==Characteristics==
The Dragon-type is statistically the best of all types overall. Because of the minimal amount of weaknesses that they have, they often find a way onto trainers' [[party|teams]]. The downside to the supposed power that they have is that they are slightly harder to raise, with many of them not evolving from their first stage to their second until a [[level]] at which many Pokémon are near their final evolutions, and their final evolution near level 50. Most Dragon-type [[Pokémon]] have high [[Stats#Attack|Attack]] and [[Stats#Special Attack|Special Attack]], and paired with their incredibly diverse movepools, they are one of the best in the games.

The Dragon-type is good offensively. Even though only Dragons themselves are Dragon-weak, the only type that resists Dragon is Steel, giving them good use of their STAB. Dragon/Fire, a common attacking combination among Dragons, is resisted together only by {{p|Heatran}}. {{m|Dragon Dance}} is also a very common move for physical sweepers.

Defensively, they have key resistances to Electric, Grass, Water and Fire, enabling them to block certain Pokémon. However, every fully-[[Evolution|evolved]], non-[[Legendary Pokémon|legendary]] Dragon-type except {{p|Kingdra}} has a double weakness to {{type2|Ice}} moves, due to their secondary [[types]].

As of [[Generation IV]], all fully-evolved Dragon-types also have a secondary type.

When used in contests, Dragon-type moves typically become [[Cool Contest|Cool]] moves, but some may be [[Smart Contest|Smart]] or [[Tough Contest|Tough]] moves.

In total, there are nineteen Pokémon with the Dragon-type, one more than the {{type2|Ghost}}, thus making it the Pokémon type with the second fewest number of Pokémon.

With the exception of {{p|Garchomp}}'s evolution family, the pseudo-legendaries are usually situated next to the [[legendary trio]]s in the [[Pokédex]]es of their respective [[Generation]]s. In both the [[National Pokédex]] and [[List of Pokémon by Johto Pokédex number|Johto Pokédex]], the evolutionary lines of {{p|Dragonite}} and {{p|Tyranitar}} are located just after the [[legendary trio]] and before the [[List of tiers#Uber|Ubers]] of their respective generation (they are located next to each other in the Johto Pokédex). Similarly, the {{p|Salamence}} and {{p|Metagross}} lines are located next to each other right before the [[legendary golems]] in both the National Pokédex and [[List of Pokémon by Hoenn Pokédex number|Hoenn Pokédex]]. Oddly, this tradition was not upheld in the [[Generation IV|fourth generation]], as the {{p|Garchomp}} [[evolution]] line is situated next to no notable Pokémon.

Besides {{p|Metagross}}, the pseudo-legendaries have a double weakness to one type: in the case of {{p|Dragonite}}, {{p|Salamence}}, and {{p|Garchomp}} the double weakness is to {{type2|Ice}} moves, while {{p|Tyranitar}} has a double weakness to {{type2|Fighting}} moves.

All of the pseudo-legendaries also have an immunity to one type. For {{p|Dragonite}} and {{p|Salamence}} it is {{type2|Ground}}, for {{p|Tyranitar}} it is {{type2|Psychic}}, for {{p|Metagross}} it is {{type2|Poison}}, and for {{p|Garchomp}} it is {{type2|Electric}}.

These Pokémon are used in-game almost exclusively by the final members of the [[Elite Four]] and [[Champion]]s. {{p|Dragonite}} is used by [[Lance]], the final Elite Four member in [[Generation I]] and {{v2|FireRed and LeafGreen|s}}; it is used again by Lance as the Champion in [[Generation II]] and {{v2|HeartGold and SoulSilver|s}}. {{p|Tyranitar}} is also used by Lance in [[Pokémon Stadium 2]] (both Round 1 and 2), as well as by {{ga|Blue}}, the Champion, but only in the second round of the Elite Four in FireRed and LeafGreen. {{p|Salamence}} is used by {{EF|Drake}}, the final Elite Four member in {{3v2|Ruby|Sapphire|Emerald}}. {{p|Metagross}} is used by [[Steven Stone]], the Champion in Ruby and Sapphire, and ex-Champion in Emerald. {{p|Garchomp}} is used by [[Cynthia]], the Champion in {{3v2|Diamond|Pearl|Platinum}}. Pseudo-legendaries are obtainable in the wild strictly in their first form for the first two games of their generation. Interesting. I was going off an official Nintendo strategy guide from Red/Blue. It said Gary in every instance. I said early because in a yellow version one I used to have it no longer said Gary and switched to either Blue or Rival, can't remember which. This article claims "It is a mystery who Blue's predecessor as Champion was." however, isn't it supposed to be a twist that Blue is the Champion and the player is expecting themselves to be the Champion after beating Lance? Also, I'm sure Lance implies that Blue is the first person to defeat the Elite Four... so surely we are to believe that Blue did not have a predecessor as Champion?
:I agree. It was only by second generation that "Champion" became a title for a standard character, who remains champion for good (though I guess Daigo got ousted by Mikuri, but we'll let that one slide...). The original games imply that beating Wataru makes the player the champion. I quote: "Congratulations, [player], you are now the new Champion! ...Or, you would have been, ...etc." RGBY imply that one only needs to beat the Four Heavenly Kings to become the Pokémon League Champion, but from GSC on, the current Champion was a role that was expected to be faced after the Shitenno. In a way, they (the game designers) decided that the Lord of the Four Heavenly Kings (in myth, the Shitenno always serve a master) was as much an important role so it really becomes more like 5 elite trainers, though I guess they are supposed to serve whoever is the current greatest. The fact the Champion stays on until you decide to not challenge the Shitenno any more and move on to the next game (after which you, the player, truly is the champion, as we see that Red was Champion during the years between RGBY and GSC), the role of Champion seems more like the game designers didn't know what they were going to do with it from then on. Wataru's sudden appearance as the Champion is somewhat of a twist too; if he's a wandering trainer and no longer a member of the Shitenno, it's a surprise that he's the champion. Similarly Daigo, Mikuri, and Shirona all have plot-related roles, and thus are the surprise ending Champions. But at the time of RGBY, they didn't really know they would be using these non-rival Champions, so we can't really say that there had to have been a Champion before Green.
