Mew is notable for its unique ability to learn every [[TM|Technical Machine]], [[HM|Hidden Machine]] and [[Move Tutor]] move (except those exclusive to a particular Pokémon or group of Pokémon, such as {{m|Draco Meteor}} and {{m|Secret Sword}}).

Mew is the last Pokémon in the [[List of Pokémon by Kanto Pokédex number|Kanto Pokédex]].

It is a member of the [[Mew duo]] along with {{p|Mewtwo}}.

==Biology==

Mew is normally described as a pink, {{DL|List of Pokémon by body style|Pokémon with a bipedal, tailed form|bipedal}} cat-like creature. Mew's hair is so fine and thin, it can only be seen under a microscope. It has a long, skinny tail ending with a rounded tip. Mew has big hind legs and short arms with three-fingered paws. Mew's feet are very large with oval markings near its three toes. Mew has triangular ears and baby blue eyes. Mew is said to have the {{wp|DNA}} of every single Pokémon contained within its body. It also vaguely resembles an embryo or fetus, and is often depicted in a pink orb.

Mew is a genderless species.

===Special abilities===
Mew's main abilities include turning invisible at will, creating force-fields and psychic energy, and being able to {{m|Transform}} into any type of Pokémon. Mew is capable of wielding every [[type]] of attack possible. Similarly, Mew has the capability of using any type of telekinetic ability. It also has the ability to float in mid-air, similarly to Celebi, Jirachi, and Victini. Mew has been known to be capable of surviving underwater as well.

Mew is a very curious and intelligent Pokémon that will only appear to someone with a pure heart. It loves playing around and swimming, and is known to act very childish at times, wanting everybody it trusts to play with it. It is attracted to {{wp|lullaby|lullabies}} and will try to stay as close to the music as possible. All in all, Mew is known as a happy, playful and optimistic species of Pokémon, unlike its clone, {{p|Mewtwo}}.

Reports found in [[Cinnabar Island]]'s {{ka|Pokémon Mansion}} region speak of expeditions of scientists, either independent or [[Team Rocket]]-funded, which had sighted Mew in [[Guyana]], South America, the place where its first sighting was reported. However, since Mew can either make itself invisible or transform itself into any Pokémon it chooses, very few people have knowingly seen it, and it is called a mirage by most. Since many scientists believe that Mew is the ancestor of all Pokémon, and a number of extraterrestrial Pokémon have been discovered, it is possible that Mew could [[Extraterrestrial Pokémon|inhabit other areas of the universe]], and whether it originates from [[Pokémon world|Earth]] at all is debatable.

In this movie, Mew made a couple of cameo appearances at the start of the movie. A {{an|Mewtwo}} was cloned from Mew's DNA, extracted from Mew's eyelash. Later, Mew started appearing around [[New Island]] while Mewtwo was testing his [[starter Pokémon]] clones. Mew followed [[Team Rocket]] into the main part of the island so it could stop Mewtwo from destroying the world. After the end credits of the movie, Mew is shown flying to the mountains.

In the Japanese version, Mew's characterization was different. Mew's intention was to wipe out cloned Pokémon, Mewtwo included, because it viewed them as inferior, in stark contrast to Mewtwo, who wished to eliminate natural-born.

Mew makes a small appearance in the hour-length special ''[[Mewtwo Returns]]'', the sequel to ''[[M01|Mewtwo Strikes Back]]''. Mewtwo sees it after being thrown into the Purity Spring.

Another Mew first appeared transformed as a {{p|Ho-Oh}}, and then as a {{p|Taillow}}, landing on [[Cameran Palace]] and then {{m|transform}}ing into {{p|Treecko}}. It then transformed into an {{p|Aipom}} to play with [[Ash's Pikachu]]. {{Ash}} and {{ashfr}} released their Pokémon to play with what they thought was an Aipom.

After taking them to an attic, [[Kidd Summers]] sent her two {{p|Weavile}} after it. To escape, it {{m|teleport}}ed itself, along with Pikachu and {{MTR}}. It then transformed once again into a {{p|Pidgeot}} and flew the Pokémon to the [[Tree of Beginning]]. While Ash and the others were looking for Pikachu, Mew kept it entertained with toys.

Mew also nearly sacrificed itself to save the Tree of Beginning. {{mov|Lucario|Lucario|08}} stepped in and was able to save Mew, but ended up sacrificing itself. Mew is believed to still reside at the Tree of Beginning. It is last seen playing with a {{p|Bonsly}}.

A {{pkmn2|mirage}} Mew appears in ''[[The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon]]'', and helps to interfere with the plans of [[Dr. Yung|Mirage Master]].

[[Lawrence III]]'s actions in ''[[M02|The Power of One]]'' were apparently set in motion due to an Ancient Mew card; the card itself was actually shown in the movie.

A Mew appeared in the opening of ''[[M07|Destiny Deoxys]]''.

===In the Pokémon Adventures manga===
Mew debuted in the first round of the {{chap|Red, Green & Blue}}, ''[[PS001|A Glimpse of the Glow]]''. Here, {{adv|Red}} and {{adv|Blue}} see one in [[Pallet Town]] and try to catch it, but fail. It is known as the "Phantom Pokémon" and was chased by [[Team Rocket]]. It is revealed later on, that Mew inhabits the area near Pallet Town because it lacks the pollution created by humans in other areas.

Team Rocket's chase would continue all the way to {{DL|Pokémon Adventures volume 2|the next volume}}, where they attempt to regain the disc containing Mew's habitat and information from {{adv|Green}}, but fail and are tricked into stealing an empty one she prepared. They catch up to Green and her unwilling ally Red soon afterward, and interrupt them when they tracked down and attempted to capture the rare Pokémon. However, when their {{p|Jynx}} was able to almost succeed, Mew's powerful Psychic attack left them listless, and soon escaped. The small samples of its DNA that the Rockets acquired, however, led to the creation of its powerful clone

Another volume later, Mew is briefly seen looking into [[Indigo Plateau]] after Red wins the Pokémon League championship and decides to return to Pallet Town with his two fellow [[Pokédex Holder]]s.

It later reappeared in the {{chap|FireRed & LeafGreen}}, where it saved Red and the people of [[Vermilion City]] from the impending crash of the TR helicopter. {{adv|Mewtwo}} notices this, and realizes that he too had a root to trace itself back to, as it was born from Mew's eyelash.

===In the Pokémon Pocket Monsters manga===
A Mew appeared in ''[[PM004|Obtain the Moon Stone!!]]''. This one is actually a woman who was accidentally transformed after an experiment went wrong. She turns back later to her normal form.

{{OBP|Giovanni|Pocket Monsters}} catches Mew as part of the supplies used for the creation of {{p|Mewtwo}}. It was released along with Mewtwo after the creation was unsuccessful.

In Super Smash Bros. Mew will sometimes appear out of a [[Poké Ball]]. When summoned, it will use {{m|Fly}} to leave the arena. In single player, the summoner is awarded the "Mew Catcher" bonus, worth 10,000 points.

After unlocking every character in Melee, there is a 1 in 251 chance of Mew appearing from a Poké Ball. The thrower of the Poké Ball receives the same "Mew Catcher" bonus.

Mew returns again as a rare Pokémon in Brawl, the chance of it appearing is 1 in 493 this time. Like the other "secret" Pokémon, it drops rare items instead of just flying away. In Mew's case, the items are CDs. However, once all the pick-up CDs are obtained, it will drop Stickers instead.

Mew appears in the seventh course, [[Rainbow Cloud]]. Although the game is not combat-oriented, the difficulty of photographing Mew effectively makes it the game's boss. Mew floats in a bubble that turns opaque when the zoom is activated, so players must throw a series of Pester Balls or Food at it to break the bubble so Mew will come out for a clear shot. Photographing Mew gets an automatic bonus of 2500 points, making it the highest ranking Pokémon in the game with a highest possible score of 10,000 points with perfect positioning, size and pose.

Is it right to be calling them Pokemon X Version and Pokemon Y version? Unlike previous games Nintendo hasn't used the word "version" when referring to them by name, just calling them Pokemon X and Pokemon Y rather than, to use the most recent example, "Pokemon Black Version 2" and "Pokemon White Version 2". The logos don't contain the word "version" either. I think they should simply be referred to as Pokemon X and Y.

Besides the obvious Eiffel Tower reference, I found out that the buildings shown are reminiscent of Paris's type (which was forced as an official style there) and additionally, the place Pikachu is giving the conference is Paris.

Her purpose was ostensibly to get Ash to replace her [[bicycle]], which he had accidentally destroyed when they first met. However, Misty often seemed to have forgotten about the bicycle, indicating that her real reason for following along was that she simply wanted to remain with her friends.

During her travels with Ash, she, aside from training to become the best {{t|Water}} [[Pokémon Trainer]], also acted as his coach in many Pokémon battles. She is somewhat considered as a rival to Ash due to their competitive nature. It was also her job to drag Brock away from women by his ear.

Misty can be sweet and optimistic at times, but she is best known for how easily she can be angered, crazy, or frustrated, and how loud and violent she can become in response. She is very extreme in most of her moods, and can switch between them quickly. There are many episodes where she is seen getting along with the younger siblings of the family, namely [[Mikey]], [[Sakura]], and [[Max]]. This stems from the fact that she understands what it's like to be the youngest because she has three older sisters.

Her goals are not as clear as those of the other main characters, since though her main interest is {{pkmn|training}} {{type|Water}} Pokémon, there are many things she loves to do and she is very confident in her abilities in all aspects of life. [[Fishing]] is one of her hobbies, however, and she has a [[Misty's special lure|special lure]] which she designed to look like herself and gave to Ash as a gift. The one Pokémon [[type]] that Misty cannot stand are {{type|Bug}}s; she tends to freak out in most cases whenever she encounters a Bug-type, which was first demonstrated when she refused to befriend Ash's {{AP|Caterpie|Butterfree}}. However, bugs are only one of three things Misty strongly dislikes, the other two being {{wp|carrots}} and {{wp|peppers}}. It was later used in the last part of the battle between Marina and her Starmie, it gets battered with Starmie's {{m|Tackle}} and {{m|Bubble}} but shatters Starmie's {{m|Light Screen}} with another Hyper Beam fainting it. Misty tries to recall Golduck but her Psyduck pops out. Golduck then runs off and shows off its skills to a bunch of girls.

She first appears in the chapter ''[[ET01|Pikachu, I See You]]''. She takes a liking to [[Ash's Pikachu]] and tells {{Ash}} about what it takes to be a professional Pokémon Trainer. Ash steals her [[bicycle]] later to rush Pikachu to a [[Pokémon Center]] after being injured by a flock of {{p|Spearow}}.

She travels with Ash for the following chapter, ''[[ET02|Play Misty For Me]]'', expecting Ash to repay her for her bike. Later in the same chapter, when Ash arrives in [[Cerulean City]], he battles her instead of [[The Sensational Sisters]]. A '''fake Pokémon''' is a non-official {{OBP|Pokémon|species}}. There are several ways in which one can be created and enter mainstream knowledge.

==Assumptions of real Pokémon==
Sometimes before the release of a new [[generation]] of [[Pokémon games]], a silhouette of a new Pokémon will be released in [[Pokémon Wonderland]], with the picture shown the following month. In that timeframe, sometimes fans will guess what the Pokémon will look like and draw up their assumptions. Others interpret these assumptions as the actual Pokémon.

In other instances, a false name or evolution of a Pokémon may be invented by a fan before any official release. Other fans, again, interpret these assumptions as fact.

Some assumed Pokémon include:
* Pikablu, the assumed name of {{p|Marill}}
* Assumed [[evolution]]s of types like {{t|Steel}}, {{t|Bug}}, {{t|Poison}}, {{t|Rock}}, {{t|Ground}} and {{t|Ghost}} for {{p|Eevee}}

Fake items, with accompanying "methods of obtaining", were invented to evolve regular Pokémon into fake Pokémon. For example, a "Mist Stone" was fabled to evolve every single Pokémon.

A common example of a well-known fake Pokémon is Mewthree. It appears commonly in fake [[cheating|cheats]] and fan fiction.

Rumors of Mewthree's existence within the [[Pokémon games]] have circulated since the [[Generation I|first generation]]. Many fake methods were created, that were often impossible to perform or resulted in the player deleting their save file. These stories have led to a number of [[hack games]] focusing on this unofficial Pokémon. The most notable of these is {{DL|Hack games|Pokémon Chaos Black}}, in which Mewthree can [[Evolution|evolve]] into another fake Pokémon, Mewthree X.

Mewthree was also one of the names given to the silhouette of {{p|Lucario}} early after its release on many internet forums because it appeared strikingly similar to Mewtwo.

Although it was a fake Pokémon, it was given an official mention in ''[[M01|Mewtwo Strikes Back]]'', where the scientists responsible for creating {{an|Mewtwo}}, commenting on the success of its creation, decided to start making Mewthree. However, the plans never got beyond this due to Mewtwo's destruction of the lab on [[New Island]].

A '''fake Pokémon''' is a non-official {{OBP|Pokémon|species}}. There are several ways in which one can be created and enter mainstream knowledge.

==Assumptions of real Pokémon==
Sometimes before the release of a new [[generation]] of [[Pokémon games]], a silhouette of a new Pokémon will be released in [[Pokémon Wonderland]], with the picture shown the following month. In that timeframe, sometimes fans will guess what the Pokémon will look like and draw up their assumptions. Others interpret these assumptions as the actual Pokémon.

In other instances, a false name or evolution of a Pokémon may be invented by a fan before any official release. Other fans, again, interpret these assumptions as fact.

Some assumed Pokémon include:
* Pikablu, the assumed name of {{p|Marill}}
* Assumed [[evolution]]s of types like {{t|Steel}}, {{t|Bug}}, {{t|Poison}}, {{t|Rock}}, {{t|Ground}} and {{t|Ghost}} for {{p|Eevee}}
* Nidogod, the assumed evolution of {{p|Nidoking}}

* Shellbro, the assumed evolution of {{p|Shellder}} (usage of a {{DL|Valuable item|SlowpokeTail}})
* Kangaschan or Kanga, the assumed name of {{p|Kangaskhan}}'s baby, which could evolve into a male version of Kangaskhan.

Fake items, with accompanying "methods of obtaining", were invented to evolve regular Pokémon into fake Pokémon. For example, a "Mist Stone" was fabled to evolve every single Pokémon.
