Magikarp is notable in the fact that it has no real special powers. Despite this however, people and scientists alike wonder how it can still survive in the wild. They are also capable of living in very polluted water.

Although this Pokémon is capable of surviving in even the most polluted ponds, it is usually overlooked by trainers because it is pathetically weak: even in the heat of battle it will do nothing but flop around. It is not a strong swimmer, and currents in the water will sweep it downstream. They are normally seen using {{m|Splash}}, which is unusual, as it makes them easy targets to predators. It is believed that the ancestors of this Pokémon were much stronger than the Magikarp seen today, and this belief has led scientists to research this species.

Groudon is modeled after the Earth's land, as shown by the rocky plates on its back. It is colored red, possibly a reference to its relation with volcanoes. Its body is modeled after a behemoth, a creature of legends and religious texts (particularly the Bible) that ruled the land. However, the behemoth is usually depicted as a warthog/hippopotamus-like creature; in the same way that {{p|Kyogre}} is not based on traditional depictions of the leviathan, Groudon's design may be based on lizards or various dinosaurs. It has red armor plating with a gray belly and spikes running from its head down to its tail.

* The markings on its hands resemble an M, as in [[Team Magma|Magma]]. It shares this characteristic with {{p|Kyogre}}.
* Groudon is the heaviest Pokémon in existence, being 500 pounds heavier than {{p|Giratina}}'s Another Forme.
* Groudon and its counterpart, {{p|Kyogre}}, are the only Pokémon to date with a [[catch rate]] of 5.
* Groudon shares the same [[species]] name as {{p|Torterra}}. They are both known as the Continent Pokémon.
* Groudon's gender is unkown in the main games but it is referred to as a male in [[Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2]].
*Groudon and {{p|Regigigas}} might have a connection. It states in the Regigigas's Pokédex entry that it once pulled the continents with rope, while Groudon is known as the Continent Pokémon. Also, both Pokémon are strongly connected to the land.
*Groudon is the only non {{type2|Fire}} [[Pokémon]] able to learn {{m|Fire Blast}} by level up.

===Origin===
Groudon is most likely based on the Hebrew legends of the {{wp|behemoth}}, the gigantic primeval master of all land creatures. Its counterpart was the {{wp|leviathan}}.

====Name origin====
Groudon's name appears to be a combination of ''ground'' and ''don'', which is Spanish for lord — hence, lord of the ground.
The suffix -don is also used in the names of many dinosaurs and large animals, and means "tooth". Groudon has large teeth, and also somewhat resembles a dinosaur.
Although possibly a coincidence, its name also includes 土 ''do'', ground.
