==History==
Ash caught Gliscor as a Gligar in ''[[DP064|Riding the Winds of Change!]]''. It, along with many other {{p|Gligar}} and a {{TP|Paul|Gliscor}} had become trapped in a city after being blown there by a violent windstorm. Gliscor's attempts at using sonar to navigate out of the city were blocked by the tall buildings, and only served to attract more Gligar and the Pokémon soon formed a pack.

The pack survived by picking fruit from trees, and stealing food from humans. After Ash and his friends save the pack, Gligar decides to travel with Ash, allowing him to capture it.

Gligar seems to have a habit of sticking out its tongue and winking when appearing. It also has a tendency to crash land on top of Ash. It would also cry when scolded by Ash as shown in [[DP081]] and [[DP085]]. Additionally, Gligar seems extremely eager to win Ash's attention and approval and wanted to battle very badly, thus convincing Ash to send it out first in the battle against Paul. Not only that, but Gligar seems to be a crybaby of sorts, tearing up very often, especially in fear.

It evolved into a Gliscor in [[DP085]] in order to save Ash from a fall, using the [[Razor Fang]] Ash received from [[Gary Oak|Gary]]. It appears to have kept its personality traits even after evolution, as it still cries when scolded by Ash, winks and sticks its tongue out, as shown in [[DP087]]. In addition, it seems to have trouble gliding properly, as it keeps crashing into obstacles, as seen in [[DP087]].

Unlike most rivals, Zoey seems to be kind and helpful towards Dawn, and is greeted as a friend instead of an enemy. She used to take issue at people who compete in both contests and Gym battles as is seen in her reactions to {{Ash}} in ''[[DP012|Arrival of a Rival]]'' and [[Nando]] in ''[[DP049|Dawn's Early Night]]''. For that she apologized to Ash for her behavior in [[DP076]].

Zoey is largely responsible for the trade of [[Dawn's Aipom|Ash's Aipom]] and [[Ash's Buizel|Dawn's Buizel]]. In ''[[DP012|Arrival of a Rival]]'', she first suggested that Ash should give Aipom to Dawn. In ''[[DP055|Throwing the Track Switch]]'' she brought it up again but this time she suggested a trade after she saw how Buizel had more of a love for battling rather than contests. Ash and Dawn eventually agreed to it and traded their Pokémon.

When he was younger, Meowth lived on the streets in [[wp:Hollywood|Hollywood]]. He was a member of a gang of street Meowth that was led by a {{p|Persian}}; this gang annoyed the humans in town, stealing food and causing trouble in general. One day, Meowth came across a female Meowth named [[Meowzie]]. Since she rejected him and preferred the company of her rich human mistress, Meowth attempted to make himself stand out from other Meowth and become more humanlike to make himself "worthy" of her. Thus, he painstakingly taught himself to speak human language and walk upright like a human. When he approached her after this transformation, she once again rejected him, calling him a freak. Heartbroken, Meowth remembered the first human word he learned to speak - "rocket" - and was inspired to join Team Rocket.

In ''[[EP070|Go West, Young Meowth]]'', Meowth, Jessie, and James returned to Hollywood while following [[Ash Ketchum|Ash]], and Meowth was reunited with Meowzie, who had since been abandoned by her mistress and was forced to join the gang of street Meowth. Meowth fought his former Persian leader to win Meowzie's love, and won, but Meowzie demonstrated that her loyalty was with Persian since he took care of her when she needed it, and Meowth was once again heartbroken.

Because of the effort Meowth exerted while learning to speak and walk like a human, he has not learned the signature move of his species, {{m|Pay Day}}. In ''[[EP096|Meowth Rules]]'', Meowth was worshipped by an island of people who believed that he could bring them riches with Pay Day. When he was caught in a battle meant to induce Pay Day, Jessie and James had to secretly bail him out by throwing the last of their spare change and some of James's prized bottlecaps in order to appease the islanders.

There has been some debate as to whether or not Meowth was ever [[Giovanni|Giovanni's]] "Top Cat" (personal pet). He has stated himself as such in front of Giovanni with no objection (only to say that [[Giovanni's Persian|Persian]] was now in that position). Yet in ''[[H012|Training Daze]]'', he was shown to have been present at Team Rocket Headquarters for a short time, during which we see that Persian is already there. During this time, Meowth became a servant to Giovanni, bringing him food and drinks; however, he was unsuccessful at this task and was assigned to the team of Jessie and James. In light of this, it should be noted that ''The Origin of Love and Youth'' potentially contradicted other stated facts from previous episodes regarding Team Rocket's backstory.

Meowth has an ambitious, conniving, and idealistic personality. He has made it his life goal to please Giovanni (or "Boss," as he and his teammates call Giovanni), and will stop at nothing to capture or steal useful or rare [[Pokémon]], especially [[Ash's Pikachu]], which he has been pursuing since he encountered it in [[EP002]]. Several times, Meowth and Pikachu have had to team up, such as in the episodes ''[[EP104|Bound for Trouble]]'' and ''[[EP274|Hoenn Alone]]'' when both were separated from their respective parties. His relationship with Jessie and James varies in quality. Meowth seems to have aspects of each of his teammates in him; in arguments, he can often be seen siding with either Jessie (usually denouncing James's incompetence) or James (usually complaining about Jessie's overdramatic and rash behavior). Despite these fights, the three remain very close and loyal friends.

Despite his seemingly outgoing nature, Meowth also has a contemplative inner side not seen as often. In one of his image songs, ''[[Meowth's Song]]'', and in ''[[Mewtwo Strikes Back]]'', he is shown to be a bit of a philosopher. In ''Mewtwo Strikes Back'', he and his clone (in addition to Pikachu) were the only Pokémon not to participate in the giant battle, Meowth remarking (in the dub) that the originals and the clones shared the same air, moon, and planet, giving them common ground.

Meowth is an amorous cat, developing crushes on occasion (obviously not as much as [[Brock]], but still a fair amount). Objects of his affections include [[Cassandra]] the (human) herbalist, the aforementioned Meowzie, [[May's Skitty|Skitty]], and another {{p|Skitty}} in [[H009]]. He also has demonstrated aspirations of being a parentlike caretaker, coddling [[Misty's Togetic|Togepi's]] egg before fighting for custody of it only to finally lose it to [[Misty]]. To regain custody of Togepi, he even defeated [[Brock's Steelix|Brock's Onix]] by throwing a bucket of water in its face and finishing it with a Fury Swipes attack to the head.

He has also, since late [[Johto]], had frequent [[Boss fantasy|fantasies]] about presenting Giovanni with various Pokémon. These fantasies often involve whatever creature it happens to be assisting Giovanni in his daily routine.

Much like [[Ash's Pikachu]], Meowth does not stay inside a [[Poké Ball]], and it is never mentioned if he was ever captured by either member of Team Rocket he travels with. Strangely, though he first appeared in the second episode, in an era where [[Ash Ketchum|Ash]] scanned nearly every Pokémon he came into contact with with his [[Pokédex]], it took until ''[[AG109|Do I Hear a Ralts]]'' for Ash to do this to Meowth. However, this was a mere accident: Meowth was dressed up like a {{p|Kirlia}}, and Ash had never seen one before. In ''[[DP002|Two Degrees of Separation]]'', [[Dawn (anime)|Dawn]], unlike Ash, scanned him right away. ==Characteristics==
Fire is a very poor type defensively. Ground, Rock, and Water moves are all very common, while most of the Fire-type's resistances are of little use. Fire-type Pokémon will not survive very long in battle; they must deal damage quickly in order to earn their slot on a team. This reflects the nature of fire being a very destructive force yet at the same time being very fragile.

Offensively, Fire is much more useful. The ability to deal [[super effective]] damage to Steel-type Pokémon is very useful for Pokémon that specialize in [[physical moves]], as many Steel-type Pokémon typically have high {{stat|Defense}} but a low {{stat|Special Defense}} and would have little trouble with any physical moves thrown at them. Also Fire moves are generally powerful, with half of its damaging moves having 100 or more for power and 11 out of 16 having 80 or more.

Quantity-wise Fire-types are rare, with only 17 fully evolved Pokémon among them, of which there are 4 [[legendary|legendaries]] and 4 [[starter Pokémon]]. This makes sense as most forms of fire are extremely rare in nature.

But then Pikachu launched an incredible {{m|Thunderbolt}} that had enough power to catch Paul's interest. Afterwards, he decided to stay and watch the rest of the battle.

=Biology=
==Summary==
Torterra possess a giant, flat-looking shell that resembles those of the [[wp:ankylosauria|ankylosaurs]]. The rim of the shell is white and above their heads is a diamond-shaped extension of the rim. Torterra carry on their shells an enormous tree with soil nearby and three mountain peaks on its back, giving the impression that one is looking at a landscape from a distance. Their bodies are bulky and seem to be too big for their shells. Their bulk no longer allows them to withdraw into their shells as easily as they could as Turtwig, though it gives a sufficient amount of protection from foes. Their main body colors are a dull green on their backs and heads with a brown underbelly and legs. Torterra have several vertical lines running across their backs, though they have fewer lines going across their bellies. They bear two large spikes that jut out of the sides of their heads, making it look somewhat like an Ankylosaurus. Torterra's eyes are intimidating, encircled by a black ring and bearing small red pupils. Their mouth is jagged and at the end of their snout is a dark brown beak, giving them the appearance of a snapping turtle. Their thick, tree trunk-like legs are massive and powerful in order to hold up their enormous, heavy bodies. They bear three toes on each of their legs and appear as if they are actually jagged stones.

Their shell is the basis of their classification as the Continent Pokémon, befitting not only for their shell's appearance, but also for the size of Torterra's actual body. Despite their great size, these Pokémon are peaceful in nature and enjoy being with others of their own kind, preferring to bask in sunlight as they do not like to fight. When immobile, they look as if they are part of the ground upon which they rest, not as though they were a sleeping Pokémon. Because of this appearance, there are occasions when small Pokémon will gather and build nests on the shell of a stationary Torterra. When Torterra do move, they often move in herds in search of water. These herds give the impression of a moving forest. Torterra is the heaviest of all the final evolved starters, and the second tallest, coming in only behind {{p|Feraligatr}}.

Ash's goal, as described in the first episode, ''[[EP001|Pokémon! I Choose You!]]'', is to be the world's greatest [[Pokémon Master]]. Ash began his journey at the age of 10 as a warm-hearted and well-intentioned but stubborn and unskilled [[Pokémon Trainer]]. He was forced to accept the irreverent [[Ash's Pikachu|Pikachu]] from [[Professor Oak]] as his [[starter Pokémon]] because he carelessly broke his alarm clock and woke up late on the day he was set to get his first Pokémon. He was determined to achieve his goal, however, and when he showed his willingness to give up his own safety to keep Pikachu safe, he formed a strong bond of friendship with his Pokémon which would set his course for the future.

However, from that point, Ash still had a lot to learn about becoming a Trainer. He [[captured Pokémon|caught]] his [[Ash's Butterfree|first Pokémon]] by luck, knew nothing about [[Pokémon battle|battling]], and showed a reluctance to admit when he was wrong. Many of his first [[Gym]] [[badge]]s were given to him out of pity or gratitude for his assistance rather than claiming a victory in battle over the [[Gym Leader]]s. Ash has changed a great deal over the course of the series, particularly in regards to his skill at [[Pokémon training]], but his earnestness and determination have remained. Never straying from his goal, he has remained loyal to his friends, his family, and his supporters, but most of all his Pokémon. Ash became a great Trainer by learning to find and use the inner strength of each of his Pokémon by bonding with them and learning where their hidden abilities lie, as well as resorting to unorthodox strategies when fighting particularly challenging opponents. For example, he uses his Pikachu's speed to outmaneuver larger foes and attack, and defeated [[Gary's Blastoise]] with his {{AP|Charizard}} by causing the field to overheat and have Charizard mount a close-range attack while Blastoise was blinded by the steam. Additionally, during the first season of the series, while Ash originally trained not to further himself but instead to catch more Pokémon than his rival, Gary, he later slowed his pace which allowed him (as well as the writers of the anime) to focus on the individual traits of each Pokémon. At the [[Silver Conference|Johto League Silver Conference]], with great humility and maturity, Ash finally won a battle against his old rival, signifying a great milestone in his history. In nearly every episode of the anime, Ash befriends someone who will influence him and cause him to strive to become a better Trainer. Although he is not a dependent individual, he is still young and has learned to make his way relying on his friends. [[Ash's friends|His closest friends]] have joined him on his Pokémon journey through the years: [[Misty]], [[Brock]], [[Tracey Sketchit|Tracey]], {{an|May}}, [[Max]], and {{an|Dawn}}.

He has traversed much of the [[Pokémon world]] and has thus far participated in four [[Pokémon League#Championship competitions|Pokémon League regional competitions]], but he is still learning new things about Pokémon all the time.

Ash apparently has a close connection with [[Legendary Pokémon]], especially {{p|Ho-Oh}} and {{p|Lugia}}. In the English dub of the [[The Power of One|second movie]], he was revealed to be "The Chosen One" - the one who would bring balance back to the world. He also shares his [[aura]] similar to [[Sir Aaron]], a legendary hero, and is supposedly able to manipulate it in much the same way.

He has a [[Contest Pass]] for the [[Sinnoh]] region, though he has stated that the contest he got it for was the only one he intends on entering. He also has one for the Hoenn region as it was required to watch one of the contests held there. Ash also carries around a broken [[Poké Ball]], of which the other half belongs to Gary and is a symbol of their rivalry, as well as [[Misty's special lure]], which she sent to him as a gift, and also half of a ribbon he received in a contest against May before she left to Johto.

==Family==
Ash lived with his mother, [[Delia Ketchum]], until he left for his Pokémon journey at the age of ten.

His father is never introduced. The anime suggests that his father was once a Pokémon Trainer, but it is unclear whether he is still living. There has been much discussion in the fandom as to the identity of Ash's father, though the writers have chosen to not focus on this aspect of Ash's life. Common characters put forward by fans for the role are [[Giovanni]], [[Professor Oak]] and [[Silver (anime)|Silver]]. In [[Pokémon Live!]], Delia told Ash that Giovanni had once been her boyfriend, and that he was Ash's father. However, this has never been officially acknowledged.

Ash is an only child, breaking from the tradition of several other main characters, with the exception of [[Dawn (anime)|Dawn]] and possibly [[Tracey]], whose siblings are often a foil or focal point in their lives.

Also, on the "[[Pokemon Christmas Bash]]" CD there are two songs that show strong evidence of her feelings towards Ash. In Misty's stanza she sings " Hey Santa if you're really listenin' My wishlist has only one thing,Just gimme one dance with Ash, At the Pokémon Christmas bash!".

Even PokéShippers will admit that Ash has not shown any overt proof of liking Misty. This reality often provokes shippers opposed to PokéShipping (especially PalletShippers) to question Ash's sexual orientation as well. However, what we do believe is that Ash is capable of liking Misty, and furthermore, that Ash is undeniably heterosexual. This list combines evidence of both those facts.

* ''School of Hard Knocks''
: Ash and Brock gawk and blush over a picture of Giselle, the top beginner at Pokémon Tech. Later in this episode when Giselle appears in person, Ash grows big puppy dog eyes, blushes heavily, and comments, "She's real pretty, isn't she?". Much to the dismay of PalletShippers, this proves that Ash is attracted to females. Ash has never shown any definitive attraction to his own sex.

: Our hero does a double take when Misty appears with her hair down and dressed in a formal kimono. Upon seeing her, the camera switches to his perspective, the bubbly background usually associated with passionate moments is used, romantic harp strings are played, and Misty's surprised facial expression clearly shows she is being looked at with interest. Also, the entire theme of the episode was romance-oriented, so it's only logical to assume this scene between Ash and Misty is as well.

: Ash, thinking Misty is entering the Princess Festival Contest to take a picture with the movie star host, gets a little jealous, groaning with his arms crossed, "You must really want that picture with Fiorello...". Surprisingly, Misty reassures him she's only doing it for the doll set. Ash, whether he's aware of it or not, feels threatened by the presence of another male in Misty's life.

* ''Navel Maneuvers''
: Climbing Navel Island's central mountain, Misty tells Danny the gym leader to be extra careful. Seeing how much concern Misty is giving to Danny, Ash with the same jealous expression yells, "What's she so worried about him for?!". He's distracted so much by Misty's little crush on Danny that he loses his concentration and falls down the mountain a bit. Much like his behavior in "Princess vs. Princess", another male getting Misty's attention seems to bother him.

* ''Jirachi: Wish Maker''
: On the last day of the comet's showing, Max is disappointed that he will have to part with Jirachi. Ash sits down with him by the river and reassures him that Jirachi will always will be in his heart. Ash tells him, "I had a really good friend, and I miss her every day." Many people would think this would be Misty. However this is in the dub only and can be argued. In the original, he only implies that he had many friends he needed to say goodbye to, not particularly a ''her''.

* ''Buizel Your Way Out of This''
: In this episode when Ash and the others are fishing Ash uses the special lure Misty made for him, and when Dawn asked if she could use it Ash refused causing them both to argue, but while they were distracted a [[Ash's Buizel|Buizel]] came and took their lure's causing Ash to get panicked and with all his determination he planned to get the lure back, once it was returned he seemed very happy and relieved.

: Misty, at the beginning of this episode, continually keeps mentioning how "romantic" the surroundings are. She continues to do this not only in this episode, but subsequent episodes as well.

* ''The Waterflowers of Cerulean City''
: At the outskirts of [[Cerulean City]], Misty attempts to dissuade Ash from going into the city by tempting him to go to [[Vermilion City]]. She does so by mentioning the "neat Pokémon, the yachts pulling into the harbor, and a spot way up on a hill where you can sit and watch a romantic sunset". The mentioning of a romantic scene subtly suggests what she might have intended for all along, especially with how many times she's talked about romantic things in previous episodes.

* ''[[EP014|Electric Shock Showdown!]]''
: After Nurse Joy breaks up an argument between the two of them, she comments that they say when two people fight, they really care about each other; although Ash and Misty instantly reject the idea, they are both blushing slightly when they turn away from the other.

* ''[[EP023|The Tower of Terror]]''
: When Ash enters the tower alone to try and catch a Ghost Pokémon, and is subsequently briefly separated from his body, Misty is the first one of her and Brock to express concern about how long Ash and Pikachu are taking inside. Also, before Ash and Pikachu return to their bodies, Misty is visibly near to tears as she pleads for Ash to wake up.

* ''Pokémon Scent-sation!''
: Misty, unaware that Ash is disguised as a girl among the crowd and using the same girlish demeanor she used in "Ash Catches A Pokémon", dreamily admits to the group, "I wish Ash would've heard that story..." She openly is expressing a desire for Ash's presence.

: Also, during Ash's gym battle with [[Erika]], the girls in the crowd start acknowledging Ash's skill and how much more impressive he is than he looks, provoking Misty to smile with reassurance.

* ''The Legend of Dratini''
: At the beginning of this episode, Ash is marching and singing. Misty is right behind him and longingly stares at him until they reach the [[Kanto Safari Zone|Safari Zone]] warden's house. After Ash sings out his last lines, Misty imitates his enthusiasm and sings her own lines as well. You know the old saying, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery."

* ''March of the Exeggutor Squad''
: Misty goes into perhaps the most extreme fits of blushing in the history of the series, all provoked by a simple compliment from Ash about her skimpy stage outfit. No one blushes like that out of mere embarrassment. She clearly holds Ash's opinion of her in exclusive priority.

* ''The Song of Jigglypuff''
: As Jigglypuff begins singing in the woods, Ash and Brock are standing next to each other while Pikachu and Misty are sitting a couple feet away. After Jigglypuff is done singing, Brock and Pikachu are sprawled out asleep by themselves while Misty and Ash are slumped against each other. It might not have meant anything if the two were already standing by each other, in which case it would have just been convenient, but they weren't. Either they moved into this position because they are very comfortable with each other, or the director(s) might have just thrown this in to plant an idea. It is also interesting to note that when they wake up, Misty comments "what a nice nap."

* ''The Misty Mermaid''
: At the end of this episode, Ash tells Misty how amazing she was at her performance of the underwater play. Misty disproportionately calls Ash's comments "sweet talk" and reminds him of the bike he owes her, something she supposedly forgot about back on [[Cinnabar Island]].

* ''Make Room for Gloom''
: Upon arriving at the Xanadu Nursery, Brock spies on a pretty girl behind the window, after which Ash comes to look and says he doesn't see a pretty girl. Misty then says, "Just turn around" and giggles, clearly addressing Ash. Ash then jokes about her hallucinating, then starts chuckling.

: Ash, finally spotting a {{p|Gloom}} behind the window, asks Brock if "he's getting 'misty' over a gloom," This causes Misty to pull Ash's mouth wide with her fingers and ask him what is he saying about her, mistaking Ash's 'misty' comment with herself. Both seem to be blushing in the midst of their playfulness.

* ''Forest Grumps''
: At the beginning of the episode, Ash and Misty are surprisingly close to one another while tending to their Pokémon. Brock on the other hand is away from them asleep behind a tree.

: Upon reunion, Ash and Misty exclaim each other's names in joy while the camera focuses on their faces. What's interesting to note is how the scripting and animation seem to focus just on their reunion alone.

* ''Scott and The Battle Frontier!!''
: When Ash finally arrives home after his travels in Hoenn, he finds Misty at his house. She makes a point of being there, specifically so that she could see Ash as soon as he arrived back from Hoenn even though she apparently has no idea how soon exactly he would be returning. For all she knew, she could have been expecting a wait spanning multiple weeks.

==Characteristics==
The Dragon-type has been commonly thought of as a legendary or near-legendary type. Because of the minimal amount of weaknesses that they have, they often find a way onto trainers' [[party|teams]]. The downside to the supposed power that they have is that they are slightly harder to raise, with many of them not evolving from their first stage to their second until a [[level]] at which many Pokémon are near their final evolutions, and their final evolution near level 50. Most Dragon-type Pokémon have high Attack and Special Attack.

The Dragon-type is good offensively. Steel is the only type which is resistant to Dragon-type moves. {{m|Dragon Dance}} is also a very common move for physical sweepers.

Defensively, they don't have many resistances in battle, but they can hold off enough attacks to do some damage of their own. Many fully-[[evolve]]d Dragon-types also have a double weakness to {{type2|Ice}} moves, due to their secondary types; {{p|Kingdra}}, whose primary type of Water causes them to lose all weaknesses besides that to Dragon itself, is the only fully evolved Dragon not to have such a weakness. The only other Dragon-types without a double weakness to Ice-types are [[legendary Pokémon]].

As of [[Generation IV]], all fully-evolved Dragon-types also have a secondary type.
