The '''Johto region''' (Japanese: '''ジョウト地方''' ''Jōto-chihō'') is a large area located west of [[Kanto]]. Johto and Kanto are part of a large landmass, with everything west of [[Indigo Plateau]] falling in the Johto region. Though it is unlike Kanto in that its name is not directly based on that of a region of Japan, [[Junichi Masuda]] has come forward in his director's column naming the kanji that inspired the name mean "castle palace" (城都) or "lattice-shaped palace" (条都); this meaning is connected to the city of {{wp|Nara, Nara|Nara}}, which was the basis for [[Violet City]].

First explored in {{game|Gold and Silver|s}}, it is home to an additional 100 [[Pokémon]] that were not present in [[Generation I|previous games]]. After Johto was created, alongside [[Kanto]], by {{p|Groudon}} and {{p|Kyogre}} at the beginning of the {{pkmn|universe}}, Pokémon no one had seen before began inhabiting the region. 1500 years before [[Generation I]], the earliest known system for writing is developed and used at the [[Ruins of Alph]] of Johto. Archaeologists are currently unsure whether the nearly identical {{p|Unown}} preceded or succeeded the English alphabet, but it is assumed they share some sort of connection. Approximately 700 years ago, [[Tin Tower]] and [[Brass Tower]] are constructed in [[Ecruteak City]], and {{p|Lugia}} and {{p|Ho-Oh}} perch at their tops. It lived on for another 550 years before [[Brass Tower]] burns to the ground, killing three Pokémon inside. Lugia flees to the [[Whirl Islands]], Ho-Oh resurrects the three as the [[legendary beasts]] and flies off in search of a pure-hearted [[Pokémon Trainer|Trainer]].

Regardless of their proximity, the people of Johto and those of Kanto are set apart by many cultural differences. Johto is based on the real {{wp|Kansai region}} in Japan. This trait is most noticeable in its geography; however, the Kansai influence also defines the culture in Johto. Kansai residents are known for their attitudes against typical Japanese standards, mostly due to the historical rivalry between the region, once the major seat of political power, and the real {{wp|Kantō region}} where Tokyo, the current capital, is located. The soil of the Kansai region is rich, unlike the volcanic Kantō region, and this is perhaps referenced by the in-game Kanto region's inability to maintain a [[berry]] crop in [[Generation II]] and [[Generation III]]. People from Kansai are considered to be more relaxed. Kansai and Kantō, however different, are the two most important areas of Honshū, the largest island in Japan, and, much like Johto and Kanto, represent a harmony of contrasting cultures living together. The cultural divide is most noticeable in the games, as the player talks to and learns about the denizens of both regions.

Certain cultural aspects of the Johto region are deep-seated in Japanese history, as well. Kyoto, which is probably the basis for Ecruteak City, is considered the cultural center of Japan. Kyoto and its many historical temples, shrines, palaces, gardens and architecture have been preserved. This connection to history is reflected in many areas of Johto. However, Goldenrod City (like Osaka) is typically modern.

==In Generation IV==
Johto returns in [[Generation IV]]'s {{2v|HeartGold|SoulSilver}} much as [[Kanto]] returned in [[Generation III]]'s {{2v2|FireRed|LeafGreen}}, with its graphics boosted to the current level on the [[Nintendo DS]]. All areas from its Generation II iteration return, however, several new areas, such as Johto's own new {{jo|Safari Zone}}, and Battle Frontier are also added. Like in Generation III Kanto, a special image of a landmark is shown briefly when it is entered. Other than this, Johto remains for the most part much the same as it was.

==Synopsis==
{{Ash}} and {{Ashfr|his pals}} finally arrive in [[Eterna City]]. But on their way to [[Eterna Gym|the Pokémon Gym]], they hear the alarm going off at the [[Eterna Museum]], and the Eterna City [[Officer Jenny]] and her {{p|Stunky}} are summoned to investigate. The [[Adamant Orb]] has been stolen, and it shouldn't take a guess or two to figure out who's to blame -- [[Jessie]], [[James]] and {{MTR}} (disguised as a {{p|Sunflora}}) of [[Team Rocket]] are the wrongdoers behind the theft. Ash, {{AP|Pikachu}}, [[Brock]], {{an|Dawn}} and Jenny arrive to confront the robbers, but Jessie calls out {{TP|Jessie|Seviper}} and has Seviper use {{m|Haze}}. The crooks disappear, but the exits lock off.

More Police officers rush to the scene of the crime. [[Gardenia]] arrives at the investigation, and Ash and his friends say hello to her. Lovestruck Brock is immediately taking notice, but {{TP|Brock|Croagunk}} {{m|Poison Jab|jabs}} him. Gardenia tells Ash and his friends what the police told her-- the crooks used a {{type2|Grass}} to steal the Orb. Officer Jenny arrives with her first suspect-- [[Nando]]. Nando claims he isn't the crook because he came to the museum to find history of the Museum. Gardenia believes Nando's story, because she battled him earlier at her gym. Officer Jenny doesn't believe his story, because she has a picture of a Sunflora stealing the orb. Nando had a Sunflora with him, but it managed to sneak out of its [[Poké Ball]] before the police nabbed him. Nando is then brought in for questioning.

The Officer Jenny of [[Viridian City]] arrives and tells them it's her day off. The Viridian Jenny tells the Eterna Jenny that all Trainers with Sunflora must be investigated, and not just Nando, but the Eterna Jenny doesn't listen to her, and tells her not to get involved. Security Guards and Police Officers surround the museum. There wasn't a way for Team Rocket to get out with police everywhere, so they decide to fight their way out.

Gardenia explains that the Orb Team Rocket stole was somehow linked with the [[Dragon trio|legendary dragons]], {{p|Dialga}} and {{p|Palkia}}. Ash, Brock and Dawn set out to catch the crooks. Ash sends out {{AP|Aipom}}, {{AP|Staravia}} and {{AP|Turtwig}} and Dawn sends out {{TP|Dawn|Piplup}}, {{TP|Dawn|Pachirisu}}, {{TP|Dawn|Buizel}} and {{TP|Dawn|Buneary}} and they send them to search for the crooks. Meanwhile, in the interrogation room, Nando keeps trying to tell Jenny he is innocent, but Jenny continues to refuse to listen to him.

Nando's Sunflora, after sneaking out of its Poké Ball, is walking around the museum. Two Security Guards spot Sunflora, and Sunflora {{m|Leech Seed}}s them. Sunflora soon runs into Aipom and Turtwig, and seeds them, too. Sunflora quickly ducks into the vents. Ash and his pals find Aipom and Turtwig seeded, while the Security Guards, after having somehow freed themselves from the Leech Seed, report to Officer Jenny. In the room Team Rocket is hiding in, the Security Guards take a look inside. Team Rocket hides on the ceiling so the guards won't spot them. Then, the guards leave.

Team Rocket drops from the ceiling. The vent Sunflora is in leads into the room Team Rocket is hiding in. Pikachu and Piplup have caught Sunflora, but Sunflora tells them the Sunflora in the room Team Rocket is in, is really Meowth in disguise. When Team Rocket removes their disguises and replace them with new ones, they realize Sunflora is right! Piplup decides to attack, but Pikachu prevents Piplup from doing so. Pikachu runs back to tell Ash. Team Rocket spots Sunflora and Piplup, and {{TP|James|Cacnea}} attacks them with {{m|Pin Missile}}.

Meanwhile, Pikachu is leading Ash and co. to Team Rocket. Team Rocket, still in disguise, walks past them, trying to act nonchalant. Sunflora attacks them with a {{m|Razor Leaf}}, and their disguises fall off. Gardenia and Ash conclude that Nando's Sunflora isn't criminal, and that Team Rocket are the real criminals. After Team Rocket recites their [[Team Rocket motto|speech]], Ash and his friends demand they return the orb, but they refuse. Ash's Pikachu, Aipom, Staravia and Turtwig, Dawn's Piplup, Buneary, Buizel and Pachirisu, [[Brock's Sudowoodo]], Nando's Sunflora and [[Gardenia's Turtwig]] surround them, but they can't use their attacks, because they could harm the Adamant Orb.

The Eterna City Jenny and her Stunky arrive on the scene and Stunky sprays Team Rocket, filling the room with its stench. The Orb falls out of Jessie's hands, and Gardenia's Turtwig quickly responds with a {{m|Leaf Storm}}. The Orb lands in Gardenia's hands. Team Rocket makes a run for it while the pokémon surrounding them are holding their noses, but the cops who were surrounding the museum have them cornered. The stink starts to spread outside the museum, forcing the cops to cover their noses and thus allowing Team Rocket to escape. After that everyone outside is happy to have the Adamant Orb is returned. Ash still wants to knows the legend of the Dragon Trio.

{{Ash}} and {{ashfr|his friends}} board a train leading to [[Lake Acuity]]. Anticipating the 6-on-6 battle with [[Paul]], Ash shouted that he must win. An absent-minded man called [[Looker]] heard it and almost fell down. Brock, Ash, Dawn each caught a lunchbox. Ash asked him if he was alright, he replied yes. Brock asked him if the box lunch was the train station's best food. He gave the box lunch to them as a gift. He had said the wrong amount to the seller. The gang introduced themselves to Looker, and Looker introduced himself. Team Rocket, in disguise, also receives the box lunch from Looker. But Looker still had lots of food, so he decided to give it to the driver, his assistant and the driver's Pokémon. Brock told Ash that the Pokémon should be an {{type2|electric}} Pokémon.

As the train went on, the driver told an {{p|Ampharos}} to use {{m|Thunderbolt}}. The driver's assistant told the gang that Ampharos's energy charge up the train's power. The group is impressed by the cooperation between Ampharos and the driver. Looker hand the box lunch to them. Suddenly, the driver stopped the train as the traffic light shown red. While with Team Rocket, they said that they board this train in order to follow 'the twerps'. Then, they realized the train had stop. The driver received a call, saying that nothing was happening even though the light was red. The assistant said that it could be because there was a mishap that was still unannounced. The assistant and Looker decided to go outside and check. And the driver went to let the passenger know what had happened. The gang decided to eat their box lunch. The gang and their Pokémon begin eating. Team Rocket took this chance to steal all of the twerps' Pokémon. As they were about to leave their seat, the driver told them not to worry while they can watch the scenery. Jessie almost told the driver the whole thing about stealing the Pokémon, luckily Meowth covered her mouth. Meanwhile, Looker found out that if the track had not been used for a long time, there should be dust. The assistant replied that it should be a prank. The joint points also had been change. Looker also said that the person should must have a plan to stop them. The assistant told Looker to go back to the train, while he would go to the joint point to see. However, Looker went the other road.

Ash decided to train his Pokémon before the battle with Paul. Then, a strong wind brew, and all the Pokémon were suck in( expect Grotle and Manoswine). The gang saw Team Rocket in their balloon. Dawn told Team Rocket to return the Pokémon and Jessie replied, no. The driver told Ampharos to use {{m|Signal Beam}} on the balloon. All the Pokémon escaped but {{AP|Pikachu}}, {{TP|Dawn|Piplup}} and {{TP|Brock|Happiny}} were caught in a net. Ampharos jumped up to the net. The driver told Ampharos to destroy the remote control. But it burst a hole in the balloon. The balloon flew away, together with Team Rocket and the three Pokémon. Meanwhile, Looker saw a warehouse and he headed in. Ampharos used {{m|ThunderPunch}} on the net and let go of the three Pokémon. Then, Team Rocket and the balloon fell to the ground and they became unconscious.

Ash told {{AP|Staraptor}} to look for them. Pikachu and the rest came to a junction. Piplup proudly walk the front road with Happiny, but they came back soon after and they ran. Ampharos and Pikachu saw a group of {{p|Fearow}}, Pikachu uses Thunderbolt and Ampharos uses Signal Beam. But they dodged it. But Pikachu and Ampharos ran away too. They all came to a cliff and they jumped down. Soon, the Fearow flew away. The assistant received the driver's call and learned that the Pokémon had been stolen by Team Rocket.

But then, the Pokémon saw a big boulder blocking the way. Pikachu and Ampharos tried moving it but to no avail. Piplup laugh at them and uses {{m|BubbleBeam}} then {{m|Whirlpool}} but still could not move it. Then Happiny step forward and carried the boulder. It turned the boulder round and round and tossed it up to the sky. The boulder then fell into the river.

Also, Looker was inside that warehouse found out that the track leads directly to Lake Acuity. Then, he took out his detective's goggles and saw footprints on the floor. Then, he picked up a piece of paper.

Then, the Pokémon fell into another of Team Rocket's trap and later, got caught in a bag. Luckily, {{AP|Staraptor}} uses {{m|Aerial Ace}} on the bag. The Pokémon escaped. Team Rocket then decided to have a battle. They chose {{TP|James|Carnivine}} and {{TP|Jessie|Seviper}}. Then, {{TP|Brock|Sudowoodo}} uses a new attack, {{m|Hammer Arm}} at them. Then Pikachu finishes with {{m|Volt Tackle}}, sending Team Rocket blasting off.

In the evening, just before the sun set, the assistant, Looker and the gang returned to the train. Looker explained that he was looking at the scenery. Then, Ampharos uses Thunderbolt and the train was ready to move on. Ash explained that he could not wait for the battle with Paul. Looker heard it and wish him good luck.

Meanwhile, at the back of the train's carriage, Looker called someone, explaining that [[Team Galactic]] are moving something to Lake Acuity and he will continue to investigate. He took out the piece of paper that he found in the warehouse, and it showed Team Galactic's icon.
