Red (Japanese: レッド Red) is the canon name of the player character in the Generation I games and the male choice in their Generation III remakes FireRed and LeafGreen, where his female counterpart is Leaf.

Red is known throughout Kanto and Johto as the Champion from Pallet Town, as well as for his defeat of Team Rocket in Kanto during his quest. He is the final opponent in the Generation II games Gold, their Generation IV remakes HeartGold and SoulSilver, and Stadium 2.

In the games
Red is introduced as a curious 10-year-old boy from Pallet Town in the instruction manuals of Red, Green, and Blue, having gained an interest in Pokémon after his best friend, Blue, stopped playing with him and became a bully. His adventure begins one day when Professor Oak calls the two to his lab for a choice of a starter Pokémon, the last three Pokémon Oak owns. Blue challenges Red to a battle immediately, to test out his new Pokémon, thinking he will easily beat Red.

After Red has journeyed to Viridian City to the north and taken a package back to Oak in Pallet, Oak gives Red and Blue each a Pokédex with which to record data on all known Pokémon in the Kanto region. From here, Red and Blue journey across Kanto, collecting Pokémon to build up their teams, and defeating each of the Gym Leaders in turn, with Blue always one step ahead, showing up from time to time to impede Red's progress.
Red also comes across a gang of Pokémon thieves, Team Rocket, several times through his journey, defeating a group of Team Rocket Grunts who are trying to steal fossils from Mt. Moon, a member who is running the Nugget Bridge challenge to recruit for the organization on 24, and another lone member who has stolen a TM from a family in Cerulean City. Eventually, Red uncovers a plot by Team Rocket, infiltrating their hideout beneath the Celadon Game Corner and encountering their boss, Giovanni. Defeating him and ousting Team Rocket from Celadon, Red uses the Silph Scope that Giovanni leaves behind to battle Ghost Pokémon and save Mr. Fuji in the Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town, who is being held hostage by a trio of Grunts. Red soon journeys into Saffron City in the heart of Kanto to find it overrun by Team Rocket, who is attempting to take the recently-invented Master Ball from the Silph Co. President, and defeats Giovanni again, ending the group's plots for the time being.

With seven badges in hand, Red encounters Giovanni for the final time—this time as the Leader of the Viridian Gym, his final obstacle before the Elite Four of the Indigo Plateau. Red defeats him in battle, earning his eighth and final badge—the Earth—and causing Giovanni to realize that he has no chance at reviving Team Rocket if he cannot defeat Red. He disbands the organization, promising to go into solo training to better himself.

Making it through Victory Road and finally to the Indigo Plateau, Red defeats the Elite Four and discovers, to his surprise, that Blue has defeated them before him and is the Champion. Red defeats Blue in the final battle, becoming the Champion himself, but then continues his training, rather than staying at the Indigo Plateau. Encountering an offshoot of Team Rocket in the southern Sevii Islands, Red reveals with his Earth Badge that Giovanni has disbanded the organization, and though defeated the group there intends to revive Team Rocket and bring Giovanni back, having already made plans to force Pokémon to evolve with radio waves. Red continues as a wandering Trainer, eventually making his way to the caves of Mt. Silver, where he trains his Pokémon alone.

Eventually, Ethan, Kris, or Lyra arrives at Mt. Silver and challenges Red, identified only as a Pokémon Trainer. Red vanishes from Mt. Silver, and returns every time the Elite Four is defeated again by the player of Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, or SoulSilver.

Pokémon
As the player character, Red can have on his team any of the 151 Pokémon available during Generation I. In Generation III, he can have any of the 386 Pokémon available at that time, though only after the player has obtained the National Pokédex.

When he is encountered as an opponent in Generation II and Generation IV, Red has a set team, based on Generation I in-game event Pokémon, and has the highest leveled Pokémon yet encountered in the series, with his Pikachu at level 81 in Generation II and at level 88 in Generation IV.

Red's hat appears in Super Smash Bros. Melee as an alternate outfit worn by Pikachu, possibly in reference to the anime or Pokémon Adventures.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Red himself appears as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, named only as "Pokémon Trainer", with a team consisting of Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard. Rather than fighting himself, like the other human characters, Red sends his three Pokémon into battle, switching between them in order. His home stages, like the other Pokémon characters in the game, are Pokémon Stadium, Pokémon Stadium 2, and Spear Pillar. He is voiced by Michele Knotz in the English version and 半場友恵 Tomoe Hanba in the Japanese version.

In terms of gameplay, Squirtle is an agile and quick attacker, but it is somewhat weaker than the other two and is much more easily knocked back. Ivysaur is a good all-around fighter, but its attacks lack range and it has poor aerial ability. Charizard is the most difficult to knock away, and has excellent recovery, but its attacks are slow, albeit powerful.

Red's Final Smash is Triple Finish, a combination of Squirtle's Hydro Pump, Ivysaur's SolarBeam, and Charizard's Fire Blast.

Squirtle
Subspace Emissary
The Pokémon Trainer is first encountered by Lucas in the Ruined Zoo. For most of the game, the two are paired together. Pokémon Trainer's mission is to capture Charizard and Ivysaur while Lucas's is to save Ness. On their way to the Ruins, the two are ambushed by Wario, who is eventually defeated by the two. Later in The Ruined Hall, they are attacked by Galleom. Once defeated, it sets off a time bomb. Lucas saves Pokémon Trainer and they are then both saved by Meta Knight who carries them away from the explosion, which sucks up Wario's trophy into Subspace. From then on the two join Meta Knight, Marth, and Ike on their quest to take down the Subspace Army.

Codec information (on Shadow Moses Island)
:Solid Snake: "Pokémon Trainer... That's the guy giving orders behind a Pokémon, right?"
They represent water, grass, and fire, and they're all powerful."
:Solid Snake: "So he makes his Pokémon fight while he sits back and watches. Sounds like a good deal if you ask me."
Those Pokémon wouldn't know what to do if the Pokémon Trainer wasn't there giving orders. In every battle, there's a soldier doing the fighting, and a commander telling him what to do. By working together as a team, they accomplish much more than either could on their own. So let's do this together, partner."
:Solid Snake: "...Yeah... Whatever you say, Colonel."

Trophy information
Pokémon Trainer
A person who raises Pokémon and trains them as partners in battle. In battle, a Trainer gives orders to the Pokémon and uses items. It's not an exaggeration to say battles can be won or lost on a Trainer's single strategic move. Trainers pour their hearts into their Pokémon and share anger, sadness, and joy as they adventure in hopes of becoming Pokémon Masters.
Triple Finish
The Final Smash of the Pokémon Trainer. Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard join forces to simultaneously use Hydro Pump, SolarBeam, and Fire Blast. This is the only time all three of them appear on the screen together, so this move boasts the strength of three in one. A window will appear on the screen saying "It's Damage modification!" when the attack hits.

In other games
Red makes an appearance in both Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. While he does not appear in the games' Story Mode, he is playable in the Battle Mode when a FireRed or LeafGreen cartridge is used, with a male player character chosen. He can take on the Mt. Battle's 100-battle challenge, as well as compete in Colosseum battles. Red also made a brief appearence in the debut trailer of Pokémon Battle Revolution, having a double battle against Leaf, using a Deoxys on its Attack Forme and a Wailord. Despite this, he didn't appear in the final cut of the game.

In the TFG
Next Quest appears as a common Trainer figure in the launch set, Next Quest, of the Pokémon Trading Figure Game.

In the anime
Ash Ketchum

While Red himself does not appear in the anime, his counterpart, introduced in the first episode, is the anime's main character, Ash Ketchum. Like Red, Ash is from Pallet Town, on a journey to become a Pokémon Master. Unlike Red, Ash's journey did not end with Kanto, and Ash has continued through every other region introduced in the main series games, as well as the Orange Archipelago south of Kanto, taking the place of the player characters of Generation II during Johto, and being joined by the anime counterparts of May and Dawn during the Hoenn and Sinnoh sagas. Instead of starting with one of the standard three Kanto starters, however, Ash began his journey with a Pikachu, inspiring Yellow's creation, as well as causing some to consider Red and Ash to be the same person, most especially due to Red owning Red's Pikachu as well.

In the manga
Red, like most player characters, also has counterparts in the various Pokémon manga, with Red from the Pokémon Adventures manga, Satoshi from Pokémon Zensho manga, Isamu Akai from Pokémon Pocket Monsters manga, and Shū from Pokémon Get da ze! manga being among them.

Trivia
* When Red is encountered in Mt. Silver during Generation II, he has no speech, merely repeating an ellipsis before beginning the battle. This is a reference to the fact that during Generation I he is a silent protagonist, answering only "yes" or "no" questions. He also remains silent when confronted in Generation IV.
**Ironically, in , Blue calls him a chatty gossip. However, this is probably sarcasm.
* Much like there is minimal information on his anime counterpart's father, Red's father is mentioned only in passing when examining a Super Nintendo Entertainment System in the Celadon Department Store.
* Until the release of Platinum, Red's team featured the highest-leveled opponent Pokémon a player could face outside of battle arenas such as the Stadium series and the Battle Frontier, with his Red's Pikachu at level 81, beating the wild Arceus found at the Hall of Origin by one level. In Platinum, however, the Barry's team receives a boost in level, putting his starter Pokémon at level 85, while wild Magikarp can be found in the Resort Area at up to level 100. Due to HeartGold and SoulSilver giving Red's team a level boost as well, with his Pikachu topping the list at level 88, Red is again the highest-leveled Trainer opponent (though wild Magikarp still are the highest level opponent Pokémon).
** Although the rival's Pokémon were at a higher level, however, several of Red's Pokémon had higher stats, due to their species' higher base stats, with his Charizard being the strongest (the rival's possible Infernape comes closest, mere points behind).
* In the Super Smash Bros. series, Pokémon Trainer is the second Pokémon character, after Pikachu, that didn't need to be unlocked.
*In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, somewhat ironically, Charizard is the slowest character, even though the Charmander evolution family has an exceptionally high Speed stat compared to the other two Kanto starters.
* Red's team in Generation II and Generation IV is based heavily on in-game events from Generation I and FireRed and LeafGreen: Charizard, Venusaur, Blastoise, and Pikachu are the version mascots of the four Generation I games, and are as well available in all iterations of the Kanto storyline; Espeon could have been obtained as an Eevee in Celadon City (and serves as Blue's starter Pokémon in Pokémon Yellow), Lapras is given away by a Silph Co. employee shortly before Team Rocket is vanquished there, and two Snorlax are required to be caught or defeated to travel to Fuchsia City (in Generation II and HeartGold and SoulSilver, only one Snorlax is found blocking the way in Kanto, indicating a possible connection that Red caught one and defeated the other).
** Likewise, the four version mascots Red owns all know their signature moves: Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise know Frenzy Plant, Blast Burn and Hydro Cannon respectively, while Pikachu knows Volt Tackle.
** Red's Pikachu's four moves are the same four moves that Ash's Pikachu uses most frequently in the anime: Volt Tackle, Quick Attack, Iron Tail, and Thunderbolt.
** Red's Generation II team was also the same as that of Red in the Pokémon Adventures manga during his venture to Mt. Silver - while he didn't own Charizard and Blastoise, he borrowed them for a time from Blue and Green respectively. However, Red did not own a Lapras as he does in Generation IV.
* An unused default name for Red in the English Generation I games was "NINTEN". Conversely, Blue's unused default name is "Sony". While normally unviewable, changing a few addresses within the game's code can allow for these names to appear as shown here. This references the fact that in the years surrounding the releases of the Generation I games, Sony was Nintendo's main competition, and may possibly reference the Ninten of another Nintendo RPG developed by Creatures, Inc., Mother (video game).
* Hidden name data for Red in the Japanese Generation I games include: やまぐち Yamaguchi for the player and いしはら Ishihara for the rival in Red and Green. Yamaguchi refers to Wataru Yamaguchi, an art director on the original games, while Ishihara refers to Tsunekaz Ishihara, who is now the head of The Pokémon Company. In Pokémon Blue, the player's unused default name is ゲーフリ Gēfuri, an abbreviation of Game Freak's Japanese name ゲームフリーク Gēmu Furīku. As for the rival, his name is クリチャ Kuricha, in what it seems a reference to Creatures, Inc. As for Yellow, it preserved the rival's name from Pokémon Blue; however, for an unknown reason, the player's name was subtly altered by gaining an extra digit, becoming "ゲーフリ１". For more information, see this article.
* The majority of his Japanese default names from are shared with Ethan and Lucas. The same holds true for their Leaf Lyra Dawn.
* All of the three Kanto starter Pokémon used in his Generation II battle have the moves that appeared on their Base Set cards.
* In HeartGold and SoulSilver, apart from his Venusaur and Blastoise being fully evolved, Red's team is identical to that of Ash Ketchum throughout most of the Orange Islands anime arc (Ash's Bulbasaur and Squirtle were at the time, and still are presently, in their base forms).
* Meganium and Jolteon are the only two of Red's female Pokemon in Pokémon Stadium 2.
* Red's Generation II sprite is a colorized and mirrored version of his sprite from Yellow. The same thing occurred to his rival, Blue.
* Red, along with Blue and Prof. Oak, appears in all generations so far either as an NPC or as a playable character, except for Generation V.
Incorrect Translation
<I>While no beta Pokémon remains in the coding, it is interesting to note that the official website for Super Smash Bros. lists a character from the Pokémon franchise called ポケモンのだれか, whose name translates to "Who of Pokémon?". It is possible that the name was used as a "cover-up" to not reveal the name of an unused Pokémon. However, it can also mean that it just sends out a random Pokémon, as there are other obscure characters in the list, such as James Bond and Ash Ketchum. </i>
<br>---<p>
... It says "Somebody from Pokemon". ("Some Pokemon" would probably be a smoother translation.)
People who barely speak japanese (if at all) should not be jumping to conclusions. Contextually, the meaning is pretty clear.
Now that I look at this website further, it's just an opinion poll. "Most desired characters if they made a sequel to Smash Bros" (Hence characters like Ash Ketchum and James Bond [goldeneye was popular at the time] appearing). So really it's completely irrelevant. Lugia was probably on the list because he already existed in japan.
Identifiers/Index Numbers 00 (0) to 0A (10) are the main towns and cities such as Pallet Town, Pewter City, Viridian City etc. 0C (12) is the first route i.e. Route 1. Noticing this I developed a Gameshark code 010B5ED3 for use on Pokémon Red/Blue to take the player to location #11 (0B). It crashes the game if you activate the code when entering through a door but if you force the game to display it on the Town Map it is directly north of the Pokémon League, do you think this is probably just a pure coincidence? Should we change the title of the article from "Pokémon Red and Green beta" to "Generation I beta" or something to that effect? ::"The beta?" In general the original assumption of there actually being a single 'beta version' of a Pokémon game with each and every feature known of that game is quite speculative. There is no solid proof but game developers usually do not simply produce two versions of the game (e.g. pre-release and release). Instead, they usually save many revisions (versions) of the game, for example lots of prototype versions of many of the classic Sonic games have been leaked, even those for the same game. There's also the distinction between Alpha and Beta; Alpha denotes when testing techniques are very brief and the product is not feature complete (note planned features are not always the only final features). Borderline between Alpha and Beta is probably what you mean, although many features are often added (or removed) in later Beta stages too, maybe due to technical limitations or a good 'brain-wave'.

::I'd prefer that we just move every page to "Prototype and scrapped features of (Game Series)". --Chickasaurus 17:19, 8 September 2010 (UTC)

: I say it's best as it is. Why?
First, we have a format. And that format is to have articles for each individual game, not for whole generations. If we change this into "Generation I Beta", then we'd have to merge GS and Crystal's Beta articles into one single article with the name "Generation II Beta", and even worse, all the Gen III and IV games, to keep consistency, and we know that would not be the best move. It's better to leave it as it is for the sake of consistency.
Second, Red and Blue is Red and Green with different names and translated text, not different games. I don't eat the universal assumption that they are different games, since they retain Red and Green's version exclusive Pokémon and even keep glitches that were not present anymore in Blue but were in Red and Green (Missingno.); the only thing that was carried over from Blue was its graphics and the evolving Raichu text in Cinnabar, but otherwise, their still Red and Green with Blue's updated graphics. Calling them different games just because of minor changes would be like considering Kin and Gin different games from Gold and Silver because of the Teddiursa and Phanpy lines as vesion exclusives being switched from the Japanese versions -it just don't make sense.
Third. The "exclusive English Red and Blue beta content" consists in translated text only ("The BROCK" and different Pokémon names), not actual elements of their own, so it doesn't really count as beta for different/new games, but rather as beta text for a LOCALIZED VERSION OF THE ORIGINAL GAMES.
With all of this in mind, it can be well concluded that Japanese Red and Green (or Aka and Midori if you prefer) and International Red and Blue are the same game, not different ones, thus, is there still any true reason left to rename the article? The best we can do in my opinion is to rename it "Red, Green AND BLUE Beta" and split the exclusive Yellow beta content (is there actually any beta content exclusive to Yellow in the article?) into a separate article to keep up with the other generations' beta articles. ::@"is there actually any beta content exclusive to Yellow in the article?". :::Actually, our Red and Blue's game engine is derived from the Japanese Blue version which was notably different than that of the original Red and Green. Though, calling this article "Pokémon Red and Green beta" is potentially misguiding because it implies that all of the unused elements of Red/Blue/Yellow were originally planned to be included in the original Red/Green to begin with, which would be speculation if anything because of the (exclusive) unused content within Pokémon Yellow; it doesn't exist in the newer Pokémon Red/Blue engine, neither the original Pokémon Red/Green. I don't see a problem with making a separate article for Pokémon Yellow, we have "Pokémon Crystal Beta" which would be of about the same size of a "Pokémon Yellow Beta" (though I prefer we just use something in the title like 'unused content' instead of beta, we have concept art which is more likely to be alpha/pre-alpha content) . --Chickasaurus 20:11, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

:::I acknowledged the fact that our Red and Blue were made from Blue's engine, but IN CONTENT, they are still Red and Green (I detailedly explained why I consider it that way), plus there are no Japanese Blue nor English Red and Blue exclusive TRUE beta elements (aside from text translations in the case of the English RB), so my point still stands, and thus, I keep my suggestion: in my opinion, the best is to rename the article, but not "Gen I beta", but rather into "Red, Green and Blue beta" (since Red and Blue are nothing but debugged versions of Red and Green, not independent games) and split the Yellow elements into a separate article like those of Crystal, Emerald and Platinum.Veggietable 05:24, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
:Actually yes that's right, "The" included prior to a trainer class didn't have an equivalent transliteration "ザ" in the original Red and Green, though Veggietable acknowledges this. Are you also trying to suggest that added text (unused of course) (but not direct transliterations) aren't notable too Veggietable? Some of the temporary placeholder names used in American promotions like "Ness" for Lapras weren't direct transliterations of the Japanese names. Also, thought someone would be interested, transliterated (though it might not be actually?) text in only the localized Red/Blue outside of Japan refers to an old in-game trade exclusive to Japanese Blue, where you receive a Beedrill but it's now referred to as "CHIKUCHIKU". --Chickasaurus 17:40, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
:: I already DID aknowledged that the "The BROCK" addition in the international versions as American-original, but that comes because of the different sentence structures in Japanese and English, where a pronoun isn't needed in Japanese but is in English, so, while still "original" material in the beta English releases, it derives from translation issues, and thus, my original point (which is that all the "changes" made in the international releases where made due to localization ) still stands and remains congruent. As I told a couple of times before, conseidering them separate games just for minor additions is not quite congruent, and going by this logic, Japanese and International versions of HGSS must be considered different games too (and as such, get separate articles or the article be renamed into "Generation II remakes") just because one has a Game Corner and the other has Voltorb Flip -it just don't make sense. Had Red and Blue kept Blue's CONTENT features (version exclusives, in-game trades, removal of Missingno., et al) or introduced brand-new features like Yellow did, then yes, I'd say they are differeht games and that the article must be splitted into "RG beta" and "RB beta" or me renamed "Gen I Beta", but it wasn't the case. That's why to avoid confusion I suggested (and I feel honored that my suggetsion was put on the main article) instead to rename it "Red, Green and Blue beta", thus acknowledging the identity of Blue and Red and Blue, if not as separate games, at least as different revisions of the game deserving mention in the article's title. If you still want the distintion to be made, the article could have a "localization beta" sub-section and put there the Pokémon names and the "The Brock" thing. To make it shorter, adressing your specific question of "Are you also trying to suggest that added text (unused of course) (but not direct transliterations) aren't notable too Veggietable?", my answer is: "I'm not saying that is not notable, just that it's not enough notable to be considered A DIFFERENT GAME", after all, international releases OF EVERYTHING are changed, because according to context, we can't always get direct translation/transilteration -we instead get adaptations, and such, names or sentences might be added or removed. If we considered everything that is not A DIRECT TRANSLATION to be a different entity dererving its own article, then half of the Pokémon must be considered different from their Japanese counterparts (it's like saying "Lizardon is already an English word so it didn't need anything more than a romaji transilteration, but instead we got Charizard; since they have different names, then it's original content and thus they must be different Pokémon"). Its the same: International Green got its named changed into Blue and got some changes ("The BROCK") due to localization, but nothing more. The in-game trade refering to a Blue event I think was a slip from the localization team caused by the use of Blue's engine, but the actual trade was still that of Red and Green, that's why I still consider them Red and Green. :::I actually like your idea, Veggie. Let's rename this to Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue beta and create Pokémon Yellow beta. And speaking of the latter, would it be something like this? <b><span style="color:green">ポケモン</span></b><b><span style="color:blue">あいこうか</span></b> 23:26, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
::::I'm not against your idea Veggie. [Actually it was from an in-game Japanese Blue exclusive trade (Butterfree for Beedrill) where "CHIKUCHIKU" is the Beedrill according to Meowth346 and the 39 MISSINGNO. were never removed in Japanese Blue].

::::I'm not trying to make any distinctions of unused content between Red/Green/Blue and the Japanese Blue such that they require different pages, I was just trying to outline what the differences were before jumping to any conclusions. I agree with your idea, that having a separate page for Japanese Blue would be similar to "making separate pages for Pokémon Kin and Gin", (there are a few dialogue strings which were never translated for Gold and Silver relating to a debugging interface in Japanese Kin and Gin but it doesn't matter). I was only suggesting that we use the format "Prototype and scrapped features of (XXX)" because concept art does not class as beta, it is alpha/pre-alpha content. I agree that we could have two separate articles about Red/Green/Blue, Yellow and implement any 'localization beta' content into their own sections. --Chickasaurus 12:54, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

:::::OK, Then I'm completely fine with it. So, who decides if the rename is done? By the way, Pokémon lover's draft for Yellow's article is very good to be honest. Veggietable 16:05, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
::::::Yellow beta got its article already, so should we move this to Red, Green, and Blue beta or not? It'd make sense if it was moved but I'm not sure who has the last word on this. And thanks for the compliment, Veggie. xD <b><span style="color:green">ポケモン</span></b><b><span style="color:blue">あいこうか</span></b> 20:08, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

Should I include this?
A tentative 'debug menu' can be accessed via the "Game Freak" screen. Only in Pokémon Yellow if the title screen is loaded with an invalid sound font a text box will appear below the "Game Freak" screen and the equivalent of the 'item obtained' sound will play, although the sound is only noticeable if the sound-font is quickly changed back to its usual default. The menu can be scrolled through, although the text is illegible and the only remaining option left for the player is to exit the menu. <references/>--Chickasaurus 18:15, 8 September 2010 (UTC)
