'''Knock Off''' (Japanese: '''はたきおとす''' ''Knock Off'') is a damage-dealing {{type|Dark}} [[move]] introduced in [[Generation III]]. It is [[TM181]] in [[Generation IX]].

==Effect==
Knock Off inflicts damage and knocks off the target's [[held item]] if it has one.

If an [[Exp. Share]] or [[Lucky Egg]] was knocked off, the Pokémon will still gain [[experience]] accordingly. If an [[Amulet Coin]] was knocked off, the Pokémon will still gain [[prize money]] accordingly. Knock Off can knock off [[Mail]] (unlike other item-manipulating effects, which often cannot affect Mail).

===Generations III and IV===
If the Pokémon's item is knocked off, that Pokémon's held item becomes unusable for the rest of the battle (even if switched out), but still remains visible on the status screen. If a Pokémon has a knocked off item, it cannot gain or lose an item: {{m|Trick}} and {{m|Switcheroo}} always fail if either Pokémon has a knocked off item, {{m|Thief}} and {{m|Covet}} cannot steal an item from a knocked off Pokémon, and {{m|Recycle}} always fails when used by the Pokémon.

If Knock Off triggers an item (such as a [[Focus Band]], [[Focus Sash]], or [[Colbur Berry]]) after the attack, that item activates before Knock Off can knock it off (in the case of the Focus Band, which is not consumed, it will be removed after its effect has activated).

Even if the user faints when using Knock Off (such as due to the target's {{a|Rough Skin}} or user's [[Life Orb]]), it still knocks off the target's held item.

Knock Off cannot knock off an item from Pokémon with the {{a|Sticky Hold}} Ability or if it hits a Pokémon's {{OBP|substitute|doll}}. Knock Off cannot knock off any item from a Pokémon with {{a|Multitype}} or a [[Griseous Orb]] from any Pokémon.

Knock Off can be used as the second move of a [[Contest combination|Pokémon Contest combination]], with the user gaining 1 bonus appeal point if {{m|Fake Out}} was used in the previous turn.

===Generation V===
Knock Off now removes the held item rather than rendering it unusable; this means that the Pokémon can obtain another item if its held item is removed by Knock Off. However, {{m|Recycle}} still cannot recover an item removed by Knock Off.

Wild Pokémon cannot remove held items of the player's Pokémon.

If the user faints due to the target's Ability ({{a|Rough Skin}} or {{a|Iron Barbs}}) or held [[Rocky Helmet]], it cannot remove the target's held item. However, Knock Off will still remove the target's held item if the user faints due to its own held [[Life Orb]]. If Knock Off causes a Pokémon with the {{a|Sticky Hold}} Ability to faint, it can now remove that Pokémon's held item.

Knock Off can now remove a held Griseous Orb from any Pokémon other than {{p|Giratina}}. Knock Off cannot remove a [[Plate]] if the target is {{p|Arceus}} (Multitype has no effect on Knock Off), and cannot remove a [[Drive]] if the target is {{p|Genesect}}. If those Pokémon use Knock Off on a target holding this item (whenever or not the target benefits from holding the item), the item will not be removed.

===Generation VI onwards===
Knock Off's [[power]] has been increased from 20 to 65.

Knock Off cannot remove a [[Z-Crystal]] from any Pokémon, a [[Mega Stone]] or [[colored orbs|Orb]] if the target could use it to [[Mega Evolution|Mega Evolve]] or undergo [[Primal Reversion]], a [[memory]] if the target is {{p|Silvally}}, a [[Rusted Sword]] from {{p|Zacian}}, a [[Rusted Shield]] from {{p|Zamazenta}}, any of the [[Hearthflame Mask|Hearthflame]], [[Wellspring Mask|Wellspring]] or [[Cornerstone Mask|Cornerstone]] Masks from [[Ogerpon (Pokémon)|Ogerpon]], or a [[Booster Energy]] from any [[Paradox Pokémon]] (excluding {{p|Koraidon}} and {{p|Miraidon}}), even if it hasn't consumed the item because its Ability triggered from the appropriate weather or terrain condition instead.

If Knock Off is used on a Pokémon that is holding an item that can be knocked off, its base power will be boosted by 50%. Knock Off cannot remove the held item of a target that has {{a|Sticky Hold}} or if it hits the target's {{OBP|substitute|doll}}, but the bonus damage will apply anyway. If used on a Pokémon weak to Dark-type moves holding a [[Colbur Berry]], the Colbur Berry will still be eaten, but Knock Off will get the damage boost regardless. If used on a Pokémon that cannot lose its held item — such as a Pokémon holding its corresponding [[Mega Stone]] — this move will not receive the boost. Additionally, the boost will also not be applied if the user of Knock Off targets a Pokémon holding an item that would not be able to be removed from it.

In {{g|Sword and Shield}}, when used in a [[Max Raid Battle]], Knock Off fails completely, without even dealing damage.

In {{g|Scarlet and Violet}}, when used in a [[Tera Raid Battle]], Knock Off deals damage, but does not knock off the target's item.
== Power or damage? ==

There's been some confusion on whether the additional boost is a power boost or a damage boost. I unexpectedly found another interaction when trying to figure it out, and so I'm currently unable to confirm either way. The setup is easy: have a low-level Pokémon knock off an item of a high-level Pokémon that is weak to Dark (and decrease Atk and/or increase Def stat stages as necessary); if it receives 3HP damage, then it's a (pure) damage increase, if it's 2HP, then it's "power". When someone tests the Colbur Berry as suggested by the MoveResearch template (or even if they don't have any or don't want to test it), maybe they can test this? [[User:Nescientist|Nescientist]] ([[User talk:Nescientist|talk]]) 18:52, 24 October 2017 (UTC)

== The Colbur Berry debate ==

When Knock Off is used on a target weak to Dark, if the target is holding a Colbur Berry, the move gets a power boost immediatly before it lands. Here are damage calculations (assuming perfect IVs for every Pokemon), using a neutral nature, maximum Attack Mega Absol with Knock Off vs. a physically defensive (max HP/max Defense) Aegislash in Shield Forme, taken from Pokemon Showdown's damage calculator:

Calculations:
*'''No item''': 252 Atk Absol-Mega Knock Off vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Aegislash-Shield: 128-152 (39.5 - 46.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
*'''Any item''': 252 Atk Absol-Mega Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Aegislash-Shield: 192-228 (59.2 - 70.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
*'''Colbur Berry''': 252 Atk Absol-Mega Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Colbur Berry Aegislash-Shield: 96-114 (29.6 - 35.1%) -- 14.6% chance to 3HKO

As you can see, Colbur Berry's effect activates immediatly before Knock Off even hits, halving the damage Aegislash takes from Mega Absol's Knock Off, but since the item is still considered in play, Knock Off deals 1.5x damage. This makes the move damage Aegislash for roughly 0.75x damage. After the message "The Colbur Berry reduced the damage from Absol's Knock Off!" or so appears, the Berry is no longer in play. Interestingly enough, the Berry disappears before Knock Off can remove it. --[[User:BeepSW|<font color="#40E0D0">That Beep guy</font>]] <font color="#40E0D0">from the SmashWiki</font> ''[[User talk:BeepSW|<font color="black">(talk to me!)</font>]]'' 18:02, 7 May 2018 (UTC)

:I'm pretty sure that the wiki is looking for proof directly from the game to make changes, not the Showdown Calculator, since they aren't completely sure if they're in the right case.

:Nevertheless, your statement is right. I did some testing myself with a friend using Knock Off against three Orangurus, one itemless, one with an item, and one with a Colbur Berry, and my results were:

*The itemless Oranguru received 96 HP of damage with Knock Off
*The Oranguru with an item received 158 HP of damage with Knock Off
*The Colbur Oranguru received 72 HP of damage with Knock Off

:158 / 2 = 79, this result is close to 72 due to the random damage but is still in the range, so it is safe to say that Knock Off does get a power boost even when the item is a Colbur berry. --[[User:McFlyMan|McFlyMan]] ([[User talk:McFlyMan|talk]]) 06:23, 5 July 2018 (UTC)

== Ogerpon's masks interaction ==
I thought that Ogerpon's masks acted similar to other form-changing items, in that the mask will not be knocked off? Or is it for experimenting with damage power?
== Power or damage? ==

:Yes, using [[Canyon Biome]] as an example, the picture is from the Rotom Phone's map and cropped just to have the area, there's usually a pink or similar bright color line to outline the area. :::It should be similar enough to calling a taxi and screenshotting the location, go to the area on the map (like you are going to it via taxi), zoom in (since the central plaza is pretty small compared to the biomes) and hit the screenshot button. Once you send it over to your device, crop it so just the central plaza and the area around it is visible, convert it and finally, go over the outline using a line tool. If you think your attempt at the line tool is bad, you don't ''have'' to do it but it's common practice and someone can always go to the image and put the outline in.

== Ogerpon's masks interaction ==

I thought that Ogerpon's masks acted similar to other form-changing items, in that the mask will not be knocked off? Or is it for experimenting with damage power?

I'll be able to test it later but I'd like to get some clarification on what I need to test. [[User:KTrain5369|KTrain5369]] ([[User talk:KTrain5369|talk]]) 00:00, 31 October 2024 (UTC)

I find it odd how the only way you can view the list of credits for the games is by searching directly for them. I think we should implement a link to them in the actual game pages, but I'm not sure whether to edit the Infobox template, or go Mario Wiki and add a section to each game page that links to the credits. How about we divide the leftover/unused data found in the code of games and general development info? The articles for the games themselves would contain information on the latter, such as info from comments and interviews with the developers, how long it took to develop the games, etc. Meanwhile the former part would remain as is in either "Development leftovers of <game>" or "Data mining of <game>" (since data mining is actually used by fans and this doesn't have an official title anyway). == Titles of core series game articles ==

<ab>I think that for the sake of consistency and simplicity, the titles of core series game articles should all drop the "Version" moniker. First, not having it doesn't make it less official since both official and third-party reliable sources often don't use it. Second, it would help editors since they wouldn't have to add alternative text without the moniker all the time just so that the links are direct to the game articles, not to mention that it would also deprecate a few templates we use for that purpose alone.
For example, the article about the Generation V sequels is titled "Pokémon Black and White Versions 2" instead of simply "Pokémon Black 2 and White 2". An editor that uses templates to directly link to the article as well as alternative text to not include the "Version" moniker has to type in <nowiki>{{game|Black and White|s 2|Pokémon Black 2 and White 2}}</nowiki> as opposed to <nowiki>{{g|Black 2 and White 2}}</nowiki>, <nowiki>{{pkmn|Black 2 and White 2}}</nowiki>, or the standard Wikilink-style <nowiki>[[Pokémon Black 2 and White 2]]</nowiki>. :The official titles of the core series games prior to Pokémon X and Y (Yellow is a special case I'm not going to discuss here) all include "Version" in their official titles. While there are informal situations where it is dropped (even in official circumstances), the correct titles always include "Version". It may be more convenient for that not to be the case, but it unfortunately is. It's something that's always bothered me because it's inconsistent with our italicisation of episode and movie titles. '''<span style="color:#F85888;">—<small>★</small></span>[[User:Reshii|<span style="color:#EE99AC;">レシイラム</span>]]''''''[[User talk:Reshii|<span style="color:#F16A81;">talk</span>]]''' 22:53, 24 September 2015 (UTC)
::I'd really like a long-time admin's explanation for this. Realistically, they are titles and ''should'' be italicised. Almost (if not all, I didn't actually check) of NIWA's other wikis italicise their game titles. '''<span style="color:#F85888;">—<small>★</small></span>[[User:Reshii|<span style="color:#EE99AC;">レシイラム</span>]]''''''[[User talk:Reshii|<span style="color:#F16A81;">talk</span>]]''' 06:44, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
::::I am also in full support of italicizing game titles (I was just about to go ask about this quirk on the Manual of Style XD); it's been bothering me for so long that Bulbapedia doesn't have videogame titles italicized in comparison to a lot of other wikis' mentions of their own applicable videogames, when most other media (mostly anime) has been italicized on Bulbapedia when necessary. It would be nice to have input from a higher staff member as well. [[User:Fenyx4|Fenyx4]] ([[User talk:Fenyx4|talk]]) 21:19, 21 January 2016 (UTC)
::I also brought up on the Sync pair talk page that as a tandem, it shouldn't matter whether the Pokémon have pages or not, the trainers still do. There's an article I made on the [[User:SaturnMario/Pokémon Colosseum series|Pokémon Colosseum series]]. I humbly ask if there's a possibility to move this template into the main content spaces. The Pokémon Colosseum series can trade Pokémon with Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, and LeafGreen. They take place in the Orre region and are also the only RPG Pokémon games released after Crystal not to give the player the choice of playing as either a boy or a girl, the only side series Pokémon games with similar mechanics to the core series games, and the only RPG Pokémon games that players can catch other Trainers' Pokémon in. Also, in the Pokémon Colosseum series, players can upload Pokémon from their Game Boy Advance games to battle in 3D in VS Mode, featuring various classes for Trainers to beat. Can we move it into the main content spaces? --[[User:SaturnMario|<font color="#034112">SaturnMario</font>]], [[User talk:SaturnMario|<font color="#078325">his talk</font>]] and [[Special:Contributions/SaturnMario|<font color="#83C192">his contributions</font>]] 00:39, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
The Pokémon Company officially calls every generation the "<ordinal number> generation". I was wondering if there's a possibility to move these pages to these titles:

*[[Generation I]] → [[First generation]]
*[[Generation II]] → [[Second generation]]
*[[Generation III]] → [[Third generation]]
*[[Generation IV]] → [[Fourth generation]]
*[[Generation V]] → [[Fifth generation]]
*[[Generation VI]] → [[Sixth generation]]
*[[Generation VII]] → [[Seventh generation]]
*[[Generation VIII]] → [[Eighth generation]]
*[[Generation IX]] → [[Ninth generation]]
(Both sources are also tricky to actually rely on — one is Masuda's personal blog rather than something produced by TPC/Game Freak, while the other is a card not intended for public distribution.) While both are ordinals, they are also both in different formats, so I'm not sure there's a clear reason to choose either in particular.
