They can be used during or outside of a {{pkmn|battle}} to restore a [[move]]'s {{PP}}. Unlike most items, a player can't buy them in any shop; instead, they can often be found on the ground, whether readily visible or hidden from sight and requiring an [[Itemfinder]] or the {{DL|Pokétch|Dowsing Machine}} [[Pokétch]] app to locate. Max Ethers may also be found by using {{m|Rock Smash}} in {{game|HeartGold and SoulSilver|s}}. '''Mulch''' (Japanese: '''こやし''' ''Fertilizer'') is a type of item introduced in [[Generation IV]]. There are four kinds of Mulch, each with a different effect.

Mulch is essentially a fertilizer, which may be used before planting {{Berries}} in [[loamy soil]]. They promote healthy Berry growth and have no use in {{pkmn|battle}} aside from being thrown with {{m|Fling}}, in which case the move will have 30 [[Power]].

If more than one Mulch is spread on one patch of soil, only the effect of the most recently used one will apply. According to the lady in the [[Berry Master]]'s house in Sinnoh, Mulch is made "by mixing high-grade soil with Pokémon...um...{{wp|Manure|you know}}..."

Mulch can be bought from the girl in the Berry Master's house on {{rt|208|Sinnoh}}, or in the [[Goldenrod City#Flower Shop|Goldenrod Flower Shop]] after acquiring the {{DL|List of key items in Generation IV|Berry Pots}}.

Due to the lack of [[loamy soil]] in the [[Unova]] region and the fact that the Berry Pots are not obtainable, Mulch became a valuable item in {{game|Black and White|s}}. In {{game|Black and White 2|s}}, Mulch can be sold to a [[Pokémon Breeder]] at the end of [[Mistralton City]]'s runway.

The '''fifth generation''' of Pokémon, known by fans due to its version names as the '''monochrome generation''', is the fifth installment of the Pokémon series. Like previous generations, the first installments, {{game|Black and White|s}}, were released as a pair. For the first time since [[Generation I|Generations I]] and [[Generation II|II]], the games were released on the same platform as all five of [[Generation IV|the previous generation]]'s main series titles, in this case the [[Nintendo DS]].

[[Unova]], the new [[region]] introduced in this generation, is known to be far away from the regions of previous generations. Unlike the past four, Unova is based on an area outside of {{wp|Japan}}, drawing inspiration from the {{wp|New York City metropolitan area}}.

The Generation V games are able to communicate with the five [[Generation IV]] games in the same way that the [[Generation III]] games can communicate with the Generation IV games, with players able to transfer Pokémon via a method similar to [[Pal Park]]. Pokémon caught in a Generation III game are able to move forward to Generation V by passing through Generation IV games.

Generation V occurs an unknown amount of time after [[Generation II]] and [[Generation IV]]. The {{tc|Team Rocket Grunt}} who stole the {{DL|List of key items in Generation IV|Machine Part}} makes a {{wp|cameo appearance}}, saying that while he had intended to revive Team Rocket upon returning home, he instead fell in love and had a son. [[Cynthia]] mentions visiting the [[Distortion World]] and being defeated by a {{ga|Lucas|young}} {{ga|Dawn|Trainer}} as Sinnoh League {{pkmn|Champion}}.

==Advances in gameplay==
Being the first games on the same console as their predecessors since [[Generation II]], the Generation V games enhance the Pokémon experience on the DS in several ways. Advancements introduced in Generation V include:
* The addition of 156 {{cat|Generation V Pokémon|new Pokémon}}, bringing the total to 649. No Pokémon from previous generations can be found in Unova itself until after the [[National Pokédex]] is obtained.
* The addition of 92 new [[move]]s, bringing the total to 559.

* Expanded variance in camera placement, making the cities and towns of Unova more realistic and lifelike. There are also curves in places like [[Castelia City]], [[Dragonspiral Tower]], and the [[Skyarrow Bridge]].
* The [[Poké Mart]] is now combined with the [[Pokémon Center]].
* Introduction of the [[Entralink]], which allows players to visit each other in-game, rather than just inside of the [[Union Room]] or [[the Underground]].
* The new [[Pokémon Global Link]], which allows players to connect their games to the internet to view statistics or download some changes to the games, such as the design of the [[Pokédex]]. This also grants players access to the [[Pokémon Dream World]], where players may befriend Pokémon and send them over to their games.

These animations are reminiscent of those of {{game|Crystal}}, rather than the two-sprite distortion method that has been the standard since {{game|Emerald}}. The speed at which Pokémon move slows as the {{stat|HP}} goes down and with [[status ailment]]s.
* The back sprites of Pokémon show the Pokémon's body in full, with their poses and animations being the same as the front sprite, but seen from behind.
* The battle music changes under certain conditions. When one of the player's Pokémon on the battlefield has less than 25% of their HP, the music changes to a faster, more suspenseful music. When battling a Gym Leader's last Pokémon, the music also changes.
* The overworld music also changes in certain circumstances. Almost all the routes now have instruments that differ between the seasons, and layers that activate and deactivate when the player walks or stops, respectively; while music that plays in some towns and cities have layers that can be added by talking to citizens. These people can be seen playing different musical instruments like piano, guitar, etc.

===Unova thematic motif===
The fifth generation of Pokémon games focuses on the relationships between opposites, such as nature and industry or humans and Pokémon. This comes from the concept of Yin and Yang, which the legendary mascots of {{game|Black and White|s}}, {{p|Reshiram}} and {{p|Zekrom}}, are based on, with another reference being that Reshiram is the mascot of Black and Zekrom being the mascot of White-- both are opposite colored to the game's color, while version mascots beforehand had always matched. The [[Musketeer trio]] also represent this theme as they are trying to prevent Pokémon from losing their natural habitats to human industry. The generation's main antagonists, [[Team Plasma]], also fit in with this theme, as their goal is to separate Pokémon from humans. Some of the cities also reflect this theme by being aesthetically different depending on the version of the game; two major examples of this are [[Black City]] and [[White Forest]], two version-exclusive locations. The {{pkmn|Dream World}}, which is supposed to combine dreams and reality, also fit into this theme.

* The Japanese logo of the Pokémon games was redesigned once again for Generation V's releases; the first logo was used in Generation I and [[Generation II]], and the second during [[Generation III]] and [[Generation IV]].

The '''Mew glitch''' is a software bug in all three of the [[Generation I]] [[Game Boy]] games, discovered in 2003.<ref>[http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Mew-glitch Nation Master - Encyclopedia: Mew glitch]</ref> This glitch is famous for allowing players to catch any non-glitched Pokémon in the game, most notably {{p|Mew}}. Method #3 of the Mew glitch allows one to catch both [[glitch Pokémon]] and regular Pokémon.

==Methods==
===Method #1===
To acquire Mew at the earliest point possible in the game, the player must not have defeated the {{tc|Swimmer}} in [[Cerulean Gym]] and the {{tc|Camper|Jr. Trainer}} (the one who says "I saw your feat from the grass" when the battle with him begins) on {{rt|24|Kanto}} in the grass. The player must defeat [[Nugget Bridge]] as usual.

Note that the player must have an {{p|Abra}} that can {{m|teleport}}, and therefore if playing {{v|Yellow}} must have reached {{rt|5|Kanto}} or traded for one previously.

The player first heals at the [[Cerulean City]] [[Pokémon Center]], so they may teleport there later. The player then needs to add an Abra to the [[party]] and go to Route 24. The player then needs to stand above the Jr. Trainer so that he is just off the screen. Then the player must move down until seen and immediately press the "START" button. The player then needs to use teleport with Abra. If done correctly, the Jr. Trainer should get the indicative exclamation mark while the player teleports. At this point, the [[menu]] will not work until the player battles, though it is imperative to not battle.

The player then needs to head east from the Pokémon Center into the [[Cerulean Gym]] and battle the Swimmer. After defeating the Swimmer (the menu should be available upon victory), the player then must head to Route 24, and after several steps the menu will appear. Upon closing of the menu, a battle will begin with a wild Mew.

====Method #1 (alternate method)====
The player must follow the steps for Method #1 exactly until after teleporting from the Jr. Trainer.
The player then must head north towards {{rt|25|Kanto}} and battle the {{tc|Youngster}}. As in Method #1, it is imperative to not battle before then. The player must engage in battle by being seen (and must walk along the wall to be seen, not towards him or the [[game freeze|game will freeze]]).

After defeating the Youngster, the player then needs to walk towards Cerulean City. After a certain amount of steps, the Start menu appears. Closing it should begin a battle against a wild Mew.

===Method #2===
For this method, the player needs to find any trainer in the game that will engage in battle the moment the trainer is on screen and the player is in the trainer's line of sight. The player then needs to take one step down closer to the NPC, but make sure that the NPC does not see the player, and then immediately press the "START" button. The menu will appear and the player will be able to {{m|Fly}} or {{m|Teleport}}. The player needs to fly or teleport to [[Cerulean City]]. While flying, the exclamation point that usually appears above a {{pkmn|Trainer}}'s head when they challenge the player to battle will appear. The player then needs to go to {{rt|24|Kanto}} and, defeat the Youngster that owns a {{p|Slowpoke}} (and must walk along the wall to be seen, not towards him or the [[game freeze|game will freeze]]). After defeating him, the player needs to fly or teleport to [[Lavender Town]] and head to {{rt|8|Kanto}}. The menu will appear. Pressing B will make a wild Mew appear at Level 7.

For this method, the player first needs a Pokémon with a {{stat|Special}} stat of 21. It doesn't matter if the stat was naturally leveled or boosted with {{EV|stat experience}}, as long as it's not due to an in-battle Special-stat boosting skill. The player needs to find any trainer in the game that will engage in battle the moment the trainer is on screen and the player is in the trainer's line of sight. The player then needs to take one step down closer to the NPC, but make sure that the NPC does not see the player, and then immediately press the "START" button. Once the player has pressed start and the menu appears, the player needs to {{m|fly}} or {{m|teleport}} elsewhere. The location being traveled to must have a path via which the player can walk both to a place where there are wild {{p|Ditto}} ({{rt|15|Kanto}}{{sup|RB}} or {{ka|Pokémon Mansion}}{{sup|Y}}) and after to a place with a trainer to fight. This is because the start button will no longer work until after a battle with a trainer (to be mentioned) because the game has been tricked into thinking it's in battle mode. Once the battle with the trainer the player picked was evaded successfully, the player then needs to battle any trainer, as long as there is one space between the player and the trainer when the battle is initiated so that the trainer has to walk up to the player. After defeating the trainer, the player needs to encounter a wild {{p|Ditto}}, and battle it until it uses {{m|Transform}} on the player's Pokémon with the Special Stat of 21. After defeating the Ditto (with any of the player's Pokémon), the player must not battle, and go back to the location where the trainer the player first evaded is located. Once the location is approached, the menu will automatically appear. The player must press the B button. A battle will begin with a wild {{p|Mew}}.

This method can be used to catch any Pokémon in the game, even some glitch Pokémon. While a Pokémon with a special stat of 21 will give one Mew, using a Pokémon with a different special stat will give the player a different Pokémon. For example, in the Red/Blue versions, if a Pokémon with a Special stat of 198 is used, [[LM4]] will appear instead of Mew. Some Special stats will cause [[glitch Trainer]]s to appear.

A Pokémon encountered using the Mew glitch is most commonly level 7. This is because as one Pokémon's {{stat|Special}} Stat corresponds to the [[index number]] of the Pokémon, the Pokémon's level also corresponds to the attack stage of the last encountered Pokémon. The attack stage is the variable which is changed when a stat-modifying move like {{m|Growl}} is used. 7 is the unchanged value, but will range from 1 to 13 depending on how many attack boosts or drops the opponent received. For example, if the player used {{m|Growl}} on the Pokémon six times, he or she could encounter a level 1 Pokémon. If the Ditto glitch is used and a [[glitch Trainer]] is encountered, the [[Trainer class]] will use a different team corresponding to the attack stage. ==Overview==
The glitch in fact works as follows: Any Trainer can be used for the first section, as long as the Trainer notices the player as soon as he/she enters the game screen, and that the player is walking towards them from either the top, left or right (walking from below will not work). Teleport and Fly (or [[Escape Rope]] and {{m|Dig}} if in a dungeon) can be used to trigger the glitch. For the Youngster, any Pokémon will do as long as it can be fought without walking up to a Trainer. To finish off the glitch, the player must return to the route of the Trainer evaded. The Pokémon that the player will find wild is dependent on the Special stat of the Pokémon the player last faced (wild or from the Trainer), and so using a Pokémon with the Special stat the player needs and finding a {{p|Ditto}} that transforms will produce an identical effect. The required Special stat for Mew is 21.

The storage feature is only available at the entrance of a dungeon, but not available in the midway point of a dungeon. Those are the opening words of Mystery Dungeon.

Then your partner comes over and wakes you up. You say you are a human and he panics, and says that you look like a normal Pokémon. He asks for your name, which you will tell him. No matter what name you choose, your partner will laugh at it.
Suddenly, a Butterfree will fly over and ask for your help to save her child, Caterpie, who has fallen into a fissure.
You and your partner will then need to complete a 4 floored dungeon.

On each floor you will find items. You can put them in the tool box by simply walking over them.
To progress through each floor you have to walk on the stairs and choose to proceed. The stairs are shown with a blue outline of a square on the map.

At the 4th floor you will find Caterpie. After you rescue it Butterfree will give you an [[Oran Berry]], a [[Pecha Berry]], and a [[Rawst Berry]].
Your partner will then show you to your home, you will be asked whether or not you want to form a rescue team. In order to progress, you have to answer yes.

The '''Pokémon Mansion''' (Japanese: '''ポケモンやしき''' ''Pokémon Mansion'') is a decrepit, burned-down mansion on [[Cinnabar Island]]. It got its name because a famous Pokémon Researcher once lived there.

To access the Cinnabar Island [[Gym]] in [[Generation I]] and [[Generation III]], the main character has to enter the mansion and find the [[List of key items in Generation I#Secret Key|Secret Key]] to unlock the door of the Gym.

The Pokémon Mansion has four different floors. Doors can be unlocked in the Mansion by pressing switches hidden in {{p|Mewtwo}} statues.

Amongst the rubble and wreckage is information that the scientists who once worked there obtained a {{p|Mew}} and impregnated it with the genetically altered {{p|Mewtwo}}, who destroyed the Mansion in its escape.

First, from 1F, the player must go upstairs. The player must not make the eye's of the [[Mewtwo (Pokémon)|Mewtwo]] glow. And then go East, and then make an immediate turn North, then East again. Head up the stair's. Then make the eye's of the [[Mewtwo (Pokémon)|Mewtwo]] glow. Then head East until the player can head South. Once the player heads South, go to the left balcony, and then go down. Now the player should head South causing another battle with a [[Pokémon Trainer|Trainer]]. Then, head East. And then make a slight North until the player comes across a stair. Go down the stairway. Keep going West until the player has to go North. Then head West until the player can go South. Make the eyes of the [[Mewtwo (Pokémon)|Mewtwo]] not glow. And then exit until the player can exit West. Then head North until the player can go East. Then go South until have to go East. Afterward go North, if the player goes in the middle the player will encourage a battle with another [[Pokémon Trainer|trainer]]. Then keep North until the player finds a switch. Make the [[Mewtwo (Pokémon)|Mewtwo]]'s eye's glow. Then go South then West until the player finds the Secret Key on the table. To exit, the player has to make the [[Mewtwo (Pokémon)|Mewtwo]] statue's eyes in the small room glow then exit out of the room. Now you should head South causing another battle with a [[Pokémon Trainer|Trainer]]. Then, head East. And then make a slight North until you come across a stair. Go down the stairway. Keep going West until you have to go North. Then head West until you can go South. Make the eyes of the [[Mewtwo (Pokémon)|Mewtwo]] not glow. And then exit until you can exit West. Then head North until you can go East. Then go South until have to go East. Afterward go North, if you go in the middle you will encourage a battle with another [[Pokémon Trainer|trainer]]. Then keep North until you find a switch. Make the [[Mewtwo (Pokémon)|Mewtwo]]'s eye's glow. Then go South then West until you find the Secret Key on the table. ==How to find the Secret Key==
First, from 1F, you must go upstairs. You must not make the eye's of the [[Mewtwo (Pokémon)]] glow. And then go East, and then make an immediate turn North, then East again. Head up the stair's. Then make the eye's of the [[Mewtwo (Pokémon)]] glow. Then head East until you can head South. Once you head South, go to the left balcony, and then go down. Now you should head South causing another battle with a Trainer. Then, head East. And then make a slight North until you come across a stair. Go down the stairway. Keep going West until you have to go North. Then head West until you can go South. Make the eyes of the [[Mewtwo (Pokémon)]] not glow. And then exit until you can exit West. Then head North until you can go East. Then go South until have to go East. Afterward go North, if you go in the middle you will encourage a battle with another trainer. Then keep North until you find a switch. Make the [[Mewtwo (Pokémon)]]'s eye's glow. Then go South then West until you find the Secret Key on the table. To exit, you have to make the [[Mewtwo (Pokémon)]] statue's eyes in the small room glow then exit out of the room. The '''Nintendo DS''' is [[Nintendo]]'s most recent addition to their handheld lineup. It was released in November 21, 2004 in North America and Japan, and March 11, 2005 in Europe.

Unlike previous Nintendo handhelds, it was not given the "Game Boy" moniker, likely because Nintendo did not want to tarnish the brand name if the system did not prove to be popular, as the earlier {{wp|Virtual Boy}} had not been. The system features a significant overhaul from previous Nintendo handhelds, most notably its use of ''two'' screens, rather than one, to display gameplay. The bottom screen is touch-sensitive, adding a new aspect to gameplay. In addition to this, it has improved sound functions, including two speakers instead of the lone speaker that appeared on Game Boy models, and a microphone.

Built into the DS is the ability to connect to the Internet using the {{wp|Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection}}. Many games have been released with specific features to utilize this capability, and while many do not, most games at the very least use the DS's internal DS-to-DS wireless connection. The DS is also compatible with [[Game Boy Advance]] games through its bottom slot, though compatibility for [[Game Boy]] and [[Game Boy Color]] games has been removed. Likewise, the multiplayer functions of GBA games are not supported.

The Nintendo DS was updated in the form of the [[Nintendo DS Lite]], a smaller model whose design borrows heavily from that of the [[Wii]]. The DS was further revised in the form of the [[Nintendo DSi]], the first DS update to include substantive differences, in 2009 (released 2008 in Japan).

As of September 2008, combined sales of Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite have reached more than 84 million units worldwide.
