The '''Alola''' region (Japanese: '''アローラ{{tt|地方|}}''' ''Alola {{tt|region|chihō}}'') is a [[region]] of the [[Pokémon world]]. It was the seventh [[core series]] region to be introduced and is the setting of [[Pokémon Sun and Moon|Pokémon Sun, Moon]], [[Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon|Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon]].

Alola is made up of five islands: the natural islands [[Melemele Island]], [[Akala Island]], [[Ula'ula Island]], and [[Poni Island]]; and the artificial island [[Aether Paradise]]. It is a popular resort destination and attracts a lot of tourists from other regions. In Alola, humans and [[Pokémon]] coexist in a very close relationship, and a culture has developed that is different from other regions.

[[Professor Kukui]] of Hau'oli offers the starter Pokémon known as Rowlet, Litten, or Popplio to Trainers beginning their journey of this archipelago.

They receive their starter Pokémon from [[Hala]] and meet [[Lillie]] and [[Hau]]. Elio/Selene receives a [[Z-Ring]]{{sup/7|S}}{{sup/7|M}}/[[Z-Power Ring]]{{sup/7|US}}{{sup/7|UM}} at the festival inaugurating their [[island challenge]], consisting of seven trials and four grand trials in order to become the island challenge champion. Along their journey, they encounter a group called [[Team Skull]], whose members are misfits who failed the island challenge and aim to cause trouble, as well as another group called the [[Aether Foundation]], whose goal is to cure hurt Pokémon. After defeating the leader of Team Skull, [[Guzma]], at the [[Shady House]], they learn that Lillie was taken away by Team Skull, and upon Gladion's request, Elio/Selene travel to [[Aether Paradise]] to rescue Lillie, where they battle [[Lusamine]], the president of the Aether Foundation who is also revealed to be Lillie and Gladion's mother. Lusamine opens [[Ultra Wormhole]]s across Alola and enters one with Guzma. Lillie reaches out to Elio/Selene for help and they intervene, dealing with several Rainbow Rocket Grunts in the altered Aether Paradise, as well as several past villainous Team Leaders in [[Archie]], [[Maxie]], [[Cyrus]], [[Lysandre]], and [[Ghetsis]], all coming from timelines where they were successful in their plans. Finally, they reach Lusamine's chamber and defeat Rainbow Rocket's [[Giovanni]], who then leaves the Paradise and restores it to normal after his defeat. The Alola region consists of four main islands: [[Melemele Island]], [[Akala Island]], [[Ula'ula Island]], and [[Poni Island]]. It also includes one artificial island, [[Aether Paradise]], described as a "Very Large Floating Structure" or VLFS. [[Player]]s can travel between the islands via boat, the [[Poké Ride]]'s {{p|Charizard}} Glide, and [[Mantine Surf]]; it is not possible to use the Poke Ride's {{p|Lapras}} Paddle or {{p|Sharpedo}} Jet to move between the islands. (It is also impossible to use {{m|Surf}} or {{m|Fly}} for inter-island travel, since these moves cannot be used outside of battle in [[Generation VII]].) All four natural islands are, to an extent, forested and mountainous. Most of these islands' cities and towns are on the coast, with the notable exceptions of [[Iki Town]] and [[Paniola Town]]. Routes are relatively developed here compared to other regions, with several of them having their own [[Pokémon Center]]s in addition to residential buildings.

Though steeped in nature, Melemele Island, in the northwest of the archipelago, has the least extreme environments. It is home to Alola's largest settlement, [[Hau'oli City]]. Its routes gently slope up towards the center of the island to form a gradual mountain, on top of which are the [[Ruins of Conflict]]. A notable Melemele Island landmark is [[Ten Carat Hill]], which was formed out of an underwater volcano and has an open-air hollow in the middle, itself resembling a volcano.

Akala Island, in the northeast of the archipelago, contains Alola's only active volcano, in [[Wela Volcano Park]]. It also has the most settlements of the four natural islands. Its largest city, [[Heahea City]], boasts several huge resort hotels, such as the [[Hano Grand Resort]], which has its own beach and golf course. A notable Akala Island landmark is [[Brooklet Hill]], which has cascading waterfalls that give off the impression of a terrace field.

Ula'ula Island, in the southeast of the archipelago, is the largest of Alola's islands. It is also the most varied in terms of weather and terrain, with significantly rougher terrain areas than other islands. For such a large island, it has few settlements: [[Malie City]], the largest city in Ula'ula; [[Tapu Village]], destroyed by the [[Tapu]] a long time ago, contains just a [[Pokémon Center]]; and [[Po Town]], occupied by [[Team Skull]]. These settlements all sit in the shadow of a contiguous mountain range in the heart of the island, which includes three mountain peaks and a harsh desert. On the southwest coast of the island is a large lagoon with [[breakable rock]]s that the Poké Ride's Sharpedo Jet can break through. Notable Ula'ula Island landmarks are the [[Lake of the Moone]]{{sup/7|SUS}} and [[Lake of the Sunne]]{{sup/7|MUM}}, both perfectly circular lakes that have special connections to the [[Legendary Pokémon]] of Alola, {{p|Solgaleo}} and {{p|Lunala}}.

Poni Island, in the southwest of the archipelago, is the most sparsely populated of Alola's islands, with only one settlement. Similar to the [[Battle Zone]] in [[Sinnoh]], it is full of rugged and harsh environments. Though its coasts are fairly flat, the island is mostly mountainous and rocky, in part due to the sprawling [[Vast Poni Canyon]] — described as a natural [[Island challenge|trial site]] — that takes up over half the island's land.

Aether Paradise, just west of the center of the archipelago, starkly contrasts with the natural islands. It is strikingly modern, with a huge building in the center that serves as both the main area and the headquarters of its owners, the [[Aether Foundation]]. Behind this building is a sprawling mansion that serves as the office and residence of its head, [[Lusamine]].

Similar to [[Hoenn]], Alola as a whole seems to have a warmer climate than other regions. It is implied to have a tropical climate, similar to its [[Pokémon world in relation to the real world#Alola|real-world counterpart]], {{wp|Hawaii|Hawaiʻi}}. For example, a thriving rainforest grows on [[Akala Island]], and most of Alolaʻs inhabitants dress in ways that mirror real-world, tropical weather attire. However, [[Mount Lanakila]], Alola's highest point, constantly experiences snow and {{weather|hail}} due to its high altitude.

Each of the natural islands also experiences a wide variety of weather conditions. For example, [[Ula'ula Island]] hosts environments with harsh {{weather|sun}}, extreme {{weather|sandstorm}}s, and frequent {{weather|rain}}, in addition to the snow and hail on Mount Lanakila.

Alolaʻs environmental conditions affect its Pokémon in various ways. To adapt to the unique environmental pressures of their Alolan habitats, a number of Pokémon species originally found in the [[Kanto]] region have developed [[Regional form|Alolan forms]]. Alolan {{p|Exeggutor}}, for instance, are five times as tall as those in other regions due to Alolaʻs abundant sunlight, and Alolan {{p|Vulpix}}, which moved to snowy mountain peaks to avoid the normal habitats of other Pokémon, adapted to their new environment by becoming {{type|Ice}}.

The Alola region has a total population of 1005{{sup/7|USUM}}, including all towns, cities, and other areas. Since its introduction in [[Generation VII]], it has been the second largest region by population.

===Notable locations===
Alola has nine cities and towns, a big avenue and a Pokémon League. Like in [[Unova]] and [[Kalos]], the routes of Alola start counting again from 1, likely to represent its geographical isolation from the original four regions. There are 17 routes in total, although there are many other locations in the form of a route that in this region are named differently, such as [[Akala Outskirts]] or [[Poni Grove]].

RotomDex mentions in the video games that Kanto and Alola are closer than it seems. But in the anime, it was shown that Alola was far enough away from [[Kanto]] (and presumably [[Johto]], [[Hoenn]], and [[Sinnoh]]) to require flying between the two locations via airplane.

The island challenge is a rite of passage in the Alola region consisting of trials on each of Alola's four main islands. Each trial has a [[Trial Captain]] who provides guidance to Trainers undertaking a trial. At the end of each trial, Trainers must face a [[Totem Pokémon]] in an [[SOS Battle]]. The final trial on each island is called the grand trial, where the Trainer must battle the [[island kahuna]]. The goal of those taking the island challenge is to become the strongest Trainer, known as the island challenge {{pkmn|Champion|champion}}.

It draws inspiration mainly from the {{wp|culture of Spain}}, as can be seen in its {{wp|Culture of Spain#Architecture|architecture}}, {{wp|Spanish cuisine|gastronomy}}, {{wp|Music of Spain|musical influences}}, Pokémon nomenclature and design, the sporadic use of the {{wp|Spanish language}} by the locals of Paldea. Some specific references to {{wp|Culture of Portugal|Portuguese}} and {{wp|Culture of Andorra|Andorran}} culture can also be found primarily on some western and northern locations of Paldea respectively.

The concept and general theme of this region seems to give great importance to {{wp|food}} and {{wp|Gastronomy|gastronomic culture}}, as can be seen in the name of many locations and the possibility of ordering a wide variety of dishes in bars and restaurants.

* c. 1,000 years prior: The Paldean Empire fell into decline due to the expense of supporting countless failed Area Zero expeditions.
* 805 years prior: [[Naranja Academy]]{{sup/9|S}}/[[Uva Academy]]{{sup/9|V}} was founded in [[Mesagoza]].
* c. 800 years prior: The Paldean Empire unified with its neighboring countries, establishing the modern Paldea region.
* 200 years prior:
** The Area Zero Expedition claimed to have become the first exploration team to reach the bottom of Area Zero. Team member Heath, a famed author and natural historian, published his account of the expedition as the Scarlet Book{{sup/9|S}}/Violet Book{{sup/9|V}}. The book's contents proved to be so fantastical that Heath and the rest of the Area Zero Expedition were accused of lying and widely discredited.
** The Area Zero Expedition planted [[Herba Mystica]], a plant they discovered in Area Zero, in five sites around Paldea in an attempt to cultivate it. They abandoned the project when local Pokémon consumed the Herba Mystica and grew into fearsome [[Titan Pokémon|Titans]].

Team Star's leader, [[Cassiopeia]], secretly came forward and accepted full blame for the incident. Recognizing the bullying problem as a failure of his administration, Director Harrington gave Cassiopeia a lenient punishment and then resigned along with all other teaching staff at the time. Cassiopeia temporarily returned to their homeland to continue their studies. The other members of Team Star, unaware of why their boss ceased communicating with them, stopped attending classes and maintained the organization while they waited for their boss's return.

He is the owner of the [[Pokémon Jujitsu Academy]] that is in between [[Goldenrod City]] and [[Ecruteak City]]. When {{an|Aya}} came to perfect and improve her training skills, Tōkichi took her under his wing and became her tutor. He and his {{p|Ariados}} helped Aya and her {{p|Venonat}} become better at {{pkmn|battle|battling}}. As well as being the owner of the academy, he partakes in many of the classes that the academy offers. In the class for improving battle techniques, he is the judge for each battle.

After [[Jessie]], [[James]] and {{MTR}} stole all the students' Pokémon, Tōkichi, as well as Aya and the gang, chased after them. He used his Ariados's web in order to make a kite. Aya stated to {{Ash}} that creating and utilizing the kite is one of her master's greatest techniques. Using {{wp|ninja}} stars, he cut the balloon and cut the rope holding the stolen [[Poké Ball]]s.

It is shaped like a five-pointed star, with one of its biggest cities being [[Lumiose City]] in the north-central part of the region. It features a vast network of rivers and waterways snaking through much of its landscape, cities and towns. North-east of Lumiose City lies a mountain range where more frigid temperatures exist, extending down into the plains below. Calem, Serena, and Shauna receive their [[starter Pokémon]] from [[Tierno]] and a [[Pokédex]] from [[Trevor]] on behalf of [[Professor Sycamore]]. After delivering a letter to their {{kal|Grace|Mom}} from Professor Sycamore, they head on an adventure traveling across Kalos challenging [[Gym]]s in order to earn eight [[Badge]]s to then challenge the {{kal|Pokémon League}}. Over the course of their {{pkmn|journey}}, they come into contact with [[Team Flare]], an organization whose goal is to create a "beautiful and better" world while making money. They try to do this by stealing [[Fossil]]s from [[Glittering Cave]], siphoning electricity from the [[Kalos Power Plant]], stealing the [[Poké Ball]]s from the [[Poké Ball Factory]] in [[Laverre City]], and attempting to agitate and capture an {{p|Abomasnow}}. Calem/Serena also encounters a mysterious giant called [[AZ]] on several occasions, initially on [[Kalos Route 13]]. After earning their seventh Badge from [[Olympia]], Calem/Serena is contacted by [[Lysandre]], a man introduced by Professor Sycamore, who reveals both himself as the leader of Team Flare, and his intention to use the "[[ultimate weapon]]" to eliminate all life in the world except for those in Team Flare. Calem/Serena battle Lysandre, first in [[Lysandre Labs]], and again in the [[Team Flare Secret HQ]], before making their way down to the basement where they find {{p|Xerneas}}{{sup/6|X}}/{{p|Yveltal}}{{sup/6|Y}} and battle them, before battling against Lysandre once more. Even though Lysandre is defeated, and Calem/Serena and their friends reason with him, he still fires the ultimate weapon. The blast the weapon emits destroys it and buries Lysandre and the HQ, ultimately disbanding Team Flare. Calem/Serena then heads to the Pokémon League where they defeat the [[Elite Four]] and [[Diantha]], becoming {{pkmn|Champion}} of Kalos. Professor Sycamore then holds a grand ceremony in Kalos to celebrate Calem/Serena's victory, and all of their friends' efforts in defeating [[Team Flare]]. During the ceremony, a large mysterious man challenges Calem/Serena to a battle and is defeated, but is grateful to them, for in the battle, he finally felt free from the sorrow and rage he felt in creating the ultimate weapon. As such, the man is revealed to be the ancient king [[AZ]], and having once again become the man who loved Pokémon with all his heart, his long lost partner {{p|Floette}} returns to him, resulting in a tearful reunion.

After the ceremony, Calem/Serena is invited to [[Kiloude City]] to partake in its [[Battle Maison]], and is given a train pass for it by Professor Sycamore. After partaking in a few battles there, they are informed by Professor Sycamore that the Anistar sundial can radiate special energy, and their [[Mega Ring]] is upgraded to be able to locate Mega Stones hidden across Kalos during twilight. Calem/Serena then returns to [[Lumiose City]], where they are contacted by [[Looker]], who has a series of cases he wants them to investigate. Calem/Serena takes part in a series of trials across Lumiose and become's Looker's second-in-command. During the investigations, Calem/Serena and Looker meet an orphan girl named [[Emma]] and her {{p|Espurr}} named Mimi, who are living in the alleys of Lumiose. Eventually, Looker offers to let Emma live in the {{DL|North Boulevard|Looker Bureau}}. However, soon after, a mysterious figure vandalizes the [[Lumiose Museum]] and also lures Trainers in to steal their Pokémon. Upon investigating these cases, and through the help of [[Malva]], they learn that the crimes are being committed by [[Essentia]], who is actually Emma in a suit that enhances her power, but she is unconscious in doing this: she is actually being controlled by [[Xerosic]]. Calem/Serena and Looker track Xerosic down to a secret floor in Lysandre Labs, and manage to defeat Essentia in a series of battles. Looker captures Xerosic, and takes him away, and parts ways with Calem/Serena and Emma, and despite the latter's hesitance, Looker reassures her that their bonds will always be strong no matter how far apart they are.

The geography of Kalos varies greatly within the region. The region is naturally bordered by a vast ocean to the west and northwest, and the eastern and southern borders are formed by mountain ranges. These borders give the region its signature star-like shape, as a large peninsula reaches out to the sea in the northwest, creating one point, and elsewhere the coastline, mountain ranges and rivers create the remaining four points. Kalos is made up of three distinct divisions, all with their own unique characteristics in both geography and Pokémon: Central Kalos, Coastal Kalos, and Mountain Kalos. The bustling [[Lumiose City]] is located near the point where all three divisions meet.

Central Kalos is located in the centric and southern parts of the region. The area is dominated by large forested plains with multiple rivers crossing it, with very few changes in elevation. Several towns are surrounded by walls of some sort, and there are also many old castles and {{wp|château}}s. Many important human settlements and landmarks are located here, such as [[Vaniville Town]], [[Santalune City]], a portion of Lumiose City, and the [[Parfum Palace]].

Coastal Kalos is located by the vast sea in the western parts of Kalos. The mainly explored area is a strip between mountains and the sea. This area is dominated by rocky shores in the southwest and lush beaches and forests in the northwest. Most human settlements are located by the sea. The peninsula in the northwest is known for its {{wp|menhir}} stones. There are many important locations, such as the [[Reflection Cave]], [[Geosenge Town]], and [[Shalour City]] with its [[Tower of Mastery]].

Mountain Kalos is located in the eastern reaches of the region. The area is largely mountainous and the temperatures tend to be cooler than in the other parts, with some routes and settlements having snow covering them. To the north there is a marshy area that is said to be haunted. However, the settlements are plentiful, and there are some important landmarks, such as the [[Kalos Power Plant]] that is built on a harsh wasteland, the [[Poké Ball Factory]] in [[Laverre City]], and the {{kal|Pokémon League}}.

Team Flare appears in {{pkmn|X and Y}}.
They are first encountered in [[Glittering Cave]], where they attempt to steal [[fossil]]s off the researcher working there, but are stopped by the {{player}} and {{ga|Serena}}/{{ga|Calem}}. This occurs without the researcher noticing. They next appear in a scene in {{rt|10|Kalos}}, examining the mysterious rock formation. The Grunt defeated in Glittering Cave challenges the player to a rematch.

In [[Geosenge Town]], they are seen examining the rock formations there, when a grunt is encountered by the player and tries to flee. Once he is followed, there appears to be an entrance to a cavern which has been blocked off. This is later revealed to be [[Team Flare Secret HQ]].

On {{rt|13|Kalos}}, it is revealed that a problem inside the [[Kalos Power Plant]] is responsible for the blackout in [[Lumiose City]], which is preventing the player from accessing the majority of the city, including the [[Lumiose Gym]]. A Team Flare Grunt outside the Power Plant drops a [[Power Plant Pass]], which the player uses to enter the building. Inside the building, a {{tc|Team Flare Admin}} and Team Flare Scientist [[Aliana]] are siphoning electricity from the Power Plant, causing the blackout. Once they are defeated, the player can progress to Lumiose City.

At [[Laverre City]], Team Flare Grunts are blocking the player from entering {{rt|15|Kalos}} and the [[Poké Ball Factory]] until the player has defeated the [[Laverre Gym]] and received the {{Badge|Fairy}}. At that point {{ga|Shauna}} tricks the Grunt guarding the Poké Ball Factory away so the player and {{ga|Serena}}/{{ga|Calem}} can enter. Although the player defeats them, the Team Flare Scientists are able to steal many of the Poké Balls, with the exception of the [[Master Ball]].

In [[Frost Cavern]], a Trainer's {{p|Mamoswine}}, which the player needs to traverse the snow-blocked {{rt|17|Kalos}}, is upset. Upon reaching the depths of the Cavern, Team Flare, led by [[Mable]], are antagonizing an {{p|Abomasnow}}. Once she has been defeated, the Abomasnow gives the player an [[Abomasite]], and the player is now able to traverse Route 17 on the Mamoswine.

Team Flare does not appear again until the player has received their seventh badge from the [[Anistar Gym]], where [[Lysandre]] reveals that he is the leader of Team Flare, and sends out a live broadcast to all trainers around Kalos via the Holo Caster. During the broadcast, Lysandre reveals Team Flare's plans of using the "[[ultimate weapon]]", a machine built by the [[AZ|king of Kalos]] 3,000 years ago that can eliminate all life. To achieve this, Lysandre plans to use {{p|Xerneas}}{{sup/6|X}}/{{p|Yveltal}}{{sup/6|Y}} to activate the machine in [[Lysandre Labs]] in [[Lumiose City]].

Lysandre Labs' secret entrance is located inside {{DL|Lumiose City|Lysandre Café}}, where Lysandre greets the player with a battle, before moving to the basement. Once the player reaches the basement, he is revealed to have imprisoned AZ, who tells the player the history of the ultimate weapon. The player then encounters [[Xerosic]] in conversation with Lysandre, whereupon Lysandre promises to deactivate the weapon if the player defeats Xerosic. However, despite this promise, Xerosic still activates the weapon by remote control, even if the player manages to switch off the weapon. The weapon, situated in [[Geosenge Town]], activates from the three {{wp|menhir}}s in the center of the town.

The player then enters the [[Team Flare Secret HQ]], to the Northwest of the town, which was previously blocked. After battling Lysandre, the player, with the help of Calem/Serena and Shauna, make their way down to the legendary Pokémon. The player encounters the legendary Pokémon, and after catching {{p|Xerneas}}{{sup/6|X}}/{{p|Yveltal}}{{sup/6|Y}}, Lysandre challenges the player to one last battle. After being defeated for the third and final time, Lysandre expresses his disgust towards the fact that his beautiful world will never be a reality. The player and their friends attempt to reason with him, saying that if people cooperate together, a better world is possible, and they use the [[Mega Evolution]] achieved by him as proof of the bond he has with his Pokémon. He, however, rejects the idea as mere naivety and then attempts to force immortality on the player and their friends{{sup/6|X}}/destroy everyone in the building{{sup/6|Y}} and fires the ultimate weapon using what little power still remains. The blast from the weapon destroys it and buries Lysandre and the HQ under rubble. As a result, Team Flare disbands. It is unknown what becomes of Lysandre afterwards.

Despite the collapse of Team Flare, however, the player encounters them once more. After defeating the [[Diantha|Champion]], during the main post-game side story, [[Looker]] arrives in Lumiose City with the intent of apprehending a criminal he is tracking, enlisting the player and a young homeless girl named [[Emma]] to aid him. A crime wave breaks out in the city, and the culprit is ultimately revealed to be one of Team Flare's scientists, [[Xerosic]], conducting an experiment using what little funds he still has following the disbanding of Team Flare. After the player defeats "Essentia," the creation of his project, Xerosic relents and surrenders to Looker, ending Team Flare's reign of terror once and for all.

[[Elite Four]] member [[Malva]] was also a member of Team Flare; however, she was not revealed to be with them until after Lysandre is defeated. Instead, she is the host of the newscasts occasionally sent through the [[Holo Caster]]. Her rank in Team Flare is unknown, although she knows classified information.

In ''[[XYS03|Mega Evolution Special III]]'', thanks to the efforts of [[Alain]], {{Steven}}, and their Pokémon, Lysandre was able to secure a gigantic [[Key Stone]], the [[Giant Rock]], for his research.

[[Malva]] debuted in person in ''[[XYS04|Mega Evolution Special IV]]'', battling Alain and Charizard with her {{me|Houndoom}}. The battle eventually ended in Alain's victory.

Team Flare, as a collective entity, debuted in ''[[XY094|From A to Z!]]'', with the {{tc|Team Flare Grunt}}s and the five Scientists all making appearances. They reappeared in ''[[XY102|Meeting at Terminus Cave!]]''.

In ''[[XY106|A Meeting of Two Journeys!]]'', Xerosic and two {{tc|Team Flare Admin}}s conducted a test of a prototype weapon that was being powered by {{p|Zygarde}} and the Mega Evolution energy.

They infiltrated Prism Tower in ''[[XY129|Kalos League Passion with a Certain Flare!]]'', and executed their scheme after the conclusion of the Lumiose Conference in ''[[XY131|Down to the Fiery Finish!]]'', using Zygarde to slowly destroy the Kalos region, starting with Lumiose City. Starting from ''[[XY132|A Towering Takeover!]]'', Ash and his friends try to stop Team Flare, with Ash himself getting captured so that Lysandre could closely observe the [[Bond Phenomenon]] between Ash and {{AP|Greninja}}. During [[XY133|the next episode]], Ash broke free, and Alain, shocked by the results of his actions, defected from the team, with the duo facing Lysandre. Meanwhile, Xerosic successfully captured [[Squishy]], while {{an|Clemont}} and [[Clembot]] were able to infiltrate the Lumiose Gym, capturing Aliana and Bryony in the process. During the events of ''[[XY135|Rocking Kalos Defenses!]]'', Lysandre was defeated by Ash, Malva, and Alain and seemingly committed suicide, while Celosia and Mable were defeated and imprisoned by Team Rocket. Lysandre Labs was then destroyed when the [[Giant Rock]] transformed into a giant copy of Zygarde. In this episode, Ash and {{AP|Lucario}} teamed up with Greninja to destroy some of the Giant Rock's remaining roots.

Unlike the games, where Team Flare hunts down Xerneas or Yveltal, {{p|Zygarde}} is their main target in the anime. Instead of stealing Poké Balls or electricity to further their plans, they utilize energy collected from Pokémon undergoing Mega Evolution.

Team Flare appear as the main antagonists of the {{chap|X & Y}}. The four Scientists first appear seeking to steal {{adv|X}}'s [[Mega Ring]] with various schemes, but were thwarted several times. Lysandre also made an appearance with [[Professor Sycamore]], acquiring a video file of Xerneas and Yveltal for his research.

After Xerneas and Yveltal's clash in [[Vaniville Town]], Team Flare took all the people and Pokémon in the city and imprisoned them in [[Team Flare Secret HQ|their HQ]], including {{adv|Y}}'s mother {{kal|Grace}}. Using [[Celosia]]'s {{p|Aegislash}}'s mind controlling powers, the villainous team forced their prisoners to transport Xerneas, which had retreated to its tree form, from {{rt|8|Kalos}} to [[Geosenge Town]] to be used as an energy source for the [[ultimate weapon]].

After locating Team Flare's hideout, X and his friends stormed the base, and as a result of their actions, [[Xerxer|Xerneas]] was awakened and later joined Y's team, and the ultimate weapon's blast was weakened so that no innocent lives were lost. As a result, Team Flare decided to go hiding in the [[Pokémon Village]] in order to plan their next move. Team Flare eventually planned to activate the ultimate weapon again by transporting Pokémon from the Pokémon Village to the stones at the [[Kalos Route 10|Menhir Trail]] in order to absorb their bioenergy. Their plan was stopped by the teamwork of [[Alexa]], [[Bonnie]], [[Clemont]], [[Viola]], and the {{tc|Sky Trainer}}s led by [[Yvette]], while five other Kalos [[Gym Leader]]s and three of the [[Elite Four]] defeated their forces of grunts stationed elsewhere around Kalos.

Though initially, he only became a Pokémon Trainer with the goal of beating his rival, [[Gary Oak]], the many Pokémon Ash has met over his {{pkmn|journey}} have shown him what being a Pokémon Master really is. Unlike most Trainers from Pallet, and indeed, unlike players of {{game2|Red|Green|Blue}} and {{game|FireRed and LeafGreen|s}}, Ash did not start his journey with {{p|Bulbasaur}}, {{p|Charmander}}, or {{p|Squirtle}}, as he arrived late to {{an|Professor Oak}}'s [[Professor Oak's Laboratory|lab]] to receive his [[starter Pokémon]]. Instead, Ash was given the only Pokémon Oak had left to give, a {{AP|Pikachu}} that did not enjoy being inside his {{i|Poké Ball}}, and from there Ash learned to treat his Pokémon as partners, earning Pikachu's trust by keeping him safe from a flock of {{p|Spearow}} he angered.

Since then, Ash has journeyed across all eight of the regions that appear in the [[core series]] [[Pokémon games]], as well as the [[Orange Archipelago]], a region he visited before beginning his journey in [[Johto]] until it was closer in time to the real-world release of {{game|Gold and Silver|s}}. In the regions outside of [[Galar]], he battles against the local [[Gym Leader]]s for their [[Badge]]s, as do Trainers in the core series games, to compete in the regional [[Pokémon League]], a [[Pokémon League Conference|championship tournament]], rather than five battles straight against the [[Elite Four]] and {{pkmn|Champion}}. While his initial strategy was to continue using the same party over the course of his {{pkmn|journey}}, letting some Pokémon go when they were required to do something or wanted to train, he has, since his journey in Hoenn, changed strategy, and now uses only those Pokémon which he has caught in the region, alongside Pikachu, to battle against Gym Leaders, with his explanation to Dawn being that he wants to prove to the young, unevolved Pokémon he meets in each new region that ''they'' can win if they try.

Over the course of the series, Ash has had several {{AP|friends}} who travel with him, typically across one region, who assist him in his journey as much as he assists in theirs. {{an|Misty}}, the Gym Leader from [[Cerulean City]] in the games, joins him in the [[original series]], as does {{an|Brock}}, [[Pewter City]]'s Gym Leader, in [[Kanto]], [[Johto]], [[Hoenn]], and [[Sinnoh]]. [[Tracey Sketchit]], an amateur [[Pokémon watcher]], joins Ash during his Orange Archipelago journey, but leaves him on Ash's return to Pallet to become an assistant to Professor Oak, his hero. {{an|May}} and {{an|Dawn}}, rookie {{pkmn|Coordinator}}s, join Ash for the duration of ''[[Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire]]'' and ''[[Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl]]'', respectively; in these he mentors them much as Brock and Misty did him, while [[Max]], May's brother, who is too young to own Pokémon, looks up to Ash for the duration of ''Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire''. {{an|Iris}} and {{an|Cilan}} travel with Ash in ''[[Pokémon the Series: Black & White]]''. Inventor {{an|Clemont}}, his sister {{an|Bonnie}}, and Ash's childhood friend {{an|Serena}} travel with Ash in ''[[Pokémon the Series: XY]]''. Like Max, Bonnie is too young to own Pokémon, but cares for her brother's {{TP|Clemont|Dedenne}}. In ''[[Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon]]'', Ash attends the [[Pokémon School]] instead of traveling around the [[Alola]] region. As such, his new friends—{{an|Lillie}}, {{an|Mallow}}, {{an|Kiawe}}, {{an|Lana}}, and {{an|Sophocles}}—are not traveling companions but classmates. In ''[[Pokémon Journeys: The Series]]'', Ash's sole new traveling companion is [[Goh]], a Trainer who aims to catch every Pokémon species in the {{pkmn|world}}, with his ultimate goal being to catch the [[Mythical Pokémon]] {{p|Mew}}.

The anime is produced in Japan by [[OLM Incorporated|OLM]] in association with [[Shogakukan|ShoPro]] and [[JR Kikaku]] and airs on [[TV Tokyo]] nearly every week, with the exception of a four-month hiatus after the [[EP038|Porygon incident]] and a seven-week hiatus during the [[COVID-19 pandemic]]. Until the Porygon incident, the show aired every Tuesday at 6:30 PM. The show returned afterwards at 7 PM on Thursdays. From April 7, 2016, to September 13, 2018, it instead began five minutes earlier at 6:55 PM on Thursdays. Since October 7, 2018 to Septembre 29, 2020, the show aired each Sunday at 6 PM. From October 9, 2020, the show airs each Friday at 6:55 PM. Many fans consider the dialogue and events mentioned in the Japanese version to be the "true canon", while the various dubs are regarded to be overridden if something stated in them differs from something said in a Japanese episode.

This concept of a television season was first embraced by the Japanese source with the inclusion of an explicitly second season to ''Best Wishes''.

The show is mainly aimed at children, and as such, mature topics such as death are not often brought up, though sometimes they appear in some episodes, and most notably in movies. Many Pokémon that are implied to be violent or sinister in the games are also made to be less aggressive. There are generally some references meant for adults, though these are kept to a minimum especially outside of Japan.

==Movies==

Since 1998 in Japan, and since 1999 in the US, a Pokémon movie has been released annually, most often focusing on a {{pkmn2|Legendary}} or [[Mythical Pokémon]]. These films are almost always a large success in Japan, and remain at least somewhat successful in {{pmin|the United States}} and other countries, having been aired on television as a special since [[M09|the ninth movie]], with the first five movies receiving wide releases and later films occasionally receiving limited releases.

The movies are not considered by all people to be canon to the show, with some preferring to think of them occurring in an alternate timeline. This theory comes from the fact that {{Ash}} and {{ashfr}} do not seem to be profoundly affected in the show by the events of the movies, which tend to have a lot of peril and drama. Others, however, see the movies as being akin to [[filler episode]]s, as none of their [[party|parties]] change, and no [[Gym Leader]]s are defeated nor [[Pokémon Contest]]s won. This is presumably the correct interpretation, as not only have most of the events of the movies been referenced at least peripherally in the show, but also, several of the events of even ''major'' episodes have been forgotten by the writers of later episodes.

* Animator [[Masaaki Iwane|Masāki Iwane]] 岩根正明 [[n:Masaaki Iwane: Pokémon anime originally slated for 18-month run|once stated]] that the anime was originally slated for a 1½-year run, which corresponds approximately to the length of the [[Kanto]] [[region]] [[S01|saga]] (had it not been delayed due to [[EP038|the Porygon incident]]). Due to its popularity during the run, however, the show was extended and continues to be one of the longest running video game-based anime series.
* During the early episodes of the [[original series]], Japanese text was seen quite frequently on signs and buildings as well as objects. This usually resulted in the English dubbed version (and thus, foreign dubs based on it) painting out the text or converting it to English.
** During the [[Johto]] saga, the animators acknowledged the practice of painting out the Japanese text in the English dub. As a result, they used made-up symbols slightly similar to the Latin script instead of Japanese text, so it would be universal to all languages and would not have to be edited for the English localization.
** During ''[[Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire]]'' and ''[[Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl]]'', the animators used a new style of symbols that appear to be blocky letters without a resemblance to any alphabet. However, most of these were still edited out for the English dub until ''[[S09|Pokémon: Battle Frontier]]''.
** From ''[[Pokémon the Series: Black & White]]'' and onward, a full writing system was specifically created for the anime. This language consists of three different fonts: a font used for titles, big signboards, etc.; another font used as less remarkable text accompanying the title font; and another font used only occasionally as a minor text filler. Each font has 26 unique symbols, and each one of those symbols represents a letter from the modern Latin script.
*** This text usually has meanings, as the symbols converted from the Latin script are written as romanized Japanese; sometimes its meanings are related to the context in which it is used, but sometimes the text contains hidden messages, like mentioning [[Jessie's Wobbuffet|Wobbuffet]] in a magazine seen in [[BW001]].
*** This writing system would start being used occasionally in the {{pkmn|games}} as part of the scenario, starting from [[Pokémon Sun and Moon]].
