'''Pokésav''' is a program that edits [[Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Versions|Diamond, Pearl]], [[Pokémon Platinum Version|Platinum]], [[Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions|HeartGold and SoulSilver]] save files, developed by a Japanese programmer named COM. One version works with any Diamond or Pearl save file, and another works with Platinum, including those backed up from a commercial cartridge using a flashcart or a cheating device such as the Gameshark Duo. The application can also export [[Action Replay]] DS codes, which when activated will provide the same effects in-game as editing the save file.

With Pokésav, players can edit many aspects of the game including Pokémon, their movesets, the inventory, and in-game records. Because of this, many people consider it to be a "hacking" program used to gain an unfair advantage in competitive play. Creating a Pokémon of any caliber may only take a few minutes with the use of Pokésav, whereas it may take hours and hours to legitimately breed and train the same Pokémon. This brings up questions as to whether the use of the program is ethical.

To combat the usage of programs like Pokésav, Nintendo has banned the use of all Pokémon they determine to be "hacked" from online play. This includes such Pokémon with impossible movesets or abilities, such as a {{p|Spiritomb}} with {{a|Wonder Guard}} or a {{m|Recover}}ing {{p|Skarmory}}. However, sometimes Nintendo's servers cannot differentiate edited Pokémon from trained Pokémon, so these legitimate looking Pokémon are often let through.

When the early version of [[Pokémon HeartGold]] and [[Pokémon SoulSilver]]'s Pokésav was released, all was fine but sinnoh location names were in the program, making it difficult to set some values. This was later fixed.

The '''Action Replay''' is a hexadecimal-based cheating device brand made by {{wp|Datel}} that is used for games and systems of all kinds. It is not licensed or endorsed by any game or console manufacturer.

While the [[GameShark]] was the most widely used cheating device in the late 90s, it was actually a rebranded Action Replay. However, Interact, the company who distributed GameSharks, went bankrupt. After that, {{wp|Mad Catz}} bought the name GameShark, and Action Replays were then sold to the public by their original name.

==Use and function==
Cheating devices such as the Action Replay are primarily used to enable, disable, or modify sections of a particular game's code. By intercepting game code transmission between the game's software and the system's hardware, Action Replay devices can change the gaming experience. The use of cheating devices to modify Pokémon games has been a popular practice since the games' release in the mid-nineties. Popular applications of the device include capturing unobtainable Pokémon, acquiring normally unobtainable items or mass quantities of items, and modifying Pokémon stats.

Although Action Replay can be helpful, it is also known to freeze the game occasionally and to cause minor problems. Although codes that simply allow users to change Pokémon, levels, or stats tend to be harmless, others like Walk Through Walls or codes rewriting major events in the storyline may result in minor game glitches or corrupt the entire save file.

==Duo problem and Wi-fi problem==
In 2005, Datel released a new device for use with both the [[Nintendo]] [[Game Boy Advance]] and [[Nintendo DS]] called the {{wp|Action Replay Duo}} (also known as the Action Replay Max). This new device enabled users to modify GBA games like the ordinary Action Replay for GBA; however, it also had the ability to save DS games onto a computer using a USB cable. Using this method, users could backup and restore saved game files. However, the device does not recognize any Pokémon save data located in its slot, and has caused much outrage among fans for this reason. Despite numerous updates to the device, there has been no explanation given as to why the device ignores Pokémon games.

The '''Mystery Zone''' (Japanese: '''なぞのばしょ''' ''Mystery Place'') is an area in the [[Generation IV]] games that essentially serves as "filler space" between normally accessible outdoor and indoor areas. It exists all around Sinnoh, to facilitate the precise entry into [[the Underground]], which has tunnels that travel under areas where no routes or cities exist. No Pokémon are found in the area; the geography is made predominantly of trees, water, or blank void space. In {{game2|Diamond|Pearl|Platinum}}, the area is itself named as "Mystery Zone", with the location header popping up to display this name when the area is entered, while in {{game|HeartGold and SoulSilver|s}}, the area is named ----.

The menu cannot be opened, and the touchscreen menu cannot be used, however a registered [[key item]] can be used to refresh the graphics in the area at any time. In Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, the Mystery Zone's music is a slightly off-key version (and perhaps a beta mix of) of the theme of [[Route]]s {{rtn|206}}, {{rtn|207}}, {{rtn|208}}, and {{rtn|221}}. Sometimes, the background music used in [[the Underground]] can also be played, while in HeartGold and SoulSilver, it is the same theme as {{rt|29}}.

If the player passes through the side of a lobby (without entering it) between a route and a city, the city can become white in some areas including rooftops and the ground. However some areas, such as [[Amity Square]] have lobbies which transport the player to another location instead of a few tiles forward. This means the Mystery Zone cannot be used to take pokémon out of [[Amity Square]] while still behind the player.

When walking through mountainous terrain through the Mystery Zone, the player may become hidden by the terrain. The screen may also appear to zoom in as one enters the zone.
