Characteristics
The Dragon-type is statistically the best of all types overall. Because of the minimal amount of weaknesses that they have, they often find a way onto trainers' teams. The downside to the supposed power that they have is that they are slightly harder to raise, with many of them not evolving from their first stage to their second until a level at which many Pokémon are near their final evolutions, and their final evolution near level 50. Most Dragon-type Pokémon have high Attack and Special Attack, and paired with their incredibly diverse movepools, they are one of the best in the games.

The Dragon-type is good offensively. Even though only Dragons themselves are Dragon-weak, the only type that resists Dragon is Steel, giving them good use of their STAB. Dragon/Fire, a common attacking combination among Dragons, is resisted together only by Heatran. Dragon Dance is also a very common move for physical sweepers.

Defensively, they have key resistances to Electric, Grass, Water and Fire, enabling them to block certain Pokémon. However, every fully-evolved, non-legendary Dragon-type except Kingdra has a double weakness to Ice moves, due to their secondary types.

As of Generation IV, all fully-evolved Dragon-types also have a secondary type.

When used in contests, Dragon-type moves typically become Cool moves, but some may be Smart or Tough moves.

In total, there are nineteen Pokémon with the Dragon-type, one more than the Ghost, thus making it the Pokémon type with the second fewest number of Pokémon.
Trivia
* In Generation I, there was only one Dragon-type attack, Dragon Rage; but because it always deals 40 HP of damage, there was no way to do variable Dragon-type damage. There is speculation that this is the reason that Gyarados is not part Dragon-type.
** Also, Dratini's family were the only Dragon Pokémon of Generation I
* It has been speculated that if Eevee receives another evolution in a future game, it would be Dragon, being the only formerly all-special type left that Eevee has yet to evolve into.
** If it followed the pure-type pattern of the other Eeveelutions, this would make it the only pure fully-evolved Dragon-type Pokémon so far.
* There are only eleven Dragon-type moves, the fewest of any type.
** Eight of those eleven moves are Cool moves in Contests. The only three that aren't are new in Generation IV, meaning that in Hoenn Contests, all Dragon-type moves were Cool moves.
** The Dragon-type also has the fewest number of non-damaging moves out of all of the types, with only one, Dragon Dance.
* Even though the Dragon-type has always been considered nearly legendary, no actual Dragon-type legendaries were introduced until Generation III's Latios, Latias, and Rayquaza.
* The Dragon-type resists moves of the primary types of all main series starter Pokémon available for players, including Pikachu.
* The Dragon-type is one of the two types that are weak to their own moves, together with the Ghost.
* Even though dragons are known in real-life legends as fire-breathers, there is yet to be a dual-type Fire/Dragon or Dragon/Fire Pokémon, though most Dragon-types can use Fire-type moves.
* The Dragon-type has the dubious honor of being one of three types that will never be doubly super effective against any Pokémon, as it is only super effective against one type. It shares this trait with the Poison which is only super effective against Grasss, and the Normal, which isn't super effective against anything.
** By the same manner, the Dragon-type is also the only type that will never be doubly resisted by anything, as only Steel resists it.
* Charizard, Gyarados, Aerodactyl and Sceptile are often considered to be dragons due to their appearance, egg group, movepool and use by in-game trainers as dragons. However, they are not Dragon-types.
* The final evolutions of all pure Dragon-type Pokémon are pseudo-legendaries.
* The Dragon-type is statistically the best type, as its average fully evolved stat never goes below base 95.
* All pure Dragon-type Pokémon have a different ability from their final evolution; Dratini and Dragonair have Shed Skin, whereas Dragonite has Inner Focus, and Bagon and Shelgon have Rock Head, whereas Salamence has Intimidate.
* Only four Dragon-type Pokémon are neither legendary nor part of a pseudo-legendary's family; all of them evolve from non-Dragon-type Pokémon.
* Not counting numerous legendary Pokémon, the only dual-type Dragon Pokémon that does not sport a double weakness to the Ice is Kingdra.
** Most of these legendary Dragons don't have any weakness to the Ice-type at all. In fact, only three dual-type Dragon Pokémon have a normal weakness to the Ice-type: Latias, Latios, and Giratina.
*** Interestingly, they are all weak to Dark and Ghost because of their other type.
* Dragon-type is also unique in the fact that they can all learn Draco Meteor by move tutor, and are the only type that can learn it at all (excluding Jirachi and Smeargle).
* Almost half (9) of all Dragon type Pokémon were introduced in Generation III.
* All fully evolved or legendary Dragon-type Pokémon have either a x4 resistance or immunity.

Pseudo-legendary is a term commonly used to refer to any Pokémon that has a three-stage evolution line, two types, as well as a base stat total of 600. The term originates from the Greek verb Pseudo, which means to lie. Pseudo-legendaries are more powerful than many other non-legendary Pokémon, if only for their base stats, and in particular, have an outstanding Attack stat. Since the pseudo-legendaries are very powerful, they are commonly used by many Trainers in their teams. Three of the five pseudo-legendaries Pokémon are Dragon.

List of pseudo-legendaries
There are five Pokémon considered to be pseudo-legendaries. The following shows the pseudo-legendaries, their types, and the Pokémon they evolve from. Dratini's evolution line actually appears in legends.

Characteristics
With the exception of Garchomp's evolution family, the pseudo-legendaries are usually situated next to the legendary trios in the Pokédexes of their respective Generations. In both the National Pokédex and Johto Pokédex, the evolutionary lines of Dragonite and Tyranitar are located just after the legendary trio and before the Ubers of their respective generation (they are located next to each other in the Johto Pokédex). Similarly, the Salamence and Metagross lines are located next to each other right before the legendary golems in both the National Pokédex and Hoenn Pokédex. Oddly, this tradition was not upheld in the fourth generation, as the Garchomp evolution line is situated next to no notable Pokémon.

Besides Metagross, the pseudo-legendaries have a double weakness to one type: in the case of Dragonite, Salamence, and Garchomp the double weakness is to Ice moves, while Tyranitar has a double weakness to Fighting moves.

All of the pseudo-legendaries also have an immunity to one type. For Dragonite and Salamence it is Ground, for Tyranitar it is Psychic, for Metagross it is Poison, and for Garchomp it is Electric.

In the games
These Pokémon are used in-game almost exclusively by the final members of the Elite Four and Champions. Dragonite is used by Lance, the final Elite Four member in Generation I and FireRed and LeafGreen; it is used again by Lance as the Champion in Generation II and HeartGold and SoulSilver. Tyranitar is also used by Lance in Pokémon Stadium 2 (both Round 1 and 2), as well as by Blue, the Champion, but only in the second round of the Elite Four in FireRed and LeafGreen. Salamence is used by Drake, the final Elite Four member in . Metagross is used by Steven Stone, the Champion in Ruby and Sapphire, and ex-Champion in Emerald. Garchomp is used by Cynthia, the Champion in . In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Lance uses a Dragonite, but when he is battled again, he will replace two of his three Dragonite with the two other Dragon Pseudo-legendaries, Salamence and Garchomp. This means that all Pseudo-legendaries have been used by a Champion at least once.

Pseudo-legendaries are obtainable in the wild strictly in their first form for the first two games of their generation. However, Dragonair is obtainable in the wild in most games where Dratini is (all but ). Likewise, Pupitar is available in the wild in Crystal. Gabite is also found in Victory Road in Platinum.

Pokémon Colosseum
In story mode, Shadow Metagross is used by Nascour and Shadow Tyranitar is used by Evice; it is notable that the two Cipher leaders have positions comparable to those of the final Elite Four member and Champion, respectively. complemented the list of pseudo-legendaries as of Generation III by featuring Shadow Salamence (used by Eldes) and Shadow Dragonite (used by Miror B.). Another commonality is that all four pseudo-legendaries have Shadow Rush as one of their Shadow Moves.

In the anime
All the pseudo-legendaries have appeared in the anime.
*Dragonite debuted as a silhouette in Mystery at the Lighthouse, but appeared physically in Mewtwo Strikes Back.
:*Dragonite has also appeared belonging to Drake and Lance, both regional champions.
:*Dratini debuted as a legendary in Legend of Dratini, as well as Dragonair.
*Vicious debuted in Celebi: Voice of the Forest.
*Salamence debuted in Jirachi: Wish Maker.
*Metagross debuted in Destiny Deoxys.
*Garchomp first appeared belonging to Cynthia in Top-Down Training!.
:*Cynthia's Garchomp also appeared in the opening of Arceus and the Jewel of Life, meaning that all pseudo-legendary Pokémon have also appeared in a movie.

Trivia
* Metagross is the only genderless pseudo-legendary, and the only pseudo-legendary that does not appear to be based on a reptile; rather, it is a robotic life form.
** This is probably why Metagross is the only psuedo-legendary not to be used by Lance in any game, as he prefers Dragons and Dragon-like Pokémon.
** Also, Garchomp is the only pseudo-legendary to have gender differences.
* All pseudo-legendaries that existed at the time were available in either Pokémon Colosseum or XD. Tyranitar is available in both games: by either snagging it from Cipher Head Evice in Colosseum or trading a Trapinch for a Larvitar from Duking in XD.
* Although pseudo-legendaries are used almost exclusively by the final members of the Elite Four and Champions, there are two minor exceptions in Diamond: a male Trainer on Route 229 uses Salamence, and a female Trainer on Route 224 has Metagross, serving as cameo appearances for the movie characters Butler and Rebecca, who used these pseudo-legendaries in their respective movies. Another trainer outside of Stark Mountain uses a Dragonite, but this trainer is not related to any movies.
* Each pseudo-legendary family has at least one blue-colored member.
* Among Pokémon commonly mistaken for pseudo-legendaries are Slaking, Flygon, and Aggron. For one reason or another, these Pokémon do not fit the criteria of those above and so are not pseudo-legendaries.
** Slaking, though not a pseudo-legendary, has the highest base stats of all non-legendary Pokémon and one immunity, to the Ghost-type. However, it lacks two types, a double weakness and a base-stat total of 600. Slaking is also crippled by its ability, Truant, only allowing it to attack half of the time.
* Tyranitar is the only pseudo-legendary that is completely unable to be used in tournaments due to the level 50 cap; Salamence, Metagross, and Garchomp all evolve at or right before level 50, and Dragonite evolves at level 55 like Tyranitar, but was also released in an event at level 50, and is tournament legal in this form.
* In Israel, pseudo-legendary Pokémon used to be called "Half Legendary" Pokémon amongst Pokémon fans.
* Tyranitar is the only pseudo-legendary that has a unique type combination.
* Ash is the first main character in the anime to own a member of a pseudo-legendary family.
* Metagross's evolutionary line is the only pseudo-legendary that can't be caught in the wild in the generation it debuted in.
Can moves like Endure or items like the Focus Sash keep a Pokémon which doesn't have the Sturdy ability from being knocked out if a OHKO move hits it? Interesting. I was going off an official Nintendo strategy guide from Red/Blue. It said Gary in every instance. I said early because in a yellow version one I used to have it no longer said Gary and switched to either Blue or Rival, can't remember which. But if in the actual manuals it's not mentioned, then it should probably be taken out. --greengiant
The anime came out before the games by about a month in the US, so that may be why they chose to use "Ash" and "Gary" -- or even because they knew kids would be used to the anime regardless of when it came out. --Meowth346
Jolteon: Win battles 1 and 2
:It's Blue, not Gary. And we've changed the sprites for his Final Confrontation as Champion for RB. Originally, his RB sprite was used for the yellow tables, because neither Bulbapedia, nor anywhere else on the internet, or so it seems, has the yellow trainer sprites. So I'm ripping them and uploading them as I go. But that means it will take me a bit of time to get to the Championship battle in Yellow, so I'll upload it when I get there (I'm currently at Bill's House in Yellow, but I'm speedplaying).
Champion
This article claims "It is a mystery who Blue's predecessor as Champion was." however, isn't it supposed to be a twist that Blue is the Champion and the player is expecting themselves to be the Champion after beating Lance? Also, I'm sure Lance implies that Blue is the first person to defeat the Elite Four... so surely we are to believe that Blue did not have a predecessor as Champion?
:I agree. It was only by second generation that "Champion" became a title for a standard character, who remains champion for good (though I guess Daigo got ousted by Mikuri, but we'll let that one slide...). The original games imply that beating Wataru makes the player the champion. I quote: "Congratulations, [player], you are now the new Champion! ...Or, you would have been, ...etc." RGBY imply that one only needs to beat the Four Heavenly Kings to become the Pokémon League Champion, but from GSC on, the current Champion was a role that was expected to be faced after the Shitenno. In a way, they (the game designers) decided that the Lord of the Four Heavenly Kings (in myth, the Shitenno always serve a master) was as much an important role so it really becomes more like 5 elite trainers, though I guess they are supposed to serve whoever is the current greatest. The fact the Champion stays on until you decide to not challenge the Shitenno any more and move on to the next game (after which you, the player, truly is the champion, as we see that Red was Champion during the years between RGBY and GSC), the role of Champion seems more like the game designers didn't know what they were going to do with it from then on. Wataru's sudden appearance as the Champion is somewhat of a twist too; if he's a wandering trainer and no longer a member of the Shitenno, it's a surprise that he's the champion. Similarly Daigo, Mikuri, and Shirona all have plot-related roles, and thus are the surprise ending Champions. But at the time of RGBY, they didn't really know they would be using these non-rival Champions, so we can't really say that there had to have been a Champion before Green. Blue and Red have been rivals ever since they were babies.<!----> Before leaving for his journey, he lived in Pallet Town, just like Red.

The player first meets Blue at Professor Oak's lab, where he and Red were asked to come. Oak offers the two of them one Pokémon each, with Red having first choice from Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Charmander. After Red chooses a Pokémon, Blue chooses the one with a type advantage over Red's. He then brags that his Pokémon looks much stronger. When Red is about to leave, Blue challenges him to a battle. Whatever the outcome, Blue declares his intention to train his Pokémon, and leaves.

Soon, Professor Oak calls the two of them back to give them Pokédexes, and tells them of his dream to categorize all Pokémon in the world with their help. Blue says he can do it by himself, and tells his sister, Daisy, not to give Red a Town Map (she does so anyway, not acknowledging his words).

...

It isn't until they meet up again in Lavender Town's Pokémon Tower that Blue's initial choice affects the rest of his team, where he switches out his Raticate and switches in Pokémon of the two types he didn't initially choose (Exeggcute, Gyarados, and Growlithe for Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Charmander), bringing a sort of type balance to his team.

...

After beating the Elite Four, Red finds out from Lance that Blue was one step ahead of him, and is now the Champion. He proceeds into the final battle room to find Blue visibly more mature and with all of his Pokémon in their final evolutions, and he claims that his team could beat any type. Blue brags that he is the most powerful trainer in the world, and the battle starts.
Shouldn't his name be Green?
Well, the reason why we seem to call him Blue is because of the US Pokemon Red & Blue versions of course. That's probably because in Pokemon Red, the default name for your rival is Blue, and that's his name in G/S/C.

But were in Gen IV now, so shouldn't his name be Green? Since LeafGreen version was not renamed WaterBlue or something in the US, and according to FireRed version, the default name for your rival is Green.

Also, wtf is the female player of FR/LG being called Leaf? And since when was the HG/SS named Soul? And since when was the D/P/Pt rival named Pearl? I already know the answer: they never had those names :/. --Chaos Rush 00:38:19 (UTC)
:At the moment we are waiting for HGSS, where Blue/Green will be an NPC, rather than a rival, to see what his name is. Until then it was decided above that he will be Blue, as that was his only NPC appearance where the player does not name him.
:The female player character for FR/LG is called "Leaf", because that is what she is named if you cancel out of the naming screen without putting a name in the first version (i.e. Fire Red). Soul is currently called such based on Leaf (prefix of second version), but may change when HGSS comes out.
:Pearl is called such for the same reason as Leaf - that is what is given if you cancel out of the name entry screen in Diamond.
:Ask an admin for the official policy, but it appears to be that if they are never an NPC that is not named by the player, then they are named with whatever name it gives them if you enter a blank name - essentially the game's defaults. Why were his GSC/HGSS templates recolored? I mean, all his other templates are perfectly OK, with the blue head color, current version border colors and stuff. May I ask why the color change? ::::::The only reason they'd laugh at us is because we have a canonical conundrum (actually, I'd think they'd rather feel sorry we're even in this situation) that won't be solved easily (why would the Japanese have this issue? It's not theirs). Which Japanese is the top canon, "Green" is not English canon (yet). You're reasoning he's "only Blue because..." verifies that, for the time being, yes he is Blue in English canon. That's top par. And if HGSS carries over the "Blue" issue, you people will still argue, "But he's Green over there!" But he's not Green here. And if HGSS does have Green, it will be changed, because that's apparently how it's done (why Jackson is Vincent despite being Jackson first).
::::::And yet, we've recently tucked in out pants to put the Special manga into its English roots. Which meant, yes, changing the Green character into Blue (as is English canon, despite the issue with their eye colors that makes) and vice versa. We support English canon for our frontyard (meaning it will always be the face of Bulbapedia: English language denotions) and use Japanese canon to support what is needed to be supported (as it is true canon). But since names are changes from Japanese ones to English ones, proper names are not infallible, nor are taken as "correct" over the English ones. :Clearly it's not brown though. That's the whole point. I guess we should go to Misty's page and say it's just a bright shade of brown. And if it were stated somewhere his hair was brown, I wouldn't even try to change it. I'm not an idiot, I just happen to know something about redheads. Misty's hair looks pretty brown in her battle sprites too, does that mean her hair's brown. In artwork and in his profile it's orange, so because his battle sprites have slightly more brown hair you wanna call it brown. Quit avoiding the blatant fact he has a redhead tone of hair people. Also, if for example a room full of people told you Pikachu wasn't yellow, would that mean it was true? No, because it's obvious. Getsuei 05:34, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
::What's funny about you comparing Misty and Blue, is that the dark parts of her hair are as dark as the light parts of his hair. :The point is that people who are brunettes do not have orange in their hair naturally speaking. If you have orange in your hair you are a redhead. I'm a redhead, I know the facts about redheads. Burnt Orange, Orange Brown, whatever. The point is his hair isn't brown, it's clearly a shade of orange. Go to Princess Daisy's page on the mariowiki. You people probably think she's a brunette, but you're wrong. Her hair just happens to range in shades of dark and bright orange. Even stated by Nintendo her hair is orange. The point is you people are avoiding the fact that just because his hair isn't a blatant bright orange color, that he is not a brunette and his hair is not classifiable as brown. If you all really want to be so stubborn as to avoid something so obvious, fine. It's obvious if I could edit this page some moron would revert my edit anyway. Also, nice job responding to someone with flames when I didn't even act rude or "bitchy" in the first place. Now though, you people can decide on this situation for yourselves.
