Hareta first chose Piplup to battle an angry Onix which had Mitsumi. Since Hareta did not have a clue about Poké Balls, He attempted to open it by biting it. This resulted with Piplup stuck in Hareta's mouth which had angered it and refused to fight, telling Hareta that he should fight instead. The Onix, after it had seen this, calmed down. Later on, in Professor Rowan's lab, Piplup fled to the forest, only to find the same Onix enraged for an unknown reason. Hareta and a forest Pokémon fought against it, moving Piplup. Onix was eventually calmed down with Piplup's BubbleBeam.

During their stay at Jubilife City, Piplup was stolen by K-2 because it was a rare Pokémon. Once it was freed by Roark, Hareta had his very first battle, against the Gym Leader. After a Combination of Pound, Bide, and an Oran Berry, Hareta earned his first Gym badge.

Piplup later on helped Hareta catch a Shinx during his stay at Floaroma Town. Where it also battled against Mars's Pokémon during the invasion the Power Plant.

After winning 5 badges, they had arrived to Celestic Town, where they meet K-2 again after setting a bomb in the Celestic Ruins. Piplup used his Brine send the bomb rising in the air, where it exploded.

During Hareta's Confrontation with Cyrus, Piplup defeated his Weavile before being sent floating in the water by his Gyarados. Piplup was used during the battle at the Canalave Gym, before being sent by Byron to train in Iron Island.

At Iron Island, Hareta decided that he was relying to heavily on Piplup, so he decided to train without it. At Lake Valor, Piplup defeated Saturn's Rhyperior twice and alluded Cyrus's Gyarados's attacks. Piplup was used later on the battle against Mitsumi. It, along with Regigigas, had defeated Mitsumi's Electivire and Dusknoir were the only 2 Pokémon to be standing after the battle.

spoilers

After the battle, Cyrus had the building Self-destruct, with Hareta and Mitsumi still in the building. They were saved by Jun's Dragonite. However, Piplup was feeling sick and Mitsumi explained that before Hareta left for his journey, She attached an Everstone to Piplup, hoping that Hareta will learn faster with weaker Pokémon. She removed the Everstone, and Piplup immediately evolved into Prinplup and then into Empoleon. Since then, it has participated during the Spear Pillar battle and the one at the Pokémon League.
Volkner (Japanese: デンジ Denzi) is the Gym Leader of Sunyshore City's Gym, known officially as the Sunyshore Gym. He hands out the Beacon to Trainers who defeat him. He specializes in Electric Pokémon.

In the games
Volkner uses Electric Pokémon in his battles. Trainers who defeat him will receive the Beacon Badge, 57 and will be able to use Waterfall outside of battle. Volkner is friends with Flint, and has become dejected and depressed because no worthy challengers have come to Sunyshore in a while. He has been considering challenging the Elite Four and spends all his time renovating the Gym's electrical equipment, which puts a strain on Sunyshore's power supply and causes a blackout. Apparently, Volkner built the Gym's electrical gear traps completely out of boredom. When the player arrives in Sunyshore, Flint introduces them to Volkner, who agrees to hold off on challenging the Elite Four until after he battles the new challenger.

In Platinum, Volkner and Flint appear at the entrance to the Battle Frontier and have a double battle against the player and their Barry. He can later be fought, like the other Sinnoh Gym Leaders, at the Battleground.
Vista Lighthouse
:"... ... ...so you're the latest challenger up against the Sunyshore Gym...All right, I've decided! If I find you to be weak, I'm going to challenge the Pokémon League. I'm all done with renovating the Gym, so I don't need to be here. More than anything, I want to have battles that can thrill me again. As the toughest Gym Leader in Sinnoh, I'm going to unleash everything in my arsenal on you."

Sunyshore Gym
*Before battle
:"...all right, challenger. It's not often, but some Trainers manage to come and challenge me. But they've all been boring battles. I didn't break a sweat beating them. ...Sigh... I'm Volkner, the Gym Leader. They say I'm the top Gym Leader in Sinnoh, but... Anyway, I guess we'd better get this done. I hope you're the Trainer who'll make me remember how fun it is to battle!

*After the player takes any one of his Pokémon down to half HP
:"I get it! You guys are tough! But we can match your toughness!"

*After sending out last Pokémon
:"Here it comes! Get ready for my trump card!
:or
:"This is it! My trump card!"

*During battle
:"Shocking... I didn't see this coming!"

*When defeated
:"You've got me beat... Your desire and the noble way your Pokémon battled for you... I even felt thrilled during our match. That was a very good battle."

*After being defeated
:"...hehehe. Hahahah! ...That was the most fun I've had in a battle since...I don't know when! It's also made me excited to know you and your team will keep battling to greater heights! This is your eighth badge. You've earned this!"

:"That badge will allow you to use the hidden move Waterfall even when you're not in a battle. Waterfall happens to be key if you're going to the Pokémon league. Also, because you've collected all eight badges, any Pokémon at any level will now obey you without fail. I want you to take this too. What's inside that TM57 is the move Charge Beam. It may raise Special Attack if it lands. It's electrifying!"

*Post-battle
:"Your next step is the Pokémon League challenge. It's time for you to cross the sea and win your way through the gauntlet that is Victory Road. Demonstrate to the Pokémon League your mastery of your team. Against you, even the Elite Four will be pushed to fend off your challenge!"

*When defeated
:"Your toughness is something else. We were completely overwhelmed!"

* After being defeated
:"Hey! Don't burn out on us! Now you're just getting in the way." (to Flint)

:"Hahaha! That was a blast! Our combination came up short, but you're also a lot tougher as well. Promise me we'll do this again. I'll see to taking this husk home."
:"Hm? What's up? You do want to battle?" (if "No" is the first answer)

*During battle
:"You methodically corner me! Just like before!"

:"Winning makes me happy and losing leaves me angry... That's no great revelation, but it's what makes me stronger."

:"My Electivire is a force of nature to be reckoned with. No, don't get me started. I'll tell you another time."

:"When I got my first Gym Badge, I used the move Thunderbolt. Ever since, I've stuck with the Electric type even as I got better. I do it because I don't want to ever forget how happy I was when I won. Incidentally, Flint's fascination with the Fire type is only from his name. Someone told him that a flint is what's used to spark a fire, and that was it."

:"What's wrong? You're looking serious for a change." (to Flint)
:"Don't start! That will make my Gym stand out less." (to Flint)

:"My relationship to Flint? There's no love lost, that's for sure."

Volkner was first referred to by Tower Tycoon Palmer in Challenging a Towering Figure!, saying that, after seeing his battling skills, Ash would be able to give Volkner "a shock."

Volkner was also mentioned in DP163, as both Paul and Barry had 'earned' a Beacon from him. While Barry was happy with his encounter with Volkner, Paul was disgusted by him and called him the weakest Gym Leader by far as it emerged that Volkner was, rather than making a Trainer battle for a badge, just giving them away to Trainers, similar to Daisy, Violet and Lily. Volkner is set to appear in person DP165 with Flint and will also appear in DP166.

After Team Galactic capture the Lake trio and defeat Candice, Maylene, and Platinum, Candice and Maylene demand that Byron send someone strong to train them. Because Byron is occupied with protecting Professor Rowan and Mr. Berlitz, he briefly considers sending Roark, but realizes that Roark will not be strong enough and tries to call Volkner instead.

The call initially does not go through because Sunyshore City is in the middle of a blackout caused by Volkner's gym renovations. Volkner, depressed that Pokémon battles have become boring as a result of few strong opponents challenging him, elects to leave the gym when Byron's call gets through.

When Volkner meets Platinum and the two female Gym Leaders, he initially mistakes Platinum as another Gym Leader, indicating that he is quite distant from his colleagues. He attacks them and leaves immediately, as none of them appear strong enough to interest him. Platinum's sincere declaration asking him to train her interests Volkner enough for him to send out his Electivire to battle her. Once she defeats him, he awards her the Beacon Badge.
Trivia
* Volkner's Japanese Leader title is かがやき しびれさせる スター.
* All of Volkner's Diamond and Pearl Pokémon are Pokémon that have gender differences.
* Two of Volkner's Pokémon in Diamond and Pearl are not of his chosen type, Electric (Ambipom is a Normal and Octillery is a Water).
**However, each of these Pokémon knows one Electric-type move (Shock Wave and Charge Beam respectively). This changed in Platinum when Ambipom and Octillery are replaced by Jolteon and Electivire.
* Volkner's Electivire is the only Pokémon of a Gym Leader to use seals in Platinum. Coincidentally, it is used in the double battle with Flint, who uses his Magmortar, the only Pokémon of a member of the Elite Four to have seals.
* To follow the pattern of every Electric-type Gym Leader's military-style clothing, Volkner wears a military uniform similar to that of the dress uniform of Turkish troops.
* Volkner is the only Sinnoh Gym Leader to not have any Pokémon with more than one type in Diamond and Pearl.
* Volkner is the only Electric-type Gym Leader to not use a Voltorb or Electrode.
* Volkner being bored with weak trainers and few challengers can also be seen in Drake, leader of the Orange League, who had the same feeling, except Drake wasn't just letting challengers take the Winner's Trophy without battling.
