Misty rarely used Starmie in {{pkmn|battle}}, generally favoring {{TP|Misty|Staryu}} to battle on land and often {{TP|Misty|Psyduck}} by mistake. Starmie was typically featured in a more instrumental capacity than its pre-evolved counterpart, being used to {{m|Surf|traverse water}} on many occasions.

In ''[[EP007|The Water Flowers of Cerulean City]]'', Starmie was used in {{an|Misty}}'s [[Cerulean Gym]] match against {{Ash}}. Misty had successfully beaten {{AP|Butterfree}} with {{TP|Misty|Staryu}}, and Starmie was called out against {{AP|Pidgeotto}}, suggesting that, at this time, Starmie was more powerful than Staryu. It dived underwater to dodge Pidgeotto's {{m|Whirlwind}} and shot up into the air to land a Tackle. However, its second Tackle was deflected by {{m|Wing Attack}}. It was blown into a Gym wall by a {{m|Gust}} attack, on the brink of losing before {{TRT}} intervened. The battle was called off and Ash was given the {{Badge|Cascade}} regardless.

In ''[[EP009|The School of Hard Knocks]]'', Misty was incensed by {{OBP|Joe|EP009}}'s insistence that he could easily defeat her {{t|Water}} Pokémon as he had done it countless times on the simulator. She promptly challenged him to a real battle and sent out Starmie to prove its strength against his {{p|Weepinbell}}. Starmie used a single {{m|Water Gun}} and knocked out Weepinbell, leading to Joe's ridicule by [[Giselle]]. However, Misty then challenged Giselle, calling her out for not being a true friend. Giselle's {{p|Graveler}} proved to be a very powerful opponent, deflecting Water Gun by spinning and then smashing into Starmie, shattering the center gem and knocking it through the window and into the pool. Starmie's regenerative abilities were also demonstrated, as by the next time it was seen, its central core was repaired.

Starmie was sent out to battle a wild {{p|Oddish}} in ''[[EP010|Bulbasaur and the Hidden Village]]''. It successfully weakened Oddish with Water Gun and Tackle, but was knocked out in one Tackle from the {{AP|Bulbasaur}} that came to its defense.

It later helped to rescue the trio from the sinking [[S.S. Anne|St. Anne]] in ''[[EP016|Pokémon Shipwreck]]'', carrying {{an|Brock}} from the ship, and later towing the group's raft out of the range of [[James]]'s raging {{TP|James|Gyarados}}. In ''[[EP019|Tentacool & Tentacruel]]'', it rescued the sailors that had been attacked.

It appeared to have an [[Ability]] similar to {{a|Water Absorb}}, even though Abilities did not exist when Misty was a main character. This was demonstrated when, in ''[[EP021|Bye Bye Butterfree]]'', Starmie chased Team Rocket away with a Tackle, but was knocked out when [[Jessie]] smashed it with a hammer. However, it seemed to regain its health when Misty jetted water on it. In ''[[EP026|Pokémon Scent-sation!]]'', it helped Staryu and {{AP|Squirtle}} put out the fire at [[Celadon Gym]] with Water Gun.

Starmie paired with Misty in ''[[EP033|The Flame Pokémon-athon!]]''. It made the final four as it was able to surf across the river course. However, like the other contestants, its efforts were sabotaged by Team Rocket, and it was blinded by a {{m|Sludge}} attack from {{TP|James|Weezing}}, taking it out long enough to allow [[Dario]], the man who had encouraged Team Rocket, to make a break for the finish line.

Misty attempted to round off her team of four in ''[[EP052|Princess vs. Princess]]'' with Starmie, but Psyduck popped out of its {{i|Poké Ball}} instead. This happened quite commonly with Starmie and Psyduck.

In ''[[EP061|The Misty Mermaid]]'', Misty stopped off at the Cerulean Gym after {{TP|Misty|Horsea}} was feeling sick due to a lack of open water exercise. Misty also left Starmie there because her [[The Sensational Sisters|sisters]] wanted to borrow it for their water ballet performances.

====Personality and characteristics====
As Starmie wasn't given many onscreen appearances, little is known about its personality. When in {{pkmn|battle}}, it was shown to be quite obedient and loyal to {{an|Misty}}. Starmie has been known to sometimes droop and bend its points when in pain or disappointment.

Having earlier expressed that Pineco's violently unstable temper and tendency to explode was both cool and a true challenge for a {{tc|Pokémon Breeder}}, Brock attempted to catch one. However, he tripped on a rock and headbutted the tree, frightening the Pineco so much that they all exploded. Brock got his chance later, when {{TRT}} was attempting to steal all of the Apricorns. The giant fan ended up blowing all of the Pineco out instead, and Brock managed to catch one in his arms before it hit the ground. However, the Pineco pried itself free and attacked Team Rocket, tackling the trio off their machine. It engaged in a battle against [[Jessie's Arbok]] alone, but could not match the powerful snake and began to flee. [[Maizie]] told Brock that he could capture the Pineco in the [[Fast Ball]], which he did just as Arbok tackled, causing Arbok to crash into its Trainer. Once Pikachu drove Team Rocket away, Brock sent out Pineco and promised that they would be good friends. Pineco enthusiastically used Self-Destruct on its new friend.

Its evolution induced a large explosion which nullified Team Rocket's suction and allowed Brock and all of the Pokémon to escape. He also revealed that Forretress was the only Pokémon he had brought with him to [[Hoenn]], having [[HS01|left]] his other Pokémon with his brother [[Forrest]].

Forretress was seen quite regularly during the early Hoenn episodes, along with {{TP|May|Torchic}} and {{AP|Pikachu}}. As a Pineco, it was very temperamental and tended to blow itself up and Brock along with it whenever it got startled, angry, or even happy. It was shown to be caring and helpful when it took care of Brock along with [[Brock's Crobat]] in ''[[EP193|Sick Daze]]''. After it evolved into Forretress, it seemed to like Brock even more, and began to act more loyally, no longer blowing itself up in Brock's face.

Misty rarely used Starmie in {{pkmn|battle}}, generally favoring {{TP|Misty|Staryu}} to battle on land and often {{TP|Misty|Psyduck}} by mistake. Starmie was typically featured in a more instrumental capacity than its pre-evolved counterpart, being used to {{m|Surf|traverse water}} on many occasions.

In ''[[EP007|The Water Flowers of Cerulean City]]'', Starmie was used in {{an|Misty}}'s [[Cerulean Gym]] match against {{Ash}}. Misty had successfully beaten {{AP|Butterfree}} with {{TP|Misty|Staryu}}, and Starmie was called out against {{AP|Pidgeotto}}, suggesting that, at this time, Starmie was more powerful than Staryu. It dived underwater to dodge Pidgeotto's {{m|Whirlwind}} and shot up into the air to land a Tackle. However, its second Tackle was deflected by {{m|Wing Attack}}. It was blown into a Gym wall by a {{m|Gust}} attack, on the brink of losing before {{TRT}} intervened. The battle was called off and Ash was given the {{Badge|Cascade}} regardless.

In ''[[EP009|The School of Hard Knocks]]'', Misty was incensed by {{OBP|Joe|EP009}}'s insistence that he could easily defeat her {{t|Water}} Pokémon as he had done it countless times on the simulator. She promptly challenged him to a real battle and sent out Starmie to prove its strength against his {{p|Weepinbell}}. Starmie used a single {{m|Water Gun}} and knocked out Weepinbell, leading to Joe's ridicule by [[Giselle]]. However, Misty then challenged Giselle, calling her out for not being a true friend. Giselle's {{p|Graveler}} proved to be a very powerful opponent, deflecting Water Gun by spinning and then smashing into Starmie, shattering the center gem and knocking it through the window and into the pool. Starmie's regenerative abilities were also demonstrated, as by the next time it was seen, its central core was repaired.

Starmie was sent out to battle a wild {{p|Oddish}} in ''[[EP010|Bulbasaur and the Hidden Village]]''. It successfully weakened Oddish with Water Gun and Tackle, but was knocked out in one Tackle from the {{AP|Bulbasaur}} that came to its defense.

It later helped to rescue the trio from the sinking [[S.S. This was demonstrated when, in ''[[EP021|Bye Bye Butterfree]]'', Starmie chased Team Rocket away with a Tackle, but was knocked out when [[Jessie]] smashed it with a hammer. However, it seemed to regain its health when Misty jetted water on it. Brock briefly left the show during the [[S02|Orange Islands saga]] to work for [[Professor Ivy]] on [[Valencia Island]] and so is only seen in a couple of cameos in the [[M02|second movie]]. While there, something happened that will probably remain secret as Brock will only huddle and say "that name" whenever he is asked about it. In the English dub of ''[[M07|Destiny Deoxys]]'', he mentioned his work for her. After this incident, Brock returned to Kanto where he was found by [[Delia Ketchum]], who helped him to regain his strength. Brock then became a rival to [[Mimey]] until he rejoined Ash and Misty as the three traveled to [[Johto]].

In ''[[EP169|Beauty and the Breeder]]'', Brock returned Vulpix to Suzie. Together, they entered Vulpix into the [[Pokémon Beauty Contest]] in [[Bonitaville]].

Brock and Misty then compared Kantonian and {{rf|Alolan}} Pokémon with the class at [[Professor Oak's Laboratory]]. Later, Brock and the rest of the group worked together to defeat {{TRT}}, who Brock was angry to find were still up to their old tactics of stealing Pokémon. Ash also called him out by name when he and Dawn were asked about how they know each other.

Brock reappeared in ''[[JNS02|The Arceus Chronicles (Part 2)]]'', where it was revealed he was working in the [[Oreburgh City]] [[Pokémon Center]] at the time, with {{TP|Brock|Croagunk}} and {{TP|Brock|Blissey}} as his assistants. Prior to joining {{Ash}} on his {{pkmn|journey}}, Brock had become increasingly frustrated and harsh towards challengers as a result of his responsibilities as both the [[Pewter City]] [[Gym Leader]] and the main caretaker for his {{Brocksib|nine younger siblings}}. Even while traveling, he would think of his family, returning home on several occasions like in ''[[HS01|A Family That Battles Together Stays Together!]]''.

Brock is noticeably mature, wise, and levelheaded, often acting as an older brother and caretaker to the other characters and a voice of reason in disputes. He will usually place others before himself and will support his friends even against his better judgment or at his own expense. Brock always carries books and maps with him, and thus is usually the character who knows where the group is headed and what they can do when they get there. However, in ''[[Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire]]'', this role was mostly taken over by [[Max]], who owned a [[PokéNav]].

He is renowned for his domestic abilities like sewing, vacuuming, and, most notably, cooking, which Ash and the others always enjoy without fail. The capacity of Brock's [[Bag]] is endless, as seen in ''[[EP009|The School of Hard Knocks]]'', where it is capable of containing full tea-sets, tables, and cooking utensils. He also carries a lot of other supplies, such as [[Potion]]s and [[Pokémon food]], though he has to make pit stops in towns so he could restock the group's supplies.

Despite this, all of his maturity and rationality leaves him completely at the sight of a beautiful woman, and he is extremely passionate over the prospect of finding the girl of his dreams, though he is usually never successful in wooing a woman. Despite this, a few women have been known to show interest in him, such as [[Wilhomena]], [[Temacu]], [[Natalie]], [[Lucy]], [[Holly]], {{OBP|Autumn|DP062}}, [[Narissa]], [[Lizabeth]], and [[Olivia]]. Despite his failures, Brock remains determined to find a girl to start a relationship with, and has indicated several times he would stop traveling with Ash and stay with the girl if this happened. This behavior tends to wear on the nerves of other characters, and Misty and Max have both commonly dragged Brock away from women by his ear. In addition, some of Brock's own Pokémon, most notably {{TP|Brock|Croagunk}}, have attacked him for getting too flirtatious with women.

Brock can also tell whether they are real or impostors, as well as make out subtle physical differences between them. This "ability" has been used multiple times in the series.

Brock was not shown to {{pkmn|battle}} often in spite of his experience as a former Gym Leader, though he happily accepts challenges from girls like [[Miki]], [[Molly Hale]], and Olivia. Instead, he tended to advise Ash on battle strategies and keenly watched matches from the sidelines, seeing the knowledge as valuable to understanding a Pokémon in its entirety.

His goals have played a passive role in his development, and Brock's overall role has generally been one as support for other main characters, usually contributing more in terms of wisdom and comedic antics than the action of the series. Unlike other characters, who aspire to achieve and excel in competitive fields like [[Pokémon training]] and [[Pokémon Contest]]s, his initial aim to become a great {{tc|Pokémon Breeder}} was a quiet one and thus did not get showcased frequently. However, once he was able to leave the [[Pewter Gym]] and go on a {{pkmn|journey}}, he has dedicated himself to learn about how to care for a variety of Pokémon. Brock is a frequently recurring character in [[The Electric Tale of Pikachu]]. Like the anime, he is a traveling companion of {{OBP|Ash Ketchum|EToP|Ash}} and {{an|Misty}}.

Brock first appears in ''[[ET02|Play Misty For Me]]'', where Ash challenges him for the {{Badge|Boulder}}. After defeating Brock and earning the Badge, Ash leaves [[Pewter City]] and continues his journey alone.

Brock reappears in ''[[ET04|Haunting My Dreams]]'', meeting Ash by coincidence in [[Saffron City]]. He becomes a steady traveling companion of Ash in ''[[ET05|The Human Race and the Pokémon Race]]'', though he separates from Ash in ''[[ET11|Days of Gloom and Glory]]'' while he prepares for the [[Indigo Plateau Conference]].

Like the anime, Brock is the Leader of the [[Pewter Gym]], but he takes a break from his duties as [[Gym Leader]] to travel. There had been some debate between members of the fanbase in regards to why Brock was removed from the main cast during the Orange Islands arc, why [[Tracey Sketchit]] was created, and why Brock returned later. In an [http://www.pokebeach.com/news/0708/second-pokemon-interview-with-masamitsu-hidaka-many-interesting-points interview] with former Pokémon anime director and storyboard artist [[Masamitsu Hidaka]], he stated his own reason why Brock was removed from the cast and why he eventually returned. He revealed that the true reason they replaced Brock is because, once they realized Pokémon was going global, there was a chance that Americans, if not anyone else outside of Japan, would view Brock as a racist stereotype because of his eyes (even though there wasn't an actual complaint yet). So they created a "tall, Anglo-Saxon looking person to be on the safe side". They later replaced Tracey with Brock again once they realized that no one really cared as to what Brock looks like, and actually enjoyed his character. Bullying and exclusion by her sisters led Misty to leave home and effectively leave her sisters as the Gym Leaders prior to ''[[EP001|Pokémon, I Choose You!]]'', choosing to prove herself as a {{type|Water}} [[Pokémon Master]].

After pointing Ash in the direction of the nearest [[Pokémon Center]], the one in [[Viridian City]], he borrowed her [[bicycle]], saying that he would return it someday.

In ''[[EP002|Pokémon Emergency!]]'', Misty appeared in the Pokémon Center after Ash dropped off his Pikachu, holding her charred bike and demanding a new one right away. Consequently, Misty traveled around the [[Kanto]] [[region]], the [[Orange Archipelago]], and the [[Johto]] region with Ash. By the end of the [[Indigo League]], however, Misty seemed to have forgotten about the bicycle, indicating that her real reason for following along with Ash was that she simply wanted to remain with her friends. In [[JN132]], Misty appeared watching Ash's [[Masters Eight Tournament]] match against {{an|Leon}} alongside Psyduck and Gyarados at the Cerulean Gym. During the battle's climax, Misty is seen to be quite apprehensive as Pikachu reaches his limit.

In [[JN136]], Misty is seen meeting [[Goh]] and interacting with his {{TP|Goh|Inteleon}} at the Cerulean Gym.

In [[JN138]], Misty reunited with Ash, stopping him from trying to catch a {{TP|Misty|Clauncher}} that she had been trying to catch. After a trying to catch Clauncher through fishing, Misty and Ash had a battle to decide who would catch Clauncher. Misty used her Politoed to battle against {{AP|Corphish}} and after a tough battle, Politoed emerged victorious, allowing Misty to add Clauncher to her team. Afterward, Misty decided to rejoin Ash on his journey. She also explained that she decided to go on a new journey, and left the gym under the care of her sisters.

Misty is a girl who can be sweet and optimistic at times, but she is best known for her vocal frustrations and seething anger. Misty also tended to get very angry whenever {{Ash}} got their party lost, especially in forests. She is very extreme in most of her moods, and she abruptly switches between her emotions. However, as time went on, Misty mellowed and her hyperactive personality was reduced significantly by the end of the [[original series]].

She is also picky, sensitive, nosy and grumpy about love. There are many episodes where she is seen getting along with the younger siblings of the family, namely [[Mikey]], [[Sakura]], and [[Max]]. This stems from the fact that she understands what it's like to be the youngest because she has three older sisters.

She is shown to have a somewhat vain side to her, often referring to herself as an "internationally known beauty" ('''世界の美少女''' ''the world's most beautiful girl'') in introductions to others. However, this trait was mostly excluded from the [[dub]] until ''[[Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon]]''.

Her goals are not as clear as those of the other main characters, but her main interest is {{pkmn|training}} {{type|Water}} {{OBP|Pokémon|species}} in aim of becoming Water [[Pokémon Master]]. Misty aggressively defends the Water-type against critics as seen in ''[[EP009|The School of Hard Knocks]]'' and when she first met {{t|Fire}} enthusiast [[Macy]]. She considers all members of the Water-type to be "cute", though her positive opinion on {{p|Tentacool}} in ''[[EP019|Tentacool and Tentacruel]]'' divided Ash and {{an|Brock}}. [[Fishing]] is one of her hobbies, and she even has a {{TP|Misty|special lure}}, which she designed to look like herself. In ''[[AG187|The Unbeatable Lightness of Seeing!]]'', she sent one to Ash as a gift. Sometime before she left for Kanto at the end of ''[[SM103|Heart of Fire! Heart of Stone!]]'', Misty gave Lana another one as thanks for inviting her and Brock to visit Alola.

Misty's battle style was first showcased in ''[[EP007|The Water Flowers of Cerulean City]]'', where she challenged Ash. She had her {{TP|Misty|Staryu}} dive into the water to wash off {{AP|Butterfree}}'s [[Status condition|status]]-inducing [[move]]s. Misty has developed a more rounded battle strategy since becoming the full-time Cerulean Gym Leader, mirroring many of Ash's own methods. During ''[[Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire]]'', Misty was shown to become increasingly confident and focused on her role as the Cerulean [[Gym Leader]]. ''[[HS02|Cerulean Blues]]'' saw her overcome her fear and help calm a raging {{TP|Misty|Gyarados}} which now serves as her one of her main Pokémon, while Misty learned about the Gym Badge-making process and began to appreciate her role in ''[[HS05|The Blue Badge of Courage]]''. She continues to improve her Pokémon as seen with {{TP|Misty|Psyduck}}'s mastery of {{m|Water Gun}} and her {{TP|Misty|Corsola}}'s strong defenses make for a tireless battle.

The one Pokémon [[type]] that Misty cannot stand are {{type|Bug}}s, as shown in ''[[EP003|Ash Catches a Pokémon!]]'' and more recently in ''[[SM102|Alola, Alola!]]''. The only Bug-type Pokémon Misty is not afraid of are the kinds that she deems "cute" or "pretty", like {{p|Ledyba}} and {{p|Butterfree}}, some belonging to her friends, like [[Tracey's Venonat]], or ones that don't look like bugs, such as {{p|Pineco}}. However, Bug Pokémon are only one of three things Misty strongly dislikes, the other two being {{wp|carrot}}s and {{wp|Bell pepper|peppers}}.

Her catchphrase when sending out a Pokémon is ('''いくわよ！マーイステディ！''' ''Go! My Steady!''). Like her "beauty" title, this was not carried over into the dub until ''Sun & Moon''.

===Pokémon===
Either through the tradition of her family's Gym or merely her love of them, Misty prefers to train {{type|Water}} Pokémon. She usually bases her choice of Pokémon to train by looks, preferring Pokémon that she thinks of as "cute" over ones that she thinks are "ugly," but is willing to overcome such differences.

Her love of Water Pokémon stems from the fact that they are extremely flexible in battle, meaning that they can easily adapt to the opponent, as she stated in ''[[EP240|Some Like It Hot]]''. Since becoming a Gym Leader, she has overcome her fear of {{p|Gyarados}} and continues to learn more about caring and battling with Water Pokémon as challengers come to the [[Cerulean Gym]].

As an experienced Water-type Pokémon Trainer, Misty has access to many powerful Pokémon and mechanics such as [[Mega Evolution]]. This allows her to be able to battle other powerful Trainers like [[Dorian]], [[Trinity]], or Ash in equal conditions.

Misty tries to recall Golduck but her Psyduck pops out. Golduck then runs off and shows off his skills to a bunch of girls.

She travels with Ash for the following chapter, ''[[ET02|Play Misty For Me]]'', expecting Ash to repay her for her bike. Later, when Ash arrives in [[Cerulean City]], he battles her instead of [[The Sensational Sisters]]. Misty awards Ash the {{Badge|Cascade}} when his {{AP|Fearow}} takes back his {{AP|hat}} from Misty's head.

Misty disappears from the manga until Ash and {{an|Brock}} bump into her at the [[Nomads Independence Day]] festival in ''[[ET05|The Human Race and the Pokémon Race]]''. In {{g|GO}}, Clone Pokémon were made available, in celebration of [[Pokémon Day]] and the release of ''[[M22|Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution]]'' on [[Netflix]], from February 25 to March 2, 2020. While the starters were found in {{OBP|Raid Battle|GO}}s, Pikachu appeared as a [[GO Snapshot|photobomb encounter]]. When caught, Venusaur would know the move {{m|Frenzy Plant}}, Charizard will know {{m|Blast Burn}}, and Blastoise will know {{m|Hydro Cannon}}. Clone Pokémon also cannot [[Mega Evolve]].
