It is, along with {{p|Raikou}} and {{p|Entei}}, one of the [[legendary beasts]] created by {{p|Ho-Oh}} after the burning of the [[Brass Tower]]. Of the three legendary beasts, Suicune is said to represent the rains that quenched the flames of the burning Brass Tower.

Suicune is a blue wolf or Leopard-like creature, with white diamond-shaped spots and a white underside. Suicune has a purple cape that resembles a northern aurora or a flowing river and two white streamer-like tails. Strangely, these tails are never seen flowing behind Suicune, a possible effect from the Northern wind blowing from behind it. It has a hexagonal, aquamarine-colored crest on its forehead, red irises, a protrusion on the underside of its chin and small paws. Its paws have a small white oval on their underside.

Suicune has the power to purify dirty water and can walk across water. Northern winds always seems to blow where ever it shows up. Because Suicune is the embodiment of the north winds, it is able to learn and use almost every attack with relation to the wind (such as {{m|Gust}}, {{m|Icy Wind}}, {{m|Blizzard}}, and even {{m|Tailwind}}, making it the only non-[[Flying-type]] to do so). Suicune, like the other [[Legendary Beasts]], is also extremely fast, but, interestingly, it does not learn {{m|ExtremeSpeed}} naturally. It also sports limited mental powers.

As noted in {{game|Crystal}}, Suicune is said to be the closest of the [[Legendary Beasts]] to {{p|Ho-Oh}}. It is also said to have a link to the {{p|Unown}}.

* In the anime, Suicune has shown a heroic, serious and calm nature to dangerous situations and has appeared just in time to save the main character or [[character of the day]], as shown in ''[[Drifloon on the Wind!]]'' when it races to save Ash and Paige.
* In [[Pokémon Adventures]], it was thought to be searching for a trainer strong enough to master him, but was however looking for allies in the battle against the [[Masked Man]] to save its creator, {{p|Ho-Oh}}.

Many speculate that Suicune and the rest of the Legendary Beasts are indeed not unique species because in ''[[M04|Celebi: Voice of the Forest]]'', [[Professor Oak]] speaks as if the Suicune in question was a specific Pokémon of that species.

Suicune was awakened by {{adv|Yellow}} along with its two counterparts, and the three raced around [[Kanto]] and [[Johto]] looking for {{pkmn|Trainer}}s to help them defeat the [[Masked Man]] to free {{p|Ho-Oh}}. Suicune, in particular, personally challenges nearly every single [[Gym Leader]] in the two [[region]]s. During its travels, it encounters both [[Eusine]] and {{adv|Crystal}}, both of which become obsessed with capturing it. Crystal acquires the [[Clear Bell|Crystal Bell]], but is still unable to capture Suicune. She has her confidence shattered by this and has to retreat back to her old training grounds to regain her confidence. Suicune later chooses [[Misty]] as its partner, but then pairs up with Crystal anyway after Misty becomes injured.

Its ability to purify water is also reminiscent of a {{wp|unicorn}}. Suicune may also resemble {{wp|Fujin}}, the Shinto god of wind, who wears leopard skin. A Pokémon that represents the wind and rain, Suicune may also be based on Anitong Tabo, who according to the {{wp|Deities of Philippine mythology|Philippine mythology}}, was the goddess of winds and rains.

*Suicune's sprite in {{2v2|Gold|Silver}} had a purple head piece, but was permanently changed to blue in {{v2|Crystal}}.
*Suicune's {{v2|Crystal}} sprite depicts a blue lower jaw, even though it is white in all other sprites.
*Despite being a sole {{type2|Water}}, Suicune displays many {{type2|Ice}} features, as well as being the only non-{{type2|Ice}} Pokémon to learn {{m|Blizzard}} naturally.
*In the anime, Suicune's body color and headpiece are more of a bluish-green color, while its in-game sprites and [[Ken Sugimori]]'s official artwork show Suicune's body being more of a sky blue color.

Suicune resembles a {{wp|maned wolf}} or a {{wp|cheetah}}. Its ability to purify water is also reminiscent of a {{wp|unicorn}}.

Suicune's name is probably based off its Japanese name, Suikun. Suikun is likely a combination of 水 ''sui'', water, and 君 ''kun'', monarch.
