Ash's dedication to his goal paid off over time, and after earning his first eight badges, he competed in the [[Indigo League]], and advanced further in the rounds than Gary, making it to Round Five while Gary lost his fourth round. After recovering from his defeat, he continued on to improve his skill, take on new challenges, and compete in more {{g|League}} competitions, triumphing in the [[Orange League]] and the [[Battle Frontier]].

Ash has changed a great deal over the course of the series, particularly in regards to his skill at {{g|training}}, but his earnestness and determination have remained. Never straying from his goal, he has remained loyal to his friends, his family, and his supporters, but most of all his Pokémon. Ash became a great Trainer by learning to find and use the inner strength of each of his Pokémon by bonding with them and learning where their hidden abilities lie, as well as resorting to unorthodox strategies when fighting particularly challenging opponents. For example, he uses his Pikachu's speed to outmaneuver larger foes and attack, and defeated [[Gary's Blastoise]] with his {{AP|Charizard}} by causing the field to overheat and have Charizard mount a close-range attack while Blastoise was blinded by the steam. He also prefers to train a Pokémon to be the best it can without making it evolve, and he is hesitant to let his Pokémon evolve to get stronger, as evidenced by his treatment of {{AP|Gligar}} in ''[[DP085|Fighting Fear With Fear!]]''.

Additionally, during the first season of the series, Ash originally trained not to further himself but instead to catch more Pokémon than his rival, Gary. He later slowed his pace which allowed him to focus on the individual traits of each Pokémon. At the [[Johto]] League [[Silver Conference]], with great humility and maturity, Ash finally won a battle against his old rival, signifying a great milestone in his history. His maturity has also increased in his dealings with Pokémon, as when [[Ash's Primeape|a Mankey]] stole his {{AP|hat}} in ''[[EP025|Primeape Goes Bananas]]'', he screamed and yelled at it, even climbing trees just to get his hat back, but when [[Dawn's Ambipom|an Aipom]] did the same in ''[[AG179|Slaking Kong]]'', he stated merely that he would feel strange without a hat.

In most episodes of the anime, especially those during the Johto League saga, Ash befriends someone who will influence him and cause him to strive to become a better Trainer. Although he is not a dependent individual, he is still young and has learned to make his way relying on his {{AP|friends}}, particularly the maternal skills of [[Brock]]. The honor of "best friend" is usually reserved for Pikachu but Ash has come to see his closest human friends in the same light over time; using the term for [[Misty]] and [[Brock]] in ''[[EP273|Gotta Catch Ya Later]]'' as well as {{an|May}} and [[Max]] in ''[[AG178|Battling the Enemy Within]]''.

He has traversed much of the {{g|world}} and has thus far participated in four [[Pokémon League#Championship competitions|Pokémon League regional competitions]], but he is still learning new things about Pokémon all the time.

Ash apparently has a close connection with [[Legendary Pokémon]], especially {{p|Ho-Oh}}, {{p|Lugia}}, {{an|Latias}} and {{an|Shaymin}}. In the English dub of the [[The Power of One|second movie]], he was revealed to be "The Chosen One" - the one who would bring balance back to the world. Although viewed as a normal human, Ash does have some special abilities as he is said to have the same [[aura]] as [[Sir Aaron]], a legendary hero, and is theoretically able to manipulate it in much the same way. However, he has not received any training in this field, opting to continue his Pokémon journey instead. He has also been likened to an ancient [[aura]] guardian in ''[[DP056|The Keystone Pops!]]'', who also had a partner {{p|Pikachu}}. Later, in ''[[DP071|Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu! Parts 1]]'' and ''[[DP072|2]]'', Ash uses [[aura]] again to locate a lost {{p|Riolu}} and read Riolu's mind as well. However, these were one time deals, as Riolu had an unnaturally powerful aura.

He has a [[Contest Pass]] for the [[Sinnoh]] region, though he has stated that the contest he got it for was the only one he intends on entering. He also has one for the Hoenn region as it was required to watch one of the contests held there. Ash also carries around a broken [[Poké Ball]], of which the other half belongs to Gary and is a symbol of their ongoing, but now friendly, rivalry, as well as [[Misty's special lure]], which she sent to him as a gift, and also half of a ribbon he received in a contest against May before she left the group to compete in Johto.

Ash lived with his mother, [[Delia Ketchum]], until he left for his Pokémon journey at the age of ten.

His father was never introduced. The anime suggests that his father was once a Pokémon Trainer that began his journey in Pallet Town, but it is unclear whether he is still living. There has been much discussion in the fandom as to the identity of Ash's father, though the writers have chosen to not focus on this aspect of Ash's life. Common characters put forward by fans for the role are [[Giovanni]], [[Professor Oak]] and {{an|Silver}}. 

An interview with the series' storyboarder confirmed Ash's father is a Trainer on his own journey. According the same storyboarder, Ash's father may or may not be introduced at the series, depending its necessity to Ash's further maturity and development as a Trainer.

Ash is an only child, breaking from the tradition of several other main characters, with the exception of {{an|Dawn}} and possibly {{Tracey}}, whose siblings are often a foil or focal point in their lives.

As a trainer, Ash has captured and befriended a sizable number of Pokémon over the course of the anime's run. His philosophy on training is that Pokémon are individuals and that a combination of trust, friendship and hard work are needed to overcome the toughest of challenges. He seems to battle best with Pokémon that are similar to Pikachu: ones that are speedy and maneuverable, yet able to preform high-powered attacks, but he is willing to work with any Pokémon that comes into his care. In general his default team while travelling consists of small but powerful Pokémon that rely on their speed to prevail against larger opponents, although he has been known to exchange his regular team members for more powerful Pokémon when facing Gym battles or League matches, such as when he used {{AP|Snorlax}} and Charizard in his rematch against [[Clair]]. Ash tends to battle in a fairly unorthodox manner as well, and his Pokémon often reflect this.

The [[Electric Tale of Pikachu|manga version]] of Ash Ketchum is based on the anime version, but there are many differences after both versions took different directions. For example, while anime Ash is indifferent to romance or members of the opposite gender (or same gender, some may argue), manga Ash has a big crush on Gary's sister, [[May Oak]]. He's also prone to quickly falling in love like Brock, but to a much less extreme degree.

* In [[EP009|the ninth episode]] Ash mentioned that he had been a Pokémon trainer for 2 months. This time frame is further reinforced when Ash learns that the Pokémon League will begin in two months when he [[EP065|returns to Pallet Town]] after earning his eighth badge - he arrives at Indigo Stadium [[EP074|nine episodes later]]. If time continued at this rate, he would be at least 20 years old in the latest Japanese episode, something that's implied strongly by {{MTR}} in ''[[DP002|Two Degrees of Separation!]]''. However, given that some episodes take place directly after each other, this time frame is clearly not consistent. There is at least one point in each adventure that it is stated that it is another year since the beginning of the current adventure. So therefore if Ash ages 1 year after each adventure, then he would be 15 now.
* Ash has been mistaken to be the son of two women from [[Kanto]] and the [[Orange Islands]]. In the first episode of the {{g|anime}}, ''[[EP001|Pokémon - I Choose You!]]'', Ash woke up late the day he was supposed to go to [[Professor Oak]]'s laboratory to obtain his first Pokémon. When he arrived at the lab, the three available starter Pokémon, {{p|Bulbasaur}}, {{p|Charmander}}, and {{p|Squirtle}} had already been taken by other trainers who arrived earlier. Seeing that Ash was disappointed, Professor Oak gave him Pikachu, which did not take a liking to its new trainer. It refused to go into a [[Poké Ball]], and when Ash failed to catch a wild Pokémon, it laughed at him. However, by the end of the episode, Ash gained Pikachu's trust by protecting it from an attack by a flock of {{p|Spearow}} and rushing it to the {{g|Center}}. Pikachu and Ash soon became inseparable. In ''[[EP039|Pikachu's Goodbye]]'', Ash gave Pikachu his consent to remain in a forest filled with Pikachu, but Pikachu returned to Ash's side.

In general, Pikachu as a species are not particularly powerful, but Ash's Pikachu is an anomaly, overcoming odds in battle numerous times. In ''[[EP005|Showdown in Pewter City]]'', it defeated [[Brock's Onix]] with an {{type2|Electric}} attack that triggered the sprinkler system causing Onix to be drenched in water, one of its weaknesses. In ''[[EP014|Electric Shock Showdown]]'', Pikachu fought [[Lt. Surge]]'s {{TP|Lt. Surge|Raichu}} and lost. During a resulting hospital stay, it refused to become Raichu's equal by evolving via a {{evostone|Thunderstone}}, and in the second battle, Pikachu overcame Raichu by using its superior speed. In ''[[EP002|Pokémon Emergency!]]'', {{MTR}} remarked that Pikachu's power "far exceeds its evolutionary level." Ash's Pikachu has also defeated very high level Pokémon that Ash's other Pokémon were unable to, such as {{p|Dragonite}} and {{p|Metagross}}. It has helped Ash win innumerable battles and [[Gym]] and {{pkmn|League}} matches.

However, at times, {{p|Pikachu}} has lived up to its species' frail and brittle strengths, particularly in Gym battles where it was defeated with relative ease by its opponent; for example, it was overpowered very easily by [[Lt. Surge's Raichu]] (in their first battle), [[Sabrina's Kadabra]], [[Blaine's Magmar]] (Thanks to its use of the 'Air Lens' technique, which heated the air around Magmar to deflect electric attacks), [[Falkner's Pidgeot]] (Having already defeated his {{p|Hoothoot}} and {{p|Dodrio}}), [[Bugsy's Scyther]] (After already battling his {{p|Metapod}}), [[Whitney's Miltank]] (Defeating it in the rematch thanks to Ash's strategy and it being worn down by {{AP|Cyndaquil}} and {{AP|Totodile}}), [[Clair's Dragonair]], [[Roark's Rampardos]] ''and'' [[Fantina's Drifblim]]. It also drew against [[Winona]]'s {{p|Pelipper}}, which would have been an easy match considering Pikachu's enormous type advantage, due to Pelipper's technique of using {{m|Steel Wing}} to ground electric attacks. It also struggled against [[Crasher Wake's Floatzel]] too.

Pikachu is extremely loyal to Ash, and while it is not always immediately trusting of strangers, it is generally friendly to humans and Pokémon alike. It acted as a guardian and big sibling to [[Misty's Togepi]], and has been seen mediating and even breaking up fights among other Pokémon, such as in ''[[PK01|Pikachu's Vacation]]''. In ''[[Mewtwo Strikes Back]]'', Pikachu, {{MTR}}, and Meowth's clone were the only Pokémon not to participate in the giant battle; Pikachu stood motionless as its clone repeatedly slapped its face.

However, even Pikachu has had exceptions to this rule. During the Hoenn Saga, Pikachu developed amnesia at one point and sided with [[Team Rocket]] for a while. Later within the same series, Pikachu was possessed by the Red Orb and controlled by Groudon, nearly causing a disaster. On several occasions, Pikachu has developed an "electric flu" causing it to become overcharged, and extremely powerful. During these instances, Pikachu will sometimes attack its friends and Ash. In all of these cases, Pikachu did not intentionally mean harm upon anyone and Pikachu is always extremely sorry for what happened.

Since Ash's first encounter with [[Team Rocket]] in ''[[EP002|Pokémon Emergency!]]'', Pikachu has been pursued by the trio of [[Jessie]], [[James]], and {{MTR}}. Throughout the series, it has been Jessie, James and Meowth's desire to steal this Pokémon from Ash and present it to [[Giovanni|their boss]]. To do this, they have come up with many schemes. Though they try, try, and try some more, every last one of their plots fail, usually with the help of Ash, his friends, other Trainers, an [[Officer Jenny]], or even themselves (such as in the [[DP001|first episode]] of the {{series|Diamond & Pearl}}).

As shown in a handful of episodes, the first being ''[[EP042|Showdown at Dark City]]'', Pikachu has a special fondness for ketchup, but it will eat and enjoy almost any other human or Pokémon food. A running joke in the anime also seems to be the destruction of a female character's [[bike]] with one of Pikachu's {{m|Thunderbolt}}s at the beginning of each series, which then causes her to {{ashfr|follow Ash}} for the remainder of the series. This has happened to [[Misty]], {{an|May}}, and {{an|Dawn}} so far.

Pikachu is the primary mascot of the Pokémon franchise, mostly due to Ash's ownership of it. It appears on nearly all merchandise and promotional material for the series, and became, due to the anime, the [[version mascot]] of and only [[starter Pokémon]] in {{game|Yellow}}.

Pikachu became the second non-legendary to defeat a [[legendary Pokémon]] in the anime after {{AP|Charizard}}, beating [[Brandon's Regice]] in ''[[AG190|Pace - The Final Frontier]]'', giving Ash his final [[Symbol|Frontier Symbol]].

Pikachu was also the only Pokémon to come with Ash to [[Hoenn]], and just the same one of only two Pokémon to join Ash on his journey to [[Sinnoh]]. It is worth noting that Ash tried to bring only Pikachu again but {{AP|Aipom}} snuck on board the ship. Up until the capture of [[Dawn's Pachirisu]], Pikachu was the only {{type2|Electric}} Pokémon in the anime owned by a main character.

In Hoenn, Pikachu learned how to surf. It also learned how to box from Ash in ''[[EP029|The Punchy Pokémon]]''.

In Sinnoh, it defeated [[Roark]]'s Onix in the [[Oreburgh Gym]] rematch.

Pikachu battled again the [[Pastoria Gym]] battle, where it battled [[Crasher Wake]]'s Gyarados and defeated it with a {{m|Volt Tackle}} to the face. It also battled [[Crasher Wake's Floatzel]] for a moment, allowing [[Ash's Buizel]] a moment to recover.

===Gender debate===
Pikachu is the most seen Pokémon in the anime and fans have often wondered what gender Pikachu is. While this debate has existed since [[Generation II|gender was introduced]], it recently flared up due to [[gender differences]] being [[Generation IV|introduced in recent games]]. For the sake of neutrality, this article will assume Pikachu's gender is unknown until explicitly stated.

*Because there is no indent on Pikachu's tail, many cite this as proof that it is indeed male. Others disagree, noting Pikachu is from [[Kanto]] (which has not yet been shown to have Pikachu with indented tails in the games besides by transferring a Pikachu from {{game|FireRed and LeafGreen|s}} to Generation IV through Pal Park), and was introduced during the time of the [[Generation I]] games, before gender itself was even known for any Pokémon.
** Some also cite a crush that [[Dawn's Buneary]], who is female, has on Pikachu as proof.
** Also, Ash has, on several occasions, referred to his Pikachu as his "buddy".
**In the song ''[[Pikachu (I Choose You)]]'', Pikachu is referred to as Ash's brother.
**In ''[[DP061|Team Shocker!]]'', {{TP|Dawn|Pachirisu}}, {{TP|Dawn|Piplup}} and {{TP|Dawn|Buneary}} are cheering for Dawn in cheerleader outfit, while Pikachu is wearing a male kimono. This may suggest Pachirisu, Piplup and Buneary are female, while Pikachu is male.
**In ''[[DP062|Tanks for the Memories!]]'', it, {{AP|Turtwig}}, and {{TP|Dawn|Piplup}} also look embarrassed being in maid outfits, much like Ash himself is, which may indicate that Pikachu, Turtwig, and Piplup are male.
**In the episode ''[[EP052|Princess vs. Princess]]'' Pikachu is carrying the shopping packages with Ash and Brock due to the Princess Festival rules, it may symbolize that he is a male too.
**In Latin America, the pronoun used to refer to Pikachu is 'he'.
**In the episode ''[[DP039|Steamboat Willies!]]'', Pikachu isn't in a dress along with the confirmed female Pokémon, but in the band with the confirmed male Ash's Buizel and the unconfirmed Pokémon.
**In the movie ''[[Lucario and the Mystery of Mew]]'', after Pikachu dressed up in a clown suit, May asks to the rest of the gang "Doesn't ''he'' look cute?"
There is also some evidence supporting the theory that Pikachu might be female.
* Gender differences don't seem to apply consistently to Pokémon caught outside [[Sinnoh]].
** Misty has on at least one occasion pictured Pikachu in dresses.
** [[Dawn's Buneary]] relation with Pikachu is one sided meaning the Buneary might not know Pikachu's gender.
** [[Ash's Bayleef]]'s extreme rivalry with Pikachu for Ash might point to Pikachu being female too.
