle can Surf east along the river, then south past the remaining portion of the northern half of Route 10 (separated from the riverbank by a long fence) before turning west north of the Rock Tunnel's southern portal and making landfall just southeast of the building.

There is a lone trainer located on the beachfront southwest of the Power Plant.

In Generation III, there is a back door to the Power Plant west of the building; however, a ledge prevents access to it.

Northern segment
Just east of the path leading to the river is the only patch of grass on Route 10. The main path of the route runs along the southern edge of the grass, turning south near the river. Directly south of the patch and east of the north portal of the Rock Tunnel is a Pokémon Center, one of only two in the region that is found outside of a populated area (the Center on Route 3 near Mount Moon is the other). The building is separated from the Rock Tunnel by a string of shrubs and Cut-able trees. Trainers can either Cut down one of the four trees or travel around the blockade, taking on a trainer at the southern end of the blockade.

From the trainer, the route returns north, following the west side of the blockade. The path juts west, then east to avoid a fence before reaching the Rock Tunnel's north entrance.

Southern segment
The south portion of Route 10 acts much like a North American traffic circle in that movement is restricted in a counterclockwise motion around a large mound in the middle of the route. From the south entrance of the Rock Tunnel, the route turns west, then south, passing two trainers and hopping a ledge before encountering a third trainer. Route 10 then turns east to meet a three-way intersection. The south path at this fork leads to Lavender while the east path continues to the east before curving north, traversing a pair of ledges via openings, and returning west to the Rock Tunnel's southern portal.
Differences Among Generations
Generation II
With the closing of the Power Plant as a festering Electric Pokémon haven and the renovation of the facility into an operational power plant in Generation II, the Electric Pokémon were forced into a new grassy patch located just southeast of the Power Plant. As a result, Electabuzz are often found roaming Route 10. In Generation III, which happens at the same time as Generation I, the Power Plant is once again abandoned.

The amount of space between the southernmost point of the northern segment and the north portal of the Rock Tunnel was reduced by half. To compensate, the Pokémon Center was moved three paces south. The tree barricade between the Center and the Rock Tunnel was also removed. The southern segment of Route 10 was largely untouched, except for the removal of a trainer and the relocation of another.

As a whole, the route was reduced significantly in size, as was the Power Plant itself.
Route 118 is an east-west route located in central Hoenn. The route, separated into two segments by the southern extent of a river that splits Hoenn into two mammoth islands, runs between Mauville City to the west and Route 123 to the east. While the western segment is densely populated with trainers on a beach, the eastern half is dominated by grass.

An interesting feature of Route 118 is that each segment has its own background music.

Route description
Western segment
From Mauville, the route is straightforward, traveling directly east-west between the city limits and the west bank of the river. The western half of this path is composed of fields while the eastern portion is a sandy beach. Aroma Lady Rose, the first of three trainers on this side of the river, waits in the fields, looking for trainers to battle. To her east on the riverbank is Guitarist Dalton and a Fisherman.

When trainers first encounter the river, it is impassable as they are often lacking HM03, Surf, at this point. After acquiring the move and the ability to use it outside of battle, trainers can cross the river to reach the eastern half.

The path across the river runs directly east-west and contains no trainers, leaving wild Pokémon as the only concern when crossing the water.

Eastern segment
Route 118 comes ashore on another beach containing a pair of Fisherman. Gabby and Ty are often found in the area as well, looking for up-and-coming Pokémon trainers to battle and interview.

The route continues east along the south edge of a ledge. After passing through a large patch of grass, Route 118 comes to a three-way intersection. The northern path leads to Route 119 while the eastern path passes by a trainer and runs through another large patch of grass before becoming Route 123.

Heading north from the intersection, a four-way intersection allows access to the upper areas that overlook the main path of Route 118. To the west is another trainer, a small area of grass, and a loamy soil patch containing two Sitrus Berry plants. To the east is yet another grass patch and a Hyper Potion. Continuing north, the path becomes Route 119.

*Sitrus Berry: in the loamy soil patch near the center of the route
Route 103 is an east-west route located in western Hoenn. Its eastern terminus is at Route 110 near the Trick House north of Slateport City. The western terminus is at the northern edge of Oldale Town. The route is the second route traversed by trainers in Generation III, though on first encounter, only the western portion of the route is accessible.

The route is often used as a shortcut between Littleroot Town and the rest of western Hoenn to Mauville City and central and eastern Hoenn. In this regard, Route 103 is similar to the Rusturf Tunnel between Route 116 and Verdanturf Town.

Route description
Heading west from Route 110, Route 103 passes an opening in a forest blocked by a Cut-able tree that leads to a pair of items and a loamy soil patch containing two varieties of Berries. Just west of the passage is the first trainer on the route. Continuing west on the path, Route 103 leads into the path of three more trainers, two of which partake in a double battle, before turning northeast and opening up on the east side of a river.

The river itself contains an assortment of wild Pokémon as well as two Swimmers looking to do battle. The path that Route 103 takes across the water body is directly east-west, allowing trainers to quickly traverse the channel.

On the east side of the river are three patches of grass containing more wild Pokémon. The route, from the east, avoids these patches, heading west from the river bank before hopping a ledge west of a grass patch and traveling south into Oldale. From Oldale, it is necessary to travel through a patch of grass to circumvent the ledge and reach the river.

Due to the route's location, it has become a popular training spot for trainers, especially the Rival from Littleroot, who is first seen and battled here.

In Pokémon Emerald, the forest is slightly larger, contains an extra item and is home to two trainers.

Items
*Cheri Berry - in the loamy soil in the forest
