The '''Mystery Zone''' (Japanese: '''なぞのばしょ''' ''Mystery Place''{{sup|DPPt}}, '''----'''{{sup|HGSS}}) is an area in the [[Generation IV]] games that serves as "filler space" between normally accessible outdoor and indoor areas. It exists all around Sinnoh, to facilitate the precise entry into [[the Underground]], which has tunnels that travel under areas where no routes or cities exist. The Mystery Zone is the result of the game loading improperly, usually caused by [[Tweaking]]. This result is caused by the character moving to fast for the game to process the next area and tiles of properly, because when the character moves, the game automatically tries to load the area moved into, but the character moves out of the area too quick for the game to process and successfully load the area, and repeats this error causing the next area to be black, which in most cases is the desired affect of tweakers, because of the exclusive Pokemon that may be encountered in this area. In rare cases, this may happen on accident like when attempting to hatch an egg, which may result in damage to the saved file, or even permanent damage because of the unsuspecting player's lack of knowledge on the subject.

==Geography==
The geography is made predominantly of trees, water, or blank void space. The area itself is named "Mystery Zone", with the location header popping up to display this name when the area is entered. No Pokémon or items are found in the Mystery Zone.

===Access===
The Mystery Zone is normally inaccessible, but can be entered by means of [[tweaking]] and the [[surf glitch]].

==Music==
In {{3v2|Diamond|Pearl|Platinum}}, the music is a slightly off-key version of the theme of [[Route]]s {{rtn|206|Sinnoh}}, {{rtn|207|Sinnoh}}, {{rtn|208|Sinnoh}}, {{rtn|220|Sinnoh}} and {{rtn|221|Sinnoh}}. Sometimes, the background music used in [[the Underground]] may also be played. In {{v2|HeartGold and SoulSilver|s}}, the background music is the theme of {{rt|29|Johto}}; however, it cannot be changed to its 8-bit counterpart with the [[GB Sounds]].

==Glitches caused==
In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, the menu cannot be opened, and the touchscreen menu cannot be used; however a registered [[key item]] can be used to refresh the graphics in the area at any time.

When walking through mountainous terrain in the Mystery Zone, the player may become hidden by the terrain. The screen may also appear to zoom in as one enters the zone. Some areas of the Mystery Zone can cause a [[game freeze]]. Certain areas of the Mystery Zone, particularly those bordering the Sinnoh [[Elite Four]]'s rooms, will lock up the game with a black screen if the player refreshes the graphics there. Saving in one of these areas will cause the game to lock up like this whenever the resulting save file is opened, causing the save file to become unusable.

By traveling from one area to another through the Mystery Zone, the tileset will not be changed even if the new area was supposed to use a different tileset. Currently loaded 3D props, such as buildings, are subject to this as well. Simply refreshing the graphics will solve this. Sinnoh's Mystery Zone has its own, unused tileset which can be seen by entering it from the overworld, refreshing the graphics there, and then returning to the overworld. This tileset can also be seen in a pre-release screenshot of Diamond and Pearl, indicating that it is left over from a [[Pokémon Diamond and Pearl beta|beta]] version of the game. The unused tileset remains within the coding of {{2v2|HeartGold|SoulSilver}}.

Occasionally, the game can be tricked into thinking that the player is somewhere else while in the Mystery Zone, such as displaying the [[Turnback Cave]] title and starting to display {{Weather|fog}}, while the floor remains black and the map displays that the player is on {{rt|221|Sinnoh}}.

The '''Iron Ruins''' (Japanese: '''くろがねのいせき''' ''Iron Ruins'') is a special room in [[Iron Island]]. It is only accessible in {{game|Platinum}}, when the {{player}} has an {{pkmn2|event}} {{p|Regigigas}} in their [[party]]. It is called the Iron Ruins because it is the home of Registeel, the Iron Pokémon.

The extra cave is by the exit, and replaces the cave from {{2v2|Diamond|Pearl}}. A "statue" of {{p|Registeel}} is present. By stepping on the 7-dot pattern on the floor and walking up to the statue, Registeel will attack. It is at [[level]] 30. It can be rebattled multiple times as long as the Event Regigigas is in the party; however, it can only be caught once.

The '''Mew glitch''' is a software bug in all three of the [[Generation I]] [[Game Boy]] games, discovered in 2003.<ref>[http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Mew-glitch Nation Master - Encyclopedia: Mew glitch]</ref> This glitch is famous for allowing players to catch any non-glitched Pokémon in the game, most notably {{p|Mew}}. Method #3 of the Mew glitch allows one to catch both [[glitch Pokémon]] and regular Pokémon. The Mew Glitch is thought to be put in by an anonymous member of Nintendo.

==Methods==
===Method #1===
To acquire Mew at the earliest point possible in the game, the player must not have defeated the {{tc|Swimmer}} in [[Cerulean Gym]] and the {{tc|Camper|Jr. Trainer}} (the one who says "I saw your feat from the grass" when the battle with him begins) on {{rt|24|Kanto}} in the grass. The player must defeat [[Nugget Bridge]] as usual.

Note that the player must have an {{p|Abra}} that can {{m|teleport}}, and therefore if playing {{v|Yellow}} must have reached {{rt|5|Kanto}} or traded for one previously.

The player first heals at the [[Cerulean City]] [[Pokémon Center]], so they may teleport there later. The player then needs to add an Abra to the [[party]] and go to Route 24. The player then needs to stand above the Jr. Trainer so that he is just off the screen. Then the player must move down until seen and immediately press the "START" button. The player then needs to use teleport with Abra. If done correctly, the Jr. Trainer should get the indicative exclamation mark immediatly before the player teleports. At this point, the [[menu]] will not work until the player battles, though it is imperative to not battle.

The player then needs to head east from the Pokémon Center into the [[Cerulean Gym]] and battle the Swimmer. After defeating the Swimmer (the menu should be available upon victory), the player then must head to Route 24, and after several steps the menu will appear. Upon closing of the menu, a battle will begin with a wild Mew.

====Method #1 (alternate method)====
The player must follow the steps for Method #1 exactly until after teleporting from the Jr. Trainer.
The player then must head north towards {{rt|25|Kanto}} and battle the {{tc|Youngster}}. As in Method #1, it is imperative to not battle before then. The player must engage in battle by being seen (and must walk along the wall to be seen, not towards him or the [[game freeze|game will freeze]]).

After defeating the Youngster, the player then needs to walk towards Cerulean City. After a certain amount of steps, the Start menu appears. Closing it should begin a battle against a wild Mew.

===Method #2===
For this method, the player needs to find any Trainer in the game that will engage in battle the moment the Trainer is on screen and the player is in the Trainer's line of sight. The player then needs to take one step down closer to the NPC, but make sure that the NPC does not see the player, and then immediately press the "START" button. The menu will appear and the player will be able to {{m|Fly}} or {{m|Teleport}}. The player needs to fly or teleport to [[Cerulean City]]. While flying, the exclamation point that usually appears above a {{pkmn|Trainer}}'s head when they challenge the player to battle will appear. The player then needs to go to {{rt|24|Kanto}} and, defeat the Youngster that owns a {{p|Slowpoke}} (and must walk along the wall to be seen, not towards him or the [[game freeze|game will freeze]]). After defeating him, the player needs to fly or teleport to [[Lavender Town]] and head to {{rt|8|Kanto}}. The menu will appear. Pressing B will make a wild Mew appear at Level 7.

For this method, the player first needs a Pokémon with a {{stat|Special}} stat of 21. It doesn't matter if the stat was naturally leveled or boosted with {{EV|stat experience}}, as long as it's not due to an in-battle Special-stat boosting skill. The player needs to find any Trainer in the game that will engage in battle the moment the Trainer is on screen and the player is in the Trainer's line of sight. The player then needs to take one step down closer to the Trainer, but make sure that the Trainer does not see the player, and then immediately press the "START" button. Once the player has pressed start and the menu appears, the player needs to {{m|Fly}} or {{m|Teleport}} elsewhere. The location being traveled to must have a path via which the player can walk both to a place where there are wild {{p|Ditto}} ({{rt|15|Kanto}}{{sup|RB}} or {{ka|Pokémon Mansion}}{{sup|Y}}); the location being traveled to must also have a Trainer to fight. This is because the start button will no longer work until after a battle with a Trainer (to be mentioned) because the game has been tricked into thinking it's in battle mode. Once the battle with the Trainer the player picked (the first Trainer) was evaded successfully with Fly or Teleport, the player then needs to battle any Trainer in the new location; there needs to be one space between the player and the second Trainer when the battle is initiated so that the second Trainer has to walk up to the player. After defeating the Trainer, the player needs to encounter a wild {{p|Ditto}}, and battle it until it uses {{m|Transform}} on the player's Pokémon with the Special Stat of 21. After defeating the Ditto (with any of the player's Pokémon), the player must not battle, and go back to the location where the first Trainer the player first evaded is located. Once the location is approached, the menu will automatically appear. The player must press the B button. A battle will begin with a wild {{p|Mew}}.

This method can be used to catch any Pokémon in the game, even some glitch Pokémon. While a Pokémon with a special stat of 21 will give one Mew, using a Pokémon with a different special stat will give the player a different Pokémon. For example, in the Red/Blue versions, if a Pokémon with a Special stat of 198 is used, [[LM4]] will appear instead of Mew. Some Special stats will cause [[glitch Trainer]]s to appear.

===Glitch Pokémon===
Many different regular and glitch Pokémon, as well as [[glitch Trainer]]s, can be encountered with the Ditto glitch. A Pokémon encountered using the Mew glitch is most commonly level 7. This is because as one Pokémon's {{stat|Special}} Stat corresponds to the [[index number]] of the Pokémon, the Pokémon's level also corresponds to the attack stage of the last encountered Pokémon. The attack stage is the variable which is changed when a stat-modifying move like {{m|Growl}} is used. 7 is the unchanged value, but will range from 1 to 13 depending on how many attack boosts or drops the opponent received. For example, if the player used {{m|Growl}} on the Pokémon six times, he or she could encounter a level 1 Pokémon. If the Ditto glitch is used and a [[glitch Trainer]] is encountered, the [[Trainer class]] will use a different team corresponding to the attack stage. This causes glitchy parties to appear if an attack-modifying move is not used to lower the attack stage to at least 3.

==Overview==
The glitch in fact works as follows: Any Trainer can be used for the first section, as long as the Trainer notices the player as soon as he/she enters the game screen, and that the player is walking towards them from either the top, left or right (walking from below will not work). Teleport and Fly (or [[Escape Rope]] and {{m|Dig}} if in a dungeon) can be used to trigger the glitch. For the Youngster, any Pokémon will do as long as it can be fought without walking up to a Trainer. To finish off the glitch, the player must return to the route of the Trainer evaded. The Pokémon that the player will find wild is dependent on the Special stat of the Pokémon the player last faced (wild or from the Trainer), and so using a Pokémon with the Special stat the player needs and finding a {{p|Ditto}} that transforms will produce an identical effect. The required Special stat for Mew is 21.

I think it is a simalur situation with Nando, where his Roselia/Roserade took a back seat to Kricketune. Drew's Flygon has been part of very significant battles, also assisted Drew while trying to capthure Arcanine and rescued May that time Harley and TR were working together. In May's epic battle with Drew at the end of the Kanto GF, Roselia did not even feature whereas Flygon did. :I don't find Flygon to be the same situation as Kricketune. Kricketune obviously surpassed Roserade as Nando's main Pokémon. The same cannot be said for Flygon. Roselia is still Drew's main and most used Pokémon. And he used it against May in their last known battle together and appeared in cameos as Roserade. Flygon has yet to be seen again.

== Anime Episode Images May Be Temporarily Unavailable ==

Hey Kenji, I just wanted to let you know that over the next few days I'm going to be restoring and buffing the quality of lots of anime episode header images. I won't be changing their content, but instead saving the images and doing things like correcting color-balance and removing compression artifacts. As a result, it seems that upon uploading said images it takes 30-60 minutes for them to be cached across all of the bulbapedia servers, in between which they may disappear on the articles. The reason why I'm going on a bit of a spree is because I've noticed a ton of episode images that are either really dark, or have bad compression artifacts (i.e image noise, random squares of the wrong color, radioactive skin, etc). Just to clarify, I won't be swapping any of the images for different ones, I'll just boost the quality on the existing ones. If an image is so low quality that it's not salvageable, I'll take a screenshot of the episode from my Pokemon DVDs. In that case, I'll make sure it's the same scene as depicted in the original image. If you'd like to see an example of my work so far, you can compare the current image with the previous one for the episode image of EP001. I've actually uploaded replacements all the way up to EP005, but EP002-EP005 are still being cached and are only viewable when referenced directly at the archives. I hope you don't mind the temporary outage, but I think it's worth it :). I intend to do as many images as possible, I may even turn this into a personal project and over the next few months fix any low-quality images for the entire Pokemon series. I just want to know how things normally work here, so I don't make the same errors again. Okay1 As I said on my own talk page, I am only a beginner on editing so I may make errors while I am editing. As for some Pokemon. I was going to ask you about some pages like Chili and Cress because they had "vaen=" way before I started editing those pages. Honestly, I tried reasoning with people. Can you please listen to this? Ash's Charizard, when he was a Charmander, Ash's Squirtle, and Ash's Bulbasaur basically referred to themselves as "boku". You and the others stated that the key defining factor for a Pokémon's gender being confirmed in the Anime is either it is explicitly stated or if they are shown side by side with another Pokémon and have gender differences, and last time I checked, "boku" is a Masculine pronoun, mainly used by young boys, so I really don't see how that is NOT a confirmation of gender, especially when, thanks to the episode about the insane Togepi, they pretty much made it quite clear that homosexuality can't exist between Pokémon (otherwise, why would they be confirmed from attract?). And in the case of Charizard, considering the fact that Charizard is implied to have mated with Charla, a Charizard who is pretty much an obvious female (I mean, come on, it has the eyelashes, the head bow, and both the English and Japanese versions gave her a feminine name). I mean, if the fact that Ash's Butterfree mated with a pink Butterfree in Bye Bye Butterfree was proof enough to have Ash's Butterfree be confirmed male, I honestly don't see how that doesn't confirm Asn's Charizard as male, as well. I tried explaining it, but people are claiming that it's not that, and even when I posted it on Ash's Charizard page, it didn't work. Is there a reason why we need both the series and season infoboxes when they can easily convey the same information in one template?

The links to the season pages in the seasons box could replace the links in the series box that just take you to a lower point on the listing page - that's really kind of redundant seeing as there are already links to the listing pages ''in'' the series template, and the contents tables at the tops of those pages make navigating easy enough already. Why not have one catch-all template? It would allow direct access between the episode listing pages and the season pages - something not possible at the moment.

I think it is a simalur situation with Nando, where his Roselia/Roserade took a back seat to Kricketune. Drew's Flygon has been part of very significant battles, also assisted Drew while trying to capthure Arcanine and rescued May that time Harley and TR were working together. In May's epic battle with Drew at the end of the Kanto GF, Roselia did not even feature whereas Flygon did. I'm not saying Roselia is not notable but I'am saying Flygon is as notable, maybe more, but as always it is your call.

== Anime Episode Images May Be Temporarily Unavailable ==

Hey Kenji, I just wanted to let you know that over the next few days I'm going to be restoring and buffing the quality of lots of anime episode header images. I won't be changing their content, but instead saving the images and doing things like correcting color-balance and removing compression artifacts. As a result, it seems that upon uploading said images it takes 30-60 minutes for them to be cached across all of the bulbapedia servers, in between which they may disappear on the articles. The reason why I'm going on a bit of a spree is because I've noticed a ton of episode images that are either really dark, or have bad compression artifacts (i.e image noise, random squares of the wrong color, radioactive skin, etc). Just to clarify, I won't be swapping any of the images for different ones, I'll just boost the quality on the existing ones. If an image is so low quality that it's not salvageable, I'll take a screenshot of the episode from my Pokemon DVDs. In that case, I'll make sure it's the same scene as depicted in the original image. If you'd like to see an example of my work so far, you can compare the current image with the previous one for the episode image of EP001. I've actually uploaded replacements all the way up to EP005, but EP002-EP005 are still being cached and are only viewable when referenced directly at the archives. I hope you don't mind the temporary outage, but I think it's worth it :). I intend to do as many images as possible, I may even turn this into a personal project and over the next few months fix any low-quality images for the entire Pokemon series. I just want to know how things normally work here, so I don't make the same errors again. Okay1 As I said on my own talk page, I am only a beginner on editing so I may make errors while I am editing. As for some Pokemon. I was going to ask you about some pages like Chili and Cress because they had "vaen=" way before I started editing those pages. Honestly, I tried reasoning with people. Can you please listen to this? Ash's Charizard, when he was a Charmander, Ash's Squirtle, and Ash's Bulbasaur basically referred to themselves as "boku". You and the others stated that the key defining factor for a Pokémon's gender being confirmed in the Anime is either it is explicitly stated or if they are shown side by side with another Pokémon and have gender differences, and last time I checked, "boku" is a Masculine pronoun, mainly used by young boys, so I really don't see how that is NOT a confirmation of gender, especially when, thanks to the episode about the insane Togepi, they pretty much made it quite clear that homosexuality can't exist between Pokémon (otherwise, why would they be confirmed from attract?). And in the case of Charizard, considering the fact that Charizard is implied to have mated with Charla, a Charizard who is pretty much an obvious female (I mean, come on, it has the eyelashes, the head bow, and both the English and Japanese versions gave her a feminine name). I mean, if the fact that Ash's Butterfree mated with a pink Butterfree in Bye Bye Butterfree was proof enough to have Ash's Butterfree be confirmed male, I honestly don't see how that doesn't confirm Asn's Charizard as male, as well. I tried explaining it, but people are claiming that it's not that, and even when I posted it on Ash's Charizard page, it didn't work. I don't agree with edit warring or BCCouches's behavior but you must admit that the word "main" has been added to Cheren and Bianca's too precipitously. From what we've seen in BW Saga so far, those aren't protagonists, just side characters who join Black at certain occassions (like the Striaton Gym Battle) but the Saga doesn't resolve around their journey. They also don't have working Pokedexes. I'd really wait some time before deeming them main or non-main characters. In May's epic battle with Drew at the end of the Kanto GF, Roselia did not even feature whereas Flygon did. == Anime Episode Images May Be Temporarily Unavailable ==

Hey Kenji, I just wanted to let you know that over the next few days I'm going to be restoring and buffing the quality of lots of anime episode header images. I won't be changing their content, but instead saving the images and doing things like correcting color-balance and removing compression artifacts. As a result, it seems that upon uploading said images it takes 30-60 minutes for them to be cached across all of the bulbapedia servers, in between which they may disappear on the articles. The reason why I'm going on a bit of a spree is because I've noticed a ton of episode images that are either really dark, or have bad compression artifacts (i.e image noise, random squares of the wrong color, radioactive skin, etc). Just to clarify, I won't be swapping any of the images for different ones, I'll just boost the quality on the existing ones. If an image is so low quality that it's not salvageable, I'll take a screenshot of the episode from my Pokemon DVDs. In that case, I'll make sure it's the same scene as depicted in the original image. If you'd like to see an example of my work so far, you can compare the current image with the previous one for the episode image of EP001. I've actually uploaded replacements all the way up to EP005, but EP002-EP005 are still being cached and are only viewable when referenced directly at the archives. I hope you don't mind the temporary outage, but I think it's worth it :). I intend to do as many images as possible, I may even turn this into a personal project and over the next few months fix any low-quality images for the entire Pokemon series. Okay1 As I said on my own talk page, I am only a beginner on editing so I may make errors while I am editing. As for some Pokemon. I was going to ask you about some pages like Chili and Cress because they had "vaen=" way before I started editing those pages. Honestly, I tried reasoning with people. Can you please listen to this? Ash's Charizard, when he was a Charmander, Ash's Squirtle, and Ash's Bulbasaur basically referred to themselves as "boku". You and the others stated that the key defining factor for a Pokémon's gender being confirmed in the Anime is either it is explicitly stated or if they are shown side by side with another Pokémon and have gender differences, and last time I checked, "boku" is a Masculine pronoun, mainly used by young boys, so I really don't see how that is NOT a confirmation of gender, especially when, thanks to the episode about the insane Togepi, they pretty much made it quite clear that homosexuality can't exist between Pokémon (otherwise, why would they be confirmed from attract?). And in the case of Charizard, considering the fact that Charizard is implied to have mated with Charla, a Charizard who is pretty much an obvious female (I mean, come on, it has the eyelashes, the head bow, and both the English and Japanese versions gave her a feminine name). I mean, if the fact that Ash's Butterfree mated with a pink Butterfree in Bye Bye Butterfree was proof enough to have Ash's Butterfree be confirmed male, I honestly don't see how that doesn't confirm Asn's Charizard as male, as well. I tried explaining it, but people are claiming that it's not that, and even when I posted it on Ash's Charizard page, it didn't work. To acquire Mew at the earliest point possible in the game, the player must not have defeated the {{tc|Swimmer}} in [[Cerulean Gym]] and the {{tc|Camper|Jr. Trainer}} (the one who says "I saw your feet from the grass" when the battle with him begins) on {{rt|24|Kanto}} in the grass. The player must defeat [[Nugget Bridge]] as usual.

Note that the player must have an {{p|Abra}} that can {{m|teleport}}, and therefore if playing {{v|Yellow}} must have reached {{rt|5|Kanto}} or traded for one previously.

The player first heals at the [[Cerulean City]] [[Pokémon Center]], so they may teleport there later. The player then needs to add an Abra to the [[party]] and go to Route 24. The player then needs to stand above the Jr. Trainer so that he is just off the screen. Then the player must move down until seen and immediately press the "START" button. The player then needs to use teleport with Abra. If done correctly, the Jr. Trainer should get the indicative exclamation mark immediatly before the player teleports. At this point, the [[menu]] will not work until the player battles, though it is imperative to not battle.

The player then needs to head east from the Pokémon Center into the [[Cerulean Gym]] and battle the Swimmer. After defeating the Swimmer (the menu should be available upon victory), the player then must head to Route 24, and after several steps the menu will appear. Upon closing of the menu, a battle will begin with a wild Mew.

====Method #1 (alternate method)====
The player must follow the steps for Method #1 exactly until after teleporting from the Jr. Trainer.
The player then must head north towards {{rt|25|Kanto}} and battle the {{tc|Youngster}}. As in Method #1, it is imperative to not battle before then. The player must engage in battle by being seen (and must walk along the wall to be seen, not towards him or the [[game freeze|game will freeze]]).

After defeating the Youngster, the player then needs to walk towards Cerulean City. After a certain amount of steps, the Start menu appears. Closing it should begin a battle against a wild Mew.

For this method, the player needs to find any Trainer in the game that will engage in battle the moment the Trainer is on screen and the player is in the Trainer's line of sight. The player then needs to take one step down closer to the NPC, but make sure that the NPC does not see the player, and then immediately press the "START" button. The menu will appear and the player will be able to {{m|Fly}} or {{m|Teleport}}. The player needs to fly or teleport to [[Cerulean City]]. While flying, the exclamation point that usually appears above a {{pkmn|Trainer}}'s head when they challenge the player to battle will appear. The player then needs to go to {{rt|24|Kanto}} and, defeat the Youngster that owns a {{p|Slowpoke}} (and must walk along the wall to be seen, not towards him or the [[game freeze|game will freeze]]). The player then needs to take one step down closer to the Trainer, but make sure that the Trainer does not see the player, and then immediately press the "START" button. Once the player has pressed start and the menu appears, the player needs to {{m|Fly}} or {{m|Teleport}} elsewhere. The location being traveled to must have a path via which the player can walk both to a place where there are wild {{p|Ditto}} ({{rt|15|Kanto}}{{sup|RB}} or {{ka|Pokémon Mansion}}{{sup|Y}}); the location being traveled to must also have a Trainer to fight. This is because the start button will no longer work until after a battle with a Trainer (to be mentioned) because the game has been tricked into thinking it's in battle mode. Once the battle with the Trainer the player picked (the first Trainer) was evaded successfully with Fly or Teleport, the player then needs to battle any Trainer in the new location; there needs to be one space between the player and the second Trainer when the battle is initiated so that the second Trainer has to walk up to the player. After defeating the Trainer, the player needs to encounter a wild {{p|Ditto}}, and battle it until it uses {{m|Transform}} on the player's Pokémon with the Special Stat of 21. After defeating the Ditto (with any of the player's Pokémon), the player must not battle, and go back to the location where the first Trainer the player first evaded is located. Once the location is approached, the menu will automatically appear. The player must press the B button. A battle will begin with a wild {{p|Mew}}.

This method can be used to catch any Pokémon in the game, even some glitch Pokémon. While a Pokémon with a special stat of 21 will give one Mew, using a Pokémon with a different special stat will give the player a different Pokémon. A Pokémon encountered using the Mew glitch is most commonly level 7. This is because as one Pokémon's {{stat|Special}} Stat corresponds to the [[index number]] of the Pokémon, the Pokémon's level also corresponds to the attack stage of the last encountered Pokémon. The attack stage is the variable which is changed when a stat-modifying move like {{m|Growl}} is used. 7 is the unchanged value, but will range from 1 to 13 depending on how many attack boosts or drops the opponent received. For example, if the player used {{m|Growl}} on the Pokémon six times, he or she could encounter a level 1 Pokémon. The glitch in fact works as follows: Any Trainer can be used for the first section, as long as the Trainer notices the player as soon as he/she enters the game screen, and that the player is walking towards them from either the top, left or right (walking from below will not work). Trading the Pokémon back to the Generation I game will cause the move to become a glitch move. In [[Generation I]], many glitch moves are named after TMs or HMs; TMs numbered {{m|TM01|01}} to {{m|TM55|55}} and HMs numbered {{m|HM01|01}} to {{m|HM05|05}} exist as moves; however, some have {{m|--|no name}} or a {{m|Super Glitch|glitched, unreadable name}}. Some glitch moves are of known glitch types, but others have either no readable type or an unknown type. Usually only glitch Pokémon will learn glitch moves.

One way of teaching a Pokémon in [[Generation I]] a glitch move is with a Pokémon that can evolve by trading. This can be achieved by trading a trade evolution Pokémon from a Generation I game to a Generation II, at a level where its evolved form will learn a move not in Generation I. Trading the Pokémon back to the Generation I game will cause the move to become a glitch move. For example, trading a level 48 {{p|Haunter}} from {{game3|Red and Blue|Pokémon Red|s}} to {{game3|Gold and Silver|Pokémon Gold|s}} will make the Haunter evolve into {{p|Gengar}}. Since it is level 48, it will learn {{m|Mean Look}}. If it is then traded back to Pokémon Red, it will still have the move, but the game won't recognize it properly since it is a Generation II move, so will become {{m|TM12}}.

There are many different glitch types that are found to be the types of several glitch Pokémon and moves. The majority of them are used for very few Pokémon or moves.

===Glitch locations===
There are several locations which can only be reached by way of a glitch in the games. One of the most well known glitch locations is [[Glitch City]]. Other examples of this are areas in the [[Sevii Islands]] that are retrievable via their [[index number]] pointer, however, do not have any other data. [[Sevii Isles 8 and 9]] are the only index number areas which have actual map data. There are also other beta locations such as the [[beta Safari Zone]].

Placeholder items are often left in the game's code to prevent it from crashing if the data is accessed, such as the [[Teru-sama]] in [[Generation II]]. Other [[generation]]s likewise have placeholder items, with most appearing at the end of the item list, though a few, likely those removed during development, appear in the middle.
