Ash's Grovyle (Japanese: サトシのジュプトル Satoshi's Juptile) was the second Pokémon caught by Ash during his travels through Hoenn. His voice actor in Japanese is 上田祐司 Yūji Ueda, and his English voice actor is Jimmy Zoppi.

Treecko was caught in the episode Tree's A Crowd! after Ash helped him in trying to save his old tree home; this event was follwed by a battle with Pikachu, and Ash caught him as a result of that battle. Treecko evolved into Grovyle in the episode Exploud and Clear while in the middle of a battle against a trainer's Loudred.

Unlike others of his species, Grovyle keeps a twig in his mouth, much like a 番長 banchō, juvenile gang leader, a character type that was common in manga and anime in the sixties and early seventies. He is also a bit of a loner, and can often be seen sitting solitary on the branch of a tree, resting or looking at the sky. Both of these habits are carried over from when Grovyle was a Treecko. Despite this, Grovyle is a competitive battler, almost never turning down a fight. Grovyle was one of five Pokémon that Ash took with him on his journey to the Battle Frontier.

Also, since it was a Treecko, Grovyle has had a will to strive and do better in each and every battle leading some to speculate that it will soon evolve into a Sceptile. Though no concrete evidence has led this statement to be true as of yet, many believe the perfect time would be in the upcoming episode Juptile VS Tropius! The Duel in the Grassland!!. That episode will be followed two weeks later by Jukain! Dawn of Revival!!, which is taken to support the idea that Grovyle will evolve (Jukain is the Japanese name for Sceptile).
It has been theorized that when one becomes a Pokémon Champion of a regional Pokémon League, one attains the title of master - however, this cannot be correct, as Ash won the Orange League without attaining the position. Indeed, other League Champions haven't ever been referred to as Pokémon Masters, either. Another theory is that, in the context of the anime, Pokémon Masters are the members of the Elite Four. However, even these characters are not always referred to as Pokémon Masters when Ash meets them.

Another popular theory is that one must catch one of every kind of Pokémon in the world to become a Pokémon Master, however this is likely to be incorrect as far as the Pokémon anime is concerned as well. For one, it would be impractial, as capturing Legendary Pokémon is both extremely difficult, and is often shown to be morally wrong. In addition, various negative and dangerous effects appear to come as a result of capturing Legendary Pokémon. While some Legendary Pokémon have willingly partnered with humans (for example, Articuno was befriended by Noland of the Battle Frontier and battled for him on occassion), it is highly implausible that anyone has ever convinced all of them to do so.

Aside from the Legendary issue, it would be impractical for anyone in the anime to capture and maintain 391 different creatures. Unlike the Pokémon games or Pokémon Special manga, in which Pokémon can be stored in suspended animation as computer data - Pokémon in the anime need t be fed and exercised regularly to maintain their health. Such a task would be impossible for anyone to perform alone, or even with many assistants or helpers.

So what defines a Pokémon Master? The answer may lie by looking at a real-life skill that also has trouble defining a master - martial arts. In that field, as in the world of Pokémon training, even winning tournaments, belts, and competitions doesn't define if someone has achieved the status of a "master". Instead, masters are defined more by inner character, inner strength, and intuition, rather than who has the most power or skills.

Indeed, a Pokémon Master may not be someone who has won a title, so much as it may simply be someone who has strived so dilligently, that Pokémon training and befriending Pokémon is intuitive.

According to the Electric Tale of Pikachu manga, a Pokémon Master is simply an elite trainer who is considered a professional and regularly takes part in League competitions.
Synopsis
Thanks to Murgatroyd for the synopsis.

Satoshi-tachi arrive at the local Pokémon Center shortly before a blizzard is expected to start. While they're talking to Joy, a Yukiwarashi comes in. Joy tells them it's a bit of a trickster, and frequently borrows things from visitors. At this point, they notice that it's holding Satoshi's badge case.
However, Joy tells Satoshi not to worry, that it always returns things before long. Satoshi is not inclined to wait, and has Pikachu and Heigani chase it down. When they have it cornered, Satoshi demands that it return his badges. It returns one badge, and uses Double Team to get away with the rest.

Meanwhile, TR is trudging through the snow outside, very hungry, as they haven't eaten for a day. Musashi has just collapsed in the snow when Kojirou spots the Pokémon Center. The thought of the food inside is enough to get Musashi moving again. Satoshi-tachi and Joy are searching the Pokémon Center for Yukawarashi, when they find another badge lying on the floor. Satoshi doesn't like the idea that it's returning his badges one at a time. Suddenly, Heigani charges off, and the others, suspecting that it has somehow sensed Yukiwarashi, follow.

They end up in the kitchen. Satoshi looks around, sees nothing, and shouts something along the lines of "We know you're hiding in here somewhere! Come out and give my badges back!" Very confused as to how he knew they were there, Team Rocket comes out from behind some boxes, food in hand (and in mouth). They deny any involvement with his badges, and say they weren't even doing anything wrong. All they did was sneak in and take food without permission. For some reason, Haruka and Joy are offended by this.

At about this time, Yukiwarashi comes out from behind another stack of boxes, and everyone's attention is off Team Rocket. Musashi and Kojirou don't like being ignored, and start shouting to get attention. They succeed, and when Joy yells at them about stealing the Center's food, Yukiwarashi suddenly becomes very serious and attacks them. Working together, Pikachu and Yukiwarashi defeat Team Rocket, Pikachu sends them flying, and Yukiwarashi opens a window to let them out.

Satoshi thanks Yukiwarashi for its help, and again asks for his badges back. It gets the case out, starts handing it over... then freezes Satoshi with Icy Wind and hops out the window. Satoshi breaks free from the ice and follows it. The others, realizing that the storm is going to start soon, set out to bring him back. Satoshi catches up with Yukiwarashi at the edge of a steep hill, where it dances around a bit to taunt him. The ice at the edge crumbles under its foot, and it ends up sliding out of control down the hill. Satoshi goes into his usual Rescue Mode, catches up with it, and when they're about to slide into a large rock, maneuvers them so that he takes the full impact on his back, protecting Yukiwarashi.

Satoshi is knocked out, and Yukiwarashi is unable to wake him. The storm has started. Takeshi, Haruka, and Masato return to the Pokémon Center without Satoshi. Satoshi wakes up to find himself in a snow cave with Yukiwarashi. He thanks it for saving him, and it gives him an apple. They share it, and Satoshi says something about how worried the others must be. Yukiwarashi gives him a couple more apples, then takes his hat and walks off into the storm.

At the Pokémon Center, it delivers the hat to the others. As soon as the storm is over, they ask it to lead them to Satoshi, and set off on snowmobiles.
They find Satoshi right where Yukiwarashi left him, and there is a reunion. As Satoshi once again asks Yukiwarashi to give his badges back, a giant hand comes out of nowhere and grabs both Yukiwarashi and Pikachu. It is, of course, Team Rocket.

Pikachu and Yukiwarashi are caught in boxes. Pikachu tries to escape with an electric attack, and as usual, fails. Musashi laughs, saying "Of course we made it strong against electricity". Yukiwarashi tries to escape with Icy Wind, and Kojirou laughs, saying "Of course we made it strong against... wait a minute..."

Yukiwarashi breaks out of the box. It uses Icy Wind against TR, but Musashi yells at Sounansu to "Do something!", and it uses what appears to be Mirror Coat. TR manages to escape in the balloon with their Pikachu-in-a-box.
Musashi and Kojirou are not very disappointed that their plan half failed. After all, they got Pikachu. They're not quite so happy when they find the twerps and Joy following them on the snowmobiles (following one of the usual Convenient Paths™ through the woods). TR manages to speed up, but Joy knows a way to catch up. This method apparently involves leaving the path, going through the woods at high speed, then going off a jump just as the balloon goes by. At the top of their trajectory, Satoshi throws Yukiwarashi at the balloon.

Yukiwarashi freezes Musashi, Kojirou, Nyasu, Sounansu, and the balloon itself, then jumps out with Pikachu-in-a-box before the balloon crashes down. Satoshi soon gets Pikachu out of the box, and with Pikachu and Yukiwarashi, defeats TR and their Pokémon, and sends them blasting off.

Yukiwarashi is *still* reluctant to return the badges. One of the group speculates that it doesn't want to, because it likes Satoshi and if it gave them back, he'd leave, and it wouldn't be able to play with him any more. Satoshi tries to solve the dilemma by inviting Yukiwarashi to come with him. Yukiwarashi responds with an unmistakable "you wanna fight?" motion. It may like him, but it isn't about to be captured without seeing if he's strong enough first.

Satoshi battles it with Pikachu. After a long fight, he wins, the last attack knocking the badge case away from Yukiwarashi. Satoshi throws a Monster Ball, beep beep beep, and he's caught it. The final scene is back at the Pokémon Center, with Yukiwarashi being introduced to all the group's Pokémon. Heigani gets a little too close and acts a little to aggressive, and gets frozen. Haruka has Wakashamo thaw Heigani with a Fire Spin, and Satoshi sits down for a little talk with Yukiwarashi about acceptable behavior.
Her Japanese name is a play on 巡査 junsa, police; policeman.

Officer Jenny is not a single entity. Rather, there are dozens and dozens of Jennies working as police officers across the regions.

As a rule, Officer Jennies are brave, determined, but ineffective police officers who fight against the likes of Team Rocket, Team Magma, and Team Aqua - along with miscellaneous other criminals.

They are not entirely identical, though aside from themselves, it seems that Brock is the only one who can tell them apart. However, each Jenny will have a different symbol on her hat that indicates location. There seem to be two Viridian Jennies, as during the Indigo Conference, two Jennies with the same hat symbol were seen side-by-side. (We know that the symbol in question--a star--indicates Viridian due to previous episodes.)

Supposedly, they are all extremely similar-looking relatives - cousins, sisters, etc. However, fans have proposed various other theories has been suggested for the strange phenomenon - everything from time travel to cloning. However, they are all voiced by 西村ちなみ Chinami Nishimura in the Japanese version.

Although there are many exceptions, Officer Jenny will generally have Growlithe to use as a police dog.

It would seem that the Officer Jenny family is related to the Nurse Joy family.

Ash's Squirtle was given to an Officer Jenny who fights fires. It is the leader of a group of four other Squirtles known as the "Squirtle Squad", who serve as the local firefighting team.
Trainers who defeat her receive the Cascadebadge. She specializes in Water-type Pokémon.
Her english name derives obviously from "mist". Her french one is "Ondine" that refers to "onde" (wave) or to "ondine", a kind of mermaid.

In the Anime
Misty is the youngest of four sisters who live in the Cerulean Gym. Fed up with her more glamourous older sisters, Misty left the gym with the goal of becoming the world's greatest Water Pokémon trainer. She met Ash when she "caught" him with her fishing line in a river near Viridian City. She travelled around with Ash, Brock, and Tracey through the Kanto region, Orange Islands, and Johto region. Her purpose was ostensibly to get Ash to replace her bicycle, which he had accidentally destroyed when they first met. However, Misty often seemed to have forgotten about the bicycle, indicating that her real reason for following along was that she simply wanted to remain with her friends. After Ash competed in the Johto League Silver Conference, however, the bicycle is repaired and returned to her by the Viridian City Nurse Joy. Misty was shown to be sad that she no longer had the convenient excuse to travel with Ash. In addition, her sisters Daisy, Lily, and Violet, called Misty at this time to tell her they were going on a world tour, and needed her to return to Cerulean and watch the Gym in their absence. Misty wanted to stay with Ash, but felt it was her responsibility to take over the Gym, which would be shut down if left unattended. Even after her sisters returned, Misty remained the sole Cerulean Gym Leader, as her they were never reliable in that role. Only Daisy (the eldest sister, and the one Misty is on the best terms with) seems to spend any significant amount of time at the Gym now that Misty has returned. Misty used to hate Gyarados because of a traumatic experience as a child in which she was nearly eaten by one, but she later overcame her fears and now uses a Gyarados as one of her primary Pokémon.

Misty's full name is often said by fans to be "Misty Waterflower", based on the title of the episode in which she is revealed as the Cerulean Gym Leader, but she is never actually referred to by that name in the anime. "Williams" is also listed as her last name on some websites. The writers of the show have confirmed that they do not know Misty's last name.

She is voiced by 飯塚雅弓 Mayumi Iizuka in Japanese, and by Rachael Lillis in the English dub.
Misty's title is "The Tomboyish Mermaid." Her strategy is an all-out attack with Water-type Pokémon.

Misty is constantly looking for ways to improve her technique. A swimmier herself, she trains at the Seafoam Islands.

As Misty becomes a stronger trainer, she becomes the only one in her town who can defeat the trainers at Cerulean's cape.

It is said that Misty has high hopes for the north cape, a romantic date spot. In later years, she is seen there with an unidentified boyfriend. She dislikes pests who bother her when she's on a date.

Misty worships Lorelei of the Elite Four.
Misty is one of the heroic Gym Leaders in Pokémon Special. She met Red while attempting to rescue her Gyarados from Koga of Team Rocket.

Red saved Misty's Gyarados, and she and Red ended up spending a lot of time together. Red eventually left, although Misty asked him to stay and train some more.

Red wanted to teach his Pokémon Surf, but the TM he tried to acquire was destroyed. So Misty traded him her Gyarados for Red's Krabby. Red still has Misty's Gyarados in his party to this day.

In Johto, during the second Team Rocket crisis, Suicune chose Misty to be its partner.

Misty seems to have a crush on Red. This is distinct from Misty's believed crush on Ash in the Pokémon anime, and in other manga.
After Ash competed in the Johto League Silver Conference, however, she returned to Cerulean to watch the Gym while her sisters, Daisy, Lily, and Violet, went on a world tour. Misty used to hate Gyarados because of a traumatic experience as a child, but she later overcame her fears and now uses a Gyarados as one of her primary Pokémon. Misty also officially took over as the sole Cerulean Gym Leader, as her sisters were never reliable in that role, and only Daisy (the eldest sister, and the one Misty is on the best terms with) seems to spend any significant amount of time at the Gym now that Misty has returned.

Misty's full name is often said by fans to be "Misty Waterflower", based on the title of the episode in which she is revealed as the Cerulean Gym Leader, but she is never actually referred to by that name in the anime. "Williams" is also listed as her last name on some websites.

Magus:

It is the goal of Ash Ketchum, as well as many other Pokémon trainers, to become a Pokémon Master, however - exactly what this position is and how one attains it is vauge and never fully explained.

However, these characters also have never been referred to as Pokémon Masters when Ash has met them.

The writers of the show have confirmed that they do not know Misty's last name.

She is voiced by 飯塚雅弓 Mayumi Iizuka in Japanese, and by Rachael Lillis in the English dub.

Drew (Japanese: シュウ Shuu) is a Pokémon Coordinator and May’s greatest rival. May and her friends first met him while she was practicing with her Beautifly on the beach near Slateport City in episode AG033. Like Ash’s main rival, Gary, Drew is portrayed as being confident, critical, and popular among his supporters, though generally not as overtly insulting as Gary initially was. However, also like Gary, he is not a villain by any means, despite how his comments and attitude may have angered May and her friends. His first match against May pitted her Torchic against his Roselia, only to have it end when Team Rocket interfered. Drew’s skills have been a continuing inspiration for May to better herself as a coordinator, so much so that seeing a different Roselia will remind May of her rivalry.

In Drew’s showing at the Slateport City Contest in episode AG035, he and his Roselia defeat May and Beautifly, but go on to lose to Robert and his Milotic. Drew shows up again for the Fallarbor Contest in episode AG050, where May learns that he has three contest ribbons. Before the Fallarbor Contest begins, Drew has his first battle against Ash, pitting his Roselia against Ash's Taillow. During the contest, however, he loses to Grace and her Medicham. Following the contest, Drew congratulates the winner, May, by giving her a rose. The gesture (which is repeated in later encounters) is seen by some fans to be a hint towards a romantic relationship between the two. Drew claims that the roses are for May's Beautifly, but the excuse seems to become more cursory each time.

In AG077, Drew is mobbed by the M.F.P. (Mothers for Pokémon) fan club at the Rubello Town Pokémon Center. Before the contest, May spots Drew practicing outside with his new Pokémon, Masquerain. May introduces Drew to her latest Pokémon, Bulbasaur. Masquerain is shown to be a Pokémon well-suited for contest battling, while Bulbasaur, though rare in Hoenn, embarrasses May with its lack of discipline. Drew wins his fourth ribbon in AG078 using his Roselia in the first round, and his Masquerain to defeat Sunny’s Girafarig and Savannah’s Lairon.

Because of his green hair and recurring appearances in the anime, some fans believe Drew to be the anime interpretation of the video game character Wally.
