==Plot==

[[Crown City]], a town where water and greenery, old streets and modern buildings, coexist in beautiful harmony. Intending to watch the "[[Pokémon Backer World Cup]]" being held there, {{Ash}}, {{AP|Pikachu}}, and {{ashfr|company}} head for Crown City. On the way, they meet and join up with {{OBP|Zorua|movie 13}}, a Pokémon said to be searching for its companion.

Meanwhile, a Pokémon called {{OBP|Zoroark|movie 13}} is destroying Crown City in the guise of {{p|Raikou}}, {{p|Suicune}}, and {{p|Entei}}. {{p|Celebi}}, returning to the town for the first time in twenty years, is presented with its own crisis...

A '''Gym Leader''' (Japanese: '''ジムリーダー''' ''Gym Leader'') is the highest ranking member of a Pokémon [[Gym]]. The main job of a Gym Leader is to test Trainers and their Pokémon so that they are strong and resourceful enough to compete against the [[Elite Four]] in the games or the [[Pokémon League]] in the anime. If a {{pkmn|Trainer}} defeats a Gym Leader in battle, then the Trainer earns that Gym's [[Badge]]. Once a Trainer has earned 8 badges from a region, he or she is able to compete against that region's Elite Four or Pokémon League.

A Gym Leader's job is not just to test upcoming Trainers. They must oversee how their respective gym is run and to maintain it. Great care must be taken to make sure that their gym reflects the best environment for the Pokémon type and playing style of choice, usually an environment that suits that type of Pokémon used there (like pools in a Water-type gym or flowers and plants in a Grass-type gym). According to [[Morty]], teaching young people how to battle with Pokémon can also be the job of a Gym Leader. In the games, Trainers must overcome various obstacles and challenges from other Trainers before they can challenge the Leader. Gym Leaders may also be involved in other activities when they are not battling other Trainers or training themselves, usually something to do with their town's particular attraction or landmark. Gym Leaders can also leave their gyms without notice (as {{ga|Blue}}, [[Giovanni]], [[Jasmine]], and [[Wallace]] do), and even challenge other Gyms and the [[Elite Four]] (like [[Volkner]] wanted to do). In later games, it is made apparent that Gym Leaders know each other and are acquainted with Gym Leaders from other regions, and some travel to other regions: [[Jasmine]] travels to [[Sinnoh]] to take part in [[Pokémon Super Contest|Super Contests]], and is friends with [[Erika]].

It has not exactly been made clear how Gym Leaders attain their position, but it appears that it varies for each gym. Some of them founded their gym and are self-appointed, others appear to be passed on through families, while a few are chosen by the other members of the region's Pokémon League. Leaders can also choose to vacate their position: reasons for this can vary. {{ga|Blue}} is a former [[Champion]] appointed to be leader of [[Viridian Gym]] when [[Giovanni]] vacates the position, while in the anime [[Agatha]] takes Giovanni's place as a temporary leader. [[Koga]] was the leader of [[Fuchsia Gym]] until he was promoted to a member of the Elite Four; his daughter [[Janine]] replaces him as the leader. [[Wallace]] vacated his position in [[Sootopolis Gym]] when he became Champion, leaving his mentor [[Juan]] to take his place. [[Falkner]]'s father is also mentioned to have been the leader of [[Violet Gym]] before Falkner took the position. [[Roark]]'s father [[Byron]] is a Gym Leader like Roark himself, but the two operate entirely different Gyms within the same league.

Sinnoh is the only region where all the Gym Leaders are in cities, unlike previous generations where at least one is in a town (or Island ([[Generation I]]))

In [[Pokémon Adventures]], {{adv|Red}} and [[Falkner]] have to battle with Pokémon set by the Pokémon League, where those Pokémon are not controlled by Trainers and the challenger is not allowed to let any of his Pokémon faint.

Although similar in nature, [[Frontier Brain]]s are not considered Gym Leaders and are thus not included in this list.

Of course it is. JAPANESE IS GOOD AND ENGLISH IS BAD. Jimu Riidaa is obviously a different phrase than Gym Leader, and NoA CHANGED IT AND BASTARDISED IT when they translated the games! Just like Kurisutaru and Crystal are also DIFFERENT WORDS and so are Reddo/Red, and so forth. --Ketsuban

So last night I was really bored and decided to see any patterns in the Gym Leaders, along with some awkward stuff too..

*There are *usually* 4 females, and 4 males, however [[Johto]] breaks this rule, with 3 girls and 5 males. Unless Bugsy is a girl.
*Hoenn, has 4 Special-typed gyms, and 4 Physical-typed gyms. Hell, the gender is split evenly along Special and Physical, with 2 females and 2 males specializing in Special-type, and vice versa. Otherwise, the amount of Special-based and Physical-based are uneven.
*There was something else, but I can't remember it at this moment.

In this article, it puts Pryce as the 7th gym leader. I battled him before Chuck or Jasmine-because I hadn't even gotten to their respective cities yet. In HG/SS, you can battle Chuck, Jasmine, and Pryce in any order you choose. Due to the fact that the road splits after Morty, you can battle any of the three in any order you want. I personally battled Jasmine before Chuck. It all depends on where you want to go. If you are not sure which way to go, look at the Pokegear and the strategy guide if you have it. If there is a Pokemon you want, (because you might still be building your party to how you want it) then go the path that leads you there the quickest. In Kanto, I went the route suggested and beat 4 Gyms in one day and 3 the next. It was all based on my thought process at the time. It is like so many things in Pokemon, it is all based on decision.

== Yellow Trainer Sprites ==

There is an extremely lack of Yellow non-species sprites both in the archives and in usage throughout the Internet. As I searched google, I could not find one site with the unique Yellow Trainer sprites. That being said, I have whipped back out my Yellow ROM and am capturing Trainer sprites, removing backgrounds with Pixen, and saving them as PNGs to upload onto Archives so that we can have the Yellow Trainers. For example, Brock looks different in Yellow than in RGB, GSC, or FRLG (though the second two sets are a bit obvious). The GSC Red and GSC Blue sprites are based upon the Yellow sprites, but the colours are different. Jessie and James are ONLY in Yellow. These sprites should be here, but they're not. I suggest there should be some sort of guide on the project page on how to write, order and format Character articles to keep them all looking neat and consistent. == Two questions: content order and missing character ==

So I was browsing Team Magma and Aqua character articles, and I see that Maxie's headers go Game, then Anime, and Archie's go Anime, then Game. Maxie's seemed far more appeasing with that order, so I wound up switching Archie's headers, and I think it's better for it. So why /isn't/ the default that Games come before Anime?

Sure, the old argument is "people are looking for the anime sections first" but I don't think that's true. Nor calculable. In some cases, where the templates for the game characters get incredibly out of hand (rivals), it's easier to put the anime section on top; otherwise, it would get lost among the tables and load-time. Except load-time won't make a difference: either you're stuck waiting for it to load so you can scroll twice/thrice, or hit END and scroll up a few times, so it's also not about lag.

I do think game characters (for those that can) should have their game biographies before their anime one. It's the natural order, in most cases. Games precede anime, and both precede manga.

Wally was a sick young boy who asked [[Norman]], the Petalburg [[Gym Leader]], to help him catch a Pokémon before he moves to [[Verdanturf Town]] to live with his aunt and uncle.

[[Norman]] allowed his child, the {{player}} of {{game2|Ruby|Sapphire|Emerald}} to assist Wally, and loaned Wally a {{p|Zigzagoon}}.

Using this, Wally was able to capture a {{p|Ralts}}. This is the catching tutorial of Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald. Ironically, it is the player who is teaching Wally to catch Pokémon.

Wally later shows up again in [[Mauville City]], pleading with his uncle to let him challenge [[Wattson]]. He battles the player to prove his strength, but loses.

Wally eventually runs away from home and challenges the player at the end of {{ho|Victory Road}} in [[Ever Grande City]], seemingly totally recovered from his illness. He remains there, and it is possible to fight him several times per day.

According to the {{DL|PokéNav|Trainer's Eyes}}, Wally's strategy is "We let it all hang out." Wally's favorite type of Pokémon is "{{p|Ralts|The 1st Pokémon I caught}}", and his self-introduction is "Pokémon and I have grown stronger together".

Wally's first Pokémon was a Ralts that {{adv|Ruby}} loaned him, and a {{p|Kecleon}} he caught himself. His "starter" Pokémon was a {{p|Treecko}} which he rescued after [[Professor Birch]] lost it in a flood.

Wally asked Norman to teach him about Pokémon and help him catch one, but Norman refused after seeing how sickly Wally was.

Ruby seemed to take quickly to Wally, possibly because Norman didn't like Wally, and decided to help the other boy. Ruby loaned Wally his Ralts, nicknamed "Ruru", and Wally was able to capture a Kecleon.

Unfortunately, before Ruru could be returned to her rightful owner, an earthquake caused Ruby to fall into the sea.

The next time Wally is seen, he is rescuing the old man who looks for [[Mirage Island]] in Pacifidlog Town, from {{p|Kyogre}}'s flood. It would seem that Wally had managed to recover much from his illness by then, and had been traveling around [[Hoenn]] for quite some time.

Norman, who had just been passing by, finally agreed to take Wally on as a student, and told him to come to the [[Sky Pillar]].

There, Norman revealed that what he had been training Ruby for since he was very young was to help Norman awaken {{p|Rayquaza}}. Norman could only accomplish this with someone the size of a 10-year old boy.

Even though he's healthier, Wally wears a suit with a respirator built into it, showing that his sickness could be some form of asthma.

Wally acquired his {{p|Cacnea}} while traveling through the desert, his Roselia on {{rt|117}}, and Norman gave him his {{p|Flygon}}. Most of this occurred off-panel.

Wally was once believed to be a representation of {{v2|Emerald}} because of his all-green team and mainly green wardrobe. However, he's not a [[Pokédex Holder]] and he debuted long before any announcements of Pokémon Emerald appeared, which means he was never intended to be Emerald representation. Due to that, a [[Emerald (Adventures)|new character]] was created for that role.

* Though he is never classified as a "rival" in the games themselves, Wally essentially takes the place of {{ga|Brendan}}/{{ga|May}} as the player's rival after he/she decides to help with [[Professor Birch]]'s studies rather than be a competitive Trainer.
** This also makes him the only rival who is not related to a celebrity or well-known trainer, unlike {{ga|Blue}} ([[Professor Oak]]), {{ga|Silver}} ([[Giovanni]]), {{ga|May}}/{{ga|Brendan}} ([[Professor Birch]]), and {{ga|Barry}} ({{FB|Tower Tycoon|Palmer}}).
* He shares the same Chinese name with {{ga|Dawn}}.
* Wally is the only [[rival]] character to not have a Pokémon received from the professor of that region, not counting {{ga|Silver}}, who stole his.
* Wally's anime counterpart can loosely be [[Drew]], since they look like each other and have green hair. However, it is not confirmed.
