DamageCats
A physical move is one in which the user uses its physical strength or solid projectiles in order to damage its foes. Damage dealt by a physical move depends on both the Attack stat of the attacking Pokémon and the Defense stat of the defending Pokémon.

While most physical moves make contact, some do not. For example, Earthquake does not make contact despite being a physical move.

Generation I-III
Before Generation IV, damaging moves of the following types are physical moves:
* Normal
* Fighting
* Flying
* Ground
* Rock
* Bug
* Ghost
* Poison
* Steel

Shadow moves
The following Shadow moves are physical moves:

Generation IV on
From Generation IV onward, every individual move is designated as either physical or special, independent of its type. Most damaging moves of the types that were physical before Generation IV are physical moves, and most Dark moves are also largely physical. However, there are exceptions, such as Focus Blast and Hyper Beam.

Once per day, Inver may be battled in an Inverse Battle, where type matchups are reversed so that normally super effective moves are not very effective, and vice versa (with immunities becoming weaknesses). Inver has many preset Pokémon, but only chooses a random three during the battle. After beating the Champion, all his Pokémon increase their levels by 10.

A move (Japanese: わざ move), also known as an attack or technique, is the skill Pokémon primarily use in battle. In battle, a Pokémon uses one move each turn. Some moves (including those learned by Hidden Machine) can be used outside of battle as well, usually for the purpose of removing obstacles or exploring new areas.

In the games
Characteristics of moves
A Pokémon can only know four moves at a time, which are drawn from a pool of 559 total moves. However, no single Pokémon has access to each move; all 718 <!--numpkmn--> Pokémon have a given movelist with a limited amount of moves that relate to the type and concept of the species. The amount of moves in each movelist varies between species: some Pokémon, such as Ditto and Unown, only have one move to learn, while Mew can learn 139 moves as of Generation V, and Smeargle can learn Struggle Chatter move via Sketch. Sometimes, Pokémon's movelists vary between evolutionary relatives. This often is tied to a secondary type gained or lost on evolution, but can also provide incentive to prevent a Pokémon's evolution to a higher stage. Most trios and duos have similar movelists.

Pokémon are limited in the way that they may use their moves in battle. The amount of times they can use each move is restricted by the move's Power Points. Power Points vary from move to move, but typically stronger moves have fewer Power Points than weaker moves. The amount of Power Points for each move may be altered by items such as Vitamin. The only move that is not affected by Power Points is Struggle.

The strength of a move is measured by its power, and other factors such as accuracy affect whether it does damage or not. Some moves have additional effects that cause status ailments on the target, and some do no damage at all. Moves that do not explicitly cause harm to their target are known as status moves; the remaining moves are divided into physical and special moves depending on the individual move's characteristics; the category of the move determines whether the move's power relies on the Attack or Special Attack stat. It is important to note that prior to Generation IV, the move's category was dependent on the move's type, rather than a distinct variable.

Learning and unlearning
Since Red and Green, there have been three main methods of acquiring moves on a Pokémon: by leveling up, by use of Technical Machines and by use of Hidden Machines. Generation II added two further methods: Egg moves learned through breeding, and moves taught by a non-player character Move Tutor. These two newest methods have been part of all further Pokémon handheld games.

A Pokémon can only know four moves at a time. In order to learn new moves once four have been learned, it must forget one old move for every new move. Some moves cannot be forgotten naturally, such as moves learned by HM. To remove these, a Trainer must incorporate the help of a Move Deleter. Moves that were available at an earlier level that the Pokémon does not currently know can be learned with the help of a Move Reminder.

In Generation I only, moves learned via level-up won't be learned if a Pokémon gains enough EXP Points to "skip" the level on which they are learned, while in Generation II they were learned after leveling up. Since Generation III, they are learned while Pokémon levels up.

Unique moves
Some Pokémon have moves specific to themselves or their evolutionary line. These unique moves are known as signature moves. Some of these moves are powerful moves that only certain legendary Pokémon can learn, but other moves serve as "gimmicks" for novelty Pokémon. One example is Smeargle's Sketch, which allows it to learn almost every conceivable move.

In the anime
Moves in the anime often appear different to how they are depicted in the games. Ash's Pikachu often uses Agility as a physical attacking move, rather than a move that merely raises Speed. The almost limitless nature of the anime lends itself to many more differences between the games and anime in relation to Pokémon's moves. Pokémon are able to use many more moves outside of battle, such as Bulbasaur's Vine Whip. In battle, moves may be used in unorthodox manners, especially to overcome type disadvantage&mdash;perhaps best depicted with the battle between Ash's Pikachu and Blaine's Rhydon. Invented, Moves not in the Pokémon games have existed since the third episode, and custom-made moves have been prevalent in the Diamond & Pearl.

The process in which moves are learned is changed slightly; TMs and HMs do not seem to exist. Also, even though it's been stated in the anime that moves can be learned at certain levels, Pokémon seem to learn them more at random, and often out of sequence from the games. The term Move Tutor has never been used in the anime but there are several people in the anime that have taught Pokémon certain moves that they would not normally be able to learn. These people, such as Chaz and Clayton, are much like Move Tutors in the games except for the fact that they do not ask for anything in return. Even Ash has taught his Treecko Bullet Seed. Consequently, all moves learned by anime Pokémon appear to have been learned by level-up or by Move Tutor, including special Egg moves such as Volt Tackle.

Trivia
* During an in-game Double Battle, after a move is issued, if that Pokémon levels up before its in-battle turn and replaces the move currently awaiting execution with a new move, the new move will be used instead of the old one.
** Multiple turn moves such as Outrage will continue to be performed even if the move is deleted between turns. This can happen in both single and double battles.
* In some instances in the anime, certain Pokémon have shown to know more than just four moves at the same time, with as many as 10 being used in a single battle, and the concept of having to forget moves has never been mentioned.

Abilities (Japanese: とくせい special characteristic) are a game mechanic introduced in Generation III. Individual Pokémon may have only one of these special attributes at a time, which generally serve to assist them in battle. Prior to Generation VI, an Ability could not be changed after a Pokémon is obtained except by evolution, where the Ability it changes into is determined by the former Ability and form change. Not every Ability is beneficial; some will hinder the user.

Mechanics
Some species of Pokémon may have multiple Abilities. Pokémon caught in the wild will have one of two possible Abilities, and there is a 50% chance of encountering either. In terms of game data, these Abilities may be thought of as being stored in separate slots (i.e. Munna has Forewarn in the first slot and Synchronize in the second).

The only way a Pokémon can normally change its Ability is upon evolution. The "slot" storage system means that if an unevolved Pokémon has the "first" Ability for its species, it will have the "first" Ability of its evolved species upon reaching this stage, even if this Ability differs in the evolved species. In other words, a Poochyena with Run Away would evolve into a Mightyena with Intimidate, while a Poochyena with Quick Feet would evolve into a Mightyena with Quick Feet. If the unevolved Pokémon has only one Ability, but its evolution may have one of two Abilities, then it has a 50% chance of acquiring either Ability (dependent on its personality value). Generation VI introduced the In-battle effect item, which allows the user to change a Pokémon's Ability, under two conditions: the current Ability is not a Hidden Ability, and the species has two regular Abilities. It is consumed after use.

When Abilities were introduced in Generation III, some Pokémon only had one possible Ability. A number of these species were given a second Ability in Generation IV; upon transfer forward with Pal Park, a Pokémon affected by this change will keep its Generation III Ability unless it evolves, in which case the Ability will be recalculated.

Some abilities also have effects outside of battle.

Hidden Abilities
Beginning in Generation V, Pokémon without Hidden Abilities were given access to another Ability, referred to in-game as a Hidden Ability, if obtained under certain circumstances:
* Where possible, all Pokémon obtained from the Pokémon Global Link, either via the Pokémon Dream World or a Global Link promotion, will always have their Hidden Ability.
* Certain event Pokémon may have their Hidden Ability.
* Pokémon obtained from the Pokémon Dream Radar will have their respective Hidden Abilities.
* Two instances of Pokémon found in-game in (the five Darmanitan in the Desert Resort and the Musharna found every Friday in the Dreamyard) have their Hidden Ability.
* Pokémon found in 's Hidden Grottos will always have their Hidden Ability, as do certain other interactable Pokémon in the game.
* Horde Encounters may have a Pokémon with a Hidden Ability.
* Pokémon found in a Friend Safari have a small chance of having a Hidden Ability. That chance increases if the registered friend associated with the Safari is online.

If a female Pokémon has a Hidden Ability and is bred, it has a 60% chance of giving that Ability to each of its children. Each of the other Abilities has a 20% chance of being passed down. In Generation V, Hidden Abilities cannot be passed down from male or genderless Pokémon, or when breeding with Ditto. In Generation VI, this was changed so that male and genderless Pokémon have the chance to pass down their Hidden Ability only when bred with Ditto.

Abilities and breeding
The mechanics of which Ability is acquired upon hatching a Pokémon Egg (in instances when a hatched Pokémon may have one of two Abilities) varies from game to game. In all games up to and including HeartGold and SoulSilver, a Pokémon hatched from an Egg has a 50% chance of acquiring either Ability.

However, starting from Black and White, there is an 80% chance of the resulting offspring having the same "slotted" Ability as its mother and hence a 20% chance of the other Ability being passed down as long as the other parent is not Ditto. This might be a reference to Mitochondrial DNA which, in most species, is inherited solely from the mother.
In Pokémon Conquest
List of Abilities in Pokémon Conquest

While most Pokémon species in Pokémon Conquest have access to three Abilities (similar to the main series, Hidden Abilities included), many of these Abilities are different from the main series due to differences in the battle system. For example, Abilities like Cute Charm and Rivalry do not exist in Pokémon Conquest (due to the game's lack of a gender mechanic), while other Abilities utilize mechanics unique to Pokémon Conquest battles (like "Sprint", which increases the user's movement Range).

Like the main series, an individual Pokémon's Ability is dictated by its current species (i.e. evolutionary form) and may change during evolution. Unlike the main series, the individual Pokémon's Ability can also be changed at any time by taking it to a Mystery Spring.

In the anime
section
Abilities have been shown in the anime, but are usually only used in battles; however, sometimes they have an effect on the plot, such as Ash's Infernape's Blaze. At one point in Gotta Catch A Roggenrola!, Iris pointed out that Roggenrola had the Ability Sturdy, implying that Roggenrola would receive less damage than a Pokémon normally would. In Showdown At Linoone, a Linoone has the Ability Pickup and takes items to its private stash, including May's Poké Balls.

Abilities were shown to work differently in the anime than they would in the games, such as Mold Breaker where it would cancel out any Ability instead of the ones that would prevent the user from using any moves as seen in Shapes of Things to Come! where Roark activated it to stop Paul from activating Static. This was repeated again in O'er the Rampardos We Watched! but this time with Rampardos and Pikachu. Some Abilities were not to shown to be activated at all despite meeting their requirements such as Iron Barbs in Curtain Up, Unova League! when Ferrothorn was hit by Eelektross's Crush Claw, even though it was Ferrothorn's only Ability.

In the TCG
Abilities under the name of Abilities did not appear in the Trading Card Game until the Black & White expansion kicking off Generation V. However, this was merely a renaming of the longstanding Pokémon Powers. Pokémon Powers were very similar to Abilities, but were introduced much earlier, appearing in the very first Base Set during Generation I. In fact, some Abilities from the games originally appeared as Pokémon Powers.

With the introduction of the Expedition Base Set, Pokémon Powers were split into two groups: Poké-Powers and Poké-Bodies. Poké-Powers are special effects that the player must trigger or announce using. A Poké-Body's effect is a passive Ability that is always in effect. When Pokémon Powers became Abilities, these distinctions were done away with.

In the manga
In the Pokémon Adventures manga
Roxanne's Nosepass was the first Pokémon shown to have Magnet Pull in this manga. Abilities have been featured sometimes after this, mainly during battles.

Trivia
* The unused Ability Cacophony was included in the coding for third-generation games as Ability #076 (Air Lock was #077). From the fourth generation, Cacophony was removed and Air Lock was renumbered as #076, with the new Abilities positioned from #077 onward.
* As of Generation V, excluding Hidden Abilities, there are 106 Pokémon (almost exactly one-sixth of the total) who have unique Ability combinations.
:::::::Also, the apparent 50% chance of picking one ability or the other upon evolution appears to be determined at trade or import. I have a zigzagoon with pickup which I imported to Diamond from Sapphire, then traded to my current Soul Silver. I have a savegame with it at lvl 19 on the verge of evolution, in order to reset the game if it evolves with gluttony (I want pickup). EVERY TIME I level it up it evolves with gluttony, it's been 9 times now. It's definitely not 50/50 upon evolution. -DropShock 17:59, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
::::::::It's 50/50 if you haven't found out yet, but it'll always turn out the same. The ability is set as nr1 or nr2 from the moment you obtain it. If in genVI the nr2 ability is suddenly different than genIII (where it was the same as nr1 in such cases), the ability will correct after evolution if that's the case or stay if your poke has nr1.--Saiph charon 18:10, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
:I think we should keep the functionality things to categories, which I've only done for the weather ones. Numerically listed or alphabetically listed in a template is good, though. And you might be able to extract them by crossreferencing one of Zhen Lin's subpages on which Pokémon has which ability with a source that shows the names for the specific abilities a Pokémon has, since I dunno any other source that gives number and name at the same time. == Hidden Abilities? ==

There's a good deal of information on Hidden Abilities here, such as which Pokemon have which Hidden Abilities, but I haven't been able to find any information on what a Hidden Ability is or does anywhere, either on the wiki or via Google. I have a couple of hypotheses, but I don't have either of the Generation V games, and I'm not certain they exist in Gen IV. I also don't care to throw around wild conjecture because that's how rumors get started. If this information can be found, I think we should add it. VoidPointer 01:36, 12 December 2010 (UTC)

Passing From Males
I was breeding my male Torchic (with Speed Boost) with a Ditto in X and some of the offspring had Speed Boost, too! This is a new feature that they must have added in Generation VI, a huge change from Generation V. But I feel like this is such a big change that I should put it on the talk page first instead of just going ahead and adding it myself without permission. --<span style="color:green;">Zewis</span> <span style="color:blue;">(29)</span> 22:05, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
Ability Capsule?
It states, several times, in this article that "abilities cannot be changed" by means other than evolution, but now you can swap between a Pokémon's two possible abilities (if it has two possible abilities) with the Ability Capsule. --<span style="color:#00FF00" >G</span><span style="color:#00E800">i</span><span style="color:#00D800">o</span><span style="color:#00C800">k</span><span style="color:#00B800">u</span>talkuser 00:31, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
:Only if it has one of its regular (non-hidden) abilities and its species has two non-hidden abilities. This definitely should be in the article, though. --<span style="color:green;">Zewis</span> <span style="color:blue;">(29)</span> 18:57, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
::I meant non-hidden, maybe should've clarified that... But good to know that it does belong in the article. Thanks! --<span style="color:#00FF00" >G</span><span style="color:#00E800">i</span><span style="color:#00D800">o</span><span style="color:#00C800">k</span><span style="color:#00B800">u</span><sup>talk</sup><sub>user</sub> 00:03, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
Male with hidden ability breeding with Female with regular ability?
I saw this line in the article and thought it was ambiguous: Hidden Abilities cannot be passed down from male or genderless Pokémon, or when breeding with Ditto until Generation VI. But when I wanted to reword it, it occurred to me: Would it actually be possible for, say, a male Torchic with Speed Boost to breed with a female Torchic with Blaze and for them to produce an egg that has Speed Boost? Can someone confirm whether such a thing is possible or not?

If it is possible, then simply rewording that line to Until Generation VI, [...] would be fine. But if it's not, then I think the line should be changed more significantly, to (perhaps) Before Generation VI, Hidden Abilities could not be passed down when breeding with Ditto. Male Pokémon cannot pass down their Hidden Abilities unless bred with Ditto. Tiddlywinks (talk) 23:46, 10 November 2013 (UTC)
:In GenV, any Pokemon that wasn't female could never pass down a hidden Ability. A female Torchic with Blaze and a male Torchic with Speed Boost would always produce Torchics with Blaze. If it's reworded, seeing as there was only one generation with hidden Abilities before XY, perhaps 'In Generation V, [...]' might be better? Bluesun (talk) 07:19, 11 November 2013 (UTC)
::I'm quite clear on how Gen V worked, actually. I actually meant, in Gen VI, could, say, a Male Torchic with Speed Boost breeding with a female Torchic with Blaze produce an egg that has Speed Boost? That is what is unclear to me. (FYI: I do not have X/Y.) Tiddlywinks (talk) 14:40, 11 November 2013 (UTC)
